The Dynamic Duo
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1412
Characters: MC, Gavin, Minor, Victor
Part Two: Criminal Intent
The studio was silent, everyone doing as the officer said, writing away their statements of events only whispers could be heard. In the corner of the studio radiated ever so cold, Victor too was sitting in a chair typing away on his laptop Goldman rushed over (thankful that you weren’t anywhere near him at this time). Looking around; Gavin was chatting to some of the senior managers of the Barner Wors team. Minor was sitting next to you vigorously writing away on his paper, “Hey Minor, when exactly did you contact Gavin?” you prompted.
Minor looked up from his paper with a sheer look of guilt, “I’m sorry boss, but things just didn’t seem right, and after reading some of the scandals Barner Wors has been involved in... I called Gavin for advice… I’m sorry for not warning you...” He sheepishly looked back down, like a boy caught stealing cookies from the cookie jar.
You weren’t mad per say, but you did feel a tad bit upset, you tried to keep everyone from fighting but failed to notice maybe things weren’t as they seemed. “Thank you Minor.” A small smile at your lips.
He looked up from his paper in pure shock, you thanked him?
“I admit not being in the loop took me by surprise, but thank you for standing up for me… You know, behind scenes and in front. Next time, best leave Victor to me. I don’t want to lose a good employee because I couldn’t stand up for myself.” Laying a hand on the top of his head, ruffling his hair.
Minors face went a sly shade of pink before quickly looking down again, “Thanx boss Ill try my best to remember that!”
As you and Minor were having a moment, Gavin approached, “I’ve received statements from their team and dismissed them for now. Ill just collect the statements from yours and then begin inspecting the area. After doing so if we could reconvene in your office, I’ll need to ask you a couple questions if I find anything.”
Minor piped up, “Ill show you round! I pretty much know this place like the back of my hand now, it’ll make things easier for you to access!”
Before Gavin could turn down Minors offer, you agreed, it made sense and would allow Gavin access to anything around the company he needed. Plus, you had to get a hold of your insurance company and still deal with Victor, just then.
“Here * Victor pops up out of no where handing Gavin his statement* If there isn’t anything else ill be leaving.”
Gavin accepted the papers and nodded, “I’ll be in touch.”
Slightly glancing, “If I’m unable to answer right away you can contact my assistant Goldman, Mc has the details.” Looking at you, “Be at LFG later on.” As quick as he popped up, he was gone.
“Asshole.”
You looked at Gavin bewildered; did he just call Victor an asshole!?! You stifled a laugh, “He’s cold and strict but he isn’t as bad as he looks.”
“Your too nice…” Gavin gave you a look next, he may not have been smiling but his eyes were.
Gavin and Minor go off to start looking around, and you make way to your office. God, this was going to be a late one tonight, and you still had to deal with Victor. Just thinking about it made your palms sweaty and head hurt.
.
.
Meanwhile, back in studio Gavin and Minor were the only ones left. Gavin was hunched over the crashed light on the ground, lost in thought.
“This could have been bad” Minor observes, running his hand through his hair.
Gavin looks up to the area above, “Anyway we can get up there?”
Minor thinks for a moment, “Uh yea there’s stairs that take the lighting techs just above, follow me.”
Gavin and Minor reach the top of the studio just above the set, Gavin starts examining the area were the spotlight came from. Noticing few screws on the walk rail, and no clear damages due to breakage on the beams that supported the light, “do the security cameras cover any sections in here?”
Minor seemingly understanding what Gavin’s getting to, “Sure does let’s go check out the footage Sherlock!”
“Minor?”
“You mean Watson?!” Minor turns back grinning to Gavin.
“Shut up.” Gavin collects the screws and takes a couple pictures of the area.
In the surveillance room, Minor is skimming through the day’s footage from two cameras in the studio area. Stopping the footage tape at the early hours, both men notice an obscured figure holding a small tool kit, making their way to the stairs. Minor explains, no body is allowed above unless directed. Gavin asks Minor to keep this strictly between the two of them until further can be proved, from what he had seen he perceived; equipment tampering. Gavin was going to have to talk to security and the backstage personnel for answers, starting to believe criminal intent really is at play.
The boys meet Mc back at her office, she’s buried in piles of paperwork and her phone ringing endlessly. Gavin gives her a sympathetic look before knocking, “You busy?”
“Come in! Sorry I have to quickly get some emails sent off and fax some papers off to insurance, hopefully this blows over quickly. I can’t imagine the company can afford a huge insurance pay out, and now the slander is another thing... The internet has been going blitz since a statement was released by the leading actor on Tweeter.” You explain trying to juggle multiple things at once.
Minor was quick to pull out his phone to check the media platforms and sure enough….
The lead actor in the show was huge Hollywood heart throb Chris Hemswart, taking to tweeter this afternoon stating:
‘Today’s events were unfortunate as they were scary, I’m so glad everyone is alright and we get back on tracking with shooting! Big shout out for the Loveland City Police Department for having the actors’ backs!’
