A list of (almost) everything MatPat got wrong about GenLoss:
"Generation Loss is an ARG." Generation Loss is actually quite transparent about not being an ARG. It has elements similar to an ARG, such as audience interaction, but there is a clear barrier between the story/characters and real life. One of the defining features of an ARG is the lack of this barrier.
"Ranboo is the Founder and orchestrated the entire show from start to finish."
"The teasers ask the audience to kill the Founder, and the finale ends with the audience voting to kill Ranboo, implying they are the same person." It was heavily foreshadowed that there are many generations to come, and also confirmed by cc!Ranboo several times. Killing the Founder in Generation 1 wouldn't make sense. That, and just because Ranboo died doesn't automatically prove that he's the Founder.
"Ranboo always makes choices that keep the performance on track." He is being controlled to do so. One of the very first details you can possibly notice in the series is that when the mask comes on, Ranboo is not in control of his actions.
"Ranboo doesn't participate in searching [in ep 2]." The Showfall announcement on twitter says that interactive elements are limited on episode 2, giving Ranboo no commands or agency of his own to actually help other than the limited audience polls. also the mask was reset in episode 2, placing him under even stricter control.
"Ranboo knows what is happening and will do anything to keep the show going." Since the very beginning teasers, Ranboo has been labeled The Hero. This name alone makes it obvious that Showfall has intended for Ranboo to be the protagonist, and thus the one that makes it to the end. Again, he's under control- even if he knows what's going to happen, none of his reactions or choices were truly his.
"Ranboo locked Sneeg in the basement, that's how he knows Sneeg was there for 6 months." There's no evidence that Sneeg actually was there for 6 months, given that the cabin is canonically just a set that they use. All we have to go on for this is a throwaway line (which GenLoss is full of throwaway lines). And Ranboo somehow "knowing" how long Sneeg was there isn't a direct implication of guilt, again considering that it's the set of a show.
"The Puzzler is scared of Ranboo." The Puzzler is the Bad-At-Being-A-Villain archetype. Him going "woops sorry" when he almost accidentally kills Ranboo is not him being "scared" of Ranboo. It's him being the goofy villain that Showfall wrote him to be. (Sidenote: Interesting that Matpat was implying that Jerma may have flubbed some lines, when the entire point of his character was to be as incompetent as possible. Saying the wrong thing was kind of... the point of the character.)
"Ranboo believes he is doing everything to help humanity." Yeah he lost me there. I don't even know what that's supposed to mean.
"Ranboo's death was staged" I'll give this one the benefit of the doubt. He may not have actually died, or he may have been brought back, but it's not because he was actually the one behind it all.
"The cooking show cutaways prove that Ranboo is still alive." The cooking show cutaways are obviously prerecorded, even in-universe. You have to consider that even in-universe this is still a live show. They would've had to have been prerecorded anyway. Even if these cutaways had been filmed after the fact for a prerecorded show, the cutaways still could've been recorded between episodes, as canonically there was a day in between each episode (where it's implied that characters go into an idle state).
Using cc!Ranboo's explaination about the rerecorded/remastered aspects of the Founder's Cut as evidence that gl!Ranboo is manipulating the footage. This would be a very interesting take on the idea and definition of Generation Loss as a concept, however cc!Ranboo has stated many times before that the Founder's Cut is solely to get past the limitations of the live setting. It also would not make sense that gl!Ranboo would be the one manipulating the footage, but we're too deep down the "Ranboo Is The Founder" rabbit hole to talk about that.
"The Founder's Cut will replace the original VODs, slowly changing the details until a distorted copy is left." Again, cool concept. But Ranboo has already confirmed that this is not the direction that the series is going. The VODs will still be up and the Founder's Cut is not meant to replace them, just make them easier to watch.
Conclusion: MatPat focuses too much on throwaway lines, in-universe jokes, and whiteboards, and ignores blatant visual clues such as the mask, morse code, and... just about everything really... for 16 minutes.

This was originally going to be a really angry post where I talked about bad faith criticisms of htfasj and vagued about the veiled entitlement of people who mock my story and went in-depth into debunking some criticisms of me that made me particularly upset with their contradiction and horrible implications. Then I wrote this last part and I realized that it was much more important than getting back at people who upset me. So I decided to delete all that and focus on this.
If you're in the Genloss fandom, particularly in relation to TSE, you've probably heard about or read "How to Fail at Ship Jumping" and seen the fandom's aftermath.
I've heard that some people have changed their headcanons to not align with mine and some are afraid to make their own AUs because of what happened with htfasj, and that really sucks.
Honestly, I think that htfasj showed that his fandom has underlying issues and my story is being made an example out of. People feel that Ranboo is too talked about and are frustrated that the side characters don't get more love. People are sick of every other fanfiction just being an escape AU instead of something unique. While at the same time showing that a portion of this fandom thinks they're superior for not liking popular things (the irony of them following streamers with thousands of fans across the globe apparently lost on them) As angry as I am that fast is being made into bloodsports for kids who feel they are entitled to my time and attention, (and make no mistake, that is exactly what my vocal critics are mad about) it's not exactly going against the grain where it matters. It's probably controversial as it is because it's so inoffensive.
I'm planning on soft-quitting Tumblr. After breaking my phone and not being able to check the app for two weeks I realized that I was in a healthier headspace without it. I'm not deleting my accounts because my comic still has people who love it and I don't want people to lose it. But I don't enjoy being in the Genloss fandom anymore because now I constantly fear that there are people who hate me for just having fun or people who like me who are being excluded from parts of the fandom because of my controversy.
So before I leave, I want to say something.
If How to Fail at Ship Jumping frustrates you, make your own version of it that you like better. Or make a completely unique AU that holds all of the things that you love! I don't want the comic that I made because Ranboo's story inspired me to be the "arbiter of Genloss fandom's destruction" I want it to inspire people the way it inspired me to finally get started on my own webcomic.
