WIP Wednesday
Finals season is here and my body is perpetually in fight-or-flight mode, but actually last Saturday I had some inspiration while rewatching Yuri on Ice so I punched out an intro for a fic I’ll probably never finish
Thanks @cartadwarfwithaheartofgold for the tag!
Arthur wasn’t one of those posh types who spent Saturdays having a night at the opera or kept up with fashion or wore cologne. Sure, he enjoyed good literature, and had several well-dogeared and annotated volumes of Chasseur in his room, along with multiple editions of Pride and Prejudice (the poster still up in his old bedroom at mum and dad’s was not to be spoken of), but he still spent Fridays clutching a pint with his eyes glued to the pub TV for whatever soccer match was on that night (and, on occasion, decided to express his disagreement with other such fans with the simple eloquence of fisticuffs).
Arthur wasn’t a posh type—but he did have an indulgence. He probably never would have developed it, if his auntie hadn’t introduced him to it, but she had, and so it happened that Arthur was a fan of the ballet.
Given, it hadn’t always been for the art of it. When Auntie Edith first plopped him in front of the TV as a teenager, gushing about costuming and dance steps and a lot of other babble Arthur had ignored, the thing that most caught his attention was a lot of muscular men in tights. That was quite enough to keep a young, closeted Arthur riveted to the TV, to the delight of his aunt and the head-scratching consternation of his parents. 14-year-old Arthur had quickly descended into a true fan, and as he got older, a more nuanced appreciation for the art came.
That was why the coming spring was special—as part of the ballet season, Francis Bonnefoy was coming to London.

When Yuuri gets partnered with the new transfer student, Phichit, for their science project, Phichit doesn’t hesitate to invite Yuuri over to his house to work on it. They have to make a poster showing the parts of a plant cell and present it to the class—so they agree that Phichit will buy the poster board, and Yuuri will bring his paint set and brushes from home. “No glitter, though,” Yuuri warns, while they’re having their brainstorming session in class. “Miss Minako had to ban glitter after Michele almost got a speck in his eye, and his mom threatened to sue the school.”
Phichit grins. “This is way more exciting than my old school already,” he says, leaning the entire upper half of his body over the desk towards Yuuri. This is the first time they’ve ever really talked; Phichit’s only been here a month, but he got popular fast, and he somehow eats lunch with a different group every week—the mathletes, the soccer team, the drama club. Yuuri, meanwhile, sits in the back of the classroom and tends to keep to himself. (He still eats with Yuko and Takeshi most of the time; but the two of them are in the other class this year, and also they’re kind of dating, both of which make it a little weird.)
It’s also at this moment—their desks pushed together like they’re in their own little bubble, Phichit’s smiling face inching closer to Yuuri’s, his dark eyes sparkling—that Yuuri becomes aware that the new kid makes him kind of nervous.

Russian women shamed for World Cup dating push back
Russian women shamed for World Cup dating push back https://ift.tt/2uB02nl Russian women shamed for World Cup dating push back
MOSCOW — Hundreds of thousands of foreign men have flooded into Russia for the monthlong World Cup, setting off a fierce debate in the host nation about the roles and rights of women.
Russian women who have dated the soccer fans have been shamed by some Russian commentators, denounced for allegedly undermining the country’s morals and gene pool.
The widespread, vehement criticism has shown the dominance of patriarchal and sexist views in Russia, where the concept of gender equality is a generation behind that of the West’s.
Still, the reaction against Russian women’s World Cup dalliances has been so strong that some feminists in Russia think it could actually advance their cause by shocking even conservative women who wouldn’t identify themselves as feminists.
“Even those women (are saying) ‘Enough is enough, you’ve gone too far!” feminist writer Snezhana Gribatskaya said.
A 27-year-old Moscow beautician named Mariam was one of those who fell for a foreign visitor, a Mexican soccer fan named Omar who asked her for directions to Red Square.
“He was so kind and respectful to me,” she said. “It’s because of this that I fell in love with him.”
She did not give her last name because she said the romance was a personal matter.
Yet to many Russians, her actions seem disgraceful.
