i maintain that the reason goro sucks at cooking is bc he absolutely cannot for the life of him experiment with it. he can follow instructions fine but if there's vague terms or if something says to eyeball it he's completely lost. that, and goro cannot stand having to do multiple things at once and will absolutely burn a building down because he wasn't keeping a close enough eye on the stove. this is what makes akira so good at cooking, on the other hand--he thrives at experimenting and taste testing and the chaos of the kitchen is something he lives for.

HOWEVER. goro is very good at following a step-by-step guide. he is extremely meticulous. he is capable of being precise with measurements. so once he's introduced to it, goro becomes an incredible baker. it even becomes therapeutic, a method of relaxing after a long day. akira hates baking for the same reasons goro loves it, but loves having yummy tasty treats, so baking becomes goro's forte.

unfortunately, being the friend who brings baked goods to every hangout means goro is not escaping the has-a-sweet-tooth allegations anytime soon.

Ship It

What made you ship it?

Shinji's always been one of my favorite (if not my favorite) P3 characters, so just having the option was pretty predictable for me to get attached, but then the SL itself was just. So sweet? She can go all ten ranks without romancing him, and even if it's obvious he's developing FeelingsTM, they're not the focus. Kotone helps him be the person he wants to be, and he looks out for her and supports her the best he can. It was kinda no question to do the silly "Lovers" rank with those two after maxing out because it just made sense (plus, I love to get my heart crushed by the inevitable tragedy. clearly.).

What are your favorite things about the ship?

The mutual support is a huge reason why I got attached (I think about Shinji's smiling sprite asking her about her day and genuinely enjoying listening to her and asking her to keep going), so that plus the potential. I remember when I played P3P that I turned down every Christmas invitation because in my heart, Kotone went to visit Shinji in the hospital often and would let herself be vulnerable in those moments alone with him, even if he couldn't answer.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Not sure if it's unpopular, but I really don't like when I see them depicted as like... Tragic Man and Manic Pixie Dream Girl or whatever 'cause I definitely don't see 'em that way. Or if he's always like NO FUN ALLOWED 'cause yeah he's a worrier and would express that she shouldn't go run off and do reckless shit, but I think he'd hate to be controlling, y'know?

P5 is a lil more complicated 'cause I have four ships blocked because I dislike them all for essentially the same reasons, but I'll just talk about one of 'em 'cause it has both that common reason plus other issues.

Why don’t you ship it?

Classic clash of headcanon immediately since I hc Goro as gay, but their dynamic/potential does nothing for me in general. Usually I'm not a fan of m/f ships with the whole "grumpy man/sweet girl" dynamic, and I just can't see either of them going for it. Sumi ships for me are rough because I know she's only a year or two under the characters, which ordinarily really wouldn't be an issue at all, but because she spent almost a whole year of her life pretending to be someone else and only very recently returned to herself, she... comes off as much younger than she is. I just don't think they have that kind of chemistry, and I think it'd do more harm to them both than good.

What would have made you like it?

Not really sure there's anything that would've made me like them, but maybe I could understand it more if they had more going for them than "Goro didn't want her to die." (I completely understand shipping things based on potential, so I get it, but for me personally I tend to need some real Stand Out Moments)

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

I think they're both great characters who could certainly relate to each other! I really, really love the idea of them being friends, and I think they could easily bond over similar feelings of wishing they were someone else/feelings of inferiority. I wish Royal had given them more time to get to know each other as their real selves in the third semester because it would've greatly benefited them both. If only we got a 3rd semester update scene of the trio at the cafe, now with all masks dropped and able to be more honest with each other, but alas.

I figure that given some content of Royal is well, fan translated, and thinking it over, I think I can order of the PT (sans Kasumi because she technically accept Royal!Goro up front and knows him as the feral bastard he is) on the ‘Yeah Willing to Forgive’ to “Won’t Forgive Unless the Circumstances are Right” list because while Goro probably isn’t seeking forgiveness, Atlus is going to give it to Goro and I want to do my take on it:

Joker (Royal; Joker maxed out Justice Arcana and requirements for Hereward are met it): Joker in Royal knew something was up with Goro at New Rank 8 given Goro decided to almost show his true colors. Joker also had a realistic friendship with Goro that grew over time and it actually consisted of them hanging out and Goro felt comfortable to reveal his past to someone he legitimately thought he was close too. If requirements are met, Joker and Joker only wanted Goro to be alive and not dead. Basically, Joker is willing to forgive Goro for his criminal acts and attempt murder (in part because Joker knew it was rigged in his favor) and would prefer to be friends given Bad Ending Three (though how likely to be friends in reality is up to Goro and Atlus’ writing).

Ryuji (Royal and Vanilla): Ryuji was one of the PT who was nice to Goro. Ryuji also hated him the for most whole game. Ryuji also reacted bad when Cognitive!Goro showed up in the Engine Room Scene (ERS) and sprouts his nonsense. And canonically, Ryuji says he won’t forgive Goro, but he also won’t forgive Shido even more (because of Shido being a shitty father). With Royal, Ryuji saves Joker and Goro without a second thought, and Ryuji wanted Goro’s opinion when they all meet up to talk to Lavenza, meaning Ryuji thinks Goro is temporary one of them again (remember Goro flat out said that he isn’t a PT to Ka-Sumire). While its canon status is still up in the air, because Ryuji and Goro interact a lot in My Palace, it means Ryuji and Goro are most likely going to get a conversation between them and it won’t get drop. Basically, Ryuji would forgive Goro faster without realizing it and accept it without trouble because of Ryuji knowing the feeling of a shitty biological father and actually become friends with one another if/when things get settle down.

Yusuke (Royal and Vanilla): Yusuke flat out admits that he haven’t met the PT, Yusuke would have turn out like Goro. While Yusuke isn’t saying kind words to Goro (though they aren’t real cruel words either), Yusuke is one of the few PT Goro probably didn’t affect in their personal life sans the murder attempt on Joker. Similar to Ryuji’s section about My Palace, Yusuke and Goro also interact, just not as much as Ryuji and Goro. This is why Yusuke is rank third. Basically, while having a lot in common, it’s possible that because they don’t spend a lot of time with each other, Yusuke’s willingness to forgive Goro will be slower than Ryuji’s forgiveness because they don’t know how to interact with one another, with the factor clearly being their different personalities (so they won’t be friends but can be if/when they get this sorted out).

Joker (Vanilla Only; Royal if Hereward requirements aren’t met): With the Automatic Co-Op/Confidant or remnants of the Automatic Co-Op/Confidant with some Manual Ranks, Joker has a understand of Goro he honestly didn’t expect to happen but accept anyways. They won’t say they’re friends they’ll say close rivals...which is why this Joker is rank lower than Yusuke. Vanilla!Joker isn’t close to Goro and probably think he can’t see him and Goro as friends (just close rivals) because they never truly hang out one on one. Sure, Goro let it slip of his past, but Vanilla!Joker doesn’t known the real dark part Goro never tells anymore. Or if Royal!Joker does know and are close, he doesn’t think Goro and himself are close like Goro think they are and will never admit the word friends ever. Still, I think this Joker would forgive Goro after yelling at him and giving the silent treatment in part because the plan work in Joker’s favor and probably admit to being friends once before saying close rivals again (and I will say this now; anyone lower than this Joker probably won’t be friends with Goro with maybe two PT, with one working under a particular theory).

Ann[e] (Royal and Vanilla): Weird placement, but it makes sense. Goro and Ann[e] few Mementos conversations while ‘artificial’ on Goro’s end are kind of nice. Goro’s prince act (especially when it comes to food) is something up Ann[e]’s alley, in part because Goro and Ann[e] having a conversation over food and sweets is something I like. Like Ryuji, Ann[e] was one of the PT who was nice to Goro and she was the one who brought up the idea of Goro teaming up with them again to take down Shido. Like Yusuke, Ann[e], is one the few PT Goro probably didn’t affect in their personal life sans the murder attempt on Joker. With My Palace, from their few interactions, Goro and Ann[e] do butt heads because Goro is feral and unleashed here. But I remember seeing a wild fan translation of Ann[e] talking about Loki and has interesting thoughts on it and Goro (I think it was her?). Basically, Ann[e] and Goro after Goro drops his act would clash a lot, but Ann[e] will on her own time and pace forgive Goro (and I think in theory they can be friends if/when things get sorted out like Yusuke).

Morgana (Royal and Vanilla): Morgana has no idea on what is Goro real true self only until the (ERS), where Morgana pick the pieces up fast and is all ‘you actually wants friends and don’t hate Joker as much as you think’. Morgana also has a few nice words about Goro post ERS. With Royal, Morgana technically is there for the reveal of Goro being ‘dead’ with or without Goro crashing the calling card scene and isn’t happen with it. With My Palace Conversations, they interact too, but it’s like Yusuke -just not as much as Ryuji. Basically, think Ann[e] without the clashing but having the fact it will be slower pace than Ann[e].

Makoto (Royal and Vanilla): They flat out a a real hatred for one another, more on Makoto’s side, and it’s more like a rivalry at time. Makoto while not having kind words to Goro in the ERS has interesting words to Goro that are almost kind, and she is also clearly disgusted by Cognitive!Goro when he shows up. With My Palace, they interaction little but it’s a bit more civil than you think (Goro sort of compliments the PT for their plan in Sae’s palace and the main PT he talks to is Makoto). Basically, the issue isn’t Makoto forgiving Goro because she would do so (probably around Morgana’s speed maybe a bit faster); it’s whether or not Goro has it in him to be tolerable for Makoto tell it to his face.

