Excited to share the short story I wrote for "Star-Crossed: An Anidala Zine" @anidalazine ! A "Padme Lives" AU
Words: 2,585 * Read on AO3
******************************
PadmĂ© Naberrie Amidala, former Queen of Naboo, former Galactic Senator, and current member of the Rebellion, had been in her share of tight spots before.Â
But this was the first time the tight spot was an Imperial holding cell.
Sheâd already examined every inch of the enclosed dimly-lit space, searching for a weakness she could exploit, but found none. There was no access panel, no loose wiring, and no ventilation system large enough for her to squeeze through. So PadmĂ© sat on the bench and watched the door, working on what she would say when an officer inevitably came to interrogate Sola Minnau.
After all, Padmé Amidala was dead.
For a while, Padmé thought she was dead. The galaxy around her swirled in hot reds and blues, then cold blacks and whites. Grief so raw it threatened to tear her apart, pain unlike any she had experienced, then stillness. Such perfect, silent stillness. She was weightless, drifting through some gentle embrace where there was no pain. No suffering.
It was the babiesâ cries that called her back.
Once she was well enough to sit upright, she held her children close to her. Leia had PadmĂ©âs eyes; Luke had Anakinâs. She was given privacy to cry. And once she had no more tears to shed, she set to work.
PadmĂ© contacted SabĂ©, and her dearest friend organized the rest. Gathering PadmĂ©âs former handmaidens, they worked swiftly to organize a body double and a funeral, and before long, the people of Naboo mourned the death of PadmĂ© Amidala.
Heart aching but determined, PadmĂ© had agreed to have her children separated â from her, and from each other. Having lost Anakin, Palpatine would turn his interest to the children if he knew they lived. Obi-Wan disappeared into the Outer Rim with Luke, and Bail falsified Leiaâs birth records and took her into his home.
Over the years, PadmĂ© â Sola Minnau, now â worked closely with Bail, Mon Mothma, and other trusted allies, establishing contacts, supply lines, and information networks. They smuggled food and medicine to communities being bled dry by the Empire, and helped those in danger disappear, all while trying to bolster support to resist the ever-growing dominance of the Empire over all worlds.
They all knew the risks. If they were caught, they could be subject to execution, or worse. But PadmĂ© couldnât stop. She would help, no matter the cost. She had spent her childhood on relief missions with her father, and she hadnât been able to stand by while her people suffered when she was queen. She wouldnât hide now.
Thatâs the thought that kept her focused when the contact on Rodia ended up being an Imperial informant. They had barely greeted each other before PadmĂ© was surrounded by stormtroopers. PadmĂ© had kept quiet, giving only her pseudonym when they initially questioned her. The troopers marched her onto a shuttle, and once theyâd boarded the Star Destroyer in orbit, sheâd been taken to a holding cell.
She took a deep breath and leaned back against the cold wall. In the twelve years since the fall of the Republic, PadmĂ© had never been taken aboard a capital ship. With no communication or resources, help wasnât coming. PadmĂ© was on her own.
The door of the holding cell hissed open. She stood as a towering black-clad figure stepped in. Coarse, mechanical breathing filled the room; Padmé forced down a shudder. They had never crossed paths, but she recognized him from endless holos and horror stories, from the expressionless helmeted mask, from the lightsaber hanging from his belt.
Darth Vader.
*
Darth Vaderâs breath would have hitched if his respirator hadnât dragged the air from his lungs and reinflated them automatically. His heart would have stopped if the cardiac regulator hadnât measured out steady heartbeats. The servos in his legs whirred as the galaxy was swept from under his feet and he nearly fell to his knees, so overcome with the emotions that suddenly raged inside him.
Padmé was alive. Alive, breathing, not five feet away.
No, that couldnât be. She was dead. Vader had observed her funeral on Naboo, had mourned at her tomb. This was some trick, some deception meant to rattle him; the Emperor himself was likely behind this, testing Vaderâs resolve. What was this trickery then? A PROXY droid? A Force Apparition? A Changeling? Perhaps a handmaiden?
But as Vader and his dead wife stared at one another, he shakily reached out with the Force, and felt â PadmĂ©. Her existence thrummed in the Force, whole and strong, with that same vibrance he remembered from so long ago.
But sheâd never looked at him like this. Anger burning in her eyes, resolve in the set of her lips, defiance in her stance. Heâd seen her look at others like this and heâd admired her dedication and determination. But to have her glaring at him now, with loathing and defiance⊠he felt unsettled.
PadmĂ© didnât waste time. âOn what grounds was I arrested?â she demanded. âItâs unlawful to take a citizen into custody without disclosing the nature of the supposed criminal activity.â
The current Admiral of The Executor had been so smug when heâd approached Vader to announce that a rebel insurgent had been captured. Vader had strode to the detention block, flanked by two stormtroopers, ready to wring out all the information he could from the rebel scum â
Of course she would be with the Rebellion. The Empire was the very thing that she had been so concerned about creating during the Clone Wars.
