Drawtober 2023: Solar Sneeze

I recall the prompt for this at the event I was working on alongside Drawtober was a solar flare or solar storm I think. I don't have personifications of the solar system yet, so I thought Solaris would be the closest thing. Different gods may appear different depending on sickness. With Solaris, since he has a big ball of fire-like hair, I imagine his hair gets smokier-looking to indicate that he's not feeling great. Also tends to sneeze fire. The sneezing fire part is pretty difficult to deal with. Especially as he'll burn tissues. Solaris, Penelope Browne- Me (@circifox)

Solar Storms happen, and if they are strong, they can strip the atmosphere from a planet. ‘How do you think Venus lost its atmosphere? 2024 and the Solar Storm Forecast: Should We Brace for Impact?

As the Sun enters its active phase in this 11-year solar cycle, the question on everyone's mind is: Will a major solar storm hit Earth in 2024? The answer, like the fiery ball of plasma at the center of our solar system, is complex and constantly evolving.

The Science Behind Solar Storms:

Our Sun throws a tantrum every now and then. Flares erupt, spewing charged particles known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) into space. These energetic outbursts can travel millions of kilometers, and when they collide with Earth's magnetic field, the consequences can range from dazzling auroras to disruptive geomagnetic storms.

2024: A Year of Increased Activity:

Experts predict the peak of this solar cycle to occur between now and October 2024. This means we can expect more frequent and potentially stronger flares and CMEs compared to recent years. While most of these solar outbursts will miss Earth entirely, the possibility of a direct hit cannot be entirely discounted.

What to Expect if a Solar Storm Hits:

The impact of a solar storm depends on its intensity and trajectory. Minor storms (G1-class) can cause minor disruptions to radio communications and satellite operations. Moderate storms (G2-class) can affect power grids and GPS navigation systems. Large storms (G3-class and above) are rare but can have widespread consequences, disrupting communications, damaging infrastructure, and even triggering blackouts.

Preparing for the Potential Solar Storm:

While predicting the exact timing and strength of a solar storm is difficult, we can take steps to mitigate its potential impact. Power grid operators are implementing strategies to protect from surges, and satellite operators are adjusting orbits to avoid the brunt of CMEs. Individuals can stay informed by following updates from space weather agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and by having backup plans for potential disruptions to communications and technology.

So, will a solar storm hit Earth in 2024? We can't say for sure. But by understanding the science and taking necessary precautions, we can be prepared for whatever our fiery neighbor throws our way. And remember, even if a major storm does make its way, it's not the end of the world. Our planet has endured these celestial tantrums for billions of years, and with a little bit of preparation, we can weather this one too.

Ready for The Solar Storm: NASA-Enabled AI System May Warn in Advance About Solar Storm 

The world is ready for tomorrow’s solar storm but where it hit it is still unknown.  

But NASA is ready to detect the location, where the solar storm hit earlier. NASA built a new computer model that uses AI to analyze the spacecraft measurements of the solar wind and predict where an impending solar storm will strike, anywhere on earth, with 30 minutes of advance warning. 

Solar Storm Devastating Impact on Technologies

The sun constantly sheds solar materials both in a steady flow known as the “solar wind” and in shorter more energetic bursts from solar eruptions. 

When these solar materials hit the earth’s magnetic environment it creates so-called geomagnetic storms.  

The geomagnetic storm causes disruption in technologies like satellites and telecommunications. 

In history, there were two geomagnetic storms that hit the earth. 

First – In 1859 the solar storm was intense at the Carrington Event, which generate fires at the TV Stations. If it happens today, it causes more severe damage to global communications and it would be dangerous for the economy as well. 

Second – The second occurred in 1989 and caused electrical blackouts across Quebec for 12 hrs, which left millions of Canadians in the dark and closed schools and businesses.

NASA Will Use AI-Enable Model to Provide Advance Warning of Solar Storm 

NASA build the computer system Dagger (Deep Learning Geomagnetic Perturbation) that can quickly predict the Geostorm 30 minutes before they occur.  

The model can produce predictions in less than a second and update about storms every minute. 

Dagger computer model uses AI to analyze the real-time measurement from space and across the earth to generate accurate and precise predictions of the solar storm. 

The dagger model was built by a team of researchers at the Frontier Development Lab – a public-private partnership that includes NASA, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Department of Energy. 

The researchers applied an A.I. method called “deep learning” which trains computers to recognize patterns based on previous examples. They used this type of AI to identify the relationship between solar wind measurements from Heliophysics missions and geomagnetic perturbations observed at ground stations across the planet. 

The dagger model computer code is open source, and it could be used by power grid operators, satellite controllers, and telecommunications companies. 

This model gives them an advance warning which helps them to prepare everything in advance before a solar storm hit the earth.

 “With this AI, it is now possible to make rapid and accurate global predictions and inform decisions in the event of a solar storm, thereby minimizing – or even preventing – devastation to modern society,” said Vishal Upendran of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in India.
