Smart Classroom? Digital Classroom? 1980 Vs Now
Tumblr media
What is a Smart Classroom / Digital Classroom?
When technology is introduced in the classroom it is called technology-enabled education or education using digital Aids.
I am an 80’s Kid. I grew up in a traditional chalk and blackboard environment and being a topper of class, I was forced to sit in the first lane taking all the chalk dust onto my face and uniform. Of course, this does not have to do with this context, just I wanted you to remember that I grew up in the traditional education system.
English and Telugu were okay, but when biology, physics, and chemistry were taught it was a fun time for us. Because our teacher used to draw a diagram and she used to take 15 minutes and our class was 40 minutes duration. After drawing she could get only 25 minutes times to explain.
While the teacher was drawing on the board, we were busy with our in-door and on-bench games. Similarly, the same scene for physics and chemistry classes. Ample time used to go waste in the drawing.
Tumblr media
Visual Learning’s Challenges in Traditional Education
Many times, we could not visualize what the teacher explained. Sometimes it was very difficult to remember too. Somehow we passed out and if you ask me, I don’t remember anything I learnt that time as it was never registered in my brain.
But, I can tell the story of Nagarjuna’s Shiva or Chiranjeevi's Gang Leader Movie story, fully even though I saw it almost 25 years back.
So, is this because I lack interest in education? and interest in movies?
The answer is NO. Even though I had an interest in education, my brain did not register the subject. My brain registered only English or Telugu subjects as I didn’t need to visualize anything. In the case of biology, and physical science, I need a lot of visuals to register which was missing in those days.
Educational experts say that ninety per cent of the information we receive is visual, and the human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. This was not the latest statement; it was discovered 50 years ago. However, due to the non-availability of technology, our teachers used to physically draw the maps.
The Growing Role of the Latest Technology in Classrooms
Thanks to the internet and digital gadgets, our children have got the best advantage. Some years back Smart classrooms and Digital classroom was a luxury and only available in fewer schools and there may be one projector per school. Now, Smart TVs are available at 12,000 prices hence many schools are having an interactive panel or smart TV in every classroom.
Every student can see Animated Digital Content with high-end graphics, images and voice-overs so that whatever the student is seeing will be registered to the minds fully thus making it super advantageous for them.
Internet Usage in Education
A few years back internet availability was too costly affair hence only a few kids had the luxury of owning a Student Learning App.
Thanks to many internet service providers, we are getting the internet for very affordable prices.

Eligibility Criteria and Number of Attempts:
To be eligible for the IIT JEE exam, candidates must have completed their 10+2 education or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. They should have also secured at least 75% marks (65% for reserved categories) or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards. 2. Create a Study Schedule:
Develop a comprehensive study schedule that covers all the subjects and allows sufficient time for revision. Divide your time effectively, giving more emphasis to weak areas while not neglecting strong ones.

get to know me tag
I was tagged by @the-9muses, @missinglittlebritishfriend, @aleksandrachaev - thanks, loves 🥺🥺 Yours were fab!
Name/Nickname: Lily (which yes is short for something, no it's not embarrassing just very British, as Kat LOVES to mock me about)
Gender: Female
Star Sign: Virgo (and fortunately/unfortunately with all the perfectionism typical of that sign)
Height: 166cm (and nO I am not trying to convert that into feet and whatnot. Sorry, Americans, but your system makes NO SENSE. Ugh)
Time: 9:45 AM, desperately procrastinating setting into my final round of prep work for classes starting next week
Birthday: 2 September
Favorite Bands: like my wife, I'm a BIG fan of musicals, pretty much all musicals, so... Hamilton, Hadestown, Wicked, Les Mis, Moulin Rouge!, Evita, Chicago, Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, The Lion King. I'm also very into movie soundtracks, basically anything Disney or related to Lin-Manuel Miranda 😝😍
As bands go, Imagine Dragons, Florence + The Machine and ABBA are fab, too!
Favorite Solo Artists: Ed Sheeran, classical musicians do not count shut UP brain, Taylor Swift?? (hissssss @ Kat)
Song Stuck In My Head: Afterglow by Ed Sheeran
Last Movie: The Old Guard, rewatch #4. It's just SO DAMN COOL, guys
Last Show: Us (and no, not just for Iain, either, though ngl he's a big benefit. It's a great show, though, I'm loving it so far!)
