it’s  nearly  impossible  to  think  about  the  atlanta  social  scene  without  the  shin  family  coming  to  mind  .  both  of  jin - hyeok’s  parents  did  not  come  from  money  ,  but  they  both  lived  comfortably  .  both  were  children  of  immigrants  from  south  korea  ,  and  that  is  what  caused  them  to  work  as  hard  as  they  did  .  woo - yong  and  eun - mi  met  one  another  when  they  were  both  accepted  into  the  same  culinary  school  ,  but  eun - mi  originally  had  no  interest  in  woo - yong  .  he  was  known  around  their  school  as  something  of  a  player  ,  and  for  the  longest  ,  she  always  shot  down  his  advances  .

he  went  to  the  coveted  scad  (  savannah  college  of  art  and  design  )  where  he  studied  fine  arts  .  he  graduated  in  the  spring  of  2018  , and  he  continued  posting  his  art  on  instagram  before  he  was  approached  by  a  publishing  company  to  create  a  book  of  his  own  art  !  he’s  released  a  few  of  them  leading  into  this  year  ,  and  has  drawn  the  illustrations  for  a  few  graphic  novels  throughout  the  years  .  moved  to  los  angeles  for  the  big  dreamz  but  in  reality  he  doesn’t  do  a  damn  thing  but  post  on  his  personal  account  and  go  to  fashion  shows  .  he  still  does  art  and  everything  ,  but  his  life  as  a  socialite  is  more  prominent  for  him  at  the  time  .

Thought Experiment: Imagine That You Start Getting Extra 30k per Month in your Bank Account

Basically many wise men have said it many times – nothing speaks more about who you are and what you are up to better than what you spend your money on.
And please add to this body of knowledge what I have to say about it – I can tell you who you are going to become if you tell me how you spend your money.
It’s that easy.
If you got a pay hike at your job or started earning more from your work, not much, but just Rs. 30,000 per month, how will you spend it?
Take your time, answer it.
Will you start investing the money in financial instruments?
Will you buy a new car? With 30k per month EMI you could buy a decently high end car. A BMW or Audi. Is that a childhood dream?
A lot of my friends will buy a car because it will show that they have arrived in their career. It’s a powerful signal to the world that you are doing well. Very satisfying, at least for a while.
You could invest in a property. Most people from my parent’s generation will do that.
You could spend it on amazing holidays, to travel around the world. You can have several luxury holidays in a year with that, stay in 5 stars around the world, or backpack for months.
You could save up the money and after a year or two you will have a bit of savings, which you could then use to fund a sabbatical. You could also take the plunge to start a new business, or your own chamber or practice.
I know people who will take that money and straightaway spend it on some high end gadgets. iPhone X. Maybe a Bose sound system. Other stuff like that.
Here is what I would do though, tell me what you think about that. These are not hypothetical things. I have actually done these.
I will invest in hiring a career coach if I did not have one. I have had a coach for more than 1 year now. I always set goals with her, and the goal is usually to double my business revenue within a few months. I have doubled my business revenue twice with the help of my coach. I do the work, of course, but having someone to guide me along, and work out the strategy is priceless.
If I already had a coach, I will invest the extra money towards hiring a personal assistant, or a man friday, who would take away my admin work and free up more productive time. I have a personal assistant. The number of hours this frees up for me, and the peace of mind it gives me is incredible. I would rather have a personal assistant than a BMW.
I once considered buying a high end car. Who doesn’t love the validation that comes from it? Here is what I found on research. I need to have a significant budget for repairs and upkeep. I will always be worried about another scratch or another dent. It will take away time, money and freedom. What do I get in return?
I decided that it was not worth it at all. I travel by a second hand tiny bike I bought from OLX. Even if it gets stolen, I will not blink and get another. Peace of mind. Terrific mobility. I can get around massive traffic jams in Delhi. And I save a lot of money on transport that I can now spend on what I really care about: growing further!
But I spend tens of thousands every month on expensive online courses, books and workshops.
This does not mean that you should not aspire to buy a BMW or Ferrari. By all means, do so if that is what you care about. I am just saying that it shows a lot about what you prioritise, and where you are headed in life.
But if you care about growth, and tell yourself that, are you investing enough in it? If you are not, all the talk and willpower and genuine interest is no good.
You don’t need 30,000 to start. That was just to illustrate the point. You can start with 1000 or 5000 per month, depending on where you are in your life and how much you can afford. But are you spending a decent part of what you can afford on your growth?

