I'm absolutely beside myself that Midnight Sun, The Nameless Soldiers, and Night of the Battle to Retake the Wall are among the top 5 chapters. I vividly remember the day the chapter 80 spoilers dropped and I don't think I've been the same ever since.

hange admitting that yelena was right: a cLOser LooK [AOT/SNK character analysis]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a lot of people look at this scene and think that hange is a weak commander / that they didn't deserve such a role because of how fast they admitted defeat. we've seen such scenes before, where hange shows great pessimism, resignation, and doubt:
when pastor nick was killed
the political uprising by the yeagerists
now, conceding that they weren't able to stop eren from rumbling
just because a character second-guesses their actions = they didn't deserve a leadership position is a rather unnuanced take on what has transpired. we forget to mention that every time hange is faced with a challenge, they don't give up. they have thoughts of it, sometimes those thoughts are reasoned out by levi (the pastor nick situation), and other times, it's just sheer determination to press on.
hange wasn't meant to be the charismatic, gambling leader that erwin was. hange prioritizes their humanity and humanity in a more literal sense. their search for truth is both a personal curiosity as much as it is a search for a peaceful resolution to so much of what they deem as unnecessary conflict. it's not to prove anything or anyone right. the truth serves as a symbol of peace to hange, who, in the process of searching for this elusive peace, had to question their own humanity. i like that hange is always questioning not just the world, but themself. the idea that you could be wrong is not something most people in positions of power think about often.
sure, we want a leader who simply knows that what they're doing is the best that what they could do. but what if they're wrong? in attack on titan, there are so many instances of people realizing that their fundamental beliefs are a sham, and having to reevaluate them over again, and again, and again. hange doesn't even wait for the breaking point. they are constantly looking for new possibilities, new angles, and that could be their failing, which is to be stuck in the endless ways something has, and could go wrong.
this scene isn't hange saying yelena was right all along, that they had no agency and no more hope. hange is literally one of the most hopeful people in the story, to the point that they want to save the world from inevitable destruction AND talk sense to someone who has, since a long time ago, decided on everyone's fate. i read this scene as more of one of hange's really sad acknowledgement of their powerlessness, and more importantly, their complicity, and vulnerability. eren is grasping for straws when he desperately asks hange for an alternative while in the underground prison cell, grabbing their collar, almost ready to transform. hange, too, doesn't care about yelena's declaration of zeke being right or wrong.
when hange says 'sure,' but you can be sure that hange is really just saying 'when will this all end? will everyone be dead by then?' there is deadened aspect to their speech here that is frustrating, when hearing from this from a commander, but also so very human. hange, a character that is constantly looking forward to new horizons, find themselves at the juncture where the new horizons are burning to crisp. perhaps voicing all of this pessimism isn't the most motivating thing a commander could do, but you know what? in a world where many innocent people had to die, regardless, is a sobering fact, to convey the hopelessness of it in the moment instead of grabbing yelena by the collar (as hange once did with pastor nick) indicates a disposition of someone who has changed. we can't have our fun, morally righteous, scientist back.
levi, in these moments of hange's impassioned speeches, is in the corner. at this crucial moment of vulnerability, levi doesn't say anything. he sips tea, he keeps his silence, but he's there all the same. he lets hange speak their mind because hange, despite their words, won't and can't keep out of action. in the pits of this fiery hell, hange doesn't lead the suicide charge like erwin. hange is the suicide charge, which is in character, because what is hange? someone who is afraid to die, yet willing to do so. hange actually wants to live, they're scared, they want to go coolly. there's nothing cool about someone who sacrifices themselves for humanity and wanted to die anyway (historia, in the beginning).
our emotionally constipated commander who will definitely cry if they looked one more second in levi's eyes when he asks them to devote their heart, hange zoe, leaps to their death. their final moments reminded of the beauty of titans and the worry for the safety of their comrades. that's the truth they wanted to know in the end. getting insight on the afterlife hange was great, because we got to know that hange till the end, was just another ridiculously idealistic, selfless, good soldier who dedicated their heart. levi didn't make that decision for them. it was wholly, solely theirs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway this isn't about whether hange is a Good or Bad commander (because that kind of argument doesn't really interest me), but just more of a hange isn't a one-dimensional character who made Bad Military Strategy

you know what scene i really want to see? when they get to eren, i want him to acknowledge hange’s death and say something about it.
maybe, apologize to levi, saying something along the lines ‘i knew how much she meant to you’, or, maybe, admit that it was his fault or something like that
i dunno, but i’d like to see eren’s reaction? will he be sad because of it? will he start regretting his actions even more? or will he just write this loss as another casualty, a thing that had to be done in order to achieve his goal?
that’s just...... a very interesting concept and i would love to see a scene like this

