Lately I’ve been trying to write a couple of relatively short episode tags and missing scenes as I rewatch the series. This is a missing scene for Need, to satisfy my ongoing Jack and Daniel brainrot. Nothing much to it - just more self-indulgent crap (which I’m now getting cold feet about posting lol).

We've seen three death moves overall for CR Daggerheart (in addition to this episode, Kexon, Travis's Menagerie character, did one as well) and every single time they've chosen Risk It All and so far they've all made it so I am EXCITED to see more. I do want to talk about multiple issues that can come up with D&D death/resurrection rules and which have, indeed, come up in Critical Role campaigns, which death moves address. I've mentioned a lot of these in scattered posts and comments, but here are the ones I have in mind all in one place.

Not ready to say goodbye to the character. It gives a graceful and easy option for people who don't want to let a beloved PC die - just go unconscious. The scar mechanic in Daggerheart is also great because it becomes more likely with higher levels (scars are if you roll equal to or under your character's level, ie, had Sam or Ashley picked that option, they only had a 1/12 chance to take a scar since they're level 1), so it allows you to ease in or hang on to a low level character for a while.

Less immediate burden on healers (or people with potions). I happen to enjoy the challenge of playing a D&D healer, but it does mean that if you're the cleric and you are perfectly positioned for a devastating Inflict Wounds and someone goes down and rolls a nat 1 death save, suddenly your turn becomes "heal or at least stabilize now or else you're kind of an asshole." The collaborative, turn-based but not specifically ordered battle rules of Daggerheart do a lot to (pun not intended) combat this, but the fact that someone can simply go unconscious and sit out the rest of the fight means it doesn't shift what everyone else does.

No anticlimactic deaths. This is, off topic, a big refutation in my opinion to the "made for actual play" argument (which is itself not a valid argument anyway) but: there is no going out quietly on a third failed death save. Either you stay alive, you canonically go out in a blaze of glory, or there is a literal above table gamble for your life with the odds only slightly in your favor. No slow bleeding out that the DM has to narrate to seem more cool than it is; no five rounds of dread; even if you risk it all and fail, it's one and done.

Less fear of bold moves. Consider: you do have slightly in-your-favor odds to risk it all; and if you win, you may very well end up in better shape than you were before! You probably will, actually, given that you have no hit points left. Because there's an out provided if you really can't say goodbye there's really no reason not to risk it on the battlefield, and also if you're staring down a TPK, one of you risking it all could genuinely turn the tide in your favor. It might be better to go down and hope you get back up than to play it too safe in a battle of attrition.

No critting and immediately falling unconscious again. A crit on a death save is in fact really fucking good in D&D too, but you do have one hit point, so you get your turn, and then you might just go straight back down. A crit in Daggerheart? You're fully back on your feet and better than ever.

You can choose to let a death stand with minimal OOC discussion. On the other hand, if you feel this is a narratively meaningful place to let the character die? You ensure a dramatic and satisfying finale, and you make your definitive exit, without needing to pause an emotional combat scene to provide the other players with, effectively, your character's DNR. The death move you chose (and the fact that it's very hard to resurrect in Daggerheart) does the work for you.

Resurrection never feels cheap. Obviously there's the fact that resurrection is literally extremely difficult to do in Daggerheart, far more so than D&D; but also, if you die via running out of hope slots from multiple times choosing to avoid death, that is something you'd be aware was coming up - rather like how a character with multiple scars in Candela Obscura knows they'll need to retire. You can't stave off death forever, but you'll know when you're running low on hope slots and be able to make peace with it - or decide to meet it head on.

about the weaponized incompetence batsis, thing is what you said is true about them not really that insistent to force reader to the vigilante route because she DOES have a valid reason. Barbara? On a wheelchair. Jason? Tortured, dead, replaced, revived. Steph and Cass? Dead and revived. Happened too many times already to kids under Batman. If anything it's called self-preservation.

I think that honestly the being peeved and possible jealousy is also true. If reader were to be skilled than most YET refuses to join? Boy. Jealousy of her skills, peeved at her indifference.

I can see potential routes to this.

A) Reader still weaponizing her incompetence, while the Batfam has mixed feelings of jealousy, peeved, disappointment yet can't bring themselves to force her because she is right! Girly just wants to remain alive.

B) If reader is petty as fuck, going foul aka bringing up the deaths and failures of her siblings during an argument with batfam, telling him that he got blood on his hands.

C) Somehow ending up as a vigilante but again, a petty as fuck one. REFUSES to be associated with the batfam, even having a really different aesthetic and working separately. Either kill like Jason OR do everything bad minus killing to the enemy to spite Batman.

