The “Eastern Monarch” ablaze in Spithead, 3rd June 1859, by Arthur Wellington Fowles (1815-1883)
Built at Dundee in 1856, the full-rigged “Eastern Monarch”, 1,844 tons, was owned by Somes Brothers of London and traded regularly between Dundee and India. Early in 1859, as she was loading cargo at Karachi, she was chartered by the Indian government to bring home a large contingent of sick and wounded troops in the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny, some of whom were accompanied by their wives and children. After a cramped but otherwise uneventful voyage, “Eastern Monarch” arrived at Spithead in the early hours of 3rd June [1859] with almost 500 people aboard including 352 invalid soldiers, 30 women and 53 children. At 2.30am., about an hour after the vessel had dropped anchor, a loud explosion was heard closely followed by billowing smoke and flame. With the ship’s ports all open for ventilation, the initial fire spread rapidly; despite the valiant efforts of the officers and crew however, the blaze could not be brought under control and the ship was soon ablaze from stem to stern.
Thanks to perfect discipline amongst the troops, there was no panic and those aboard were ferried ashore by two sailing barges, “Providence “ and “Petrel”, which came alongside, as did boats from H.M. ships “Falcon” and “Flying Fish”, both anchored nearby. The prompt actions of the rescue craft saved all but eight persons but the ship herself was totally destroyed, it was believed, by the spontaneous combustion of a quantity of saltpetre amongst her cargo.

Victoria and the Chocolate Factory
“Signatures detected.”
“All of them?”
“All. Alive too, but the signal is getting weaker. We don’t know if it’s due to the technology he uses or because… well, you know.”
I grit my teeth and nodded. I knew all too well. I’d read all the files, and seen what had happened in the aftermath.
The broken homes. The broken kids.
In some ways, it was worse than Cradle, because this fucker seemed intent on humiliating the kids just as much as he wanted to make them hurt. “We found him,” Dragon said in my ear piece. “His duplicates have been detected and targeted in London and Bath. Your strike team is clear to go.”
The cold air of Oxford whipped over my forcefield as I descended, feeling the chime in my ear as Dragon disconnected and my eye lit up with gold. A quick rush of information poured into my vision and brain from Kenzie’s camera, logs of teams communicating where they didn’t feel comfortable speaking, coordinating battle plans and sharing files on the targets.
I had to ignore it all for now, blinking rapidly to swipe through vision modes, until I had the highlighted figures in view. Gold for allies and deep red for targets, the camera giving me a very basic outline of the building’s interiors and possible sources of egress.
Coming down through the clouds, I decided to leave those areas to my team; I had a means of making my own entrance.
The gun chimed above my head, lines of circuitry along the barrel and handles alighting in gold as the charge readied itself, aimed near the largest red target. A top-hat symbol with a crescent grin beneath.
Traced by whatever power source the new gun used as a battery, the gold laser tore through the sky as I flew down, illuminating wisps of moisture from the clouds on my forcefield.
It was smaller, tighter, and more concise than the original gun. The new gun was more like what Win had made to fight the Simurgh, more compact in use.
Size mattered not though, my eye camera noting how the beam of light tore through several floors of the building in mere moments.
I cut off the beam as I approached, a few hundred feet away.
I flew down at an angle, collapsing my forcefield to a near skintight level and held the gun so that it trailed behind me like a straightened scorpion’s tail, just so I could lose that extra bit of air resistance. With the angle of my flight, and my narrowed profile, I slipped into the glowing hole I made at full speed, the rings of melted steel flickering past me like a descent into hell.
I came to a stop where the laser had hit near my target, a deep smoking crater that smelled of burning licorice and cinnamon. I turned to where the red symbol stood, both of us obscured by smoke.
“I've always wanted my factory to have that rustic, industrial look. How very avant-garde of you.” The smoke began to fade, the blood red top-hat and crescent smile flickering out of focus as my target became visible to the naked eye. “At least the new ventilation will help with the smell, young dear.”
Wonka, I thought with absolute loathing. The smile on the man’s face didn’t reach his manic eyes, casually leaning on a cane, seemingly unbothered by a lightspeed spear hitting the ground not even fifty feet away from him.
Cloaked in a purple velvet jacket and adorned with a vibrant orange vest, he didn’t look much like a cape. Dark Society, the Ambassadors, and the Suits went with the professional look - even Limerick added splashes of messy color - but this didn’t feel like reinforcing a costume with high quality attire.
Which made a level of sense. He had never advertised himself as a cape.
Curly brown hair jutted out from under his hat, and a golden goose-handled cane that felt more than a touch on the nose as he loomed over me on a small circular pedestal. A perfect match for the description of William Wonka.
One of the Wonkas, at least. The others had situated themselves across the United Kingdom of Gimel, portraying themselves as kind, loving, benefactors to the community.
That had been before the missing families hit the news. Before the children were found, sans parents or guardians, dumped in alleyways or in the woods.
None of them were dead. We couldn’t even call it a mercy, with what he had done to them.