Futaba (Royal and Vanilla): Goro killed her mother, so clearly, that’s going to factor a ton into why Futaba is near the bottom. The thing is, they have lots in common and Futaba’s feelings of her mother’s death is a bit of a mess. So, what they have in common is that they’re raised by single moms, being bastard children (Futaba isn’t  stated but because her dad isn’t in the picture it means Dad doesn’t know Futaba exist, which is closest to bastard as she can get), tokusatsu/Featherman fans (Goro isn’t confirm to be a fan but his Black Mask outfit is something that is clearly influence by tokusatsu/Featherman), and that desire for justice for their mom. 

The mess that is Futaba’s feeling of her mother’s death: Futaba never said she would forgive him in Vanilla. She is really focusing her wrath onto Shido in part because Wakaba died two years ago, Futaba accepted her mom is dead, and realizing the killer is a hitman and not the person who wanted Wakaba dead in the first place. Royal has Futaba being the one who decides that Goro and the PT should team up, and makes it clear she’s willing to put the past behind for the time being, and oddly enough -based off fan translation- won’t forgive Goro if he betrays them again. Hence, mess. Futaba has anger at Goro but it’s canonically low anger to where Futaba won’t forgive Goro if he betrays them again? 

They knew he was the traitor! The betrayal is something they planned! It may be the fan translation itself, but my interpretation of Futaba’s anger as a whole sans that is that she’s less looking of an an apology from Goro for killing Wakaba and more Goro admitting he agree to be the hitman for Shido in his plan for justice/revenge for his mother. Fuataba knows that feeling and probably wants to understand Goro’s inane logic, and I think Goro would actually admit his fault in it all because Goro knows they share that feeling longer than Futaba and feels to give Futaba more closure.

Throw in the Futago Sibling Theory, and brings up a lot of potential of fun (Royal didn’t debunk it despite TV Tropes insisting; Shido could be that much of a horn dog and cheated on Wakaba with Goro’s mother). Futaba could find out her dad is Shido and go ‘Oh this is why Mom didn’t tell him he’s an asshole’, but wonder if her mom knew about Goro and if she did, why didn’t she help him, and if Goro knew (Futaba comes to the conclusion Mom and Goro doesn’t know because she dig up his background + Royal!Joker spills about Goro’s mother), with her wondering if things went different they could be siblings and friends.

After some supernatural event that shows Goro is alive and working the Shadow Ops (Goro can’t go to regular jail for his mostly supernatural I figure after getting revealing to be alive and getting busted on a non-supernatural crime the Shadow Ops did their research and pull strings to get Goro serve time under their heavy watch look it’s the best option I can think of okay) Futaba gives Goro a demo of a possible friendship with her without telling Goro the reason. So Goro is just confused out of his mind and Futaba is all ‘oh yeah this trial run will be fun’ and continues this friendly torture. 

Haru is dead last obviously but her section deserves it’s own post because I have a hot take on some fanworks of Haru when it comes to Goro to explain it.

Primary Goals In Life: Dependant on the AU. He considers reforming society to be extremely important in all of them, though. It’s more a matter of what he decides to focus on. Default, his main focus is on the phantom thieves. Black Gloves Ren’s ultimate goal is to free Akechi from the rigged game they’re playing and give him true freedom and happiness. Post-Game Ren’s goal (which he’s embarrassed admitting) is to get into politics so that he can campaign for human rights (especially LGBT rights and criminal justice reform), and one day making it so he can one day marry the person he loves. (He also wants to propose to Akechi literally the second gay marriage is legal in his country, either in public or private.) 

Languages Known: Japanese, English (Black Gloves speaks it fluently, the others are about as good as you’d expect a Japanese high schooler to be at English). 

Secrets: Only really applicable to Black Gloves Ren. I mean, aside from the whole being a phantom thief thing. Black Gloves Ren is hiding that he remembers the timelines because he thinks nobody will believe him. 

Quirks: Basically unreadable most of the time. His poker face is godly. He flirts a lot, but if you flirt with him he’ll absolutely lose it. Cats seem drawn to him. Tends to bring up earlier conversations much, MUCH later at the worst time possible. A huge troll always.

AKIRA: okay, i think i remember telling you how i was pretty chill with akira ships. like, if done right, i don’t mind any of them, except for futaba (because they’re siblings, fu). besides our collective issues with atlus and their inability to not be weird when it comes to the girls. also, i feel like what makes the p5 kids feel the most like actual friends is also what makes it harder for me to fully invest in any individual dynamic - they all meet throughout the course of the game (even ann and ryuji aren’t close friends beforehand, and there’s definitely no drama between them) and they help each other heal and get past their abusers so that they can have a fresh start and feel free to be normal teenagers. so there’s little to actually grab onto when searching for….anything layered? like, compared to the p3 kids who have so much inner turmoil that they take out on each other - or the p4 kids, who can’t be completely truthful to themselves or each other. the p5 kids do have baggage, but not with each other. which makes for healthier bonds but also more boring ship dynamics lmao. all very cute and fluffy, but not a lot of substance. 

point is, i don’t really have much to say? like akira/yusuke is fun and silly. akira is eccentric and cool enough to go along with yusuke’s antics, and even though p5 always gives us an option to be mean, i can’t imagine akira ACTUALLY thinking that kind of stuff? like, he’s a weirdo too so he just. gets it. yusuke basically takes akira out on dates during his social link. they lend themselves well to model/artist headcanons and aus. they don’t realize they’re dating until a few months into their relationship - one of the others had to point it out and yusuke’s like ‘oh? is that what this is??’ and akira’s like ‘thank god’ bc he was too awkward to bring it up himself. futaba makes fun of them a lot.

akira and ryuji are cute too. i’ve gotten a bit fond of the boner squad (br)ot3 too. just ann/ryuji/akira being dumbasses. or ann/shiho+ryuji/akira being dumbasses while going on double dates. there’s also not really much to it - just the usual persona teen boy ‘no-homo-bromo-but-it’s-actually-homo’ fare. ryuji’s less possessive and repressed about it than yosuke is, though. which is good (ie more healthy) bc it’s more like akira found himself a human puppy jock boyfriend, and it’s cute! ryuji instantly decided he liked akira and started planning their secret handshake and selecting their cool delinquent hangout spot. and akira just smiles through it all bc he’s charmed. morgana gives akira the most judgemental stare ever when he finds out though. 

i like akira/haru bc she’s who i dated in my playthrough. they’re soft and sweet and i think a slow relationship built on patience is good for both of them. and they have the most obvious phantom thief couple aesthetic, tbh. they also have the ‘demure wallflower by day, trigger-happy hellion by night’ thing going on. i love the idea of them opening up a coffee place together (their futures align! this is the SO that sojiro approves the fastest lbr!) and akira being haru’s trophy husband (let this man be someone’s trophy husband).

akira/goro’s the one with the most depth lmao as our boy akechi gets the short end of the stick re: what everyone else got - to defeat their abuser and come out the other side a new and improved person. INSTEAD, it’s all about deep-rooted envy and what-ifs. when i replayed p5 for my friend’s benefit, she kept being like ‘wow ok akechi’s got….the most obvious crush on mc. why is he always here? why does he talk like that? omg?’ and my sentiments exactly. AKIRA’S thoughts exactly, tbh, bc what else is he supposed to get out of some of the things that come out of goro’s mouth. but it’s like….he DOES like akira, but he also resents his existence because akira gets to have real bonds and happiness despite the crappy hand dealt to him. and their own bond is based on careful lies and observing each other for any cracks in their armour. but there’s that undertone of wishing that they’d met in other circumstances, where they COULD have a normal relationship and get to know each other in a way that’s not ‘we levelled up our relationship when you shot me in the face with the intent of murdering me and framing me for my own death but really, i tricked you and you didn’t actually kill me & now we can defeat you and your dad! ha! checkmate!!’ but i love that that’s actually part of the dynamic so lmao.

MINAKO: you know, despite minako and minato being considerably different (both their external personality/appearances > emo boy/preppy girl  - and the changes in their dialogue choices > again, minako is a lot more confrontational and energetic), i pretty much just ship them with the same people?

the only exceptions of this being i ship minako with shinjiro and yukari but can’t really fathom either of them with minato. (it’s bc yukari is a lesbian and shinji does not deal well with sullen people. like, what’s he supposed to do? pat minato on the back?) 

i will also warn that it’s been….forever since p3 so i’m kinda fuzzy on details. 

anywhoooooo, AIGIS. main protag ship is aigis. idc which protag, but i must give atlus my once-in-a-blue-moon compliment because they kept aigis’ social link and her blatantly romantic feelings for the protag the exact same in portable. so minako/aigis is just as canon as minato/aigis, buahaha. anyway. robot girlfriend who starts off being somehow programmed to feel protective/indebted to minako but then starts developing real genuine feelings as she explores her humanity, minako wanting to show aigis how to enjoy herself while putting the emphasis on aigis’ feelings and opinions but also being so amazed and grateful for aigis’ love and attention. also, the difference between protags here being that while minato is silently intimate, minako is loudly loving. the utter tragedy that is aigis not being able to save the person she cares about, the imagery of minako’s head in her lap while they wait for the end is….A Lot. i think in a lot of tragic robot/human romance fiction, the robot gives up its life for their human partner so i like the reverse here - with aigis having to experience the emotions of loss and depression and overcoming that because she truly loved mina(k/t)o and now they’re gone. it’s heavy! it’s a lot! i just remembered i never finished the p3 movies! i should do that!

