MC: *sighing in disappointment* Okay. I'll ask Solomon. He might know a spell or something. And he'll definitely agree to nap with me.

Barbatos: …

Moments later, Barbatos found himself in his bed with MC cuddled up against him, snoozing peacefully. He mentally scolded himself for giving in so easily while his arms and tail tightened around MC protectively.

Is Kill Boksoon worth the hype?

Unpopular opinion: NO. Here's why:

1. The Storyline was unsatisfying

I do like the whole idea of the main character living a double life: as a mother and as an A-rank assassin. However, the whole film felt like a multi-chaptered novel/manga/manhwa that was "compressed" into a two-hour film. To be honest, there were so many parts in the movie which could have been expounded better, like the first meeting of Chairman Cha and Boksoon, how did he find out about the then seventeen-year-old girl's case? Did Boksoon heard or contacted MK and the company then assigned someone to stage her father's suicide? How come the director of MK despises Boksoon so much? Surely there was something deeper than just her being the chairman's favorite knife, what about the backstory of how MK was established and became such a powerful company? What about Jae-young's dad? Was she ever curious about who he was? The main plot had so much potential, but there are loose threads and unexplored side stories would have made it so much better.

2. There were interesting characters whose backstories could have added up to the excitement

Han Hee-sung, Cha Min-kyu, Cha Min-hee, Kim Yeong-ji, are among those characters who I'd like to get to know of. Sadly, because this is a film, the focus was definitely towards the main character. I'm not mad, and I think Jeon Do-yeon gave off a splendid performance as Gil Boksoon. But the four I've mentioned above have so much more to offer. Especially the Cha siblings, I wish they had given these characters a solid backstory so the viewers could have a better understanding towards these characters.

3. The climax didn't provide the climax

The other fight scenes were good, but the final fight scene between Boksoon and Min-kyu which by the way was supposedly a badass and exhilarating part of the show was rather underwhelming. Those two have known each other for so long that they could already predict what the other would do, but it was so hard to keep my eyes glued on the screen as the film goes on. It wasn't bad, but it was lackluster. And in all honesty, it would have been better if they really fought to the death than staring into each other's souls or predicting what the other was going to do. It's kind of common in many action films but hey, it works most of the time.

4. The ending was so-so

There are two things I have in mind: one was Min-kyu never intended to harm Jae-young, the film gave hints about his relationship with Boksoon which led to the suspicion that he could be the real dad of Jae-young (but it was never confirmed), and his #1 rule was that kids were off-limits so he was just really messing with Boksoon's head. OR Jae-young did watch the live but pretended that she didn't for some reason idk, and I kinda have the feeling that she could be following her mother's footsteps in the future but that was just me. Anyway, after Boksoon killed Min-kyu there wasn't really left to tell though I would have liked to know whether the remaining employees would...perhaps kill for the position as the new CEO or something but yeah, it was just an okay ending.

Some good things about the show:

1. Amazing cast ensemble

Hands down, they were all amazing ❤️ Like I've said, Jeon Do-yeon delivered her character so well! I love how she shifts from a badass assassin to a mom who's just trying to reconnect with her only daughter. Also, a huge shout out to Lee Jae-wok for his cameo performance.

2. The relationship of Gil Boksoon and Gil Jae-young throughout the film

I know South Korea is a conservative country and they're not as open towards the LGBT community, so I like that the character of Jae-young wasn't the usual kdrama or kmovie rebellious, bratty, girl. She was hiding something and was scared of what other people might say about her especially her mom and it sucked because she couldn't really be herself. But the moment she finally came out to her mother, their relationship has gotten better. Boksoon's initial reaction was understandable but in the end, she never forced Jae-young to be someone that she's not and even encouraged her to be true to herself.

Conclusion:

Kill Boksoon isn't the best film I've seen this year, but I wouldn't say that it's one of the worst. In fact, I think that this has so much potential and so much more to offer, and it could have been executed better. It was just lacking, I personally think that this could have been one of the best if this movie was turned into a series instead.

so i was just thinking. solomon's like super in love with mc right? so that would mean he'd have a soft spot for them and would be nicer to some extent towards the mc. but like, how much contrast? i've seen instances where he's straight up sarcastic, snarky or "lmao idc" to some extent with other characters, and do you think if the same instance took place w mc as the subject he'd act the same way? most probably not right? as an ardent solomon lover, i just find the thought funny that it would be a running joke (it more or less is a thing with all characters and mc anyway but im just imagining it w solomon) amongst everyone about how nice solomon is with mc but is whatever w everyone. to what extent do u think is the contrast in character? how nice do u think he is in general, because i see many posts about how lovely he is to mc but is it the same with everyone? and how much sweeter do u think he is to us?? i just love thinking abt this because like...im so specialz yay pls love me solomon :')

Oh yeah. Solomon is notoriously down bad for MC. (At least, this is my opinion and I know others feel the same way.)

