I'm trying to decide between a blood python or a second ball python for my next snake. The care component I'm not super concerned about, as I'm experienced. But I've heard bloods can be kind of sassy. Is that true?

Sassy, sure! I phrase it like bloods have more opinions than balls. My balls were very chill, with everything. They didn't seem to have a preference about handling or heights or the way you picked them up, or anything at all.

Bloods, even nice ones, will huff and let you know they're uncomfortable with certain things. They can be specific about how you approach them, how high you hold them, how well you support their bodies, etc. I actually find this much more engaging and interesting, and consider this a plus of the species. They have big personalities!

Now some can be more "aggressive" if that's what you meant by sassy, but raise a CBB hatchling from babyhood and the odds are in your favor. I do get the occasional aggressive blood, but they are outnumbered by the ones that are easier to handle. Do be prepared for that possibility though-- but they can be worked with and made comfortable with you with steady trust building. :)

Snake

Oh my god man I love snakes!!! Do you want a really cool snake?? Jokes on you, you get one anyways!!!

This is the Boomslang (Dispholidus Typus)!! It is in the family of Afro-Arabian Colubrids (A family of snakes that live in the Sahar Desert that is incredibly diverse!) Other species within the Colubridae (Not specifically Afro-Arabian) family are the Red-Lipped Herald Snake, the Northern American Racer, and, perhaps goofiest of all, the Common Sipo (Look a a picture of those fellas when you have the chance)

My favorite thing about the Boomslang species is that they are the most venomous opisthoglyphous (rear-fanged, features above) snakes in the world!! This means that the snake that famously killed Professor Karl Patterson Schmidt, who was studying the species at the time, is more closely related to my little snakey son, a Mexican hognose named Hermes, than to other largely feared African snakes, such as Black Mambas or Cobras!

While their diet mainly consists of other lizards as well as birds, they occasionally eat their froggy cousins and rodent adversaries. They reproduce Oviparously with clutches of about 10-25 eggs. They are diurnal and largely live in trees, hedges, and bushes.

The effects of their venom is the nastiest thing about them. They make you bleed from EVERYWHERE! first to go are your mucus membranes, such as your nose and gums. Then your eyes, then your... yknow your OTHER places. However! Don't fret too much! The Boomslang, while blindingly fast and incredibly aggressive, also has an antivenom! It is produced in South Africa.

In short, if you see a striking green fella lock eyes with you, puff out VERTICALLY (not horizontally like a cobra), run for your life! (Agressive Boomslang Above)

Keep in mind, while I am studying Herpetology, I am no scientist! If you want to know more about snakes, I suggest seeing if your local college has a herpetology lab!! Bias be damned, every herpetologist I've met has been a little awkward, but always happy to talk about snakes and their other cousins with 3 chambered hearts!

Offered Argo her first ft weaned rat... she did not go for it. I even got a ft mouse fuzzie thawed too in the same back to scent the rat. She didn't seem 100% totally disinterested but she didn't strike and kept retreating into her hide. I left it in there with her so fingers grossed she takes it.

I swear some people will act like taxidermists are skinning animals alive

A tiger recently died in a famous zoo in my country, and people are up in arms about the zoo's decision to taxidermy it for research and educational purposes

The alternative is chopping it up and burning it in a furnace but I guess that's "What the tiger would have wanted"

The tiger never talked to you or me or anyone, but I guess acting emotional about a corpse puts you on higher moral ground and that means you know the tiger better than anyone who actually took care of or researched it

Edit: Apparently people are not only planning a rally against this tiger's taxidermy, but harrassing the taxidermist in charge. This is bullshit.

I know you are busy as heck with life (I've appreciated and been impressed by your art updates through it all!), but I've been wondering if you think you'll ever breed your bloods again in the future? 👀

Yes I'm hoping to pair snakes up again this fall! I miss baby snakes SO much. (Though I'm glad I took a break lol.)
