this fandom is annoying me so i'm going to say this once and then fuck off back to my shows.
on the topic of eddie's parents: helena has always treated eddie like he is an unfit parent. both of his parents have, but helena especially has led that charge. yes, his parents love him. i do not doubt that. but i said some weeks ago that i think helena/ramon would have been much happier raising eddie and chris as siblings rather than letting eddie be a father, and i stand by that. throughout the narrative, they have indicated time and time again that they think his choices are wrong—from their unwillingness to accept shannon fully, to coming outright and saying they think eddie is on a downward spiral and that he's going to crash and burn and take christopher with him. this is not an "Evil Parents" buddie conspiracy theory, this is a canon fact.
at every opportunity, helena especially has been trying to pry christopher away from his father. this is also a canon fact. in 2x18, after shannon's funeral, she tried to get eddie to bring chris (and himself, but eddie was most definitely the afterthought in that conversation) back to texas. in 4x14, eddie says to buck that his parents will fight for custody. and while eddie's relationship with his father has changed since the early seasons, this is still very much so a recurring theme in their dynamic.
so it stands to reason that helena would feel gleeful, or satisfied, or maybe even triumphant over the fact that she's finally gotten what she wanted. again, this isn't a headcanon, this is just common sense. she's been wanting chris back in texas for years, and now she's finally gotten her wish. i mentioned earlier that eddie himself is an afterthought in the conversation of the diaz boys' return to texas, and this remains true. helena favors christopher over her own son. this is also a canon fact. in 8x1, she sees her son sitting on camera at the saddest looking birthday party anyone's ever seen, and her response is "oh well! better luck next time! bye!" she doesn't offer to call him back later. she doesn't even look sad that he's sad. she simply continues about her day like her child is not suffering.
now, i still firmly believe that helena diaz loves her son. but if she has empathy for her him and the struggles he's facing—and has faced—she has yet to express it. this is also, unfortunately, canon.
having said that.
christopher is a teenager. he is not a little boy anymore. it was cute when he took an uber to buck's house because his dad made him mad, but this is quite a different situation. we've talked ad nauseam about the kim/shannon of it all because the trauma and betrayal of that is significant. but there are layers here. because it's not just that christopher thought his mom was back from the dead, it's also that eddie did what he (in christopher's mind) does best—he messed up a good thing right as christopher was getting to enjoy it.
9-1-1 is designed so that we, the viewers, are able to empathize with eddie's struggles. we're adults so, on average, we know why he makes the choices he makes and we can, on some levels, relate to them. even if we don't agree, we can understand the logic behind these choices. but christopher does not have the luxury of adulthood. and, if you put yourself in his shoes, his entire life since coming to los angeles has been extraordinarily unstable. some of these things were obviously outside of eddie's control, such as the tsunami and his dad getting shot. but they still happened.
so now, he is this fourteen year old kid who has lived through trauma after trauma, all the while witnessing his dad try to put himself back together after a lifetime of pain. and one of those ways eddie tries to put himself back together is by dating again. first, he dates ana and, objectively, ana was the perfect choice. she was smart. she was beautiful. she was good with kids. she was latina, which his parents/dad would have approved of, and christopher liked her very much. but then, just as it's getting good and looking real, eddie breaks up with her. again, we, the viewers, know why he did what he did. he was having panic attacks at the mere thought of being with her. but if you're christopher it looks like dad is pulling the plug on a good thing for no reason.
same as when eddie leaves the 118. we, adults, know eddie is struggling. hell, even christopher knows eddie is struggling. but we can understand the depths of the layers here. christopher didn't/doesn't. all he knew/knows is that, not only did his dad leave behind his job/his family/his stability, he did all that and cited him as the reason for that decision. which is why christopher said, "i never asked you to [leave the 118]." so now we fast forward to the present and we have eddie and this thing with marisol. they go on family outings, she moves in, and all these things start to feel like permanence. they start to feel like eddie has finally maybe gotten himself on solid ground and can start to enjoy his life again, or maybe for the first time.
and then he goes and cheats on marisol. with christopher's dead mom.
so we can see the multiple layers of this situation.
eddie loves his son, christopher loves his dad, and eddie diaz is a good parent. i will stand by that to the day i die, and all of these things are overwhelmingly evident. but that doesn't change the fact that the most stable home christopher has ever known is the home he lived in with his grandparents. which is sad. it's really sad to say, because we know eddie has tried so hard for that boy in so many ways. as a single parent, raising his kid to the best of his ability was so much more a full-time job than he was prepared for. but he did it. he strapped in and did the work of two people and, in doing so, it became imperative that, above all else, he gave his son a safe place to land and didn't give him reasons not to trust him because, at the end of the day, eddie is the only parent christopher has.
but eddie's broken that trust. and now, he has to live with the consequences. but let's be clear, the consequences in question are christopher's absence. helena's satisfaction over having chris in texas is an enormous insult to painful injury that must be addressed by the narrative if they ever want me to like her or believe she has eddie's best interests at heart. but this situation, in typical 9-1-1 fashion, is one in which multiple things can be, and are, true at the same time.
but relative to the matter of christopher and what he's "allowed" to do? eddie's lucky his son is even taking his calls, and he knows that. so he's going to continue to do the work to earn that trust back because he's never done anything but put in 1000% for his son. and that is also a canon fact.
#okay now i'm finished#me writing a 500 word meta on 911 in This economy??? shocking#tv: 911#jack.txt#the diaz boys

This is my brain trying to make sense of the new Eddie/Shannon/Chris timeline
With Shannon’s birth year now canonically being 1992 I thought I’d throw together a rough timeline for her and Eddie’s relationship since it seems to be confusing some people. (Although it doesn’t really matter what year these characters were born and we shouldn’t put too much thought into this bc the show retcons backstories all the time)
It’s canon that Shannon was born Oct 1992 and that Buck was born June 1992 and so logically Eddie was probably born either Sept 1990/91/92 (Edit: Its canon everyone! Eddie is a 1992 baby!). I like thinking that he’s a little older than Buck and so I’m going to stick with Eddie being born 1991. I have edited this to reflect his canon age.
