Royal Tiaras Highlights: Spanish Floral Tiara
The piece was designed by J.P. Collins in 1879 as a gift from King Alfonso XII of Spain to his future wife Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria. The tiara was sold in the 1930s by the family when they went into exile and it was eventually bought by Francisco Franco as a wedding gift to Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark, future Queen Sofia of Spain. The tiara is a personal possession of Sofia, but Queen Letizia has worn it publicly in many occasions.

On this day (Sept 28) in 1943, #German diplomat Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz secretly informed #Danish resistance that the #Nazis were planning to deport all Danish #Jews.
From there, #Denmark became the only #Nazi-occupied country in #Europe to make it a nationwide effort to actively resist the Nazis’ attempt to deport & exterminate its Jews.
The Danes organized to smuggle Jews by sea to neutral #Sweden – this is what made Denmark so unique. There were small numbers of incredible people willing to help save Jews even at great risk in every country, but only in Denmark was it a nationwide effort.
Nearly all of Denmark’s 8,000 Jews lived in #Copenhagen (which certainly made things easier for the Jews and the Danes who wished to help them since it was a mere 20 miles from the Swedish border).
First, the Danish people helped find hiding places for thousands of Jews in homes, hospitals, and churches.
Then, within just a few weeks, in a sort of "mini-#Dunkirk," Danish fishermen began ferrying Denmark’s Jews into Sweden (below).
The Danes managed to get about 7,500 Jews out of the country in time. The other 500 were sent to the #Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia.
As a result of the efforts of regular Danish citizens, only 51 Danish Jews out of 8,000 were killed in the #Holocaust – a comparatively miniscule number to every other Nazi-occupied country.
Bulgaria Jews
Need to clarify on #Bulgaria because, sorry, but it does not belong in the same sentence as #Denmark for actions during the #Holocaust.
Yes, there were protests both for and against deportation of Bulgaria’s #Jews to #Nazi death camps, and most Bulgarian Jews survived the war, but the Bulgarian government still voluntarily passed anti-Jewish legislation and sent more than 11,000 #Jewish men, women, and children to their deaths at #Treblinka.
Though not as prevalent as in many other nearby countries, Bulgaria had a history of homegrown antisemitism, racism, and nationalism.
Therefore, even without #German pressure, starting in July of 1940, the Bulgarian government – on its own initiative – passed anti-Jewish legislation excluding Jews from public service, restricting places where Jews could live, & restricting Jewish participation in certain professions. The Bulgarian #racist laws also prohibited marriage between Jews and non-Jews.
Additionally, the Bulgarian government helped identify, register, and mark all of its Jews for the #Germans. Members of the Bulgarian police and Bulgarian military were trained and then used to round up and assemble Jews for “transport East.”
There were also many Bulgarian “Jew-hunters” who hunted down Jews in hiding for the #Nazis.
Then, in early March 1941, Bulgaria joined the #Axis powers and assisted the German-led attack on #Yugoslavia and #Greece. Bulgaria was then permitted by #Germany to occupy most of #Greek Thrace, Yugoslav Macedonia, and Pirot County in eastern #Serbia.
In the spring of 1942, the Bulgarian government commissioned a “Jewish Affairs Commissariat” to handle the deportation of all Bulgarian Jews to Nazi death camps.
Through 1942 and into the spring of 1943, the Bulgarian government continued cooperating fully with the Nazis.
First, Bulgarian officials rounded up and deported all Jewish residents from the territories they occupied in Greece and Yugoslavia. In just March of 1943 alone, Bulgarian officials sent 11,343 Jews to their deaths at Treblinka.
However, when news of the imminent deportations of Bulgarian Jews reached the capital, opposition politicians, Bulgarian intellectuals, and members of the Bulgarian clergy openly protested deporting any Jews from the core provinces of Bulgaria. They managed to delay the deportations.
However, in June of 1943, the Bulgarian government decided to expel 20,000 Jews from Sofia to the provinces, and Bulgarian police brutally suppressed protestors.
In just two weeks, the Bulgarian authorities expelled 20,000 Jews to the Bulgarian countryside where all males were put into forced-labor camps. Bulgarian authorities also confiscated most of the property of the 20,000 deported Jews. Nonetheless, most Bulgarian Jews at least ended up surviving the war.
But, after the war, Bulgarian Jews did not feel welcome any longer and wished to return to Eretz Israel.
By 1950, nearly all the pre-war 50,000 Bulgarian Jews had made Aliyah and immigrated to Israel.
The Zionist longing to immigrate to Eretz Israel was strong among Bulgarian Jews, and many attempted to flee for #British Mandate #Palestine before and during the War.
For a time, Bulgaria permitted its Jews to immigrate to British Mandate Palestine; however, the British enforced their illegal White Paper of 1939 and closed the doors to Jewish immigration throughout the entirety of the War.
So, just after the war started, on Sept 2, 1939, when a ship with 1,400 Jewish refugees from Bulgaria, #Poland, #Romania, and #Czechoslovakia landed at #TelAviv, British soldiers met them with guns and shot and killed two of them.
After that, the British Foreign Office warned Bulgaria that if it allowed any further ships of Jewish refugees to British Mandate Palestine, the British will “expect the Bulgarian government to take the immigrants back.”
But in November of 1940, a ship called the Salvador, set out from Varna, Bulgaria with 200 Jewish refugees – including 70 children – on board.
Shortly thereafter, on Dec 12, 1940, the Salvador sunk in the Sea of Marmora. There were no survivors, and all 200 Jewish refugees drowned.