A letter from Hanji to Levi | post chapter 132 |
For Levi's month.
And for all of us who've ever lost someone to this world.
.
.
I'll wait for you.
Where the water meets the skies and stars dive into a deep sea of sand.
I'm okay. Here, cold doesn't burn and flowers never dry and I'm not afraid of life's own, fleeting fragility.
Now, my feet are bare and my hands hold nothing but sweet time to spend. Or is it time a mere human construction we've once hoped to tame?
Maybe, here, I just simply measure time in different dreams:
The tiny freckles that rain over your cheeks, like a million galaxies wide dotting over the nightfall. The spoons of sugar you put into your tea. The subtle glitching of your lips, when you can't help but melt into a smile; rare as it is.
I have no rush, although I miss you. Here, where the grass grows evergreen, I've learnt the art of patience.
Or maybe, my heart just froze the day it's been ripped from yours. And time stopped, then, too.
But don't you worry about me, my love. I'm still one in the same; a spirit wild and colorfully reckless, as you've always remembered me to be.
And each sunset when you whisper my name, I'm alive in another breath.
I'm not up or down. No left nor right. Here, the winds lull me with songs from places I've never dared walk, and my hair dances in the lavender breeze: tangled and rebellious and free all over again.
I've heard once, warm things are graced to those who wait. So I spy on you, every now and again, to avoid the kid in me run impatient towards your embrace.
And I play in-disguise, careful not to break the rules. And I send you signals only you and I are able to understand; for words have been forbidden eternal between us.
So I ruffle your curtains and chant with your kettle. I leave footsteps imprinted on the sea-shores, and paint your memory into the clouds that roll.
I let traces of me slide onto the Earth as I sit, ever so relentless. And I wish, with an innocence brighter than sunrise, that you'll be attentive enough to notice. That my slight indiscretions will one day make you happy.
Because I'm not gone, but a flickering presence. I'm not far, but buried very deep inside you: in the kind centres of your chest. In the gentle drumbeat of your pulse. In the corners of the house your love has long before built for me, big or small.
So don't you cry, my oh so brave boy. Don't you allow yourself pray to my taunting ghost.
Don't you know I turn to ash when your nightmares call? How helpless I ache when you say you want to become invisible, like birds migrating off to spring?
I've heard once, reuiniting is softer to those who've guarded with patience. And, as I watch silver threads crown your head of jemstones, my soul is easily sure, now:
Our moment can wait, still. You can arrive late. Get on the very last train, on the very last minute. Hug and hold and squeeze life until it's been down to its weakest, final drop.
And I'll be here. Always. With both arms open and a smile like fireworks.
And you'll fade into me as you race. And I'll braid poppys in between black locks. And we'll be able to speak, for all those other nights war payed for the silence in our souls.
But I have no rush, my golden soldier, although I do miss you. Don't you see? For once, I can forsake my longing, keep it hidden in the back-pocket.
Because every time you laugh, a glimpse of fire ignites my lungs. And i can inhale back to consciousness for a while.
And every time your eyes tell me you're okay, too, my heart can lay in peace: if only a little bit longer.
So take your time, my brightest Levi. Because time does not exist where I am.
And I'm still the same.
And I want you to live long, but not fast.
Don't you recall?
Between you and I, farewells are nothing but vanishing scars; your fist on my chest, our gazes making up promises to the sun.
When we let the words collide, bleeding hopeless from our lips, we can bend the horizon between our fingers. We can be immortal, even if just for a futile, magical moment.
Because, when you look at me, and I answer in ways only you will ever read, we're accomplices to eachother. Forever partners in crime.
And so, I'll wait for you.
Because, if it's up to us, it's never goodbye.
But a "see you later".

Come up to meet you
Tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart
Tumblr media
Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming up tails
Heads on a science apart
Tumblr media
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start
Tumblr media
I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart
Tumblr media
Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh, and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing our tails
Coming back as we are
Tumblr media
Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start