For an interesting plot, if you were to write it, i'd say go with the kids being upset/jealous with the reader thus thrusting her into the line of fights with them. They want her to be side by side with them. Patrol is not always about crime fighting because some nights nothing happens. It's a bonding moment. They rooftop hop and act silly, they want you there with them. They feel like you don't want to be there with them...it's hurtful. They bug Bruce about it to get him to force you into it but he allows you to choose. They might be pissed because they didn't really get a choice. You're going to be here with your siblings.

Maybe they don't fully understand your worry because all of them will obviously protect you. Especially the older ones in the group. You'll be fine. You don't get to be miss perfect, Bad things happen and you don't get to escape that out of fear.

I personally would say C option. Perfect example of weaponized incompetence . Jason would be loving you so much. Ya'll would be amazing together and everyone else is like...maybe don't be so brutal?? they'd try to split you up and explain what you are doing wrong. Doesn't work obvi and you are back to being a menace with Jay.

Bruce would intervene and maybe threaten you with going back to your moms. Or maybe he'd force you to stay back like you wanted...Who knows.

As someone who agrees with a decent amount of the pre-war Decepticon party’s views in certain continuities, some of y’all new fans are starting to piss me off with your belief that D-16 was correct in Transformers One. As someone who does a lot of community organizing and writes on sociopolitical theory vs. practice, especially within the context of the anti-colonial struggle (as well as the Black struggle simultaneously or separately depending on the context), a lot of the reasons you all choose to support D-16 and diss on Orion are actually obscene and you need to crack open a book. I normally don’t like shoving theory in people’s faces, as I think that it comes with a pedantic demeanor that relies on belittling people and feeding a moral superiority complex amongst academics. However, this is one of the cases where I think a lot of people truly need to take the time to read into why D-16’s emotions and initial reactions are valid, but the decisions he makes in providing solutions are wrong. That being said, I will be writing a paper on D-16’s fall from grace in conversation with Paulo Freire’s “Pedagogy of the Oppressed,” because a lot of the ways in which Freire discusses how the oppressed become their oppressors in the name of liberation, which is no fault of their own in some areas, is relevant to D-16’s transformation into Megatron. A lot of you are thinking with a more pathos-based means of societal change without thinking about realism, practicality, and actually analyzing D-16’s character and why he does what he does. It is more so an attempt at self-preservation and closure from embarrassment (specifically from taking the bait and living as a conformist) than an actual attempt at political change. I also encourage new fans to get more acquainted with Transformers continuities to better round their perspectives, as a lot of this is turning into the “Killmonger was right” discourse, which is problematic for a lot of reasons as a Black scholar who discusses Blackness, representation, and political discourse often in their writing. Seeing these really bad takes spread online, not only hurts how people interact with Transformers media in the future, but arguably indicates a rise of certain short-sighted political philosophies that translate directly into activism.

Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?

I'd say he's one of the more kinder lovers, as previously stated from above. He doesn't take away your freedom, and doesn't find the need to break you in just to feel an ounce of your love. For him, to achieve something you've always wanted, you have to work for it. Just like a well-carved wooden bowl, spun from gentle yet scuffed hands, Mathieu is a careful guy. He chooses his words for all the rare times he's spoken to you, and he often holds back on his anger before fully exploding. Unlike Oliver or Luciano who can be easily triggered by personal attacks, Mathieu knows your threats are valid, sometimes weaponized against his insecurities— but he'll never let the anger consume him, never use you as an outlet for his destructive behavior; that's where hunting down poachers and smoking outside your home comes into play.

He also takes the one of the longest time to let both yourselves be fully acclimated to physical attention. He's aware that, again, romance is earned. And it's not like he's also used to close contact, skin to skin affection. Though thoughts may fester - he wants to hold you, feel your breath prickling against the fuzz of his chin, know what it's like to fully entangle your legs together - he doesn't force it upon you, doesn't pressure you to submit to the standards of what a couple should do because everything about you two is an unconventional romance. He'll hold off for as long as you can imagine, and will only touch you if you give him the go signal, if it's you who approaches him with the intentions of wanting to be held. Otherwise, he'll simply play a fantasy of what it's like every night. some character study on D-16/Megatron

I love, love, love that TF One's D-16 even before Sentinel's reveal is so completely inundated with violence; he's forced to work a dangerous job- so dangerous the SOP is to leave trapped and injured bots behind with no hope of rescue-- with the threat of demotion to even worse things hanging overhead, his superiors can strike him without any consequence, and D-16 accepts this as how the world is. He tells Orion that Darkwing was right to strike him because he was talking back, that's just how it works.

and finding out that his lot in life was just a bad draw, that he happened to be among those who were stripped of cogs and made to be slaves? his only world view forces him to see the violence he's endured as the only acceptable penance.

and every moment after the reveal, he's only made more secure in this world view.