“This is an era of sluts!” wrote Platon Besedin, a columnist for the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper. “Russian women are bringing shame to themselves and their country.”
A popular forum on the VKontakte social media service has posted hundreds of videos of Russian women dancing and kissing foreign soccer fans, prompting vehement condemnations of those alleged to be “ruining the country’s gene pool.”
In the first week of the global soccer tournament, Russian lawmaker Tamara Pletnyova warned Russian women against becoming romantically involved with foreigners, lest they should end up raising their children alone. She added it was even more of a problem if the men were from a different race.
Belgium soccer fan reacts as they watch a 2018 World Cup soccer match between Belgium and England on a giant screen in Jette, Belgium, Saturday, July 14, 2018. The match will determine third place.
The next day, her colleague Mikhail Degtyaryov stepped forward to do damage control.
“The more love stories we have connected to the world championship, the more people from different countries fall in love, the more children are born, the better,” Degtyaryov said.
Burger King stumbled badly while trying to counter the censorious attitudes in Russia. It ended up being harshly criticized when it offered 3 million rubles ($48,000) and a lifetime of Whopper burgers to any Russian woman impregnated by a World Cup player.
After the publication of Besedin’s column, the staff at Russia’s Cosmopolitan Magazine started a petition calling for its removal from the newspaper’s website. It has garnered over 53,000 signatures.
“We were outraged by the fact that they decided they can actually control our sex life — who we kiss or go on dates with,” said Gribatskaya, who led the drive.
Although some women have achieved powerful positions in Russia — including the widely respected central bank chief Elvira Nabiullina — their proportions at the top are much lower than in the West. That’s especially notable given that the Russian population is about 54 per cent female, one of the world’s biggest gender imbalances.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "S2U5QItPU3c", "pn_video_536718", "", "", [] ); } )(); //]]>
“In a country where the majority of the population are women, it’s crazy that there are no equal rights and that there is such a dangerous attitude toward women,” said feminist blogger Alena Popova.
Gribatskaya traces the attitudes about women to the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in Russian society and the “traditional values” that have become government policy under President Vladimir Putin. Last year, Putin signed a law that decriminalized some forms of domestic violence.
“I think now a great number of women are thinking ‘Who is this all for?’ and more and more are joining the fight for equality, for respect,” Gribatskaya said.
Mariam, enamoured of her Mexican beau, sees the World Cup as a wake-up call for Russia’s males, whose average life expectancy is only 66 1/2 years and whose health is often affected by smoking and heavy drinking.
“They had better make sure other girls aren’t scooped up,” she said. “(Foreigners) have a completely different attitude toward women. They are very well-mannered and cordial.”
English fans applaud their players after the third place match between England and Belgium at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the St. Petersburg Stadium in St. Petersburg, Russia, Saturday, July 14, 2018. Belgium defeats England 2-0.
Yuri Dud, a prominent sports journalist, suggested that she has a point.
“Foreigners are much more attractive than us … they keep themselves fit, they smell nice,” Dud wrote in a commentary declaring that Russian women should be able to sleep with whomever they want.
A 30-year-old Russian woman named Yulia, sporting a bright yellow Brazilian soccer shirt, joked about the possible benefits to Russia of such cross-cultural alliances.
“These men are definitely popular here — maybe in 18 years we’ll even have decent national football team!” she said, adding that she did not want her last name used out of privacy concerns.
Omar has gone home, although Mariam said they stay in touch, and it remains to be seen whether the foreign suitors will live up to Russian women’s expectations in the long run.
FIFA, soccer’s governing body, has acknowledged that sexism is a problem during the World Cup. It recently suggested a few remedies, including making sure that fewer attractive women at soccer stadiums are shown on TV broadcasts of the matches.
One Russian feminist noted that even FIFA’s solution is sexist.
“Publicly dividing women into attractive and unattractive ones is as bad as it can get,” Anna Fedorova wrote on Facebook. “In other words, if you are shown on television sitting in the stands, hooray! FIFA has judged you to be unattractive enough.”

