Hope this is okay to add—my best friends are working on an actual cozy TTRPG, with Ghibli films being an influence. Society of Rafa is based on community building, interpersonal relations, and healing rather than leaving home to adventure/kill your way through a world of monsters. Check it out!
That Ghibli inspired 5e book that I saw some people commenting sparked a lot of thoughts in my mind, but most of it is how we are filled with books with a lot of surface level inspirations that dont make a full critical analysis of what they are referencing and end up being not even a good homage but fail to unuderstand their inspiration, like saying that they are a cozy game but fill the rules with stat blocks and loot. It also always coming back to this nature of ttrpg in general to use pre estabilished systems that most of the time dont work with the fiction they have in mind, because that system itself is created with another fiction in mind. But the first thing that comes to my mind is that those products dont strive to be engaging and fun, is just to generate profit quick using a system that is very marketable, a visual style that is generally adored and you can post how you reach your ks money in 10 seconds.
It is a pattern not uncommon not only in ttrpg but game in general, something is popular or becomes popular and there is a lot of copycat, but with the tabletop rpg scene tradition of using srds, specially the OGL because it's tied to Dnd and it's big popularity, we see more of it, or at least a version that I don't want to call lazy, but focuesd on only generating buzz and sales on Kickstarter.

Wine cathedrals
In Catalonia, historically one of the main occupations has been growing vineyards and making wine. In the early 20th century, wine workers' trade unions and cooperatives built beautiful buildings for their job.
In 1921, the famous Catalan writer Àngel Guimerà, already in his elderly years, visited the seat of the Agricultural Union in the village L'Espluga de Francolí. Amazed at its sight, he called it a "wine cathedral". This name has become the denomination of this kind of buildings, built in the Catalan Modernist style. Many of them were designed by the Catalan architect Cèsar Martinell.
Though it's difficult to show the size and monumentality of these buildings only with photos, I have added some of them below. The photos where you can see the wine containers below are taken already from a very high point (the ground is under the wine containers).
Cooperative winery in l'Espluga de Francolí (Camp de Tarragona, Catalonia). Built in 1913. Photo by Marc Castellet and Javier Hidalgo.
Winery of the Agriculture Cooperative in Gandesa (Terres de l'Ebre, Catalonia). Built in 1919. Photos by Rafa Pérez, Casa de las Letras and Cooperativa Gandesa.
Cooperative Cellar of Pinell de Brai (Terres de l'Ebre, Catalonia). Built in 1922. Photos by Tjerk van der Meulen and Jordi Borràs.
Cellar of the Agrarian Society in Barberà de la Conca. Built in 1919-1921. Photos from Conca de Barberà Turisme and D.O. Conca de Barberà.
There are about 40 buildings in Catalonia who belong to wine workers' cooperatives and that were built around those years in Catalan Modernist style.

not going to give the blog any attention or time of day but this is your reminder that the leverage crew would never be zionists or support israel whatsoever
I wasn't going to engage with it because I value my mental health but yeah. absolutely fucking NOT
y'all really think that this group of people that actively go out of their way to go against the rich and powerful, who make it their goal to help people that are oppressed, devalued by society and taken advantage by those more powerful would at all EVER align themselves with israel? bffrrn
I'm going to go off for a few paragraphs about why this is such a horrendously ridiculous and delusional idea, but I'm not going to clog up your dash so it's going under the cut. I want to respect people who already participate in activism and need fandom space for lighter things
tw for discussion of the atrocities and war crimes happening in palestine
over 25 THOUSAND innocent people have died as a result of israeli terror the last few months alone. over 10 thousand children. entire family lines have been erased from the world forever- grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren all martyred, often together as they are sheltering from bombs and bullets until they are murdered by soldiers that laugh as they shoot and detonate bombs.
you really think that eliot 'I adopt every child I see' spencer would support a regime that let a child stay trapped in a car where her family members were martyred, not let paramedics in for days and then when they finally let the paramedics approach they kill both her AND the EMS? you think he would stand with the government that arrests children as young as 6 years old for *checks hand* being terrorists (because what fucking 6 year old is a terrorist let alone any kind of national threat. they're fucking SIX). that snipes children for throwing rocks at tanks and their apartheid walls
he and all of them would weep at the picture released the other day of the little girl handing from rubble with her legs blown off.