Last I had heard, Tattletale was trying to pull in favors from Semiramis to try and revert them to normal. Riley was looking over them too, asking about getting help from Chris for his parole.
A dark fucking irony, considering what his original had done.
“You going to surrender?” I asked, even though I already knew the answer. More of the factory was coming into view now; giant candy carrots with leaves that looked glossy, almost like they were made of rubber. More alien looking plants and oddly designed pillars were strewn across the floor, looking more like a greenhouse from a TV show than anything that a professional business would have.
The grass beneath our feet looked normal, but the smell of the burnt ground made me doubt it.
"Surrender?” His voice was soft and calm. He brushed some burned dust off his shoulder. “My dear, I'm afraid you misunderstand the nature of my work," he replied, twirling his cane with an eerie grace. "How nonsensical of a question to ask. Well, I suppose a little nonsense is relished for a reason. I must say, your entrance was quite spectacular, if a bit lacking in finesse."
I ignored his taunts, my gaze unwavering as I aimed the gun at him. He tapped his cane and a glass tube flashed up to encase him, glittering in the factory lights. The way the light was refracting off the glass gave me pause and the madman tipped his hat, “Little surprises around every corner, but nothing dangerous. To me, at least. For you? Well…”
A flick of his wrist had a silver flute in his hand-
I fired a warning shot, the laser missing the tube on purpose, wanting to slow down whatever he was planning.
-and continued to play the instrument, a small melody, unbothered by the attack. He gave the instrument a twirl and it vanished beneath his coat.
Distorted echoes of laughter and screams seemed to linger in the air as the melody and blast of my laser died down, accompanied by music and the stomp of feet.
“Your fucked up game ends here," I declared, rising up and flying closer to the glass tube. “The heroes have you surrounded. Your duplicates are being hunted down.”
Wonka merely tilted his head. "Oh, my dear, you're not here to end anything. Can’t you hear it? The sound of dreamers and their fitful nightmares? Here they come, right… now."
As he spoke, the shadows within the factory stirred. Short men appeared, their skin orange and hair a sickening shade of green. Each one bore an expression devoid of any emotion, their eyes dead, even as they sized me up.
Some of them were marching, while others somersaulted or vaulted from behind the candy colored jungle, adroit for their small size.
They sang, and music seemed to emanate from nowhere, reminding me of Nursery’s power.
Oompa Loompas, doopity doo,
Here's a lot of trouble, coming for you.
Oompa Loompas, doopity dee,
If you are wise, then now you must flee.
I turned and opened fire on the minions, only for them to cartwheel out of the way. Others were quick to put obstacles in the beam’s way, including the candy carrots that seemed slower to melt than solid steel.
We’d captured a few of these Loompas in the past few days, canvassing the remnants of his artificial wilderness in the sewers of London. The ones we let our guards down were quick to duplicate as the song progressed and were surprisingly adroit. Cruel as well, considering what they did to their still-living victims.
The Loompas that weren’t eradicated were quick to calcify, turning into what was best described as hyper-dense rock candy. Apparently, other locations would have different variations of the Loompas.
Another blast at a group of Loompas trying to aim a fire-hose sized vine my way, scorching chocolate spurting out before being vaporized.
Fast little fuckers.
And they were quickly surrounding me by the dozens.
What do you get when you mess with fate?
A clash of powers, a bitter debate.
What do you get when you challenge the stars?
A battle unfolding, bearing new scars.
You've entered our world of whimsical glee,
But beware, dear Victoria, of the chaos you'll see.
Heroes and villains, in a dance so divine,
Yet meddling too much might- “Gack!”
One of the Oompa Loompas fell to the ground, thrashing as barbed wire exploded out of his mouth. Pieces of a glass marble embedded his eyes.
“Wham! Bam! Shazam! Kablam!” Finale shouted, launching her own barrage of musical blasts, sending the small minions flying about as their empowered song was thrown off-key.
The other Majors were arriving, Withdrawal blasting Loompas with goop that seemed alive, latching onto anything that moved. Caryatid was acting as a shield for Finale, unharmed as a trio of Loompas tried to bash her head in with a giant lollipop.
Sveta was in the rafters, tossing things at any unaware minion. Children were in her grasp.
The survivors.
“Oompa Loompa, doopity dee,” Limerick sang with the most bored teenage voice I had ever heard, putting away his slingshot. “Here's a new phrase, now listen to me. Oompa Loompa, doopity doo. You can’t do jack shit when we say fuck you.”
He tossed back a knife so casually that one almost would have thought it was reckless, had it not impaled a Loompa through the temple, causing him to fall atop a nearby squad and douse them all in a burning candy puddle from one of the laser blasts.
Loompas turned to him, and I got the distinct impression that his singing pissed them off more than the killing.
I turned to Wonka; chin raised.
“They say that looks can kill,” Wonka tutted. “But it seems being blindsided is what has done me in.”
He smiled suddenly, “Come then. You and I have so little to do with so much time.”
