CHAPTER TWO ─ start afresh.

Narrator's Perspective

"Oy! You over there!" hollered the girl standing in line behind Yumi, "You're holding up the entire line. Hurry up, we don't have all day!"

Yumi's head swung to look at the girl who spoke, "Sorry," she murmured an apology as she caught up with the rest of the queue. Eunyoung stood in front of her, just as confused.

They both were clad in their high school uniforms, bringing back nostalgia which couldn't erase the feeling that they had gotten lost in time. Was this a hallucination? A flashback? Neither of them were able to figure it out. As they spotted an empty table and took a seat, Eunyoung looked around the massive hall, attempting to recognize it. A wave of deja vu came over her, "Where are we? Is this-" Her voice trailed off as she made sense of the familiarity.

"What? What is it?" asked Yumi in anticipation.

"This is our cafeteria from high school" she whispered, unable to believe it herself.

"This is Jagam High School?!" she shrieked, not realizing how much attention she had drawn to herself as a result. Heads turned to look at her and students began to whisper.

"What's wrong with her?"

"What a weirdo..."

"She's realizing this now?"

"Isn't that our senior?"

"Keep your voice down," Eunyoung shushed her, slapping her shoulder.

"I don't understand," Yumi's embarrassment never surfaced due to her desire to clear the foggy haze of confusion in her head.

"Beats me," Eunyoung sympathized, taking a bite of bibimbap from her plate. As the taste hit her tastebuds, a feeling of deja vu swept over her, "The nostalgia is crazy. What happened to us? How did we end up here?"

"It's almost as if we teleported between times."

After gulping down their lunch as fast as humanly possible, Yumi and Eunyoung rushed to their old- or current- classrooms. They dashed through the hallways, which were almost empty during the lunch break and sprinted up the stairs.

On entering the classroom, Eunyoung went straight to the calendar hung on a softboard at the back of the room. "2008," she whispered.

"What?" gasped Yumi.

"We've time travelled to 2008," Eunyoung couldn't believe it herself. She reached for her desk, which was in the exact place it used to be fifteen years ago. Rummaging through her bag, she looked for the Sonaki CD. To her surprise, she found it in the front pocket, exactly as she had kept it after the concert. 

"Does this have anything to do with it?" Yumi queried.

"That's what I was thinking," she suddenly realized that Sunjae attended the adjoining school, which would mean...

A frantic Eunyoung tore down the hallway, each pounding step echoing her mounting worry. The stairs became a blur as she took them two at a time, the need to reach a certain destination gnawing at her. Her legs burned with exertion, but she pushed on, driven by an unseen force until finally, she burst through the school doors and sprinted towards the pool.

Just as she reached the gate, a gruff voice stopped her in her tracks. The stern watchman, his weathered face etched with disapproval, barred her entry. "This area is off-limits, child," he boomed. "Go back inside."

Undeterred, Eunyoung's determination only intensified. Skirting the perimeter of the building, her eyes scanned for a way to see what transpired within the forbidden zone. Finally, a glimmer of hope – a small, forgotten window offered a peek into the forbidden aquatic world. Relief washed over her as she peered through the dusty pane.

Inside, a scene unfolded before her eyes. The pool, usually a serene oasis, had transformed into a battlefield of friendly competition. Half a dozen boys, sleek figures cutting through the water, participated in what appeared to be a mock race. As they finished, their bodies erupted from the surface, a symphony of droplets and triumphant cheers.

Eunyoung's gaze darted across the pool deck, searching with frantic intensity. Then, amidst the jubilant chaos, she spotted him – Sunjae. Her heart, a heavy stone in her chest moments ago, began to lighten. There he was, clad in a swimming costume, a  blue towel slung casually over his bare torso. A genuine smile stretched across his face, a stark contrast to the dark premonition that had been haunting her. In that moment, the weight of the future, the knowledge of a terrible fate that awaited him, seemed to recede for a glorious, fleeting moment. All that mattered was the sight of him, alive and happy.

Eunyoung's little rendezvous to the swimming pool of the neighboring school had cost her one entire History lecture. Lost in  worry and the subsequent relief of seeing Sunjae safe, she completely lost track of time. By the time she sheepishly crept back to her classroom door, a full hour had elapsed. The stern face of her History teacher greeted her, with surprise (given Eunyoung's usual punctuality), but with a hint of disapproval that quickly morphed into exasperation. 