all of them would be horrified of the bombardment that has murdered tens of thousands of innocent civilians, women, children, men, elderly alike with no fucking care. that shoots people with their hands up waving white flags. that bulldozes graveyards and digs up bodies and probably steals organs from they dying and deceased. that bombs hospitals, governmental and archival buildings, mosques, churches, holy sites, schools and universities. whose soldiers have a trend where they go through women's underwear drawers and make lewd comments about their lingerie and how kinky they must be. who make tiktoks of them playing in decimated playgrounds and signing their children's names on bombs. who force parents to collect pieces of their children in plastic bags because they have been blown apart by relentless bombing. who shoot a grandmother holding a child's hand. who murdered a woman that dared say that she was older than the 'state' of israel.
the fact that you're posting this as israel relentlessly bombs rafa, the place they were told would be the only safe place to be, where 1.6 million people are living in tents living off animal feed because no sufficient humanitarian aid (if any) has been let through
these people that advocate for comeuppance and exposing wrongs would not support a regime that actively targets and murders journalists and their entire families.
you really think any of them would actively support a genocidal sociopathic government? fucking delusional
to a certain extent, I know that people want to keep fandom and advocacy spaces separate and I acknowledge and relate to that- when we are logged on every moment of the day we sometimes need to take breaks and engage with something else for our mental health. I need that too. and there is a very thin line when you try to apply fandom to current events because in all honesty, making headcanons about how your faves would react to X horrendous event can come off as extremely tone-deaf. I get you love your blorbos (I do too!), but actual people are suffering and it can come off as disingenuous to a lot of folks when you try to talk about your characters instead of the very real harm that is going on. HOWEVER, the other account posted in the leverage tag that the crew would be zionists and started that discourse and since it was already out there in our space I wanted to make sure that people know that this blog does not support that whatsoever.
and before this gets misconstrued: antizionism is not antisemitism. I have a lot of love for my jewish friends and followers, but saying that we can't be critical of war crimes and incessant aggression because it is a jewish state is fucking ridiculous. we should be able to hold any and all governments accountable when they do bad things (this absolutely also means I think we should hold the US accountable for enabling them and I live here. every country that is complicit needs to face consequences). saying that israel is exempt from criticism because jewish people deserve a right to a homeland isn't a great take. I completely understand fear of antisemitism and discrimination, but at some point we have to think critically and acknowledge that people are dying by the thousands and standing up for that and calling out atrocities takes precedence. jewish voices for peace has some really good content about this topic
anyways there's a random blog out there posting about how your faves are zionists splattering their rancid sponge and I want to make sure my stance on this subject is very clear: fuck israel, free palestine, and no one is free until everyone is free
#i got really fucking angry and this was kind of cathartic but honestly i'm just really fucking tired of this shit#thank u digitaldiscipline for talking me out of reblogging it with a response because that would just give the blog more undeserved attenti#free palestine#palestine#gaza#anti zionisim#fuck israel#fuck isntreal#leverage#leverage redemption#your fave is NOT a zionist#tw war crimes#also raf 'splattering their rancid sponge' is such an iconic phrase thank u for sharing that w me#I'm not going to talk about my real-life activism for privacy and security reasons but I regularly interact with people from jvp#and they are super awesome and lovely and courageous people#i really respect them. they are treated so awful in my area when we have protests at city hall from local rabbis. it takes a LOT of courage#ALSO there is a lot to be said about eliot as a character and how he isn't the best person but for the sake of him loving children i wrote#it that way. also hardison would be disappointed in you for supporting israel#mine

Rafa my beloved! <3
Just finished Rafa's so here's an info dump about my dumb child (affectionate).
When Raphael first got separated from their siblings, they ended up getting picked up by the Utroms. They kept them around teaching him similar to how the did Leatherhead. But at age 4, he ended up messing with the wrong device (which ended up being a prototype teleporter) and accidentally sent himself to Triceriton owned space.