Starscream says he's going to kill all of them, that raw superiority of power is the only measure that matters- and D-16 meets that challenge. Starscream and the high guard! the very cybertronians who were meant to protect the Primes, these people who should represent the "good" version of Cybertron- the Cybertron before Sentinel's betrayal. They're fighting Sentinel, they're the good guys and yet they, too, use violence as their core language.

Sometimes he calls himself an 'it' or a 'thing', too even though he knows he hates that. Do you feel that way when they call you a she? He'll just go ahead and start banning those people for you both, he doesn't like them anyway.

• He isn't comfortable in his own body anymore either. He didn't choose what he is now the same way you didn't choose what you were born as

• Sometimes, his body doesn't fit right, either. He hates that he understands that feeling, but he does...

• He's starting to get comfortable with that familiarity, and with maybe not feeling so alone

• Is it wrong of him to enjoy having found someone he can relate to? If even just a little?

• Sebastian knows it's probably awful of him, but he's making a point to be good to you for it

• It makes himself feel better for a while when you can connect like that so naturally...

Daggerheart Death Moves in action

this is in reference to this post I made - now that we've seen a few more death moves, and much more combat, I want to talk through it a little bit more!

Skreev in this episode is a great example of "not wanting to say goodbye to the character yet," and specifically a great example of a player who is generally very open to PC death picking this option. I want to be clear that as someone who is very open about being pro-character death, wishes C3 had actually been deadly, greatly dislikes Vax being brought back, likes that Molly's death remained permanent, enjoyed Candela and Calamity's PC death ratios given the genres they're in, etc etc, I am staunchly against the idea that the Avoid Death option is an easy way out. It can be - any choice in a TTRPG can be, while we're at it; but no one is forcing a player to take it. The fact is Skreev has been around for barely a full episode at this point, and his death wouldn't be interesting nor hold much weight, so Liam picks it. Additionally, while Skreev is out for quite a while, he actually participates in the fight about as much as Snyx, who's conscious the whole time! By my count, in a fight with 7 PCs and 3 enemies, he is unconscious for 9 action rolls; this would not be unusual for D&D combat.

August rolls, which is the correct move as this is very much his fight - as Taliesin says, he can't be unconscious for this. It's all or nothing, and it works in his favor, with him coming back from the brink to face his greatest personal enemy, but if he died, it would be at the hands of his own backstory, which would, unlike with Skreev, be fitting. I think had this come later in the game, Blaze of Glory would have also worked (and Taliesin would be open to choosing it) but at this point in the game, in a miniseries, allowing the dice to decide if he dies here or continues feels better than a definitive end.

Misty goes unconscious both times. I don't think this is the only valid option, but I also don't think it's a problem. It's not her climactic fight, and it's in a campaign where her death would signal her being gone forever. I think if this came midway through a longer-term game, blaze of glory or rolling for it would have felt better given her connection to August, but I don't feel like her dying nor coming back from the brink dramatically is narratively necessary here. She also, as we learn in Cooldown (and which will be played out next episode - the cast forgot), obtains a scar, which does have mechnical and narrative significance. The scar mechanic is important; going unconscious is not something you can do indefinitely.

More generally: I think Daggerheart does an excellent job of eliminating some of the most bogged-down or narratively unsatisfying elements of D&D (another example is that you can do max four HP damage per attack, leading to tighter combat and fewer endless slogs of Number Go Down). The fact is, death itself can end up feeling cheap or narratively unsatisfying in D&D in a resurrection heavy campaign.

@essektheylyss mentioned in a reply on another post that Daggerheart combat doesn't force quite as rigid circumstances for players to react to given open initiative, with an example of the combat in 2x98 (Fjord's assassination) being driven by the circumstances of initiative order. I agree - I think there's plenty of cases where D&D mechanics led to a unique emergent narrative that would not occur in Daggerheart. However, I also believe the reverse is true: it's not absurd to consider that in D&D, August might have been healed a few HP, and fallen down again, and spent the entire fight in an unconscious-to-few HP cycle unable to do much else than drink healing potions. Skreev might have died first thing - or, given the increased urgency to heal multiple fallen party members, might have remained unconscious but stabilized thanks to a magic item or Spare the Dying. I think Daggerheart provides much more narrative control the players surrounding matters of character death, and I think that is a good thing. Players can make uninteresting choices (though I don't think this was the case in this episode); but that is true of any TTRPG.