I charged him, gun at the ready, Fragile One baring her teeth.
His child victims called the factory a ‘world of pure imagination’.
I would make sure to wake him up to reality.

If we wanna be technically correct the vast majority of the heat in the Underground system comes from the machinery, the trains, switches, signal and power lines, pretty much anything that does something churns out heat. Now on some lines this isn't an issue, at least not yet, mostly the oldest lines and newest; the newer lines were often designed with some awareness and consideration to this problem, so they surface more often and have ventilation shafts at pretty regular intervals; the oldest lines have those same features, but for entirely different reasons, the oldest London Underground lines ran using steam engines, so they absolutely had to be able to vent steam and smoke or the tunnels would very quickly become unlivable. The real bastard of a problem that no one seems to have a good solution for yet is that even with the extra ventilation it still only slows the process down, because no matter how quickly you cycle out hot air, some amount of heat is going to pass into the clay and once it's in the clay it's much much slower to move back out. Given the scale and magnitude of heat that needs to be moved to fix the problem, it's very likely that the London Underground will have to become water cooled at some point, nothing else can transfer that amount of heat faster than it builds up over the kind of distance and area it needs to handle. Unfortunately combining underground tunnels full of high voltage electrics and water is also a fantastic way to cause all sorts of even worse problems, so nobody has come up with a workable solution yet.
if you've ever used the London Underground you might have noticed that it often gets uncomfortably hot. the reason for this is actually that its builders dug too greedily & too deep and as a result the trains are very close to the fires of hell. hope that helps.

How to Improve Air Quality in Your Home with Ventilation Installation
Indoor air quality is a critical factor that often gets overlooked. The air inside your home can be more polluted than outdoor air due to allergens, dust, and other contaminants. Effective ventilation installation is one of the best ways to ensure fresh, clean air throughout your home. In this blog, we will explore how proper ventilation can help improve your home’s air quality and why it’s essential to invest in the right ventilation system.
Understanding Ventilation Installation
Ventilation installation refers to setting up a system that allows air to flow into and out of your home, ensuring the continuous exchange of stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. There are different types of ventilation systems to consider, such as natural ventilation (using windows and vents), mechanical ventilation (using fans or air handling units), and hybrid systems that combine both. Each system offers unique benefits, and understanding these options is key to choosing the best one for your home.
Benefits of Proper Ventilation for Air Quality
A well-installed ventilation system offers numerous benefits, especially when it comes to improving air quality:
Reduction of Pollutants and Allergens: Ventilation helps remove indoor pollutants like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pet dander, and smoke. These contaminants can lead to respiratory issues if not properly managed.
Moisture Control: Excess moisture in your home can encourage mold growth, which is harmful to your health. Ventilation installation effectively removes moisture from high-humidity areas, preventing the conditions that lead to mold and mildew.
Prevention of Stale Air: Good ventilation prevents the buildup of stale air in your home, replacing it with fresh air. This ensures that the air you breathe is constantly refreshed and free from odors.
Choosing the Right Ventilation System for Your Home
Choosing the right ventilation system depends on several factors:
Home Size: Larger homes may require more advanced systems, such as mechanical ventilation or heat recovery ventilation, which can efficiently manage air exchange across multiple rooms.
Budget: The cost of installation will vary depending on the complexity of the system. It’s important to find a balance between your budget and the benefits of different systems.
Energy Efficiency: With rising energy costs, it’s essential to consider energy-efficient systems that will save you money in the long run. Many modern ventilation systems are designed to minimise energy consumption while still providing optimal air quality.
It is advisable to consult with a professional to ensure you choose a system that suits your home and needs.
How Ventilation Installation Works with Air Conditioning Systems
When it comes to areas like air conditioning London, effective ventilation installation is even more crucial. Proper ventilation ensures that the air circulating in your home remains fresh, which complements the cooling and heating capabilities of your air conditioning system. A well-balanced ventilation system reduces the load on your air conditioner by maintaining consistent air flow, allowing the system to operate efficiently.
In fact, many air conditioning systems today are designed to work alongside ventilation systems to filter and circulate clean air throughout the home. The combination of both systems creates a comfortable indoor environment while improving the overall air quality.