They quickly got found by Traximus and was brought into his home. Traximus raises Rafa, though acts more like a guardian or uncle than a parent, which Rafa is fine with.
at age 12 (everythign happens at 12 lol) Traximus gets arrested for treason, and when Rafa fought back against it, they got arrested too. Both gets tossed into the gladitorial arena for the next 3 years, that is until 3 off worlders get dumped in there as well and they look far too similar to Rafa for them to ignore.
Rafa helps these 3 break everything (they've been wanting to do that for a while lol) and escapes with them at Traximus's request.
getting back to earth, Rafa ends up staying with Mikey and Splinter in the sewers. The adjustment period is pretty difficult for them. Triceritons were a very combat based society and New York just isn't. but they eventually manage it. he discovers the dramatic tv wrestling and loves it lol. Like it's right between being something they know (the arena) but clearly so fake and choreographed that it's nothing like it.
Rafa has little to no clothing preference. As long as it doesn't restrict his movements or ability to fight, he'll wear it. Mikey learned this by giving them stupider and stupider things to wear, and Rafa just wore them without blinking. (once his other 2 siblings realized that's what Mikey was doing, he's no longer allowed to give Rafa clothes anymore lol.)
Rafa's down to fight pretty much anything, except their siblings. he learned pretty quickly upon coming to earth that they hate even the idea of sparing with any of them. They used to fight to the death in the arena, they do NOT want to even risk having their sibling be on the receiving end of that.
(i don't even think they realized that themselves until the first time they joined training and was set up to spar with Donny. They just stood there, shaking until Donny picked up on something being wrong and just lead them back off the mats.)
my absolute favorite thing about them right now is just that, when they're sick/injured/or otherwise fighting impaired, they seek out one of their siblings to sit by or curl up behind. This is usually Donny since he's most likely to stay still for long periods of time and won't question him about it.

Hi Rafa!
Back again in your inbox and I have what’s probably a silly question but I am nothing but silly and goofy so I’ll ask anyway
I was thinking about yk the verious depictions of lucifer (as every sane and normal person does) and it got me wondering onwhat made you decide to characterise Lucifer the way you did, mainly because usually in modern media he’s very much seen as a anti-hero and mostly he’s seen as a good (-ish) guy that didn’t do too much wrong, the rebellion is usually very much written off as something akin to teenage rebellion and God is just seen as a disappointed parent that had no other choice but teach a lesson to his kids (and well that is of course because gods forbid someone sees God as anything less than the perfect father but I digress), for example the Lucifer series does this and in part too hazbin hotel.
And idk it was refreshing to see your read of Lucifer, he starts good and very much kidlike and then his wonder and love become corrupt I’d say, I struggle to call him evil because well for one I have what could be considered too much sympathy for him and I understand him, he was set up to fail in a lot of ways. So I guess I just wonder what made you say “no I’m going to keep the “bad” and “evil” that is in him”
(I am aware that the answer is probably just well he’s like that in most classical depictions but idk I want to hear you ramble about Luci and his development because that’s always interesting and I love it ajdhsh)
Sorry for the confused ramble anyway lots of love from Italy <3
-J :)
Hello! This is a dangerous question!! I have many many essays I'd love to write about the depiction of Lucifer in media and about what eventually led me to making Lucifer like that. It's also fresh in my mind right now because I saw that Lucifer Hazbin Hotel episode recently. (I actually don't have a ton of thoughts on Hazbin Lucifer. He is very cute, but Hazbin isn't trying to be theological I think; it's just having fun with the mythology.)
I would say that societal depictions of Lucifer always mirror a lot of the way that society has come to understand not the devil, but God, parent-child relationships, authority, tradition, and so on. Some people think Paradise Lost was the first to make Lucifer a hero, but it's actually very clear that Milton wanted his flaws to outweigh the good things, to make Satan ultimately a bad person, and to justify God's actions to us.