He forced himself to speak. âConspiracy against the Empire.â His synthesized voice rang out in the enclosed space, so warped and pitched that she would never realize who she spoke to.
But did he really want her to know? Did he want Padmé to know what became of Anakin Skywalker? To see this broken, twisted husk of what remained? Would she want to know? Vader had killed Anakin Skywalker, had carved out everything that remained of the naïve Jedi, everything that Padmé had loved, until only Vader remained.
She was speaking, and Vader said nothing. He just⊠listened to her voice, bringing to mind memories of her practicing her speeches the night before important Senate sessions, as he half-listened, so happy that the Force had their paths cross all those years ago in Wattoâs shop â
Fury burned in Vaderâs core and he let it fester, let it burn away at the memories of the man he had killed. He turned his head, addressing the two stormtroopers standing in the cramped cell just behind him. âLeave us.â
Hastily, the troopers filed out, the door sliding closed behind them.
His breathing filled the silence; Padmé had stopped talking when Vader spoke. He felt her fear, though it did not show on her face.
âDo you have nothing to say?â
She had come to him on Mustafar, knowing what heâd done. Even as she betrayed me, she loved me.
It was the last thing she said to him; Vader heard it in his nightmares, sometimes. âStop, stop now, come back. I love you. AnakinâŠâ
Grief welled in him, and he spoke before he could stop himself. âI thought I lost you.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about. Weâve never met.â
âYou were alive, I knew you were, but I felt â I felt our bond break.â His emotions roiled through him. âYou were gone, he said ââ
Hatred .
âHe said I killed you,â Vader rumbled. âHe said I killed you in a fit of anger, and when I couldnât sense you, I believed him. The Emperor lied to me. Heâs kept you from me all these years, knowing that I ââ
That he what? Would have left Emperor Palpatineâs side? That he would run away with his long-lost wife? That he would kill her?
PadmĂ©âs eyes had gone wide, frightened, incredulous as she stared at him. In a small voice, so quiet he almost didnât hear: ââŠAnakin?â
The anguish threatened to consume him.
âAnakin Skywalker is dead.â He paused. âIâŠam what remains.â
She stared at him for so long, so silently, that Vader wondered if this might be a dream after all. âWhatâŠwhat happened?â
âIt is because of Obi-Wan that I am like this,â he hissed.
âNo! He would never hurt you! He loved you ââ
âEnough! I donât need to hear empty assurances.â
Fear lingered in her eyes, but that spark had returned. âIf you canât believe he loved you, what about our love?â
âI loved you more than I can ever express. I did everything for you â I would continue to do anything for you â â
âExcept come with me.â
âYou brought Obi-Wan to kill me.â
âNo! I didnât know! I didnât know heâd snuck aboard my ship.â And Vader was startled to hear the truth of her words reverberate in the Force. Taking a hesitant step forward, PadmĂ©âs eyes flickered between the lenses of his mask, as though trying to see through them. âAll I wanted was you. For us to be safe, and happy. We didnât need anything else. EvenâŠeven after everything you didâŠâ
âIt was necessary. To bring order to the galaxy, to gain powers of the Force that would save ââ Vader stopped abruptly. âThe child. Does the child live?â
She bristled, and that was all the answer he needed. Â
He turned from her, but he didnât see the cold cell around them. He saw a child splashing in the lakes of Naboo, PadmĂ© laughing as she chased them, and Anakin Skywalker watched them from the grass, smiling and happy, whole and unburnt.
And then his vision clouded with red, and black, and Darth Vaderâs fury returned, wiping out the scene of peace that had been stolen from him. Because it had been stolen from him. If he had never pledged himself to the Emperor, never razed the Jedi Temple, never succumbed to the Dark Side, if the Emperor hadnât lied to him about PadmĂ©âs deathâŠÂ
âAnakin?â
He jolted out of his seething reverie. PadmĂ©âs expression was carefully controlled, but Vader could sense her unease, her fear, her⊠hope.
Her steady voice held more gentleness than he deserved. âWhat happens now?â
Now, the Emperor would die. Now, Vader would have revenge. NowâŠ
He turned on his heel and waved his hand, the cell door opening, harsh white light spilling into the dim space.
âBring her,â he commanded.
The stormtroopers moved immediately, pulling PadmĂ© from her cell and marching her behind him. He could feel her eyes boring into the back of his helmet, but he didnât turn around. If he took the time to explain, he might lose his nerve.
And neither Darth Vader nor Anakin Skywalker ever lost their nerve.