If you have already grown quite a bit in your life, this question is even more important. It takes more and more investment to grow once you have already gotten somewhere good. Are you going to grow further or plateau hereinafter?
Constant growth requires constant investment, and that requires extra money, time and resources that you do not need to spend.
I once had a chance to see how the famous designed Sabyasachi Mukherjee invests in himself and his brand. He earns in millions. But he spends a huge chunk of his money on growing his brand (I don’t have any real number but relying on guesswork here). He spends on travelling the world to discover new trends, brilliant art, and new influences. He spends tons of money on PR, events and collateral. You will find it hard to imagine how much he pays to professionals, from stylists to photographers. He only hires the best, who usually charge 10 times more than the next best.
He spends on branding like nobody else, and it is no wonder than he has a brand bigger than everyone else.
I am nowhere close to that, nor am I in a business that works quite the same way. But I am inspired by the sheer size of investment in growth. It’s incredible. Just having a sense of it opened my eyes and expanded my horizon to new possibilities.
Will you travel to a new country just to see if you could come across new work opportunities that people in your city are not yet thinking about? Discovering new trends in technology or law firm business models? I know law firm partners who do that every six months.
I invest quite a bit of money in financial instruments and I am likely to keep increasing that investment, but I do not like the amount of uncertainty involved. I invest with long investment horizons into mutual funds. I try to take risk, because without that there are no rewards. However, I do try to diversify them as much as I can.
However, no matter how much I invest in financial instruments like mutual funds and bonds, I invest a lot more in myself, every single month. I invest back into my business. I know these two investment opportunities better than anything else and anyone else, and I am able to control the outcome best.
So I have a fixed percent of my income that goes into financial investments, but I make sure that there is another big part that goes into personal development.
Same with my time. If I spend all my time on my day job, I will not grow as fast as I wish to grow. In fact, when I look back, I see that I haven’t grown as much as I could have in the last 10 years.
Growth really accelerated as I increased my investment of money and especially time into my personal growth.
Similarly, when I started my first job at a law firm, instead of indulging in conspicuous consumption as many of my peers did, I focussed on paying down all my educational loan as fast as I could, and creating a small savings after that. That allowed me to start my own business without worrying about paying back debt and I had 3 months of living expense in the bank.
That was magical. That was freedom.
What can change your life? Here is what. Spending on the right thing and saving for the right reasons. When your money decisions are driven by purpose and guided by wisdom, your life is bound to change once and for all. The challenge, however, is to do it again and again. As you reach one level in the game, you have to play for the next level.
The area of challenge for me now is to learn how to invest in organizational growth as much as I invest in personal growth. I am still learning about it. Will share as I make more progress.