Like 200 years later, William Blake started saying that Paradise Lost was pro-Lucifer, though by accident: "Milton was of the Devil's party without knowing it." But Blake lives in a very different time, during the French and American revolutions and the industrial revolution. Old traditions and empire are getting shaken up, the story of Lucifer looks a lot more heroic.
I won't get too much into how Satanic panic affected things (or even the rise of anti-theist communist regimes!), though I think the Satanic panic of the 90s really exacerbated Lucifer's connection to teenage rebellion. (Also, I'm focusing on the US because of how much their media is exported and influences other countries).
But so then we got the modern Lucifer I used to see quite a bit — suave, night club owning, slutty, probably referenced bisexual, manipulator of women. I always thought this development was kind of strange. It's almost like what Blake did to Milton's Lucifer; we didn't change how the people before us thought of him, we just decided that the Lucifer we're supposed to hate is actually super cool.
But I was not super compelled by this Lucifer. And I reference these lines a lot, but the idea of Satan in Western Christianity came from several passages from the Bible, one of which is Ezekiel 28, and I was really struck with line 14: “You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you," as well as the multiple times the chapter stresses that the cherub of Eden fell because of his corrupting beauty above all.
I realized I never really saw "blameless" Lucifer, innocent Lucifer. In a lot of interpretations, he's just sort of born wrong or always a little Evil. But the lines say that he was innocent once, and I got really caught up in that. I thought of God watching Lucifer be beautiful and innocent in all that time (like a voyeur).
It felt like the next step in Lucifer's development to take the child-parent relationship between him and God and make it ugly. (Though sticking with the dichotomy of good vs evil didn't really work for me. Lucifer isn't good but he's not evil either, and the weird love and hate mixture is what brings him closer to how God is, too (to me)).
We live in a day and age where all authority is being critiqued, where we don't laugh at teenage rebellion as much. I mean, if you watch any recent Disney movie, you'll see parents learning from their children to stop the cycle of generational abuse. And, of course, with Lucifer becoming so associated with queerness (Lil Nas' MONTERO for example), the framing that he's just a metaphor for a teen rebel who will one day realize his dad was right... falls apart. Lots of teens kicked out of their house for being gay are grown up now and making shows/movies/etc.,. And I think it's always better not to shy away from trauma victims being imperfect and, occasionally, cruel.
So. yeah! I've always been surprised that Lucifer as an imperfect victim of parental abuse, running away, taking some of his sibling with him, isn't more common in general.

2023 writing gif-making round up
Rules (adapted for fic, gifs, art, etc.): Share what you made this year! It can be works you posted to Ao3, Wattpad, Tumblr, or anywhere else! You can share everything you made or just the projects you're most excited about. Thank you for the tag, @thisbuildinghasfeelings!
January
Um. Coming to terms with the idea of 2023? I dunno. But certainly nothing creative happened here.
February
Boyfriend → husband (Schitt's Creek) — A side-by-side comparison of how David refers to Patrick in season 4 and season 6. (Brought to you courtesy of a lovely text post by @jesuisici33.)
David questioning Stevie's motives (Schitt’s Creek) — A fun look at David's expressive face. 😄
March and April
An existential crisis. Or two. Or five. 🙃 Managed to finish absolutely nothing.
I did come in contact with a lot of 911 Lone Star content, however. Which explains everything that follows. Oops?
May
Marry me. (911 Lone Star) — Ah, my first gif set for this show. A parallel of TK referring to Carlos as his husband when he proposes, and then during their wedding ceremony.
Wedding → honeymoon (911 Lone Star) — Holding hands right after they first kiss as husbands. (Promo footage that didn't actually make the final episode cut). And holding hands poolside on their honeymoon.
Note: From here on out, everything in this list is for Lone Star, unless otherwise specified.
June
TK and Andrea helping Carlos get ready — A parallel set highlighting similar moments from Best of Men and a deleted scene from In Sickness and in Health
We almost forgot. Your boutonnière. — In which I attempt to put a couple pieces of unaired footage back together: the deleted scene with Andrea and Carlos + promo footage of what must be the same scene
Heart tutorial — Danielle Savre and Stefania Spampinato teach Rafael Silva how to make a heart sign with his hands at the First Responders Reunion 🫶
July
🤨 (affectionate) — Listen. I love this dynamic. Had to do the parallel set.