Summer 2017 Anime Previews
The Summer Anime season is just around the corner with shows starting up in less than a month. When I was asked about this impending season’s shows and what I was planning on watching, I had realised that I had absolutely no bloody idea what there was to watch! So, I sat down and flipped through the Summer’s current catalogues and compiled a small list of anime serials that appealed to me the most. As we get closer to July, I’m sure that more serials will sprout up and this list may grow here and there, so I’m going to keep an open mind and not lock myself down.
Today’s post is a basic introduction of some of the shows that sounded interesting (to me). These are not first impressions or anything like that. I won’t be sharing those until the first two weeks of the Summer season. If yall would like one long Summer First Impressions post versus posts on individual serials, please let me know down below so I can prepare accordingly. Thank you! ♥
Welcome to the Ballroom (Ballroom e Yōkoso)
Studio: Production I.G.
Based off a manga series written by Tomo Takeuchi
Comedy, Sports, Drama
The story follows a boy named Tatara Fujita who, after a chance encounter, finds himself knee deep in the world of ballroom dancing.
Musings: I feel like this could be one of those shows where you expect ridiculous crap, but it can surprise you. I also really enjoy ballroom dancing, so I figured why not give it a shot. Also, I’m a whore for Production I.G.
Release: 08-Jul-2017
A Centaur’s Life (Centaur no Nayami)
Alternate name: Centaur’s Worries
Studio: Haoliners Animation League
Based off a manga series written by Kei Murayama
Supernatural, Slice-of-Life, Comedy
This is a show about a group of mythological creatures, such as centaurs, satyrs, mermaids, demons, and other humanoid creatures, who all live a very normal life together. They go to school, formulate friendships, and fall in love.
Musings: Feel-good type of shows are some of my favourite things, and sometimes school-life shows can fulfil that love that I have. I also really love mythological creatures. So if you slap the two of them together, naturally my interest will be piqued!
Release: 09-Jul-2017
Clione’s Light (Clione no Akari)
Studio: drop
Originally it was an illustrated online novel by Natural Rain
Slice-of-Life
There is a very sickly young girl, who one days falls ill and finds herself hospitalised. After two months of being in the hospital, two of her closest friends from school receive a mysterious e-mail, from an unnamed and unknown sender, telling them of a summer festival coming up in a nearby town.
Musings: The snippet was so vague that it somehow appealed to me. Is it going to be a slice-of-life? Will there surprise fantasy elements? How about a crazy ass plot twist no one will see coming? Curiosity definitely got a hold of this cat.
Release: July 2017
Dive!!
Studio: Zero-G
Originally a novel (not light novel) series by Eto Mori
Sports
Story focuses on the Mizuki Diving Club, which is experiencing some difficult times and at risk of losing their sponsorship. The sponsor gives them one year to make some significant changes and growth. They hire a new coach and diligently work towards sending one of their members off to the Olympics… all within the one year time span allotted.
Musings: Initially, I thought it would be a silly swimmer boys show. But the snippet seems really promising and more serious than other sports shows recently. Also, I’ve discovered that I’m enjoying anime that focuses on the technical aspects of working life, or recreation (i.e.: Sakura Quest).
Release: 06-Jul-2017
Restaurant to Another World (Isekai Shokudō)
Studio: Silver Link
Originally a novel (not light novel) series written by Junpei Inuzuka
Fantasy
In a poor corner of the local shopping district lies a Western-style restaurant called Yōshuku no Nekoya (Western Cuisine Cat Restaurant). During its business hours, Monday through Friday, it serves normal food to normal folks. The restaurant is normally closed on weekends and holidays. However, on Saturdays it secretly opens its doors to very unique and unusual clientele with a very unique and unusual menu to match.
Musings: Neko is in the name that means that these clientele have to be CATS!! At least that’s what I’m hoping for. I’m shameless when it comes to my obsessive love for the feline folks. Cats aside, I like fantasy and the series looks pretty, so not give it a try?