The lecture was in full swing, and Eunyoung, red-faced and stammering apologies, was banished to the hallway. There she stood, for what felt like an eternity, the closed classroom door a barrier not just to the ongoing lesson but also a symbol of her own lapse in judgment. The droning murmur of lecture notes from within only amplified the emptiness in her stomach  from the gnawing guilt of disrupting class. 

Finally, after what seemed like an age, the dreaded hour ended, and a new teacher arrived. This one, perhaps sensing Eunyoung's remorse in her slumped posture and downcast eyes, took pity on her. With a curt nod and a muttered warning, the teacher unlocked the door, allowing Eunyoung to slink back in, vowing to never again let her emotions override her common sense.

Yumi greeted her with a teasing smile and gestured for her to sit down beside her. Attempting to shake off the embarrassment from her punishment, she took her seat and looked straight forward at the blackboard.

"What the hell did you do?" asked Yumi in whispers.

"I paid a visit to the swimming pool," she whispered back, her unwavering eyes glued to the backboard.

"Swimming pool? Why?" as she pondered over the possible reasons Eunyoung would go there, all of a sudden, the realization hit her. She smirked at Eunyoung, "Oh, I see how it is."

This time, Eunyoung turned to look at Yumi, understanding her implications, "Oh, shut up, You know it's not like that. I went so I could see Sunjae."

"In a swimming costume, that is," Yumi added cheekily.

"Stop putting words in my mouth and focus on the class."

nayoung's notes: i had a lot of internal conflict (marcus brutus core 🎀) about how to start this scene. what i originally decided with delphi was that they wake up at home, but i thought it would be more fun if they ended up somewhere abruptly, and what better place to embarrass my (our) characters than in school? hope u liked it!

Xavier | Partners (part 1)

summary: a day of misunderstandings causes you to doubt yourself, unknowingly challenging Xavier's restraint. It doesn't help that Tara has a suggestion that makes his blood boil.

a/n: once upon a time this fic was supposed to be 1-1.5k words max lol but it'll definitely be 3-4 parts now *sigh*

It was the day you realized you had a reputation in the office. Something you had been so oblivious towards, always buried in your work. But once you noticed something was off, it was all you could notice and you didn’t like it one bit.

After six months as a UNICORNS branch Deepspace Hunter, you thought you were an okay employee. Not the most social or anything, but certainly not a… tyraucnt? But the crying intern in front of you made you doubt it all. You had just bumped into the poor boy in the hallway, causing him to drop some files. When you bent to pick the papers up and hand it to him, he just started bawling? Full crying. You were getting stares and whispers from every direction, even after you got the boy to his feet with all the papers. You were just trying to make sure he was okay, not overworked or anything, but he had just ran. Bolted. Away from you.

You couldn’t figure this out on you own so you hunted Tara down but she wasn’t supremely helpful either.

“Well,” Tara scratched her head, “to be honest, I don’t really know how you come across to everyone because you’ve been my friend since day one, but…”

You raised your brown and she looked around, embarrassed, to see the rest of the floor trying to eavesdrop not so discretely. As soon as they realized you were watching, everyone glued their eyes to the task, whispers drifting up again.

Tara gave you a big smile and a thumbs up, but you returned to your desk with a frown. Frustrated, you leaned back and stared at your computer screen with a scowl, crossing your arms. Did people hate you? Did someone make up bad rumors about you? Were you difficult to work with?

You realized that only two months in, your circle had shrunk down to Xavier, and you hung out with Tara quite a bit, and you and Simone had made plans but… wait, was that everyone you felt close to at your work? You knew others like Nero, Jenna and Andrew but you couldn’t really say you were close. Maybe the reason why people had a negative impression on your is because most of the time you were out with Xavier on missions, where things tended to go wrong or escalate some other way almost every time.

You glanced at Xavier while biting your thumb.

People just didn’t understand that Xavier is a magnet for dangerous situations. He was strong, sure, but without you he was a bit of a loner. Plus, he looked like a lost puppy half the times.

Your gaze wandered to the polaroid pinned to your softboard. It was a cute photo of you, Tara and Simone at a sleepover you just had with the girls last month. Simone was lovely, and a formidable force in the office but she boosted your gun to impressive stats without you even asking! And who didn’t like Tara? She was a part of 8 clubs, and she was the head of 2, she knew how to talk to people and make them feel included phenomenally.