When Did I Create This Blog: the 5th of May 2020, apparently! Feels like a lot longer to me, lol, but, yup, I'm a lockdown baby! 😝
What I Post: Fics, reblogs of other people's amazing creations, and occasionally random nonsense
Last Thing I Googled: "Lockdown UK live updates" - because, yes, that's what my TV show binging and spectacular denial levels lately have allll been caused by :/
Other blogs: Yes! I created and am an admin of agentsofchallenges, the Challenges of SHIELD blog we part-run from our fandom friends Discord. I'm also an admin for aos-angst-war, the blog we made for, surprisingly, the AoS Angst War (before we were smart enough to come up with agentsofchallenges, lmao)
Following: 387, apparently - w h o a, how'd that happen?? Too many amazing people out there, that's all I'm saying.
Followers: 237, which makes me think of three things immediately: one, there seems to be a sevens theme going on with "follow-" words today. Cool beans! Two, OH MY GOSH PAST TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY FOLLOWERS Already??? Every time I look at this statistic, it's more, and my eyes want to pop out of my head. I mean, I'm SO flattered, guys, but also w t f!!! Ahhhhhhhh, it's more than a little unbelievable. (!!!) Anyway, and, three, hnsjdskhsghsjhd, I'm an awful person, I haven't even completed my Hundred Followers Celebration yet!! Better get right on that 😬🤦‍♀️🥰
Average hours of sleep: 6/7 in work-time, because teaching is a full-time job and I need to be 100% functional. In the holidays, though... yeek. Anybody's guess!! I often go to sleep in the very wee hours of the night (2, 3am) but then I'm also a lazy ass and only get up at 10, so... About the same, actually!!
Lucky number: ehhh, I don't really have one, I'm not superstitious like that, really - EXCEPT, WAIT, NO, I TOTALLY DO. Of course I do!! 42. The answer to life, the universe, and everything, my friends :D
Instruments: I play piano and violin professionally, and a little bit of cello, badly 🤣
What I Am Wearing: an old grey-green pair of drawstring sweatpants, and an oversized white sweatshirt. My isolation suit, guys!
Dream Job: ohhh, gosh, well. I've always had a passion for both music and teaching, and I've known this is what I want to do for years, so I'm kinda... in it?? Lucky me, I know, lol 🤣😍 If I could have anything, though, I'd probably want to be an actress, or a singer-songwriter. Or both!! Or, I know, a Marvel screenplay writer for the Quake/Secret Warriors alternate universe spinoff 🤣😝
Dream Trip: ohhhh, MAN, well - I'm an incurable romantic at heart, so, the Seychelles with my boyfriend? Or maybe, to be a fangirl and a romantic (which is just goals, honestly) Tahiti!! Yup, yup, that's my final answer. I want an all-expenses-paid, full-luxury trip to Tahiti - I hear it's a magical place 😝😍🏖️
Favorite Food: I've recently been visiting my family in Ireland (before lockdown screwed everything over for me UGH) so, my nan's chocolate shortbread!! The actual BEST biscuits you'll ever taste 😍😍😍
Nationality: British-Irish (yes, I have a dual citizenship, which I think is pretty wicked)
Favorite Song: Impossible. Question. And one you'll get a different answer to every time you ask it!! Currently, though, I'm going to have to say Nancy Mulligan, for all the family nostalgia and happy memories it brings up for me 💜
Last Book I Read: Ugh, this is probably the LEAST exciting answer you could even dream of, but... A2 GCSE Music Syllabus and Teacher's Guide - 2021 Revised Edition. Yeah, prepping for work SUCKS.
Top 3 Fictional Universes I’d Like To Live In: The MCU, but very specifically season 3A of Agents of SHIELD, so I could meet all my babies when they were happy(ish) and tell them how much I adore them 🥺🥺💜 Also, the Wizarding World post-the Second Wizarding War (because if I'm living in the world I'm not affected by JKR's crap). And for number three, OOH!! Storybrooke post-season 6 (and happily pretending season 7 never happens.) Yes please!!