Ok, but you know what I noticed?

The meaning of "deviating" kinda switches a little when it comes to Connor.

With both Kara and Markus, deviating is portrayed as 'making the decision to obey or disobey their orders'; in a way, deviating is basically developping a free will regardless of what the android chooses to do with it after. That means that Kara can still stay in that spot and not move, and Markus can still decide to listen to Carl and not defend himself against Leo after they become deviants.

So why can't Connor deviate and still decide to obey and finish his mission by capturing Markus? It's not... impossible for a living being with a free will to make a fucked up decision. It's not impossible for a brainwashed individual to turn against their own people.

Of course, it doesn't make that much sense to deviate if he doesn't wanna disobey, but it doesn't for Markus either, imo. I admit that it's a 50/50 with Kara as she can deviate and still "decide" to obey Todd only if you don't do anything which is just the default and not an actual action by the player.

But Markus does feel like he is being treated unfairly by Leo and Carl, he feels it's too much and that he needs to decide for himself how to react, so him enduring being pushed around after deviating doesn't necessarily make a lot more sense than Connor deviating and still capturing Markus.

Maybe Markus decides to endure because he sees that Carl is suffering a heart attack and misjudges the situation by believing that defending himself is more likely to lead to Carl's death because it would stress the man out. That's a valid response.

On the other hand, it would also be valid for Connor to try to capture Markus after deviating if he believes that's the better choice - Jericho is about to be attacked, and he already told Hank that he believes the deviant uprising will cause chaos. And moreover, Connor went there looking for answers and for "himself", as Lucy says. There is enough conflict in him to make him deviate just so he can know for sure who he is and where he wants to stand, without actually abandoning his mission before he finds these answers. He basically tells Hank he will find out whether or not they are on the wrong side before he leaves for Jericho and deviates - he is already torn before meeting Markus.

You know what I'm saying? The whole "become a deviant" vs. "remain a machine" dialog before the red walls could have just been replaced by an alternative dialog, which could appear after he breaks the red walls and goes like "join Markus" vs. "stay loyal to Cyberlife".

Ultimately, I don't know if that would have been better, tbh, but it would have been more consistent. The way it is now feels like with Kara and Markus, deviating means "making the conscious decision to obey or disobey", but with Connor, deviating suddenly means just "disobey".

And must deviants be good people? Must they be on the right side if it benefits them more to be on the wrong side? If they are anything like humans, at least 10% of them would have betrayed Markus, hoping to get immunity from Cyberlife (ofc it would have backfired, but well, that's anothet topic).

Anyway, please, feel free to discuss and prove me wrong, I don't claim to have understood everything about the game yet :D And I love discussions!

But I still don't understand intersex. Google says it's when someone doesn't align with the family or make binaries but would t that just be nonbinary??

Okay so I'm putting a warning here that I'm going to refer to anatomical parts, but this isn't a sexual discussion, if that makes sense.. also I'm not a doctor, so if I get anything wrong, please feel free to correct me, tumblr! Also, please know that I'm going to refer to 'biology' which can quickly get sticky and turned into terf ideology, but remember that all trans identities are valid and important!

Okay so nonbinary is a gender identity. It has nothing to do with biological body parts (or chromosomes), because gender isn't tied to biological body parts. People who have testosterone and testes, for example, can identify as (and BE) girls, and vice verse. Similarly, anyone can be nonbinary, regardless of what body parts they have. Nonbinary is basically anyone who identifies as a gender outside of 'boy' or 'girl.'

Biological sex, on the other hand, is tied to body parts. Many people aren't taught this, but there are actually THREE biological sexes- male, female, and intersex. (I made an edit below to correct this) Males are usually defined as people with XY chromosomes who have testosterone, testes, etc. Females are usually defined as people with XX chromosomes who have estrogen, ovaries, etc. HOWEVER, there is a percentage of the population that BIOLOGICALLY is a mixture of both. Some people can be born, for example, with testes AND ovaries. Others could be born with XY chromosomes, but also ovaries. Many people now consider Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (a condition where the ovaries develop cysts) to be a form of being intersex, because people with this condition are usually assigned female at birth, but they produce higher-than-normal amounts of testosterone, and also tend to have more masculine features, such as body or facial hair.

The long and short of it is, being nonbinary is something you feel, and anyone could be nonbinary, depending on how they identify. Being intersex is a biological medical condition.