Be it out of spite or out of love, I want htfasj to make you make something for this fandom that you love and that other people love. I want you to do something fun and unique that makes you happy and scream with joy! I want you to have a subsection of the Genloss fanbase obsessing over your versions of the characters and asking you a million little questions in your ask box and on Discord! I made htfasj because I wanted to do something fun for myself that others could participate in. I don't want to ruin other people's opportunity to do that.
I'll hop back in to squeal about The Founder's Cut next Saturday, but that's probably the most Genloss stuff you'll get from me for a while. I just hope that this fandom will be in a better state by then and we can all have fun talking about this horror series and making it our own with our fan fiction and fan art and AUs like we should have been.
Also publicly hating on other people's fanfictions and Fan art for the sake of complaining instead of trying to help the creator improve is considered bad fandom etiquette, even popular ones. I don't care if you don't @ me, you're still the one being rude.

genloss brainrot is back
I just love how Showfall sees their protagonists. They aren’t actual people, they’re characters playing a part without even knowing it. They’re unwittingly participating—maybe even competing—for the ability to keep the role forever. They’re motivated by the illusion that they can escape, that they can finally be free, that they can just get out and try to forget everything.
They get to forget, but not escape. And as soon as they feel safe and for the first time (as far as they can remember), as soon as they take what they believe to be the final bow, they’re brought right back into it. The final test where they can see whether this character can be the Hero that will keep their audience entertained forever. They’ll find someone relatable, give us the choice to make us also think we’re saving them, and once they’ve ensured that this protagonist “works,” they keep them.
GL!Ranboo was Showfall’s perfect candidate. He was someone we admired, who we loved, who we could even relate to. They exemplified what Showfall wanted out of a protagonist, so after their show finished, they took Ranboo and kept them forever. The reason? Showfall doesn’t seem to understand death, or even the concept of mortality. Sure, a character might “die.” But their actor will always play a part. As long as there are people to watch, Showfall is there to provide. We see that with Slime and Charlie. Slimecicle dies, and Charlie is introduced later. Completely different characters, same actor. Even if he thinks he’s himself, all he’s doing is playing a character.
I personally believe that Charlie used to be the protagonist in a different show. And after passing Showfall’s “test,” he then became an actor they’d use for a variety of shows until the audience stops loving him.
And now they’re not only doing the same thing with Ranboo, but they’re doing it well.
After all, the show must go on.

Still Feel - Generation Loss
After the events of Generation Loss, you'd think The Hero would have finally passed on and been set free from their torment, letting Showfall hungrily search for more entertainment. However, by some miracle, the box doesn't kill him, at least not yet...
Word count: 1199
Also up on ao3, being turned into a full fic.
CW/TW// Graphic depictions of violence, major character death, blood, extreme injury, described gore, and ofc GenLoss Spoilers
The screaming stopped as the box slammed shut around Ranboo's head. Immediately, a rush of heat covered their face alongside an agonizing pain.
Pain. Something real, something tangible they could hold onto. Hetch's voice had long quieted, but the nearly crucified boy remained where he was, too exhausted to try and break free anymore, just waiting on the relief they hoped death would bring. Their breaths were shallow as what they could only assume to be blood dripped down their neck. The raw taste of iron filled their mouth, but even that gave them something to focus on other than the burning zones of his face.
After what felt like an eternity, the sound of footsteps drew close, though not the mechanically synced steps of the employees of Showfall, they were nearly frantic. Two could easily be made out, as well as a voice.
"They have to be this way, this is where they took them, I know!" The voice of Charlie shook as it drew closer, only for a small sob to push its way from him. Though he couldn't even eb sure that what he was hearing was real, Ranboo tried to focus on his friend's voice, just praying that the second set of footsteps would be a police officer or EMT. "He's gotta be hurt, please-" The voice sounded closer now.
"Charlie- Charlie wait-" Both footsteps stopped. Sneeg. "Look at me for a second. What are you gonna do if we get here and they're..?"
A sniffle could barely be made out before Charlie spoke again. "He's not! He can't be! If we keep going, we're gonna find him, Sneeg!" He insisted, one set of footsteps starting back up again. "The longer we wait, the more likely that is, so please, for the love of god move!" He pleaded, and, after a moment, both erratic sets of footsteps picked back up.
Ranboo drew in a breath and tried to yell, but the pain that coursed through his entire face stopped him before he was able to push sound out. They weakly kicked back at the wall they were attached to, hoping to make some sound that could draw the others to him. A dull tapping noise was all that came from it. Finally, the footsteps stopped and a hand found his before the wires around that wrist began to loosen and burn his skin. They fell forward a bit, completely unable to hold themself up.
"Sneeg, help me!" Charlie's voice shook as he pushed up Ranboo's shoulder and tried to loosen the other wrist.
"Charlie, he's gone," Sneeg said quietly. "He probably bled out an hour ago, there's no way he survived whatever this is."
"You don't know that! Now shut up and help me get him down!" Charlie had begun to cry, if he hadn't been already. Ranboo tried to lean back or do anything they could to help or show that they were alive, though it wasn't much.
Pushing past everything their body was screaming at them, they forced an "I'm alive" past their surely destroyed lips. Immediately, a second pair of hands helped to hold him up while the other freed him. He was gently lowered to the ground and laid on his back. They let out a pained whine as the spikes within the box slowly slid from the perforations they had made in his face.
An odd squeaking sound came from the outside of the box, as though one of the two men were trying to pry it open. "Ranboo, how do we get this thing open?" The awful sound continued for a moment as Charlie pried at it.
"Don't know," They managed out. Their head was lifted a bit as Charlie tried to open it from underneath. Though Ranboo couldn't see it, the box opened just enough for his friends to wrench it open after a few attempts.