Nothing ever stays the same, Carlos. — A look at TK and Carlos' conversation in 2x04 in parallel with Carlos' wedding vows. The first set I wanted to do for Lone Star. Took me a while to get to it because I wasn't sure how to put it together.
August
TK needs you all to RSVP — My first attempt at this type of post. Incorrect quotes? Text post memes? I don't know what to call them, really. But it was definitely fun. And then it became the thing I did most often. Lol.
And if it never changes? // What if everything changes again? — A parallel set for me and ~5 other people, putting Tarlos in 2x04 side by side with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
September
You're a menace to society *smooch smooch smooch* — My next incorrect quotes/meme post. And my contribution to ascribing cat-like behavior to TK.
I like him a normal amount — A fandom reaction gif, essentially. Courtesy of Joey Tribbiani on Friends.
Love is stored in humans finding out we can make heart shapes with our hands — Had to revisit the heart tutorial for Rafa. This time as one of the incorrect quotes/text posts.
When you can be silly and slutty with them — Oh, I had fun with this look at TK and Carlos' relationship. 😍
Pretty sure this happened at least once — In which we learn TK was seen trying to catch a frog outside the firehouse. Obviously.
October
Carlos is lit like an angel — Commentary on that beautiful moment from 2x02 where TK falls into Carlos' arms.
I put my emotions into my cooking. // This tastes… horny? — A playful and sexy look at Carlos in the kitchen with TK, and then heading upstairs… 😏
I adore you. Why are you like this? I’m going to kiss you with such fervor… — Oh, just exploring the Tarlos relationship dynamic with a text post and a scene from 3x18.
November
Unedited Gif Game (26 entries so far) — This has been very fun. I think it was good for me to have a bunch of low-stakes gif projects where I was not in charge. Lol. I will spare you individual links to each of them. But they should all be in the tag linked here. I will probably make this an ongoing thing, as long as it's not annoying everyone.
December
Episode vs. Promo: Yee-Haw (1x02) — Let's start diving into some more unaired footage, shall we? And let's start with some alt takes on that first make-out scene.
Missing moments: then and now — From an almost-kiss in 1x02 to an alt kiss from their wedding.
You're a miracle, TK Strand. My miracle. — A rather large close-up gif of that alt wedding kiss. Why? So we can see the teardrop that beads up under Carlos' eye.

Sunday Snippet
the lovely @therealgchu reminded me it is Sunday and thus a snippet day! thank you <3
I've been spinning a lot of plates lately and getting a touch fatigued by it. It's a curse of my own making, I knew going through with putting the newest two plates up on the sticks would lead to this and did it anyway.
we've got Through Plasma and Flames, Lyssa Shrike and her antics, A Wild West Birthday with the Liberated crew, Doc and the gang, and whatever we want to call Varala's business. and other, smaller projects I haven't shared...
It's alright. I'll find my groove again. Find the order or priority again.
Today though I do have a fresh, hot off the keyboard snippet. It's from the next Libertatia story and below the cut
--
“Second order of business,” Bella reached over and rubbed Del’s arm,
“Sophie has asked for a wild west themed party for her birthday. And because of one of her distance learning classmate’s recent birthday party she’s got some big ideas.”
“Like?” Becker raised an eyebrow.
Bella let out a breathy laugh, “Sophie would like a party where we have a little town set up for games and activities and everyone wears period accurate costumes. She’s got it all thought out with Bog running the mock saloon slinging Boom!Pops and snacks and various crew running activities and games.”
“A whole town?” Becker looked more confused, their brows furrowed and nose wrinkling up as they thought.
“The facade of a town,” Jay laid a patient hand on her friend’s shoulder, “I remember the party that sparked this idea, the kid’s family had a tiny kingdom facade set up with a mock tavern and all the bells and whistles.”