Minor showed Gavin silently as to not disturb Mc as she finishes her tasks at hand, the comments under the chirp (a chirp is like a status update) seem to be slandering not only your company but Barner Wors as well. Everyone on board and supporting the actors with best wishes and best of lucks. Minor whispers to Gavin, “Is he allowed to post considering the situation?”
“As long as it doesn’t hinder the investigation or reveal to much information, I have no cause otherwise to say no.” Gavin pulls his phone out and sends a text off to one of the lads back at the department.
- I’m sending you some names of people and companies, get me some-thing to work with:
Chris Hemswart, Nicole Kissman, Barner Wors, xxx xxxxxx, xxxx xxxxxxx, xxxx xxxxxx.
.SEND.
“Sorry guys, right anything found, is everything alright??” Mc puts away the last file in her filing cabinet. Clearly seeing just how much these days have taken a toll on you; Gavin decides to shake his head.
“To early to tell really, I’ll continue my investigation and keep you informed.”
It was the look on Minors face when Gavin said that, which made you unsure Gavin was telling you the truth. You didn’t want to pursue the truth though, perhaps a part of you didn’t really want to know. What you really wanted to do was just curl up under a rock and hide from the world right now. “Well okay then, I have to head over to LFG ill see you guys out, okay?”
Heading out of the building both men decided to see you off to LFG, Minor saying the whole way he’d come up with you and talk to Victor. Gavin seemed to like the idea however clearly pointing out Minors ‘little dog syndrome’ he agreed it was best Minor stayed out of it too. Gavin wanted to come with you though, seeing how Victor was when he arrived made his blood boil. He envisioned himself knocking that stupid look off his face, but considering the reason he was there using his authority was his only weapon.
“Right well, I’ll see you guys... later… then….” Your voice gets smaller and smaller as you stare up the massive building of LFG. Praying that something unfortunate truly was to happen so you’d have an excuse not to enter the building.

Soul and Shield: Chapter 1
Okay, I have seven chapters more or less written and I think I’ve finally settled on the title. Time to start posting this CSI: Citlatl thing, right? :-)
This is the sequel to Clan and Court, in which Watcher Violet, Priest of Eothas, welcomed her enormous clan to Caed Nua just in time to go investigate things in Dyrford. If you haven’t read that yet, start there and meet a few of her siblings who are recurring characters in this sequel. Bonuses in the sequel include: Aloth! Lenneth! (but not as a Watcher) More of Vi’s siblings, including Garivald being the mayor of their city! And plenty of mysteries to solve, Leaden Key to interfere, relationships to navigate, and oh yes, they still have that betrothal contract to deal with, technically.
I’m going to start out posting a chapter every few days, I think, while I keep writing beyond the buffer I have to start with, and see how well I can keep up with that pace. So. More to come soon! Hope you like it!
Chapter 1: Home from the Hunt
Word count: 1.3K
Rating: PG (warning for discussion of a relative who is dying?)
Read it here or on AO3
‘Tis too quiet, Iselmyr complained.
“A little peace and quiet will do us good,” Aloth countered. And it wasn’t like the keep was abandoned. He nodded to an orlan in travel gear quietly departing through Caed Nua’s gate just as Aloth was entering, as if to point out to Iselmyr that the grounds were by no means empty. But his restless soul-passenger had a point: Caed Nua was usually much livelier than this, busy with the doings of the realm that his friend Violet oversaw, even if peace and quiet were generally as much to the Watcher’s liking as to his. The hired help and mercenaries who kept an eye out for trouble around the fortress went about their business today looking more subdued than usual. Perhaps Aloth had just been away too long, remembering a bustling Caed Nua in the early days of Violet’s governance, when everywhere you looked something was being loudly renovated. Perhaps the Watcher’s day-to-day life had simply settled down. After months of adventuring on his own (On our own, Iselmyr objected companionably), he looked forward to seeing his first real friend again and hoped Violet had indeed found peace here.
The guard at the door of the great hall nodded silently in recognition as Aloth passed through and approached the dais. The Steward’s throne was occupied, but he could not read the Watcher’s expression as she sat there, her head lowered, face obscured by her curls. Violet was not alone: four other orlans gathered around her. A girl with her fair hair in numerous thick braids was openly weeping; another golden-haired girl sat on the arm of the throne, linking her arm with Violet’s. On the other side, two males: the curly-haired lad rested one hand on Violet’s shoulder and the other in the fur of a black hound nearly as tall as the orlans. Lastly, a dark-haired orlan man stood a little apart, arms crossed, brows furrowed.
They all looked up at Aloth’s approaching footsteps, and he could see tears glistening in Violet’s eyes. But she brightened at the sight of him, and stood to greet him, brushing the tears from her cheeks as she smiled in welcome. She clasped his hands, whispering, “You’re back. You’re alive. Oh, thank Eothas,” before reaching up to embrace him.