Conclusion
Investing in ventilation installation is one of the best decisions you can make to improve the air quality in your home. It works seamlessly with your air conditioning system to ensure fresh, clean, and breathable air. At Hamilton Air Conditioning Ltd, we specialise in both air conditioning and ventilation installation services. Our team of experts can help you choose and install the perfect system for your home, ensuring better air quality and a more comfortable living space. Today as I walked past the escalator which takes you down to the metro station of Tomberg, I caught an ever so familiar whiff of the smell inside the metro station. I can't exactly put my finger on whether it is the tiles inside that produce this specific smell, the ventilation system or the industrial metallic elements present in the escalator itself. I was reminded of the perfumery of Kerosene fragrances. Unknown pleasures and Summer of '84 to be exact and the few reviews of them that I read. "Smells exactly like London in the 80s... When you could smoke inside cafés, the leather seating.." Obviously I could not relate to such observations or judge their legitimacy, since I never lived in the 80s, or even smelled any environment that smelled like these two aforementioned fragrances. They seemed like two imaginative fragrance experimentations of their own. Conceptually considered, the reimagination of a 'scent profile' into a fragrance; a material chemical composition which you can carry around, spray and experience at will is a form of cultural preservation, much like photography and videography. But it surely fulfills an alternative narrative function, one much more intimate and perhaps "insignificant" on a grander scale. I.e. there is not much historical "evidence" to be extracted from how a specific environment smelled for it to be a relevant field of preservation such as visual media analysis. In this way, can fragrances cross over to the field of media? Fragrances certainly do awake an alternative and obscure avenue of memories. Having sampled Jo Malone's Blackberry & Bay a few years ago, I was reminded of a classmate's house that I slept over at when I was 6. My parents' house still has Ralph Lauren and Gucci bottles bought from airport tax frees during my upper secondary years. Just sniffing at the cap of these bottles instantly makes me remember something; the season it was when I wore it, the music that I was listening to at the time... This is made even more so significant by the fact that I barely have any photographs of myself from my upper secondary and high school years. Fragrances absolutely help you not only to read and recount memories in a more abstract and sensual way than the over-praised two-dimensional evidence provided by visual mediums, but they've made me remember things that photographs or videos couldn't.

Wednesday and Thursday, July 24-25 - in transit to Australia
It was a very long day (actually two days because we jumped the date line), but we finally made it to Australia, along with all our luggage. By the time we got to our hotel and crashed, we had been up around 30 hours, since we didn't get much sleep on either leg.
We first flew from Salt Lake to Honolulu, flying a route that took us just north of Lake Tahoe and Point Reyes - much of the way the view was obscured by clouds or smoke. Our layover in Hawaii was just long enough for a quick meal and fresh air between the terminals - warm and humid, but nice clear air.
The leg to Australia, however, was longer than originally scheduled (about 10-1/2 hours) and when we arrived, we had to stay on the plane for another 15 minutes while they disinfected the plane and us, spraying the bags in the overhead bins, and running stuff through the ventilation system. As a result, by the time we got through passport control, waited for and gathered our luggage, took the train to downtown Sydney and walked a long block to our hotel, it was close to 10 PM. But the bed is comfortable and sleep will come easily.
Worst thing about our trip was probably the plane meal after leaving Honolulu. The best might have been the fact that it only cost 66 cents for the train into downtown.
Notes on the pictures - Hawaii looked pretty nice from the air, and the ANA plane was painted to be a sea turtle, although the shape is all wrong. The underground train stop near our hotel bore a strong resemblance to stations in London. Lots of fun vintage advertisements on the walls, too.
Tomorrow we plan to explore Sydney around our hotel, especially if the predicted overnight rain moves out. There is certainly a lot to see and do here.

How does pollution affect your eye vision?
Introduction:
Pollution can be harmful to your vision, which is your eye health. Fine particles of dust, smoke, and chemicals in the air cause irritation, dryness, and even damage to the sensitive structures in the eyes. The consequences of pollution on the eyes are witnessed by eye surgeon in London clinics, which leads them to seek protection for the eyes against the hazards of pollution.
Reasons why you should protect your eyes:
Air Pollution and Eye Irritation: When the air is filled with smog, dust, or other particles, our eyes become itchy and scratchy. The reason behind the discomfort is when the pollutants come into contact with the sensitive parts of our eyes, causing irritation and sometimes redness.
Chemical Exposure and Eye Damage: The environment can expose a person to harmful chemicals that affect the eyes. The function of these dangerous chemicals, like industrial pollutants or household cleaners, is to irritate our eyes, cause a burning sensation, and cause serious eye injury if they come into contact with our eyes.
Particulate Matter and Eye Health: The particles of particulate matter are very small and suspended in the air, for example, dust and smoke. When we inhale the air polluted with these airborne particles, we might experience irritation of the eyes, followed by discomfort, redness, and even more serious problems like infections or damage to the surface of the eyes.
UV Radiation and Eye Protection: The eyes can be damaged as the eyes are exposed to the UV light from the sun. Repeated exposure to UV without protection for an extended period can increase the chances of cataract formation, macular degeneration, and other eye problems. A pair of sunglasses with UV protection and a hat can provide enhanced protection for our eyes from these effects.
Water Pollution and Eye Infections: Water pollution results in the tainting of water sources that host harmful pathogens and bacteria. Once these pollutants go into our eyes, there is a possibility of infections like conjunctivitis or keratitis. Ensuring access to water that is clean and safe is an important aspect of preventing infections and maintaining good eye health.
Indoor Air Quality and Eye Comfort: Insufficient indoor air quality as a consequence of pollutants like dust, dander, and chemicals can lead to eye discomfort. Airborne irritants may result in dry eyes, itching, or even redness. Improving ventilation, using air purifiers, and keeping indoor spaces well-cleaned can help soothe symptoms and enable one to see clearly and have better health for the eyes.
