KING RELD, Letters Home | Handmade dress | The dress was made for the Spirit Fashion Show put on by CMU students in 2018. It was part of a collection of pieces called Crossing and illuminated themes of the many immigration crises. This dress in particular is called Letters Home and shows a connection to the “homeland”. It was just in use for a film in collaboration with The Spectacular House and Slowdanger, which I thought made it pretty special. If you don’t like that it looks like it has a history, I can refurbish it. I think it makes it more valuable that it has been touched by many hands.

This project was made in Unity. Everything looks like 2D squares. There’s text on the ceiling and it’s occurring to me that this is VR. Everything looks really familiar to real life, but feels virtual because you can only see squares.

Embodied Virtual Reality by Anna Henson & slowdanger

HTC Vive can see people outside the headset. There is a split screen image, one side is the player view and the other is the play area where two players in non-VR appear in-headset. Their body mass is represented with a large grey cloud and their movements are traced with red trails. The in-game room has no lights.

So the two non-VR headset players hold the controllers while the headset player is in the dark and can see the traces of the other players. One controller player creates a light vortex by swirling the controller horizontally, the other controller helps the headset walk through.

There is a scene in here where the player is in a Costco, where there are high-stacked palettes and boxes. He picks up an avocado that tells him its nutritional facts and suddenly, from near to far, the shelved fade away. It provided this niche feeling that often comes to my mind. Like in The Matrix when everything zooms away, or Assassins Creed, when the Animus loads up.

This one brought a tear to my eye. VR Journalism putting you in helpless situations where you must live through the traumatic experience of others. A project where a man has a seizure beside you and a project where a plaza is blown up. The only comparison I can make is to horror VR games where you are forced to move through uncomfortable environments. This puts players into real environments and real scenarios creating real emotion.

There are some times you just want to dance. if you are me, that just happens to be about 80% of the time. I love moving my body and rocking out letting loose and being free. I had always wanted to be a dancer when I was a kid but maybe I started late, maybe I was too pudgy, or maybe the scene with those girls in that snobby class was just NOT ME.

AHEM, I digress. The point is, I love dancing and I have a hard time finding places in Pittsburgh where I can take a dance class. Not to say they aren't out there, they are! It is just overwhelming to try to look up exactly when, where, what it is all about. I wanted one place that had it all on a calendar.

Enter Jessica Anne Marino who runs JamDancer online. A website that brought a newsletter right to my email box, showing me exactly where I can go to rock my body out. We chat about her dance background, schooling, what being a professional dancer does to your body and mental health, and accessibility for kids and adults to be able to dance freely and often!

Big shout outs to Julie Erickson, Slowdanger, and also Katie Mcguire Gaines who is running Minding the Gap which offers mental health support group for dancers.