there’s ryouji. again, don’t care which protag - just like the idea of our mc flirting with death. literally flirting with the avatar of death. the double sides of the ship: goofy teenage flirting vs warning of impending doom. ryouji just being like ‘yeah just kill me it’s for the best i’m actually here to destroy the world or w/e’ to his gf (or bf) out of nowhere on christmas eve lmao. it’s fun, idk.

yukari! honestly, taking out all the forced hetero ship teasing made me ship her with minako more lmao their social link was just better! no offense! and their personalities mesh better too - i feel like yukari would get way too frustrated with a closed-off partner and i love concept of: the huffy takes-no-shits girl being soft for her cheerful outgoing gf. also, i spent way too long imagining the answer with minako - the aigis/minako/yukari would be heartwrenching and we deserve it. 

shinjiro! can i start off by saying it’s a good thing shinji was in p3, which did the best job of showing the characters apart from the protagonist and main plot (prob bc on the other hand, it did the worst job with social links seeing as none of the guys had them) - i feel like in p4 or p5, we wouldn’t have gotten to know him nearly as well before he died. anyway, his social link with minako is really sweet and a romance between them hits my ‘tsundere/flustered boy not knowing how to deal with affection from pretty girl he respects a lot’ checkpoints. and i need to talk about this: i feel like the decision to make him comatose instead of dead if you romance him was a double edged sword disguised as a blessing lol. because he was still DYING before he got shot, and also he wakes up just in time to find out his girlfriend died! fhdhfgdjd!

uraraka……okay: i ship her with tsuyu, bakugou, iida, mina and toga. 

oh, here’s a story. before i got into bnha, i stumbled on a bunch of deku/uraraka amvs and they were so precious. like, really, deku and ochako are the cutest goddamn things in this series. seeing them side by side makes me want to channel my inner grandmother and pinch their cheeks. it was, like, the only thing i knew about bnha at first, so i just figured i’d end up shipping it whenever i eventually got to watching it bc i’m easy to please like that. but ha. nah. it’s sad bc i love their dynamic when it’s focusing on their actual friendship but then the actual romantic hints made me want to roll my eyes so hard. it’s so BORING if you take it at face-value, and i’m so boggled by it if you look deeper bc i don’t understand what hori’s planning here. it’s irritating bc even uraraka admits that her borderline obsession (and that’s what it is, since it’s compared to TOGA’S CRUSHES…y’know, our resident yandere serial killer?) is detrimental to her growth as a hero. and i know it’s partially bc she’s a teenager but its blown so out of proportion. it’s a crush!! relax!!! like, compare to deku’s crush on uraraka where after he got over his initial anxiety of talking to girls, he - at most - just blushes a little when she stands too close or dresses extra-cute. every other time, he treats her no differently than any of his other friends. but then uraraka’s crush is treated like. this weirdly twisted admiration she doesn’t even WANT. she relates to a villain’s desire to imitate and become the person they like, she gets ridiculously jealous every time he looks at another girl, she keeps fucking up because she focuses too much on him and how to be like him. it’s weird. idk. typical fiction tropes lead me to believe i’m supposed to root for them to get together (and bnha will end with an epilogue where they have a child named after a food) but the story i’m being told makes me want to root for uraraka to succeed at getting over those feelings! idfk!!!

also, i have to laugh at the way horikoshi decided to tell us and uraraka herself that these feelings were romantic. by having aoyama just be like ‘oh you were thinking what would izuku midoriya do? could it be you love him?’ when we see multiple male friends of deku’s (iida and todo, in particular - hell, even aoyama himself) have similar WWMD thoughts and he, in turn, instantly imitates bakugou whenever he hits a roadblock (taking inspiration from to downright copying bakugou’s moves, trash talking his opponents, etc). am i supposed to see only uraraka’s feelings as romantic? why? because she’s a girl and deku’s a guy?

i like it better when iida’s involved. both iida and uraraka are so sweet and enthusiastic to counter deku’s more nervous personality, and they’re a very good trio! i tend to prefer them as a brot3 but as i said, i do ship iida/uraraka seperately! i don’t have any big reasons for it except i enjoy how contagiously energetic and silly they are around each other? dramatic too - remember the ‘REACH FOR MY HAND’ scene when all the UA students were freaking out? it’s just a simple best friend dynamic like what they have with deku but there’s no weird one-sided jealousy/competitiveness involved (luckily, iida got over it after the stain arc haha). they don’t end up feeling bad or unworthy of the praise they get from the other - which is great, because they’re very complimentary towards each other! iida is so understanding (his immediate reaction to uraraka being self-conscious about her reason for pursuing heroism) & uraraka is usually the one who vocalizes how cool and talented iida is (while also giggling her ass off whenever he gets all extra-dramatic)! tbh, curse their aborted moment after iida’s match with mei! let them praise each other!!! i like that their seats are so close to each other too - i wonder how horikoshi decided on the seating plan. but uraraka’s tendency to shake iida by the shoulders is precious & i bet you he breaks his staunch ‘follow-every-rule’ mentality when it comes to uraraka writing him little notes in class. also, maybe uraraka just deserves a sweet+rich boyfriend. it’s that easy. lmao.

i already talked about bakugou/uraraka. it’s great, dripping with potential, needs more canon interaction. i only trust a portion of its fanbase to do them properly. but this is the case for almost every big ship. (where’s that one fandom meme where one of the questions was like ‘what do you hate seeing in fanfic/content for them’ bc NOW THAT I’M ACTUALLY READING FANFIC AGAIN, LEMME TELL YOU. BEING A MULTISHIPPER IS HARD.)

tsuyu and uraraka are just genuinely a good match? i like the contrast between uraraka - who is emotional and upbeat - and tsuyu - who is calm and rational. but they’re both very perceptive? their first night at the dorms is a good indicator of how their dynamic works. the others are quick to accept that tsuyu doesn’t want to play along with the room competition, but uraraka both provides the excuse and lingers behind with worry. she probably had to convince tsuyu that it was okay for her to vocalize her feelings to the bakugou rescue squad, and volunteered to be with her during said confrontation. compare to the forest where tsuyu sweetly and calmly offers uraraka her hand because she sees her friend is scared, without actually needing to say anything else. they’re sweethearts. i absolutely adore them. oh, and i dig their earth/sky + pink/green aesthetic clash.

uraraka and mina are based on two things: 1) they’re always hugging and hanging out in official art/sketches (mina even has a selfie of them hanging on her wall of pics in her room) so i can only assume they’re super-close gal pals that should kiss, 2) i love shipping silly idiots together and it’s hard to find ships like this that are f/f but these two fit that specific chaotic mold!!! and 3) AESTHETIC DREAM!!! PINK SPACE GIRLS!!!! DO I NEED ANY OTHER REASONS? NO. NO, I DO NOT.

HOLY SHIT, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT’S OFFICIALLY CANON THAT TOGA HAS A ROMANTIC CRUSH ON URARAKA? again, i could write an essay on coding and how frustrating it is for characters like toga to usually be bi/pan. but no one’s claiming this a win for rep. and i’m FASCINATED by this dynamic. toga loves stain-sama for his ideals and how that enables her nature to kill. she loves deku-kun out of curiousity for his ideals and the fact they met when he was beaten to a pulp lmao. and she loves ochako-chan because she sees herself in her - she thinks that they share ideals. again, i have no idea what the long-term meaning for this development is but it’s clearly pitting them against each other? and adding a romantic element to that is hmmmmmmmmm. we’ll see, we’ll see. and like i mentioned above, it’s shocking and worrying and makes me ship uraraka and toga more that uraraka ALSO sees the similarity between her and toga. she’s horrified by the implications of it but she hears toga’s spiel and tries to fruitlessly deny that ‘yeah, she’s right. that’s how i am. we’re the same.’ if i were to ever write a traitor!uraraka fanfic (which i would if i could ever FINISH a writing project), it’d be uraraka/toga and uraraka trying to convince herself she’s better than toga, that she still has a moral code and her reasons for joining the league have more weight to it, and she doesn’t!!! care!!! what toga thinks of her!!! and expecting a rivalry but toga doesn’t meet that head-on because instead, toga wants to be close and connected to uraraka. toga has this kind of mature soft side we’ve seen before (with twice) that shows how she can see you at your core (her fight w/ uraraka also showed that) and i want to see uraraka to be on the end when she thinks she doesn’t deserve it and doesn’t trust toga and just being frustrated and confused over it all.

iida…….i think deku, todoroki, uraraka and aoyama are my biggest ships for him. also, i don’t ship it myself but momo/iida/todoroki’s rich kid squad is A REALLY FUN DYNAMIC AND OT3.

