love your writing. youre awesome. you don't have to but if if you could could you make yuyu hakusho characters x reader who's into cute dresses, make up, skin and haircare routines, stuffed animals collections and girly things. would they be accepting of her, find her annoying, join her or what do you think? plz
Yu Yu Hakusho ~With a very feminine reader~
Manga/anime: Yu Yu Hakusho
Warnings: nothing
(Y/N): your name
Thank you very much for the compliment! I personally didn't know which characters you meant exactly, so I created the headcanon with the main 4 and Koenma. If you also want someone else, write to me privately and I'll include them.
U. Yusuke
He thinks you're very adorable, but he'll never join you in hair and skin care
However, he really enjoys putting on your makeup, even if he often messes up your face
When you come back from the hairdresser with your hair cut or from the beautician with your nails done, he's always playing dumb that doesn't notice anything; however, after seeing you were offended, he compliments you ("I noticed it, (Y/N). You look great.")
Whenever he can, he buys you cute stuffed animals or accessories, such as necklaces and bracelets or rubber bands and hair clips
He also gives you nice clothes if he can buy them for you, and, if you wear them, he'll blush deeply and turn his head away so you can't see his huge blush
K. Kazuma
He's probably the person who accepts you the most
Are you wearing a nice outfit? "You're so cute, (Y/N)!" Have you groomed or cut your hair? "You look great, darling!" Did you wear makeup? "You're so gorgeous! You look great without makeup, but you're beautiful even like that!"
He goes to the game room a lot of times to win stuffed animals for you; when he wins nothing, he sulks all day ("Sorry, I won nothing..." "Kazuma, you don't have to give me a stuffed animal a day, don't worry!")
You two often do skin care together, but don't tell Yusuke this or he'll make fun of Kazuma for life
To give you gifts, he often asks Keiko for advice, as he considers his sister to be one of the least feminine women in existence (Shizuru always gets angry when he points this out to her)
Kurama
He finds it very cute you always get dressed up, but he often tells you you're beautiful, even without accessories or luxurious clothes
He always, always notices when you do something different to your hair, nails or face ("Have you done anything to your hair/nails/face? You're very beautiful, (Y/N).")
Probably, you two do hair care together: you're the only person wh's allowed to care for his hair
When you wear cute clothes, he blushes slightly and looks at you affectionately and meanwhile Youko stirs inside him
He sometimes lets you find cute stuffed animals or accessories on your bed, and then he pretends he didn't put them there ("That? No, I didn't give it to you.")
Hiei
He doesn't understand you: he can't understand why you care yourself so much, and he refuses to join you if you ask him this
Despite this, one day, after seeing his sister getting her hair done by Kazuma (Hiei wanted to kill him), he decided he would do the same to you: so, he combs your hair every morning
For a while, he never gave you accessories or stuffed animals, since he thought they were useless; however, everything changed when, one day, he gave you a hair clip he had found during a mission, and he saw your happiness born from that small gesture
"I found it lying around and I thought only a person like you could wear that horror."
This is what he says every time he gives you something to wear, but it's clear he does it because he loves seeing you smile and seeing you with what he steals buys
Koenma
Like Kazuma, he also compliments you when you change your appearance, changing your hairstyle or wearing different and nice clothes every time
You two do skin treatment together: he always claims your hands have the power to make his skin soft ("Only (Y/N) can touch my face! Only she has magic hands!")
He gives you everything you want: have you seen a nice hairpin? You'll find it in your room. Have you expressed your desire for a dress? It'll be yours immediately
He forces his subordinates to have their hair or make-up done whenever you want poor Jorge
When he can (once a day), he gives you a stuffed animal

Large ripples from small stones, or Why my Yusuke is different from yours - the HUGE difference that translations & cultural context make to YYH canon!
Tumblr media
I recently became aware of how much different dubs/translations of YYH changed the original Japanese dialogue/meaning when I stumbled across a great post by another fan who watched the anime in both the original Japanese dialogue and the American English dub, and that post highlighted some of the dialogue/meaning that the American English dub changed so that the characters / dialogue fit the American cultural expectations / way of speaking better, and that actually changes interpersonal dynamics between characters as well as the characters themselves, thus changing how we interpret them! I can't find that tumblr post now, so if anyone knows the tumblr post I'm referring to, please comment with the link! (It used Hiei and Kuwabara's interactions as its example).
That post lit a lightbulb in my head - because it explains just how different "canon" can be depending on which language & culture you consumed canon in, and why some headcanons / interpretations can seem quite OOC to some while appearing perfectly in-character to others! It's because we're basing our headcanons & interpretations on different canons & cultural contexts! (or we could be playing in sandboxes that are totally removed from canon, which is a perfectly legitimate way to enjoy art too!)
As an example of how different "canon" can be depending on the translation/cultural context, in this scene in Anime Episode 5 when Koenma asks what Yusuke plans to do if Keiko doesn't make it in time to resuscitate his body:
-----
The Japanese original dialogue is: "I can't make Keiko wait 50 years. If that happens, I'll give up with dignity."
(I google-translated the Japanese CC script below, if anyone reads Japanese, let me know if the Google translation is accurate!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coupled with the official Chinese Manga translations of the equivalent scene which has very similar dialogue to the Japanese CC dialogue from the anime, Yusuke is referring to how he'd give up on trying to come back to life, and just die cleanly now.
At this point in time we have to dive a little into the subtext of previous episodes in order to understand the meaning of this Japanese dialogue, because Japanese culture/verbal communication is VERY VERY SUBTLE, with A LOT of meaning left unsaid between words. Yup, Japanese verbal communication is itself very subtextual, same as YYH canon! So let's peel back the layers!
We saw in Anime Episode 1 itself how Yusuke had such a low self-esteem due to his distorted view of himself as a "good-for-nothing-fuck-up" which he internalized from the external world's treatment and view of him, that he genuinely believed his life was worthless, that he wouldn't amount to anything good even if he came back to life, and that it'd be better for everyone around him if he stayed dead! 😭
Which is why he was ready to stay dead even when Botan gave him the choice to come back to life!
At this scene in Anime Episode 5, while Yusuke is no longer as ready to give up on his own life as he was in Episode 1 (because he saw how much he meant to his mom, Kuwabara, Keiko, Takenaka, and the kid he saved during his wake), when he saw how his mom was still more preoccupied with getting drunk than care about him in this episode, and how Kuwabara wasn't receptive to kissing Yusuke*, Yusuke again felt like he doesn't mean much to the people around him, which is why Yusuke thinks if he still wants to return to life, he can only rely on Keiko to wait around another 50 years to resuscitate him, which obviously wouldn't work, thus Yusuke feels he can only give up on coming back to life and die cleanly now.
While this is indeed a very Yusuke thing to do - he doesn't do anything by halves! - this is still driven by Yusuke's emotional wound of feeling unwanted, unloved and worthless to the people he cares about! 😭 It's very true to life, because emotional wounds like Yusuke's doesn't just get resolved when you see people crying at your wake one time! Yusuke is likely thinking - they may be sad he's dead coz well he's dead, but they don't really care enough to want him to come back to life! 😭
*(I also think Yusuke saw Kuwabara screaming awake in terror after the romantic kiss that Yusuke projected into Kuwabara's dream.. The fact that Yusuke went to the arcade to tell Kuwa a second time to kiss him tells me that Yusuke saw Kuwa scream, and even before this arcade scene Yusuke already said he can't rely on Kuwa or his mom to resuscitate him so he already knew Kuwa wouldn't show based on his scream 😭😭 that must have hurt Yusuke too, because Yusuke obviously had subconscious romantic hopes with Kuwa as evident from the Freudian-slip of a romantic kiss he projected into Kuwa's mind, where Yusuke literally pictured himself as Sleeping Beauty and Kuwa as the Prince Charming who kissed him back to life! 🤣 But instead of reciprocating, Kuwa screamed in terror, denied the dream, and refused to acknowledge it even after spirit Yusuke tried to tell him a second time at the arcade 😭 This must have been romantically disappointing to say the least or felt like rejection at the worst, even if Yusuke's romantic hopes at this point in time with Kuwa were just nebulous subconscious desires! Thus this again makes Yusuke feel unwanted!)
But I digress! The point is - based on the Japanese original dialogue, we get the above interpretation of what's going on with Yusuke as a character - his emotional wound of feeling unwanted/unloved/worthless is not yet resolved, it's triggered when 2 out of the 3 people closest to him doesn't do anything to bring him back to life, and Yusuke feels that if Keiko is the only one who wants him to come back to life enough to do something about it, he's still ready to give up on his own life and just die cleanly now, rather than drag it out another 50 years.
In other words, this is not a romantic scene that confirms Yusuke's in love with Keiko, if anything it's a scene that confirms Yusuke is NOT in love with Keiko, because if she's the only one who wants him to come back to life, he would still give up on living! This scene is about who Yusuke is as a person, and what makes life worth living to him!
This scene in its original dialogue tells us VERY IMPORTANT things about Yusuke's character -- he only feels life is worth living if he has people he cares about in his life + he's loved by the people he cares about! Which is why in the episode when Keiko rushes into the house fire to save his body, he told Sayaka that it would be pointless for him to return to life if she dies, because for someone who's as made out of Love as Yusuke, there really is no point in him returning to life if it costs the life of one of the few people he cares about! I've been shouting to anyone who'd listen that Yusuke is actually entirely made out of Love, and this is more proof points of that!
Yusuke's emotional wound of feeling unwanted / unloved / worthless / and thus alone is also FUNDAMENTAL to his character arc in the rest of canon, especially during the Dark Tournament!!!! Without this scene and its meaning intact, it would totally change our interpretation of the rest of canon, especially the Dark Tournament which is ALL ABOUT Yusuke overcoming this emotional wound!!!
-----
If you watch the anime in the original Japanese audio track but with English subtitles, the dialogue and meaning becomes different in seemingly subtle but significant ways:
"I can't very well make Keiko wait 50 years. If that happens, I'll give her up like a man."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This seemingly small change makes a world of difference, because this phrasing "I'll give her up like a man" implies Yusuke is in love with Keiko, which the original Japanese dialogue doesn't!
If I were watching canon purely in this English subtitles, I would think Yusuke is revealing that he's in love with Keiko, which totally changes what this scene is about, as well as what the rest of canon means!
Based on this dialogue/meaning, I would think that Yusuke really is in love with Keiko, and my interpretation of Yusuke in the rest of canon would go from the Japanese original "Gay and in love with Kuwa, but whose found family sibling Keiko complicates matters coz she's in love with him", to this version's "Bi and falls in love with Kuwa, but was previously sorta in love with Keiko"!
When I first watched the anime in this English subtitles, I was hella confused by the rest of canon after the revival arc was done 🤣, because I was blinded by my heteronormative expectations into thinking Yusuke really is in love with Keiko, and that wasn't helped by translations like this which changed the meaning of the original scene, which made this scene incongruent / inconsistent with the rest of canon which shows us Yusuke is in love with Kuwa!