I'm going to break this down by year and bold the stuff that is confirmed canon the other stuff is was I could piece together to make it make sense.
And yes I know their ages might fluctuate depending on when birthdays fall I was just making it easier on myself.
2010:
August: Shannon and Eddie have known each other since they were 14. They start dating in their senior year of high school. Shannon finds out she's pregnant, her and Eddie get married, Eddie enlists in the army (Shannon: 18, Eddie: 18)
Basic training is about 10 weeks plus 16 weeks of medic training so Eddie is away at basic for 26 weeks total (Sept 2010 - Jan 2011)
2011:
Eddie finishes basic in Jan 2011 and goes on his first tour in Feb 2011
Tours are anywhere between 7 and 15 months - lets say Eddie's first tour was 9 months
Eddie gets leave from his tour to be there for Chris' birth but has to return soon after (Shannon: 19, Eddie: 19).
2011-2013:
Eddie is in the army on tours and periodically home
Eddie misses Chris' diagnosis
2013:
Eddie re-enlists without telling Shannon (Shannon: 21, Eddie: 21, Chris: 2)
From my research enlistments are usually 4 years in active duty and two years inactive. However, after you've completed active duty you can extend or re-enlist for another four of active duty. This would align with Eddie's timeline as 2010-2014 would be his first contract and he re-enlisted in 2013 to start his second contract as soon as his first is done.
2015:
Eddie's helicopter gets shot down and Eddie is discharged early from the army (Shannon: 23, Eddie: 23, Chris: 4)
Eddie is a Staff Sergeant at this point which is possible for his age just not common
Shannon leaves to take care of her dying mother
2017:
Helena and Ramon try to take Chris from Eddie
Eddie and Chris leave El Paso for LA
Eddie starts at the Fire Academy (Shannon: 25, Eddie: 25, Chris: 6)
2018:
Eddie joins the 118
Shannon returns and dies
(Shannon: 26, Eddie: 26, Chris: 7, Buck: 26)
Do with this as you will :)
#does it all line up with what is said on the show? no but i did the best i could with what weve been given lol#especially since in eddie begins they say chris is born in 2011 and then later in 2015 eddie says chris is 6 when hes actually 4#but yknow continuity#eddie/shannon/chris are very dear to me and so i wanted to piece them together more#I didn't go into detail about how shannon and eddie met and their relationship before she got pregnant because we really dont know anything#but i'm partial to them being high school sweethearts#i apologise if anything regarding the us military is incorrect im canadian and all my info came from research i did on google#eddie diaz#shannon diaz#christopher diaz#evan buckley#evan buck buckley#911 on fox#911 fox

Good morning Alice!! What's interesting about bringing up the Marjan, Eddie, Buck, and TK aspects, is that now we have Canon confirmation seasons later that Buddie do not wing man or talk to each other about significant others. And may I just say that is loud.
As shippers, we do have to infer a lot, but it's so easy with Buddie. This season offered lots of hints. Clearly, like at Chims birthday party, when they go out to bars, Buddie must have always stuck together. Buck was only picking up partners when Eddie wasn't out with him. He wasn't kissing and telling. He only knew the bare minimum of Shannon. In all these years, they never picked up women together, and Eddie wouldn't know if sometimes there was a guy or 2. I mean, Eddie could barely say or comprehend saying masturbating to Buck. Especially when you take in context, yes, they more then likely shared a bed during quarantine. Did they make a pillow wall??
And again maybe I'm reading into it but yes it is very loud. That is how writers treat potential partners. Even if one starts out with an active dating life, when it's established, there is a potential pairing, well, they usually start hiding it. You never want someone you admire to think poorly of you. So it's funny that they wrote these 2 hot single firefighters this way. Even down to Buck only spiraling with Lucy because of Eddie, not Taylor. Then the cherry on top Eddie witnessing part of it.
Ad always I hope you are feeling ok and that your new treatment is going well?? Stay safe!!
My darling! *hugs* Thank you for the ask!
"As shippers, we do have to infer a lot" TBH, I have not been inferring so much as I have had Buddie shoved into my face with a little of Eddie stripteasing, a dash of Buck being the one taking it in, and a whole lot of "Whatta Man" playing in the background. I have not been the same person since.
And yes, I agree with everything you said. They do NOT wing man for each other. They DO get jealous and snide when the other one is trying to bond with anyone else. They do NOT wanna hear about it. They WILL advise against it, even when they fail to follow their own advice. This has been shown so consistently, it can't be ignored and it is NOT the way two platonic best friends are with each other.
OMG, you had to remind me of the likely scenario of them sleeping together in the same bed during covid, which I am still not over. ABC better dig into that goldmine and give us some flashbacks of them pining away without even realizing they're pining away for each other in THE SAME FREAKING BED.
Thank you for the kind words! The treatment isn't fun and I'm feeling worse physically, but I'm doing my best to soldier on. Keep working, keep doing my best every day. But I am sleeping more than usual, and I guess that's my body's way of dealing with how low I'm feeling physically. Thank you again for caring! Sending you all the love! As always, my ask tag. xoxox

i was just gonna say......... hs dad!eddie? whose parents think theyd be better off raising Christopher? hs!buck already like I LOVE KIDS? hmmmm
I’m combining these two!
1. Eddie thinks he has the most spectacularly bad luck in the history of the universe; he has a girlfriend for two months, sleeps with her a handful of times, and gets her pregnant. In his junior year of high school. Shannon doesn’t tell him until she can’t hide it anymore, and by the time Christopher is born, her parents have already bought a house halfway across the country and are pushing them to give the baby up for adoption. Eddie wonders if he’s making the biggest mistake in the world, but it sits wrong with him to hand his child over to someone he doesn't know, so he sucks it up and tells his parents. A judge awards him sole custody ten days after Chris is born; five days later, Shannon is gone.
2. Buck sticks to himself in high school. He’s popular enough; he plays every sport he can just to have a reason to stay out of his house, a reason to be around people who want him around, but he doesn’t really get close to anybody. He’s heading into his sophomore year when he hears about how Eddie Diaz knocked a girl from another school up and after listening to people gossip for three days while he’s forced to wipe up soda spills and tolerate middle aged women rubbing his arm, he finds himself on Eddie’s block. They know each other--everyone knows each other, they’ve been going to the same schools since birth--and both he and Eddie are on the track team, although they’ve only and a few conversations. Still, he feels the urge to check in, because he doubts anyone else is. Eddie’s mom shuts the door in his face for his trouble.
