Thank you ‘Em from Neurodivergent Wild
“It fills me with frustration and sadness when I hear teachers say ‘I can’t do something different for ONE student’.
I’m sorry- why can’t you?
Surely it’s important that each kid has their individual needs met. And it’s obviously nonsense to think that all kids need the same thing.
To give all kids the exact same thing, to expect them to learn the same way, to think the same, to demonstrate understanding the same, to BE the same- is setting our neurodivergent kids up to fail at school. This isn’t speculation. This is happening widely.
‘But if I do that for him then everyone else will want that too. The rest of the class won’t understand.’
Hmm. The class also doesn’t understand fractions yet and I know that you’re going to spend a whole lot of time teaching that. Let me tell you, ‘everyone is different and has different needs’ will be a much quicker lesson.
‘The behaviour system works well for the majority. We can’t just not use it for these two kids. EVERYONE uses it.’
The behaviour chart rewards neurotypical behaviour. Our kids should not have to go to school everyday and spend all their energy pretending to be neurotypical. It teaches us that we’re not good enough as we are, and that does so much damage. Also, are you happy to stand up and advertise that you are actively ignoring the needs of minority students in your school?
Teachers have such an opportunity to teach their class that difference is good. That individuals all have differences, and it is these differences that make you special. Our neurodivergent kids would be so much happier and comfortable in a classroom where this was the culture. It wouldn’t be hard to do. I know that there are teachers out there getting it done.
When an autistic student is Stimming in class, and a peer asks ‘why are they doing that?’, the simple answer is ‘they concentrate best when their body moves around. Everyone has different brains and different ways of learning. I bet there are more of you who concentrate well when you’re moving!’
It’s not ‘oh, just ignore him.’
It’s not ‘ugh, I know. I’ll tell him to stop.’
It’s simply embracing difference.
It’s talking about it in a positive light.
It’s not that hard.
And it will save lives.
Em 🌈🌻❤️

Holy shit.
I have a little under two months left (more like 1 ½) before I officially will hold a master's degree.
I have about 1 ½ months left before I will be a CF-SLP.
Thank you all for being on this wonderfully weird, stressful, wild ride with me as I have attempted to recenter myself and heal from a bad relationship that ended last January, all while being obnoxiously obsessed with speech-language pathology and gushing over how gorgeous and wonderful Elnor is.
Thank you all for the support and love. I'm not going anywhere, but damn, am I grateful for all of y'all.

i got tagged by @marxism-transgenderism to list 5 songs ive had on repeat lately :3 (and because no one can stop me im gonna say things about them too)
Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups
while i dont love Swoon, i think this song really embodies the concept of the album as a breakdown in musical form. it feels frenetic and the way the bass and drum play together as a heartbeat that insists itself upon you in between the bouts of panic and doubt conveyed in the vocals. also i wish i had brian auberts voice
Duvet by Bôa
i love how rich and bittersweet this song is, its warm like a familiarity that could have been. it feels enveloping yet tired, and while the emotion cuts deep its not overwhelming. that said i wish it were less associated with lain, not out of any failure of lain, but more just so that it could stand on its own and not be oh thats the lain op
Sirens and Satellites by SPC ECO
this is the fancam/amv/etc of all time. to me. also just a song thats very diagnostic of my taste in music, its subsuming in the best way and it leans a lot on the vocals as an instrument. also the very last seconds of it remind me of the floor transition noise in binding of isaac
Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins
as much as billy corgan sucks this song haunts me in just the way its supposed to. it puts me right back to when i used to be that little boy sitting in a car that’s too hot, with what i now know is a mild headache, going with my brother to his slp appointments and feeling almost the same as i do about the song now but with no thoughts as to why
Do the Evolution by Pearl Jam
its wild how this was written for/about y2k and people’s obsession with technology in a way that hasnt changed since. also rewatching the music video reminded me of a phrase of all time: ‘for the dilbert generation’. also the personification of death is transgender
im gonna @anightlikethis1985 @cobain @telekinetic @pakrat1237 @mithli if they wanna do this too :3

My partner is an SLP and she says this is actually a good idea, it's basically what voice therapy is. She likes to ask what her patients' hyperfixations are, and they just answer in their target voice.
(technically you shouldn't punish yourself but wild magic is such a funny consequence lol)
I should run a ttrpg campaign for trans peeps but you're only allowed to play if you voice train the whole time (me included tbh)