I was like "hmmm?? Why the inconsistencies between what he says and what he actually feels? Why does he seem to be crystal clear he's not in love with Keiko, but he says something else? Even though he obviously knows he's in love with Kuwa?" And thus my interpretation of this version of canon can change to "bi- or gay-struggle to accept his own sexual orientation", which is very different from the Japanese original canon where Yusuke has always been crystal clear about his romantic feelings and didn't actually have issues accepting that internally, he just wasn't sure whether it was reciprocated by Kuwa or not!!
And thus the headcanons and fanworks we create would be completely different depending on which canon we got!
Of course, Japanese canon also had to keep the dialogue ambiguous enough that heteronormative audiences can read Yusuke as in love with Keiko easily, coz canon had to hide the Kuwameshi love story under the misdirection of Keiko as the romantic love interest, which is why even the original Japanese dialogue is deliberately vague so it can play into mainstream audience's heteronormative assumptions, but still, it doesn't imply Yusuke is in love with Keiko like this "give her up like a man" phrasing does, because the scene in its original Japanese meaning is about Yusuke's emotional wound, not his romantic love interest.
This English subtitles also doesn't tell us anything about Yusuke's fundamental emotional wound, which is what's driving his character arc in the rest of canon, especially the Dark Tournament!!
Like, it took me SO LONG before I figured out what the Dark Tournament was actually about in terms of Yusuke's character arc okay! 🤣🤣 I had to re-watch the entire anime before I got it! 🤣🤣
We begin to see what a world of difference subtle changes in translations & cultural context makes! Large ripples from small stones!
-----
Now if you watch the anime in the American English dub, the dialogue/meaning becomes even more different:
"The only thing I can do. Wait around another fifty years. Then I'll go see Keiko when she's an old hag."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay first of all, I love how the American English Dub doesn't change the scene to a romantic one that implies Yusuke is in love with Keiko! I also love the way Yusuke refers to Keiko as "an old hag" 🤣🤣, which is thoroughly sibling-coded rather than romantically-coded 🤣🤣🤣. Which can explain why a lot of my fellow fans who watched canon in this dub read Keiko as Yusuke's sibling way earlier than I did! Thank goodness I eventually caught on though! Giggle!!!
While I love that the American English dub doesn't change the meaning of this scene to a romantic one, it nonetheless changes Yusuke's character in significant ways -- in this version, Yusuke doesn't have the emotional wound of feeling unwanted/unloved/worthless anymore, he's suddenly so over this fundamental emotional wound that he will hold onto his life even if he has to wait 50 years as a spirit in a pretty meaningless existence, even though it seemed to him like nobody apart from Keiko cares enough about him returning to life! 😅
And thus based on this version of canon, my read of Yusuke would again completely change from the Japanese original of "Appears confident and uncomplicated on the surface, but actually has a deep inner self that's very different from his external facade and has a tender aching heart that he hides from the world", to this version of Yusuke who seems to be "Really as uncomplicated as he appears on the surface, no hidden emotional wounds or tender achy feelings inside" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
And thus we see how the headcanons and fanworks we create would again be completely different, depending on which version of canon we're basing it on!!
Like I said, large ripples from small stones!
And while I'm more than happy if Yusuke really has overcome this fundamental emotional wound in just a few short episodes that didn't actually give him enough learning opportunities to overcome this wound, it makes this scene incongruent with the rest of canon (especially the Dark Tournament), which is ALL ABOUT Yusuke overcoming this emotional wound!!!
Having said that, perhaps the rest of the American English dub in other scenes/episodes down the line establish Yusuke's emotional wound in other ways, which would bring his character arc back in sync with what the Dark Tournament's all about!
ANYWAY, the point of this post isn't to compare "canons" to see which one is "better". The point is - we've already seen for ourselves how even "canon" itself can be totally different (or even internally inconsistent with itself) depending on which translation/cultural context we consume it in, so if you come across another fan's headcanon/interpretation which seems OOC to you, it might just be that their canon was in a different language/cultural context from yours, OR their canon contains subtext that your canon doesn't, OR they noticed subtext you didn't, OR their canon's translations contained inconsistencies, OR it might be that they're playing in a different sandbox that's quite far removed from canon itself, which is still a perfectly legitimate way to enjoy art too!
We're lucky that the YYH fandom is by and large a very nice tolerant fandom which gives people space to interpret canon however they want even if there's supposedly "no canon evidence" for it, because this is art, art is supposed to give us the space to imagine and create, it doesn't have to be so serious, and we can all play in our respective sandboxes even if it really is totally removed from canon!
So I guess what I'm saying is - if you get your kicks by basing your enjoyment on canon like I do, there're plenty of "canons" to geek out over ❤️❤️, and if you get your kicks by playing around with the characters in ways that are totally removed from canon, that's perfectly fine as well! We can all still get along, because that's what ART IS ALL ABOUT, it gives us space to enjoy it in whatever ways float our boats! :D
-----
As for why this post is tagged Kuwameshi, well that's coz I personally get my kicks from deciphering canon's subtext, and I'm so obsessive about it I'm even considering learning Japanese language so I can read/watch canon in its purest form without the risk of anything getting lost in translation🤣🤣, coz deciphering canon to me is an exciting fun adventure where I get to unearth buried treasures that have been hidden in plain sight more than 30 years ago by Togashi and Anime Studio Pierrot, and every time I discover something new I jump and scream like a mad person with SHEER UNADULTERATED EXCITEMENT AND JOY, and since the Kuwameshi Love Story is at the HEART OF EVERYTHING IN YYH, I literally cannot talk about YYH without screaming about Kuwameshi!!!
As I've mentioned before in metas / replies to comments of various fellow fans, on my first watch of the anime, I was still shipping Yusuke with Keiko coz I was blinded by heteronormative expectations (& also confused by translations which were not consistent with what canon shows), but I was SO DISSATISFIED shipping Yusuke with Keiko coz I could sense all the ways in which Yusuke is actually not romantically interested in Keiko, just that I couldn't explicitly put my finger on it at that point in time, so much so that I watched the whole anime again looking for clues and found Kuwameshi instead! GIGGLE!
I kid you not, canon's subtext is guaranteed to blow your mind, to paraphrase a Dua Lipa song ;P
Come scream about them with me on my Kuwameshi Meta series on AO3 if you wanna see what I mean!!! 🥹🥹🌈🌈🐦🐦👌👌
SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO @sadique-angel coz the buried treasure analogy is a chef's kiss analogy from you!!!! I HAVE SO MUCH FUN gushing about canon and discovering hidden treasures with you that honestly I might just tag you in all my meta about YYH in future!!!! 🤣🤣🙌🙌📸🤿🤠🤩😍

You’re so cool AND you love yuyu hakusho…do you have a favorite character/arc?
Kurama, Dark Tournament arc.
Kurama is so fucking awesome. I love his characterization as someone who would prefer to live a normal human life and make his human mom happy, so he refuses to fuck around and if you fight him RIP because he's going to kill you as quickly and efficiently as possible. That's groundbreaking for a shonen series where every other protagonist is defined by a love of battle as an activity. Kurama is extremely good at what he does and would rather not have to get his hands dirty, but if you make him, you're going to regret it.
I think this is highlighted more in the English dub of the anime, which is one of many reasons I think it's the best version of YYH. For instance, this is how Roto's death goes in the sub, which is more accurate to the manga:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the dub, the dialogue goes:
KURAMA: I'm afraid there won't be anything left of your evil life after that. ROTO: I'm just a low-class! I don't know any better! You believe in mercy, don't you? KURAMA: No.
That's way colder, and emphasizes that Kurama isn't just a typical heroic sadist, that his connection to humanity is genuine but he's willing to turn on the demon shit to protect that connection and specifically for that reason.
As for why I love the Dark Tournament arc specifically...man, all of it pops off.
You have a solid cap on Yusuke's growth from a juvenile delinquent to real Spirit Detective. Boy goes through the wringer this arc, physically and mentally, but every time he gets over one trial you can really feel how he's grown from it.
You have a ton of character development and spotlights for the other three, with all of them winning important battles and contributing to each round. My other primary shounen fandom having the entire supporting cast stuck in the Wait For Goku grind, this was mind-blowing in comparison. This is still one of the hardest issues for any media centered around fights like this, how do you get the supporting cast in there earning their keep? The Dark Tournament does it perfectly, and it never feels like Yusuke is above them simply for being the protagonist. Like, yes, he undeniably is the strongest of them, but you really do believe there's at least a small chance Hiei really could have taken on Toguro because the gulf between them is not nearly as massive as it is between the protagonist and his friends in other shows. Even Yusuke, in the end, only just barely defeated him after being pushed to his limits.
But not just the fighters, no, you have Keiko's relationship with Yusuke simmering, you have Koenma displaying real character for the first time as he worries about the stakes and just what Sayako could be up to, even Kuwabara's sister for some reason has a half-romance with the main villain and it's somehow compelling?
And oh my God, the villains! The fighters on every team is delightful, all of them fill their precise roles perfectly and do an amazing job being both memorable and serving a function in the story, especially in prodding the heroes further along their character arcs. Team Toguro is especially great as the climax, a full team of all bangers. Elder Toguro is a fucking freak. Bui is a little flat, but does well as a giant beat-stick to go down to Hiei and prove that he's the second strongest of the heroes in an absolutely amazing fight that takes everything out of him. And oh my fucking God, Karasu. Obviously as a Kurama fan I'm all fucking over that fight. Sayako serves as the perfect antagonist behind the scenes, smug and casual, with a hint of authenticity to his weird aura that makes you want to have drinks with him even as he describes he took to enjoying cruelty for it's own sake out of boredom with his perfect life.
But Younger Toguro takes the cake. So few shounen villains are as complex or interesting while still being so intimidating and monstrous. His relationship with Genkai is something else. His final scene with her is heartbreaking.
GENKAI: Don't ever feel regret for the things between us. TOGURO: No, Genkai. But it would have been a beautiful life.
In comparison, the earlier arcs lack all that bang, and while the following arcs match more in scale, I have a lot more issues with them. Here's some of what I wrote about Chapter Black when I was rewatching the series last, which I do every year or two:
Like, the majority of Chapter Black makes no fucking sense because you can tell how hard it’s trying to be JoJo (which is obviously something I’ve only come to understand in retrospect) with Territories, but like, the mind-reader has zero powers beyond mind-reading! The fact that he can read minds and aspires to be a dirty boxer should mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to Yusuke, who punches hard enough to throw people through solid rock and create craters, and fast enough that he can’t be tracked by human eyes. JoJo works because it’s characters are normal humans with highly specific superpowers that have to work within the confines of only having those superpowers. You can’t just move DBZ-tier characters into that sort of context fighting enemies who are specifically noted as being completely normal humans outside of their specialized abilities.