3. Having an infant is hard. It’s harder when you’re a 17 year old fuck up, and even more difficult when your parents don't think you can do anything right and are constantly on you to sign your parental rights over to them. Eddie ends up moving in with Abuela three weeks before his senior year starts, which causes the biggest fight they've had yet and rather than wait for his sister to get back with his car, Eddie grabs the backpack he’s been using as a diaper bag, takes Chris, and leaves the house. They end up at the little cafe half a mile from the high school, and Eddie walks in the door because he has nowhere else to go. When Buck cocks his head and says, “you doing okay, man?”, Eddie almost cries. He hasn’t been asked how he was since he found out Shannon was pregnant.
4. Buck brings him a sandwich and an iced tea and shifts back and forth before asking if he could please hold the baby. He spends the next two hours gently bouncing Chris up and down, smiling at him, until he falls asleep, and rather than give him back to Eddie he eases him into the crook of his arm. Buck loves kids, and he’s always been good with babies in particular; Maddie did a lot of babysitting when he was younger and she’d bring him with more often than not.
5. Eddie and Buck spend more and more time together, usually at Abuela’s, playing with Chris on the carpet or taking him out on walks in the evening after they’ve gotten their homework done. Buck breaks his wrist in early September and, rather than spend his whole time on the bench watching the football team, quits. All the hours he’d spent practicing are now spent with Eddie, trying to make a now five month old Chris laugh. When Buck skips the winter formal because Chris has a fever and Eddie hasn’t slept in nearly 24 hours, Eddie hands the sleeping baby over, watches Buck get settled on the couch, then leans over and kisses him gently.
6. Eddie’s a Mexican-American kid raised in a Catholic family in Texas. With a seven month old. Once the high of being able to kiss Buck wears off, the shame and doubt starts to set in. When he tells Buck, “maybe we shouldn’t do this,” Buck looks at him and says, “Why? You can’t get me pregnant.”
7. Eddie signs up for the Army on his 18th birthday. He doesn’t tell his family. He doesn’t tell Buck. He knows what the reactions will be, but he’s a teenage father who has very little options available to him, and he knows he has to do what’s best for his kid. He puts in to be a medic, figuring that will transfer easily to a job after he puts his four years in.
8. Chris lives with Eddie’s parents when he leaves. Despite Eddie asking them to please let Buck see Chris once or twice a week, they never open the door or answer the phone. He doesn’t see Chris for nearly a month; not until Abuela walks into the cafe with Chris on her hip. Chris reaches out for him immediately, and Buck absolutely does not burst into tears. Abuela tells him that she misses him as well, and lets it slip that she watches Chris on Tuesdays and Thursdays until dinner. It doesn’t give him a lot of time to work with, but he if goes straight there from school he usually has three hours to spend with Chris.
9. Eddie’s been stationed in San Antonio for almost a year now, and Buck is heading into his senior year. Buck writes Eddie a letter every week--they both have cell phones and they talk every night, but he likes the feel of pouring his feelings out onto paper. Eddie only writes back one time; post-marked the day he had told Buck that he was being deployed. The only thing the letter says is “I love you”. It’s the first time he’s said it.
10. They don't talk a lot while Eddie is deployed. Buck keeps writing letters and he gets them back sporadically; sometimes three or four will come all at once after two months of not hearing from Eddie. But when he does get them, it’s pages worth. Eddie writes about what it’s like in Afghanistan, writes about all the different people in his unit and where they’re from, what they’re like, writes about times he remembers with Buck. But Buck’s favorite is when Eddie writes about what their life will be like when he’s out: that after spending so much time in the desert, they’ll live by the ocean. They’ll spend days running around after Chris, weekends driving around and exploring, they’ll have jobs they love, and they’ll never, ever be apart.
11. Chris gets his CP diagnosis three months before Eddie’s supposed to come home. Buck doesn’t hear from him until the day Eddie shows up on his porch, crying.
12. They go to the courthouse the day after Buck graduates high school to get married. Eddie signs up for his second tour three days later. He doesn’t tell Buck before.

→ Her Connections
Parent Names:
John Walker (Father): John and Sylvia died in a plane crash when Agnes was 17 and Edith was 7. It emotionally scarred both siblings and caused Edith to shut many people out. She has lost most memories of her parents, but found a scrapbook of photos of them. They were big travellers and it has inspired Edith to learn as much about the world as possible.
Sylvia Walker (Mother): John and Sylvia died in a plane crash when Agnes was 17 and Edith was 7. It emotionally scarred both siblings and caused Edith to shut many people out. She has lost most memories of her parents, but found a scrapbook of photos of them. They were big travellers and it has inspired Edith to learn as much about the world as possible.
Sibling Names:
Agnes Newman (Sister): Agnes raised Edith after their parents died. She resented her sister for trying to take over her parents’ roles and didn’t realize until much later that she was just trying to do her best. Edith apologized and reconnected to her sister about 20 years ago. They became very close in that time, and Agnes eventually got Edith to see she was running herself ragged. She convinced her to take a break from the insanity that is DC, and live in Chicago with her and her family. Edith loves to play aunt to Aggie’s young kids and is happy with her move.
Children Names:
None
Romantic Connections:
Austin Semler (Boyfriend): Edith was immediately intrigued by Austin. Unlike most nimbles who are prone to talking on and on about themselves or the last bit of information they heard, he can speak on any topic and have an informed opinion of it. Unfortunately, she began dating someone else before she realized his full depths. They became truly great friends over the 3 years she has been here and she felt herself falling out of whatever feelings she had for Neal and falling for Austin instead. It became him who she wanted to talk about her fears and hopes and the exciting and frustrating parts of her day. He supported her unconditionally in her career and they would be able to talk for hours to one another. Eventually she realized staying with Neal and emotionally cheating on him with Austin was a bad thing to do, so she dumped him. Edith had planned to take a few months and maybe establish who she was without dating someone, but found herself in front of Austin’s door and decided to jump in feet first. Everything fell into place and Edith, for the first time since moving to Chicago, has felt at peace and at home with him. The relationship has progressed quickly, since they were basically already dating for 3 years. They are always at one another’s places and haven’t spent many nights alone since they got together.