Oooh, gosh, well, this was loads of fun, and a great distraction from work... though, in all seriousness, I should probably get to that now. Before I go, though, I'm going to tag @eowima, @que-mint-tea, @justanalto, @apathbacktoyou, @springmagpies, @maybebrilliant, @loved-the-stars-too-fondly, @nazezdha321, @besidemethewholedamntime and @fitzsimmonkeys, if any of you guys want to do this! 🥰💜

Do I count as vetblr if I’m only in first year undergrad
(Also if you have any college tips that’d help me out so fucking much)
If you are interested in veterinary medicine, it makes you part of the vetblr community. Simple as that :)
Some college tips:
1. Try to be well rounded. While yes we are in college to learn, it's not just academic. It's about being human. Try (legal) things you've never done before. If you have an interest outside your major, take a class on it. See a sport you'd like to try? I'm sure there is a group or club somewhere that would let you/teach you how to play.
2. Sleep: I'm kinda hypocritical on this one, but sleep is so important. College can be exhausting at times. And I'm not just talking academically. The social part can be just as stressful. But sleep? Sleep is an important part of keeping that hard earned knowledge in your head.
3. Scholarships: Most majors will have a scholarship list somewhere. Like a big old list of people who have money, that want to be charitable to the broke college student. Apply. For my major they had a single form you filled out for like 10-15 scholarships. I got $1000 for filling out a form one day on a whim.
4. The syllabus: Even if you don't read it cover to cover (which I do recommend), take any dates (exams, assignments, etc) and put them in a calandar or planner. Time works differently in college.
5. Roommates: Being easy going and willing to pull your weight is a huge plus as roommate. We all grew up with different experiences and none of us want to be our roommate's parent. Keep your space tidy, have a meal together, team clean your shared space.
6. In the case of 2020: A subset of info
-Have a set time to wake up each day. It's really easy right now to not do things because you don't have to go anywhere.
-Have a set work space. Keep your bed as your friend and not your classroom if possible.
-A good set of headphones/earbuds with a mic. Please, please, please wear them during calls where you need to speak. It cuts down on background noise and interference.
-I know I said part of college is the social aspect but be smart about it. Think before you go. Your or someone you care about's life could depend on it.
Anon, I hope this helps and I wish you luck in your first year!

For Reylo Week 2020
Day 1: Favorite Song Lyric or Quote
Fanfic inspired by Quote:
"Lovers don't finally meet somewhere. They're in each other all along.”
– Rumi
https://archiveofourown.org/works/23871826/chapters/57382366
Title: Together Always
Summary: In a new world and new life, Rey and Ben Solo, attend the same University and same class. They are drawn towards one another for reasons unknown... Until they happen to touch, revealing a part of themselves, from another life, another galaxy...
Part I
Ben Solo couldn’t explain it, but there was something about her that was familiar. He observed her unique triple bun hairstyle that made him happy for a reason he didn't know.
The syllabus had just been thoroughly discussed and everyone was separated into small critique groups for their creative writing course at Coruscant University, in the heart of New Republic City. After a minute of awkward stares, making sure their desks were in a small circle, and wondering who should start first, she spoke.
"My name is Rey," she began. She went into a rhythm of tapping her fingers on her binder and making a fist as she spoke. She was nervous, Ben could tell. "I'm a first-year, major undecided, and—" She briefly looked at Ben and gave him a curious look before she looked away. "—I look forward to working with all of you this semester." She finished with a small grin and looked down at her clasped hands.
Rey heard her fellow students, Rose and Jacen, give their introductions, and for some reason, her chest quickened when she finally heard his voice. "I'm Ben—Political Science Major. This is my final year and I always wanted to take a writing course...So here I am," he finished with a shrug. Rey saw he made a fist like her and knew he must have been nervous as well. She stared at his almost shoulder-length dark wavy hair; she wanted to run her hands through it. Her daze was interrupted when Ben stared back at her, his look in curiosity as if he was trying to place her. The thing was, Rey was puzzled as she felt she saw this man before...Maybe in a dream? She shook looked away.
"Well, I suggest we get each other's email addresses so we can send each other our first short stories," Rose said, pulling a piece of paper and handing it to Jacen first.
As Jacen wrote, he mentioned, "I could send my story first. I've been wanting to get some feedback." He handed the paper to Rey.
"I'll go after you!" Rose exclaimed. She gave everybody a warm smile, making everybody in their group feel at ease.
Rey slid the paper across from her, towards Ben. They stared at one another until he looked away, taking the paper and writing his e-mail address. She looked around at her classmates and said, "I'll go after you, Rose."