Another thing I’ll criticize Chapter Black for along with it’s weird inconsistency with power levels is that it doesn’t really make any sense to suddenly make a big deal about how it would be so terrible if Yusuke killed a human who was currently trying to like, murder an entire hospital full of people who could only be saved by his dying. It’s a cop out that Yusuke stops his heart only for Genkai to start it again being all like “you don’t need to have murder on your conscious” but also a completely unnecessary cop out because they’ve been merc'ing demons left and right all show up to this point, who by now everyone should be well aware are thinking living sentient beings who often even look identical to humans. It’s also a strange inconsistency to show up here of all arcs considering the whole point of it is that humans and demons are equally bad and good, but all the way to the very end you have Yusuke suddenly fighting to not kill Sensui for no other discernable reason than his humanity.
Aside from poor Gourmet, the other psychics in Chapter Black, even the attempted mass murderer Doctor, get cozy endings where they learn to let go of their maladaptive hatred of other humans, except for Sniper whose last word is that he’s going to hunt a group of animal abusers for sport with the narrator noting he disappeared after high school. There’s something kinna hilarious about that. Everyone else chills out per the overarching message of the arc but it’s fine and cool for Sniper to be Japanese Punisher, I guess. Which I’m not criticizing in and of itself, more power to him, but it’s INCONGRUENT with the MESSAGING.
And then one of the only things I said about Three Kings was:
Absolutely the correct choice to give Koto’s reintroduction so much pizazz. The path Three Kings ultimately takes is “you liked the Dark Tournament, right? the Dark Tournament was great, we’re going to do the Dark Tournament again”, and lemme tell you Velvet Nation, I’m totally fine with that because the Dark Tournament WAS great.
But that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of things to love about those other arcs! As a Kurama fan I especially can't let it go without mention that the conflict with Gamemaster, and the way he takes his anger and sorrow out on Elder Toguro immediately after, not to mention the reveal of Elder Toguro being there in the first place, is a 10/10 no notes series of scenes. I also had this high praise for the penultimate fight in Chapter Black:
The fight against Sensui is, IIRC, the only time YYH has a “wait for Yusuke” fight and it works perfectly. Unlike in Dragon Ball Z where literally anyone else doing anything is just a complete waste of time, the supporting cast of YYH are regularly accomplishing things and winning meaningful fights the whole time, so it earns a sequence where Yusuke seems to have really died for real, even if the audience knows he’ll be back up sooner than later, and the others try to continue on without him only to get bodied even coming at the BBEG three on one. It’s also unlike DBZ in that the others fighting Sensui is a curb stomp from start to finish, instead of it being treated like something that matters only to turn out to have been pointless the whole time by the end. Even the legendary Hellzone Grenade concludes with 17 no selling it with zero problem despite the build up. The fight with Sensui is just short and sweet enough to serve as the Worf Effect but also long enough to give the secondary heroes their due in the effort their putting in to substitute for the temporarily fallen protagonist.
The Dark Tournament is just the GOAT, you know?

Not So Bad (Hiei x Apprentice Reader)
Part 1
Synopsis: The gang find a small, frazzled reader after being sent to stop a demon trafficking ring. Upon arriving to the location, they quickly realized everyone was dead, everyone except you. Reader is taken in and becomes attached to a particular demon with three eyes.
An: maybe it's because I've recently watched Nimona, but I absolutely live for the 'Scruffy Hard-ass man going soft and adopting a daughter' trope. Might explain my obsession with Dilfs 💀
*****************
When Yusuke originally took this case on for Koenma, he thought it'd be a little like when they went to rescue Yukina from Terukinae. But he was quickly proven wrong the deeper they all went into the estate.
It was supposed to be a simple mission. Stop some rich assholes from trafficking demons in order to keep the peace between Demon World and The World of the Living.
There was just so much blood.
The coppery smell was so strong even Kurama with his advanced senses couldn't pick up on anything else. And the bodies, God the bodies. It seemed like everyone they came across was horribly mutilated.
Like everybody was already dead before they got there.
Hiei used his Jagan to try to find any survivors, but even he struggled to locate any life energy.
Then they all heard a noise.
A small scuttling sound, but it was there, and as they turned a corner they saw a smaller being leaning against the wall.
Said being was caked in a crimson liquid. In their hands was a small dagger. And they looked...scared?
"What the hell happened here?" Yusuke mumbled out, catching the demon's(?) attention.
They immediately tensed up and held their weapon out in front of them.
"Did you do this?" Yusuke tried a little softer and took a step forward.
"Stay back! Just stay away from me!" They were shaking now as they jutted out the dagger a little more. Judging from the sound of their voice, they were pretty young.
A scared demon was never a good sign.
Kurama, the least intimidating looking, thought he'd have a little more success calming them down. He gestured for Yusuke to back away.
"We're not here to hurt you. We just want to know what happened here, if you'd be so willing to tell us?" His words did little to relax the frazzled demon, but at least they didn't make you any more scared.
"We shouldn't be wasting our time with this. We should just kill them since they've clearly shown themselves as a threat," Hiei commented.
Your eyes widened and the stiff pose you had became aggressive.
"Please just go away! I don't wanna hurt anyone else, so please just leave!" You were near tears by this point.
"Way to go Hiei, you made em' worse," Kuwabara grumbled.
"Giving them sympathy will make it easier for them to kill you."
Kurama blocked out their bickering in favor of taking a tentative step towards the now teary-eyed demon.
"So you did do this?"
They pointed their dagger in his direction.
"They did it first! They always-! They always-!" The demon shook their head as if trying to clear it. "They always hurt me first." Their voice lowered, along with their guard.
Kurama took another step forward.
"You were their prisoner, correct? Well, you're safe now. We came here to help by order of Spirit World. Do you know what that is?"
Another step.
The small demon nodded, weapon lowered slightly. But they didn't get aggressive as Kurama neared.
A good sign.
"We promise we won't hurt you. Don't mind what Hiei says, you were just trying to protect yourself, weren't you? It'll be okay, just let us help."
They didn't notice the plant blooming behind them, much less the sleep toxin it produced. But what they did notice was their eyes getting droopy. They struggled to take in the fox demon's words, Kurama's voice lulling them to sleep.
★★★★
You awoke on a surprisingly comfortable surface. Opening your eyes, you found yourself in an unfamiliar room. The last thing you remembered was the red headed demon....
You shot up from the soft surface and scooched back until you were flush against the wall. Sure enough, there was that same demon along with the other ginger haired boy.
Were they going to kill you after all?
You stared with scared eyes at the two of them.
"Did you have a good rest?" The red haired one asked.
You looked around the small room, trying to find the other two from before. They didn't seem to be here. Your frightened eyes met the fox demon's.
You shook slightly as you spoke.
"Where am I?"
The human was the one who decided to answer your question.
"My house. You're lucky my sister doesn't mind letting you stay here for now."
You tilted your head in confusion.
"House?"
He lived here? They brought you to a home. Not a cell.
The human nodded.
"Yeah. Which reminds me, are ya hungry?"
Your guard lowered just a smidge, back moving slightly away from the wall. You were not expecting this. Shelter and food? There had to be a catch. No humans were ever this kind to you.
"Why?"
They both seemed a little caught off guard by your question.
"What do you mean 'why'? Did you think we would just leave you there or something? We're not like those other guys that locked you up, got it!"
You flinched away as the human pointed his finger out. He looked between himself and you, concern etched into his face.
"Geez, what did they do to you?"
You shook your head rapidly. You didn't want to think about that right now. You didn't want to remember everything that happened.
"Perhaps we should give them some time before we question them." Kurama could see your discomfort start to rise. It was best to let you relax and take your time adjusting. Whatever had set you off before they found you, he wanted to make sure never happened again.
Spirit World would not be so lenient if you happened to act out again.
"Now then, how about we get you fed and cleaned up, little one?"
★★★★
With a little more coaxing, you had completely lowered your guard and followed the duo deeper into the house.
True to their word, you were sat at a table with a plate of something placed in front of you. The scent coming from it was sweet and it's shape a circle.
How bizarre
You lifted one of them up to get a better sniff. You couldn't smell any poison. At least, none of which you were familiar with.
Carefully, you took a bite.
This....
This was heavenly.
The next few seconds were of you stuffing your face with the remainder of the food on your plate. It was a funny sight to see.
You ate using purely your hands, the utensils left out going untouched. You also didn't chew after your first bite. Each pancake practically being swallowed whole. They only stopped you when you went to eat the plate because 'they're both circles, so they should both taste the same.'
"Hey! You'll die if you eat that!" The human scolded. He yoinked the plate out of your hands before you could bite down.
You frowned up at him and made grabby gestures with your hands. His resolve broke almost immediately.
"Okay, okay! I'll make you some more. Don't cry."
And a part of you softened at his unintentional words.
Don't cry
They didn't want you to be upset.
Maybe they didn't want to hurt you after all.
You felt something soft being wiped across your face. Looking to your left, you saw the fox demon with a piece of white cloth.
"You're a messy one, aren't you?" There was something teasing in his tone. Despite that, his eyes showed nothing but kindness.
You let him wipe your face once more before speaking.
"Where are the other two?"
You weren't too scared of the greasy one, but the other demon.... He made you weary. He did say they should've killed you.
"Yusuke went to inform the ruler of Spirit World about what happened. And Hiei," there was a slight pause as if the fox were thinking of something.
"Hiei returned back to Demon World since he has no obligation to stay anymore."
You were back to frowning. Maybe a small part of you thought it was unfair you couldn't return home too.
"He was the one who wanted me dead." Your voice was quiet.
"Don't mind him, he's just a big jerk!" The human shouted from his place at the stove. Your mood lightened slightly.
He was just a jerk. Yeah. He wasn't evil, just mean. And if all four of them weren't like the others, then you supposed you could trust them.
At least for now.
"I remember my name from before." You mumbled.
"Do you mind telling us then? I'd be nice to have something to call you while we wait for further orders." The fox encouraged.
You decided then you liked these two. They were nice. They didn't hurt you. And now that you thought about it, your previous wounds were all healed.
"I'm Y/n."
★★★★
After a lengthy discussion with Koenma, (which was really Yusuke making the case that you were just a kid who had probably been tortured beyond belief) it was decided that you'd be under the group's care to ensure no further harm was caused.
They were to make sure you never killed another human, lest you risk the wrath of King Yamma.
You would be swapped around between the four of them to enforce this policy. And even though the threat of what you did was still very much fresh in their minds, they just couldn't believe that you'd do it again.
When Yusuke watched you, you were always laughing at his stupid jokes. Always smiling when he'd pick you up onto his shoulders to carry you wherever he went. Always embarrassed when he would brag to the moms at the park.
"My kid's better than yours. They don't bite and pick their nose." Followed by offended gasp from the mothers.
When Kurama watched you, you would tell him everything that happened that day or the day before. You'd seek him out for comfort if you had nightmares and woke up crying. You would hold his hand when something startled you.
"It's okay little one, nothing will ever harm you again."
When Kuwabara was with you, you were babied and spoiled. Always out shopping for new clothes and shoes because 'You've grown an inch since the last time. We can't have you wearing clothes that are too small for you.' Always feeding you and watching your eyes light up when he slipped you a piece of candy. You'd always let him ruffle your hair and beam when he praised you.