And I think this translates most in that he does things or acts a certain way with MC that he doesn't do with the others.

He has a general respect for most of the other characters and I think he keeps things civil. Some of them he likes more than others. But in a general sense, Solomon is a smart and powerful guy who is likely always aware of the fact that he's a human among demons and angels. I think he tends to hold everybody else at arm's length out of a sense of self preservation. He eventually opens up more as the story progresses and he becomes more friendly with everyone.

But he doesn't let anyone get as close to him as MC.

I don't know if I'd say he's nicer to MC, necessarily. I would say that he has more trust for MC. He tells MC things he would never tell anyone else. He's also very protective of MC. He's unlikely to go out of his way to protect the others or to defend them to people. But with MC? He shows up when they need him. He stands up for them even when they aren't around.

And I'd say that Solomon would do anything for MC. The others might ask him for help and he's often willing to give it, but he has no problem saying no to any of them (except perhaps Asmo, but even then I think he would if it was a big deal). But for MC, Solomon would lay down his life. Nobody can convince me that a man who would travel back in time just to help bring MC back wouldn't also take a bullet for them if it came down to that.

I don't think a situation like that would ever actually happen. And I also think that Solomon would try to find other ways of fixing things - like I said, this man is smart.

Still I think perhaps the most obvious evidence of him treating MC differently comes down to how much he's been willing to tell them about himself. He's told MC about his childhood, his loneliness, the way MC reminds him of his humanity, how he's jealous of the brothers. He's said these things to MC directly. He's honest and forthright with them.

Not that he lies to everybody else - in fact, I think he's a pretty terrible liar. But he keeps his secrets. He just doesn't tell them to anyone else.

Sure, he still has some secrets from MC. But I think he's keeping them because doing so is keeping MC safe. And I think in the end, he'll tell MC everything.

And THAT is the biggest difference. Solomon loves MC, but Solomon also trusts MC with the deepest truths of himself.

Sitting there staring at a slowly heating up spot on the floor, watching the tile crack under the extreme heat before a smoldering circle appears. The guards awkwardly clear their throat, drawing her attention away as the smoldering stops. Ah, that was Sol causing that. Oops.

Definitely recommend Eidolon Playtest! If the name doesn't tip you off, it's a podcast about playtesting a system some of the people on the podcast designed, Eidolon: Become your Best Self. It's currently still being developed, but here's the link to version one in case you're interested in the game!

The core premise is very much something like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and especially the Persona games, where there are eidolons, a manifestation of a person—or beast's!—soul, and though as you can imagine there's lots of wacky plot shenanigans along the way, the core of it is character development; "become your best self", after all.

As for the podcast itself, I listen to podcasts before I sleep and I had to stop with this one because I kept chuckling myself awake. And it's not just sillies all the time. All the characters and their relationships are genuinely amazing—the players really take chances to have the PCs interact with each other, even later in the story once there are a lot more characters.

And since I see you enjoy dndads, I have a feeling you'd love the "Reveal Your Master Plan" mechanic—think of when someone goes "hey actually, I think Glenn would make an elevator that goes faster every time you press the button"; it's that but actively encouraged since it's a part of the game, and it injects a lot of fun chaos into each episode!

Sound interesting? Where do you start? I have no idea lol

Their first campaign begins a little rough since they're still settling in and learning the system, and it's pretty long, too—if you look at the listing there's both a "Pop" and a "Rock" campaign, and even though they don't seem connected at first there's an overarching storyline…which adding up everything, is like 90+ episodes! Still, it's a good way to get used to the mechanics, and it has really touching relationships and explorations of power structures and identity, and I definitely would recommend it if you're alright with the length.

A more digestible place to get started would be one of the mini campaigns (the ones that only have 4 episodes), which are all gm-ed by different player members of the podcast rather than the person who gms the main campaigns, and each person brings their own flair to running the game. These are all a little less narratively tight than the longer ones but are still all a lot of fun!

Daft and Giants are my favorite of the bunch, if you're wondering.

Lastly you could start with their ongoing second campaigns, Ska and Disco! These ones are also connected and focusing on a school mystery gang, with one being in the past, and the other in the future after the original crew mysteriously disappeared. They're more longform also, but are still on episode 11 as of writing, so it's pretty easy comparatively to get into.

The concern with starting with the later ones is you might get confused by the mechanics, especially since they moved from using dice to a tarot deck (which works a lot better imo! but might be strange when going back)—the stories are all independent of each other though, and there's no worries about missing out if you start off with them.

Oh also since we're on Tumblr after all, I'd be remiss to not mention plenty of the characters are LGBT lol, and there's currently a really interesting exploration of coming to terms with trans identity in the Disco campaign, but you didn't hear that from me-
