"Ouch, indeed," Dick says, rubbing his eyes with a hand and running his fingers down the bridge of his nose. There are more examples he could show her, but with the heavy beat radiating through his head, maybe the rest of that discussion could wait. He just wants to lie down, but it's probably best to not risk falling asleep— who knows what Emma would do then. Besides, talking meant he didn't have to think about the fact there was a new Robin, especially if he can steer the conversation away from why he had left Gotham.
The screen is too bright; focus anyone with it glaring above him. He turns back towards the screen, one hand shielding his eyes, to shut off the batcomputer. He swivels back towards Emma. "I wouldn't say no to painkillers. Acetaminophen, if you've got it," He smiles. Sounds like he's ordering from a bar, but if there was a place that would have a full menu of painkillers, it'd be here. He knows where it is, but he's still waiting for the pain of the bright screen to subside. "It's not always as effective as others, for me at least, but it doesn't have the same risk of bleeding that other painkillers have. Not something you want immediately after getting concussed, you know?" He shrugs.
Dick taps out a rhythm against the chair of the arm with the palms of his hands. He still needs to figure out who is going to cover for him in Blüdhaven. "There's more variety in Blüdhaven and food tends to be cheaper...maybe part of that is the fact Two-Face isn't regularly wreaking havoc there, so people are less worried about having two-for-one deals. It's also better for seafood…" He pulls his phone from an inner pocket of his jacket as he speaks, furrows his brow as he shoots off a message to a few other vigilantes who might be available.
The phone goes back into his pocket. "Sorry, business, what was I saying?" He pushes his hair from his forehead. "Seafood. Yeah, the waters south of Blüdhaven aren't too bad because the major port is in the north of the city, so there's less pollution. It's a small market, but if you know the right places you can get a great meal."
It was a coastal city, so Dick had made himself very well-acquainted with those working on the harbor. It's a mark of pride that there had been less issues, at least in the southern waters of the city, since he had gotten there. It wasn't his work that had made it so— sure, he had thwarted several criminals in the area, but the connections he had made between certain philanthropists and environmental advocates had definitely done more for that than he had.
"But what do you like to eat? I'll keep an eye out for a good place if you ever drop by," he offers.
Dick was already headed towards the computer when Emma asked. "Yeah, it is. Crime rate's worse than Gotham," he responds. He doesn't continue until he's seated at the computer. He's done enough fighting and running and feeling like shit this evening. If he's teaching, he's doing it sitting down.
"It's where the assholes who didn't want to deal with Batman moved. There are a lot of other contributing factors, but that's the flashy way to explain it," He glances to Emma as he speaks. He could go into detail, and part of him wants to, but it's probably not the answer she wants. He looks back to the screen, doing his best not to squint as he pulls up past x-rays. "I first went for a case. Bodies kept washing up in Gotham's south harbor and they were all from Blüdhaven and Bruce asked me to investigate. The situation spiraled and I've been there ever since."
He's quiet for a moment as he considers which images to highlight for Emma. Dick settles on two of a skull fracture Bruce had received probably a decade ago that had a break similar to what he had worried Killer Croc had delivered to him earlier that evening. Dick chose it mostly because he could remember when it happened, the crisp fall air and the year, but it was also a clear example. "I know that story doesn't really give the best impression, but it really is a great place. Lots of amazing people who don't deserve a situation like that. And honestly, Blüdhaven has better food," he says with a smile, shifting his weight from one side of his body to the other.
"You see what I mean about the Y-shape?" He asks, gesturing to the screen. It's light is hurting his eyes, so he watches Emma, hand pointed back towards the screen. "There are some other less obvious ones, but this is so you get the idea."