I did this list back in 2012, and got some great responses. I've updated and edited parts of the list. Again, any corrections and/or adds, message me! Thanks in advance!
When choosing godparents for their children, the parents often chose friends or other relatives. Often in royal circles, royals also pick other royals. Here’s a partial list. (Yes, I know some lists are incompelte as some of these royals’s godchildren are not royals themselves.) If you have any additions, please feel free to message me!

In 2023, Bulgaria maintained one of the lowest government debt-to-GDP ratios in the EU at 22.9%, as overall government deficits in the euro area and EU slightly increased. Government deficits rose to 3.6% of GDP in the euro area and 3.5% in the EU, while government debt levels fell across the region.
In 2023, the government deficit to GDP ratio increased slightly in both the euro area and the European Union (EU), according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the euro area, the ratio rose from 3.5% in 2022 to 3.6%, while in the EU it increased from 3.2% to 3.5%. However, government debt to GDP ratios saw a decline, with the euro area ratio falling from 89.5% at the end of 2022 to 87.4% at the end of 2023, and the EU ratio dropping from 82.5% to 80.8%.
This data, based on national reports from EU Member States in their second notification of 2024 for the excessive deficit procedure (EDP), covers the period from 2020 to 2023 and adheres to the ESA 2010 system of national accounts.
In 2023, most EU countries recorded deficits, except for Denmark (+3.3%), Cyprus (+2.0%), Ireland (+1.5%), and Portugal (+1.2%). The largest deficits were found in Italy (-7.2%), Hungary (-6.7%), and Romania (-6.5%), with ten Member States exceeding the 3% of GDP deficit threshold.
Government debt ratios varied widely across the EU at the end of 2023. The lowest ratios were in Estonia (20.2%), Bulgaria (22.9%), and Luxembourg (25.5%), while the highest were recorded in Greece (163.9%), Italy (134.8%), and France (109.9%). In total, 13 Member States had debt ratios exceeding 60% of GDP.
Government expenditure in the euro area for 2023 stood at 49.5% of GDP, with revenue at 45.9%, while in the EU, these figures were 49.0% and 45.5%, respectively. Both revenue and expenditure ratios decreased compared to 2022.
Eurostat has expressed concerns about the quality of Estonia's 2023 data due to issues with the timing of military expenditure reporting, which affects the deficit by approximately 0.4% of GDP. This is being discussed with Estonian authorities for future corrections.
Government debt at 88.1% of GDP in euro area
At the end of the second quarter of 2024, the general government gross debt to GDP ratio in the euro area (EA20) stood at 88.1%, compared with 87.8% at the end of the first quarter of 2024. In the EU, the ratio also increased from 81.3% to 81.5%.
Compared with the second quarter of 2023, the government debt to GDP ratio decreased in both the euro area (from 88.8% to 88.1%) and the EU (from 81.9% to 81.5%).
At the end of the second quarter of 2024, the general government debt was made up of 84.0% debt securities in the euro area and 83.6% in the EU, 13.4% loans in the euro area and 13.9% in the EU and 2.5% currency and deposits both in the euro area and in the EU.
Due to the involvement of EU Member States' governments in lending to certain Member States, quarterly data on intergovernmental lending (IGL) are also published. The IGL as percentage of GDP at the end of the second quarter of 2024 stood at 1.5% in the euro area and at 1.3% in the EU.