“⭐️ New resource: Telling your child they have ADHD ⭐️
I did not mean for this to be 16 pages long, but here we are. Also, hectic hyperfocus was at work when getting this done. I’m trapped at home with sickness so this was a nice distraction from that.
This resource was created for parents to use with their kid when telling them they have an ADHD brain. As we talked about the other day, it’s important that we know about our neurodivergent brain. If we don’t, many of us spend a long time feeling very broken. Our kids deserve to know that they’re not broken.
There is a fair bit of overlap between ADHD and Autism, so some of the slides are the same/similar as the last set on Autism.
This resource has slightly more technical language in it, so parents may have to do a bit of explaining as they go. That’s a good thing because this resource was designed to start conversations. It doesn’t have every bit of ADHD info one could ever need.
If your child is both Autistic and ADHD (AuDHD), you could read through both sets and talk about which traits your child has from each.
Feel free to share this post if you want to.
And let me know what you think of this resource 🫶
Em ☺️🌻🌈

Honestly, I could probably spend hours talking about the Monster Sins AU. I think it's my favorite AU of mine, and definitely my biggest one (even if most of it is still just in my head) - but at the same time, so much stuff left to figure out. It's part of why I haven't written another fic for it yet (the other parts being my Febuwhump stories and me getting distracted by new shiny wips). Like, a major thing in this AU is the fact that while all races are alive and free, they keep to themselves (their own realms or places) and the humans are The race of Britannia with the other races being outcasts. They're also being seen as monsters because they are so distinctly not human - but in what way? What makes a giant a giant except their size? What's Merlin's deal besides scaring the crap out of Dreyfus and Hendrickson when she gets excited? If mages are their own separate race, then is Gowther a doll created by a demon or a mage? What tf is Ban's race even called? And don't get me started on Escanor, a cursed human, what?? Even King and Meliodas, who I have figured out enough to write (through the limited perspective of a human outsider), still have some questions regarding their pasts, and - yeah, a lot of missing puzzle pieces still.
But I also have so many plans for this AU. Pre-One Man's Beast plans, like what happened with Melizabeth and Meliodas leaving the demon realm (years not millennia ago), and the story behind Meliodas' broken horn. But also post-One Man's Beast plans, like a sequel to the events in that fic, but also bringing the Sins to Liones (what happened with Elizabeth? What is the Sins relationship with Liones/the Holy Knights given the nature of the humans' relationship to other races?). Much stuff happening. Serious stuff, silly stuff, lots and lots of whump (I mean, it's my fics, so that's probably a given by now XD).
Ahh, yes! Language and communication is so incredible, isn't it? I mean, communication is one of my passions (hence my choice of studies. Although I'm not actually sure how many of my followers actually know what an SLP is? I didn't really when I started studying tot it XD). The Sins learning Meliodas' language is definitely peak friendship. And the relationship between all of the Sins is so important in this AU. Here, as seen in One Man's Beast, they're literally haunted like monsters. The bond between these seven people, all of different races, all outcasts and deemed monsters, is basically the core of the AU, you know? And that's even without mentioning the Event that happens a few years before One Man's Beast (but shhh, no spoilers for that one). Let's just say it will highlight the importance and the bond of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Anyway. This was not supposed to turn into a Monster Sins AU rant, but would you look at that XD. What can I say, I too am excited about this AU!
Yes! The constant struggle... No, no spoilers. *desire to ramble about a fic and/or AU because I'm so excited about it and wanna share it*. Okay, maybe a little teasing?
Some of the best things in writing are accidents or unintentional. Can't count how many times I've had a little idea plant in my mind and next thing I know it's grown into a whole damn forest - like my Dark Melizabeth AU, one moment I think "this won't even be a proper fic" the next I'm wondering if I can use it for ficwip 5k 2023 or if it'll be too long (jury's still out on that one).
Okay but "almost cooks to death in a snowstorm bc his demon body doesn’t know what tf to do" is such a wild but perfect summary. That's exactly it! And that's so relatable with all the Elizabeths XD! For me it's demons in the box. I love making the demons much more demon, but I also don't have like a standard demon I use. They're similar, yes, but they also have their own unique AU twist. Whenever I write more of an AU or add a sequel or something I always go: *rereads fic* wait, which demon is this?
This was so much fun! Hope you're having an amazing day/night/whatever time it is for you too! I'm- *checks clock* Oh, it's already midnight?? I should probably go to sleep - but ooh the desire to stay up all night just because it's the first time in like 3 weeks I actually can... Anyway. Happy writing to you as well! 💜
For the fic ask game!! 5, 6, and/or 7?
Thank you for the ask 💜