*
Padmé wanted to cry. She wanted to curl into the corner of some isolated place and sob her heart out. Instead, she raised her chin and walked as upright as she could as the stormtroopers escorted her behind the towering Sith.
How had the man she loved become the most feared monster in the galaxy?
She had believed, all those years ago, that there was still good in Anakin, even as he turned his back on everything he believed because he thought it would save her. But when Obi-Wan said that Anakin was dead â
Obi-Wan. Did he know that Anakin lived? Did he know what had become of his best friend? Had Obi-Wan lied to her about Anakinâs death, the way the Emperor lied to Anakin? No, she couldnât believe that. He had been nearly as distraught as her. He couldnât have known.
With all her heart, Padmé wanted to believe that there was still some sliver of good left in the creature that was Darth Vader; some glimmer of Anakin that she could recognize. But the horrific things that Vader had done⊠She watched the Imperials scatter from him in fear as Vader led her through the maze of corridors. How many had he killed? Tortured? He continued to hunt down surviving Jedi, relentlessly pursued Rebel insurgents, left ruins in his wake.
Could there really be good left in such a man?
She had to believe there was.
The corridor opened to a hanger bay. TIE fighters, small cargo ships, and shuttles lined the platform; technicians, pilots, deck crew, officers, and troopers moved in tightly organized groups, or else with purpose from one task to another. Darth Vader ignored them all, heading straight for a shuttle.
Technicians tending to the shuttle tripped over themselves as they leapt to attention.
âLord Vader! We werenât informed of a scheduled departure ââ
âAn apt statement, as I donât often operate on schedules.â The man flinched. âI have need of my shuttle. Is it suitable?â
âYes, my lord! It has been returned to your specifications.â
As the deck crew hurriedly cleared away their equipment, PadmĂ© couldnât help a twinge of familiarity; of course Anakin would be particular about his ship. So that, at least, had remained.
Darth Vader stood at the landing ramp and faced her. The troopers shoved her forward. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw his hand twitch. But he didnât strike. Instead, he stepped in front of them. âThat will be all.â
âSir?â one of them asked confusedly.
âI am not accustomed to repeating myself.â The low, warning tone sent a shiver up PadmĂ©âs spine.
âYessir,â the other said hastily, stepping back. The first trooper went to speak, thought better of it, and followed his fellow soldier.
Darth Vaderâs shadow fell over her as she walked into the ship. Despite the size of the shuttle, there wasnât much room inside; half the interior was taken up by some spherical mechanism, like a ball-shaped chamber.
âWhatâs happening?â she asked, doing her best to keep her tone calm.
Instead of answering, Vader swept past her, cape billowing behind him as he strode to the cockpit. âStrap in until we enter hyperspace.â
Her stomach flipped. Where was he taking her? Why didnât he bring any guards along? Tense, she lowered herself into a seat and adjusted the safety harness. Darth Vader â Anakin â no, she couldnât think of him as Anakin â Vader sat in the pilot's seat, expertly flipping switches and adjusting controls until the ship hummed to life.
The harsh white of the hanger bay ended as they emerged into the blackness of space. She could just spy Rodia through the viewport as Vader turned the ship and input coordinates. Coordinates to where? Within moments, the stars warped and stretched, before slingshotting them into the blue-white of hyperspace.
Gathering herself, PadmĂ© undid the harness and stood. Vader made no movement as she walked into the cockpit. Even when she stood beside him, he didnât turn to look at her. She gazed out the viewport feeling like she was hurtling towards â
âI will take you anywhere you want to go.â
A breath escaped PadmĂ©. âWhat?â
Vader said nothing.
âYouâre ââ she sat heavily in a little-used copilots chair. âYouâre helping me escape?â
âYou will be interrogated as a Rebel spy. You may be tortured, or killed. And if the Emperor discovered your identity, he may take personal interest.â
After a long moment he added softly, âI cannot lose you again.â
With a trembling hand, she reached over and touched the side of that black mask. Finally, he turned to face her. It may have been a trick of the lenses, but for just a moment, she thought she saw his eyes illuminated in the light of hyperspace. Anakinâs eyes. Lukeâs eyes.
âCome with me.â

Bang Creator Interview: Tumblr: @littlebreadrollart | AO3: InkedConstellations | Twitter: littlebreadroll | Bluesky: littlebreadroll
The Collaboration period has begun! In these quiet months before works are due, we want to foster a sense of excitement, camaraderie, and celebration among our participants. To that end, all participants were given the option of a formal interview by our mod, Dema, or an informal âask-gameâ survey. We hope you enjoy getting to know our phenomenal creators as much as we have!
Interview with Dev
Dev and Dema talk horror media, the Deep Roads, and too many eyes (or: can there every be too many eyes?)
Dema: Is this your first time participating in a Big Bang as an artist?