"Holy shit-" Sneeg let out quietly upon seeing both the damage and the contraption. "We have to get you out of here, fast" Now Sneeg's voice shook, a welcome break from the apathetic tone they had been acquainted with thus far. They were hoisted up quickly and had their arms draped over either of his friends' shoulders. Each took a hand and tried to stabilize him.
"We're gonna get you out of here, Ranboo," Charlie spoke through his own tears. "We're all gonna get out." He spoke less as though he believed it and moreso like he was trying to comfort the young man dying between them. Tears flowed freely from their now useless eyes, stinging as they rolled down his bloody face. He could only imagine the state his friends must be in.
-----
By some miracle, they had made it. The warmth of the sun bathed all three in its divine graces and both of Ranboo's friends had let out a cry of relief- no, of triumph. It wasn't long before they found help and were swarmed my the wailing of ambulances. The awful sound hurt Ranboo's ears tremendously, but at least they were free. Really, truly free. They strapped him down onto a stretcher and loaded him up, though Charlie's begging to go with him now mixed with all the sounds swirling around Ranboo and making him feel a bit ill. They must have relented and let Charlie come along, as he spoke to Ranboo the whole time he was being patched up. He explained what he could see, and what little he knew from the police so far. Apparently, by the time they got there, the mall was completely empty, save for a small memorial to the Puzzler and the control room.
Charlie and Sneeg were in much better condition than he was. Charlie needed a few sets of stitches from Security but Sneeg has come out mostly unscathed. Both paid him visits whenever they were allowed, which Ranboo appreciated greatly. They had entirely lost their vision as their eyes were too damaged to be saved and most of their sense of smell was gone too. After a few emergency surgeries, they had him able to speak and eat properly again for the most part. After an eternity in the hospital, they discharged Ranboo. Through a series of elaborate lies, Charlie and Sneeg convinced the hospital staff they were brothers and had brought him back to a cabin they had been fixing up when they couldn't be with Ranboo.
It was only a few weeks before what the hospital had said began to come true. Though they refused to tell Ranboo, there was really no way he was going to live too long outside of constant care. Charlie and Sneeg tried their best, of course, but sickness and the severity of his injuries had taken its hold and the boy was dying. At night, he spoke to himself in hushed whispers, and every morning woke up in a cold sweat. Until one day, he didn't.
It hit Charlie much harder than it hit Sneeg. Though both men were heavily affected, their home felt so much emptier without the friend they had come to know as their brother. Both took some comfort in knowing that finally his pain had ceased.

Sid's GenLoss thoughts, or, how Vinny is the key to all this
gif by hackerling
As I mentioned in my last post, I really don't know who anyone in GenLoss is outside of Jerma and Vinny. But I was immediately invested when I saw it was filled with lore.
I haven't seen too many people talk about gl!Vinny, so I figured I'd make my contribution by talking him in particular. (Spoilers, obviously.)
The carousel.
Vinny is an outlier in episode 2, both in his actions and how others react to him. We see this as soon as Ranboo first enters the carousel room. While there is urgency in Vinny's voice, he doesn't seem nearly as panicked as the others. Compare and contrast how everyone else acts while the carousel is turning:
To how Vinny acts:
For most of the carousel sequence, Vinny is quiet and distant. He doesn't address or even look at the camera when he passes by it on the carousel. The most we get after Ranboo first arrives is as he leaves, but in both instances Vinny's shouts are almost half-hearted.
Then there's his introduction.
youtube
The title on this clip upload is inaccurate. Unlike all the others, Vinny makes no attempt to beg for his life. He doesn't beg to be freed or try to escape. Vinny just tells us he's useful because he's a hoarder and spends the rest of the time listing the things he's hoarded. Even after becoming 'the taken', Sneeg still mentioned that looks forward to the chance of staying alive.
But Vinny doesn't do any of that, nor does he does it appear that he wants to. He just wants to talk about something else. Plug and plays. Wooden ducks. Anything other than surviving and escaping.
Vinny doesn't speak much while chat solves the pipe puzzle, but there is one thing he says that stands out: "I welcome death at this point."
Vinny's reaction to death, and the candy room.
As Vinny climbs out of the tunnel and stands up, he pauses and looks at Niki's body.
See clip here.
Although he's not as animated or dramatic as the others, Vinny is clearly shocked that she's dead. He questions why Ranboo and Sneeg are so focused on candy and Mouse Trap while Niki is dead on the floor. Of course, both Ranboo and Sneeg have been heavily brainwashed at this point, while Vinny likely hasn't. Curiously, after they brush off Niki's body, Vinny seems to brush it off too. While it may be that self-awareness only comes in bits and spirts, I think it's more likely (as we'll see later on) that Vinny was still aware and decided it was best to play along.
The other two moments in the candy room are interesting as well. Vinny takes Sneeg's suggestion and tastes a piece of candy, only to spit it out with disgust. "You're eating this stuff?" As others have pointed out, the candy is definitely not candy, but we don't know what it really is. All we know is that it didn't taste good.
And finally, Vinny makes one more comment before they leave the candy room: "What am I even doing in here?" To which, Ranboo can't give an answer.
From this point on, I'm going to skip ahead to Vinny's death and work my way backwards.
Reaction to Vinny's Death, and the laser room.
One of the few times we see Ranboo and Sneeg react to what's happening around them is moments before Vinny's dummy hits the ceiling.
It's curious that they have such a strong reaction. They did nothing as Niki screamed for help and let her die. When Ethan dies later on, they give no reaction. And Ranboo simply moves on when Austin and Sneeg are crushed to death.
But here they are, screaming at him hitting the ceiling. And when Vinny dies, they flinch at the sight. It was a subdued reaction, yes, but it was more than could be said for the others, except for maybe Slimetowel. Even afterwards, when they pass by Vinny's body, they're still uncomfortable by the sight.