"Awesome!" Rose said enthusiastically. She pointed at Ben. "That makes you..."
"Last--yup, I'm good." Ben nodded, looking at Rey and found she was staring at him, again. This time they smiled at each other before looking away.
Rose, seeing their exchange smiled as she said, "Also, I must say Rey, I love your hairstyle. It's so cute!"
"Oh," Rey touched her buns and gave a small shrug. "Thank you. It's something I've always done since I can remember."
"That's sweet," Rose said, nodding. "My sister Paige and I have these matching medallions from our hometown, Hays Minor. We've had them ever since we can remember too." Rose and Rey smiled at each other, in understanding. Rose nodded as Rey gently touched the medallion.
"It's beautiful." She took her hand away and saw both Jacen and Ben were staring at them. "Sorry, guess we got carried away there," Rey said.
Jacen shook his head. "No, it's cool." He gave them both a grin. "I also have a necklace from my hometown of Lothal, a town not far from here."
"I know that area...My father and I would go camping in the mountains; it's a beautiful area," Ben said as he ran his fingers through his hair. He moved his mouth back and forth.
Jacen nodded knowingly. "Right, every summer my parents and I go camping and explore. There's always a new area to discover."
Rey loved that the group was getting along. She had a good feeling about this.
Later, after a quick-write assignment, their professor dismissed them early, reminding them to upload their critiques of the first story online before attending class next week.
Rey put her desk back in line, behind another desk. She heard the room become louder with chatter as everybody was moving their desks back in place and leaving. She picked up her binder, accidentally knocking her pen to the ground. "Shoot," she whispered, as she quickly put her binder in her backpack.
"Here," Ben whispered as he waited for Rey to acknowledge him.
Her head immediately went up hearing his voice. "Thanks, Ben!" She smiled as she retrieved it. Their fingers barely touched as in one flash of a second she saw something like a vision or a memory of Ben smiling at her, his eyes closed. She looked at him quizzically then shook her head as she smiled at him again before turning away from him and walking towards the door. What was that she wondered.
Ben looked at Rey as she left the room. He looked down at his fingertips. He wondered if she saw what he saw, a glance of Rey smiling at him, but she looked tired and she had blood on the right side of her forehead. He didn't know what to make of it as he packed his things and left the classroom.
He walked outside the building and smelled Night-blooming jasmine. He closed his eyes, taking in the fragrance, reminding him of home. A subtle wind moved his hair as he opened his eyes and continued to walk.
He walked a block away from the University toward his favorite 24 Hour Coffee House, Green Milk. He opened the door and welcomed the dim lighting from Christmas lights displayed all around the walls, creating a comfy ambiance. The smell of coffee, tea, baked goods, and sandwiches made him sigh in relief as he waited in line to order. He looked around, trying to spot a free table until his eyes landed on Rey sitting at a small table reading a book.
Rey's shift at Green Milk started at 9:45. She was grateful that her last class of the week ended an hour early as she got started on her history reading. A few minutes into her reading she heard faint footsteps and then the voice that made her feel butterflies in her stomach. "Hi again, Rey," Ben said. He moved his mouth back and forth. "I was wondering if I could sit here? Other tables have been taken."
Rey looked around and saw the coffee house was indeed crowded. She looked back at Ben and said, "Of course." She moved her backpack from the chair and put it near her feet. She saw him remove his jacket, revealing the same black sweater he wore in class, fitting him quite nicely she thought. She moved her cup filled with tea near her as he sat across from her. Without him noticing, she looked as he took out his laptop from his sleek messenger bag. It was less than an hour and she still wondered what that image of Ben meant.
Ben noticed Rey stare past his shoulder with a determined look. "You okay there?"
Rey shook her head, freeing herself from that image. "Yes, just a long day. I don't know if this was smart of me, but I arranged it so that I have all my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays." She shrugged.
"Well, I did the same thing."
"Really?" Rey raised a brow.
Ben nodded and took a bite of his blueberry muffin. "I have two early classes back to back then two evening courses, one on Tuesday and ours." He took a sip from his hot cocoa.
Rey sighed. "Good, then I must be on the right track."
"How has your first week been?"
Rey shrugged, opening her mouth then closing it, making Ben chuckle.
"That bad?" He asked.
"It's just overwhelming," she sighed.