Dev: It is! I've participated in some zine events in the past, but only as a writer. I'm very excited to be an artist this time around.
Dema: What inspired you to join?
Dev: I've been a fan of Dragon Age for a long time, but wasn't really sure how to join in the fan community. Things have been a lot more active recently since Veilguard is coming soon (finally), so I thought 'It's now or never! Might as well go big or go home.'Â
Dema: When you do a collaboration like this, what is your process like? How do you start?
Dev: I usually start by reading the prompt and seeing what comes to mind, and then talking with my partner about their vision for the piece. As an artist in particular, I feel like my best inspiration comes from the passion other people have for their projects, so it's important to me that what I settle on is both something I want to draw and something the writer really wants to see! From there, I sketch a few thumbnails on paper before I really sit down to work digitally. I like to take my own reference photos, so my roommate puts up with a lot of unusual posing requests.
Dema: Oh I love that, having your own references is so valuable. Besides the source itself, is there anything else inspiring you a lot right now?
Dev: I'm a big fan of horror media in general, so I'm always being inspired by that. Anything that leaves the impression of being slightly wrong or off is always a great piece in my opinion--the kind of thing that lingers in your brainspace. I'm reading a lot of korean webnovels lately too, so I've been invested in their flair for the dramatic. But ultimately, I'm inspired by the idea of trying something new.
Dema: Dragon Age has a lot of horror elements, but is there a particular game in the franchise, or theme, or even a moment in DA that scratches that itch the most for you?
Dev:Â I started with Dragon Age: Origins, and it'll always have a special place in my heart. I think the moment I fell in love with it was actually Branka's Deep Roads quest--walking through the pulp-filled hallways while that poem is being recited still sends shivers down my spine! I know it's a bit controversial among fans because they're such a slog at times, but the Deep Roads are my favorite part of any DA game.
Dema: What do you think will be the greatest challenge for this piece you're working on for the bang? Without giving away too much đ
Dev: Definitely the expressions. I picked a really visceral moment in the fic, both physically and emotionally, so I hope that the finished result gets the right feelings across. They say eyes are the windows to the soul, after all!
Dema: Do you consider yourself primarily a portrait artist?
Dev: I would say more character artist than portrait, since I feel like the entire body pose works to communicate a figure's personality and emotions. But eyes are definitely my favorite part of drawing. So much so that I often find excuses to add extras đ
Dema: Hahaha does this mean you love the Dread Wolf iconography?
Dev: I do! I admit, I wasn't much of a Solas fan when I first played Inquisition. But the Dread Wolf designs have really grown on me.
Dema: When did you first play it? Did you play them as they came out?
Dev: I wish! I didn't even play DA:O until 2017, my sophmore year of college. My boyfriend at the time introduced me to it, but before then I wasn't much of a video game player at all. You could say that Dragon Age really changed my view on how fun it could be to play video games. I spent a few years being obsessed with Origins and Awakenings, but after that I played DA2 and Inquisition right in a row.
Dema: What is the most fun aspect of the games, in your opinion?
Dev: The lore, hands down. I'm the type of player that reads every scrap of paper and book I get my hands on. But more than just learning about Thedas, I like to use that information to change how my character interacts with the world. It's also really fun to read other people's theories.
Dema: Do you have a favorite OC you've created?
Dev: I think our first is always special to us. I began with my Warden, Sigilla, as a casteless dwarf. I went in blind with her, so I really felt like we were both discovering the world at the same time. But my Inquisitor is a close second!
Dema: When did you first make art for Dragon Age? Why did you start?
Dev: I started out with little napkin doodles back when I was first playing Origins. They were just to pass time so I didn't end up keeping most of them, but I started because I was absolutely obsessed with Alistair. I just drew his goofy little face everywhere!
Dema: Is he your favorite companion/romance?
Dev: Yes, he is. Every time I replay DA:O I tell myself I'm going to make different choices, but I just can't bear to break his himbo heart. Tell me that when he pulls out that rose you could look him in the eye and turn him down!
Dema: Last question: are you art-ing today? If so, is there anything you'll use to help you get into the zone?
Dev: I am! When I draw, I like to make sure my space is really clean so I don't have any distractions. Usually I just keep my sketches out, and I'll listen to a podcast or random youtube videos and let the white noise keep my thinking brain occupied so I can really go at it. Right now I'm on my 4th listen of the Magnus Archives--it may be spooky, but there's just something about a vaguely British man reciting horrors in a deadpan tone that's really relaxing.
Dema: Oh, I think those are great vibes. I hope you have a wonderful drawing session! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to be interviewed.
Dev: Of course! It was great to talk to you. I'm really excited to be a part of this project, and I hope that everyone who reads the fic I'm paired with enjoys it! It's inspired me a lot.