Whatever really happened to Vinny was so shocking that pierced through all of their mind-control and scared them.
(By the way, this doesn't quite tie into the bigger theory I'm getting at here, I just thought it was interesting.)
"Goddamnit."
Out of all the on-screen deaths, Vinny is the calmest about his.
Niki cries after she's shot and completely breaks down before being shot again. Ethan screams at whatever it is that happened to him behind the fake wall. Austin and even Sneeg scream as they're crushed by the wall.
But Vinny? Sure, he does yell as he flies through the air and hits his head against the ceiling, but it hardly compares to the sheer horror the others experienced. When he realizes that he's about to die, all he does is lean his head back, says "Goddamnit", and lets the comically tiny anvil crush his head.
If anything, Ranboo and Sneeg have more of a reaction than Vinny does. Vinny is resigned and accepts his fate. Hell, he smiles just before they throw him. And those things he said before: "I welcome death at this point." "What am I even doing in here?"
How is Vinny so apathetic to what's happening without being forced to? Well…
"Guys, don't worry about it. I got this. I've done it before."
youtube
When presented with the laser room, Ranboo and Sneeg are at a loss (haha) on how to solve the puzzle. Vinny confidently tells them he's done it before. Ranboo tries to ask what he means by that, but Vinny doesn't elaborate and simply tells them that they need to throw him across the room. (I'll be fully honest, the reason I think that line is important and intentional is because it sounded like he was reciting a script word for word rather than him naturally speaking LOL)
He might be implying that this has happened during one of his funny stories like whatever happened at the wooden duck factory…but I think it's a lot more literal than that.
Repetition is a theme in GenLoss. In fact, it's what 'generation loss' means in the first place: repetition until degradation. Several people seem to have gone through trials before they happen, such as Slimesicle having a part of the Mouse Trap puzzle inside his 'slime.' And wait…didn't Slimesicle and Sneeg die on Day 1?
Everyone being held captive by Showfall has done this before. They've been trapped, put through puzzles, failed to escape, and died.
For whatever reason, Vinny remembers this. He knows the puzzles' solutions. He knows when he's not supposed to be on-screen. He knows that they've failed to escape before, and he's just biding his time until his next death.
But what if he's just being mind-controlled the way Sneeg is, you ask? He's not. Things aren't completely censored for him. He was shocked when he saw Niki dead. He found the not-candy to be revolting. He's still aware of the horrors going on around him. He's just desensitized because he's gone through it before, and he'll probably go through it again.
For a brief moment, however, something different happened. He got through the lasers farther than he ever has before. It's different than before. He smiles. "I made it!"
"Goddamnit."

subjecting the bestie to genloss today and i think i'm gonna cut to the original episode 3 when the time comes bc while i do love founder's cut ep3 i feel like original cut ep3 is a better First experience. you know
thoughts & spoilers below the cut
i think my original takes on hetch would've been Very Different if i'd seen the new cut first? in the original it's really believable that he's actually helping ran, he calls them by name, he's kinda rushed and frantic but it reads as "we need to get out of here" vs "don't think too hard about anything or else you'll suspect something is up". it's also very possible it was more obvious to me bc i KNOW the twist, but still
he's also like way more over the top evil during the last scene and while the villainfucker brain is like 🔥🔥🔥 i like the subtlety of the original a lot more. i've seen people say that while the founder's cut is great for people who want to see the story without the time commitment, the original streams are The cut overall, and i agree. like the first couple eps definitely benefitted from some more post-production but the final ep stands fine as is, maybe with the additions like charlie's streams cutting in and ran's final line
my best guess after all that is that evil!Hetch is meant to be canon but i much prefer the idea that he's a rogue employee who got pulled back into showfall's control at the last minute. that's how i enjoy him as a character so even if it might not be the "correct" interpretation i can still play around with it ✨
tldr i think both versions are fun and have their different pros and cons but overall i think original hetch is a better first watch yeah

Alright, @ranboolivesaysstuff, you asked for criticism of Genloss, so here it is. This was my personal biggest flaw with how the story was written, plus it was a fun writing exercise. Feel free to discuss in notes why I’m right or wrong. It makes me very happy. :D
Do you know what would have, for lack of a better phrase, royally sucked? If we had gotten the "live" ending.
I mean, sure, being dragged away kicking and screaming while being brainwashed is indeed horrifying. But for the conclusion? Compared to the ending we got? I’m just going to say it—it’s the box. The most important (and expensive) part of Generation Loss was only used because of 3000 people. WHAT?!?
How lackluster would that conclusion be? We would lose the disturbing imagery of the crucifixion as the credits silently rolled, but also all of the subtle allusions and foreshadowing months beforehand that Showfall planned for the broadcast? ALL FOR NAUGHT? Ranboo, it should only be your character that wasted their time and effort for an ending that was just out of reach, NOT YOU TOO! So many people adore the ending of episode three, regardless of how they voted at the time. That really says something. But after the true "live" ending was revealed, I’d bet the poll would have a much larger split than 55/45, which, like, defeats the purpose of a moral dilemma if one of the options is objectively cooler than the other.
"But Cheese, why are you complaining about an ending we didn’t even get? Isn’t that pretty pointless?" Trust me, I hear you loud and clear. And to that, I say "no." We were pretty damn close to choosing "live." 55% is not a majority ruling. If the poll ended a minute earlier, we’d all be singing a different tune. Also, even though Ranboo has discussed exploring different media for future generations, it’s likely we’ll see another live experience from them. And if he keeps assuming the audience will choose the best or morally correct choice every time, disaster is bound to happen.