Neal Cumming (Ex-Boyfriend): Neal was forward and asked her out the first week she got to Chicago. They had good compatibility for the first year, but then her eyes started to wander towards Austin. She tried to focus on the effort and connection she had with Neal, in an effort to combat her stereotypical flightiness and natural curiosity of what else was out there. She and Neal kept stringing the relationship along, until she was basically cheating on Neal emotionally with Austin. About a month ago she broke it off with him, and they’re not yet past the angry ex phase.
Platonic Connections:
Isla Johns (Friend): Isla was the first non-coyote friend that Edith made in Chicago. Isla stopped her after seeing a tear on the side of her dress, and found something at the Magazine office for her to wear instead. She is the only person Edith allows herself to indulge in talking to about her clothes and makeup.
Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Snow (Friend): Liz has been a major supporter of her career. She’s not sure if it’s because Austin spoke highly of her, but Liz has pushed for her to get the best stories, interviews, and air time.
Percival “Percy” McCormick III (Boss): Percy values her experience and is very willing to give her whatever she wants to stay at his network. She has her own show and is very happy with it. Currently, however, he is pitching a joint show with Emmanuel. Neither are interested, and she’s begun ducking out of rooms when she sees Percy coming.
Tim Boaz (Friendly): The Boaz twins are Austin’s best friends but Edith hasn’t had personal one on one time with either of them enough to call them her friends also. She doesn’t mind them constantly being over Austin’s place and has been planning on getting to know them better now that she and Austin are official.
Lee Boaz (Friendly): The Boaz twins are Austin’s best friends but Edith hasn’t had personal one on one time with either of them enough to call them her friends also. She doesn’t mind them constantly being over Austin’s place and has been planning on getting to know them better now that she and Austin are official.
Emmanuel Flores (Healthy Competitive): Edith thinks Emmanuel is a great reporter, and investigator. She just doesn’t really want him anywhere near her show, or to have her show replaced with one that has both of them on it. She’s spoken about it with Emmanuel and knows he agrees.
Anton Kowalski (Friend): Anton is a bucket of sunshine who has been amusing to Edith since she met him. Anton has taken to Austin and a few of the loner members of the clan, bringing them together in a way Edith was sure was impossible. She isn’t sure if he knows what he’s doing and is grateful that Austin has found himself another friend who seems more in tune with those around him.
Ryan Cleirigh (New Friend): Edith randomly found Ryan’s podcast one day and became obsessed. She loves his wide variety of topics dedicated to every species and has recently reached out wanting a spot on his next podcast. They met up for lunch and chatted to see how good of a match she would be. They’ve exchanged numbers and have scheduled her in for his next show.
Maya Morris (Friendly/Contact): Maya is Edith contact for the rat shifters. Maya has always been nice and respectful. Edith has tried to tone down her personality in order not to scare Maya away or ruin the easy flow they have between them.
Angel Landyn (Contact/Annoyance): Aidan and Angel are Edith human shifter contacts. They both annoy Edith to no end and she has tried to talk the higher ups into finding her different contacts but it also seems to fall through.
Aidan Hopewell (Contact/Annoyance): Aidan and Angel are Edith human shifter contacts. They both annoy Edith to no end and she has tried to talk the higher ups into finding her different contacts but it also seems to fall through.
Shannon Harris (Friendly): Edith has been covering a lot of media on the current campaign trail which Shannon and Vanessa have been playing a part in. Shannon seems like a sweet girl and Edith usually has a great time working with her.
Vanessa ‘Vee’ Stone (Friendly): Edith has been covering a lot of media on the current campaign trail which Shannon and Vanessa have been playing a part in. Vanessa and Edith bump heads a lot and Edith has purposely taken to debating with her since she loses her cool more easily than the other jackals. Edith enjoys Vanessa never taking it to heart and laughing out to her when the day is over.
Hostile Connections:
Breha Kaur (Dislike): Breha and Edith had started off on the wrong foot the day they met. Their personalities are constantly crashing against each other. Edith has continued to make sharp off handed comments and Breha has continued to be a pompous snoot. HR has invited them both into her office multiple times over the years and it has done nothing but add fuel to their fights.
Anya Grace (Unsure): She knew Austin was flirting for fun with some girl in his class, she did not know he had continued to flirt with her. That was a fight, but they have come to terms that he can’t totally destroy the friend group by viciously dumping her. They’ve agreed on him ghosting her until she loses interest, but Edith has contemplated showing up to walk home with him from class to make it obvious he’s taken.

RWBY Remarks: As silly as this might sound on paper, Aaron Dismuke needs to reward himself with the very character he plays in RWBY for that amazing performance he gave in Episode 3. HOLY COW!
What’s up guys! It’s your gyal, LittleMissSquiggles here with another RWBY Episode Review. Not only is today RWBY Tuesday but it’s also October 31st and as a RWBY fan, you all know what that means. No I’m not talking just about Halloween, I’m talking about today being the show’s very own Ruby Rose’s birthday. So happy birthday to Miss Rose.
But as much as today is her special day, I’m not here to talk about Ruby. Not when EPISODE 3 just dropped! WHOOT! WHOOT!
So Episode 3 of RWBY Volume 5; did I enjoy it? OF COURSE I did. So much so that I’ve shamelessly watched it at least three times or more. I mostly watched it for that infamous scene with Team RNJR, Qrow and Oscar.
Firstly, can you just give a round of applause to Aaron Dismuke for his fantastic voice work as Ozpin-Oscar or OZcar as the fandom has sort of dubbed him. Thanks to all the folks who answered me when I asked about how the CRWBY handled Oscar transitioning into Ozpin.