"[P] Neural network for car recognition"- Detail: The last year I attended the field of machine learning and at the end of 2018 achieved some results that I want to share. I trained a neural network to recognize a car by a photo and created this simple demo for illustration.# The dataThe starting point for the task was the Stanford Cars Dataset. Some classes of this dataset contain quite a lot of errors (e.g. models of Audi or Aston Martin are often difficult to tell apart for a human being). So I took only 48 classes from the dataset and cleaned them up. During training, the data was augmented by rotations, reflections and messing around with colors.# Base modelsSure enough, I applied transfer learning for the task. I used as feature extractors the models that are among the best performing on the ImageNet dataset (ResNet50, Inception V3 and Exception). First, I simply concatenated their outputs and stacked some dense layers on the top. This approach didn’t work particularly well - about 55% accuracy on the test set.# ApproachI tried to analyze how I recognize a car that I see in the street. The easiest thing to tell about a car is its body type. There are only a few of them and usually, they have distinct features. As a rule, a manufacturer is also not a problem. And recognizing the particular model almost always takes another moment or two. Sometimes it may take a minute if a model is rare. In this case, I look at the features like the shape of the radiator grill or of lamps. These features are decisive, I think. The shape of the doors and windows is also important. And the information about the body type and the manufacturer is certainly also helpful.It looked like a sequence to me, so I decided to try an LSTM. It should take the concatenated feature vector yielded by pretrained models and predict body type on the first step, manufacturer on the second and model on the third. And it should be bidirectional because the sequence probably works in the opposite direction as well. At the top of that, another LSTM should gather these predictions together and yield the final prediction of make and model. This approach raised the test accuracy significantly, we got about 72% on the test set.I have to admit that LSTM is a bit of overkill here. The sequence is short, so an ordinary RNN should do just as well. But LSTM is just as easy to implement in Keras and barely adds a significant lag to the overall evaluation time, so it wasn’t of the highest priority to try and replace the LSTM.# Tweaks and tricksNext, I tried to get rid of the redundant features the network might overfit to, like the characteristics of the background. Dropout layers didn’t help a lot, so I used another ready solution provided by the amazing ImageAI library. I applied the yolo model to detect a car on the image and crop it accordingly on the preprocessing step. This gave us other 10% of test accuracy.The last step was made by removing all dropout layers which gave us 5 more percent. It surprised me first, but now I think that since we got rid of almost all background after the detection step, the network could infer almost always only relevant features from the input. So the dropouts probably became more harmful than helpful after that.# ArchitectureI think there is no reason to describe the architecture we used any further, so I’ll just provide a diagram http://bit.ly/2sSfqew AnalysisThe final result, for now, is 87,5% of top 1 accuracy and 98,5% of top 5 accuracy. Top 1 accuracy means that a prediction with the highest score is correct and top 5 accuracy means that the correct answer is among the predictions with top 5 scores.Most of the errors the network makes are easy to make. For example, this Audi S4 is confused with an Audi A4 of the previous generation: http://bit.ly/2MDREfv Bentley Continental is classified as Audi A5: http://bit.ly/2sOglwG errors suggest that the network still takes color into account too much. This Bentley is recognized as Chevrolet Cobalt SS many of which are of red color in the training set: http://bit.ly/2MDRFjz is interesting how the network behaves when it sees a model that wasn’t in the training set. This Porsche 911 was classified as Chevrolet Corvette which is also a sports car of a similar kind: http://bit.ly/2sQoT6f this Honda CRV is classified as Acura ZDX: http://bit.ly/2MFLBab results are funny though: http://bit.ly/2sUvjkQ general, it looks like the network gets the idea of a car on a photo correctly. A sports car is rarely confused with an SUV and a convertible most likely may be confused with another convertible of the same kind: http://bit.ly/2MCyXJ2 think that many problems may go away if we use a bigger dataset. And that is what we are working on right now.Also, I can’t help thinking that maybe the features we get from the last layers of the pretrained models are too general. It may happen that if we use the earlier layers we get the better results. It was difficult to check while the development was happening on a local machine because the earlier layers are much bigger than the last one and demand much more memory. Build a Great Brand: Align What You Think, Do, and Say
“Content marketing is becoming marketing.” That’s the first item John Hall cites in his Forbes article about 2019 content marketing trends to watch.
Once a radical idea (despite its historical roots), the concept of replacing one-sided information pushes with two-way conversations and relationships with audiences is now commonplace with marketing teams.
“Content is one of the best tools you have for earning trust, building your brand, generating site traffic and qualified leads, and everything in between,” writes John, co-founder and president of Calendar.

Content marketing’s success prompted LinkedIn’s Jason Miller to say content marketers need to look toward what’s next. “We need to figure out what’s really fundamental to what we do, and what’s just a tactic or technique that’s worked brilliantly in the past but might not necessarily work in the future,” he writes. “We need to build our conversation around a shared understanding of those fundamentals, but not around the same endlessly repeated tactics.”
Church+State founder Ron Tite suggests content marketers need to go further – to elevate every conversation to something greater than tactics.
Doing that, he says, is the only way to win and keep the audience’s attention.
“People used to vote with their wallets, and now they vote with their time,” he says. “We’re battling for time against content providers. We’re competing against the internet, and quite frankly, it’s kicking our ass right now.”