“I seem to have come at a bad time,” Aloth began, but Violet only squeezed him tighter, shaking her head against his chest.
“It’s never a bad time to see you here safe and sound,” she insisted, but not without a lingering sniffle. “I’m sure you must have some exciting stories to tell of your travels?”
Iselmyr was poised with half a dozen such stories, but Aloth bid her wait. “In time, certainly. Is...is everything all right?” he asked weakly, while Iselmyr mentally rolled her eyes because obviously everything wasn’t.
Violet stepped back with a sigh. “Here, yes. We’ve just had some upsetting news from back home.” She glanced around at the other orlans. “Oh. I should introduce you. Everyone, this is Aloth Corfiser.”
“Guessed as much,” the girl sitting on the arm of the throne said with a smirk, standing to step forward and shake his hand. “I’m Audie. Good to see you’re still in one piece, Corfiser.”
“My sister,” Violet explained as Aloth raised an eyebrow at the girl’s grip and boldness.
“You...guessed my name?” he asked.
“Violet has told us about her friends,” Audie said. “You’re an elf, you’re carrying a spellbook, that matches only one description.” Her tone softened as she linked arms again with Violet. “Welcome back. It’s good to have friends near at a time like this.”
He nodded, lost for words, as Violet beckoned the rest of the orlans closer. “Also my sister, Yolotli,” she indicated the girl with the braids, “and my brother, Xipil,” the boy with the dog. “They’re twins, though you might not realize it until they start finishing each other’s sentences. Well, when Lottie starts finishing Xipil’s sentences,” she said, confirmed by giggles and shrugs from the others. “And this is Anselm,” she nodded to the dark-haired male, “my Chief Investigator.”
“Also related?” Aloth asked, and a low round of chuckling amongst the orlans accompanied Violet’s answer.
“Some of my brothers are married to some of his sisters,” she said, grinning, “and that’s as related as we’ll ever be.”
“Right,” said Aloth, mildly confused. “Well, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintances. Violet, if you don’t mind me prying, what’s this about upsetting news?”
Her smile fell. “A courier was just here, from the rest of the family, back in the Ixamitl Plains.” She paused, and then pressed on with a sigh, “Mother is ill.”
“For some time now, it seems,” added Yolotli.
“Uncle Patli has been tending her,” said Violet, “and thinks it won’t --” her voice caught in sniffles -- “she doesn’t have much time left.”
“So he sent word,” Audie finished, somber now. “Mother wants us home. To say our goodbyes.”
“Oh,” Aloth said, voice lowered in respect. “All of you, I presume?”
Violet nodded slowly. “We...we were just talking about what to do. It’s a long journey back to Citlatl, but the Steward can manage Caed Nua in my absence. I’ve been gone for five years....I can’t just stay away while she…”
“Of course you should go,” Aloth encouraged her.
“Aloth,” she said, clasping his hand, “come with us, my friend.”
He frowned, glancing around at her assembled kin. “I...are you sure? If it’s a family matter, perhaps it’s best if I…”
“I haven’t seen you in months,” she reminded him, “and you’d be gone tracking down another Leaden Key cell by the time I get back from this trip. Well, I’m sure you could find a cell to hunt in Ixamitl as well as anywhere. And I want to hear your stories.”
He sighed, resigning himself to returning so soon to the road for his friend’s sake. “Then it would be my honor. We’ll be leaving soon?”
“Well…” Violet hesitated, her ears twitching.
“We can wait for Edér,” Audie spoke up, arms crossed.
“It’s four more days…” Violet said, looking down as she laced her fingers together. “Mother doesn’t have long.”
“He needs to go with us,” Audie persisted.
Anselm spoke up for the first time, “I agree with Audie. You know how it will go, Violet, if you and I return to Citlatl without him.”
“Mother will want to meet him!” Yolotli added.
“And we’ll only travel faster with him along,” Audie said. “Because he’ll make himself useful, and because you’ll be moping if we leave him behind that long, Vi-o-letty.”
Violet raised her hands with a weak laugh. “Fine. I suppose you’re right. Four days, though…” She glanced toward the door. “I’m going to find a messenger to send for him to come sooner than usual.” And with that, she hurried away from the great hall, leaving Aloth glancing in confusion from one orlan to the next as they exchanged knowing grins among themselves.
“Pardon me,” he finally said, “but I’m not sure what just happened. Edér is certainly useful in the sort of trouble we generally found ourselves in when we both traveled with the Watcher, but why would he go with her on this occasion? As I understood it, he was occupied in Dyrford Village these days.”
Audie’s grin grew wider. “They’re courting.”
Had Aloth been in the middle of quenching the thirst of the road at that moment, he would have spewed the drink over the four of them equally as he looked around, wide-eyed. “Wh-what?” he sputtered. “Edér? Violet?” The orlans’ grins and nods confirmed it. Iselmyr, internally, crowed with delight as Aloth struggled to wrap his mind around the thought of --
No. Better not to think of it at all.