So, how do we make it better? I'm not saying you need make a completely new ending, Ranboo. No, no, no. You already have your ending. You’ve said that you really wanted that box closed on your head, so we're making it happen no matter what we choose. It's just way too cool and integral to the show to cut out. What changes is what Hetch says in response to the choice: "The audience has voted for you to LIVE! We will see you soon~" Ranboo screams out "NO—" and is cut off by the box. Maybe a more aggressive reaction from your limbs as they slowly fall to a still as the credits begin to roll.
There. The box has been shut. Round of applause lmao. Not only do we keep the Jesus imagery, but this hypothetical ending also has interesting lore implications. Cast members have been revived before, including Ranboo himself, so the death isn't jarring to the audience. The parallels between the box head and the TV screens in the background are greatly strengthened. The juxtaposition of the "die" ranboo being set free and the "live" being even more trapped by the box: even though "die's" body is gone, he still has himself, while "live" still has his body but their mind is forever lost. We even maintain the core mindset held throughout Genloss’s creation: "Changing your perception of reality in order to influence your choices for desired outcomes."
Plus, if people choose to complain that "Ranboo still died even though we voted for them to live," I’ve thought of a couple responses. For instance, how and why is the box execution the only way cast members can truly die? When have our choices ever mattered in the grand scheme of the series? Why would the final one be any different?
But my favorite response would be in the Founder’s Cut. The credits end, the screen fades, and, oh, look! There’s an additional after-credits scene! It’s the beginning of a new show, and we see what looks to be the back of Ranboo’s head, his scalp visibly wounded and mutilated, and bits of hair matted with blood. Hetch off-screen counts down "3 2 1." As Ranboo turns to introduce himself to the audience, we see their Showfall Media mask in perfect condition. However, possibly to cover up the rest of the scaring, he obstructs their eyes from view with a pair of green ski goggles (sunglasses). In its reflection, we see the camera, a reflection of ourselves forced to face the consequences of our choice.
END OF TAPE
As someone who’s been a fan since October 2020, do you know how harrowing that would be to see? The implication of Showfall making their own corpses "presentable" is deeply disturbing in itself, and it ties the content creation allegory into a nice little bow on top. Just a few changes would have made the "live" ending an equally satisfying conclusion to the series, rather than the ending we’re "not supposed to pick."
Long story short: Ranboo, you don’t have to possibly sacrifice the best part of your show for the impact of an execution. You are the creator, and I implore you to have your cake and eat it too.
#generation loss#ranboo#ranboolive#genloss#long post#this has been gnawing at my brain for a week#Was this made to cope that I may have been wrong in my theories#That’s for you to know and me to find out in therapy

GenLoss Brain/thought dump because I don’t think my brain is working enough to make a coherent theory
This is what I thought immediately after watching A Message From The Founder, I’m too scared to make a theory if something in the Founders cut gets dropped that immediately disproves it lol
- “The Social Experiments” were done on the viewers, not the characters. As a sort of test of morality and ethics to see how far we’d go to do what we thought was the correct thing.
- Ranboo even said that even if we didn’t mean to make certain decisions (Example: kill certain characters in part 2) we still made those decisions. No matter how conscious we were of this we kept the story going, which lead of to the final test of Ranboo’s life or death.
- I think the “Founder’s Cut” is going to be the VHS tape we saw at the end of the Pt 3, beginning of the Message, videos. A cut compilation of the experiment that the founder(or someone) keeps for themself.
- I’m wondering if there have been more experiments done like this? There could be the possibility of different universes, however I think that Generation Loss (whatever that is) has been doing experiments/stories for years, hence the “Infinite Generations/Infinite Stories” text. Do the other tapes have stories with similar motivations/themes to TSE, or are they each different entirely?
- I also wonder if the Founder was the one who made TSE. If the text was the founder speaking then I can assume they’re somehow involved at the very least. But if that collection of tapes belonged to the founder I’m wondering if that person is facilitating and creating the stories? Or just collecting them for personal reasons.
- Each stream had a different horror trope/theme from a different era, could this play into the whole talk of generations? Because “Infinite Generations” could mean so many different things. Like different age groups, different time periods, even actual different generations of a family.
Edit: This is just me being sad but also Ranboo revealing the fact that when the mask blinked, it meant that g!Ranboo’s memories were being restored, and the mask was blinking the entire time Ranboo was begging for the viewers to kill him just hurt me in a way I didn’t think it would. We bore witness to such a tragic character and I absolutely loved the storytelling involved with that.
If I have more thoughts I’ll add them somewhere on my page but what are your thoughts/opinions on Gen1 so far? My brain feels insanely full from thinking about this non-stop since Wednesday

Genloss is rotting my brain so SPOILER WARNING!
Thoughts :
1. Is showfall censoring the perception of the characters as well or just the audience ?
The obvious choice seems to be the first. Ranboo seemed to practically turn into an NPC about halfway through episode 2 today and go into auto pilot, which would insist that they really don’t know what’s going on. This also ties into when the hat is put on Sneeg and he is completely horrified by the room around him because he’s finally seeing the truth for the first time.
But what if showfall is just censoring their reactions? What if these characters can see everything that is going on around them and are rendered fully incapable of showing any emotion about it because of the mind control? This adds such a deeper level of horror to the slimecicle “saw scene” for lack of better words because this would mean that Ranboo is trapped inside his own head, fully aware he is killing someone and not only incapable of stopping himself but incapable of reacting to it at all.
2. Niki’s character is not only so unsettling, but beautifully acted
We are introduced to these characters on the carousel and you’re instantly gravitated towards her. She’s terrified. She’s sobbing. She has so much to live for and you want to save her! Why wouldn’t you want the only character who seems deeply human to survive this? But the moment she gets the chance to argue for her own life to be saved the act drops, she doesn’t even wipe the tears off of her face, and a plastered smile takes over her persona. Her emotions switch fast enough to give you whiplash and you can’t even process it before they’re moving onto the next.