Too many marketers hear the think, do, say alignment advice and immediately advocate for one social issue or another. Unfortunately, audiences see right through this unthinking approach, often taking to social media to point out a company’s hypocrisy.
Brands also sometimes are pushed by their agencies to jump into whatever hot conversations audiences are having. But if the conversation isn’t aligned with the brand as a whole, this approach rarely resonates.

On the other hand, Audi aired an ad on gender equality in the workforce during the Super Bowl. While an admirable cause, Audi missed a step because gender equality is not connected to the reason Audi makes cars.
“If you believe in something greater than your product and you align the behaviors and actions that reinforce that, that is worth talking about,” says Ron. “When an organization, and all the people within the organization think, do, and say the same thing, now you’ve got complete organizational alignment. And this is a marketing plan we can talk about.”
To illustrate, Ron shows a simple diagram that shows what it looks like when the thoughts, actions, and communications of an organization and its leaders and representatives are all aligned with the brand’s.
The harmonious image is quickly disrupted when the center circle rotates – and an individual thinks, does, or says things that oppose what the rest of the organization thinks, does, or says – creating an integrity gap.

These integrity gaps account for every brand failure (explosions, as Ron calls them) over the past decade.
“If, as an organization, all you do is think, then you’re a think tank,” he says. “If, as an organization, all you do is do, do, do, you’re a sweatshop. No one wants to work for you … If, as an organization, all you do is say, say, say, but you never actually deliver on what you promised, then your customer churn goes through the roof.”
It has to be think, do, and say in harmony.

Start with thinking
The first step toward a congruent, inside-out alignment is to stop and have a good, long think. Microsoft did this in 2014 when Satya Nadella took the reins and reversed a generations-old practice of denying and vilifying the competition.
Ron, who counts Microsoft as a client, remembers Satya’s predecessor, Steve Blamer’s era. “I could never go in with a Mac and present. You’d go in and they’d say, ‘Could you put a yellow sticky note over the logo?’”
During the same period, Microsoft employees consciously corrected non-Microsoft language, saying, “Don’t you mean you ‘Bing-ed’ it?” in response to someone using Google as the search-engine verb.
Satya thought differently about prioritizing Microsoft customers over its products. He realized Microsoft customers use a variety of software and hardware. He acted differently to change Microsoft’s culture. And he spoke differently by talking more about users and less about Microsoft.
Satya’s new way of thinking allowed Microsoft team members to reorient their thinking to put customers first. Without it, no behavioral or verbal strategy would have turned the stagnating ship around.

What brands do
In the past, marketers’ goals included the task of creating a customer. Today, though, marketers can elevate their thinking to affect what they (and the brand) naturally do and say. You’re not bound to the content marketing tactics of steadfast content marketing brands (think Red Bull, REI, and Nike). Instead, look at how they think and let that inform your brand’s strategy with its unique purposes and values.
Talk of change tends to motivate a few trailblazers on each team to go back and disrupt their hard-fought, well-oiled machine. To clarify, you can’t take what Ron says (or what you read on the CMI blog) and single-handedly innovate the proverbial automobile assembly line.
Most enterprise content marketing teams have spent time and resources honing clear roles, responsibilities, and performance measurements.
Even if your department is on board with the change, you should, in keeping with the assembly line analogy, dedicate one team to crafting a prototype that embodies your new philosophy. Much like a dedicated group creates a concept car.
To apply the method to marketing, Ron gives a real-life example: “I tweeted that I loved the Westin Grand,” he recalls. “They write back, boom, ‘We love you too. If there’s anything we can do to make your stay better, let us know.’”
He responded to let them know there was no shampoo in his room that morning. “A little later, there’s a knock at the door,” he says. “A woman comes in with fresh fruit. She has chocolate. She has ice water. She has this note.”
He was delighted, and, as he is a frequent speaker, many people in his audiences heard about his positive experience. Word got back to the hotel property, which decided to kick things up a notch. The next time he checked in to the same hotel, he found his favorite drink, snack, a framed picture of him with his furry best friend, 20 shampoo bottles, and this note:
Now, the Westin’s novel gesture feels natural. “They’ve done it before, and it feels just as special. They probably have a room full of the frames, and they’ve got a process,” Ron says. But the takeaway is that Westin’s personal outreach wasn’t always an “assembly line” act.
“(Content marketing revolutionaries) set out to make a change for their business through many incremental improvements that would add value to their customers’ lives,” writes CMI chief strategy advisor Robert Rose. “Only in hindsight do we see them as revolutionaries.”
Ron agrees. What you do today should not reflect another thing that weighs down your marketing task list but should represent a byproduct of your (and your corporate culture’s) rational transformation.