LET’S BE REAL: IIDA/DEKU IS SO UNDERAPPRECIATED IN THIS FANDOM. ALL IIDA SHIPS ARE BUT….IIDA/DEKU. iida’s goddamn….tucked deku into bed. threw his hat in the ring of rivals. there’s official art of iida giving deku a shoulder ride. he punched him to make him see how his actions are affecting him - “haven’t you thought about how *I* feel [about you putting yourself in peril]?!” like. bro. okaaaay. i still laugh that they got on the wrong foot initially - deku was so scared of iida sjfhhf like he was equally worried he’d be stuck in the same class as iida as he was about kacchan. thankfully, iida’s a sweetheart who cares with all his heart, and he sees all that there is to admire about deku, so they became instant friends after that. and iida means SO MUCH to deku. i pay a lot of attention to how future!deku talks in his narration, because he normally interrupts the narrative to move the story along - by talking about minor time skips, the movement of the villains, etc. but he also tends to wax a bit poetic about his friends. like when he interrupted everything to give us a side-story about how and aoyama became bffs. so we can assume that aoyama’s friendship means a lot to adult izuku. or how comforting and important it is to me that even as an adult, he refuses to stop calling bakugou ‘kacchan’. it’s sweet. in that same vein, it strikes me that deku still holds an amount of guilt for not supporting iida better during the whole ingenium-stain debacle. it ended….much better than it could have, and that experience was what strengthened iida/deku/todo’s relationship. yet as an adult, deku still wishes he could have done more. offered iida the help he needed before he went rushing in. hoo. but anyway, yeah, they’re cute! wholesome nerd boys! cute height difference! also yeah, i’m glad that iida got over his sports-festival-era feelings of inferiority towards deku. deku loves competition, but you can tell that he didn’t want that out of his relationship with iida (compare to how he outright covets a rivalry with bakugou and accepted it from todoroki w/ his head held high). it wasn’t based on healthy feelings and they’re so much better as supportive bfs.

iida and todoroki have a lot of stuff in common as legacy heroes who were trained from childhood to be heroes - with the major difference that todoroki faced horrifying abuse that prevented him from having a close relationship with his siblings and made him want to reject his legacy, while the iidas are good folk and iida’s brother means the world to him and he’s so far one of the only heroes we know to reuse a superhero identity based on legacy. and even the painful bullshit (like the ‘take out your muffler and a new, stronger one will grow in’ thing) was something that iida went through on his own accord and with warning. and todoroki’s words of encouragement during the stain arc were based on his own life lesson! they both come off as very serious and abrasive elites at first glance, but they’re actually dorky and socially awkward! but i think they get each other - i imagine they have a very calming friendship, no need for pretenses and judgement, and they deserve that! they probably think the other is hilarious too even though absolutely no one else gets the joke! they had a lot of cute moments recently since they were paired in the same 1A vs 1B match. like iida can just…tell the minute differences in todoroki’s expression and demeanour apart and knows when there’s something wrong. and they’re just so humble and sweet and can’t handle the other being self-deprecating. they’re good boys, brent.

already talked about iida/uraraka. they’re cute, i love them.

AOYAMA THOUGH. knight boys! they were so good during the exam! it really got me that aoyama didn’t even consider the idea that iida might not abandon him, might want to help him and win together instead of just use him to get ahead himself - and iida didn’t even really get the emotional realization aoyama went through there but he was still like ‘YEAH WE DID GOOD! I’M GLAD YOU FEEL BETTER! THUMBS UP! :D’ they’re both very dramatic and - i don’t know how to describe it….they pose a lot, talk with their limbs. they’re silly, is what i mean. and maybe aoyama ALSO deserves a loving, rich boyfriend. MAYBE IIDA SHOULD BE EVERYONE’S LOVING RICH BOYFRIEND. but in this case, aoyama’s boyfriend who will carry him bridal-style everywhere, much to aoyama’s glee lol. except when he’s dragging him along via his cape. whatever works.

also, side note, i find it kinda interesting that fandom pairs him up with girls like mei and camie - when i just….feel like he’d be so out of his element and sooo overwhelmed? i’m wincing just thinking about it lol poor iida.

i’m glad you specified marvel bc if you’d just said ‘comic’, i would have assumed you meant THE flash and i would be forced to sit here and think of every dc speedster ship…..well, it wouldn’t be as bad as spidey ships (honestly i’m very basic with speedsters - it’s just like ‘speedster/their spouse’ with the adults (even wally - linda or bust, tbh) and ‘speedster/their best friends’ with the teens), but we’d be here longer. 

BUT FLASH THOMPSON? i already mentioned my two big ones, with venom and peter but i’m def willing to talk more about them.

 flash/venom, a man and his gooey alien husband. i love that it’s a relationship based on self-growth and healing from past hurt and stopping destructive habits and cycles (both that cause self-harm and harm onto others). one of my favourite panels is still where flash pleads with peter to not let his anger seep into venom because venom’s gotten past all that. he’s a better person (being. alien. thing.) now and doesn’t want to turn to feeding on rage ever again. and that’s true for flash (a victim of child abuse who bottled up all that sadness and rage and took his aggression out on other kids) as well. it’s just so….nice. and venom credits all this to flash. and a thing i find about venom is that its unhealthy dynamics are all about control - you’re just its host, it possesses you against your will, you become an out-of-control villain. but with flash, venom sees a partner and home - they need and belong with each other, they communicate and cooperate, they became a superhero. also i love how they’re seriously affectionate and intimate - that’s just kind of a given with venom, i think, because you have to invite & accept it as part of yourself. but flash is so soft with venom - while he’s not as….hm, vocal about it as eddie ‘ooh my love my darling~’ brock is (he’s also a bit less obsessive haha sorry eddie), he’s so protective and likes giving venom headscratches and kissy faces to the point others react to it like they would witnessing PDA. i just want flash to be all cute and smooch his husband when they’re not like. one singular entity. CAN YOU BELIEVE THE HEALTHIEST DYNAMIC FOR FLASH TO BE IN IS WITH A SYMBIOTIC ALIEN GOO CREATURE? I CAN. AND I’M THANKFUL FOR IT.

 i also ot3 them with eddie for the sake of my peace of mind where everyone’s happy. where venom’s not torn between two loves, and eddie doesn’t feel the need to think things like ‘it’s tough being someone’s second best’ and ‘i’d like to think he’d do the same for me but part of me knows that would be a lie. it’ll always be flash.’ and having those thoughts because he literally FEELS that pull towards flash? like he inherited those feelings, he KNOWS what it’s like to love flash thompson. then there’s flash/peter, the funniest super/civvie id love triangle in the world. flash having the biggest hero crush on spider-man in high school - so many superheroes to choose from but spidey is the best, because he’s an underdog, because he gets pushed down and refuses to give up, because he’s SO GODDAMN COOL - while simultaneously thinking peter is frankly, the worst? but in that terrible way where he fixates on peter even when he’s not part of the conversation. waiting for him to leave school so he can be mean to him, feeling frustrated whenever he tries to be nice to the guy and peter either ignores, rejects or insults him in return. peter just being like ‘Sigh’ whenever flash insults him by gushing about spidey, but that’s also why he can’t dislike flash no matter how bad their relationship is. how can he hate spidey’s biggest fan? and also he probably gets a good amount of pleasure out of flash’s gf liz allen having a crush on him. peter also does this to johnny and his gf, dorrie evans - they’re frienemies in high school and kind of obsessed with each other,,,,’heRE’S MY LIST OF 500 REASONS WHY I HATE THE HUMAN TORCH’ OK PETE RELAX. so yeah, peter, despite having genuine feelings for betty brant, hits on liz and dorrie whenever they cross paths and lets them use him to make their hot blond boyfriends jealous. (peter, maybe you ARE the worst. stop it.) and then when they get to college and end up in the same friend group, flash slowly realizes that peter is like. hot now? and like, kind of a cool dude who went through a lot! like, he thought peter was a jerk in HS but he’s actually really nice when he wants to be and is always in your corner! ‘wow, i really like and respect pete! i’m proud to be his friend!’ flash thinks while staring at peter’s biceps. meanwhile, peter has no idea what’s going on because he keeps expecting flash to turn back into a dick (and steal one of his girlfriends lmao) but instead, he just keeps proving he’s a great guy! and keeps confiding in him! and uh, complimenting him a lot? and still fanboys over spidey and that’s really endearing! and oh, he’s really gonna miss him whenever he’s on tour and the idea of flash dying is unthinkable and he really likes being his roommate and he’s who he wants to be his best man and he doesn’t get why flash doesn’t seem to realize how great he is, and welp, he just punched captain america in the face for not telling him flash was agent venom. anyway, bottom line: i like dynamics that are very….long-term and constantly changing? so i tend to fall for the enemies/rivals to friends to lovers thing. or friends to enemies to lovers. but this is a former situation for sure.

also, i’m convinced every corner of the college crew pentagon happened. flash and harry MUST have at least made out once and neither was sure how to deal with the aftermath of that for a couple of months. he’s kissed and casually dated gwen AND mj - but i find it interesting that it seems like neither girl really ever considered him a contender. gwen cares about him but sees him as a shoulder to vent to about her issues with peter, and mj has a lot of fun with him but also considers him the male version of her (outgoing and bright but unwilling to commit and act serious). and he interestingly backs down quickly when peter decides to make a move on the girls. like, compared to his love triangle with liz and peter where i feel he was pretty resistant to letting her go - especially to someone like puny parker, he responds to peter’s accusations re: gwen and mj with ‘hey, relax. it’s not like that. i wouldn’t do that to you.’ i take it as him growing up and not feeling the need to overcompensate to impress his dad and also maybe the fact that he’s a bit more aware of how closeted he is. but it’s weirdly different with harry (*cough* cause it’s the first dude aside from peter he had any romantic interaction with *cough*) so he just……..dances around those feelings (on top of both of their feelings for peter) until harry starts dating liz (BECAUSE EVERYONE DATES EVERYONE IN PETER’S CIRCLE OF PALS, I GUESS) and he’s just like ‘???????????? well okay then’.

i like his dynamic with felicia as much it also pains me - that felicia went into it thinking she could use flash to hurt peter (’i’ll break your heart like he broke mine!’) but then ended up legitimately falling for him and started hoping for a normal life with him. also that they liked hanging out in terrible workout clothes. nerds. (alas, it didn’t last bc….FLASH, BUD….BUDDY….I CAN’T BELIEVE MARVEL HAD FLASH SAY THAT AND THEN PROBABLY SAT BACK AND THOUGHT ‘YUP PETE’S BEST BUD FLASH IS TOTALLY STR8′) and i need to read more of him and betty to get a handle of that but. what i’ve gotten from the panels i’ve seen that it’s very dependant on the writer and has the same problem flash’s relationships with liz, gwen, mj and felicia had where there’s a lot of love there but the actual romantic element is….lacking? falls short? fizzles out? where he seeks out a connection to peter(/spidey) through his romantic relationship with a woman peter used to be involved with and pushes said woman away when she starts getting in too deep?

anyway, that just turned into an essay about how flash thompson has been gay since his conception and only like, 20% (maybe less) of writers in charge of writing him have actually realized it.

