Hey. Hey look at me. *shakes you by the shoulders* Don't buy a fucking Vizio smart tv. I know they're cheap. They're cheap for a reason. This thing floats banner ads across my screen while I'm watching tv. The home screen is nothing but ads. It takes 20 minutes just to find the app you want to open because it's so lagged down by all the ads. The buttons don't do what they're supposed to. It will reset your shit everytime it updates which is every other day. Sometimes it has a completely different layout for no reason. please get literally anything else

why is a smart kitchen just twitter posting and phone adverts and capitalist garbage?

literally you can store so much stuff on a QR code. scan it with your phone and your microwave and oven can knock heads to figure out when to start so everything's cooked by the same time. have them notify you when to add stuff to the oven, or when food in your cupboards are going to expire. let me automatically track how much i am eating rather than have to squint and do data entry.

while we're making an open-source QR standard, why should i have to check local guidelines for recycling? why can my phone not go "oh that's plastic 32" and Tell Me? why do i have to speak some specific language to know this food has an allergen in it???

I really want to emphasize one point that isn't highlighted as well in the above comments: when each appliance has a proprietary app, an independent smart system, a separate cloud storage solution, many of them fail as the company does.

This is easy to spot as Amazon or Google releases a new smart product or service and then discontinues it within 2–3 years, but as it becomes more normalized to have more home appliances that require an app, it becomes increasingly likely that the software for that appliance is abandoned and eventually no longer compliant with the latest Android/iOS update, and you need to either keep an older device (with an older version of iOS/Android) on hand to manage that app or have to replace a mechanically functional device that simply won't function without a goddamn unnecessary app.

It might sound petty or stubborn to stick with analog tech in some arenas, but ten years, fifteen years down the line when the company behind your thermostat either decides thermostats aren't profitable enough and they want to stick to other smart appliances or they go under and no one is around to work on the app to manage those older thermostat systems... Who replaces those? Who has to pay for the thermostat to be replaced with an analog one or a thermostat from a company with a functional app? Once the company is defunct, it's a household expense for the person living with a thermostat that mechanically should function and yet has a tiny, breakable, critical fail point at its core because it was designed that way.
