I'm working on a longer piece about perovskite solar cells, but one of the key obstacles to their commercial success is the presence of lead. Researchers at Pusan National University think they've found a passivation solution to prevent lead leakage. Technical details here.

How does solar power work? | Solar energy explained
Solarpanels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells are made of materials that produce excited electrons when exposed to light. The electrons flow through a circuit and produce direct current (DC) electricity, which can be used to power various devices or be stored in batteries.
Thebasic operation of a solar cell involves the creation of an electric field. This is achieved by doping silicon with other materials, such as phosphorous and boron, to create a positive and negative charge on either side of a silicon wafer. When light energy strikes the solar cell, photons knock electrons loose from the atoms in the semiconductor material. If electrical conductors are attached to the positive and negative sides, forming an electrical circuit, the electrons can be captured in the form of an electric current
Solarpanels are often coated with an anti-reflective coating to maximize the amount of light absorbed. They are also sometimes combined with concentrators, which use lenses or mirrors to focus light onto smaller cells, enabling the cost-effective use of highly efficient, but expensive cells. Also, the students of Best Engineering Colleges in India to utilize this energy savings program in a cost-effective, easy-to-implement manner.
Theamount of energy produced by a solar panel depends on the angle of incidence of sunlight. To maximize energy output, modules are often oriented to face south (in the Northern Hemisphere) or north (in the Southern Hemisphere) and tilted to minimize the angle of incidence. Solar tracking can also be used to keep the angle of incidence small throughout the day
Solarpanels are widely used for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes, as well as in space, often with batteries. They offer several advantages, such as using a renewable and clean energy source, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and lowering electricity bills. However, they also have some disadvantages, such as depending on the availability and intensity of sunlight, requiring cleaning, and having high initial costs
Whatare the benefits of using solar panels
Solarpanels offer several benefits, including:
1. Reducing carbon emissions andpollution: Solar panels generate electricity without burning fossil fuels, reducing nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to smog, air pollution, and global warming.
2. Limiting global warming: By reducingcarbon emissions, solar panels help limit global warming and its associated impacts, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and temperature swings.
3. Water conservation: Solar panelsrequire no water for electricity production, unlike power plants that use fossil fuels and consume large amounts of water for cooling.
4. Improving air quality: Solar panelsproduce no harmful chemicals, reducing the strain on the environment and improving air quality for humans and animals.
5. Reducing reliance on fossil fuels:Solar panels reduce reliance on finite fossil fuels, contributing to energy independence and reducing the environmental damage associated with fossil fuel extraction.
6. Promoting energy independence: Solarelectricity generation reduces reliance on traditional energy sources, reducing carbon emissions from transportation and promoting energy independence.
7. Supporting grid stability: Excess solarelectricity is channeled to the grid through net metering, reducing the grid load and ensuring more people can access power without overloading the grid.
8. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions:Solar panels can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 100 tons over their 28-year lifecycle, with solar panel carbon footprints significantly lower than traditional electricity production methods.
9. Made from recyclable materials: Solarpanels are made from recyclable materials, including glass, plastic, and aluminum, reducing waste from solar panels.
10. Low-maintenance costs: Solar panels haveno moving parts and require minimal cleaning, reducing maintenance costs and the use of cleaning chemicals that harm the environment.

Solar installation at home and panel removal and reinstallations
Solar Installation at Home
1. Assess Your Energy Needs
Calculate your household’s energy consumption to determine the size of the solar system you'll need. Check your utility bills to see your average monthly and annual energy usage.
2. Evaluate Your Home’s Solar Potential
Consider factors such as roof orientation, tilt, shading, and available space. An installer will typically perform a site assessment to determine if your home is suitable for solar panels.
3. Choose the Right Solar System
Grid-Tied Systems: These are connected to the local utility grid and are the most common. They allow you to use grid power when solar production is low and can potentially earn credits through net metering.
Off-Grid Systems: Ideal for remote locations, these systems are not connected to the utility grid and require battery storage.
Hybrid Systems: Combine elements of both grid-tied and off-grid systems, with battery storage to provide backup power.
4. Select a Reputable Installer
Research and compare solar installation companies. Look for certifications, customer reviews, and warranties. Get multiple quotes and ask for detailed proposals.
5. Permits and Approvals
Obtain necessary permits and approvals from local authorities and your utility company. Your installer usually handles this, but it's good to be aware of the requirements.
6. Installation
The installation process typically involves mounting the panels on your roof, wiring them to an inverter, and connecting the system to your home’s electrical system. It usually takes one to three days.
7. Inspection and Activation
After installation, your system will need to be inspected by local authorities and your utility company. Once approved, your system can be activated.
Panel Removal and Reinstallation
1. Reasons for Removal
You might need to remove panels for roof repairs, upgrades, or relocation. Ensure that the removal process is done carefully to avoid damage.
2. Hire Professionals
Removing and reinstalling solar panels should be handled by professionals. They have the expertise to safely disconnect, handle, and reinstall the panels.
3. Roof and System Inspection
Before reinstallation, inspect the roof for any damage and ensure that it’s structurally sound. Also, check the solar system components to ensure they are in good condition.
4. Reinstallation Process
Reinstallation involves re-mounting the panels, reconnecting the wiring, and ensuring the system is properly calibrated and functional.
5. Testing and Activation
Once reinstalled, the system should be tested to ensure everything is working correctly. This includes checking the inverter, connections, and overall performance.
6. Documentation and Updates
Update any system documentation and inform your utility company of the changes, if necessary. This helps ensure your system continues to operate efficiently and in compliance with any agreements.
Additional Tips
Maintenance: Regularly clean your panels and check for any issues. Most systems require minimal maintenance, but it's important to stay on top of it to ensure optimal performance.
Warranty: Keep track of your system’s warranty coverage. Most solar panels come with a 25-year warranty, but other components may have different durations.
Energy Monitoring: Consider installing an energy monitoring system to keep track of your solar energy production and consumption.
If you have specific questions or need more detailed advice, feel free to ask!

Weekly Update, 21 February 2023
The International Energy Agency site is a treasure trove of statistics about all aspects of energy generation and consumption, from electric vehicles to global generation investments. Their latest report on renewable energy brings good news. High fossil fuel prices combined with supply concerns related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have made renewables more attractive both economically and from an energy security perspective. China, India, the EU, and the United States are all moving more quickly than previously anticipated.
Seagrass is wonderful stuff. It sequesters more carbon per acre than terrestrial rainforests, it provides food and habitat to support marine ecosystems, and it helps reduce coastal erosion. Unfortunately, seagrass meadows also face similar threats to terrestrial rainforests, thanks to dredging and agricultural runoff. As a step toward better understanding of this “blue carbon” resource, US Environmental Protection Agency scientists are examining how carbon storage in seagrass meadows varies across New England.
With more than 25 GW of capacity actively under construction, solar generation is now the centerpiece of US renewable energy plans, accounting for 70% of planned utility-scale capacity through 2025. As recently as 2013, the Energy Information Administration didn’t even bother to report solar generation. Now, further acceleration of solar deployment is a likely effect of the Inflation Reduction Act’s $370 billion investment in renewable energy and climate measures.