"Look at you! You're all skin and bones, Did Yusuke even bother to feed you!?! You're lucky you have an awesome brother like me to take care of ya!"
And Hiei...
When Hiei would watch you, he would simply observe you from the trees. He'd watch you sit in silence and pluck the grass. He'd watch you startle at any noise that was too loud. You never talked to him, never asked anything, never looked him directly in the eye.
You were always silent and scared.
"What a pathetic excuse of a demon."
The conclusion drawn by all four: you weren't a threat to anybody. You'd had a slip up, but it was out of fear rather than aggression. You were completely harmless.
★★★★
Out of the four of them, Hiei couldn't give a damn about you at all. He didn't understand the other's softness. He understood their sympathy, but not why they bothered keeping you around. The mission was over and the observation was complete.
You were weak and skiddish. Afraid of your own shadow and any new faces. Too pathetic to even be called a demon. Too frail to ever lift a weapon and strike.
You were no longer their responsibility.
Just a burden. One that he would not worry about anymore.
Or at least that was what he told himself until the responsibility was once again forced upon him.
Yusuke had a special mission for Spirit World that he just couldn't get out of.
Kurama was having family over that would surely be suspicious of the smaller being attached to his hip.
Kuwabara was being forced to attend some out of state event with his sister.
All of these events would take a week at the least, and a month at worst.
Which left Hiei....
The demon who momentarily thought to dump you off at Genkai's.
It was thanks to that damn Detective's taunt that he hadn't.
"What's wrong three-eyes? Can't look after a kid for a few days? Scared because they're stronger than you?"
And damn his pride for falling for it. But even though he was forced to care for you, he would not be forced to stay in the human world when he did it.
You would come to Demon World with him so he could fulfill his proper duties.
★★★★
He half listened to Kuwabara's rant of what you could and couldn't eat. That oaf was too attached to you.
He didn't pay any attention when Yusuke told him what would make you smile and laugh. What possible reason did he have for remembering that?
But he did listen when Kurama pulled him aside to talk before he left.
"Their safety is the first priority. Do not let anything happen to them." There was a flicker of gold in his eyes. You had too much importance in their lives.
He took off with you the day after. But not without giving a warning of 'If you're too weak to keep up, I won't come back for you.'
You nodded, but kept silent. At least he wouldn't have to worry about listening to any idiotic ramblings.
The journey to Demon World was quiet. Too quiet, with the occasional sound of your missteps behind the three eyed demon. Not a word was spoken. If he hadn't felt your presence besides him, he would have assumed you weren't there.
Good.
You wouldn't be snot nosed brat and give him trouble.
But as the two of you reached the entrance, the lingering silence was disrupted.
"I haven't been home in a long time...Do you think my friends will remember me?"
It might've been the first words you ever spoke directly to Hiei. They were soft but hopeful. And if he had been anyone else, he would've assured you. Would've let you carry on the conversation and engaged.
But he wasn't.
And truthfully, your question irked him. Didn't you know it was survival of the fittest here? And friends? Demons didn't have friends. You were a naive dope who wouldn't make it five seconds by yourself.
"They're probably all dead if they're anything like you." Weak like you.
You didn't speak anymore after that.
You looked upset, but didn't cry. You just continued to follow Hiei to Mukuro's territory.
★★★★
You'd forgotten how thick the air was here. How tense it felt with the spirit energies clashing for dominance. You wished you'd stayed behind at the strong old lady's house now. Home didn't really feel like home anymore with the amount of time you spent in the world of the living.
Not only that, but you were in a foreign place with a demon who you were also unfamiliar with.
It wasn't exactly your fault. Hiei had never really been welcoming to you. He'd never really been nice either. You figured it was best to stay out of his way and vice versa. And maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't want to kill you anymore.
Maybe he'd be a little nicer.
But it just felt like he hated you even more for sticking around.
You looked up at the makeshift building he led you in. It was huge with walls that seemed to stretch forever. It made sense, you supposed, for a former Demon King to still be so well off. And while a compound like this housed many demons, you never felt more alone with your own kind.
One familiar face that belonged to a stranger.
You didn't like it here.
But you couldn't voice that opinion. You didn't want Hiei to think any less of you than he already did. Because then, the others might start to hate you too. So you sucked it up and persevered.
You stood right next to the three eyed demon as he conversed with Mukuro. Both of them catching up on the current events surrounding the Maki Barrier, and how to decrease the amount of humans trickling in. You'd never seen him this friendly before. The scowl that you thought was permanent had practically vanished.
He really did hate you, didn't he?
"So who's this little one? A new recruit?" Mukuro lightly jested.
There was a scoff before Hiei answered.
"A nuisance that I'm unfortunately stuck with. They're of no help here, so try to ignore them."
"Don't be so crass. I'd expect you to be kinder considering you have a little sister of your own." The former ruler scolded.
You hardly registered she kneeled down in front of you until she started talking. She most likely wanted to address you eye to eye.
"What is your name, if you don't mind me asking?"
You almost answered, but you thought against it. You'd only be here for a few days. After that you were never coming back here. You'd jump into the arms of whoever was back first and let them comfort you. Be able to feel safe and content again.
"Don't feel like talking? Well that's alright. Can you fight?"
You shook your head.
"No? Then it's best you stay here for the time being while we're gone. We have important work to do and it'd be a shame to be distracted. Can you fend for yourself, or do you need a guard accompanying you?"
You raised a finger up, signaling the first option. She smiled at you before getting up. And when you looked over towards the other demon, you could see him scowling again.
"We'll be off, let's go." Mukuro ordered.
Hiei let her go for a second before addressing you.
"Stay put. I won't go looking for you if you disappear. And stay out of trouble."
You didn't understand why he had to be so mean all the time. Nevertheless, you nodded. Sitting up against the wall and watching him head off.
Now you truly were alone.
Perhaps if you had one of those rectangular human devices, you'd be able to communicate with Kurama. Ask for advice on what you should do here. Or just convince him to come get you.
Maybe you could've convinced Yusuke to take you with him. At least then you'd be laughing the whole time. You wouldn't feel as small as you did now.
You should've asked Kuwabara to stay with you. He probably would have folded immediately. But you didn't want to do that. He wanted to spend time with his own flesh and blood. Who were you to take that from him?
You shook the thoughts from your head. There was nothing you could do about it now. You'd just have to wait things out.
And wait them out you did.
For hours.
Watching the daylight slowly dwindle down.
Just how long had you been waiting?
Your eyes drifted shut.
"Hey! Hey brat! Wake up!"
They snapped open at the sound of an unfamiliar voice. You were met with the sight of a group of demons. Hostile demons. Who lifted you up by the collar of your shirt.
"You're Hiei's pet, aren't you? One of the ones who saves those filthy humans instead of feasting on them? The disgraceful bastard."
Your first instinct was to call for help. But you knew nobody would hear you here. Nobody would care. So you struggled and kicked your legs.
"Quit it! Why don't we show that traitor what happens when you go against the natural order of things?"
The other surrounding demons laughed and nodded vigorously.
★★★★
A whole day. Hiei spent the whole day out there sending humans back through the barrier. A whole day dealing with those idiots and erasing their memories.
Maybe he should have let you come. It had to be the most irksome and repetitive task he's ever done. Simple and easy.
And maybe he had been a little cruel with you. But you were a demon. You shouldn't be acting like a wimp. You needed to grow up and deal with it. Softness only led to injury here.
Which reminded him....
Where the hell were you?
You weren't at the spot he left you at. Didn't he tell you not to move. Why of all times you chose to be disobedient, he didn't know. You always did what you were told. So why now were you being a brat and hiding.
He undid the bandage on his forehead and opened his Jagan, using it to search the compound for you. Room by room, hallway by hallway.
But he couldn't sense you.
And only then did ice run through his veins. You weren't here. He left you and told you to stay put, and now you were gone.
Did you run away?
No, you loved the others. You'd want a way to go back to them.
Did you leave to find him?
No, you didn't like Hiei as far as he knew.
So what could it be?
What could have possibly explained your disappearance?
Were you taken?
No.
That couldn't be it. Because if it was, he was screwed.
It would be his fault.
Whatever the hell had happened to you...
If you were dead or injured, it was his fault.
And he knew the others would never forgive him for it. Hell, he wouldn't be able to forgive himself if your body was found somewhere. He said he would watch over you. He gave his word you would come back unharmed.
You were just a child.
And if you were dead....
He made his way outside and used his Jagan to search for any trace of you. Anything that would give him a clue to where you were. He got wind of a spike of spirit energy.
His body already on the move towards it. And in his third eye, he saw you screaming. He pushed his limits as far as they would go to get there faster.
★★★★
He didn't know what to expect when he got there. But it wasn't this. A sight he never thought he'd see again.
You were splattered with blood, but alive. The demons around you were dead or on the verge of it. You were backed against a tree with your dagger jutted out. Tears streaming down your face while you shook uncontrollably.
He tried to approach you, but you just cried harder and curled in on yourself. Mind so frantic, you didn't recognize him. Or maybe you did and you just didn't want him near you.
He really shouldn't have been that cruel to you.
There was nothing he could do about that now. He needed to bring you back, but as he took another step towards you, you lashed out at him.
Taking a precise swing he barley avoided. A warning to keep back. Just like the one you gave back at that trafficking ring. You were cutthroat like this. Fear making you stronger.
Despite his reluctance, he used his Jagan to put you to sleep. The only other option besides knocking you out. You'd been through enough today. Kurama would deal with the rest. You liked him the best anyways.
He picked you up carefully and quickly made his way back towards the barrier. The sooner you got out of here, the better it was for everyone.
What was it that detective said? Try to make you laugh? He couldn't do that. He doubted you would have listened anyways if he tried.
The oaf! What was it about you and food? You liked the sweet concoctions the humans made. The ones that would turn your teeth to dust. But there was no way you would ever take anything from him.
And Kurama? He was incapable of showing the same softness that fox did. Of being that vulnerable. He had a feeling he'd just make it worse.
The only thing he could do now was keep you under until he reached Genkai's little shack. Then he'd be able to get Kurama to deal with you.
The small home was in sight. He pushed himself a little further as the sun peaked over the mountains. Making rapid knocks against the door frame until it slid open.
"What do we have here? I don't suppose you're here to see Yukina?" The old lady greeted.
Then she noticed the frantic state Hiei was in. The stoic demon had lost his composure. And in his arms was a smaller being who looked to be having nightmares.
"Whatever you did, good luck explaining that to the other three boys."
★★★★
Kurama was furious to say the least upon spying Hiei outside. You weren't with him, which meant one thing.
"What happened?" Emerald eyes flashing an eerie golden.
"I'll explain on the way. They aren't harmed physically, but I...I don't know how to handle this."
That was all it took for the fox demon to rush over. Eyes falling on your curled up form when he got there with Hiei following suit.
Puu had you enveloped in his feathers. Making soft cooing sounds at you while you thrashed in your sleep. Trying to calm you down. He was part of Yusuke's soul after all.
The Phoenix hissed as Hiei and Kurama approached.