I’m really pleased that they went with Aaron continuing to voice him even though it was a different character and as I’ve mentioned before, he did a commendable job. Although admittedly I did find the whole Shannon/Ozpin voice layered with Aaron’s Ozpin-Oscar voice a bit jarring and unnecessary at times. While it did help to truly sell the disconnection and instability of Ozpin’s curse (y’know talking from a body that isn’t entirely yours which is an amazing effect), I couldn’t help but think there were times when they could’ve just allowed Aaron to carry on talking as Ozpin cause he was already doing a perfect job. That being said, I only had this problem during the ONE moment when Ozpin-Oscar straight up Power Ranger style backflips onto the couch to announce that he was going to train Team RJNR.
The line where he said ‘...Well I believe I was the Headmaster of Beacon’ practically breathing confidence, like I dunno...I felt like we didn’t need the effect then. It didn’t distract me nor was it bad, I just felt like it wasn’t needed there, y’know. I guess you could say I really like hearing Aaron talk as Ozpin so I basically ended up frowning upon any point in his lines that took me out of my full enjoyment of performance, y’know what I mean? Cause as I say again, I REALLY LOVED OSCAR TALKING AS OZPIN! IT WAS SO COOL!
But then again I wonder if it would have had the same impact as it did without the voice layer effect; even with the background music. Not sure.
But overall, I was floored by Aaron’s performance this episode. While I’m not sure if story plans on prolonging the training episode; saving it for Episode 5, I’d love it if they continued the focus being on Team RNJR and Oscar/Ozpin in Mistrel. Even if they plan on saving the training montage til like half way through the season, it would be good to get some episode moments where the members of Team RNJR get to interact with Oscar, just as Oscar as he’s settling down to stay with them. It’d be cute if we got a moment where they show him to his room. The Volume poster did tease Oscar having a close friendship with Qrow.
Not sure whether that was an indication of it being canon in the series or a nice clever nod of nostalgia for those of us ole school FMA fans who know both Oscar and Qrow’s Vas are the original Elric Brothers so seeing them together and having that close brotherly bond again in another series would be a beautiful touch.
Not to mention, Qrow being a big brother to Oscar would be the sweetest thing ever. Things were a bit awkward between them in Episode 1 after Qrow got drunk and Oscar was forced to bring him home but...once he sobered up, things became light. I quite liked the moment where Qrow pulled the reigns in on Team RJNR badgering a very uncomfortable-looking Oscar and to see him smile gratefully at Qrow with a genuine thanks was quite sweet.
I especially liked the bit where Ozpin announces that he’ll be training the team. As if we didn’t need further confirmation of how much of a badass Ozpin is. Plus this will truly be the first time in the series where we actually get to see Ozpin mentor the students. Yes he was the headmaster but when have we ever seen him really teach if it didn’t meant launching his students into the wilderness and forcing them to fend off the Grimm while searching for chess pieces. I laughed when Oscar’s all like “...Wait...WHAT!” when Ozpin is explaining that not even he will be exempted from his vigorous training regiment. So not only am I excited to see Ozpin train Team RNJR but also Oscar’s own training as well. However I’m curious as to how that’s gonna work though. Is Ozpin gonna teach RNJR the entire time but switchs controls back and forth between himself and Oscar so that he can mentor but Oscar would be included in the training process? Or will it be a thing where Ozpin takes full control of Oscar’s body to train Team RNJR but it will actually be Qrow who will be handling Oscar’s own training (another jab at the possibility of the two developing a strong big brother-little brother bond) with maaaaaaybe some assistance from Ruby. She could be his sparring partner---a worthy opponent (and a healthy distraction).
I know there is a lot more stuff to cover with this episode; particularly that infamous RosePine/RoseGarden moment that I heard about even before this episode premiered. I’m actually going to save that talk for another musing post to be honest. There is always much for me to talk about regarding RoseGarden and I think having its own post with ties back to this episode will be a good thing. Plus, there are some things I’ve been itching to say about this ship...well...more things than I’ve already said previously.
But yeah, in a nutshell, I really enjoyed Episode 3. How could I not? The whole Ozpin-Oscar scene was flawless and easily my favourite part of this entire episode. Y’know how I love my smol bean farmhand avocado ‘Little Cute Boy Ozpin’ godchild. (I love how even the series itself acknowledges Oscar’s inevitable adorkableness. Thanks for that meta moment CRWBY)
I know this week’s review was more talk regarding the Mistrel moments however I also enjoyed it for the Weiss moment too. Speaking of which, great introduction to the Spring Maiden character or the potential Spring Maiden candidate. I didn’t really catch her name from the episode. I think the bandit guy said her name was Vernal or something like that. They did hint at that strongly in the intro. Either she is the long lost Spring maiden or just someone who’s gonna have a really antagonistic opposing relationship with Cinder Fall once she gets to the Branwen Tribe.
Either way, I like her overall design and from the brief scene she was in, she’s definitely gearing up to be an intriguing new character this volume. That’s nice.
Well we all know that Weiss is definitely going to make her grand escape next time the season cuts back to her story. Since Winter’s no longer in Mistrel, where is Weiss going to go? The whole objective of her journey was to rendezvous with with her sister in Mistrel. Does this mean that she’ll spend her part of the volume searching for her sister or...will she still decide to journey to Mistrel; ignoring what the bandits said and heading in that direction to make sure for herself (after all, it’s the only lead she has). That way, even if Weiss doesn’t meet up with Winter in Mistrel, she’ll still end up reuniting with Ruby, Jaune, Nora and Ren. That’s a plus no matter where you chose to look, actually.
I think Weiss might chose the latter and continue her search to find her sister in Mistrel. But there is still one question that remains unanswered for me. What happened to Atlas pilot guy? Did he survive the crash too and is also being held captive by the Branwen Tribe of bandits? I really hope so because, if Weiss is going to be travelling on her own towards...wherever she believes her sister to be, she’ll probably need a companion. And while I know he was only meant to be a side character, there’s that inkling part of me that really wants him to be alive so that he can, if possible be promoted to a supporting character for Weiss.
I wanna know his name! I wanna see his face, dammit! I didn’t expect to like Atlas pilot guy so much and now that I do, I don’t want him to be gone so quickly. Oh! Oh! Y’know what! Maybe it can be a thing where, after Weiss escapes, she discovers that the bandits are keeping Atlas pilot guy in another camp and she actually puts her journey to find Winter on hold in order to go rescue him. It’ll be a nice parallel back to how she wanted to help those other cargo ships from the Lancers but pilot guy was all like ‘...nah leave em to someone else to save.’