If you want to learn more about being intersex, there's a really interesting and morose history there. Many intersex people are mutilated at birth and forced to grow up as a gender of their parents' choosing, and being intersex is only recently becoming more accepted as being valid and not 'weird.' It's great you want to know more about it, people should know about it!

A Submissive Origin Story

Most of the time when people ask what made me submissive, I shrug and say it’s just who I am. I don’t believe that submission inherently comes from somewhere; sometimes it’s just who we are.

But lately I’ve been working through a lot, trying to get to a mentally healthier version of myself. I’ve been thinking about the high expectations placed on me as a child and the stressful environment around me. My dad in particular was emotionally unpredictable. He could come home in a great mood, then lecture us for an hour over some small turn of phrase he didn’t like. And as the eldest daughter (yes yes, I fulfill ALL the stereotypes), he was particularly hard on me. I remember in 2nd grade, I brought home a spelling test and was proud that I got a 99%. My dad lectured me for more than half an hour about how I can do better. This is one example of many. A few years ago, my dad told me, “I never had to spank you or anything. I learned early on with you that all I had to do was make you feel like a disappointment. That always worked. And look how successful you are now.” His intentional parenting philosophy was to cause me psychological pain. Thanks, Dad.

And listen, I know it’s all fucked up. I know he was wrong to do all that. That’s why I parent very differently, and why I chose people to coparent with me who would parent differently. But it did shape me. It still does. All of this made me a person who can read people really well and take the perspectives of others. I know what people want and how to cater to their feelings, because I had to. It made me a more effective communicator because I always needed to choose my words carefully before I opened my mouth. It made me an overachiever—yes, very successful, but also someone who feels I have to work twice as hard as a normal person to have a chance at being good enough. Someone who thinks giving 100% means giving until I legitimately can’t anymore. Someone who needs clarity and validation, because I starved for it with him.

Lately I’ve been processing all this and also working through a present day set of issues with my dad. So all of this has been very much on the surface.

Then a few weeks ago, I was getting ready for bed one night, and it was very clear Monsieur wanted sex. Had been thinking about sex all day. Had the toys all laid out. And my brain was just…not there. But I didn’t say no. Didn’t even tell him where my head was at. And unsurprisingly, things didn’t go well for either of us. I was thinking about it after, and I had this epiphany.

I didn’t say no because some part of me deep down believes that if I say no, he won’t love me anymore.

In my conscious mind, I don’t believe that at all. Monsieur is one of the most unconditionally loving people I’ve ever been with. But what I realized is, no matter how many good things I do as a partner, I feel like all of that gets washed away by one wrong step. Because that’s what has happened in the past. Perfection is the minimum standard.

It got me thinking that maybe this is why I find such comfort in a D/s relationship. I know exactly what the parameters are and what it looks like to be a good partner. The rules and expectations are explicit, and the feedback is clear. Do good girl things, get good girl head pats. Basically, I know exactly what it takes to get an A+ in my relationship, which is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

It also made me wonder if this is part of why I haven’t been feeling as submissive lately. I have a partner who truly sees me—all of me—and accepts me. He loves me not in spite of my quirks, but because of them. And every time I get down on myself because I didn’t do XYZ and I don’t feel good enough, he tells me what a wonderful partner I am and recounts all the good stuff I bring to his life. Clarity and validation. Unconditional love. And maybe it’s because I’m so confident in his love that I can finally stop forcing myself to push through when it’s not good for me.

There have certainly been times in the past when I have pushed myself to submit to a Dominant when it wasn’t good or comfortable for me. I prided myself on being able to give even when I had nothing left. And I often got the good girl pats and validation, which made it all feel worth it. But the validation didn’t replenish me; it just made being empty feel a little less bad.

I don’t say all of this to make D/s seem dysfunctional or inherently bad in some way. I know many people in healthy D/s relationships. And I don’t actually think that my submission is just a product of all this insecurity and need for validation; I’ve had submissive feelings for as long as I can remember.

But I do think my past has shaped the kinds of D/s I pursue and how I conduct myself in those dynamics. For example, it shapes my difficulty safewording because I don’t want to be a disappointment. Even though my partner has done nothing but praise me when I safeword. Even though I’ve seen the negative consequences of my failure to safeword when I should have.

So here’s where I’m at with all of this: I need to understand where my submission comes from a dysfunctional place so I can move forward to build a healthy, soul-nourishing dynamic with my partner. I’m not sure what it looks like yet, but I do believe it’s possible.
