i can’t stop thinking about the dnd bit in chris grace: as scarlett johansson, both the planetouched tiefling beat itself and brennan’s meta part at the end, and how there’s so much depth to that, the experience of making a fantasy character and wanting them to reflect yourself in a world where your people and culture do not actually exist—most of my characters look like me, they have wide noses and brown skin and marks on their faces. why do i need to do that? its a fucking fantasy roleplay game i can make any character who looks like whatever with different features realistic and fantastical i can be an elf with pink eyes or a tiefling with purple skin or a fucking cat person covered in fur but. i don’t.

it’s about that tokenization, and of trying to prove to myself that i’m asian enough. because if i let that slide what does it say about its importance? because my tables are often pretty white. because the default setting is medieval europe. because white characters are often treated as a default in fantasy. because if i don’t look like me, who else will? there’s something that feels SOOOO uneasy inside me as brennan calls out to chris : « you can be chinese-coded ! you can be chinese-coded ! »