PTs and the Goroboyo, headcanons:

he and ann share a love of sweet goods, so naturally ann and goro take eachother to their favourite dessert places, and share their recommendations. they’ll get one of those massive sharing platters between them and sit for hours just chatting and dissecting the desserts (all for the food blog, yeah sure thing). also, they’ll bitch about media sources a lot, because ann’s in the model industry and goro a celebrity detective, so they share a hatred for demanding directors and pushy media-focused adults

of all the thieves, it takes ryuji the longest to really warm up to akechi, and with a bit of akira assistance, they start hanging out together. they’re both quite active, if in different ways, and so they start sharing exercise routines. ryuji refuses to do the early-morning cycling that akechi does, but is more than happy to try out rock-climbing. they always race to the top, and everytime akechi beats him- ryuji isn’t impressed and starts training to beat him, in secret. after that, ryuji will drag akechi to the beef bowl place or some other place for food. he really helps akechi to be that bit more impulsive, and less composed

it’s yusuke who introduces akechi to his artwork. akechi was absent-mindedly commenting on the beauty of the true sayuri one night in leblanc, and yusuke latched to it immediately. they talked for hours as akira smiled and refilled their coffee, akechi being educated on some of the intricacies of art. akechi finds he quite likes visiting art museums, and entertaining himself with the mystery of the stories behind various paintings- and yusuke is the first to indulge in his wonderings and theories about the artists

makoto and akechi may as well be siblings, i’ll just throw it out there. they share interests and some values, but at times their competitiveness can drive the other thieves crazy, but there’s no stopping them from it. makoto did mention in the game they had a rivalry of sorts, but to stretch that canon, their competitiveness can range from investigation work, to video games, or even grades in school, with the occasional taunting comment thrown in between. but, when they work together, they’re quite the force to be reckoned with. they’ll study together often enough, or solve complex puzzles in sae’s living room while she prepares dinner (Sae’s got two younger siblings now and i can’t be convinced otherwise), working into the early hours- it drives Sae crazy

futaba is an absolute memelord, and akechi quite frankly never understands half her pop culture references in the groupchat (because that is definitely a thing) and futaba becomes determined to introduce him to modern culture. they binge-watch everything from the disney classics to comic films, sometimes accompanied by akira, and akechi is caught up on all the things he’s missed from his childhood or from his inability to look into it himself due to having a busy schedule. he’s learning the art of the meme, which isn’t helped by the endless shitposting in the groupchat from half the pt, but he understands it more than yusuke, which is something

hanging out with haru is always a peaceful reprieve from his busy schedule for akechi. they’ll spend a good part of the day gardening or haru will let goro sample some of the sweet desserts she hopes to one day serve in her cafe, she claims it’s nice to get some feedback from someone with a food blog. akechi says once she gets her cafe set up, he’ll be the first to make a review

morgana was a bit wary of akechi too in the start, best the two get in the beginning is sitting next to eachother in leblanc at night, as akira practices his coffee skills. but eventually, morgana starts to notice the all-too familiar dark circles under akechi’s eyes, and yells at both him and akira to go to bed- there’s no escape for akechi now. he has a permanent sleep monitor. from there, the two share nice conversations in leblanc, and they both get really excited at the prospect of going out for sushi. as it happens, akechi isn’t the biggest fan of fatty tuna, so he’ll share it with morgana

oh is one bulletpoint even enough for akira? ah well, let’s do this. akira is goro’s main supporter through it all, and most nights in leblanc are spent with them both sat together over cups of coffee, talking late into the night. sometimes it’s absolutely mindless chatter from two dorky teenage boys, othertimes it’s deep philosophical conversations they share opinions over until morgana demands they go to bed. also, as is the same with all his friends, akira keeps a close eye on akechi and his health. if the detective’s eyes are too droopy, akira encourages him to take a nap. if he hasn’t eaten all day, akira will prepare curry or take him out for something. akechi gets invited to pt study times, and slowly akira helps him become more sociable and integrate with the other thieves, he’s the cause of akechi starting to have those hang out times with the other thieves- helping him form bonds with people his own age, to let loose and have fun, learn that not everything is about pleasing adults and being a perfect detective for the public. akira saves him, in more ways than one

wow that ending got a little sappy, but ah well! there be my main headcanons for goro and the phantom thieves. honestly it’d be really interesting to see akechi hang out with the thieves more….oh atlus, so much wasted potential

Ann wouldn’t deny that she missed Ren during those few days they were too busy to hang out with the Thieves. So, when Ren asked the Thieves to meet up, Ann jumped at the opportunity. And she wasn’t the only one, as the rest agreed to meet up as well.

(She wanted to be surprised over Goro being one of the first to agree to the meeting, but she honestly wasn’t. She wasn’t even surprised about Futaba agreeing to it as well- Ren had been the one who smoothed over the Thieves’ contact with Futaba, after all.)

Ren asked them to meet up at a karaoke, citing privacy, which tipped Ann off to the fact that Ren wanted to discuss something serious with them.

“I’ve got the room rented for a few hours, so that we can talk as much as we want without being interrupted,” Ren said and gestured for them to sit.

When everyone settled down, Ren looked them all in the eye one by one, their expression not betraying anything despite the serious air they carried about them, “To be honest, there’s something I’ve been curious about for some time now. Given what happened with Madarame and Kaneshiro, and with you all being part of a group, the same group which includes Tantei-san as well, what do you all think of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts?”

Ann blinked in shock- that was one question she didn’t expect. Not from Ren, at least not after all this time.

“What we think of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts?” Yusuke parroted, “What exactly do you mean by that, Ren-san?”

“What I mean is, are you with them, against them? Do you have any reservations about them? What’s your opinion about their methodology and targets? What do you think they aim for?” Ren shrugged, “That kind of thing.”

“Of course we’re with them!” Ryuji, unsurprisingly, burst, “And reservations? What reservations? They target corrupt adults and work towards changing society!”

Ann smiled, a bit subdued, “I’m with them. After all, they helped us out with Kamoshida.”

“Indeed.” Yusuke nodded, “They helped me see what Madarame was truly like; they have opened my eyes and saved me from further throwing myself deeper into an endless pit.”

Makoto frowned with a serious look in her eyes, “They stopped Kaneshiro. You know the story.”

“Yes, I do.” Ren nodded and looked at Futaba who looked them straight in the eye without saying anything, and Ren smiled lightly.

“Well then, Tantei-san, what do you think?”

Ann tensed, carefully observing Goro who looked contemplatively at Ren. Ann was… scared. It probably sounded ridiculous, but she was scared. Despite Makoto comforting her about it, it didn’t stop her from worrying more about it.

“What do I think, hm?” Goro cradled his chin in his hand, “You are asking me this question in my capacity as a detective who has prior experience in dealing with phantom thieves.”

Ren nodded and Ann curled her hands to fists, her worry increasing by the minute. Goro hummed thoughtfully before continuing, “They have their own moral compass and image of justice that they follow, without necessarily adhering to the law.”

“And that doesn’t bother you? What does that mean when it comes to whether or not the Thieves are truly just?”

“What defines the parameters of justice in the first place? The word of the law or its spirit? Or neither of those? Is it an instated government body comprised of humans or the population, also comprised of humans? Humans aren’t infallible; they get corrupted- by money, power, fame. Who gets to decide what counts as true justice and what doesn’t? And I don’t need to go into the topic of who could have the moral high ground because that’s an argument that will never see an end, regardless of how the method employed by the Phantom Thieves works.”

Ann’s grip grew lax and she saw Makoto carefully eye Goro with relief.

Ren clapped, “You know, this is why you’re my favorite detective. But now, let me move on to the main reason I broached this topic with you all today- you all heard about the rising fame of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts? It’s growing quite considerably.”

“Yeah!” Ryuji seemed to regain his steam now that the topic came back to welcome territories.

“You know that’s not necessarily a good thing,” Ren added, observing the Thieves as they let out various exclamations of shock; Goro remained quiet, lips pressed into a thin line.

“How could it NOT be a good thing?” Ryuji asked, scowling, “They’re getting more known, they’re getting recognized, aren’t they?”

“They are,” Ren conceded, “But listen to me.” Ren’s expression grew somber, “From someone who follows the career of a phantom thief to another, gaining popularity and recognition, gaining fame, is a double edged sword.”

Makoto let out a soft ‘oh’.