Aim higher than content, marketing, or advertising
Platforms and mediums will come and go. The content marketers who stand the test of time are those who build content brands around their values, not their products. And remember, if you only value your company and your products, that’s what you’ll talk about by default.
Adopt this think-do-say attitude, Ron says, and your advertisements and typical content assets can soon be interchangeable — not because they look alike or serve the same goals but because they spring from the same mindset, which drives everything your brand does and says.

“Is this PR? Is this an ad? Is this content,” Ron asks. “It doesn’t matter. It’s marketing. Let’s own it and tear the labels away.”
When you elevate the conversation and let go of labels, you can choose any tactic to support your brand. It doesn’t matter what you call it.
“Once we believe something that’s greater, once we’ve elevated that conversation, once we’ve backed it up with actions that are based on who we’re doing it for, what they want us to do, and who we do it with, that is worth talking about,” Ron says. “That is worth marketing.”

Compounding the crowd, Audi moved in with the rest of VW Group this year from its old spot in the center square between Hall 3 and Mercedes-Benz’s Guggenheim-like grand arena. Audi used to have a big, crowded, temporary arena all to itself. Dieselgate budget cuts, you know.
The Audi Elaine is a connected, electric four-door SUV “coupe” that premiered at Shanghai earlier this year (a sign of the times) and spoke to the automaker executive conducting the presser in a Cortana-like voice. The sad part is that in order to make the Symbioz the focus of its press conference, Renault gave short shrift to its other Frankfurt introduction, the Megane RS, a 276-hp hot hatch with four-wheel-steering. Now that’s the Renault we want to drive.

The A7 may well have the best-looking rump this side of the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, but grafting it on to the Continental GT is just plain lazy.

Hit: The Bentley Continental GT’s Creased Haunches
Bentley’s long overdue Continental GT replacement has a lot going for it, including a new platform from Porsche, nearly 300 pounds of weight savings, and, finally, a modernized interior. But one curious detail caught our eye in Frankfurt: the coupe’s sharply creased haunches. “[Showgoers] haven’t stopped touching it,” one Bentley flack said of the aluminum panel. But arguably more important is a tactile invitation that bodes well for the car’s market appeal.

The Isabella has many innovative styling ideas, but some old ones that didn’t work 40 years ago, and don’t work now, such as the fading paint on glass.

Hit: Borgward Smartphone Fan
No question, the best swag at this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show was this little fan that plugs into the bottom of your smartphone. It was given out by Borgward, a once-well-known German concern now reborn and backed by China, where its cars are sold. (They plan to return to Europe soon.) This little gizmo is exactly what you’d expect from a Chinese concern: Useful, amusing, cheaply made and potentially dangerous (good luck unplugging it without sticking your fingers in the whirling blades). I plan to steal about half a dozen of them by any means necessary. And what about Borgward’s SUVs, you ask? Trust me, the fan is better.

With plans to electrify their entire lineup by 2020, Jag is going gangbusters on EV tech. This much we know. But the latest surprise from Frankfurt is that the folks from Coventry are transforming electric I-Pace crossovers into a support series for the Formula E series. Built by the carmaker’s Special Vehicle Operations division, the I-Pace eTrophy racer packs a satisfying visual punch: despite its family-friendly configuration, the wide-hipped, spoiler-clad, roll cage equipped sport ‘ute looks mean enough to appease the most hardcore internal combustion apologists.

What with all the mature-but-dull designs Hyundai has introduced over the past couple of years, the Kona might be the vehicle that gives them back their mojo.

