I am still thinking about the absurdity voice commands

Increasingly, I think buttons are the language of the computer. Right? You push the "Z" key, and a little data packet gets transmitted that the computer understands is the letter Z. Mathematically speaking, it cannot be anything other than Z. They aren't even reciving the letter Z, they're receiving "0101 1010". Beyond a shadow of a doubt, that is Z. "0101 1001" can't be Z, because that's Y. "0101 1011" can't be Z, because that's the open bracket symbol. "0101 1010" is Z. There is nothing else it can be. Eight immutable bits. Not even bytes, bits. The smallest data on earth.

It is a very simple communication. A human can even straight up just write out "0101 1010". The computer would still know that's the letter Z. We speak their language very easily, because we invented it, and we invented it to be as simple as it can be for what it does, because that is what makes computers fast.

On the other hand, computers do not speak our language. When a human being vocalizes the letter "Z", the computer does not understand that. It doesn't know what that means. The irony being that we have to speak the computer language, in great orders of magnitude, for the computer to understand the human vocalization of "Z".

And it takes the computer great effort to do this, on top of everything else. The "Z" key on your keyboard uses so little electricity that (depending on the keyboard) just pushing the key generates enough power to successfully transmit the signal. All it takes is three-fourths of an inch. Again: simple. Downright elegant, even. A modern marvel of engineering.

For the computer to understand the human voice, speech recognition software measurably takes up many watts. The better the software, the more wattage it uses. If you start getting in to AI, something like Google's speech transcription uses so much electricity that the system needs to be water cooled due to how much heat the electricity generates.

And all for what? So that sometimes when I say "Z", the computer hears "C" or "D" or maybe even "E". So many factors can interfere with that. Background noise, other people speaking in the room, the quality of a microphone, the distance the microphone is from the speaker, the acoustic reverb of the room, whether the person is directly facing the microphone or not, whether or not the person has an accent or a speech impediment... The computer, understandably, gets confused. It is being asked to speak a language that is unlike the language it was designed to understand. You are giving it this massive stream of data, ten thousand times longer than the keystroke, and asking it to figure out where a letter of the alphabet is being said.

But all you had to do was walk over and push the "Z" key for it to know exactly what letter it is, in crystal clarity, perfectly, exactly, precisely, every single time you press it.

And voice commands are somehow supposed to be better.
