speaking of snails i need to share a major annoyance regarding snails and the swedish language
snail in swedish is âsnigelâ
except itâs NOT. âsnigelâ actually means âslugâ. the word for snail is âsnĂ€ckaâ
but âsnĂ€ckaâ also just means shell. but only like a seashell or a snail shell. a shell on like a turtle or something is a âskalâ (see âskalmanâ). but also seashells are often called snĂ€ckskal (shell shell?) eggshell is also âskalâ, as is fruit rind/skin (see bananskal)
back to snails
nobody in everyday speech calls snails âsnĂ€ckorâ, you call snails âsniglarâ and slugs by the type of slug, like âskogssniglarâ (forest slugs) or âmördarsniglarâ (murder slugs). yes murder slugs.
images below the cut to showcase how fucking annoying this stuff is. i have chosen not to translate âsnigelâ or âsnĂ€ckaâ in the image ids. mostly. (sniglar&snĂ€ckor is just plural)
ID: Wikipedia information box. The text says âSnĂ€ckorâ, underneath is a picture of a snail. End ID.
ID: Wikipedia information box. The text says âSniglarâ, underneath is a picture of a slug. End ID.
ID: Wikipedia article title: âSniglarâ. Underneath it says, translated by me: âFor land living snĂ€ckor in general, which are sometimes called sniglar, see snĂ€ckor. For âsea slugsâ, see naked snĂ€ckor [nudibranchs].â End ID.
ID: image search of âsniglarâ, showing four results. two of the images show snails and two of them show slugs. End ID.
ID: image search of âsnigelâ, showing four results. three of which are snails and one is a slug. End ID.
ID: image search of âsnĂ€ckorâ, showing four results. three of which are snails and one of which is seashells. End ID.
ID: a wiktionary entry from english wiktionary, showing the different definitions of âsnĂ€ckaâ: 1. a gastropod. [Synonym: snĂ€ckdjur.] 2. a shell from a gastropod, especially a seashell. [Synonym: snĂ€ckskal.] 3. (informal) a seashell more generally. [Synonym: snĂ€ckskal.] 4. (anatomy) a cochlea. [Synonym: hörselsnĂ€cka.] 5. a small earphone, to be placed inside the ear. 6. a (filled) spiral-shaped pastry. 7. (slang, somewhat dated) an attractive woman. End ID.
(oh right i forgot the fucking. earphone. you call a cochlea a âhörselsnĂ€ckaâ (hearing shell) but you call a earphone just âsnĂ€ckaâ)
ID: english wiktionary entry on âsnigelâ: âSwedish.â in a little box underneath it says: âSwedish Wikipedia has an article on: sniglar.â underneath the box is a picture of a snail with the caption: âen snigelâ (a snigel). the entry reads: âEtymology: From Old Swedish snighil, from Old Norse snigill. Noun: snigel. 1. a snail or slug, member of the Gastropoda class. End ID.
ID: swedish wiktionary entry on âsnigelâ, translated by me: first there is a photo of a slug captioned: âSnigel (1.) of the species european black slug, Arion ater.â the entry reads: âSnigel. pronunciation: ËsniËgËÉl. 1. Individual of the infraorder sniglar, Stylommatophora (subgroup of the class Gastropoda); land snail without shell. 2. (informal) individual of the class snĂ€ckor, Gastropoda. [Synonym: snĂ€ckor]. End ID.
ID: swedish wiktionary entry on âsnĂ€ckorâ, translated by me: first there is a collage of four photos of different gastropods captioned: âa collage of different species in the class snĂ€ckor.â the entry reads: âSnĂ€ckor. 1. (mollusc) [wet animal] class Gastropoda in the phylum Mollusca (mollusc) [wet animal] with around 70,000 species. Compare: sniglar (infraorder Stylommatophoram, land snails without shell, subgroup of the class Gastropoda). 2. declension of snĂ€ckaâ End ID

Setting Up Your Babyâs New Room
Single Mom Nursery Prep: Creating a Cozy Space for Your Little One
If youâre a single mom-to-be, you are going to get excitement about setting up your babyâs nursery. Letâs chat about how to create a perfect little nest for your bundle of joy without breaking the bank or losing your mind.
When to Start?
So, when should you start? While thereâs no hard and fast rule, many pros suggest getting the ball rolling around week 20 of your pregnancy. This gives you plenty of time to plan, shop, and set things up before your little one makes their grand entrance. Plus, itâs a great way to channel all that energy!
Budget-Friendly Nursery Ideas
Babies can be expensive! But creating a beautiful nursery doesnât have to drain your wallet. Here are some tricks to make your nursery dreams come true without breaking the bank:
A fresh coat of paint can work wonders! Try fun techniques like half-painted walls or cute arches to add some pizzazz without spending a fortune.
Check out budget-friendly options like IKEAâs Sniglar cot. At under ÂŁ70, itâs a steal! And hey, you can always jazz it up with some paint to match your style.
Get creative with what you already have. That old dresser? Slap a changing pad on top, and voila! Youâve got a changing table.
Channel your inner artist and make your own wall art or mobile. Itâs a great way to add personal touches while saving money.