“Usually, when it comes to your typical phantom thieves, it’s an open and shut case- they steal, regardless of their motives and what they do with their loot afterwards, it’s the showmanship, the entertainment the public receives during a thief’s heists is what leads to the romanticizing of the exploits of the aforementioned thief. It’s easy to predict.

“But the Phantom Thieves of Hearts are different. There’s no entertainment, no extravagant heists, no clear theft targets. They steal the metaphorical ‘hearts’ of people, make them change their view of the world, drastically.” Ren made sure to look at them all as they spoke, “That’s a power they hold, and the public knows it, the public believes it. The Phantom Thieves have a site where the public can approach them to ask them to change the heart of someone.” Ren twirled a curl of their hair around their finger as they grew silent for a moment before they resumed talking, “I hope you can consider the implications of that. Furthermore, whenever phantom thieves reach such level of fame, they are faced with more hurdles, and maintaining their goals and M.O.s alongside handling outside interferences becomes a balancing act.

“Long story short, with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts rising in popularity to such levels, I don’t want you all to feel shocked or blindsided if something happens and the Thieves, ah, ‘fall from grace’.” Ren stood up and headed to the door of the room, “Please remember that the public is fickle, I want you to be careful with it. Fame isn’t everything.” Ren then took a deep breath and sent them a fond smile, “Like I said before, the room has been booked for a couple more hours, have fun!” With a wave, Ren exited the room.

“What?!” Ryuji looked ready to wrench open the door and go chasing after Ren, “What was that all about?!”

“That was actually a good piece of advice.” Morgana chose that moment to worm his way out of Makoto’s bag.

“True.” Makoto nodded, “I think we needed to hear that. What do you think, Goro?”

“I agree.” Unlike the rest of the Thieves, Goro didn’t seem to have been particularly unsettled by what Ren just said, “I’ve investigated a few phantom thieves and did my research on many others during my work as a detective, and I can attest to what Ren just said. We’re going to have to be careful about our targets from now on. Especially with the knowledge of there being someone else using the Metaverse to cause mental shutdowns.” Goro blinked, “Speaking of which, Sis is working on that case, maybe I could check and see if I can get some information from her.”

“That sounds like a good idea, but how are you going to do it?” Makoto bit her lip, “With how Sis is serious about her work, I doubt she’d let you know about the important details if it’s not your case.”

Goro cocked his head to the side, “Her laptop probably has data or evidence that may be useful. If I could somehow dig into it and get the data on it…”

Futaba chuckled as she reached into a pocket and produced a storage device, “Well, if you’re looking for something to extract data…”

Goro looked at her curiously, “Oh?”

Futaba pushed the device into his hand, “Stick it into the laptop and it’ll do all the work.” She grinned deviously.

Goro chuckled, “Are you ready, Mako? We’re going to steal data from dear Sis.”

Makoto looked both amused and resigned, “Let’s get it over and done with.”

“And voila.” Goro handed the device over to Futaba, who immediately got to work.

“This is a lot of data,” Futaba hummed, “It will certainly take a lot of time to go through this. It will definitely be ready by the time you’re back from Hawaii.”

“Speaking of the trip to Hawaii,” Makoto started, “Goro and I will be joining you.”

“Huh?” Ann raised her head to look at Makoto inquisitively.

“But you’re not in our year,” Ryuji said.

“True,” Makoto said, “But due to what’s currently happening at school, the teachers need help from some of the third years to act as chaperones.”

“Chaperone? Goro?” Ryuji scoffed, “You want Goro to chaperone the trip Akira is going on to Hawaii?”

Ann didn’t bother muffling her giggles, “He’ll end up ogling Akira throughout the whole trip.”

“Heh, Goro is the one who needs to be chaperoned there.”

“Excuse you,” Goro hissed, “I take my work seriously. And if I’m put on chaperoning duty, then I’ll definitely be chaperoning.” Goro’s mouth stretched into a sickeningly sweet smile.

Ryuji was not fazed, “Uh-huh. We’ll be going to Hawaii, which means beach, which means Akira in a swimsuit. Which means Akira’s Legs. You don’t get to see them often, do you?”

“I fail to see how that is related,” Goro said, frowning, though his cheeks were reddening.

“I thought you’d die if you ever went with him to the beach,” Ann mused, “But I was wrong and I understand that. But I do think you’d definitely die if you’ve ever been with him to the hot baths.”

Goro stared blankly at one of the walls, face completely red; Anna and Ryuji high-fived.

Spending time in Hawaii wasn’t that much different from spending time in Japan; a fact Ryuji never failed to articulate with various levels of disgruntlement.

The first night they spent there didn’t start off favorably for Ann; her roommate went to spend time with her boyfriend, taking the keys with her, which got Ann accidentally locked out of the room. She sighed and trudged off, deciding to go to Akira’s room to see if she can stay there for a bit.

After she reached the room, she saw that Ryuji was there as well.

“Is something wrong?” Akira asked, blinking lazily from where he leaned against the window while Ryuji looked at her from his seat on one of the beds and Mishima stared in curiosity.

Ann sighed and explained the situation.

“I think I’ll be staying here for the night,” Ann mused.

“But.” Mishima worried his lower lip, “There are only two beds, and if one takes the couch, there will still be someone stuck sleeping on the floor.”

“We could play cards,” Ryuji said, pointing to the deck of cards sitting on a table in the corner, “And the loser will get the floor.”

Mishima looked more worried while Ann grinned widely, Akira didn’t even react, merely maintaining his curious expression.

Ann had no doubts Ryuji would lose.

And she was correct.

(The game of cards was brutal, friendships were almost torn, blackmail was aired about, faith in humanity was forever lost, unholy revenge schemes were hatched, and a lot of fun was had.)

Thankfully, the rest of the trip was a bit better.

Probably the only highlight was when she and Ryuji asked Akira about his girl type and he turned to them and responded with the most deadpan expression saying ‘my boyfriend better not hear about this’. Ryuji’s shocked expression was worthy of a picture.

(Ann had teased, “Does this boyfriend’s name start with a ‘G’ and end with ‘oro’?” And Akira had blinked at her in that way that told her he just had an idea only he would think brilliant; Ann suspected it had to do with the golden A-letter keychain Goro mysteriously acquired the next day.)

But maybe she shouldn’t have taken the trip so lightly.

The moment they got back to Japan, things seemed to just go downhill.

Goro was accosted almost immediately after their return to partake in an interview about the Phantom Thieves of Hearts now that the media remembered that Japan did, indeed, have a young genius detective who’d been dealing with phantom thieves for a couple of years now, and whom they could ask for opinions.

And he was young and handsome enough to warrant enough attention from the masses.

Now, the Phantom Thieves had no problem with their leader getting the praise he deserved for the efforts he put forth, but the timing was horrible; the Thieves were in a tight spot with the public clamoring for them to steal the heart of the CEO of Okumura Foods, and with tensions running high among the Thieves themselves as Ryuji’s and Morgana’s regular fights escalated in heat until Morgana left, they needed their leader with them.

Except Goro wasn’t present for any of it.

Ann looked worriedly at Makoto, who was clenching her fist hard enough her fingernails were digging into her palm.

“Makoto…?”

Makoto sighed, her grip relaxing, “I need to tell Goro about this development.” Makoto took out her phone and started texting Goro.

A few moments later, Ann’s phone buzzed with incoming messages- it was the Thieves’ groupchat.

Goro: I have heard about what just happened.

Goro: We’ll meet up tomorrow in Akira’s room, he has agreed to lend it to us for the duration of our meeting.

Goro: We are due an important talk together.

Ann bit her lip and looked at Makoto with apprehension.

Makoto pocketed her phone and looked back at Ann with a grim expression.

Lemme preface this with a big hello there! I didn’t actually expect anyone to reply to this post, and so comprehensively either, haha!

Hrrrrrmm. Can’t say I agree with all of this. It’s not like ‘being foil to the protag’ is the flaw with the interaction - or characterisation, of all things - it’s mostly the way said interaction is framed. Also, he’s less of a direct foil to him and more an 'equal and opposite’. Goro isn’t supposed to relate to the protag entirely, that’s kind of the point. He envies him. But he’s on his level, so to speak. It’s that aspect that draws him to him.

I think we’re using foil in a two different ways here. I use it as shorthand for “we, as third parties to this story, are supposed to compare and contrast these characters”. So, yeah, he’s set up as an equal and opposite you are totally correct there, but Goro aint the one relating to the protag, we as the audience are the ones comparing them. And that’s when problems arise, because quite a bit about the protag is so open to interpretation.

He also kind of KNOWS he’s special because he’s.. seen him, and Morgana, in the Metaverse (see: pancakes ‘gaffe’). It’s not just a one-sided perception, he’s absolutely right and this is a big fuck-off hint that he’s a wildcard in hindsight.

I agree that this should have been dealt with better, and that we needed more interaction with the PT to build a collective bond. A WHOLE, WHOLE lot more. I live and breathe any writings that bring them all together, like really. But to narrow the issue down to the protag being foil just seems flimsy. They ARE fated rivals per se and for good reason, it’s just that this aspect was shafted to buggery when it got down to it.

It’s not protag being foil that’s the problem, it’s “protag is the foil, focused on almost exclusively to the detriment of any meaningful interaction with the rest of the cast.” like, yeah, it does work, to a point. but it also could be a lot better, by giving the others a chance to shine.

The ‘god’s game’ apparently meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. That was exceptionally bad writing. To build up shit like that, but for Goro’s role as wild card to mean next to zilch.