Weiss seems to have grown into the kind of huntress who is willing to step up to help others even if it means deviating from a goal she had originally set out. Maybe we can have her go to risk her life to save Atlas pilot guy; choosing to not leave him behind despite only knowing him shortly.
I honestly liked their dynamic. I liked how friendly he was to Weiss and I genuinely enjoyed their exchange of conversations together. REALLY want him to stick around in the show and stay with Weiss.
Speaking of which, I don’t think Yang is going to meet up with Weiss. I think Shady guy is either gonna double cross Yang leading to her having to battle her way past him (like maybe he was kicked out of the tribe and is leading Yang on) or even if he does lead Yang straight to the Branwen Tribe’s main camp, there is a possibility that by the time she arrives, Weiss would’ve already escaped.
So if Weiss does escape before Yang arrives, I’m hoping the CRWBY made her escape just to go back to rescue Atlas pilot guy (who fans would learn actually has a name) and the two end up becoming travel buddies.
This is probably an unpopular opinion with RWBY fans but, I actually don’t want any members of Team RWBY to meet up; at least not yet. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying each of the four girls’ separate stories and development; particularly when it crosses with other characters whose roles were otherwise secondary or even tertiary in past volumes (For e.g. in the case of Sun Wukong and the remaining members of Team JNPR).
That being said, I don’t want Weiss to meet up with Yang. Up until this point, she’s been having her own journey so...let her continue to do that. And if she is to have a travel companion upon her grand escape from being sold back to her father by the Branwen Tribe (not like that is gonna be possible. Didn’t Weiss’ lil shithead of a younger brother say that her presence as the Schee family heir isn’t necessary anymore since he’s taken her place); let it be Atlas pilot guy.
I really cannot stress enough, how much I want him to be alive and be another friend and ally to the team. But I guess we’ll see how things go.
So those are my thoughts on Episode 3. Another great episode. I’m really enjoying the way things are shaping up this season. Seriously the more I watch Volume 5, the more I see it becoming one of my favourite seasons for sure. Look out for more of my musings coming out this week. In the mean time, I’ll see you fellow RWBY fans next time!

I know the timeline is vague, but do you think about the timing of the events of 1967? We have Lion/Sayo's birth (presumably), Beatrice II's fall, and Natsuhi's rejection, and all I've managed to piece together personally is that 1) Shannon's birthday is probably not the true one, 2) the baby was probably born not long before Beatrice fell, and 3) the fall+rejection likely happened between May and October sometime, because of season references in the scenes. Do you have any opinions/head canons?
Hum...
If we’ve to be honest we don’t know when Lion/Sayo had birth. Both Sayo and Lion’s birthday might be fake. They probably are.
Anyway what we know happened in 1967 is the following.
Natsuhi can’t conceive and keeps on seeing doctors to discover what’s wrong with her (the manga depicts it as if it were summer).
Ushiromiya Lion is born.
Rosa’s tutor says something to Rosa’s mother that Rosa didn’t want her to know. The woman scolds Rosa harshly and Rosa escapes in the forests, and discovers Kuwadorian.
Rosa meets Beatrice (the second) and the two talk. [from how the scene is drawn this could happen in spring or autumn... I’ll say autumn since Natsuhi’s visit was in summer but maybe it’s just me and we were actually shown an old visit]
Beatrice (the second) escapes from Kuwadoria with Rosa.
Beatrice falls from a cliff by by accident and dies.
Rosa escapes and reaches home.
During the night Rosa can’t fall asleep so she phones to Genji and asks his help.
For several days Rosa is afraid Kinzo would call her and scold her but nothing happens.
While Krauss is on a business trip and Rosa is on a journey with her friends Kinzo entrusts Lion to Natsuhi.
Three days later Natsuhi causes the servant holding the baby to falls from a cliff.
Natsuhi runs back home and, when asked by Kinzo, she claims she has no idea where the baby is.The Ushiromiya servants searches for the missing servant and the baby and Genji finds them, the servant is already dead.
Lion is still alive and Genji asks Nanjo’s help.
Natsuhi through is told that both are dead and reports it to Kinzo who, apparently, goes insane.
The servant’s family is compensated.
Natsuhi confesses what happened to Krauss and he tells Natsuhi to forget the incident.
Lion survives. We know he will later be sent to the Fukuin House, his name changed into Yasuda Sayo, though we don’t know if this happened in the same year or, for a while, they hid him some other place.
In the beginning of October a family conference might have taken place (Eva is married and living away from Rokkenjima... it’s unsure if Rudolf is living on the island or not).
In the middle of October Asumu and Kyrie are made pregnant by Rudolf (both babies were meant to have birth the 17th July and I’m assuming they’re born exactly 9 months after they were conceived... though, truth to be told, they could have been born a little earlier or later than exactly 9 months).
At the end of November Jessica is conceived (Jessica’s birthday is the 25th of August and I’m assuming she’s born exactly 9 months after she was conceived... though, truth to be told, she could have been born a little earlier or later than exactly 9 months).
Likely around this time Asumu realized she was pregnant and she and Rudolf marry.
The whole story is unclear about Kinzo’s wife (the cousins supposedly met her so where was she during all this? Visiting her own parents? We know she needed to be alive to scold Rosa so where was she when Kinzo entrusted the baby to Natsuhi?) and if Rudolf is still living on the island or not.
Since the VN says that only Natsuhi and Kinzo were on the island I’ll assume Kinzo’s wife left for some reason and Rudolf isn’t living on the island anymore even if he’s not married yet.
That’s all we know for that year.
Everything is very vague so, apart from the info we have, we can theorize whatever we prefer (we can, for example, put to debate if Lion was immediately entrusted to the Fukuin house or if he remained in Nanjo’s care... or someone else’s care for the first years of his life).
I hope it’s of some help!

