This song (which I view more as a poem with an instrumental accompaniment tbh) has been on my mind a lot these past few months – and even longer. And as it's the cultural holiday today, it seems fitting to post it. {Youtube link}
Generals by Tomaž Pengov | Generali
Hey, merchants of fiery plague, | Hej, trgovci z ognjeno kugo, you keep the gates of history, | vi ste vratarji zgodovine, you are the monarchs of our time | monarhi našega časa and sowers of eternal silence. | in sejalci večne tišine.
You hold too much in your hands, | Preveč držite v svojih rokah, if only you didn't wave them, | da ne bi vsaka vaša kretnja, weaving black shrouds for the people, | črnih prtov ljudstvu tkala, whose every hope you're selling to hell. | in vsako upanje v pekel prodala.
Between vivid dreams of joyful strides, | Med žive sanje srečnih korakov, between desire and its existence, | med željo in njeno resničnost, you cast your stony shadow, | pada vaša trda senca, crippling it all into stillness. | da vse pohabi v nepremičnost.
cont. ↓
Hey, generals, from behind your shades, | Hej, generali s temnimi očali, look at your starving peoples, | poglejte svoja lačna ljudstva, everybody knows what you've done, | vsi vedo, kaj ste storili, it's written in the earth what you've betrayed. | in v zemlji piše, kaj ste izdali.
You claim a certain past, | Lastite si neko preteklost, you stomp over whatever you find foreign, | teptate vse, kar vam je tuje, you deny worlds not your own | zanikate tuje svetove, and replace every day one old god or another. | in vsak dan menjate stare bogove.
Your laughter brings tears beyond count. | Vaš smeh so solze neštetih. Among the frescoes of unknown faces, | Med freske neznanih obrazov, you write down your commands | pišete svoja povelja, with flags of defeat as your gowns. | in se oblačite v zastave porazov.
You are the judges of your time, | Vi ste sodniki svojega časa, who else but time can judge you, | kdo drug kot čas lahko vam sodi, only the wounded lives of many, | le ranjena življenja mnogih, who are locked in your freedom. | ki so zaklenjena v vaši svobodi.

from The Purpose of a Cloak (1968).
9 3
I’m placed in safe hands. I want to be hungry so that this ends. On the horizon, a black dog swims as if there were water, but there’s no water. It chews my hand, but it doesn’t hurt. The black dog is quite mellow. I’m artificially creating fear. Fear is a work of art. I’m vicious. I pour a pail of water over my head. All this has no taste, the colors have their locus, their origins. They populate my body like ether.
III. Sometimes cobwebs are on words. Sometimes filaments, sometimes salt. Now there’s bark and knots and a screeching knife. I always go clothed here, not naked. I imagine that I know how much it can puff in my head. I really have no idea. Sometimes I throw the knife into the veil so that I can get it back. Under the skin is a second skin, under the second skin is a third skin. I see the end of the street. I can count everything: two candelabra. I see a grid made from the lattice of Sol LeWitt.
IV. The curves drive me to sleep, a child dies. On the altar there’s eggnog, I’ll stay, I’ll stop. God, grant me rest, in the cave, in the rain.

One of my goals for 2023 was to read poetry in translation from as many different languages and cultures as possible. By year's end, I had read poetry translated from Akkadian, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Old English, Old Norse, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, and Swedish. I'm pretty pleased, but I can still do better (as you'll note, the list is tilted heavily toward Indo-European languages), so I'm aiming to expand my horizons further in 2024.