“That’s the one,” Bella looked to Jay, “but unlike that little girl’s party where everyone was in loose approximations of fantasy costumes, Sophie wants accurate costumes for everyone helping run the party. Originally she said she wanted everyone in period accurate costumes but I was able to get through to her that that was quite a big ask for all her friends and classmates and their parents to find appropriate costumes.”
The idea sounded fun to Rokov. It sounded like something he would have loved to have had growing up. It also made sense with how excited Sophie always was to snuggle up next to her Pa and watch the old Earth films and shows he and Del had collected over the last year.
“Well the party town is doable,” Del glanced over to Rokov, who nodded in agreement, “the property is more than big enough. I know Bog will jump at the idea, as will Jazz and her team.”
“When you say she wants them accurate, what do you mean?” Jay asked.
“She wants the costumes to look like the the outfits seen in those old westerns she’s been watching with her dads.”
A smile slowly appeared on the good doctor’s face as she looked back at Bella, “how many costumes? Who all is she expecting to be dress up?”
“The family, sans Rafa. Thankfully she said he’s too young to be a cast member. After that its anyone considered working the party. By my estimate that could be fifteen and twenty outfits. Another saving grace is she doesn’t want everyone to look like, and these are her words, main characters.”
Sam laughed into his glass just as he was about to take a drink, carefully sitting it down as he continued smiling, “so we’re all farm hands?”
“Actually the Coes are expected to look high society,” Bella winked at him, “and The Delgados are the founding family of the town.”
“But some of them will be fine in jeans and a flannel,” Jay rubbed Sam’s shoulder as he sat back feigning disappointment at the idea, “some suspenders and a bandana along with an appropriate hat all that would be needed to finish the look.”
“Yup,” Bella said, “and she also said not every girl needs to be in a skirt. She knows some, like Jazz and Cora, will chafe at the notion. Her only big insistence is that everyone needs something pink. A necktie, ribbon, bandana, something on their outfit needs to be pink. And a specific shade,” Bella sighed as she rubbed her temple, “same color as that little dress for her stuffed ashta.”
“Lil’ miss Sophie wouldn’t happen to have any ideas for her costume, would she?” Jay asked, “or any super specific ideas for anyone else?”
“She’s happy to let everyone dress themselves,” Bella looked nervous, “she does have an idea for her own. I haven’t given her the thumbs up because I don’t have the faintest clue how to pull this off and I didn’t want to just assume that you’d be available to help.”
“Are you kidding?” Jay looked back at her with a growing giddiness, “might take a little time to find materials but I know just who to call to get things moving. You’ll need to get a headcount first and roles set so we can go over potential outfits and then I can get the ball rolling.”
“Just like that?” Delgado asked as he snapped his fingers.
“Do you have any idea how often I get to flex my Ph.D outside of a lecture hall?” Jay laughed, “you’re damn right I’m going to help make costumes for my niece’s birthday. Are you up to wearing a old three piece fitted suit.”
“For Sophie? Sure,” Delgado smirked, “bigger question is whether her classmates and little friend’s parents are going to be willing to come out to the homestead. We might have been cleared but we’re still known.”
“Sophie wants Fox and Becker there as lawmen for the town,” Bella said, “I think having two rangers present, even off-duty, will put their minds at ease.”
“And even if not many show, we can still make it a fun day for our princess,” Rokov added as he rubbed Rafa’s back, “plus I bet we can have a bit of fun with our fake town once the princess goes to bed.”
“Old west poker tournament?” Becker pondered aloud while glancing around the room.
“Maybe not a tournament,” Rokov shrugged lightly, “but Bog could switch from Boom!Pops to beer and we could all let loose a little.”
“We can ask around tomorrow,” Delgado took Bella’s hand and kissed her knuckles, “why do you look nervous still, Azúcar?”
“It’s a lot to ask on top of everything we’re doing,” she said quietly.
“It’s a fun ask,” Jay assured her, “and you knew I’d say yes. So what’s the problem?”
“A party like this is going to draw attention,” Bella paused, studying Del’s face before turning to look at her old friend, “after everything that happened a few months ago I don’t know that we want that.”
“They wouldn’t dare,” Del said softly.