Jess Williamson Interview: Woman and her Symbols
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Jess Williamson is able to look back with wisdom and gratefulness at the period of her life that inspired her new album Cosmic Wink. Moving from Texas to LA, not knowing whether the person you love is going with you, and an aging dog might not seem like traditional fodder for a record. Yet, Williamson was able to channel all of these anxieties into something truly spiritual.
It’s easy to get lost in the timelessness of the music--somewhere between high and lonesome country and expansive indie rock--but here’s the the record's chronological context: Williamson was already planning to move to LA but was falling in love with her bandmate Shane Renfro (who also records as RF Shannon). She moved, he visited, and then he moved to LA. “We pretty quickly merged our lives,” Williamson told me in late June over the phone. The two (Renfro co-produced and co-wrote Cosmic Wink) made the record back in Texas. A month before that, Williamson’s beloved dog Frankie passed away. “I think she knew my life was about to change in some pretty drastic ways that meant I would be touring and traveling a lot more. I think she knew she wasn’t down with that,” Williamson said. “She picked the perfect time to leave. Before we made the record...she was able to be with her vet that knew her forever. She had a lovely service surrounded by the people she loved.”
Talking to Williamson, you get the sense she has these innate connections with both living things and herself. She’s at once intellectual and sort of mystic, referring to psychological theories in the same sentence as astrology. That interplay certainly finds its way into the songs on Cosmic Wink. Opener “I See The White” is a song about love and consciousness, while “Wild Rain”’s exemplary of her self-reflection. “You say there's two women / Living inside of me / And one's doubt and desire / And she's our enemy / Yet it's her wellness / That draws you in close,” she sings, exuding both a sense of grounded self-awareness and otherworldly warmth. It’s also worth noting that Williamson’s wish to establish connection even finds its way into interviews--she’s the first person to ever ask me in return what’s my favorite song on her new album.
Williamson is eager to return to Chicago after a successful show opening for Loma at Schubas back in May, which she called “the best show of the whole tour.” Tonight at Empty Bottle, she and her band will play all the songs from Cosmic Wink. Below, read the rest of our conversation, edited for length and clarity, in which she breaks down the album’s aesthetic, title, cover art, and more.
Since I Left You: Cosmic Wink is based on some pretty publicized distinct events--happy and sad. Was there anything specific you wanted to communicate about yourself through the record, or did you more make it to process what was going on in your life?
Jess Williamson: I was ready for a shift. My previous records are a lot more somber and sparse and more haunting and sad. I was ready to change that, to make music in a different way. My personality is not very somber and sad. That’s just where the music was coming from for a long time. I was ready to make a record that felt more me, to be able to relax and do it. I started touring a lot more, and I was touring solo, and playing all these sad songs--which of course, I love. Most of my favorite music is sad songs. But you’re asking a lot of your audience to be quiet and listen to the lyrics. I was opening up for bigger bands who were having a lot of fun playing loud, upbeat music. I realized I really wanted to do that. That’s a big reason the record sounds the way it does. Giving myself permission to have a little more fun.
SILY: Is that where the “cosmic” part of the album title comes from?
JW: A few months before I started writing the record, I read this book called Man And His Symbols. The first section is by Carl Jung, and the next is by other authors. But he edited it, and they’re all people he worked closely with. Essentially, the book is all about working with your unconscious and working with dreams. There’s this Jungian concept called synchronicity--looking for meaningful coincidences you really can’t explain. If you start to notice these things in your life, you realize they’re pointing to something larger you need to pay attention to or a path you needed to go down. I just kind of started learning about this stuff and getting super interested in this Jungian way of living.
I'm also really into astrology. It was my birthday, and it was a new moon in Sagittarius, and I’m a Sagittarius, so I was like, “This is really special.” I was reading about it, and one of the readings I came across said to look for synchronicities during this new moon because they are cosmic winks from the universe letting you know you’re not alone. Right after that, I came out to LA, started this new romantic relationship, and was looking for signs all the time. My whole life turned upside-down, so I needed something to hold onto. Whether I was looking for answers or not, I found them. In a way, the record was a cosmic wink itself. I took some pretty big leaps of faith, and my life is for the better, because I’m able to make music the way I want to, having signed with Mexican Summer. I made the album before they were in the picture. It all is kind of looking up.
SILY: Did you get any new pets after your dog died?
JW: No, I’m not ready, because I’m still heartbroken over Frankie. I would feel like I was betraying her [laughs]. But we also have so much touring coming up. It wouldn’t be fair to a new puppy. Hopefully one day.
SILY: What’s the story behind the cover art for the album?
JW: The front cover is a photo of me in Malibu that Shane took. We were on a hike and going to my friend’s engagement party. We literally changed clothes in the car, and I put makeup on, but as we were driving we saw this insane sunset. I said, “Shane, we have to turn around. That’s amazing.” He just snapped this photo of me, and it turned out to be the perfect cover choice. I knew I wanted a photo overlooking the ocean at sunset. It made sense for this album.
The back is this great design that Bailey Elder did--she’s one of the graphic design team members at Mexican Summer. I love it because different aspects of the art represent different aspects of the lyrics. I actually sent her a picture of Frankie, and she drew Frankie for the back of it. There’s a little slice of the sunset on the back, too, joining the front and back cover as if it’s a little portal. I can’t speak too much on it, because it’s really Bailey’s art, but that’s my take on it.
SILY: This might be a hard question, but do you have a favorite song on the record?
JW: That’s such a hard question. It changes. It used to be “Wild Rain”. I don’t know. I really don’t have a favorite. At one point it was “I See The White”.
SILY: Your stated influences on the record are a lot of canonical rock ‘n’ roll from the 60′s or even the 90′s. Did you want to make this record a bit more accessible?
JW: Absolutely. I wanted to make a record that felt classic and universal. To be honest, when I hear a song from Heart Song in certain contexts, I’m embarrassed. It’s a really intense, deeply personal, vulnerable record. That can be uncomfortable, even for me at times. But now, I’m like, “Yeah, let’s listen to Cosmic Wink!” It was an exercise in making an album that’s universal. Of course it’s about me, but it can be about anyone. The lyrics are more universal and open-ended on purpose.
SILY: What else is next for you?
JW: Today, I’m finishing some cover songs for Aquarium Drunkard. The rest of my year is touring, and in between tours, trying to write.
