bluff city season 1!

a bowling alley a boxer and a bird honestly still stands out as my favorite arc. it's just such a banger. there's even a bird.

although honestly? great commitment to bird content throughout. shoutout to masks.

i think noirlandia, lacuna, and fiasco were the systems that interested me most as a player. always love to do something weird with dice

the finale worked really well! great move to draw everything together and reveal a new view of the ~bluff universe. relatedly all of ali and jack's scenes were incredible

also, i'd heard about agent heard and hector hu, and i do agree, that's gay. but i also think what's compelling about it is the depth of trust between them. like, you get the sense from heard that he feels like everything's going to work out as long as hector's there.

i would like to see more of waxwing and goldfinch :(

fantastic theme songs and episode descriptions throughout

fatt is really interesting for me as a writer, because it draws on a vast array of other media, much of which falls in my blind spots--i know nothing about anime, for example. but as it happens, i think inside baseball is the most fun way to pick up a new field like that. so i had a great time learning about wrestling and comics this season :)

i'm pretty sure the thing i'm thinking of when i imagine bluff city is duluth. small beach city with industry and business crammed in side by side. aquarium and ghost ship right off the highway. biggest christmas light display in america. visible segregation among city districts. u know.

it's very funny to me that "this american life" is apparently a huge influence on bluff city, because my father, after silently overhearing half an hour of a palisade downtime, turned to me and said that he thought the show was-- in his words-- "dnd car talk".

very excited to find out what wild new directions season 2 is gonna go in!!

one of my favourite bits in bluff city: messy business is when they’re in blough city, out in the wetlands which are set to be developed into suburbs, and one of the npcs comments on how beautiful it is and how he can’t wait to buy a house there, even though by the time his house is built the wetlands will all have been developed over and the beauty will be gone. it���s a real microcosm of blough’s specific brand of repression. everything that’s beautiful and unique will be smoothed out and commodified, collapsed into the singularity of generic, inoffensive mass appeal until there’s nothing but endless suburbs and bland pleasantness

of course, every season of fatt is banging, but the next natural step for you is either hieron or twilight mirage. both have lesbian situationships; in hieron it’s more foregrounded but it takes much longer to get there. twilight mirage starts off with one but it’s not as focal to the character. both involve ali, queen of yuri. TM also has a woman/non-binary character who is sometimes femme presenting situationship that’s an all timer. sorry if you wanted reccs based on other criteria lmao

A lot of you actually read the tags, wow. I've gotten a handful of recs in the 24 hours I asked and pretty much all of y'all tell me to go to Twilight Mirage. I did listen to most of 00 at work and I would like to thank Ali personally for making a cat girl immediately.

so i'm listening to the bluff city s1 finale, and... there's a thing that happens to me occasionally with fatt, where i'll learn about a moment by fandom reputation before i actually hear it. i'll know or reasonably guess when it happens, but i won't have any of the build-up or context. so i'll be comfortably expecting something to be funny or sad or scary... and then i'll reach the actual moment in my own listen, and it will still 100% destroy me in exactly the predicted manner. because this is a good show.

anyway, hearing "mike truck takes the other seat" sent a real and visceral bolt of fear through my body, even though i knew it'd happen at some point, and i can't even fully explain why. sangfielle who. bluff is the real horror season