Ben ran his fingers through his hair. "That's how I felt and as the semesters passed, I just fell into a rhythm. You'll find your rhythm soon enough."
"I hope so."
They both smiled at each other then looked down at their reading materials. Ben took another sip of his drink before asking, "Are you from the city?"
Rey shook her head. "Jakku."
Ben's brows furrowed. "That's in the middle of—"
"Nowhere," she finished. She rolled her eyes. "I know."
"I can understand why you wanted to attend University in the city now."
"I love it here. There's much to do and it's so lively." She closed her history book and put her shoulders on the table leaning towards Ben. "I never want to leave."
Ben nodded. "I'm sure your family misses you."
"They won't," she said with ease.
Ben furrowed his brows again and regretted his words. "Sorry, I didn't mean to—"
"I never knew my parents." Rey looked down at her tea before looking up and staring into Ben's eyes. She felt she could trust him with this part of herself that she usually never revealed to anyone. "I remember being in an orphanage until I was about six." She smiled fondly at the small floral bouquet in the middle of the table. "An older man named Ben Kenobi adopted me. He had a wife and child once but lost them the same night when their child was born. Years later, he moved to Jakku from another isolated town to become the town's Reverend." She smiled and fidgeted with her hands, not staring at Ben but wondered how he was looking at her. She looked up and saw a genuine look of compassion and she was touched by it.
"What happened to him?" He asked in a soft tone.
"He passed away a year ago, yesterday," she revealed with a somber look. "He was the only parent I needed and I'm grateful we were a family." Rey smiled and felt a single teardrop on her left cheek. She wiped at it with a hand. "Didn't mean to get so emotional there."
Ben had his chin on top of his clasped hands. "It's okay, you're not alone in feeling those emotions."
Rey sniffled and drank more tea before she responded with a single word, "Good."
Ben was moved by her story. He took another drink from his cup when he heard her question. "Are you from here or...?"
Ben half-smiled before he responded. "I'm from Chandrila."
Rey's mouth formed an O. "Oh, I want to visit one day. It looks like a lovely area."
Bon nodded. "It is," he confirmed. "There are stunning beaches and the water is always calm; there are beautiful views of the hills."
Rey sighed as she drank more tea. "Sounds breathtaking."
"I also lived in Naboo, where my grandparents are."
Rey's eyes enlarged. "Another lovely area, wow, you're so lucky."
Ben half-smiled again. "I think my grandmother and mother love peaceful areas. They both were surprised that I wanted to study in the city rather at one of the Universities over there."
"They're very expensive."
"Yeah, but my grandfather lived in this city and my father too, for a time, and I just I don't know, wanted to start my adulthood here as well."
"I understand," Rey said. She crinkled her nose. "Chandrila and Naboo..."
"I hope you visit both one day." He stared at her in interest.
"Me too," she met his stare, wanting to talk more—She looked at her phone and saw it was almost time to get ready for her shift. "Well, it's time for me to get ready for work."
Ben gave her a quizzical look. "At this time?"
Rey laughed. "Don't worry. I work here."
"Oh," He gave a dry chuckle. "Do you usually work this late?"
"Just Thursday nights. I work normal hours tomorrow, Saturdays and Sundays."
"I see," Ben said as he saw Rey packing her things in her backpack.
She zipped it up and threw her backpack over one shoulder. She had her cup of tea in one hand and raised her other hand towards Ben. "I'm glad to know you better, Ben."
"Same here, Rey." He gave her a full smile as he reached to touch her hand with his. When they touched something electric passed through both of them, they both felt it as they saw different images, again.
Rey saw a snow-filled forest and Ben was staring at her in shock and awe, his hair disheveled. He was wearing a long black costume, covering his neck.
Ben saw a wintry forest, with snow falling, and Rey staring at him with confusion but also determination, wearing a sand-colored costume and arm wraps. In her hands was something he couldn't decipher until a blue hue appeared like a laser sword.
They released each other's hands at the same time and looked at each other in surprise and confusion. They both didn't know how to bring up what they saw and the momentary silence ended once Rey said, "Well, good night, Ben. See you next week." She smiled quickly before leaving and hearing his response.
"Night," Ben whispered staring where Rey was just seconds ago. He looked back and saw her going to the back of the coffee house. He turned back, feeling himself breath faster as he muttered, "What the fuck was that?"