The highest ratios of government debt to GDP at the end of the second quarter of 2024 were recorded in Greece (163.6%), Italy (137.0%), France (112.2%), Belgium (108.0%), Spain (105.3%), and Portugal (100.6%), and the lowest were recorded in Bulgaria (22.1%), Estonia (23.8%) and Luxembourg (26.8%).
Compared with the first quarter of 2024, nine Member States registered an increase in their debt to GDP ratio at the end of the second quarter of 2024, seventeen a decrease, and the ratio remained stable in Denmark. The largest increases in the ratio were observed in Finland (+2.0 percentage points – pp), Austria and Italy (both +1.8 pp), France (+1.6 pp), Portugal (+1.2 pp), Poland (+0.9 pp) and Sweden (+0.6 pp). The largest decreases were recorded in Cyprus (-2.1 pp), Croatia (-2.0 pp), Greece (-1.8 pp), Lithuania (-1.7 pp), Spain (-0.9 pp), Czechia (-0.8 pp), the Netherlands and Germany (-0.7 pp), and Romania (-0.6 pp).

The Danish Royal Family
King Christian IX of Denmark (1818 - 1906) and Queen Louise of Denmark (1817 - 1898) nee Louise of Hesse-Kessel and their children
This Wednesday, a little love for the Danish Royal Family, who gave us Queen Alexandra of England, one of the most beautiful queens to sit on a throne since photography was created (no makeup, Botox, fillers, plastic surgery), and her sister, Empress Maria Feodorovna (Princess Dagmar of Denmark) one of the prettiest and most beloved Empresses of all the Russias.
So where did all that beauty come from? Most of us have seen photographs of Christian IX and Queen Louise in their older years. At least I had not seen them young. I looked for some photos, and I am including them here. Both of them were good-looking. Louise had a pretty face and beautiful eyes. And so did Christian! He was not bad-looking at all, tall and slim. The little cleft on Alexandra's chin apparently came from her father. The girls had good genes.
The House of Glücksburg, to which Christian IX and Queen Louise belonged, is a collateral branch of the German House of Oldenburg. Its members have reigned at various times in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greece, and several northern German states.
King Christian IX and Queen Louise were double cousins. King Christian was called the "father-in-law of Europe" on account of the marriage of his children to foreign princes and princesses.
Current monarchs King Charles III of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and King Harald V of Norway, as well as former queens consort Ann Marie of Greece and Sofia of Spain, are patrilineal members of cadet branches of the House of Glücksburg. (gcl)

Note
For those getting agitated about BRF representation at King Constantine’s funeral, it looks like representation has been decided on the basis of kinship rather than status.
Anne is there as Charles’ representative but also in some way to represent her father who was a Prince of Greece and Denmark and Constantine’s great uncle. Lady Gabriella is there as William’s representative but also to represent the Kent branch of the family who are descended from Philip’s first cousin (and Constantine’s great aunt) Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (I suspect the older Kents couldn’t make the journey).
The familial ties between the Danish royals (Queen Margrethe was Constantine’s sister in law), the Spanish royals (Queen Sofia was Constantine’s sister) and the Greek royal family are much closer. And although the British royals and the Greek royals had very close familial and personal ties when the Greeks were living in London (the Greeks were always invited to everything) Charles probably feels justified in sending second tier representation because Constantine was a deposed monarch. It would probably be different if he had been a reigning sovereign.
Thank you for this educated explanation.