"It's okay. Let me help them, then they're all yours until Yusuke gets back." Kurama coaxed, inching towards where you were sleeping.
Puu begrudgingly sat still and let him get closer. A type of flower bloomed from Kurama. He held it up to your nose, and all at once your body went limp. Relaxing against the nightmares that plagued your mind.
He lightly moved around your face, checking for any injuries. There were none. He released you and let Puu tuck you back in.
The next few days the process would repeat. Kurama would soothe you whenever you started thrashing around in your sleep. And Hiei would watch from the side, guilt starting to consume him.
You didn't deserve this.
You had never done anything to directly spite him.
And the one time you tried to talk to him, he dismissed you.
He was only hard on you because he wanted you to stop being weak. He wanted you to be strong and stop getting scared by everything. Turns out you were just scared of him.
When you awoke a few more days later, Kurama pushed for him to leave. To give you some space to adjust. And while he physically left the room, he still kept his Jagan on you.
"Are you okay?" Kurama asked.
You shook your head and started crying. You were pulled into a hug by the fox demon. Sobbing into his stomach as you remembered what happened.
"If you want, I can make those bad memories disappear. If you don't want to see them anymore, then you don't have to."
And you shook your head once again.
"I-hiccup- don't wanna forget. I don't like what happened, but forgetting is even worse!" Your words barley comprehensible, but understood nevertheless.
"Okay. Just try to relax for now. Kuwabara and Yusuke will be back soon."
That seemed to calm you down for the time being.
And it was then Hiei realized you were not as weak as he had previously thought. You were bearing the burden of what happened. Something that you didn't even verbalize to Kurama. You'd also managed to defeat all those demons by yourself without being injured. Your power unpredictable than what you'd been showing these past few months.
He doubted you would forgive him, but if you did, then he would train you to protect yourself. Give you better control of your strength so you'd be ready if this ever happened again. It would never happen again.
Maybe then this awful feeling would finally go away. The feeling that had him lingering here instead of attending to his duties in the Demon World. The one that made him feel like scum everytime he caught sight of you.
★★★★
Safe to say, Yusuke and Kuwabara were not happy when they got back. Both fussing over you with the former wrestling you away from his spirit beast.
"What happened? Whose ass do I have to kick?!?!"
You shook your head and looked away from him. It was just like when they had first met you. All that progress of having you come out of your shell gone.
"You don't look so great. How about I take you back to mine and I'll cook you up a big dinner? You can take all the blankets if you want, too."
But despite Kuwabara's encouragement, you still shook your head.
"Wanna stay here. It's safe." You finally responded.
"You sure?"
You nodded this time.
You really didn't feel safe being out in the open again. And you had no doubt Hiei already told them it was all your fault. He was probably waiting to chew you out for not staying put.
"Well in that case, guess I'm sleeping over. What about you?" Kuwabara's question directed at the greasy haired boy.
"My mom won't give a damn either way. I'm good to be here for a few days. Which reminds me...."
He pulled a small penguin plushie from his bag.
"I got this for you, you little squirt. Hug it tight and it'll get rid of all your nightmares."
You took the toy from his hand and immediately squeezed it in a hug. It took all of about five seconds before you started crying.
"Hey! What's wrong!?!?"
"I love it so-hiccup-much!!!"
You were bonked softly on the back of your head.
"You had me going for a second...Now, give me names and addresses. Somebody needs to pay for making my kid cry."
"I'm with ya, Urameshi! Let's teach em' a lesson!"
You were finally able to crack a smile after that.
★★★★
So it began again. The three of them volunteering to stay with you while you rested at Genkai's. A certain three eyed demon watching from afar. No longer upset by your presence, but worried.
You were okay now, but if something like that happened again, Spirit World would surely do something about it. You were already under enough scrutiny as it was.
Right now, you were currently conversing with Yukina, of all people. Both of you talking in hushed tones.
"It's nice to have another person around. Genkai's nice, but it's not the same."
You nodded at her words.
"Yeah, I like the others but they can be rowdy at times. It's nice talking."
You decided you liked her.
But her eyes looked familiar. Like Hiei's.
But there was no way.
Right?
"Why did you leave the demon world? Don't you miss your family?" You asked.
"I left to find my brother. He was cast into the sea by our people. As for them, well... They were too set in their ways. Hearts as cold and frozen as our land. I didn't want to be apart of that anymore."
You put a hand on her shoulder.
"Oh. I'm sorry for asking."
Yukina smiled at you with a soft expression.
"Don't be. That chapter of my life is closed now. Though I do still hope to come across my brother one day... What about you? Where is your family?"
"I was taken from them by some humans a few decades back. They trapped me and...It wasn't pleasant, what they did to me. But they're gone now. That part of my life is closed too. Now I'm beginning again with people who treat me with so much kindness, it feels like I'm dreaming."
You two had more in common than Hiei would have liked.
He really shouldn't have been so cruel to you.
It was decided. He was going to train you. Maybe swallow his pride and apologize.
It wouldn't be easy convincing the others, but he was going to try. The first obstacle was Kuwabara. That oaf wouldn't let him near you without a fight. And while he understood, it was for your own good.
"N-O! The answer is no. Last time we left you alone with them, they were kidnapped!!!"
"They need to get stronger."
"No they don't! We'll protect them from anything that happens!"
"You weren't there the last time."
It was like arguing with a brick wall. Eventually it circled back to him and Yusuke being the ones that would train you. To which Hiei brought up the point they'd be too soft with you. They'd hold back and go easy.
It was enough.
The next obstacle was Yusuke. Whose first response was to fight at the suggestion. Another troublesome task to deal with.
"You didn't even like them a few weeks ago! Why the hell should we trust you again!!!"
"You can check up on them."
"Like that puts me at ease! You'd be too rough with them! They're just a little kid!"
And Hiei has to bring up the point of your power going unchecked. If spirit world found out about this, you'd probably be executed. But if you learned to control yourself, that possibility would never happen. If you got stronger, you wouldn't get hurt.
It didn't take much convincing after that.
The final obstacle was Kurama, who would be the hardest to convince without consequences.
"Let me train them."
He received a glare in response.
"No."
Flat and simple.
"They need guidance."
"You couldn't guarantee their safety upon arrival. Am I supposed to believe you won't scar them further?"
He offered up the only thing he had left.
"My life. You have my life they'll be safe with me."
"Very well, but it's not me you have to convince."
It was you.
And when he approached you, you looked down and silenced yourself. Tensing up like he was going to yell at you.
"Have you recovered?" It sounded more like a command than question.
But you nodded anyways.
He used to like how quiet you were. Now he despised it.
"For five months you will train nonstop. You will get ahold of your spirit energy. And you will be capable enough to defend yourself without crying. Do you understand?"
But this time you did say something in return. Something unexpected.
"No. I don't want to go."
He had never been nice to you before. Never wanted to spend time with you. So you were suspicious. And maybe you secretly believed he left you on purpose for those other demons to find. That he set you up in the hopes you'd be dead when he got there.
You squeezed the penguin you were given. It really did calm you down.
You didn't want to give him a chance anymore.
"It's for your benefit, not mine." And he internally cringed at what was to come next.
"I apologize for my behavior, let me do what's right."
If anyone besides you heard that, he'd kill them. But for now he was awaiting your response.
You tilted your head as you thought of what to say. This was different. Hiei never apologized for anything. Least of all you. And you were sure this is the most you two have ever talked.
"Are you really sorry?" You still didn't believe him quite yet.
"Yes." And he further swallowed down his pride for your trust.
"And you won't be mean anymore?"
"Yes."
You took a deep breath.
"Okay."

I have a fic idea for an alternate universe where Kurama never met Shiori (I AM SO SORRY) and took the form of a small fox instead and was found and taken care of as a pet by Yusuke and Atsuko when he was a boy. It was Atsuko who got ran over by a car after saving a child in this story. She goes comatose in the hospital for this. Yusuke is about to become an orphan with no one to take care of him.
In order to repay his life debt, Kurama shapeshifts to help Yusuke save his mother by telling him about a heist he planned to do with Hiei. So in this AU, the three thieves that ransack Reikai's vault are Hiei, Kurama and Yusuke.
Kurama only reveals his identity as Yusuke's pet fox while trying to die for him and his mother but Yusuke, like in canon, still does not let him.
They all get pardoned by Koenma eventually but all of them are criminals paying for their crimes with "community service".

Forgot to mention in the review but *SPOILERS*
the makai insects (the one that Suzaku controls with the bagpipe looking thing in the anime) appear in ep 1. It was super interesting to see it play out and I enjoyed it. The insect is also way bigger than I thought it would be. I thought it would be the size of a mosquito but nah
Yusuke’s death is way more aggressive and bloodier compared to both the anime and manga it shocked me so much I had to do a double take 😆
I also like how the truck driver is listening to Hohoemi no Bakudan 🥰 it’s only a small part but I literally got chills when I heard it (in a good way) this is also from the first episode.
Koenma and Botan are PERFECT
Yusuke eating ramen at the Yukimura restaurant (run by Keiko’s family and she works there)
Elder Toguro shapeshifting into Hiei to kidnap Keiko… wasn’t expecting that but it was terrifying
TOGURO BROTHERS ESPECIALLY ELDER TOGURO ARE TERRIFYING
Shizuru (Kuwabara’s sister) unfortunately doesn’t make an appearance in the series but Atsuko (Yusuke’s mother) does
Keiko is way more involved in the series
Hiei and Kuwabara still banter at times which I love
* super tired when I did the review it was midnight *

“Death does not rest, Yusuke. Souls need sorting, employees need guidance, reapers need direction. There’s never a moment the cogs aren’t turning on this wheel that is Reikai. You know that.”
No matter how overworked Koenma is, he absolutely can't afford to take a break.
Well... Perhaps he can take just a small break. For Yusuke's sake.
*** New Yusuke/Koenma fanfic!! I had a great time writing this. My own life is very much so overworked and overstressed and I feel like Koenma can relate to that. The difference between me and Ko is that he has a Yusuke who can help him out lol!
If you decide to read it, first and foremost thank you <3 Let me know what you think! And secondly, mind the tags <3

hi v,
i'm afraid i'm not a 'shipper,' but i'd be curious to know:
what are your top ten favourite anime ships?
Hi! Thank you for your question!
To be honest, I've left my shipping days far behind me especially since I got into writing Reader Inserts — I can't even remember the last time I rooted enthusiastically for a ship (besides Garashir and Janeway/Chakotay from Star Trek DS9 and Voyager).
(Also, I just wanna quickly clarify that I don't actually ship Mizuki and Gegero, even if I do see/understand why they're very popular when I saw the film. I was just awestruck by the official art, haha)
And I know there's currently a ton of debate surrounding shipping, to which I'd like say that I seldom have any icks or squicks when it comes to pairings. If I dislike a ship, it's probably because of a bad experience I had with their fans. However, I would add that my favourite ships are pretty vanilla and tame, and more often than not the result of my asking, "What if these two randoms were placed in a room with one bed together?" I love a niche pairing with zero fics written for them on AO3, lol.