Oh yeah, that resolution was very much so missing, which is a massive pity. Like you said, the whole fated rivals chosen to duke it out by god is a pretty interesting concept. I’m interested to know more about why you think that Goro’s role as a Wild Card mean zilch, though. Personally, I’ve been looking at it as: “Goro did had the potential to choose many different paths that could shape the world around him, signified by the Wild Card, but he locked himself very quickly into one path where he was simply being used as a tool by Shido. This, in combination with him holding everyone at arms length, meant that he didn’t form any significant bonds either aside from the real fucked up one with Shido, and so he inadvertently crippled his own Wild Card ability from the beginning” Actually, on that note, maybe he couldn’t have formed confidants. Whenever you initiate a Confidant in-game, it’s Lavenza’s voice that you hear, not Caroline + Justine. Would Lavenza have reached out to Akechi? Hmmm...

Also regarding Goro and fame, he’s not as hung up on it as Ryuji is/was, not NEARLY as much. One, mistranslation (not ‘public image’ or 'celebrity’, but 'reputation with adults’ and 'charisma’), and two, he knows his fame is fickle and dangerous in itself, having lived it for long enough. Ryuji romanticises it, Goro does not. Goro resents that those people do not know him for who he is, Ryuji thinks that fame will make him beloved.

Yeah!!!! This right here!!! This is a great contrast to have, they’d be amazing foils!! Ryuji and Goro are practically complete opposites, but they also share a lot of similarities too despite that. I spent like 5 min on this section the first time, so these are just the things that instantly popped into my head, but you could also draw parallels btwn the fact that Ryuji’s dad being in his life made it worse, while Goro’s being absent made his worse, or they way that Ryuji always had his mother with him vs Goro who’s mother left him alone, or the way that Ryuji is very bluntly honest about everything vs Goro who tries to keep everything hidden behind a veneer of politeness, or public perception of ryuji as a no good thug even if he honestly just wants to do the right thing vs the perception of goro as the person who would uphold justice/stop the breakdowns even if he was the very same person who was causing them, but DESPITE ALL THIS CONTRAST, ryuji is one of the most empathetic members of the team and absolutely would have tried to help Goro if he’d only known sooner what kinda trouble he was in (re: first impressions of makoto as a prick vs jumping in front of a car in order to rescue her)

(Speaking of Makoto, she’s absolutely the person that has the most parallels to Goro, and she should have been his rival. Both joined the team through some form of blackmail, both have incredible pressure but on them by the adults in their lives, both very similar characters vis-à-vis approaches to life in general, actually wait one second i have a quote from a friend on this.... “But I think Makoto works really well in terms of how they’re narratively set up as opposites? idk, like Makoto’s approach to subterfuge is to orchestrate the people around her while Akechi’s approach to subterfuge is to manipulate the people around him, Makoto’s impulsivity means she can be prone to direct confrontation while Akechi is on guard until he’s literally right at the breaking point, I just think���. it would’ve been so much more interesting to explore more of this than putting the burden on protag to carry Akechi Interest”)

As for Yusuke? Madarame’s exploiting of his talent to his own ends (check), Yusuke wanting to please him but also trapped and nigh desperate to leave (check), Madarame being essentially responsible for his mother’s death (check), Yusuke having to rely on him to survive, for roof over head (check), and would be ruined, and even die one way or another if he tried to escape (check, check, and double check).                                                                      A comment Yusuke makes in Okumura’s Palace is extremely telling- about how someone who is oppressed will ‘desire for it’ (paraphrase). What’s even more telling, is when Yusuke said about Goro, quote: 'had I not met you all, I would have turned out like him as well’.   Haru? They’re both puppets to their fathers. Both are manipulated for the sake of political goals. Both are actually sweet by nature- at least, not ruthless, and really have to be pushed to be (SIU Director’s comments about the plot to FRAME the PTs as being ‘too brutal’… imagine how much more actually KILLING would be..). And both started out with a naive(ish), idealistic core, if Robin Hood and his fixation on Featherman R is anything to go by.

Eyyyyyyyyy this is some pretty hella meta, kudos to you. Like yeah!!!! YEAH!!!!!!! GORO AND PHANTOM THIEVES INTERACTIONS.... THERES THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME REAL MEATY, REAL GOOD STUFF IN HERE....GIVE US MORE OF THAT PLEASE...

And part of the reason why opinion changed per se, was realising just how flimsy Goro’s own resolve was, and how vulnerable. He wasn’t hell bent on bringing disaster, he was clinging on to straws in desperation. Ryuji’s comment, urging him to realise that he was his own person, makes this much clear. Their ire was more focused on Shido at this point. Still, they did not really forgive Goro, and made this much VERY clear. In any event, the last point might have been down to cultural differences. I’m.. not sure, but to those who understood this scene, it didn’t come ‘out of nowhere’, so you can’t necessarily say that’s a writing flaw on it’s own.    

Mmmm, sorry if I was unclear, but the two times I used ‘out of nowhere in this post were in regards to how i dislike goro approaching protag with little prior warning? So.... im not quite sure what you’re trying to say here. Out of nowhere is too strong of a term to use for this scenario, so if its a thing I’ve said someplace else in regards to the last scene then sorry, I’ll clarify now. It’s not out of nowhere, however, it stands in stark contrast to the entire team’s opinions of Akechi up until this point. Not necessarily a terrible, awful choice, but it is certainly jarring in a way that is completely avoidable. Which, again, brings me back to “give Goro and the other PT a larger share of attention instead of focusing on Protag”. Sae’s Palace would have been a perfect place for Goro’s facade to slip a little bit, and give the rest of the team a little bit of an idea of how he’s like when he’s not constantly on guard. Instead, Sae’s Palace focuses on setting Goro up as smart which............. he’s a teen detective that works with the police. We know that he’s smart already. We should have gotten more characterization in there instead! Giving us some form of transition, like, “he’s an enemy of the Phantom Thieves” -> “hmm, there seem to be some circumstances that we can relate to that made him the way he is now” -> “we understand why you did the things you did. we still can’t agree with it, but we know now.” ...Granted, the reason that I think of it as an abrupt about face could have been due to the face that they never mention Goro again after his battle. A short scene after Shido’s Palace had been cleared to look back on the impact that Goro had had on the PT would have been a great help.

–Shu would definitely be an avid listener. He likes to ask about how your day was when you get home anyway, so he’s already there waiting. Hearing how cruddy it was would give him this empathetic smile, and he would put his big hand on top of your head as he listened.–He would tell you how proud he was of you for taking all the horrible patrons in stride. He’d say things like “That’s my girl,” and “You did well.” And he’d shamelessly let you pout, because it means he gets to hold you~

Soifon/Sui-Feng

–Since she believes that struggles build character, she wouldn’t be too concerned with your day. She’d listen, give you some advice, and expect you to move on with your life.–If you were really upset about it, I honestly feel like she’d probably loan you one of her prized black cat plushies. They make her feel better, why not you?

Rojuro “Rose” Otoribashi

–Always one for theatrics, he’d likely give you a heartwarming speech about perseverance. –If anyone were to blow it out of proportion, at least on a small scale, I have a feeling it would be Shinji. Kensei Muguruma

–Kensei, in his efforts to cheer you up (or calm you down, again, depending on if you were angry or not), would come off more like a drill sergeant. We all know he isn’t uncaring, however his angry demeanor is nearly impossible to break through. BUT, he’s also a tsundere.–Bearing that in mind, when he realizes that what you really want is for him to hear you out, and maybe hug and kiss on you a bit, but complies…with a hilarious red tint to his cheeks.

Toshiro Hitsugaya

–Toshiro would definitely tell you not to dwell on it, but he would listen. While he generally finds complaining irritating, his s/o is special. Seeing you unhappy brings him no pleasure.–However, if you mention anything like maybe there was a gross guy hitting on you, the air will drop a few noticeable degrees…

Kenpachi Zaraki

–Let’s get one thing straight, does he or does he not tend to solve things with violence? –This little bean, let me tell you, rivals Shunsui with how great he is at consoling you, or calming you down. He will make you tea, and give you sweets, and just generally be there for you.–He would also give some similar advice as Unohana, saying that everyone has their own battle to fight, and that it’s no reflection on you. “Cheer up, my dear.” Also, sweet forehead smooches~

Ichigo Kurosaki

–This boy would just pull you into his arms, regardless of your mood, and listen while you bitched. He’s quiet, but shows he’s listening by nodding his head, and he’d tell you not to worry about it.–When you’ve calmed down: “You feel better? Yeah? Good, let’s get something to eat.” Food doesn’t solve everything, but it definitely helps when you’ve had a bad day.

(I am unsure whether you know Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy... and/or the TV series based on it... and, more specifically, the idea of daemons that inspired this AU - which is, by the way, still part of the NaNo, because why not - but. Byakko is Hibiki’s daemon, which means touching Byakko is basically like touching a part of Hibiki’s soul, and it’s very, very intimate, and I started that story with this scene in mind. tho... not QUITE this scene, but... yes.)

I don’t even know what works for me. Sometimes I’ll write a story in a week (and by that I mean 5k+ oneshots), sometimes I’ll write it in a day (usually short stories, 2k words tops), sometimes in a month... sometimes I’ll take years to write just a couple chapters. Sometimes prompts work well to help me write, sometimes they just make me frustrated. It... honestly depends on how I am at the moment, I think.