You had a great friend group, you decided. So, the issue was you yourself then?

 Huffing, you rolled your chair to bump into Xavier’s so he would look up from his files.

“Hey, I want to ask you something,” you glanced around, searching for more eavesdroppers as you leaned in close, “How do you see me?”

“Uh.. what?”

“Like how do I come across? Am I a mean person? You’ve spent enough time around me. How would you say I’m like as a person, or as a colleague?”

Xavier tilted his head, regarding you with mild confusion, “But you’re my friend?”

“Yes, yes, but,” You waved his words away, scooting forward on your chair till his knee was trapped between the two of yours.

Ignoring his nervous gulp, you stared down at him, not letting him lean away from you, “But how would you describe me as someone to work with?”

Hushed murmurs rose around you both. Glaring at your audience, you patted his thigh (why did he flinch?) and whispered, “Never mind for now. Wrap up at 6 today. I’m getting off early, and you’re coming with me. No excuses.”

You drifted your chair back to your desk, determined to wrap up the paperwork asap, not catching the long look Xavier placed on you.

Last working day of the week meant the streets were crowded.

You had texted Tara that you’ll hold a table, and you texted Simone to come as well so that you could get to the bottom of why you had such a negative reputation. All you had to do now was reach the bar soon enough for a table to be free. This wasn’t proving easy as Xavier was being pushed back by the crowd, so you grabbed his hand and pulled him through. At some point though, you heard a resonating thunk and Xavier’s hand slipped from yours.

You swiveled around to see Xavier had run face first into a street sign. Doused by guilt, you fussed over him and apologized profusely, and despite half his face being flaming red he just assured you he was fine so you gently tucked his arm to your side and slowly this time, led him to the bar where you continued to fuss over him.

You could tell he felt better when he started ignoring all your questions about icing his face and just rested his chin on the table and stared at you with a weird look and his signature barely-there smile.

“Okay, the reason why I asked you the question today is because I think I’ve done something wrong and people at the office hate me but I can’t figure out what I did-“

You broke off due to the urge to laugh at Xavier’s utterly scandalized face.

He sounded absolutely indignant, “That cannot possibly be correct. There has to have been a grave misunderstanding.”

You leaned forward to sip your drink, enjoying this moment far more than you should be, “But why is that so strange? People can have an issue with me, I just don’t understand why it feels like all of them but they’re still entitled to their opinions.”

Xavier scoffed and then started listing off reasons one by one on his fingers, “I’ll tell you why that’s ridiculous. You’re an absolutely wonderful person who goes out of her way to- “

 With each point he made you felt a flush rising higher up your face.

“- reassure people during a Wanderer attack and help find family members who ran away in the confusion, which has happened multiple times. You always ask me and anyone else around if they want something from the break room whenever you go to make your own coffee. That one time you got the special plushy at the arcades and the kid started crying, you didn’t even think twice before giving it to him despite the fact that you’ve been eyeing that limited edition plushy forever. You even gave your backup pad to that one woman you said you met during the New Year’s celebration in the women’s bathroom even though that meant you had to take a long detour to buy more pads even though you were exhausted- “

You leaned back, a bit stunned. You didn’t realize Xavier was paying attention to these things. For a second you wondered if you were a bit too… clingy? For him to have noticed such things? Because he was a pretty scatterbrained guy at times, so you must be a bit too loud and in his face for him to have kept track of all these things. You swept an appreciative gaze across him, who was still listing points off.

“Okay!” You put a hand on his arm to get him to stop, as you ducked your head to hide how flushed your face was, “Okay, I get it. You have your reasons to disagree.”

Barely convinced, Xavier just crossed his arms and stared off into the bar, looking like he’s still listing more point in his head.