Prevention and Protection: To shield your eyes from pollution, wear sunglasses and thus protect yourself from UV rays and reduce exposure to irritants. Wear eyewear in hazardous environments. Keep your eyes clean by rinsing them with clean water frequently. Frequent eye examinations reveal pollution-related issues early.
Conclusion: Appreciation of the effect of air pollution on eye health is a key element in prevention. Regular eye examinations and the adoption of safety measures are needed. For a high-end eye surgeon in London, opt for an experienced eye surgeon to guarantee a good treatment procedure leading to the restoration of vision. Optimal use of money prevents pollution-related health risks and improves vision and overall health.

Smooth Renting: A Handy Maintenance Checklist For Every Landlord In London
Being a landlord comes with its responsibilities, the most important being maintenance and repairs. In order to attract high-value renters and to get a steady return on your investment through the years, it becomes essential to maintain your property such that it provides a liveable space for your renters. As a landlord, this is one of the most time-consuming duties. It is also capital-intensive, and one can plan for these expenses by allocating funds and setting your rent to cover the costs. Building relationships with reliable contractors and maintenance providers is also essential in a repair situation requiring prompt response.
This do-it-yourself mode of property management can also get overwhelming, especially if you are investing in property for the first time. One way to navigate this would be to outsource these duties to a property management company, which will take care of all property-related tasks, including regular maintenance and repairs. Regardless of the route you take, our handy guide offers several maintenance checklists to remember regarding your rental property.
First Impressions
The external facade of your property creates the first impression of its value for tenants. Keep an eye out for cracks in walls, peeling paint, and any other signs of structural damage. Doors and windows must be sealed properly to prevent drafts and energy wastage. Make sure that the roof and gutters are inspected regularly to prevent leaks and water damage from taking your tenants by surprise.
Comfort First
One of the most important aspects for any tenant looking to rent a property is the comfort and ease of living within that space. Electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC systems are crucial in this aspect. It is important to regularly inspect pipes, taps, and drains for leaks or blockage. As a rule of thumb, plumbing issues must be addressed promptly to avoid structural damage to the property and inconvenience for tenants. Heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems must be periodically inspected and serviced to ensure efficient functioning. Clean filters help maintain indoor air quality and contribute to the quality of life for your tenants. Likewise, for electrical systems, ensure your outlets, switches, etc, do not have any faults and that all electrical systems comply with local safety rules and regulations at all times.
Prioritise Tenant Safety
Ensure that all locks at entry points across your property are well maintained at all times. Consider investing in security alarm systems as an enhanced safety measure if possible. Fire extinguishers are crucial in emergencies, so make sure the extinguishers are in a working condition and are easy to access. It would also help to train tenants on proper usage. Smoke alarms in key areas around your property are important to ensure safety for your tenants and your investment – ensure the batteries are replaced as required.
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Regular inspections can help you catch issues before they snowball into a money-draining problem for your investment. Tenants also play a crucial role in highlighting any issues – make sure to build a positive relationship with your tenants and keep communication lines open at all times so that tenants feel free to report any issues with maintenance.
As a landlord in London, staying on top of your property maintenance needs can go a long way to save time and money with the added bonus of tenant satisfaction. A proactive approach and prioritising regular upkeep of your property investment will enhance the longevity of your investment while also attracting prospective renters.

The mast of a ship that sailed smooth for so many years eventually snapped. Kaz held to Emre during the uptick in an already unpredicted storm. A devastating typhoon. The origins begun thousands of miles away as Ani's footsteps beat heavily down the dead-end street away from Kaz's car. What he should've said and gave and done for Ani stayed in the wet corners of his eyes, salted like the ocean she resided in. The lump in the throat were bleached bones, and hollow of a tight chest the space those bones sank into.
With his gaze no longer submerged under spontaneous tears, he saw Emre. The old and stubborn I'm fine helped to piece Kaz together again. Grateful for the simple responses from Emre, as those worked a certain magic too. He nodded to agree. "Yeah. Probably wanted to like you. Would've come around." If she was there, as if a ghost had a right to stay anywhere on the island. Admittedly, Ani certainly caught on to Kaz and Emre quick, or so he imagined. "She would've started to ask a lot of questions. Wanted to get to know you. Put you in one of her short films for sure."
Emre made putting one foot in front of the other easier. He gripped Kaz's hand and tempted with a surprise, and Kaz's instinct to pull away subsided. "Oh shit, wait. Your hand." A hard punch had been thrown inside the teleporter. "That's gotta hurt. We'll take care of it."
And they ended up back at the start, in the corridor surrounded by those little boxes of dorms. Kaz stopped short of slipping into the pod but took a peek inside: a den of bright and wild colors, a cozy kind of crash pad. The ventilation system was turned on followed by the grand reveal. He couldn't help but smile, as he followed the filtration system and eyed the pipe at the centerpiece.
