Smoker!Dean headcanons (aka if Dean was a smoker throughout the series)

As a teenager, Dean would smoke whenever he could get his hands on a cigarette, but it was pretty rare. Money was too tight to buy them, and it wasn't worth the risk of stealing them, but occasionally, Dean was able to trade for loose cigarettes. He loved the head rush and loved feeling like an adult.

Pre-series, Dean didn't start smoking in earnest until he started doing hunts without his father. John didn't like the smoking, so Dean hid it from him. Still, money was tight, so Dean only smoked a few cigarettes a day at most. His favourite thing in the world was being whiskey buzzed and sharing a cigarette with a girl.

Dean never, ever smoked inside the Impala.

Seasons 1-2 Dean is still smoking a few cigarettes per day, properly addicted at this point, and irritable when he isn't able to get a smoke break. Sam is constantly bugging him to quit, and Dean pretends he could quit any time he wants to. Sam gets non-smoking motel rooms whenever he can, which annoys the hell out of Dean.

Season 3, with the demon deal looming, Dean starts smoking more now, and by the end of the season, he is fully chain smoking regularly. Sam finds it gross but generally allows it to slide because he knows Dean needs it.

Season 4, Dean comes back from Hell with zero physical dependence on nicotine and decides to treat it like a fresh start. He doesn't smoke. He uses his experience with smoking to try (and fail) to empathize with Sam's blood addiction.

Season 5, Dean starts smoking when he's drunk, which turns into smoking when he's stressed, which by the end of the season, when he almost says "yes" to Michael, turns into him smoking all of the time again.

When he lives with Lisa and Ben, he tries to quit for their sake, but he still sneaks a cigarette outside on really bad nights. Lisa pretends not to notice.

Season 6, the smoking continues, but not as heavy as season 5. Sam is actively annoyed about it at this point, and Dean has long stopped finding smoking to be fun.

Season 7, as Dean spirals downwards after Cas' betrayal, he smokes much more heavily. It's starting to affect him physically, especially without Cas to heal him. He starts saying things like, "I'm getting too old for this." Since he isn't able to drive the Impala for most of the season, he smokes in the cars they steal, which really bothers Sam.

In Purgatory, Dean has no choice but to quit cold turkey, which is miserable, and once he's home, he continues that streak into seasons 8 and 9, his longest smoke-free period.

Unfortunately, demon!Dean picks up smoking again, and even when he's cured, smoking becomes one of his coping mechanisms for quelling the Mark.

Seasons 11 and 12, he struggles with trying to quit, going anywhere from days to months at a time without smoking before falling back into it. When Cas dies at the end of season 12, he begins chainsmoking again along with regularly getting black-out drunk, and Sam really worries for his brother's health.

After Cas returns in season 13, Dean begins working to quit again in earnest, creating a system with Sam, Cas, and Jack's help. This time, it sticks through the end of the series, but Dean does heavily consider starting up again as he spirals towards the end of season 15.

Post-series Dean is trying to maintain being smoke-free, especially since Cas is gone and Jack is hands-off. He knows any damage he does will be permanent this time, and he doesn't particularly feel like dying of cancer. But it turns out the boredom of the world not ending is worse for his cravings than the stress was. He starts smoking weed, trying to convince himself it's a proper substitute, but eventually, he just smokes weed because he likes it.

I’m so conflicted about the smoker Dean idea because.. on one hand, yeah, i can totally see it, just one of his many unhealthy coping mechanisms, also the oral fixation, and the whole Aesthetic™ of it mmm..... he would definitely be able to enjoy a damn marlboro with such decadence that the whole ordeal turns into an act of divine pleasure 😩

on the other hand though, Dean never thought of his body as his own, it’s always a tool, a weapon, a means to an end, and while he doesn’t take particularly good care of it, also let’s note that his most prominent unhealthy habit is drinking - we know John does this too -, and the other way he constantly endangers himself is on hunts, which is, again something directly learned from John...

so i can also absolutely see a strict line here, you gotta take care of your weapon (body), make sure it functions, stitch up the wounds on it, get your 4 hrs of sleep, get some calories in, only ruin it in the ways that follow in your god’s your father’s footsteps etc. etc.

sam and dean have a 15 year age gap, dean is taking care of baby sam after being in the hunting business for his whole life, his only breaks are when he gets to just watch over his little brother. john dies when sam is 15 and dean is pissed at john for leaving him for making him into sams mother but he loves sam and never takes it out on him also sam has a habit of calling dean mom.