Release: 03-Jul-2017
Cleanliness Boy! Aoyama-Kun (Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun)
Studio: Studio Hibari
Based off of a manga series written by Taku Sakamoto
Comedy, Seinen
The anime follows a young soccer genius named Aoyama, who also happens to be completely obsessed with cleanliness!
Musings: I felt a strong Sakamoto-kun desu ka?! vibe from this at first, and I didn’t really care for that show. But as someone who’s also quite passionate about cleanliness, I figured I may be able to relate to the humour at the very least (and maybe acquire some new methods of cleaning… no, really).
Release: 02-Jul-2017
Netsuzō Trap
Studio: Creators in Pack TOKYO
Based off of a manga series written by Kodama Naoko
Romance, Shōjo, Yuri
Yuma and Hotaru have been friends since childhood. One day Yuma gets asked out by a boy and she agrees to go out with him. Nervous about her first date, she asks Hotaru to tag along with her. Afterwards, Yuma is quite nervous about kissing a boy for the first time and experiencing everything that goes with it. To encourage her friend, Hotaru tells Yuma that she can practice with her. After they share a kiss, Yuma begins to feel conflicted feelings for both her new boyfriend and her best friend, Hotaru.
Musings: It’s been so long since I’ve read/watched a Yuri series. It looked pretty and the premise sounded a bit fascinating to me. Also, it would be nice to watch a Queer show that I may be able to relate to on one level or another.
Release: July 2017
Vatican Miracle Examiner (Vatican Kiseki Chōsakan)
Studio: J.C. Staff
Originally a light novel series written by Rin Fujiki
Mystery
The story revolves around two individuals, Hiraga Josef Kō and Robert Nicholas, who work for an organisation within the Vatican called The Sea of the Saints (Seito no Za). This organisation is dedicated to investigating alleged miracles.
Musings: I love mysteries, especially in anime, and there’s not enough great ones (at least I haven’t seen/discovered many of them). Also the entire premise sounds really intellectual (I’m hoping) and appealing to me. Did I mention that I’m a whore for J.C. Staff as well?
Release: 07-Jul-2017
Kobini Kareshi
Studio: Studio Pierrot
An original anime series.
Slice-of-Life
The show follows six high schoolers around a local convenient store on their way home from school, chit-chatting about life and meeting girls they all like.
Musings: I LOVE simple, mundane stories that focus on everyday theatrics, especially when they are relatable and cosy. I have a feeling this will be one such show.
Release: July 2017
That does it for this post. What are some anime releasing during Summer 2017 that you’re excited about?

NWSL Week 2 preview and fixtures: Portland Thorns vs. NC Courage the rematch of a playoff classic
The Thorns and Courage were expected to compete for the Supporters’ Shield this season. They met expectations in Week 1, and face each other in Week 2.
It would have been easy to count out the Flash at the start of the 2016 season. With another year of roster turnover and a new head coach, Western NY looked like nothing more than a poorly cast shadow of its former, three titles in three leagues in three seasons, self.
Almost immediately though, the Flash took whatever that doubt was and turned it into something good. Western NY won six of its first ten, and lost just twice through the entire second half of the season. The Flash would ultimately finish in fourth, a string of late season draws the only thing keeping 2016’s biggest surprise from an even more impressive finish.
Still, facing the shield-winning and unstoppable looking Thorns in the semifinal seemed like it would be too big an ask for a team that was still pretty young and seemed to get by on physicality as much as anything else. The fourth place finishers lining up against the league’s best team in a packed stadium? You'd be crazy to have picked the Flash to win.
What transpired over the next 120 minutes on that early October night in Portland — well, yeah, crazy is one way to describe it. By the 38th minute, Western NY had a 2-0 lead. By the 39th, it was 2-1. By the 40th, Paul Riley, the Flash’s head coach, had been ejected. Eventually, in the 78th minute, Portland would find the tying goal to force extra time. There, the Flash again took a two goal lead, and although Portland got one back, the Thorns ultimately fell short, and Western NY found themselves headed to the title game in Houston.
youtube
A week later, the Flash would lift the trophy as league champions, pulling off another extra time miracle and then executing one of the calmest, coolest — from shooters and the goalkeeper alike — penalty kick wins you’re likely to see.