He’s an insanely good friend to be so defensive about you, you thought as your gaze drifted down to his arms. His biceps flexed a bit, and your thoughts kind of melted in your brain. You took a gulp from the drink you ordered, a little out of focus as your gaze continued to slide down, at his thighs. They’re pretty close to your thighs. And they’re actually really nice thighs…

Your hiccup tore you away from what must be drunk thoughts. Yeah, drunk thoughts about a coworker, your work bestie to be honest, he’s your partner for heaven’s sake! And he’s your neighbor! And friend. And he’s really cute. Quite handsome. Very handsome in fact, especially when he looks at you after you both defeat a Wanderer, with all that concern in his annoyingly perfect blue eyes. Or when he’s yelling at you for support during a fight. His voice is something else when he yells. You rarely see him angry, so no wonder its does something to you when he finally drops his sweet guy persona, although you do love getting to push him around a bit-

WHOA. Whoa whoa whoa, what the-

You slammed your glass down at the table, trying to blink away your tipsiness. You reined your thoughts back inside the way you fight your bed to tuck new sheets in: with an unhinged crazy determination to get it all UNDER CONTROL. Right. Now.

“Is everything okay?” Xavier leaned forward to get a better look at your face, his arm coming up to cover the back of your chair and you knew if you made eye-contact your thoughts will unravel again so you just put up a finger at him, and Xavier, oh Xavier, just froze. Letting you take a moment.

“Hey!!

“Thanks for saving us a seat!” Tara popped up on the other end of the booth, and just dropped her coat, bag and jacket on her seat, dousing you in stunning sobriety and shattering the bubble between you two,” Simone is just paying the cab and I really have to go pee. Hi Xavier! I’ll be back in a sec.”

Before either of you had fully registered what happened, she was gone. You blinked at Tara’s stuff, remembering what the occasion was. As you came back, Xavier cleared his throat and softly scooted back from where he was almost about to be pressed up against you. You slightly shivered under the absence of his warmth.

Turning to him you almost stammer out, “Ah, I’m sorry I was just so caught up, I forgot to tell you, I asked Tara and Simone to join us. I know this is…”

This is what? This is not what he usually prefers, yes, but in the light of what had just happened, it felt awfully presumptuous of you to finish that sentence.

“I’m sorry, I should’ve told you earlier- “

“No, it’s alright, I didn’t give you a chance either- “

“If you’re uncomfortable…”

“… It’s fine,” Xavier looked at you with a soft smile, sinking back in his seat. Your knee brushed against his. He continued, “I just wanted to know if you were okay back then- “

“Oh! Oh… yes! Yes. Yes, I had just realized that…” You drifted off. In order to not think about all the things that you had just mentally put in a ‘Do Not Think About This’ box, you remembered that you probably developed a bad habit of being a bit too forward with Xavier. You sensed the familiar spiral.

“There it is again.” Frowning a bit, Xavier searched your eyes for answers about what was going on in your head that you didn’t share with him twice now. His grip on the back of your booth tensed a bit but who was to know.

“What’s bothering you?” His voice was soft and for a second you felt a slight prick of tears.

You ducked your head, shame welling within you. You had to confirm it now, the nagging doubt was too painful for you to linger on, so with as steady a voice you could afford right now, looking down at your hands clasped in your lap, you said, “Xavier? Do you think I take you for granted?”

If you were watching his face, you could’ve seen how thoroughly confused you had made him, but you took the silence as an unwitting awkward affirmation, so you continued to confirm, “I would appreciate if you were honest with me right now. Do I bother you?”

Xavier’s jaw could’ve been on the ground. He bit back his frustration at the sheer insanity of your ask but before he could do anything Simone reached the table. The groan of the wood clenched under his hand was hidden under the din of the pub at its rush hour.

Xavier shot the woman a cursory nod and you got caught up in helping Simone settle down and order their drinks. He shifted in his seat, crossing his arms to maintain composure in public. With all these misunderstandings and interruptions, it was going to be a long night.

i haven't sent anything in a while, cause um nothing's really happening, just tests and studying BUT today i went to the refurbished games room w my friends and we checked out the new stuff (new carrom tables, a foosball table, a few mini tables for board games, whiteboards on the walls, a softboard to hang up art, it's all rly cool)

we played ludo (i lost but it was fun anyways) it was rly loud while we were in the games room actually... the kids were yelling so very loudly and the room made their screams echo

but i haven't been around people other than at school in so long i wasn't annoyed by it, just very happy to be out doing smth with people around

and then we went to the playground and spun around on the merry go round thingy until i almost threw up </3 (i have a video i might send you if my friends are okay with me showing you their faces)

(when i laugh i literally go HAHAHA like i do in tags lmao)

ohhhh did you like playing those games ? my new college has games like that but i have never played .. so i'd love to know what you think <3