Renault gets credit for unveiling not just a concept car, but an entire house to go with it. The Symbioz is one of those Internet of Things things, a battery-powered blobbymobile that can park itself and communicate with the house (i.e. if the heat’s on in the car, the house heats up as you approach). It can fold away its own steering wheel and turn into a sitting room, which is exactly what we don’t want from a car. The sad part is that in order to make the Symbioz the focus of its press conference, Renault gave short shrift to its other Frankfurt introduction, the Megane RS, a 276-hp hot hatch with four-wheel-steering. Now that’s the Renault we want to drive.

Miss: BMW Concept X7 iPerformance
We love a big, imposing SUV just as much as the next jerk, but the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance’s odd proportions and massive maw is more off-putting than it is badass. Sure, it gains eco points for its plug-in hybrid drivetrain. But let’s leave the mean, menacing look for the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, shall we?

Hit and Miss: 2019 Bentley Continental GT
The new Continental GT is big, bold, and breathtakingly beautiful. I’d call it a hit if the back end didn’t look like it was ripped off from an Audi A7—a sin that might be forgivable were both brands not owned by the Volkswagen Group. The A7 may well have the best-looking rump this side of the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, but grafting it on to the Continental GT is just plain lazy.

Hit: The Bentley Continental GT’s Creased Haunches
Bentley’s long overdue Continental GT replacement has a lot going for it, including a new platform from Porsche, nearly 300 pounds of weight savings, and, finally, a modernized interior. But one curious detail caught our eye in Frankfurt: the coupe’s sharply creased haunches. “[Showgoers] haven’t stopped touching it,” one Bentley flack said of the aluminum panel. Manufactured using an aerospace-derived superplastic forming technique, the panels have an interesting engineering backstory. But arguably more important is a tactile invitation that bodes well for the car’s market appeal.

Hit: Borgward Isabella concept
Best concept in the show. Illustrates what happens when a brilliant designer tackles an electric car. Anders Warming, ex-Mini design chief, is one of the best young Germans in the business. The Isabella has many innovative styling ideas, but some old ones that didn’t work 40 years ago, and don’t work now, such as the fading paint on glass.

Hit: Borgward Smartphone Fan
No question, the best swag at this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show was this little fan that plugs into the bottom of your smartphone. It was given out by Borgward, a once-well-known German concern now reborn and backed by China, where its cars are sold. (They plan to return to Europe soon.) This little gizmo is exactly what you’d expect from a Chinese concern: Useful, amusing, cheaply made and potentially dangerous (good luck unplugging it without sticking your fingers in the whirling blades). I plan to steal about half a dozen of them by any means necessary. And what about Borgward’s SUVs, you ask? Trust me, the fan is better.

Instead of showing us a Tesla Model S with a kidney grille, I’d like to have seen BMW unveil something new and forward thinking, like the Borgward Isabella concept.

Revelation: Jaguar I-Pace Trophy
With plans to electrify their entire lineup by 2020, Jag is going gangbusters on EV tech. This much we know. But the latest surprise from Frankfurt is that the folks from Coventry are transforming electric I-Pace crossovers into a support series for the Formula E series. Built by the carmaker’s Special Vehicle Operations division, the I-Pace eTrophy racer packs a satisfying visual punch: despite its family-friendly configuration, the wide-hipped, spoiler-clad, roll cage equipped sport ‘ute looks mean enough to appease the most hardcore internal combustion apologists.

Hit: Ferrari Portofino
To me, a successful Ferrari design is one that looks instantly familiar. You know you’re looking at something you’ve never seen, but you also know you’re looking at a Ferrari. The Portofino is one of those cars—it just looks right, and it manages to look right whether the top is up or down. Thirty years down the road, this will be remembered as one of the great Ferrari designs, and it’s a privilege to have seen it make its world debut.

  Hit: Hyundai Kona
If the Genesis G90 shows that the South Koreans can do a great imitation of Lexus, the Hyundai Kona shows they can do a great imitation of Citroën. This car has just enough nutsy details to keep it interesting without veering off into weird (Toyota CH-R), controversial (Nissan Juke), or downright ugly (Kia Sportage). What with all the mature-but-dull designs Hyundai has introduced over the past couple of years, the Kona might be the vehicle that gives them back their mojo.