The switch up was so well acted by Niki (she is so incredible I love her sm) and added such a twist, making you question if she should be saved, if she’s being mind controlled, if she’s a decoy, or if she’s really terrified and just doing anything she can to be saved by our protagonist.
3. Who was jerma????
The second the hat was put on Sneeg, Jerma froze so hard I had to check if my stream was buffering. He was scared and had no clue how to react, as if he was about to ask for his next like on the script. He wasn’t a diabolical villain like you would first assume from the saw-esque traps going on, he was just another mind controlled guy. So did he actually get killed by showfall? What did he do to warrant his murder? Was his death just the same as Sneeg and Slime in the last episode? Will he be recasted again in the finale?
4. And this leads me to my last thought, are these characters the same person being mind controlled differently?
Slime and Sneeg specifically were two separate people compared between the two episodes, while Ranboo is the same person going through out the game.
Sneeg and slime both referenced back to when they were in the games, with sneeg mentioning playing the cooking game and slime playing mousetrap and eating the cage.
So does this insist that Ranboo will be cast into these games for the next hero if he fails? Or are these separate people completely?
This project had been SO incredibly cool so far and after seeing how episode 2 completely changed the entire perception of the first episode, I can’t wait to do it all again with the finale and get my mind absolutely blown. Ranboo is so incredible and I can’t believe I’ve been here since he was goofing around with this idea originally.

Hear me out...this song is so Genloss-core ( 〃▽〃)
Maybe i should explain why shouldn't I?
'Oh, lately I've been awaking at night, out of breath and feeling scared' The first time we see g!ranboo, he was waking up.
'I think I must be under attack, but nothing's ever there' Because of the mask, he doesn't see the set/reality.
'Oh, I try to be the best version of me, so I push all the bad thoughts away' Again, the mask brainwashing him.
'But, something snaps in the back of my mind, and I think about it anyway' g!ranboo trying to break out of the mind control.
'I just wanna itch and scratch (I just wanna itch and scratch)' g!ranboo trying to remove the mask.
'Left discarded and forgotten right under your nose' it can be both everyone not seeing the reality and g!ranboo and g!sneeg not making big deals out of people dying.
'Oh, how did we end up in here? Nobody knows!' self explanatory (no one knows how they got there)
'I repress my fright, and I cover my eyes and surrender myself to my fate' brainwashing.
'The ones like me weren't built to last / I'm not leaving it up for debate' g!ranboo having a bad fate no matter what and being more likey to "escape".
'Now, look away I'm gonna be sick-sick-sick' when g!ranboo was "preforming" surgery on g!slimecicle and he saw the reality.
'They're coming after me / I can't run away/ They hear me screaming in fear/ They think it's hilarious' self explanatory (thore robots? coming after him and not being able to run away.)
'I don't know how my mind acquired these memories / Tell me what it all entails" the brainwashing and putting memories inside of everyone. g!ranboo asking about everything to hutch.
'I have shed the universal veil (I have shed the universal veil)' g!ranboo esaping the set and finally seeing reality.
'You're allowed to take me out if you so wish-wish-wish / No such thing as second chances / It's a hit or a miss!' g!ranboo asking to be killed instead of doing the show. And the chat voting.
and at the end of the song, he dies.

So I have an old Generation Loss theory I made after the Founders cut came out. It's a little incoherent due to me scribbling it down before I forgot but I'm gonna put it here and try to make it a clearer. Like I said before- this is just a silly theory I made and is probably very incorrect so bear with me. (I do go into something that Matpat talked about in his theory videos on GL just to warn you lol).
In the short videos we got before the social experiments we see red text and Matpat talks about how the red represents a certain group of people that I believe Ranboo is a part of (a lot of people speculated that Ranboo is the founder but I don't think that's correct and I'll talk about that again soon). These people want to kill the founder- teach people the "right" thing to do- which is to kill people when needed and possibly not just the founder (I need to rewatch those shorts-). (also I will be referring to the group the red text belongs to the Genloss group bc im not very creative)
Hetch talks about the founder gave him a place and runs the whole Showfall media company (the founder- not hetch if that was unclear). Why would Hetch/Showfall media want to kill Ranboo if he was the founder?
We now know Hetch as the script writer- that is the role the founder gave to him. He mentions stuff like how "characters" are only useful for as long as they are able to fulfill their roles (idk why I put that in there but I do think it's an interesting line). People go through these experiments to become cast members. Ranboo completed his experiment to become a cast member and did what they had to do to get to the end- even if it meant killing. Now the thing that I find quite ironic is the fact that Hetch labelled Ranboo as the hero [Who is he saving?]
In the end before they are killed, Ranboo has flashbacks- I mean- not quite flashbacks, but images of his younger self (could be his life flashing before his eyes). Right before the box closes we hear him mutter something that sounds like "I don't care". They don't care that they're about to die- which there could be multiple reasons why. One is that after the horrible things he did he thinks he deserves to die. Two, he knows that he has "followers" in this genloss group- now you're probably saying "Kai- wtf do you mean by followers?" Well, i think that Ranboo is a very important person in this group. I don't think Showfall media would have taken them if they didn't have a bigger part to play in that group.
Also, an odd thing is that in the Founders cut trailer there's this bit of red text that says "who are you?" that is probably important.
Another thing i found interesting in that trailer "One year ago a show was broadcasted to your world. Using the likenesses of popular figures." Did Showfall kidnap them? What's this other world that Showfall media exists in like?