And sure, the Flash’s championship game win, the one that featured a game tying goal in the 124th minute of play and three saves from Sabrina D’Angelo during the PKs, was impressive and full of the kind of drama you’ve been craving, but looking back through the annals of NWSL history, it’s the one against the Thorns the week before that sticks out as one of the best games in league history.
Now, two weeks into this season, we will get another chance at the matchup that shouldn’t have ever been this interesting to anyone. The Flash, now the Courage, will open the home part of their 2017 season on Saturday with a visit from the Thorns. Saturday will also mark the return of Riley, who missed the championship game plus last weekend’s season opener serving the suspension that was the result of his ejection in the semifinal.
There are plenty of arguments to be made that what Riley and the Flash did a season ago was more of a fluke than anything else. That this was a team that ran up its scoring numbers by beating up on Boston, was mid-table at best defensively, wasn’t particularly technically gifted in general, and was mostly pretty young and inexperienced. Whatever those arguments were though, and however valid they may have looked a year ago, the Flash (who will henceforth be referred to as the Courage following a move to North Carolina in the offseason and a move to the present in this paragraph) spent the spent the first game of this season proving otherwise.
North Carolina got a big win in week one against the team they also knocked off in last season’s title game, beating the Spirit 1-0 on the strength of a McCall Zerboni goal. The Courage dominated Washington just about everywhere, leaving Stephanie Labbe plenty busy and as the only reason that the Spirit didn't end up on the wrong end of a Breakers style blowout.
On Saturday, almost everything about North Carolina’s game looked better than it did a season ago. The set pieces were better, the runs were better, the connection between Lynn Williams and Jessica McDonald — which was already good — was better, new addition Debinha added another dimension to an already dangerous attack, and all the young players who’d looked so shaky at the start a season ago were playing with the confidence of veterans this time around.
It’s only been one game though, and one against a Spirit team that’s trying to find its way following the loss of Ali Krieger and Diana Matheson in the offseason, and that was dealt another blow with a season-ending ACL injury to Joanna Lohman in the first half of Saturday’s game. The first real test for North Carolina will come this Saturday, when they take on Portland.
The Thorns, unlike the Courage, are a team that’s never had to deal with much on-paper doubt, and this season is no different. Portland is again a heavy favorite to top the league table, and with good reason. Mark Parson’s team is its usual stacked self, returning most of the core group that brought the regular season title to Providence Park a season ago. Portland also got a win in week one, topping Orlando 2-0 thanks to a penalty kick goal from Nadia Nadim and a run of play tally from Christine Sinclair.
Mostly the Thorns didn’t face much of a test in week one, though, with Orlando kind of a mess in the middle and still awaiting the arrival of Marta to fix all the offensive problems that Alex Morgan’s trip to France hath wrought. That means that like the Courage, this Saturday’s game will be the first true test of just how good this year’s version of the team is.
Portland did look shaky defensively in week one, particularly with a few curious moments from Adrianna Franch that could have been costly had the Pride had the ability to actually capitalize on any of them. Williams and McDonald still look very much like one of the league’s most dangerous scoring tandems, and similar defensive miscues could spell trouble for Portland.
The Courage wasn’t tested much defensively last week, and though they did manage to beat the Thorns in that semifinal, North Carolina hasn’t historically (as the Flash) had much luck defending against Portland’s star-studded offense. The win in the playoffs was the first time since the 2015 season they’d managed to beat the Thorns. Though both Abby Dahlkepmer and Jaelene Hinkle have sort-of started to break into the USWNT picture, the other half of North Carolina’s back four is relatively inexperienced in the NWSL. Second year player Sam Witteman spent last season in Orlando and the game against the Spirit marked the NWSL debut for Yuri Kawamura, who has played professionally in Japan, as well as with the Japan WNT.
The sequel is rarely as good as the the original, sure, but with both Portland and North Carolina emerging as early favorites, and with last year still fresh enough, Saturday’s meeting between the Courage and Thorns is shaping up to be one of the biggest games in this still young season.