So yeah, I'm gonna spotlight some of my niche pairings that I enjoy quite a fair bit! All of them are het and slash ships, I'm afraid, out of sheer coincidence that most of my favourite characters are male. I do love femslash/yuri ships as well, but they're generally quite popular, so I wouldn't be contributing anything new. They're not ranked in order of preference because I love them all!
Hijikata/Otae, Gin Tama: I love Otae so, so much, and I think she gets a ton of unwarranted hate from a vocal minority of the fandom on Twitter and Reddit. The GinTae vs GinTsu debate is still very real in 2024, but I think my girl deserves a man who earns a stable income and doesn't denigrate her appearance.
Koenma/Botan, Yu Yu Hakusho: The first of many niche pairings to come. Botan is such a lovely girl who is friendly with every one, but I get a kick out of imagining the two of them getting into all sorts of trouble and shenanigans whilst nagivating the bureaucratic hell that is, well, Hell, and falling in love in the process. And have you see the official art of them together? It's so cute!
Ogata/Sai, Hikaru no Go: I was so disappointed when I didn't find any content of them both! I think Ogata would have gone insane had he been the one to stumble upon Sai's Go board, before falling in love with him, and then into despair as he realised he cannot touch the one person he loved and idolised the most.
Muzan/Tamayo, Kimetsu no Yaiba: As a KnY fic writer, I feel obliged to include at least one ship from this fandom. I love all canon and fanon pairings in this work (a rare thing for me, personally), but I especially love the divorced couple dynamic between them both. The most recent season finale cemented that belief for me, and I do spend a lot of time brainrotting over their past before Muzan encountered Yoriichi.
Kusakabe/Utahime, Jujutsu Kaisen: I stumbled upon this fanart a long time ago, and thought: "Spectacular; give me 14 of them right now." He's an experienced First-Grade sorcerer who's honestly not the best teacher, she's a Second-Grade sorcerer who loves her students — they bond over their mutual irritation for Gojo and absolutely hooked up during the exchange event.
Shunsui/Ukitake, Bleach: What's there not to love about Old Men Yaoi? I've loved these two ever since I saw them, individually and a pairing, and I don't I will ever forgive Kubo for separating them in TYBW (albeit in a good way). The Hell arc was just the icing on the cake — a reverse star-crossed lovers, if you will.
Ryoga/Ranma, Ranma 1/2: I love a small-stakes rivalry, and there's something very cute about a guy who absolutely does not care about the gender of his opponent and will stop at nothing to fight them.
Shishiba/Osaragi, Sakamoto Days: Let it be known that I've clocked this couple ever since they first appeared in the manga, and I staunchly believe that they're endgame. Chapter 161 was everything — nothing can convince me otherwise that they're just mentor and mentee. Have you ever seen a mentee stroke her mentor's cheek as he laid bleeding on the ground, saying: "I'll be right back. Don't die"? Yeah, I thought so.
Mitsui/Yohei, Slam Dunk: I wish I could give a better explanation for why I love them so much, but really — the moment I saw Yohei beating the crap out of Mitsui with relative ease and zero effort despite being the smaller guy, I just felt the yaoi monster stirring in its sleep and shaking my bones. A former student athlete-turned-delinquent crossing paths with an actual delinquent makes for such fantastic tension, really.
Jotaro/Kira, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: I actually thought very long and hard about my favourite JJBA ship, because, like KnY, I love all of the characters and have no issue with either canon or fanon pairings. But then, I saw this fanart of JoKira/KiraJo, and it scratched such a specific itch inside my head that I have not been the same ever since.
Here it is! I had an fun time thinking about my favourite ships and choosing those that were truly obscure; some of them — HijiTae and ShunUki — are fairly popular, but I think my preference for them trumped any other rarepair I could have thought of for that fanbase.
xoxo, V ♥️

Disillusion
Written for @Koenma-week
Summary: Koenma isn't very old when he becomes disillusioned by his father. When his eyes awaken to the truth. (angst, trauma, child abuse, xenophobia, about 2k words)
***
Koenma is fourteen, a true fourteen, when his father lets him come to work.
Enma looks at his child, strokes a measuring hand down the top of his head, and tells him, "It's time you felt what your first stamp on a life's contract does." He looks pleased at the thought, and Koenma is only a little frightened by his father's expression.
His father's smiles never looked... happy. Just cruel, superior, and unkind.
Koenma often feels small in his father's presence, the height not having much to do with it. His father has an important job as ruler of the spirit world, the person who judges the dead, at least for Japan, and a section of the Makai. But that position is revered and makes his father a powerful man.
A mountain that Koenma's not sure he can measure up to.
"Remember, as high as we are, there's always someone higher, and while we never see them, we must listen. But also remember," Enma says with a sneer, "We are better than the other rulers of the Spirit world with their pitiful territories. The rulers over the territory in China, for instance, have four rulers, instead of one---they are so inferior! And the Americas are so pathetic, that they have Ten! Ha! Ten rulers needed to judge a simple soul, and keep an eye on their district!"
Koenma lets his father ramble, uncomfortable by his father's words. He is still young and doesn't know how to explain that his father's words are unkind and make him feel... wrong. He also holds his tongue in pointing out that the territories that have more leaders, are also larger, and therefore might need more hands in aiding all the work.
Surely, judging a soul is not an easy task.
"Here we are son," Enma says at last, guiding the inexperienced prince into the office. "Sit down. I am going to give you a paper, you read it aloud to the spirit, and then judge the soul. I have the stamp and seal left out for you."
Koenma is guided into a cushy seat, and an overlarge desk. The chair on it's own adjusts its height to the desk, usually meant for his father's size, and not his. His feet dangle high off the floor, and he feels even younger and more inexperienced as he waits behind the desk, that is meant for a frame six times his size.
His father takes a place against the wall, and Koenma looks down at the desk. There is one sheet of paper before him, a pad of red ink, and a golden seal. He itches to touch it instincts telling him that this is duty, to hold the heavy stamp in his hand, but he keeps his hands folded on the table and waits.
The spirit that is marched in is middle-aged Ronin, with long black hair. His back is straight and his brown eyes are at peace. Uncomfortably, his body is riddled with arrows, in his chest and back, but the spirit does not seem to notice them. The Ronin marches before Koenma, and then takes a seated kneeling position, his hands resting on his thigh as he awaits judgment.
Koenma nervously takes up the paper, and ignores how his voice cracks as he reads the document, "Hoshino Ryota, age forty-seven. Died in battle against the feudal lord of his territory."
"Yes," The spirit answers when Koenma pauses.
Koenma shoots a nervous glance at his father, to see if he has already messed up what he was supposed to do, but Enma does not look at him and instead remains passively facing the front.
Koenma licks his lips, and returns to reading, "Hoshino picked up his sword and led a rebellion against the lord of his territory due to his lord's crimes. As Hoshino is the loser of this battle, he shall be sentenced to wander in hell for a hundred years, before a chance of reincarnation."
The Ronin's mouth ripples, and he closes his eyes.
He does not voice a complaint against the sentence.
Koenma rereads the paper, the short document disturbing him deeply. He turns the paper around, looking for more details, but he finds none. 'This can't be right...' Koenma thinks, and traces the words, '...led a rebellion against the lord of his territory due to his lord's crimes.'
The words glow, and new words spring to life, an extension adding to the paper.
Koenma reads it aloud eagerly, "The lord's crimes consisted of heavy over taxation, stealing of crops, abduction of women, and children, murder, and rape."
Koenma blinks at the lengthy list of sins, and mutters, "Well then Hoshino Ryota had every right to rebel!"
Enma clears his throat, and Koenma jumps to look at his father. Enma is not looking at him, but his face is red with clear anger. Koenma is doing something wrong. Sweating now, Koenma slides his eyes to the Ronin, who is sagging a little in his seat, the weight of despair heavy on his shoulders. He still says nothing against Koenma's earlier sentencing, but his eyes look up at the anxious Prince.
The warrior's eyes ask for nothing and expect nothing.
This human's soul, does not expect justice or kindness, and Koenma's insides twist as he realizes it.
He adverts his eyes quickly away and picks up the stamp.
'Am I really just supposed to send him away to hell? Just like that? Isn't a hundred years a whole lifetime for a human?' Koenma thinks, his mind busy with what he should do.
He touches his finger over Hoshino Ryota's name and wills a question into the name: What were Hoshino Ryota's actions during the rebellion?
Words flooded the paper, and silently Koenma read to himself, 'Hoshino Ryoto robbed from the wealthy Lord and his vassals, and distributed money, goods, and food. He freed slaves and hostages. He spared those who could no longer fight and allowed those not involved in the rebellion to flee the battle. Common sins: Lying, stealing, and envy. Uncommon sins: Murder during times of war.'
This list of Common sins and Uncommon sins made Koenma's head buzz harder. This was a lot to absorb. The common sins were what Koenma might expect from any mortal, and even the uncommon sin of murder was understandable, given the fact that the Ronin was in the midst of a rebellious war. Was the document counting death in times of war, as murder? That couldn't be right... it certainly wasn't fair!
Koenma remained silent, knowing he had no one to ask... or at least no one who would answer.
Koenma, having more confidence with how this paper worked, trailed his hand down the sentencing and tapped it. At his touch, the sentencing changed. Koenma smiled, cycling through suggestions of sentencing. It seemed the Ronin could not get away without going unpunished for being "the loser," of his rebellion, but Koenma saw no reason to judge the man harshly.
Judging someone for losing in battle delt pedantic at best, and plain stupid at worst.
He settled on a new sentence, that he found to be more befitting of the mortal, cleared his throat, and read aloud, "Under reconsideration of the mortal's struggles, As Hoshino Ryota is the looser of this battle, he shall be sentenced to wander in hell for three years before a chance of reincarnation, or a chance at peace and rectitude in the level beyond."
Koenma pressed his stamp into the red pad of ink and then stamped the document.
The paper disappeared into gold light, and Koenma felt a small bit of warmth flood his body, generating a renewing sense of energy inside him he had never felt before. He lifted his head and saw the Ronin had bowed low to Koenma. When he got up, there were tears in his eyes, and while the warrior still kept his silence, he looked at Koenma with a face of gratitude and wonder. He rose to his feet, and his human form fell away, and he became an orb of spiritual essence, bobbed what looked like a bow, and turned away, floating outside the large doors he had come through.
'That felt good!' Koenma thought with a smile, pleased with his handling of that sentencing.
And then his father curled a mighty hand around him, holding Koenma like he was a mere doll in his meaty fist. Enma shook Koenma hard, Koenma's head snapping and rolling painfully as he was shaken around wildly. Enma howled, "You little fool! You were to read the paper and stamp it! That was it!"
"F-Father! Father wait," Koenma cried, feeling sick from the dizzying shake, "But... but his circumstances, the crimes of his lord-"
"His lord will be judged when he comes here!" Enma snapped. The paper does it all for us! You read it, stamp it, and move on!"
Enma threw Koenma who went skidding across the marbled floor before he smacked into an ornate pillar, the wind knocking out of him as he collided against it. He curled against the piller atrying to catch his breath.