This particular passage jumped out to me.
Why I find it interesting is that it’s framing the “noble spices” as something very fancy that not a lot of common folk have and tries to portray Rozemyne as ‘better’ because she enjoys simple flavors.
This is made because she’s Japanese, and Japanese people (seem to) prefer less condiments.
In Europe spices were originally brought for nobles because they were the only ones who could afford them. Kinda like the sugar thing going on in the first volumes.
It’s sort of a way to frame her taste as something that connects her to the common folk. That makes her relatable.
But in Europe, eventually, due to the merchant trades, spices became super common, which made them cheap. And nobles ditched the spices cause even peasants could eat them.
Rozemyne describes the Ahrensbach cuisine as spicy. Which makes me wonder.
I understand a lot of people don’t like spicy food. But as someone who does, it sounds really wild to see someone describe it so unfavorably

So, on the topic of kosher video game runs, I have just remembered that I'm challenging myself to do a kosher stardew run. And it's working out about as well as it's been working irl (there was a shrimp cocktail in my fridge and I was so scared 😭)

Farmed salmon is pale, soft and mild-flavoured because the animal lives an artificially low-stress life with relatively little exercise and is fed a carefully controlled diet.
Kobe beef is pale, soft and mild-flavoured because the animal lives an artificially low-stress life with relatively little exercise and is fed a carefully controlled diet.
The difference between a delicacy and something foodies turn their noses up at is not really a matter of flavour.

Always freaking terrified of going places with people and not being able to eat anything on the menu and them thinking I think it's all disgusting or that I don't like food from other cultures or think it's disgusting or something

thinking about how chongyun's specialty is a variation on noodles with mountain delicacies, which is a li cuisine dish. kind of ironic since from how xi'er describes li cuisine, it's the farthest thing from the kind of food he would eat. but he is from the mountains (presumably, if we're to assume the tianheng thaumaturges live somewhere around mt. tianheng — i actually don't know where they live exactly on the map and it's driving me insane) and the aforementioned "mountain delicacies" is a signature of li cuisine.
also i think it's hilarious that his favorite food is actually inazuman cuisine. with imported ingredients, even. surely this guy's gotta be loaded with cash to eat imported food from inazuma of all places on a presumably semi-regular basis at least based on his voice-overs. i mean yeah liyue is technically the closest nation to inazuma (as of sumeru's release anyway; future updates might surprise us), but they're still pretty far apart. the transport fee for that stuff's gotta hike the price up significantly. (makes sense if the tianheng thaumaturges made bank with their exorcism services. and they've been in the biz for a long time apparently. chong not accepting payment is because on some level he probably doesn't think he deserves to get paid because he never actually gets to do any exorcising himself — it's always his yang constitution that does all the work. coupled with how there aren't any indications that he ever goes hungry, we can assume that he doesn't need to get paid to procure food and all that kind of stuff. ergo he has a pretty cushy home life.)
in contrast, xingqiu's specialty is a variation on a yue-style dish. he does say that he likes yue cuisine. fitting considering he's from the feiyun commerce guild. which is in liyue harbor. and xi'er says yue cuisine is "heavily seafood-based."
yeah that's all well and good. but when i think about how if you put "li" and "yue" together a la ppap then you obviously get "liyue," and how the mountains and the sea are both basically integral parts of the nation's identity (imo anyway) and how this is being referenced with these two boys specifically... well.
in conclusion, they were meant to be lmao

#Been having some birthday thoughts#because if I'm left to my own devices I end up self-reflecting and navel gazing#and of course sometimes this is not a good thing but whatever I guess it's just a tradition now#I don't want this to sound like the cliché 'I'm not getting any younger'/'I'm an old man now' shit but like. I have to admit#I do have the feeling that I'm running out of time to be acting like I have been. Kinda lackadaisical like I acted in my 20s.#I do have the feeling that I need to shape up and start learning how to human adult. It's just that.#It feels like so much of it is out of my hands. I try my hardest and everything still seems to end up being harder than it maybe needs to b#I know what I need. I need a better paying job. car insurance. health insurance. a local number. a regular schedule. real days off#but those things (esp. looking for a new job) cost money time and energy I don't have right now#And what I want and what I need are at odds. I want to be able to wear a kilt to work and buy hockey cards and kiss I mean see my coworker#But maybe I need to grow the fuck up and realise that the things I want aren't more important that my physical/mental well being#Maybe I need to grow the fuck up and prioritise my needs over such childish wants#Unfortunately satisfying some of those wants are the only thing other than going to the lake that are bringing me joy right now.#I've got a lot to think about right now. And I have some difficult decisions coming up ahead#But for tonight I will celebrate my birthday and eat seafood and watch star trek and not think about tomorrow
