Got an email at work today that my workplace will now allow the use of co-pilot in development.

So I replied and asked what the firms stance is on copyright and licenses when it comes to large language models.

Because if their stance is that running code through a large language model strips copyright and licenses away then they have just given every worker permission to do that to the firms code and sell it to our competitors. Should take me a few hours to write the python file.

OR is their take that the copyright and licenses survive?

Because some of the code used to train co-pilot is under the GNU license meaning any codebase using it must be published as open source under the GNU license.

Either way, the firm is fucked.

Sometimes I feel like the discourse about AI art misses the actual point of why it’s not a good tool to use.

“AI art isn’t ‘real’ art.” —> opinion-based, echoes the same false commentary about digital art in general, just ends up in a ‘if you can’t make your own store-bought is fine’ conversation, implies that if art isn’t done a certain way it lacks some moral/ethical value, relies on the emotional component of what art is considered “real” or not which is wildly subjective

“AI art steals from existing artists without credit.” —> fact-based, highlights the actual damage of the tool, isn’t relying on an emotional plea, can actually lead to legally stopping overuse of AI tools and/or the development of AI tools that don’t have this problem, doesn’t get bogged down in the ‘but what if they caaaaan’t make art some other way’ argument

Like I get that people who don’t give a shit about plagiarism aren’t going to be swayed, but they weren’t going to be swayed by the first argument either. And the argument of “oh well AI art can’t do hands/isn’t as good/can’t do this thing I have decided indicates True Human Creativity” will eventually erode since… the AI tools are getting better and will be able to emulate that in time. It just gets me annoyed when the argument is trying to base itself on “oh this isn’t GOOD art” when AI does produce interesting and appealing images and the argument worth having is much more about the intrinsic value of artists than the perceived value of the works that are produced.

I'm disgusted by how the tech world is becoming the enemy of human creativity.

There's nothing more beautiful to me than the natural world. Right behind that in my appreciation is human creativity. How dare anyone try to remove art, acting, and writing from our daily lives, just to make a quick buck. Just to show that they can make a model that can do impressive things.

Fuck AI. 

It's coming to take most office jobs eventually, too, since it's so good at 'thinking' 'creatively'. A handful of well-paid executives poking AI models while the rest of us starve to death in the streets.

Do capitalists - excuse me, 'Job Creators' - think about the fact that if the middle totally drops out, their corporations will have no consumers to buy the products they're trying to sell?I guess it won't matter anyway, they'll just 'diversify', they'll have robots buying other robots' assets in stupid schemes somebody from Harvard Business School will code. 

The end game is robots and execs owning everything, everyone else starving and shooting each other, all the while blaming foreign countries, blaming trans people, blaming 'globalists'.No, no, it's none of that, it's Fucking Econ Majors and Tech Bros. They'll be the death of the last remaining shreds of BOTH the 'middle class' and the 'creative class'. Two whole classes of workers at the same time, wiped out economically in the course of a decade.

I seriously hope I'm wrong. The only system I believe in that could make this prediction wrong is perhaps AI being less useful than we all fear it will be. Perhaps it will run face-first into the day-to-day problems of 'workflow'. But only until that workflow is changed. I give my entire industry (software development) about a decade, tops, until it will employ about 10% of the humans it currently does.

mind u i'm not even a chatgpt user i hate when my coworkers use it to write emails cuz it makes them sound like victorian children but this specific fight (mostly fanfic) writers seem to have with it is so bizarre to me. people who use genAI for writing stories were never going to engage with actual stories anyways so you're not affected by it in any way.
