I think ifrit hates depending on zephyr for mental reassurance. Zephyr does it on their own terms, always more than happy to grab his hand when they notice his heart about to beat out of his chest but I think there’s nights were ifrit stares at the ceiling while zephyr is curled into his side and he just feels bad.

It’s his job to protect zephyr. He’s not their caregiver and he would be mauled if he ever said something like that but he feels halfway responsible for them. He’s their crutch, the person they trust when they need help, the one zephyr can rely on without pity if they need carried or need help doing something.

It’s not zephyrs job to take care of ifrit, it’s not their problem to solve when ifrit is borderline in tears because dew woke up on the wrong side of the bed and ifrits decided it’s his fault. No, zephyr shouldn’t have to hold a weight that heavy, ifrit is the tallest in their pack, can easily outlift aether, he shouldn’t need his hand held when things go wrong.

But zephyr wakes up to ifrits endless cycle of compulsion he puts himself in sometimes. They can feel his heartbeat get quicker as they lay their head on his chest, and they just know he’s lost in his own thoughts again.

“What’s the matter wildfire” they yawn, trying to blink enough sleep out of their system to be somewhat helpful.

“It’s nothing go back to sleep” ifrit gives them a small kiss on the crown of their head before trying to pull them back to his chest.

“No it’s not, talk to me ifrit”

“It’s not your job to make sure I’m ok, I can do it myself”

“I love you, which means it is my job, and since you love me it’s your job to accept that”

Zephyr can be more than pushy when they need to be. They know ifrits boundaries, they know the signs if there’s a line they shouldn’t cross. So they push, sit up and try to tug ifrit to sit up next to them.

“I just don’t want to be a burden to you. You deal with enough”

“I deal with what I deal with because you’re there to help me. Let me do the same for you wildfire”