Hello duchess! I’m new to royal watch and I just found out that queen Margareth of Denmark sister is also a queen! Is royals marrying other royals common nowadays or do you think we won’t see royals marrying royals for a long time now?
My name's Jessica :) It is not as common as it used to be. Most of the inter-royal marriages are amongst those who are over 60 or they're deposed royals whose titles don't mean anything (you regularly see the pretender to some tiny German throne marrying the pretender to a throne of an Eastern European nation that doesn't exist anymore etc). Some examples (not an exhaustive list before people start with the THIS PERSON IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE nonsense):
Anne Marie is Queen Margrethe of Denmark's sister and married King Constantine of Greece.
Constantine's sister Sofia married King Juan Carlos of Spain
Princess Caroline of Monaco is still legally married to Prince Ernst August of Hanover (they live apart).
Princess Haya of Jordan - half sister of the King of Jordan - recently divorced Sheih Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who is the Ruler of Dubai
Princess Margaretha is the sister of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and is married to the brother of Prince Hans-Adam of Liechtenstein
Lots of royals married into German or Austrian houses including Princess Birgitta who is the sister of the King of Sweden, Princess Astrid who is the sister of the King of Belgium, Margrethe and Sofia's other sister Princess Benedikte, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg's other sister Marie-Astrid etc, Prince Alois of Liechtenstein who is the heir and married a Bavarian royal.
It's not the case that royals all got some sort of memo saying they couldn't marry each other any more. It was just a natural thing. They no longer had to marry each other because countries didn't forge political alliances that way anymore. They had all been fighting each other during the wars so it was safer to marry someone from your own country. And then over time they started to go to ordinary schools or go to university with normal people or go clubbing and societal attitudes shifted and so they met different kinds of people than their ancestors would have met. So I don't think for a second that William and Kate or Victoria and Daniel are whispering into their kids' ears at night trying to convince them not to marry a royal, but whereas their ancestors might have had a pool of 10 eligible candidates to draw from because they only went to debutante balls and hunting trips with other royals, now they have access to essentially an unlimited number of people and so the probability has dropped that it will be another member of this comparatively small social class

Former King Constantine II of Greece has died aged 82
Tumblr media
The last King of Greece died today, three days after suffering a massive stroke in Athens.
King Constantine was a brother in law to Queen Margrethe of Denmark and King Juan Carlos of Spain. He was also closely related to the British royal family through his cousin, the late Duke of Edinburgh. Constantine was godfather to Prince William.
He is survived by his wife, Queen Anne Marie, and their five children and numerous grandchildren, as well as his sisters Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess Irene.

🎊 2-Year Anniversary! 🪅
I started the World Challenge around April 2022, so here's my little 2-year celebratory post with a bunch of stats that no one cares about!!
The stats:
Books read: 70
Countries completed: 66
Total pages read: 23,918
Average rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 3.9 stars
Average publication year: 2015
Average page count per book: 341
Native authors: 74%
Queer books: 24%
YA or MG genre: 68%
As you can see from the number above, it can be hard to find queer books for certain countries. I have also somehow managed to generally pick books that I like, as the ratings show!
Top Genres:
Tumblr media
Sources:
Tumblr media
Total spent: $41.39
Most of the spent is 2 months of Scribd, and some Kindle sale books. The "Other" is, ahem, when there were no affordable options, and thankfully that was low! Otherwise I managed well with libraries and free trials! (all digital)
Time Periods:
Tumblr media