"Foolish little idiot!" Enma raged, "Do not make your work harder! You were supposed to stamp the paper and experience the completion of a contract, that was it!"
"But I... that warmth," Koenma managed when he could find the words to speak, "That... that warmth, I felt it. When I... when I completed the contract. When I stamped-"
"That is nothing!" Enma snapped dismissively. He heaved a great sigh, and put his fingers to his brow, "That little bit of energy is nothing! Don't you know, the harsher the sentencing, the more strength we get?! If you want to become a giant like myself, you will learn to do as the paper says!"
Enma lumbered over to his cushy seat, and sank into it with a depressive sigh, "You disgust me. Away with you. When you are a hundred years of age, we will try this again, and if you do it correctly, I will entrust you with work. But not a moment before!"
Koenma painfully got on all fours, his spine popping sharply as his back muscles spasmed.
"Get out!" Enma roared, slamming a fist on his desk.
Koenma was forced to crawl out of the office, his body hurting too much to allow himself to attempt to stand, let alone walk.
"Oh dear, oh dear, Lord Koenma, are you alright?" A kind voice said, as he made it past his Father's ornate office doors. Gentle hands fell on his back. He looked up into the face of a concerned blue-haired woman, her pink eyes wide with concern.
Koenma made to speak, but found there was nothing to say.
What was he supposed to say?
The woman's hands glowed, as she pressed a shooting golden energy into his back, something that was reminiscent of what completing the Ronin's life contract had felt like. After a moment, he was well enough to stand, and the woman kept a hand around his waist as she offered to walk him back to his room.
Swirling with the realization of his father's true face, Koenma quietly accepted it, and let her walk him down the hall. She babbled at him, but he found that he could not focus on her words, or find his own words to say, even if he longed to talk, to ask questions.
Was his father always like that?
To employees?
To souls?
Did he never consider lessoning a mortal soul's burden?
Even if they had suffered?
"It'll be okay..." The woman's words finally registered just outside his bedroom.
He looked at her, her face cast down to the floor, "You'll get used to it."
Koenma's eyes flashed, and a golden flicker burned in his eyes, "No."
She turned to him, and he shook his head, "No... I will never get used to it. I will never judge like that."
"My prince," the woman whispered, pink eyes gentle with concern, "if you don't, then you will amass power slowly, and your journey to Godhood will become stunted. You'll never be the massive form like your father... you'll be small, weak. A child in comparison."
"Better a child who knows better... than a giant monster who doesn't," Koenma reasoned, before pushing away from the woman, to go into his room and rest.
There was a lot to think about, a quiet rebellion stirring in his heart.
Things could not remain this way.
Before he shut the door on the ferry woman who was staring at him with open shock, he wondered privately, if that little bit of strength completing Hoshino Ryota's contract, had been the man's will. The will to lead a rebellion against cruelness and tyranny.
Time would have to tell Koenma how brave he could be.

"Kurama would undoubtedly look good in a skirt, he's already quite pretty so I think he could pull off anything. It's a shame he rarely puts his hair up. Hiei... I think would kill me. And the sour expression he always wears might spoil the mood. But he's so small, he could get away with wearing any size heels. And does his hair stand up like that naturally? Maybe it comes down when it's wet, oh that'd be interesting to see. Does the jagan eye have eyelashes... Kuwabara is very tall and muscular, he has a handsome face. Ooh, maybe a longer cocktail dress, with his hair down! I think Lord Koenma could pull it off, in his adult form, he has a cute face. I'll have to discuss this with everyone the next time we have a girl's night. Though I do think it would be nice to seem them all in something more.. cleaned up. Like a nice kimono. They're always wearing clothes for fighting..."

Maze Chapter Two: Renegade Pt. 2
“Kurama, how long is the barrier going to take?” Hiei asked, the waiting was getting to him in ways Hiei hadn’t expected. “I would say another half hour if I’m going on the right path. I don’t understand why a barrier like this would be made.” Kurama answered as the area around him started having a warping effect.
“Clearly, whoever made the damn barrier was an absolute mad genius of some kind.” Hiei raised an eyebrow that Kurama was having issues with that barrier. “I’m not entirely sure, of course the demon world’s barrier is a challenge, but this barrier makes ours look like child’s play. Whoever designed it, clearly made it so nothing could get in or out. Unfortunately for the designer, I’m about close to cracking it.” Kurama said as he received a small shock before resuming on breaking the barrier.
“Fuck, Kurama, you’re going to have to rush it..” Hiei stood up on top of the roof, noticing something coming through the woods. “That’s great, just great!” Kurama started to go faster with the barrier break down, the warping intensifying as a fabric like ripping sound could be heard from the rush job.
The sound of vehicles approaching could be heard, as the rift to the next world had been opened. It was an ugly sight to behold this rift, jagged and horizontal like an opened wound, opened to both them as well as whatever was over on the other side of the rift to enter. There was a strong sickness in the pits of both Kurama and Hiei as they looked upon that horribly deformed rift, knowing there was no choice but to enter it. The sight of Kuwabara’s family van and the sight of Tomoko’s motorcycle could be seen around the bend as Kurama hastily picked up the dimension jumper, making a dash for the van. Hiei followed Kurama’s lead in entering the van like Kurama did as the fox youkai stumbled to get the keys into the ignition. Hiei looked on tensely, knowing full well what the consequences were going to be if they’re both caught.
“Hurry up! They’re coming and I don’t want to deal with Kuwabara’s stupid ass face!” Hiei yelled as Kurama started the van. “I got it! Get the device onto the dashboard now Hiei!” Kurama revved up the van, ready to drive full speed into the gaping maul of the hideous rift.
“Kurama where the hell did you get fae technology!?” Hiei was horrified to even be holding the device as meaty tendrils came out from its shell to latch onto the dashboard, activating it’s interdimensional abilities.
“No time, hold onto Yusuke!” Kurama gunned it, sending the van speeding towards the rift and entering it with a disturbing popping sound.
Hiei launched himself from the front seat to the back, using his body to anchor and shield Yusuke from harm as the van sped through the twisting and turning seas of the broken barrier, the rift’s unstable nature warping everything in their perception as they drove on towards that destination ahead. Kurama clutched the steering wheel tightly, a familiar pain coursing from their abdominal region as blood slowly trickled down from his mouth. It’ll be fine, just perfect fine, a matra that repeated in Kurama’s mind as he kept on track of the bigger goal ahead. Back on the other side of the rift, Kuwabara, having seen the van go inside of the interdimensional rift, was about to enter it before a panicked Koenma forced him to stop the car. Bits of mud and grass kicked up in the wake of the car stopping, signaling to Tomoko to pull over her motorcycle as she watched Kuwabara exit the van with Koenma and her mother. Tomoko was ready to take action, not yet realizing the absolutely horrified expression on Koenma’s face as he gazed at the rift as though it was the hypercenter of a nuclear detonation.
“We had this barrier up for a reason!” Koenma huffed as he ran a hand through his hair, rightfully freaked out. “This is a rift to the human world’s feral younger sibling, a registered godkiller world! How did Kurama even find out about this!?” “Koenma, you need to explain some shit right now cause Keiko is hyperventilating and Tomoko over there is looking ready to ram her damn bike into the portal!” Kuwabara consoled Keiko the best he could while Tomoko looked ready to commit brutal acts of violence on her motorcycle. “You’re not going to like this, my Dad told me stories back when Earth was new. They wanted a practice world, you see, to test out just how wild they could get with the flora and fauna before unleashing it into Earth.” Koenma watched the concerned expressions from the group.
“Things were fine at the start, we got the tiktaalik that was brought over to Earth, but then evolution happened. That practice world, its evolutionary path, went wild, especially once humanity started to appear. The humans developed abilities that would eclipse Yusuke’s by leagues, easy god killers if they were given reasons to retaliate. It was a group decision to seal off the practice world and leave it to its own devices.” Koenma continued to the very shocked group upon learning there’s a murder dimension neighboring theirs.
“In simpler terms, the human world and demon world were considered the much more easygoing realms. We had no problems handling it. Let that sink in for a bit. We had to keep this world a secret, mainly because even my father didn’t wish a demon such a fate of falling into that realm. Sure souls are still collected, but we have a specially trained force to handle them for the hall of judgment.” Koenma finished that long explanation to the group as Tomoko’s face bore the same angered expression that her father once had.  “Are you telling me that my Uncle Kurama and that teacup-sized punk dragged my Father’s body into planet Australia!?” Tomoko revved the motorcycle, very much ready to go into that dimensional rift before being stopped.
“Tomoko, don’t you even think about driving into that portal!” Kuwabara shouted as he stepped into the pathway, forcing Tomoko to park the motorcycle.
“He’s right, don’t even go into that portal. I already lost Urameshi due to my own incompetence as a leader who couldn’t even stop a hostile takeover. I refuse to have that repeat with you.” Koenma took out a cellphone from the pocket of his sweatpants before making some calls.
“My Dad is over there! He needs to be brought back to his family RIGHT NOW!” Tomoko protested as she got off the motorcycle, ready to raise hell in order to get Yusuke back for her Mom. “And we will! Just give Koenma time. He’s doing something that I didn’t think he’d do after all this time.” Kuwabara held Tomoko back from adding more trouble than the situation was already.
“Come on ogre, pick up NOW… Kuwabara, I’m going to ask you to use your spirit sword incase ANYTHING tries to break through the barrier.” Koenma started grinding his teeth from the stress of the situation from just how bad things were.
“I thought you said these things were god killers?” Kuwabara looked panicked as he got up the spirit sword as instructed, moving Tomoko to the side. “I know, but with how awful that rift is, there’s a chance whatever that exits it could be heavily deformed or injured from the travel. Even then, they still pose a danger to the humans here if something gets loose.” Koenma started pacing about as Tomoko looked horrified upon hearing that. “If that’s the case, what’s going to happen to my Dad!?” Tomoko looked at the hideous rift, the possibility of her father dying from disfiguring injuries instead of peacefully in a hospital horrified Tomoko.
There was no answer for that question as Koenma paced about on the cellphone as Kuwabara looked on at the rift before them. There was nothing to do except wait on Jorge to pick up on the phone as Tomoko went to not only comfort her mother, but herself as well. The possibility of this becoming a body recovery mission hung heavy in their thoughts not just for Yusuke, but for Kurama and Hiei as well. Returning to the travelers in the rift, the scenery was simply grotesque of shifting shapes and colors one would have never thought possible if Hiei was actually looking on at this. Only one that is was Kurama as he struggled with the damages his internal organs were dealing with amongst other things as he glanced in the rear view mirror. There was a grunt of pain and frustration as Kurama pushed on through the rift onto the other side of it. The van came to a stop upon entering the otherworld, somewhere that looked like a desert with a city up ahead surrounded by junk yards as far as Kurama’s eyes could see before vomiting up blood from the hard ride.