“He’s right,” Sam added, “last few months have been damage control for that house in Akila City. Jacob has loved sharing all the petty little drama swirling through Core circles.”
“Yet they are still free and clear,” Bella pointed out, “I don’t see either of them being temperate now.”
“Don’t worry about them,” Del urged, “let’s focus on having some fun.”

Encanto OC Event Week 2
Part 2: Tomás Herrera & Others
(Part 1 Here)
The second half of my OC relationship info post - this'll include some info about Tomás's bonds with my other OCs, as well as those background OCs' relationships with each other and canon characters.
@encanto-extended-edition
Tomás in regards to his natal family:
Tomás is the youngest in a family of four, born to Lucía and Horacio Herrera.
Lucía was a schoolteacher and volunteer in the town library, who passed away when Tomás was still a child. Tomás loved and admired his mother, considering her to have been a saint in life. The memories he has of her are fond ones, recalling her as being a kind woman without a bad word to say about anyone. He thinks highly of her optimism and humility, and her ability to make anyone feel understood and listened to.
Lucía as well as Tomás's older brother, Mateo, are both canonically deceased as per the events of the story the Herrera family is introduced in. This leaves Tomás and his father as the last living of their family within the Encanto.
Horacio used to be a mason, having to retire early due to weakness in his legs. Between this and the loss of his parents, his wife, and eventually his oldest son, Horacio sometimes thinks he's cursed - but his one silver lining is his remaining son, Tomás. Horacio has zero qualms about being openly affectionate with Tomás both physically and verbally, and though he's a little oblivious at times, he only wants the best for his boy. Tomás in turn is a loyal and protective son to Horacio, willing to put up with a little embarrassment if it makes his father happy. It doesn't matter how old Tomás gets, he'll always be his papá's conejito.
Art by cringecanto (right)
It's a bit self-indulgent of me, but I'm of the mind that when Tomás marries into the family, Casita springs up a small in-law suite for Horacio so he won't have to spend his days in an empty house. I also am of the mind that in their youth Horacio and Bruno were quite friendly with each other, due to both more or less being underdogs with not a lot of friends between them.
Horacio likely approached Bruno before his wife's passing, just on the off chance he saw her make a miraculous recovery. That isn't what he saw, of course. But though devastated, Horacio accepted the result with as much grace as he could and didn't blame Bruno or his visions for the bad news.
They ended up losing touch when Bruno became more withdrawn and eventually "left", but upon Bruno's return to society their friendship ends up picking right back up where it left off. When Tomás marries into the family and Horacio tags along, he and Bruno spend a good amount of their time having tea and playing cards as old men tend to do.
The rest under the cut to spare the poor dashboards out there!
The Patch:
The Patch, or El Parche, is the group name I use to refer to Camilo's small group of older friends, including Tomás (as introduced in the previous post). They're childhood friends; as a unit and individually they're all well-liked young men within their peers and the community as a whole, decently popular in different ways. They initially were meant to be unnamed background characters whose designs were pulled from random Encantownies, but I accidentally got attached to them and now they all have proper designs and development. Such is my life.--
Cristián Vargas, Rafael Molina, Santiago Torres, Tomás Herrera
Santiago (22) is the oldest not only of the friend group but of his own siblings, of which he's got 6 younger sisters and brothers. He's the designated 'mom friend' by nature, easily slotting into leadership positions and able to keep a handle on multiple goings-on at once. That said he very much is a mother hen type, a bit fussy and prone to scolding his siblings and friends (usually Rafael) whenever they start steering towards bad decisions.
Tomás and Santi are usually on the same page when it comes to caution and forethought, contrasting with Rafa and Cris's more go-with-the-flow attitudes. Santi's compassionate nature makes it easy for him to pick up on what Tomás is feeling without him voicing it, taking it upon himself to either make decisions based on what Tomás would most prefer or urging the others to do so instead. Tomás appreciates Santi looking out for him, feeling it alleviates pressure off of his own shoulders when he's unsure of what to do.
