Fiat Abarth 750 Coupé, 1956, by Viotti. The Turin-based carrozzeria built a few hundred of these Michelotti-designed coupés based on the rear-engined Fiat 600 chassis. A small number (described as a "handful") were tuned by Abarth with the engine enlarged to 747cc allowing a maximum speed of 135kph

So, are affordable subcompact cars just dead in the US and Canada?

I had the thought that if my 20+ year old WRX died and I had to get a new car, maybe I'd get a smaller one and see what that's like, but the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, and Chevy Spark are all defunct, and the Fiat 500, 2-door Mini, and VW Golf all cost more than just getting a new Impreza (or a Corolla, Civic, Mazda 3...) would.

What a difference 50 years make juxtaposition of Volkswagen Polo, 1975 & Volkswagen Polo, 2025. VW's sub compact hatchback started life as the Audi 50 having initially been developed as a new small NSU. It was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone with styling finalised at Audi. The first generation model was only available as a 3 door hatchback. The model has developed through 6 generations and is currently only available as a 5-door hatchback.

The BMW Isetta Spiaggia Custom Roadster was a microcar built under license in Germany from April 1955 to 1962.

The Isetta is an Italian-designed microcar built under license in a number of different countries, including Argentina, Spain, Belgium, France, Brazil, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Because of its egg shape and bubble-like windows, it became known as a bubble car, a name also given to other similar vehicles.

In 1955, the BMW Isetta became the world's first mass-production car to achieve a fuel consumption of 3 L/100 km (94 mpg‑imp; 78 mpg‑US). It was the top-selling single-cylinder car in the world, with 161,728 units sold.

Initially manufactured by the Italian firm Iso SpA, the name Isetta is the Italian diminutive form of Iso, meaning "little Iso".