SILY: What songs are you covering?
JW: I’m doing “Unravel” by Bjork and “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere” by Dwight Yoakam.
SILY: Anything you’ve been listening to, watching, or reading that’s caught your attention?
JW: I’ve been listening to the new RF Shannon album called Trickster Blues. It’s amazing. I’ve been reading How To Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan. It just came out. The subtitle is What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence. I’m about halfway through. I just watched Won’t You Be My Neighbor. I cried. What was really interesting for me was that I’m also reading a Ram Dass book called Polishing The Mirror. It came out about 4 years ago--it’s a really succinct book about how to live your life well. The way Fred Rogers lived his life is essentially the exact same way Dass talks about how to live a good life. It's all the same. All the great teachings about how to live and be a good person on this earth. It doesn’t matter what religion or spiritual context you’re coming from. Fred Rogers was a minister. He was a Christian. And what better example of how to live in a Christ-like way. I’m not a Christian, but I do think that Jesus Christ is an enlightened being that was on this earth that was an example for how to live.

(Is there any confirmation that the scene where Battler makes the promise to Shannon happens indeed in 1980 and not in 1979? Because if it were in the 1979 conference, then the following scene of Rudolf talking to Krauss and Natsuhi could be in 1980 and it'd match with Ange's birthdate for her to be indeed 6 years old in 1986 and 18 in 1998, as she explicitely mentions in EP7 Tea Party.)
Let’s see...
I’ve checked in the official timeline we’re told it happened in 1979
1979, October –
Battlerexchanges his future promise with Shannon.
1980 –
Ushiromiya Asumu dies.
Rudolfsuddenly marries Kyrie while still mourning.
Rudolfand Kyrie’s daughter Ange is born.
Battlerleaves the Ushiromiya Family. Takes the last name of his grandparents (mother’sside).
1981, September –
Rudolfbrings Kyrie and Ange to the family conference.
Now... actually Battler left BEFORE Ange had birth, and we know that Ange was born on June the 17th, so Battler left in the first half of 1980... according to the official timeline. This would make Ange being conceiver around September... a month before Battler and Sayo exchanged their promise.
Anyway the manga tells the whole story like that.
In 1980 we’re shown that Rudolf and Krauss talk about Battler’s actions... but we don’t know if it’s a family conference or not as Eva and Rosa aren’t there. It could be just Rudolf visiting.
I’ll skip the rest and jump here.
Krauss talks as the child who’s going to be born, hence Ange isn’t born yet. Therefore this meeting should definitely not be a family conference but something that happened between the family conference in which Shannon and Battler exchanged their promise and Ange’s birth.
Then Sayo learns that Battler left the Ushiromiya and wonders if she’ll come to the conference that year.
Shannon should have learnt of Battler leaving the family when Rudolf came to tell them the news, hence in 1980 (in the VN we see she learns it from Mannon who overheard Rudolf and Krauss saying so). They talk of Kyrie coming to the family conference of ‘this year’, hence 1980 and Sayo wonders if Battler will come as well.
The 1980 conference however, at which Kyrie should have taken part, is skipped.
We’re shown the 1981 conference, in which Ange doesn’t look at all like a baby who’s 1 year old.
The manga cuts the dialogues between the adults but they’re in the VN so here they are:
Kyrie: "Pleased to meet you. ...My name is Kyrie. I hope we can all become quick friends."Eva: "I've known your name longer than I've known Asumu-san's. I hear you're Rudolf's old girlfriend."Kyrie: "*giggle*. Yes, we've known each other for quite a long time..."Natsumi: "...Welcome to the Ushiromiya family. I hope you find it easy to grow comfortable here."Kyrie: "Yes. I'd like to grow comfortable quickly, so that I can support my husband."Hideyoshi: "But look at how cute that little girl is. What's her name...?!"Rosa: "This is Ange-chan. What a cute name." [EP 7]
In short, apparently Kyrie never made it to the 1980 conference AT WHICH SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO TAKE PART as this is the first time she introduces herself to the family.
Although Requiem went on and on in regard to Sayo’s worry for Battler not to show up and to her pain when he skipped the family conferences, we never get a word from her about that first, fateful 1980 family conference in which he supposedly didn’t come.
Since the family conference of 1980 at which Kyrie should have taken part (and didn’t) was skipped, the VN was a little less clear than the manga about the passing time (it only says ‘one year later’ in reference to 1981), Ange’s birthday back then was mostly unknown, when Beatrice referred to the sin of 6 years ago some assumed it was the promised in itself, not the fact that Battler didn’t show up (and that therefore 7 years are gone from when the promise was made) and various other reasons, I remember that in the past there was confusion between when exactly happened what. I remember having been confused as well.
It didn’t help that Battler and Sayo were terribly young already if you assumed they made their promise in 1980 (Sayo is 10, Battler is 12) so it seemed even harder to think they had done it when Sayo was actually 9 (Maria’s age!) and Battler 11. To worsen everything there’s the matter of George, as it would mean at 16 he was jealous of his 11 years old cousin being friendly with a 9 year old.
Complicate everything with how Ryukishi never draw a young Shannon’s sprite so he keeps on using the 16 years olf Shannon’s sprite for the whole thing... how we’re told that Battler remembers Shannon was wearing a bra and Shannon felt the need to fake having breasts already and was therefore depicted as having such in the manga...
...while Maria, to quote Battler, is flat as a board, as well as Sayo looking bigger than Maria and the idea that Battler at 12 could take Sayo away and that she would have been allowed to live alone at 10 (it’s hard enough to picture them doing it with Battler 13 and Sayo 11...) so there was a general preference for assuming that the promise took place in 1980.
I’ve to admit I would also have preferred if the promise took place in 1980 and, although it’s rude, my personal impression is that Ryukishi didn’t wrote all the details of his timeline at the beginning (even now that he released it, it still miss many dates) and messed up a bit in this whole thing as he probably didn’t think it was that relevant for the whole mystery.
Well, no point in discussing it now as we’ve a canon confirmation. The promise took place in 1979.
Of course, it’s sort of ironic how Sayo back then was the same age as Maria but well, life in Umineko has a weird sense of irony... -_-