Second-hand shops can be goldmines for non-safety items like dressers, gliders, and decor. Just give everything a good clean before bringing it home.
You donât need all those fancy gadgets right away. Focus on the essentials and add things as you go along.
Remember, Rome wasnât built in a day, and neither does your nursery have to be. By taking your time you can actually save money and enjoy the process along the way
Space-Saving Nursery Solutions
If youâre working with a small space, donât stress! There are plenty of clever ways to maximize every inch of your nursery:
Multi-tasking furniture: Look for pieces that serve double duty, like a dresser that can also be a changing table.
Vertical thinking: Make use of your walls with floating shelves or hanging organizers. Theyâre great for storage and can double as cute displays.
Closet hacks: Add a second rail to your closet to double its capacity. Those tiny baby clothes donât need much hanging space anyway!
Under-crib storage: Make use of that space under the crib with some cute baskets or drawers.
Think small: Consider space-saving alternatives like mini cribs or compact diaper pails.
With these tricks up your sleeve, youâll be amazed at how much you can fit into even the tiniest nursery!
Nursery Safety Essentials
Now, letâs talk about the most important part of nursery prep â safety. Creating a safe haven for your little one doesnât have to be overwhelming. Here are the key things to keep in mind:
Crib safety: Choose a sturdy crib that meets current safety standards. Keep it bare â no soft bedding, toys, or pillows to reduce SIDS risk.
Anchor it: Secure heavy furniture to the wall to prevent tipping hazards. Trust me, once your little one starts crawling, theyâll be into everything!
Electrical safety: Cover those outlets and keep cords out of reach. Babies are surprisingly quick!
Window wisdom: Make sure windows are safely locked, especially on upper floors.
Fire safety: Install smoke detectors and keep a fire extinguisher handy. Itâs always better to be prepared!
General childproofing: Use doorstops, maintain a comfy room temperature, and regularly scan for potential hazards.
By taking these precautions, youâre creating a safe space for your baby to explore and grow. And remember, a safe nursery means more peace of mind for you!
Time-Saving Nursery Setup Tips
As a single mom, your time is precious. Here are some tips to help you set up your nursery efficiently:
Plan ahead: Start around 18-20 weeks and make a clear timeline.
Prioritize: Focus on the essentials first â crib, changing area, and a comfy feeding chair.
Multi-task: Use a dresser as a changing table to save time and space.
Smart storage: Use baskets and labels to keep things organized and easy to find during those middle-of-the-night diaper changes.
Paint smart: Do any painting between 23-25 weeks to allow plenty of time for airing out.
Keep it simple: Remember, newborns donât need a ton of stuff. A minimalist approach can save you time, money, and headaches!
By focusing on whatâs truly important, you can create a functional nursery without overwhelming yourself. And hey, less setup time means more time for those important self-care moments like enjoying sugarless mocktails with friends or catching up on your favorite shows!
Nursery Essentials and Organization
Letâs break down the mini must-haves checklist for your nursery and how to keep them organized:
Sleep central: A crib with a firm mattress and fitted sheets is a must.
Feeding station: A comfortable nursing chair will be your best friend during those late-night feeds.
Changing area: A dresser with a changing pad on top is perfect for diaper duty and provides storage.
Storage solutions: Bins, baskets, and hanging organizers will be your organizational heroes.
Diaper disposal: A diaper pail is a sanitary way to deal with dirty diapers.
To keep things tidy:
Use drawer dividers or small baskets to separate clothing items.
Keep frequently used items in easy-to-reach spots.
A hanging bookshelf can double as storage and decor.
With smart organization, youâll spend less time searching for things and more time snuggling your little one!
Nursery Theme Inspiration
Now for the fun part â decorating! Your nursery theme can reflect your personality and create a cozy vibe for your baby. Some popular themes include:
Adventure
Boho
Beach
Cloud
Jungle
When choosing a theme, think long-term. Will you still love it in a year or two? Natural materials like wood and stone can add a calming touch. Wall decor options like removable stickers allow for easy updates as your child grows.
Donât forget about textures and patterns â theyâre great for your babyâs development. And remember, itâs okay to keep large furniture pieces neutral. This allows you to easily change up the theme with smaller decor items as your childâs interests evolve.
Conclusion
Creating a nursery as a single mom might seem daunting, but with these tips and tricks you should be able to manage it! Remember, the most important thing is creating a loving space for your little one. It doesnât have to be perfect or Instagram-worthy â what matters most is that itâs safe, functional, and filled with love.
As you prepare for this new chapter, donât forget to take care of yourself too. Pregnancy can be stressful, especially when youâre doing it solo. Make time for self-care, whether thatâs gentle exercise, connecting with friends, or just taking a moment to breathe. Avoid bad habits and try to maintain a positive environment for both you and your baby.
And hey, if youâre feeling overwhelmed, reach out for help. Donât be afraid to ask friends or family for assistance with nursery prep.
Remember, every parentâs journey is unique. Trust your instincts, be kind to yourself, and enjoy this special time. Before you know it, youâll be rocking your little one in that nursery youâve created with so much love.