Rumi Was Vegan - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast
Says Vegan Rumi: "I have existence and I value it so much, so have all the beings on earth and they too, try to preserve it. Then, how can I kill even the tiniest creature just to satiate my palate? Even a seemingly lifeless stone has a degree of consciousness; respect it. To me, even milk is forbidden. Look at all animals as you look at humans. If we consume an animal, its blood and gore will make us act like a slaughterer. We began as mineral. We emerged into plant life, and into the animal state, and then into being human, and always we have forgotten our former states, except in early Spring when we slightly recall being green again." (Rumi, the King of the Sufi Poet-Mystics and often quoted by Sant Mat Masters)
It's quite significant finding these vegan verses of Jalalaldin Rumi, as many would assume or presume Rumi would have followed the more conventional mainstream halal (similar to kosher) diet. And Rumi is not the only example within Sufism of saints advocating vegan or vegetarian values. In the past I've shared podcasts regarding Rabia of Basra, Bawa Muhaiyaddeen, and other Sufi mystics. There's even vegan sayings of Jesus preserved in Sufi circles. But knowledge of these things soon gets forgotten and lost in various traditions of world religions. ("The god of time [illusion] has put a cover over the teachings of Saints and thus concealed them from humanity." - Sar Bachan Poetry of Swami Ji Maharaj)
And not many dairy cows are living blissful happy lives roaming free in the Slovenian countryside or in some idyllic sunny pasture as some might also assume (or would prefer to imagine in order to rationalize defending old customs), but rather end up at the very same slaughterhouses as other factory-farmed animals killed for their meat... when the milk runs dry, when all is said and done. Thus, we must not drink from the tap of illusion (maya) but do the research, become informed by the science pertaining to diet-related diseases, and evolve in our thinking, taking the high road, going in the direction of compassion for all life, both human and animal! (Peace Be To All)

Jean Vodaine (1921—2006), born Vladimir Kavčič, was a Franco-Slovenian poet, writer, typographer and painter.
He was born on in Volče, Slovenia. From the second half of the 19th century, Slovenia lands experienced quite intense emigration. Some of the Slovenian emigrants ended up in France, most of them in Lorraine, where they preserved their cultural life through societies. Writers were also among the emigrants, most significantly Vodaine.
In a Lorraine village, he founded the international literary magazine Dire, which was famous for its luxurious typographical design. Vodaine was also a painter and a poet, as well as a prominent translator of Slovenian poetry. Along with the painter Veno Pilon, he compiled a short anthology of translated Slovene poetry, but they did not manage to realize their idea of a comprehensive anthology. (from wiki)

a fun thing about writing undertale poetry in slovenian is that the word for love (ljubezen) is Not inherently related to LV, but i still can use it interchangably as a shorthand for that
which means im able to make 'sharing love' a bad thing within the text (Angel of death sharing their love or 'give them love or freedom' for example) without it being a too-on-the-nose reference to the game
#undertale#ive also learnr that theres actually people out there who will read that stuff which is pretty exciting#got a comment that called one of them 'raw and wonderful'#thank you ao3 user boneless_kiwis

Kaja Draksler / Susana Santos Silva — Grow (Intakt)
Grow by KAJA DRAKSLER – SUSANA SANTOS SILVA
Sometimes you have to wander in order to do what you want to do. Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler and Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva have both gone a long way, aesthetically and geographically, from their initial, homegrown classical training. Draksler is now based in Copenhagen, where she toggles between participation in ensembles that incorporate poetry and jazz into rigorously conceived structures, and total improvisation with such highly individual players as Terrie Ex and John Butcher. Silva resides in Stockholm, where she works frequently with jazz bassist Torbjörn Zetterberg and pursues a deepening investigation into electronic and electro-acoustic music. But their duo is not the product of peregrination, nor concerned with simple opposing relationships. Grow is what happens when two purposefully flexible players bring a full range of options and abilities to the task of making music in the moment.
The two women have made one previous album, This Love, that included pieces written by each, and they are both part of Hearth, a quartet with saxophonists Ada Rave and Mette Rasmussen. But Grow is a concert recording made at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2021. While it is split into four parts, they comprise an unbroken thread of invention realized in continuous performance. Draksler opens with a weave of questing right-hand keyboard phrases, which clash tonally but mesh rhythmically with syncopated prepared piano figures. Silva soon launches a series of dark growls and long, gritty cries, and as she stretches out, the pianist tests her options, proposing first long sweeps up and down the keyboard, and then intricate, changing progressions.
As the music evolves, both players seem to be listening for two sets of options — ones that enhance what the other is doing, and ones that will keep the music evolving. And they aren’t just listening to each other, but also figuring out what to add or subtract from their own playing. At some points, Draksler sounds like two different players at once, simultaneously manipulating glassy swells of resonance and an undercurrent of agitated chatter. At others, they collapse into one, such as an episode when the trumpet’s pops and the piano’s clatter sound an overheard huddle between the items on a Foley artist’s table of tools. The unusual sonorities never sound like mere novelties. Rather, they are expressions of a collective imagination, unhindered by convention or ego, but highly purposeful and satisfyingly on target.
