#inspired by my mom mentioning that a book was published in 1977 and then looking like me like i was an insane person when i was like#''thats the year smallpox was eradicated!''#which i only remembered because it happens to also be the year gerard way was born. the two events are inextricably linked in my mind#everyone is familiar with the date of the last naturally occurring case of smallpox‚ right?#mcr#a.txt#100+#500

Happy Smallpox Eradication Day! I made this little dinner in celebration.
Before modern medicine, red was held to be a colour for warding off smallpox in multiple cultures, so I thought a meal with some red focus would be appropriate.

as a Millennial, I have a lot of anxieties.
what will the world be like in the future?
will I ever be able to afford a house and children, since I want those?
what if I get spontaneously sent back in time to an era that had smallpox, but after the invention of the inoculation, and have a greater smallpox risk than the people in that era because I was born after smallpox was eradicated and have never had said inoculation? wouldn't it be poetic tragedy if, coming from a time with medical knowledge these people could never even dream of, I died from a disease many of them were immune to because my era was innocent of its ravages?
you know, normal stuff
#millennial#history#medical history#I actually do think about that sometimes#the eradication of smallpox has ironically produced generations MORE vulnerable to it than their great-grandparents#which is a good thing because of the reason!#it's just. there's something Ponderous about that IMO

There are a lot of reasons i feel intense resentment (at the very least) towards anti vaxers and anti maskers. There are a lot of things that I quite possibly never do the same way again. Every time I go out or think about going out I’m reminded of this. Every time I go online and see one of those assholes I’m reminded of it. Every time I see some of my own relatives I’m reminded of it. I hate it so much. But there is something different about the feelings I get when I’m reminded of something small I can’t do. I don’t know what it is but it’s almost more sadness than anger, and when my ears hurt because I’ve been wearing a mask all day as I buy groceries and go to appointments, that enrages me. When I’m told I’m being brainwashed or paranoid because I can’t stand the thought of long covid and the fact that I could get even more health problems because those fuckers joined some cult mindset I’m enraged. When I open up the cabinet behind my bathroom mirror and see my black lipstick it’s more sad. I miss the theatrics of wearing dramatic colorful makeup. I miss the drama of having black lipstick and Wes all black. Sure, I can still wear all black (and most often do) and wear dramatic eye makeup, but my favorite thing, the lipstick, isn’t an option anymore. Only some gatherings of people or something where I need to take off my mask would show it, and getting lipstick all over the inside of a mask isn’t very fun tbh. I was never super into makeup and I have never worn it even close to everyday, but I miss when I did.
#emma posts#this post is about my personal experience. its not about how much I care about other people getting stuck in the crossfire#there are plenty of posts about that and i don’t think I have much to say that hasn’t been said before#I’ve seen people get long covid and i don’t want it#I wish they didn’t have it either#if this breaks containment and someone is like ‘covid isn’t all about you’ I’m going to stab something#yeah. no shit it’s not. but I’m making a post about my own experience with this#i hate my country#kinda love my state. but hat my country#the fact that actual government officials spread even more misinformation and encouraged people to follow it is so fucked#antivaxers were seen as crazy a decade ago. now they’re all over the place#I mean. they are crazy. that hasn’t changed#we eliminated smallpox. we had a chance to eradicate a new terrible disease before it became endemic and you fucking stopped it#I knew about pandemics as a highschooler. how are you all so fucking stupid#and don’t say that they are all uneducated. my brother and my aunt have perfectly good educations#and you know the fucking tv people have them too#and don’t turn this into an ‘oh the makeup industry’ post#i have self image issues yes. but I go outside with my face naked all the time. I just like being fun sometimes#you seen a drag queen? I wouldn’t go that hard at it but they fucking get it#it’s why I dye my hair too. when I look in the mirror and see my favorite colors it makes me smile#my body is a canvas#and I decide what goes into this gallery#so more than one canvas? but i only have one body. this analogy doesn’t work but you get it I hope

WHA33.3 Declaration of global eradication of smallpox
The Thirty-Third World Health Assembly, on this the eighth day of May 1980;
Having considered the development and results of the global programme on smallpox eradication initiated by WHO in 1958 and intensified since 1967;
Declares most solemnly that the world and all its peoples have won freedom from smallpox, which was a most devastating disease sweeping in epidemic form through many countries since earliest times, leaving death, blindness and disfigurement in its wake, and which only a decade ago was rampant in Africa, Asia and South America;
Expresses its deep gratitude to all nations and individuals who contributed to the success of this noble and historic endeavour;
Calls this unprecedented achievement in the history of public health to the attention of all nations, which by their collective action have freed mankind of this ancient scourge and, in so doing, have demonstrated how nations working together in a common cause may further human progress.
(Source: https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/154893/WHA33_1980-REC-1_eng.pdf, the record of proceedings of the 1980 World Health Assembly.)
(We celebrate in December because the Global Commission for the Certification of Smallpox Eradication published their report on December 9th 1979.)
today is a holy day. today is Smallpox Eradication Day.
we still may die of other things, but we will not die of this.

ive been saying this for Literally Years Now but the most direct medical comparison to covid probably is never going to be HIV on any metric, overall it's probably the SARS outbreak of the early aughts (related viruses, similar transmission, what appear thus far to be similar rates/experiences of post-viral conditions and disability) and politically i do understand why people reach for HIV but like you really need to understand that our current situation is similar to how EVERY SINGLE pandemic / epidemic / outbreak has 'ended' in recent / capitalist history. these are political designations, that tend to get made once the ruling class considers itself safe, and it is typical that workers, global southerners, racialised people, &c continue to bear the brunt of diseases that would be treatable or preventable, were imperial countries and their ruling classes to care. we should be furious every time this happens and in every case where it is still happening: flu, TB, malaria, ebola, zika, plague, on and on, even the smallpox eradication campaign championed as a definitive triumph for public health occurred unevenly and the US and europe allowed the disease to continue to exact its most brutal toll on people in the Horn of Africa and southeast Asia until it was finally eradicated. covid is not unique in its medical OR political properties or ramifications, if you think it is you sorely need to do some more reading and this is why it is both unhelpful and yes, often homophobic to see how often 'covid communicators' jump straight to making alarmist and poorly contextualised comparisons to HIV, Specifically.

Had a fucked up dream about rabies spreading like covid, after a smallpox-like eradication, because some anti-vaxxer's kid got bit by a rare surviving sample of it, because that shit can survive for YEARS undetected and also in corpses, and then it fucking mutated into the zombie apocalypse