A Game of Chance- Chapter Five
A/N: After this chap is when Kouki begins to have more autonomy, thank you for sticking it through with me <3 CW: Slavery, light master/slave relationship, gambling, PTSD, hybrids, mating, marking, biting, blood, pain, torture, violence, original fem character, oc x Hiei, slow burn
---
Chapter Five: Making Headway
Hiei ran, relishing in his feet pounding the ground, in the branches bending as he jumped off of them. He ran while the others used one of those damned mechanic contraptions, a car. He would never be caught in one of those. They were death. Small, slow, confined, anyone could kill you in them.
The chip in his pocket vibrated, Kouki reaching out to feed off his excitement, her energy nearly singing. Hiei didn’t brush her off like usual. Too focused on moving, on feeling alive after being stuck inside the city too long.
They were moving out toward the old woman’s temple, Genkai. She had agreed to help with their current problem. Kouki… his mind wandered for a moment, and she reacted to it. Her youki turned questioning and he snarled, pushing her away. She recoiled as if burned and Hiei focused on pushing himself faster.
Yusuke had made it sound like Genkai had agreed grudgingly. Yet there had to be a reason if that were true. What wasn’t Koenma telling them?
Hiei hated being kept in the dark, being made to run errands, it made him irritated that he had been relegated to a babysitter. Getting out of the city, into the sprawling, spirit filled woods surrounding the temple was the next best thing to being in the Makai. He would never admit it aloud, but he was excited to reach their destination.
It’s probably why he’d allowed himself to get so far ahead of the others. He hadn’t waited at all. Usually he’d pace himself more, scout and keep a watch over them. His skin was itching though and when he finally saw the mountainous staircase in front of him, he bared his teeth in a feral smile. The chip shivered in his pocket, and he halted, it was growing warmer and vibrating and when he pulled it out of his pocket to look at it a burning hellfire of light burst forth. Standing in front of him was Kouki in her demonic form.
She stood with her nose pointing at the stairs before she looked at him. He nodded.
“We are going there,” he said. “Come, you can keep up, can’t you?”
Her quills rattled along her back, and she huffed before leaping onto the steps. She only paused long enough to look over her shoulder at him. Waiting for him. He scoffed; he wouldn’t wait for her.
He took off at top speed, expecting to leave her behind instantly. She fell back some, but she kept an easy loping pace that only had her dipping in and out of his sight on occasion. She continued to surprise him. He smirked before turning forward again.
Genkai was waiting for them at the foot of the temple stairs. Her eyes narrowed as Hiei stopped in front of her, but she wasn’t looking at him. Instead, her gaze was focused on Kouki silently coming to stand beside him. The demon pulled back her lips from her massive fangs as she let out a warning growl, her quills rattling.
“Kouki,” Hiei snapped, and the beast huffed before sitting heavily.
“This thing is what I’m supposed to help with?” Genkai asked critically.
The old woman was shrewd and likely knew as much as they knew about the situation but being faced with the reality of only one of Kouki’s sides, it likely made them look like fools. Hiei knew that look. She often gave it when the detective was around.
“She is…,” Hiei searched for the words to satisfy himself and the psychic. “An anomaly. Kouki is not always like this. But when she is I cannot communicate with her much at all. Beyond I suppose what you just saw.”
“Controlling her?” Genkai was roving her eyes over the great beast beside him.
“Hn,” he nodded. “Though she only listens because of the contract.”
Kouki’s energy touched his and he saw her head turn to look at him. Her feral eyes blinked slowly at him, softening. Trust… there was more to their bond now. Whatever he had done to gain it, she trusted him of her own volition now.
“I think there’s a little more than the contract keeping her line,” Genkai said with a smirk.
Hiei whipped his head around, narrowing his eyes. Could the psychic read Kouki’s mind like this? When he had not been able to? Something in him boiled, it wasn’t anger, but he couldn’t place what the emotion was. He knew he didn’t want her to be able to do what he hadn’t been able to. He wanted to be the one to break down Kouki’s walls first.
But why? Why did it matter who did it?
“How do you know that?” Hiei asked harshly, unconvinced.
“She looks at you like a dog with its master,” Genkai shrugged like it was obvious. “Can you get her to change into her other form? It would be much easier to converse with her like that.”
Hiei studied the large form of the demon next to him. Kouki tilted her head, one of her massive, pointed ears flicking curiously.
“I have only seen her transform once. She usually comes out of the chip in one form or another. Transforming seems to cause her a great deal of pain,” Hiei said, reaching into his pocket to hold out the golden poker chip.
Kouki shifted, turning her head toward the road and her ears pressed forward. Hiei blinked and reached out mentally, the others had arrived.
“We will work on it,” Genkai said. “The others will be here soon; I suppose we should tell Yukina to get dinner started.”
Hiei swallowed against the desire to ask how she was. Kouki whined beside him, and he knew she could sense a change in him. The change that always happened whenever Yukina was mentioned. He shook his head.
“We’re going inside,” he said.
He looked back down at the chip. He’d been trying to offer her more choices. But he never quite said them out loud. She didn’t need words to understand his meaning anyways. Her vertical pupils flicked up to the temple before with a surge of energy she disappeared, and the chip vibrated in his hand. He frowned at the little piece of plastic. He felt oddly… disappointed.
Brushing off the irritating emotion with a scoff he shoved the chip back into his pocket.
---
It wasn’t until after dinner and everyone was in the tearoom, lounging on the tatami mats, that the chip remade an appearance. Hiei was staring at it as it sat on the low tea table in front of him. Though he wished he could drag his eyes from it, he wasn’t able to, being in the temple and surrounded by so many people made him feel antsy with it out in the open.
“Can you call Kouki from the chip, Hiei?” Kurama asked.
His garnet eyes drifted to meet green and merely frowned down at the object that had fallen under his charge. He knew this would tax her, these next few days or weeks would exhaust her as they treated her like a lab rat. There was part of him, the part that felt unworthy of her trust, that pitied her. It was the part that had felt what had happened to her and had felt sympathy.
Still, this was his mission, this was how he got out of here and got back to the Makai. He threw out his energy, baiting her human side, the warm orange energy. Immediately she rose to meet him, not hesitating for a second. She came to her master’s call naturally. That’s all this was, a contract, as he reminded himself.
A bright burst of light and she was in front of them, once again not a stitch covered her, and she collapsed onto all fours. Her breath rushed out of her, and she was gasping slightly. She was tired. Hiei immediately stood and walked the few short steps to cover her with his cloak.
Her eyes snapped up, honey brown that only lost their panicked fear when she saw it was him. “Master,” she said.
“Oh, new word!” Yusuke clapped.
Hiei groaned, it wasn’t any better than her saying ‘yours’ every time she saw him. He rubbed a hand over his face. “I’m not even going to correct you,” he grunted.
Kurama chuckled across the room. Hiei had the distinct desire to throw a cup at his head or better yet punch him, take a sword to his throat. Genkai stood when she saw the woman and walked over to immediately reach out remove the cloak, obviously having seen the scars. Before anyone could stop her however, Kouki snapped at her outstretched hand and nearly connected with her flesh.
“Feral creature, aren’t you?” she raised a brow.
“She doesn’t like people touching her,” Kuwabara said.
“Except, Shorty,” Yusuke nodded.
“Not yours,” Kouki said slowly and lifted her lips in a snarl.
“Her scars?” Genkai motioned.
Hiei shook his head, “Nothing special. Well, they at least make sense.”
Kurama butted in, “What Hiei means is that they are apparently left over from her quills in demon form.”
Genkai frowned, “She doesn’t heal completely from them.”
“No,” Hiei narrowed his eyes.
He walked away to lean against the wall, realizing they’d be there for a while.
“I’m not sure I can help you if she won’t let me,” Genkai said, sucking on the end of her pipe. “I don’t want to damage her mind.”
“I don’t think you can damage it much more than it is,” he murmured.
---
All Kouki felt was an invasion. The energy wasn’t that of her Master. It was strong, steady, and human. It swirled through her weak defenses with annoyance. It batted away her aggravated attacks.
This felt like the older woman who had approached her. The one who had met them outside the building. Her Master had told her to behave then. Should she let this happen now? Was that his wish?
This mind seemed too strong for her, but it wasn’t aggressive. The sensation of her Master’s thoughts joining them, but resting on the edge, soothed Kouki, his thrumming black and purple energy calmed her agitation. Still could she trust him not to let injury happen to her? She knew he’d treated her better than most of her previous masters, but she didn’t know him well.
She didn’t outright attack, but her defenses pulled tighter, fighting against the woman digging through her skull. The beast inside her redirected the person’s searching. Moving them away from her memories, the soft insides she tried to protect even from herself. She didn’t want those dragged forth. She wanted to forget.
Stop fighting, her Master’s voice commanded.
She snarled, frustrated, angry, but forced her body to relax, forced her mind to accept the intrusion. The old woman’s energy, bright pink and near blinding swirled about, rifling through things that weren’t hers to touch. Yet Kouki accepted it, even as her nails scraped against the tatami beneath her.
Then she yanked it forth, everything that had been buried for so long and Kouki couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think as colors and images flashed to the forefront of her mind.
She had been human, nothing more. A human with a strangely malleable spirit energy that she could never tap into. She volunteered at a shrine, she worked in an office, how long ago was that? Years? Decades? Longer?
She remembered being abducted and the infusion paired with a cruel wide smile. “No!” she screamed, first in head and then deafening into the room as the ghost of the agony from her past rippled through her muscles and bones right to her very soul.
She fell thrashing to the floor. The chip vibrated behind her. She couldn’t breathe, she literally couldn’t inhale. Her throat closed as panic gripped her tight. Malevolence was in that memory, she remembered that creature forcing more and more energy into her until she thought she might explode. Until her energy rocketed from her body and she found solace by being bound to the chip.
The chip. The one thing that could save her now. The one thing, her eyes flew open, and she clawed at her throat with nails sharper than a human should possess as she stared around wildly. Where was her home, why couldn’t she get to it?
Then it stopped, the memories stopped flooding forth, and a gentle tingle settled over her terrified mind as purple and black grew so strong it became an overwhelming haze.
“Breathe,” her Master demanded, his hot hands touched her wrists, pulling them away from her shredded skin. “Idiot woman.”
The oxygen that flowed into her lungs was like sweet life, perfumed with his scent of pine sap and fresh ash. She inhaled, focusing on that scent, focusing on the heat of his skin, and the way he protected her from everything that had been let free.
“C-can’t get back,” she finally said, voice trembling.
He frowned and looked at the chip, “To the chip?”
She nodded. He sighed and narrowed his eyes.
“Try now,” he growled.
She did and she felt him retreat from her head, at first, she felt a rise of anxiety but when the memories didn’t rush back, she breathed out a sigh of relief. Then she focused back on the small plastic circle, the innocuous thing that had become all she knew, all she trusted. The connection was still there, but thinner, and so she urged her body to shift into it and her energy poured inside with little help.
Familiar darkness closed around her and all she cared about was sleeping. She was so tired. So even when her Master tried to call to her later, she didn’t respond, too far deep in her slumber to feel the demand of his energy.
