Reposted from @theoregonian The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazard alert for the Oregon coast this weekend. Higher than usual tides are expected, and sneaker waves are possible along the central Oregon coast up through the south Washington coast. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), “sneaker waves can rapidly travel hundreds of feet up a beach following long periods of quiet surf and smaller waves, ‘sneaking’ up on beachgoers and pulling them into frigid, rushing currents, or causing rocks and logs to dislodge and injure beachgoers.” Sneaker waves are common on the West Coast, particularly in the stormy Pacific Northwest. The warning is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. - murder mountain where people mysteriously disappear. its a good place to go if you want to ‘’start your life over’’, beats the san fran bridge

- Eureka has the highest case of ‘’unusual disappearances’’

- you will most definitely die by a vehicular incident

- emerald triangle my roommate has told me the weed here is better and thats because its soggy as here

- soggy! literally nothing dries unless you maker it. if you air dry your hair itll now take 2-3 business days to do it. mold grows anywhere it can then so dont seal yer boxes or your clothes

- moths the size of golf balls

- brown recluse spiders

- mysterious yelling matches on your street every night from 8-2 am!

- economic inequality!

- nobody will fucking hire you!

- everything is more expensive especially in eureka because its all import stuff. that $1 bag of chips you could get at your local gas station? $1.25 here now

Tristen September 13, 2017 at Rebel Lounge, Phoenix AZ [Touring for her Sneaker Waves album]

Tristen rolled back into town! I hadn’t seen her since 2012... way too long, but I’ve been keeping tabs on her working side gigs as a touring member for Jenny Lewis’s Voyager before her latest, Sneaker Waves dropped with the video, “Got Some,” which seems to be giving Tristen more traction on a wider scale, although being labeled as country to those new to her music. She is a singer songwriter story teller, and heck, she’s based in Nashville, but still--she varies in her choice of instruments, not afraid to switch it up and go electric or strip it down to just her voice and Husband/Collaborator, Buddy Hughen’s guitar plucks. Whatever... She’s an artist honing her craft... and that includes her stage presence.

I came to the show only knowing the first track/video off her latest and I was thoroughly introduced to many more songs off of Sneaker Waves and treated to many of her hits... the show was a nice mix of new and old, which, when artists have more than 2 albums is something we as fans can hope for, but might not get (Andrew Bird, I’m looking at you).

She started with the song “Negotiating,” which after Jenny O’s last song, “Intuition,” seemed fitting. Its a strong word, just like Intuition. It had a nice and slow pulsing to get us slowly to where Tristen wanted to lead us sonically. I really took to it, even though it’s pacing is a wee bit slower than I prefer. Then she kicked things up a bit with “Eager for your Love.” 

She introduced “Got some” as a song about being on the receiving end of an  awkward Text Message and then the next song, “Alone Tonight,” as a song about the person who sent the message. 

Her music, though easy on the ears as pop songs can be, has some bite in lyrical content and in the way she vocalizes her words... sometimes her voice goes down smooth like honey and then at other times, it’s lo-fi guttural.

I also realized that the song “Catalyst” has a sonic quality similar to the Eurythmic’s “Sweet Dreams,” and “Glass Jar,” made me envision a music video of Sylvia Plath being put in a Bell Jar, the Psychiatrists tapping on the glass... 

In the years between the last time I saw Tristen and now, she has definitely upped her stage game, interacting with both her band mates and the crowd... working the crowd, no matter how small and despite Phoenix’s small concert crowd for this show, she was able to wrangle us in for an encore singalong to a new song about a Psychic Vampire, which you either know one or ARE one!

After the show, I bought up the 4th to the last copy of her poetry collection, ‘Saturnine,’ Which was a quick read. I loved that she started to publish her poetry... I was feeling like getting back to reading recently and it was a nice way to segue back into reading.

This concert was a reunion of sorts... after the show, my friends and I hit the merch table... and she was happy to recreate a photo we all took in 2012 when she played the Rhythm Room. After that show, I thought she’d never return, but she does nearly every time, which I am thankful for. Sometimes the audience quantities are so low that many acts tend to skip Phoenix due to turn out (I’m looking at you, too many of yous!). She’s always game to chat post show and is always warm and friendly. I told her that I hadn’t listened to the album before the show, wanting to be surprised and see what I thought of it live and she thought that was cool. And I think she is cool. Till next time... how many Tristen setlists do I have? Am I 3 for 3 or...
