Two toed sloths and three toed sloths are each others closest relatives, so it’s a little confusing, but they separated 28 million years ago, you know all the extinct giant ground sloths? The two types of modern sloth are basically two different branches of ground sloth that went up in the trees and survived the extinctions that killed all their relatives, some Caribbean sloths also went in the trees independently but went extinct anyway

Testing out some color ideas for a future project – I’ve been wanting to try and do one of those very limited, punchy color schemes, like you sometimes see in old children’s book illustrations. I’m not sure I have the aesthetic restraint for it! I keep wanting to layer for more naturalistic colors :p it’s fun to play around with, though, and I’m sure I’ll hit a balance I like eventually.

Just learned about something very very cool that I’m shocked I didn’t know about before- Paleoburrows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are giant tunnels, mostly found in Brazil. Over 1,500 of them are documented.
It was originally assumed that they were dug by indigenous people, and many of them were repurposed into human shelters at some point, but we now believe they were built by prehistoric megafauna.
We know this because of distinct claw marks along the walls of the caverns, unlike anything humans have produced.
Tumblr media
They come in a variety of sizes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The smaller ones were probably dug by large armadillos, such as Holmesina.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The larger could have been dug by giant ground sloths like Glossotherium.

Thank you for reading, I just thought this was cool and wanted to share.

Personally I love all different Kurts. No such thing as a bad Kurt when Kurt is Kurt to begin with.

horse sleeping peacefully in a brown paddock this horse is sleeping so peacefully in fact that it has its sweet chin tucked against its knee while the ground is brown it is not mud but pine straw or some similar substance if you look upward however you can see that this horse rests beneath fine verdancy as many trees shade its peaceful home with branches heavily laden with many leaves this image has a warm and pleasant feeling to it inviting the viewer to enjoy a moment of peaceful rest and communion of nature

Bitey-face is a dog game you’ve probably seen and may love: lots of loud open-mouthed posturing and maybe some wrassling. I now invite you join me in experiencing bitey-face a la sloth bears. I grabbed these photos yesterday at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and lost my shit laughing when I saw how they’d turned out. (Open them fullscreen and zoom in on their facial expressions, it’s so worth it.)

I just cannot get over the excessively extra lips.
The fun thing about watching these two play was the clear use of the log to diffuse tension / reduce physical contact. They purposefully set up on either side of it to posture at each other, and then would circle around and wrestle for a bit, before going right back to their original spots.
Shameless plug, I’ll be posting these and a bunch more on my insta.

Party like a ground sloth, because it’s Fossil Friday! This image, snapped circa 1957 depicts giant sloths on display in the Museum. During the Pleistocene, a wide array of ground sloths lumbered across North and South America. Some, like the island-dwelling Megalocnus rodens, evolved to be long-distance swimmers. Others, like the mighty Megatherium, were among the largest land mammals to ever live. The biggest ground sloths could have weighed up to 8,800 lbs (4,000 kg)—the size of an elephant! Most of these mammals died out at the end of the Pleistocene. There is also evidence that ground sloths and early humans used the same caves, but not necessarily at the same time.
See giant ground sloths and more on the Museum's fourth floor! We're open daily from 10 am–5 pm. Plan your visit.