"Fuck me, when did you do all this?" A beat. "You took a trip out for all this, didn't you. You little shit." Kaz finally took off his shoes and ducked in for a closer look. What happened in the teleporter room still hung over them but Emre's surprise would sink them into a beautiful spot to recover. "Fucking luxury. Lazing around in here smoking. It's your own lounge."
Kaz investigated the intricate etching on the shisha pipe and thumbed valves and nozzles. All the while, he listened. A frown formed, settled deeper, and then softened. His fingers toyed with pieces of coconut charcoal in a bowl. "She knew how to stand up for herself though, didn't she." A half-smile, eyes still on the soon to be coals. The grin flickered out, with Emre locked in on his one pathway in London.
"Things get heated, Emre. I wouldn't want anyone to see my arguments with old girlfriends either." Kaz felt eyes on him, so he met them. "So mature, who would've guessed it from Emre Akbar."
"But it's fondness, isn't it. You two. It was easy to see." Kaz checked the supplies gathered for the pipe. He guessed a coil hot plate was meant to turn the charcoal into coals and went about it. Thoughts that tumbled through his head began to subside and stored for another time. "Glad you were there. Don't think I'd want anyone else to see that."
Kaz was responsive, his arms slung loosely around Emre first, then tightening. Kaz pattered kisses along Emre's nose, lush lips soft and warm as ever, wicking Emre's tears. His arms like a forcefield locking tighter around Emre after the intruder was barked away. A possessive ferocity flared in Emre, the sort he'd usually only undam for his brother.
The way Kaz held onto him signified more than mere tolerance of Emre's passionate display. They could both afford an aftermath after reliving those memories. Just like an 'aftershine', Emre was greedy for jeweled luxuries like this. Space to breathe, yet nestled tightly. The one person on the island who Emre could burrow into, bury his grief.
The electric hum of the teleports around them; but Emre focussed on the telltale thrum of Kaz's heart pounding against his ribcage, louder than any artificial din. Or maybe it was Emre's heart; the adrenalin of reliving Melody, of helplessly watching Ani flee to her demise. Emre's instincts inflamed like an infection: hold on, don't let go.
He momentarily misinterpreted Kaz's soft apology. Sorry that Emre had to witness Ani and Kaz's fight? Or that all this had to happen at all? The glistening in Kaz's eyes flickered with that eerie blue-glow, fat droplets on the edges of his dark lashes. If Kaz didn't hastily knuckle his eyes dry, Emre would've leaned in to lick the wet away. His mouth watered as Kaz elaborated on his 'sorry'.
What Emre had to go through. 'You should be apologizing to yourself, luv', Emre thought, but he just nodded and swallowed. "I'm sorry too, man. Same for me, yeah. Like it happened...happened yesterday."
An admission - Kaz was not okay - gave Emre some relief. He knew Kaz had a dizzying complexity; but the way Kaz compulsively pieced himself back together before Emre's eyes in seconds, like it was necessary. Like Kaz had to make himself impossible to dredge, like he was unworthy of being uncovered. He grew desultory when Emre requested access to his history; how did he feel having Emre witness more of it? Watching Kaz drive his sister to unknown locations and unknown people, bloody and angry and proud.
Emre didn't want to confirm that the island's Ani was the real Ani. The island brought Ani back for Kaz; Emre believed it was her. But in that short time, whatever Ani's ghost had broken down in Kaz, he brutally reconstructed himself on instinct, as if even he didn't want to see what lay hidden under his cement. Where Emre was a landmine, Kaz was fortress; with Kaz stood on the outside.
"I'm glad to meet her. You didn't have to, but you did, innit. Reckon she understood too, clever little thing." Emre rasped. "Reckon she wanted to like me, even." For you. But Emre's memory with Melody had obliterated Ani's wary pleasantry; and Emre couldn't blame the girl for it. She only wanted to protect her brother from a badman. Fucking hell, Kaz.
Somehow Kaz managed to hang a smile on his lips. It fit tight around the corners, but lingered for lack of any other reaction. The way Kaz could pull himself back together was stunning, but almost terrifying.
"Yeah. You know me, man, proper chatterbox with you," Emre took his hand, led them towards the dormitories. "I got something for us, yeah. A surprise." Kaz needed a surprise.
Within the dorms, Emre returned them to his and Walid's short hallway. Walid's hoard of collected electronics spread over a couple of the pods. But Emre had claimed a couple pods himself, since no one else was willing to live near Walid.
Emre crept into a pod adjoining his sleeping one, which was padded out with plush mats and pillows and cushions so colourful they almost looked garish. There was a circled off area in the middle. He turned on the ventilation fan first, then tugged a silk sheet off a polished up shisha pipe.
"Don't got beer, but I got this, yeah? Is mostly set up, I made Walid rig the pod's air filtration and that. Just got to prepare the hashish and coals and water. Give us a hand then."