2017 Frankfurt Motor Show Hits, Misses, & Revelations
FRANKFURT, Germany — Stanley Kubrick famously had planned a pie fight between the Yanks and the Soviets for the final scene of his 1964 classic, “Dr. Strangelove.” We couldn’t help thinking about such a pie fight breaking out in Volkswagen Group’s Hall 3 at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show, where the walking lanes came to a standstill as Audi conducted its Elaine concept press conference.
Compounding the crowd, Audi moved in with the rest of VW Group this year from its old spot in the center square between Hall 3 and Mercedes-Benz’s Guggenheim-like grand arena. Audi used to have a big, crowded, temporary arena all to itself. Dieselgate budget cuts, you know.
The Audi Elaine is a connected, electric four-door SUV “coupe” that premiered at Shanghai earlier this year (a sign of the times) and spoke to the automaker executive conducting the presser in a Cortana-like voice. It was in German, so we can’t tell you who the exec is or what he and Elaine said, but we yearned for Dustin Hoffman to yell “Elaine! Elaine! ”from offstage.
Enough of the cinematic metaphors. The big celebrity highlight was when three-time Formula 1 Drivers’ Champion Lewis Hamilton drove out into Mercedes-Benz’s stand in the Mercedes-AMG Project One.
BMW and Mini moved from the front of the Frankfurt Messe, near Mercedes and VW Group, to Hall 11 about a kilometer away, which at least provided incentive to walk into the non-German automakers’ displays in-between. With General Motors gone, Opel shrunk to a smaller stand as part of PSA Peugeot, and nine other automakers having stayed home this year, the 2017 Frankfurt IAA was a smaller, more German industry-intense affair. Nonetheless, this show has plenty of cars and concepts to like, criticize and contemplate.
Hit: The idea behind the Mercedes-AMG Project One
I like the concept of a Formula 1-powered hypercar.

Hit: Mercedes-AMG Project One
The biggest buzz of the show, if far from an unqualified hit. No, it’s not pretty and looks like an update of the legendary BMW-powered McLaren F1 road car. But Gorden Wagener’s team designed it for best aero and downforce, like a purpose-built racecar. Better yet, it’s the first hypercar that will be capable of speeds of nearly 220 mph from just 1.6 liters worth of hybrid turbo V-6.

Miss: Mercedes-AMG Project One Nose
Perspective matters. My first glimpse of Project One came from a second story balcony, revealing a sculptural, wasp-waisted shape bisected by a contrasting air intake and dorsal fin in matte black carbon fiber. Coming down to ground level revealed an entirely different slant: viewed head-on, the 1,000-plus horsepower sled seemed surprisingly unemotional. Despite a more than a passing resemblance to the late, great McLaren F1, the AMG’s schnoz simply couldn’t deliver on the promise of that striking top view, let alone the sculpted, tucked, and diffuser-clad rump. Blame the slavish demands of the wind tunnel (or whatever/whomever you want), but Project One’s proboscis is a reminder that form can lose charisma when it’s tied so directly to function.

Hit: Mercedes-AMG Project One Fin
Every great hypercar needs a signature design touch and Project One’s pièce de résistance is the carbon fiber piece that spans the mid/aft section of its roof. Doubling as an air intake and a shark fin intended to improve lateral stability in high-speed corners, this smoothly contoured form manages to evoke both a sense of function and touch of whimsy.

Is it a serious effort? Who knows, but in terms of styling, it really puts Project One on the trailer. Spectacular.

Revelation: ASpark Owl
I love walking along at an international auto show, minding my own business, and getting stopped dead in my tracks by an abjectly beautiful vehicle I’ve never seen before. Case in point: the ASpark Owl, a new electric supercar from Japan that makes some bold claims just begging for substantiation. Though I couldn’t find an expert on-hand, I did learn from a large format hardbound book (seriously) that this lean, mean, carbon fiber EV weighs only 1,900 pounds and packs two motors that can scoot it to 62 mph in two seconds flat. The prose includes no shortage of buzzwords (power amplifier, supercapacitor, speed reducer), but can we just brush all that aside for a moment and drool at the Owl’s killer looks?