Rafael (21) is the most boisterous of all of them, the beacon of activity and extroversion to balance out his more subdued companions. He's a risk-taker and extremely liberal-minded about topics that usually wouldn't be openly bragged out, often leading to Santi urging him to keep it down (which will inevitably be ignored or expanded upon specifically to make Santi flustered).
His loud and brash personality clashes with Tomás's reserved ways, but the two have a unique bond despite the expected incompatibility; Rafael is not at all discouraged by Tomás's quietness and Tomás isn't put off by Rafael's brazenness. They both think the other is easy to communicate with - Tomás never has to guess what Rafa's feelings are and Rafa likes Tomás's predilection for being a listening ear.
Cristián (20) is far old enough now to have an identity and social circle separate to those of his twin brother César, but when he was a young child he used to be very shy and hesitant to leave his brother's side. When Santi and Rafa became his friends it was the first time he felt comfortable with something (or someone) that was more or less his own - so when his new friends started chatting with Tomás he felt a little threatened. Fears of abandonment were unfounded though, as not only did his friends not dump him in favor of the New Kid, but he very quickly realized why they liked Tomás and ended up getting attached to him too.
As adults they have similar mellow temperaments and get along quite nicely, though Cris's vastly improved self-assurance has made him a lot more laidback and unflappable than the more organized and prim Tomás. Tomás admires Cris's ability to be both steadfast and considerate, unwavering in what he believes in but knowing when to handle situations with delicateness and care.
When Camilo entered the picture and turned the Patch into a five-man-band, all four of the older members collectively decided that he was more or less their joint little brother. Santiago attempts to provide Camilo with proper advice and look out for him in ways an older brother should, which often means trying to make sure Rafael keeps his crude language in check around him. Rafael usually does not, taking a completely different approach to being and older brother and totally enabling Camilo's mischievous nature. Cristián is somewhere in the middle, oftentimes siding with Santi or Rafa purely based on what he think would have the most entertaining result.
Beyond this though Cris is a unique source of understanding for Camilo, as Cris is the only other person he knows who doesn't experience romantic attraction for anyone and has no interest in dating. He could have asked Bruno, of course, but solidarity feels a little better coming from someone close to his own age rather than his quirky hermit uncle.--
Cris, Santi and Rafa are the older brothers to Cecilia, Alejandra and Juancho (the town kids) respectively.
Other relationships to Encantownies include:
Santi and Alejandra have five other siblings, and José (the tall fellow Camilo shifts into near the start of the movie) is their tío. Osvaldo is a tío to Rafael and Juancho, as well as their teenaged sister. Cris's parents are seen bringing Cecilia into Casita before Antonio's ceremony, and his twin brother César is the young man who asks Luisa to help upright his leaning house.
Other OCs:
Claudia Reyes (19) is the young lady with the drum seen during The Family Madrigal, whose family owns the music shop they're playing in front of. Beside her are her brother-in-law on the left and her father on the right.
She's Rafael's long-time girlfriend, on his same wavelength of open-mindedness and free spirit. They've been in a strange will-they-won't-they situation since they were teenagers, with Rafael playing it off like they're not all that serious and just messing around. Everyone knows Rafa's totally full of it and is head over heels for her though, including Claudia who's more or less just waiting for him to finally get around to proposing. They're going to have at least 4 kids together.
She knows the rest of the Patch more or less as her boyfriend's friends, but there's still rapport between them and Claudia's more than welcome to hang with the boys whenever she wants. On top of that, she's also Luisa's good friend who oftentimes will suggest Luisa try out outrageous things in an effort to push her out of her comfort zone.
The town librarian, usually referred to as the Maestro, is an enigmatic yet helpful figure in town whose mission in life is the sharing of knowledge. They can be considered everyone's friend, though like Horacio they have a kinship with Bruno that goes back quite a few years. All perfectly platonic, mind you! Additionally, given Lucía's history of volunteering in the library, the Maestro also is on good terms with the Herrera family and still keeps in touch with Horacio pretty regularly.
And I think those are the most notable relationships to get into for now! Up next will be the AU posts, and... boy, do I have a lot of those. 🫠