A pause, as Emre hoped Kaz would fold into the pod to join him. He spoke up; Kaz needed more story. Maybe even wanted closure, somehow, for someone. "I remember we made up, me and Melz. And she was right, obvi - she didn't know but I know I had Iyaz, I couldn't allow a little baby into that world. It was madness to think we could just quit that life and raise a fucking happy bloody family, and Melz knew it. A good head on her, that girl." Emre shrugged, as he filled the bowl with water. "I get - I get pissed easily, I say stupid things. Cruel. But it don't mean nothing, does it."
Emre looked up at Kaz. "We forgave each other, we carried on for better or worse. Bloody mature of us, innit. How'd we manage that."

So maybe last Sherlock story, I’m out of ideas for now, and happy that it’s out of my system, but I had fun writing it !
I lke insecure idiots in love
Sometimes London was terribly quiet for several days. No crime, no mystery, no problem. It was a great relief for the police, and a real nightmare for Sherlock Holmes, whose brain needed daily occupation to keep it from rotting.
Before his marriage, when these kinds of mishaps happened, he would go to the dark streets of the city to participate in clandestine fights, or he would buy cocaine. At the worst times he used opium. It was all behind him now, because he didn't want to worry his dear wife, Y/N.
He still had the experiences left. All fields were then open to him, especially science, his desk being always covered with books, vials, strange products. Always concerned about his health, Y/N passed by to tidy up when he wasn't looking, opening the window to ventilate and making sure he was safe. It was truly lovely.
Sherlock's last experiment was now over, the few clients who had come to see him had no interesting case for him, and the detective was starting to get bored. He had to find something, quickly, before he lost his mind.
It was at this point that Y/N walked past him, with his coat, to take it to Mrs. Hudson and ask her to wash it. It had been a while since the coat needed it, she asked her husband to take care of it many times, but it still had not been done, and so his wife had given in. She would very often give in to Sherlock's whims and infantile attitude. It gave him an idea.
He had already thought about it, because he had given this test to everyone he had met. A test of patience. Mycroft was the one who always got angry first, over trivial things. Enola didn't like that he spoke badly about women, even though she guessed what his purpose was. Their smarter mother hid her annoyance behind a smile, but he knew she hated that he put her books in the wrong place.
His family, Scotland Yard detective, Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, his comrades when he was still in school, everyone had taken this test. So it was Y/N's turn.
Sherlock started with little things, leaving his things lying around the apartment, not answering when she talked to him, smoking in the living room, having ridiculous requests, but each time his wife remained calm, dignified, acting like the perfect wife she was.
The next step was to upset her, with remarks or criticisms. It was more delicate, because Sherlock didn't want to hurt her, and added to that he had nothing to reproach to Y/N. So he would comment on her outfits, he would notice when she said something wrong, he would sigh if she wasn't going fast enough. But instead of slapping him like he deserved, his wife apologized before trying to correct her behaviour.
A normal husband would then have thought that he had married a saint, that he could be very happy about it, and that there was no need to continue this stupid experience. But Sherlock was anything but normal. He needed to know what was going to piss off Y/N, to know her limits, so as not to cross them inadvertently. He was obviously taking a big risk, as she could get very angry with this test, even more so if she found out it was a test, but not knowing seemed even worse for the man. Sherlock needed to know everything.
"My sweet, it's been a while since we last had lunch together, away from the house." he said while he was getting dress. "My brother suggested a very nice restaurant to me, we could have lunch there."
"Oh, Sherlock, I'd love to !"
"Unfortunately I have to take care of a case this morning, but you will just have to wait for me in front, I will meet you there at noon, then we can walk in the park."
The proposal delighted Y/N, and then Sherlock knew she could only scold him when he didn't show up. He even decided to worsen the situation by not returning during the night either, without preparing the slightest excuse.
He knew he had "won" when he arrived in the living room the next day. The fire was not lit, his cup of tea and his newspaper were not prepared on the table, his desk had not been put away. What a victory indeed… Sherlock suddenly felt a little foolish, hoping that she wasn't gone forever, that she had just taken refuge with friends, but that she would come back soon for an explanation. They would definitely argue, then she would forgive him, because she loved him, and he would never do it again. But... what if she didn't come back ?
A cough sounded from their bedroom then, and Sherlock rushed forward, finding Y/N in their bed. Asleep, she didn't react when he called her, nor when he panicked when he felt the warmth on her forehead. She was hot, her breathing was difficult, her perspiration was excessive. A bad fever, or worse.
"Mrs. Hudson !" he cried, while taking another blanket from the closet to cover her. "Call a doctor, now !"
Her condition was a little worrying, but the doctor tried to remain optimistic, saying that she needed rest and warmth. If she was lucky, it was just a flu that would pass very quickly. Sherlock, not believing in luck, stayed with her day and night, even when Detective Lestrade finally brought him a worthy investigation.
His poor Y/N had horrible nightmares, she kept crying, calling for him, clinging to him but not waking up to see that he was there, hugging her and whispering reassuring words. Sherlock couldn't leave her.
"No, please don't give up on me…" she sobbed against his shoulder.