Schooling Then & Now...
During the closure of schools due to pandemic from March 2020 till date (End Oct 2020), I have heard how classes are being held and attended from home at least in Metros. I am reminded of my school days during1954-66 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
My first school was a family run primary school in the residential complex that we lived. I studied there as it was convenient to attend and my elder sister also went to the same school. It was housed in a bungalow with four to five rooms, each housing one standard. It was from 11 am to 5 pm. It was a traditional school with standard syllabus. The school was co-ed and we sat on floor. Our school bag had a book or two and a slate (black stone) and white chalk. We walked to the school. The medium of instruction was Gujarati
Then I went to a special primary school run by Sarabhais (Vikram Sarabhai’s family). The school had four classes, one each for one standard. Each class had 10-12 students only. The school started at 8.30 am and till 4 pm. On arrival all children would be given a glass of milk and then academic lessons would start till lunch at 12 noon. The children brought roti/chapati from home but all else was served by the school-Dal, Rice, Vegetables, Papad, pickles etc. Children from class 4 normally managed the lunch service, though food was cooked by others. School was co-ed and we hardly carried any books or other items in the school bag except a box of roti/chapati. I travelled by the city bus to commute to school. The medium of instruction was Gujarati.
After lunch, the non-academic activities were the main focus. These included music (mainly folk), folk dance (garba/dandiya), painting, carpentry, stitching/tailoring etc. the teachers of high caliber came to teach these special skills or hobby. Our music teacher was an AIR (All India Radio) artiste. We also undertook projects of a long duration. For example, in carpentry class we built Sam’s Cabin on the treetop (the school had a large area). We also staged plays in open air once a year. Each and every student must participate in the play and hence they were selected accordingly. One was “Alibaba and Forty Thieves”, and another was “Gulliver’s travel to pigmy land” (a shadow play).
The school also imparted general knowledge in the most effective way. We once slept in the school so that we could be taken to an observatory at 3 am to see the sky and the stars. We were once taken to the Municipal office to see the model of Nehru Bridge under construction (before1960) followed by a visit to the riverbed to see the construction. Children were encouraged to explore and most of us would sit on the wall (on the riven bank) just watch the Sabarmati river in flood. We were allowed to climb trees and play with our teachers. I found it to be a good place for an all around development.
Then I was admitted to a popular Gujarati medium school which boasted of the large area (I think 300 acres or more) and it followed Gandhian philosophy. Our uniform was from Khadi. The trust was Jain. The school was co-ed and I commuted by city bus or walked the 3 km short route on some days with other students and a teacher. Theschool was from 10.40 am to 5.10 pm with two short breaks. Saturday was half day- 7.30 am to 11 am.
The middle school (std 5 to 7) was in a separate building about 500 meters from either entry. We sat on floor with a wooden stool in front. The school bag had textbooks, notebooks and a pencil box along with a snacks box. In addition to academic classes we had optional selected non-academic courses. Music was compulsory and my weakest subject. One could choose from music, painting, stitching/tailoring or agriculture. I opted for agriculture. I was given a piece of land (5 x 10 ft) and allowed to grow vegetables etc. The vegetables were available for sale and I used to take some home.
The high school (std 8 to 11) was in a larger building near the main gate. The compass box was added to books and notebooks. We used to write with an ink pen.The classes had a bench. Between these buildings was a huge playground for volleyball, kho-kho and kabaddi etc.We had a prayer hall covered but open from sides where all students would gather first thingin the morning and pray. At this gathering, we were also able to enjoy cultural programs based on the festivals and some speeches by leading persons- politicians, writers, thinkers, and ex-students.
During the entire school years, I attended classes regularly and was not permitted to attend any private tuition, In any case private tuition was not so popular then, My father insisted that I asked all my doubts to the teachers in the class or after class in the teachers (staff) room. I hardly recall any parents’ teacher meeting. Strangely I had not spoken to any girl student at my school or class throughout the eleven years, though it was co-ed. I loved outdoor games and in the eight standard I joined a hockey coaching center (outside) run by an ex-India player. This led me to go for state school level hockey tournament and participated in all India school meet in Shillong in Feb,1966.