At the very end we get to see a cassette tape being played- probably one of the tapes that that one character found (the one from that clip of Ranboo talking about how they found some old tapes and just needed to figure out how to work the tape player). This character has finally figured it out and this is the first tape we get to see the contents of (still really curious to know more about this Zero character)
Sorry this is really long- it's old but i wanted to know peoples thoughts on it. I realised a lot of things- like how the red text might not be from this genloss group (but the who are you message makes me have a whole other theory that im not about to go into). And since we have the new "from the desk of the founder" video we have a lot more info on the founder. Anyways, hope you had fun reading through my bullshit. Regards, -Kai

genloss plot for anyone who wants it (includes spoilers btw!!! if you wanna watch it on your own go to RanbooVods on youtube and search up Generation Loss. highly recommend!! cws and tws for flashing lights, glitches, blood/gore, mind control, and (brief)drugging.
(Generation Loss was a live streamed comedy/horror series by RanbooLive from may 24-28, 2023. viewers could choose actions of gl!Ranboo and interact with the environment when prompted.)
tl;dr of the whole thing is that gl!ranboo is an unwilling participant in a tv series called Generation Loss created by Showfall Media. the 3 part series follows him slowly realizing his situation as more and more people die around him. it all cultivates in the realization that the person who was helping him was actually the one running the show, and he is inevitably killed by the viewers (as opposed to him living and going on to be part of the cast forever).
he’s literally the DEFINITION of ‘doomed by the narrative’
onto the (VERY LONG) blow-by-blow/summary!
so basically, our main guy (gl!ranboo) wakes up in what appears to be a cabin, but is (very obviously) shown to the audience as just being a set (like one of those 50s reality TV sets with no fourth wall and only one angle). he wakes up extremely confused, not saying much until an urn (which the viewers chose to knock over) falls to the ground. the mask on his face lights up, and he switches into a typical point n’ click adventure character (‘I wonder what this does!’ ‘doesnt look like theres anything here :/‘)he encounters a few characters, namely a Slime Demon named Charlie and a man in a cage called Sneeg (SneegSnag). after sneeg is attacked by another monster in the cabin, gl!Ranboo’s mask stops glowing and he has a brief moment of clarity. he finds a VHS, and when put in the tv a silhouette shows up, telling him that he’s doing great and to just keep playing along.
the screen glitches and cuts to technical difficulties.
then, ranboo wanders into the attic, only to find the slime demon waiting for him. the whole thing turns into a comedic turn-based rpg style battle in which ranboo wins.
he then exits the door, only to find himself in a warehouse and getting drugged by someone in a rat mask. end of ep 1
in ep 2, gl!ranboo wakes up to find himself strapped to a chair with wires going into a headband from a generator. a ring of keys is next to him, and The Puzzler (played by Jerma) shows up on a TV in front of him.
he has 1 hour to find the correct key and escape.
chat picks the right key on the first try.
comedy/horror everyone.
He makes it to the next room (after turning off the TV) and finds a man (charlie) lying on an operating table, apparently dead. the puzzler comes onto another TV and explains that there is a key *in* the man.
gl!Ranboo, after some protest, begins to open the patient only to discover - surprise! - he’s alive. he talks like a surfer dude and goes on about LASIK for a minute, talking about how he couldn’t wait to up his prescription. gl!Ranboo cuts him open to discover that all of his blood is actually slime. he begins pulling things out of him to search for a key (toy cars, toy tanks, army men, a knife) before the screen glitches and all the slime turns red.
for a brief moment, we (and gl!ranboo) can see the reality -a very alive man with his stomach torn open- as the patient screams.
the glitches then stop and the shenanigans ensue! finally, after some time, the puzzler shows back up on screen and says that the key was ON the patient, not IN him!
after discovering a toilet tatoo, gl!ranboo searches inside a (grotesquely stained) toilet and finds the key to the next room.
this is running on way longer than i thought, so im gonna skip through this a bit.
he finds a carousel with 6 people on it (including sneeg from episode 1) and they all take turns explaining why ranboo should choose them to escape with.
gl!ranboo chooses sneeg and the viewers choos a girl named Niki, and they continue into the next room.
from here, they have to complete a series of rooms (with very unclear and sometimes impossible instructions), and each person except for sneeg and gl!ranboo die in the rooms. they must reach the end, lest a small bomb on each of their necks explodes, killing them. (niki dies in the first room, they bring someone else in, he dies, so on and so forth.) gl!ranboo, with the mask glowing and him acting like like a completely inhuman robot at this point, even nudges some people towards their death.
all of this is portrayed in a very comedic manner btw. niki gets shot but its played off as a joke by the Puzzler, someone gets crushed by a wall with no more than a “guess that’s not the right way” from gl!ranboo and sneeg.
finally, after everyone (even sneeg) dies, ranboo is brought into the Puzzler’s room. the Puzzler, apparently, accidentally detonated a bomb on himself and exploded. gl!ranboo finds a voice recorder left by the Puzzler telling him to find the truth and be set free. he walks away, but is interrupted by the same silhouette appearing on several screens. the mask stops glowing, and gl!ranboo turns to the fourth wall.
they walk forward, and the camera pans out to reveal directors, lights, and cameras before him.
finally, they walk forward and find an abandoned mall with a large banner covering the other side. “What the Fuck” is all that is said before the episode ends.
onto ep 3 baby! most trigger warnings apply for this episode, and this is the one where shit gets real. stay safe!
the silhouette reveals his name to be Hetch, and he guides gl!ranboo through the mall, dodging employees with “Showfall” masks covering their face (Showfall is revealed to be the company running the show that gl!ranboo stars in).
he finds an indistinguishable wire monster banging on some doors with smoke filling that room.
he breaks into what appears to be a showfall office, and hetch explains that the key to the heart of the facility is in here. gl!ranboo breaks into filing cabinets, binders, computers, steals keycards, and eventually finds 4 codes in a printer and a USB in a cabinet.
he takes the codes and a USB to the room nextdoor, which has a large computer at the center of the room with tons of wires leading from it.