"Never my love. You are more precious than anything."
"I'll be nice. I'll do whatever you want..."
"You are already perfect, my dear. Calm down."
"Miss Harrison... I did what Miss Harrison said, so... No, Sherlock, I can do better !"
His little sister had quickly told him about that miserable school for young girls Mycroft had made her go to. Y/N had been there too, like all the fine ladies in the country. The teaching was as pointless as it was archaic. Luckily Y/N had been smart enough not to always listen, learning about the world, reading all the books, cultivating her personality, which made her the most admirable and lovable woman in Sherlock's eyes.
However, there were sentences that had disturbed her. Miss Harrison had certainly told her girls what not to do if they didn't want their husbands to hate them. That men would insult them, hit them, or even leave them if they didn't do as they said. Good wives were obedient, they stayed in their place and never complained. This was how Y/N acted with Sherlock then.
She already found herself too dumb compare to the great detective, afraid that one day he would be terribly bored with her, so she couldn't afford not to do everything to please him, even when he behaved like this a child. Sherlock had been blind, and he waited until she finally woke up to get the ridiculous idea out of her head.
"Sherl... Sherlock ?" she said with some difficulty when the fever subsided a little and she opened her eyes.
"I'm here. I'll always be here. Forgive me, I acted like a fool, a mediocre husband. You have every right to say no to me, to disagree, to get upset if I behaves badly."
"I don't mind… most of the time. I know you're different. I know you'll take my remarks, but you've got a lot of work to do, so I don't want to stop you from thinking because of some trivialities."
"Nothing is futile when it comes from you." he said kissing her on the forehead. "I need to know when I'm hurting you, or when you don't approve of something. I... I don't always see it, if you don't tell me. Or too late. The few friends I thought I had ran away from me, calling me a freak, because I couldn't spot their limits. I always test people's patience, even without doing it on purpose. And often I don't care, because I don't know them, I'll never see them again, they don't matter to me. But the ones I love, I… I don't want to lose them. I don't want to lose you. I shouldn't have made that experience."
Y/N stared at him for a long time without saying anything, probably to be sure it wasn't the fever that was playing a trick on her. Bad point, her dear husband had purposely been obnoxious to her, not coming to join her as planned, while it was raining. He certainly hadn't even noticed the rain, nor thought that she would wait for him for several hours like a devoted wife, convinced that he would eventually arrive as promised. Good point, he loved her. He didn't want her to go, as she didn't want him to go. They were just two idiots.
She sighed, before smiling and kissing him tenderly. Then she gently patted his cheek.
"My darling, I'm quite upset that I waited hours in the rain and the cold for you to join me, when you had planned from the start not to come."
"You... You mean it's my fault if you... Oh, my god..."
"I'm not done, so don't talk. I forgive you this time, because I know you're deeply sorry, but I still want you to take care of me like a queen for at least one week. And no case during that time !"
"Your wish is my command."
Sherlock obeyed, although he then missed several exciting crimes which were solved by Enola, who came to brag and taunt him to punish him for what he had done to his wife. He continued to act as a true gentleman all the same, outside of the investigations of course, but always being respectful towards Y/N, thanking her whenever she took care of him, even if it was only with a growl, not looking at her as he analyzed clues. She knew how to be satisfied with it, her qualities compensating for the faults of her beloved husband.

JOHANNESBURG, June 29 (Reuters) - Twenty-one youngsters found dead in a tavern on South Africa's east coast over the weekend may have died by poisoning from a gas leak, a source close to the investigation said on Wednesday.
The deaths of the youths in a popular nightspot outside the city of East London unleashed an outpouring of grief in a poor community, while some relatives of the victims have expressed anger that weeks of calls to shut down the tavern went unheeded. All were teenagers, the youngest a 13-year-old girl. There were also several survivors, some of whom were taken to hospital, and others unharmed.
A spokesperson for the forensic team declined to comment on any aspect of the investigation until the final report is out.
Eastern Cape's provincial government said in a statement "autopsies have been performed on the 21 deceased young people and samples have been sent to a lab ... for investigation."
The incident is still shrouded in mystery. Investigators have been combing the scene for clues as to how exactly the youths died. Authorities had earlier ruled out a stampede, saying they were probably accidentally poisoned by something they ate, drank or smoked.
However, the source, who declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, told Reuters by telephone that investigators were currently working on the theory that the youths were poisoned by gas in a ground-floor room that was poorly ventilated.
He said testing was underway to determine whether the deaths were from carbon monoxide poisoning, possibly from burning propane gas or another petroleum product inside the pub.
There was a strange chemical smell coming off the bodies when they were dissected, said the source, but it was not clear which chemical it was. Police were examining all appliances in the venue, he added.
The Eastern Cape health department was quoted in local media on Tuesday saying some of the victims admitted to hospital complained of symptoms such as chest pains and back ache.
TV stations showed a handful of angry residents of the Scenery Park neighbourhood where the deaths occurred protested outside the tavern, which had its license revoked on Monday.