Oh, my reactions to just about everything “problematic” is usually wondering why that is so problematic. Especially everything LGBTQIA+ related. Like. the moment I read about, I usually just sit there staring at nothing and thinking: “ok, sounds good, but why is it... such a big deal? does it need explanations...? labels...? can’t someone just be that and everyone else respect that...?” Anyway.

That’s absolutely valid, too. I just wish people could accept things without pressuring others to their expectations. I have a friend who’s ace but not aro, and she had to break up with more than one person because they just wouldn’t understand that. Which is bullshit and extremely cruel, in my opinion. And disgusting.

Aww. I didn’t know about the “only specials” this year. I knew it was gonna be shorter than an usual run, because it wouldn’t be able to be a whole 10 episodes season, but... I don’t know. I guess things hadn’t quite clicked yet. Anyway, I’ll be sad to see Jodie go. She’s such an incredible Doctor! :(

Mm... besides Kanji, I like Nanako’s. I like the “adopted younger sister” thing. Dojima’s is... a bit... weird. but, I like Nanako’s, it’s just. sweet. Yosuke’s is cool, too, and I really would’ve liked if Teddie had a proper SLink (like how they gave Goro in Royal; that’d been cool), because he’s a sweetheart, too (despite... you know... his everything related to girls...), but the girls. Shit, the girls. I don’t... ugh. no.

Honestly, for the girls, I think Persona 5 is the one with the best SLinks. Sure, some of them are... very... ah, weird, let’s say, but... many of them are cool, too? I never thought I’d like Ann, but I do like her and her SLink. And, of course, I love Futaba’s. And the others are more or less ok, most of them.

(Makoto’s, though... just... no.)

But, yeah. I’d love if they learned to write better SLinks for the girls, wow... (I’d also love if they pulled another P3P and allowed us to play girls again, because I like playing girls, thanks)

And. the story. it’s so. In parts: it’s so sad and tragic and beautiful. It’s also one of the times I wanted to kill Bahamut the most, so, cheers!

But also. I spent half of it wondering how Noctis looked, since he had aged 10 years, in the game, and here he had been in the Crystal for 100, and I just couldn’t shake that question from my head, yay.

But, honestly, Ardyn just. having to wait. 100 years. for Noctis. fuck.

(and Noctis saying that Ardyn would let Bahamut win... darling, by this point, Ardyn wanted Bahamut to win. He’d wanted that for a long while, by then... because it also meant he would finally be done. Ok so like…..it’s not that I hate thesecharacters (hopefully I won’t, but I can’t fully say till the english version),but…..I actually just don’t care about them…. I’m very, VERY apathetic tothem. But I should note that out of all my least favs Yusuke and Futabalook like they could possibly go up when the english version is released (stillwill be ranked under Haru but better than where they are now). I feel like someof these might be because of the fandom or because I really am not happy withhow the game is paced/how it flows….. Also it took so long cause I had torewrite Makoto’s and Goro’s cause it go too heated and negative (probably cause I’ve been bottling this up for months) sooooolkdasnfafnlak;ndfk;a I’mm keep it short and simple

Yusuke: I dunno…..maybe itwas when he was first announced people compared him to Jun. I dunno if it’scause I don’t like Jun or that I don’t like how it felt like they weren’tletting him stand by himself as his own character…. So maybe it’s that Idon’t like his design? (I really do think they should’ve went with thebrowner-haired and long haired version we see in his concept art.) Maybe it’scause I didn’t trust him? Judging by the concept art (when it was more roughsof him) he seemed a bit shady…..maybe he was originally going to be thetraitor? Maybe it’s just that I don’t like how the fandom views him… Maybeit’s all these things…I can admit I didn’t like him when he was firstannounced. When I got the game tho? I did like his arc, not as much as thefirst arc (no really that arc really leaves an impression) but it was a goodfollow up and is like maybe my 2nd fav in the game (and cause of hisarc I feel like I do have the potential to like him more). And then…I dunnowhat happened…it’s like he dropped off the face of the earth! When they weretalking in-game during the plot related things after the 2nd dungeonI would catch myself thinking “Oh yeah he exists! I forgot!” I legitforgot this kid existed. I don’t really recall him doing anything worthwhileeither (maybe what he contributed in the discussions was big? I dunno, it feltlike everyone else was talking a lot and contributing and not him as much? thisis something that the english ver will clear up for me tho so my opinion willprobably change, this isn’t a reason why I don’t like him…I just….didn’tnotice).  I know what you’re thinking “Well what about his CoOp? How couldyou forget he existed if he had a CoOp!” Well……I… didn’t…..do it….. 8UCause he wasn’t a character I cared about still, and I was focusing on eithermy stats or CoOps that I deemed more important (like best in-game benefits andwho I actually liked) or could do. So yeah…..Though, all this being said, Ireally do like his interactions with Futaba tho, maybe it’s cause he’s probablythe closest in age to her,or maybe it’s cause they’re both odd. I kinda ship them. 8U He’s really theonly one I do ship her with. >.>  This is a good segue into…

Futaba: I dunno, she alsorubbed me the wrong way when she was first announced (actually her and Haru andMakoto all did….). I dunno she was very “waifu bait-y” when I first sawher. And…..now…..she still kinda does, but more on the “littlesister-siscon kinda bait.” She really does feel like a little sister toeveryone except Yusuke and Makoto (Makoto is more like her mom tbh). And so herromance really……feels almost like I’m romancing Nanako tbh, and the factyou can view how she falls for you asa way of “tricking her” (not my words, just repeating what I heard someoneelse say), so that doesn’t really sit right with me either….And the fact thatshe’s been listening in on you for months…..is……yeah…… I think weshould’ve had a CoOp  with her at thestart of the game that was similar to the Hermit in P3 (it hits a roadblock atsome point of course and opens up again after plot stuff happens), we insteadare her online friend and she gets close to use that way. Maybe she does hackto find out location but she doesn’t….you know….bug our place. I dunno someof the things just doesn’t sit right with me. But her backstory does seeminteresting, so that might have me like her in the englishversion….. “So did you do her CoOp?” Didn’t do anything past rank 1 tbh(ok maybe rank 2 or 3, I had some free time before the game ended)…. Statusreasons was the main reason, but again….like Yusuke….didn’t really care(tho I got farther in Yusuke’s CoOp I think).

Makoto: Let’s be honest, shedoesn’t even need to be here. She’s only here cause of her sister Sae, and tbhI’d rather have Sae be on the team. We know the MC was originally going to livewith or next to Sae in the early versions, I bet Makoto wasn’t even conceived backthen. It’s only when they moved the MC they decided that Makoto might beneeded, and even then they could’ve gotten around her and still go stuff done.Nothing Makoto does is that important that another character could’ve done. “Butshe found Haru! That’s what the wiki says” (might have changed) No…..She didn’t,Anne found Haru in the book. Makoto just accompanied the MC to confront Haru….whichyou didn’t really need anyone could’ve done that. “Oh but she’s the strategist ofthe group!”  So? Tbh why is she the strategist?What gives her the authority to be that? Cause she’s smart? Guess who else issmart? Hifumi. And guess what, she’s more of a strategist than Makoto. The gameshe’s a pro at is more is grounded in strategy. And guess what, she wasoriginally going to be on the team too. It would’ve made more sense to haveHifumi on the team than Makoto.

Tldr; She’s unnecessary/doesn’tneed to be there, her role could be removed completely or just filled by anyoneelse. 

Goro: Sigh…..short andsweet….short and sweet. I don’t care about him and his struggles. 1)  we don’t see it, it’s only alluded too (P5’sshow don’t just tell thing was so strong with the first two dungeons and Futaba’swas decent too, and Haru’s problems with her fiancé was shown and you felt forher too despite her being thrown in last second). They already did this withSho and Adachi (Adachi was kinda lost in translation, and Sho was just not toldtoo well but still they’re retreading). Like I have to rely on what I saw withthe other kids to feel for Goro instead of Goro himself. And speaking of that2) he has more in common with other characters than the MC (like Yusuke, and/orAnne/Ryuji)…..which really sucks considering he’s supposed to be the duality tothe MC (like Adachi-MC, Sho to Adachi/MC, Ryoji to MC, Takaya to MC ect), yesit’s not uncommon for other teammates to have duality with the antagonist(Adachi-Yosuke/Naoto, heck the Adachi-Yosuke really parallels Goro-Yusuke)….but…..whatabout MC-Goro????? They really don’t have much in compare and contrast going onimo. 3) He doesn’t even feel like one who fulfills a detective role in aPhantom Thief thing (ex Batman to Catwoman, Carmalita Fox to Sly Cooper, ToshioUtsumi to Hitomi and her sisters, Ganimard/Zenigata toLupin/Lupin the 3rd, etc you get the point), if anything Sae is the one who fulfillsthat role more (bonus points she’s pretty much Naoto in this game, who alsofulfills this role). 4) I never felt like the team felt connected to him….likethey knew he was a snitch and they never really treated him well imo, so himbeing like “I’ll help you out and sacrifice myself” doesn’t really make a wholelot of sense. I mean if he had been on your team longer that would’ve made alittle more sense, but they didn’t like him before or after joining the teamtbh…. So why should I feel connected when the rest of the team doesn’t reallyeither (heck the fact you can be so freaking mean to him as the MC AND STILLrank up really doesn’t make sense). :/

Tldr; He’s not reallywell written compared to everyone else (as well as other past antagonists), and he doesn’t make sense.