My daughter went to an international school in Japan and her experience was different than schooling in India. She walked to school everyday for 20 minutes and carried only an umbrella and lunch on some days. She played basketball, hockey, and volleyball. She would go ice skating or on over night trips to gain knowledge not just from textbooks but from experiences. When she came back to study in India, she found the education system hard and competitive and teachers had minimal interest in teaching except for scoring high marks.
I now will attempt to compare the above school life with present day school life in metros before COVID-19 (March 2020). Though I have no first-hand experience of it, I have gathered it from parents of school going kids. Most of these go to a private school and not municipal or govt school in various parts of the globe.
Before COVID-19 struck, the school time was 8 am to 2 pm and probably five days a week. Kids must carry a huge/heavy school bag containing water bottle, books, notebooks, compass box, lunch box (for two breaks). Kids do use ball point pen or gel pen. The school bag weighs a lot and there are complaints of kids, but no solution seems to be in sight. Most kids go to school by school bus or auto-rickshaw or dropped by parents. Hardly anybody walks to school. A lot of focus is on academic work and homework. Most schools lack a playground. Some schools do encourage extra-curricular activities, but most kids take up extra-curricular activities because of the parents or peer pressure. Some govt or municipal schools run two shifts to make maximum use of the infrastructure- school building. Most classes have 50 children in each room.
Many of the schools have annual day and they are a huge burden on parents both in terms of time and expenses. Most items on annual day celebrations lack heritage or folk influence on dance or music or singing.  Most kids (also their teachers) do watch tv and are influenced by its content. Many kids have the luxury of travel domestically or internationally with their parents on holidays. I do not see many activities among school going kids in residential complexes. Rural schools might still be following the historical timing (11 am to 5 pm) and the syllabus with almost poor teachers.
After March 22, 2020 the schools were closed, and students and teachers were encouraged to attend online classes. In last six months (till Oct end) the schools are closed and online classes have become the routine.
In metros, many private schools are actively following the online class concept. I understand the online class can be attended provided one has a laptop or a tablet or a smart mobile with adequate data and speed for Wi-Fi connection. The classes are for four hours a day. The homework is also given online and submitted online. In most cases projects given seem to be done by parents and not children which is not the best way to learn. While writing exams adults at home keep prompting the child to ensure high score /marks are achieved. Teaching a child short cuts or to cheat is not beneficial in the long run. Parents forget that getting marks above 90% should not be the only aim for the child.
Many families are facing the shortage of hardware as the parent or parents attend office from home (WFH) and they need the same hardware- laptop or tablet and a strong WiFi connection. If there is more than one child attending class/school from home the shortage of hardware and infrastructure is felt more and is also a financial burden too.
Poor people are finding it hard to attend classes online. My domestic help has three children going to school and that is either municipal or govt school. They also hold classes online. But the poor family has only two mobiles and only one is smart. Her husband is a driver but has lost his job.
I dare not imagine what is happening at rural schools and their classes with no infrastructure like WiFi connectivity or smart mobile at home. Some may not have even electricity at home. I hope that large IT firms instead of running schools in rural India under the name of NGO’s should have ensured a good e-learning system but that seems like a dream. This would have been helpful during these times and need not depend on poor quality teachers.
In all the above activities the major problem is that children have lost physical touch with school, class, and teacher. They surely miss outdoor activities (sports etc.) with their classmates. They also must be missing the cultural activities on the festivals.
The mental stress of being confined to a residence for so long must be very real and parents must be finding it difficult to attend to it among their children and themselves.
Conclusion…….
I do believe that old time classes at school and freedom to mingle/play with classmates and children from neighborhood were great contributors to develop a child’s all faculties. The emphasis was outdoor activities and non-academic interests to be followed. The child was not stressed with pressures from parents, siblings, or peer day in and out.
Prior to lockdown due to pandemic, the metro school going kid was stressed with many issues- get up early, catch the bus or transport or do homework or dress properly with or without makeup for girls, etc. Parents were also stressed to see that their child is not lagging only in academic pursuit but also otherwise.
After lock down the situation has worsened for the child. The child is confined to the four walls of the residence with same family members and has no chance to go outdoors. (recent relaxation may permit going out but many parents do not want to take the risk). Outdoor activities are almost none and 24x7 the child is using handheld devices –Laptop, tablet, or smart phone to do schoolwork and to play games, also to see cartoons or other entertaining content on TV.
I pray for early release of restrictions due to COVID-19 and restoration of schools to normal working in general and in rural areas in particular.