Sam knows he's staring. He's hyper aware of it, like he's hyper aware of how his breathing stutters and stops each time he notices he's unconsciously matched Dean's.

He's staring. At Dean's lips. The way his nostrils flare and pinch. The way his fingers kiss his lush lips each time the filter goes between them. The way the smoke curls out, until Dean can't help smirking at his own coolness and the smoke traces his Cheshire grin.

The way Dean licks his lips and Sam can't help but copy him; longingly, thirstily. He feels parched.

Before he realizes he's going to do it, Sam reaches out and nabs Dean's cigarette, closing his lips around the damp shape of Dean's mouth. Wishes it was Dean's actual mouth, and wonders in thrilling shame if Dean can tell, with the way Sam can't help staring at Dean's mouth as he inhales.

Just so you know Dean smokes cigarettes. In case you were wondering this man has a crippling nicotine addiction. Maybe it started with stress, maybe it started from watching John, maybe it started to curb his appetite when he couldn’t steal enough food for the two of them, who knows. Sam has to yell at him not to light one up in the hotel room when he first wakes up in morning. Cas takes every chance he gets healing Dean from other injuries to also take a moment to heal his lungs just a little. Dean doesn’t realize that’s what’s happening, but taking that first deep breath after Cas heals him is his favorite part every time. Aside from Cas touching him, of course. And he doesn’t smoke in the impala, obviously. But the soot and smoke cling to the leather jacket, to the cord of the samulet, to his fingertips. He always has a pack of them in his jacket, in the center console, on the night stand next to whatever bed he’s sleeping in that night. He’s not picky, he’ll smoke whatever. Marlboro, menthol, newports, doesn’t matter, as long as it’s got nicotine in it. Sam gives him so much shit about it, Dean ignores him. Cas wishes he wouldn’t, but he knows he can’t stop him. So yeah. Dean Winchester is a smoker, even if the CW is a little bitch who censors him. Takes one to know one, and I know.

Mary used to smoke. When Dean was young, she’d dip out to the porch while a casserole was in the oven, and try to cover up the smell with perfume even cheaper than the cigs. But in a cruel switch of fate, the smoke didn’t kill her. The fire did.

When Dean was thirteen, he got himself a pack by telling the corner store clerk they were for his dad. He doesn’t know if they believed him or just didn’t care, but he lit one up and just about hacked up a lung upon first inhale. He kept them tucked in the bottom of his duffle. 

His daddy might a taught him to drink, but this was just for him.

It took him until he was sixteen to find the brand his mama smoked, replicate that nostalgia-wrapped scent. By then, he had a plethora of fake ID’s to choose from. Looking back, his chest aches at how young he looked. The baby fat still clung to his cheeks, then. He must’ve looked ridiculous sucking on a cig like that.

He kept it to himself. This was his. He’d drink with John ‘till the old man passed out on the motel couch, and then he’d stand outside to smoke. One night, nineteen years old, he came back in, and John was awake again. And Dean must’ve stunk somethin’ awful, ‘cause John slurred out Mary, you know I hate it when you smell like that shit. 

He slept in the car that night and shoved the pack in a rolled-up t-shirt.

Dean wasn’t a smoker, per se. Least, he wouldn’t call himself that. He didn’t smoke ‘cause he was addicted. It just reminded him of her. How she’d smell when she picked him up to carry him to bed, and he’d bury his little face into her shirt, and inhale the scent of tobacco as he drifted back off to sleep.

It’s just a small comfort. Harmless. Sometimes he gets a little tingle in his throat and he’ll swear off ‘em for a month or so ‘till it goes away. Then a hunt’ll go bad, or John will leave, and he’ll be so fucking alone that he just needs a smoke. Take the edge off. Make him feel like he’s wrapped up in his mama’s arms again, safe and loved.

sooo meg as sam stealing liquor and cigarettes from that gas station and dean being shocked about it has me thinking about sam’s food habits again. cause he’s not as into health food in the first couple seasons as he is later on. what if because of the events of s2 he gets a bit obsessed with “clean” foods because he thinks it’ll purify his body? he’s probably not thinking about it that way, just trying to be healthy. he feels like what’s wrong with him isn’t fixable, but maybe eating clean will make him clean on the inside too. even just a little.