5. What do you wish someone would ask you about [insert fic]? Answer it now!
As a general rule, I wish someone would ask me about [insert fic] period. I love writing and I love talking about my writing. Any and all questions, comments, rants, screaming, whatever is welcome 💜
The first specific thing that did pop up in my head is actually for a wip: The Dusk Before a New Dawn (my Dark Melizabeth AU). I've come up with my own spell for this fic and would LOVE for someone to ask me about the words. But I'm not gonna answer that now. Honestly, it's so silly and stupid it might ruin the mood of the scene if you know what the spell actually says. But:
Once the fic is actually posted, someone please ask me what the spell words in The Dusk Before a New Dawn means!
6. What’s one fact about the universe of [insert fic] that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
Ooh, this is a tough question because a lot of my fics are part of AUs that I definitely wanna build onto and write more stories for, which means some things will get mentioned/explained in future fics.
But one thing I really want to talk more about is Meliodas' communication in my Monster Sins AU. I'm not sure how much I'll get into it in later fics but it's something I've put a lot of thought into (especially after writing the first fic, oops).
In the first (and so far only) fic in the AU, One Man's Beast, the demons' communication is very much swept under the rug because we experience it through the ignorant perspective of not only an outsider but a human one at that. Through the fic Gavin (our human outsider) notes that Meliodas communicates with King through sounds like rumbling and purring. Gavin dismisses this as just an alternative to speaking since Meliodas' is muzzled and can't actually speak, but it's actually a lot more than that.
The average human relies on two kinds of communication, right? Verbal communication (spoken and written language) and non-verbal communication (body language, facial expressions, gestures and whatnot). The demons in this AU also have a third kind of communication consisting of purring, growling, humming and other sounds like that in a system just as complex as the spoken language. Meaning that yes, Meliodas relied heavily on this (so far unnamed) communication because of the muzzle, but at the same time he might have just used that communication even if he could have spoken.
Gavin also notes that King seem to understand what Meliodas tries to say, which he actually does. Now, this kind of communication is specific to the demons, meaning most people wouldn't understand Meliodas like that, but the Seven Deadly Sins do! Obviously, they can't use this communication themselves, and might not understand everything or exactly what Meliodas says like another demon would, but they've known him for years and have learned to interpret this communication. So, he still can and does use it frequently with them. It's a great asset actually, he can alert them to a threat without having to actually speak the words, meaning they could keep the element of the surprise against enemies trying to catch them by surprise.
7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?
As you might be able to tell I have a special fondness for the above mentioned AU. But since most of that is still yet to be written or posted (and I've already rambled about that one in this post), I'll go with another one. The way the demons' bodies work in The Heat of the Storm.
What's funny about this is that it was something that just kind of happened? I couldn't decide which prompt I wanted to use since I wanted to both write about Meliodas having a fever and him being stuck and suffering in a snow storm (natural disaster). So instead I decided to do both and came up with a special way the demons inner temperature is dependent and reactive to the environment's temperature. I love making the demons more demon and less human, and this is one of the ways I'm especially proud of!
Anyway. Here's the list for the ask game, if anyone else wanna send me something :)

The audacity of my current boss has expanded to her trying to gaslight me into thinking I’m a terrible speech language pathologist, so bad and inexperienced that she has no choice but to take away my meager caseload (in general, this clinic doesn’t have enough clients for all the clinicians yet) and I will be relegated to basically assistant and admin duties. I understand that she’s mad that I questioned the shady salary practices and (in a fit of temper because of the chaos around here) I repeated a story that her best friend told everyone about boss’s expensive spending habits, but this is beyond the pale. I literally had 3 parents tell me today that they were happy with progress, they liked me for their child better than one of the other SLPS, etc. at this point, I’m mainly lingering around because I’m still learning from one of the other clinicians, and this location is unique (I’m in Japan, where it’s not easy to find SLP jobs if you are not Japanese speaking). But it’s only a matter of time guys I’m sure before I get tired of all this.
Anyhow, does anyone have opinions about New Delhi, India? I saw a job opening that looked interesting enough to try to interview with, if nothing else but for the chance to talk to the people, but I’m not wild about what I’ve heard about the city in terms of pollution, weather, and safety concerns. I’m sure from a cultural standpoint it would be great to visit, but for living… Certainly it would be the polar opposite of my current location lol.
