speaking of snails i need to share a major annoyance regarding snails and the swedish language

snail in swedish is “snigel”

except it’s NOT. “snigel” actually means “slug”. the word for snail is “snäcka”

but “snäcka” also just means shell. but only like a seashell or a snail shell. a shell on like a turtle or something is a “skal” (see “skalman”). but also seashells are often called snäckskal (shell shell?) eggshell is also “skal”, as is fruit rind/skin (see bananskal)

back to snails

nobody in everyday speech calls snails “snäckor”, you call snails “sniglar” and slugs by the type of slug, like “skogssniglar” (forest slugs) or “mördarsniglar” (murder slugs). yes murder slugs.