he puts the USB in the computer, and looks at the codes. when Hetch pulls up a poll to ask chat what they think the answer is, gl!ranboo freaks out and is convinced that chat wants to kill him after the terrible things he did.
he picks the wrong code, and Hetch leaves, exclaiming that gl!ranboo is on his own now
after being chased by employees around the mall, he discovers charlie streaming empty content to a twitch chat (he was actually live for this! is twitch url is Slimecicle) addressing “the Drama” and reacting to colors for 15 minutes.
when his headphones are removed, he is finally aware of his surroundings and the two run through the mall, being chased by droves of employees. eventually, they find an exit completely boarded up.
however, they find in a side room Hetch, who is bleeding out from a slash to his side. he eventually dies, but before he does gives gl!ranboo a map written in blood that leads to a killswitch.
the two run there, but charlie is attacked and killed by the Wire Monster before he can reach it. gl!ranboo presses the button, and all of the employees are deactivated (the implication being that once their masks are shut off, they can no longer move).
gl!ranboo makes it to the “exit”, and during his final bow he is grabbed by Hetch, alive and well, and is dragged into the darkness.
gl!ranboo wakes up tied to a bunch of wires, a box around their head with spikes that would kill him upon closing.
Hetch explains that the entire thing, from the cabin to the mall, was planned from the beginning. Hetch gives the viewers a choice - to kill gl!ranboo, setting them free of the show in death, or let them live and be a part of the cast forever.
after 2 minutes, gl!ranboo begs the viewers to let him die, and the box closes on his head.
roll credits!
apologies if there are any mistakes or inaccuracies, im writing all of this from memory with a headache at 9:00 pm lol.
highly recommend watching this for yourself if you havent! i skipped over a lot of details, foreshadowing, and little moments so go watch for yourself if you want the full experience.
im not invested in this poll whatsoever, but i was bored and Generation Loss rotted my brain forever. so.

As the episode goes on, Ranboo finds Charlie again. Apparently, even though Charlie “died” in the last episode, Showfall was able to bring him back. Charlie doesn’t have any memory of the last 2 episodes (he was also in episode 1 btw), and it’s unknown if Ranboo remembers them or not, as he changes the subject every time it’s brought up.
Eventually the two stumble on a room where they find Hetch dying. Showfall found him, and it seems they weren’t too happy with his plans to stop them. Hetch tells them where to go to find a (suspiciously convenient) big red button to completely shut down Showfall.
Along the way Charlie is killed by “Security” (basically a big wire monster?? it hasn’t really been explained yet lmao), but Ranboo is able to press the button, causing the whole mall to shut down.
Ranboo walks to the exit door. He turns around to make one final bow before leaving. As he does, the lights behind him flicker on to reveal Hetch standing behind him. Hetch grabs him and drags him away.
As the camera comes back on, we, the audience, see Ranboo’s head trapped in what is basically a small iron maiden. As it zooms out, we see the rest of him.
You know how my original post mentioned Ranboo being crucified? This is what I was referring to.
Hetch explains more: him hacking Showfall and working to free Ranboo was all a trick. The person who died wasn’t Hetch. Ranboo being “freed” from the mind control, the glitches, everything was just to make the show more exciting for the audience.
Speaking of the audience, they are given a choice. Either let Ranboo continued being mind controlled and preforming for Showfall until he dies, or kill him now.
While this is happening, Ranboo is regaining memories from his past. (Note: this isn’t noticeable in the episode itself, and will be something added in the Founders Cut. Since this sequence (and most of the show) was done live, the actor (also called Ranboo) likely just forgot to say something referencing it.)
Ranboo looks at the camera and pleads with the audience to just let him die, to not let him be trapped by Showfall for the rest of his life, and the audience votes to kill him.
The episode ends with the box closing on Ranboo.
…so how do we get a time loop out of this?
Well, Showfall has repeatedly shown their ability to bring their “actors” back from the dead. Charlie had died in both episode 1 & 2, yet he was still present in 3.
On top of that, Ranboo’s pose while being crucified (shown above) closely resembles the pose he’s seen in when first waking up in the very first episode.
(it’s a bit hard to see, but look at how his arms are sprawled out. The creator / actor (Ranboo) drew attention to this in their “director’s commentary”, so it was intentional.)
ALSO during the ending when Ranboo is asking the audience (and maybe Showfall as well) to let him die, he specifically says “I don’t want to keep doing this.” This could just mean something along the lines of “I’ve done this once and I don’t want to do it again”, or it could mean something like “I’ve done this so many times and I can’t keep doing it. Let this end.”
IN CONCLUSION: GenLoss: TSE being a time loop, while not explicitly confirmed, is quite likely due to a number of reasons.
Also you should still totally watch the episodes yourself. There are so many things about them that I couldn’t talk about, from humor to horror aspects, and (almost) all of it was done live & with only a basic script. (some of it had to be prerecorded to have it all happen in the same episode, such as multiple scenes before the crucifixion.)
(also also: the social experiments is only the first* of many “generations” that are planned! currently there’s only generation 1, a couple of teasers that came out before it (considered generation 0), and the Chronicle 0 twitter posts. you don’t need to watch anything before or after the 3 episodes to understand TSE though!)
thinking about how generation loss: the social experiments is a time loop.
thinking about how ranboo can’t remember anything before the resets until his crucifixion. does he remember the previous loops then? does he realize that even if when the audience chooses “die” that he’ll still be trapped?
“let me die” isn’t a plea to the audience, it’s a plea to showfall. a plea to just let it end. let them find a new hero.
“let me die and let it be permanent.”
#long post#it is so hard to talk about something when A: part of the story is revealing that the characters have been in a show AND B: the characters#- have the SAME NAMES as the people playing them.#…here i was thinking my genloss fixation had worn off#guess not#again sorry if nothing i said made sense lol
