(For context for the majority of my followers who are not obsessed with a D&D live play from over five years ago, please note that they finessed the usual Paladin Plate Mail mechanic for an urban fantasy by upping Ricky's natural AC and then just making him so attractive that he gets a negative modifier to attempts at stealth because if anyone half catches a glimpse of him they're likely to want to see more.

And then, because he never knows what to say to Esther, he texts her lots of selfies to show her what he's up to instead, and she has to pretend this is not torture because she cannot encourage him. But he is so pretty y'all.)

Ricky doesn't send a selfie. Esther wonders what one Ricky Matsui would think was an appropriate outfit for a pigeon wedding. No she doesn't, she isn't going to wonder that. Nope, no way, not even a little bit. Maybe Sofia would take some pictures? Sofia seems like the type who might take some pictures, and also the type who might share them afterward? Esther drops her face in her hands. She used to be so much better at this whole Not Thinking thing, what the fuck is wrong with her. She swallows. She knows exactly what's wrong with her. That is, in fact, part of the problem. She's going to have to visit the Park sooner than usual.

This was really tough. Between medical worries eating my brain and my incredibly stupid decision to do a montage chapter, I've been stuck in the same place for MONTHS, and almost all of my 'writing' has been 'deleting things' or 'shoving bits around hoping they'll fit.'

...so I wrote six new lines, which are now the last ones.

Down in the engineering lab, Samantha looked up at the silvery face of EDI’s new platform. “Were you singing?” “...I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you.” “You didn’t,” Sam assured. Ness, sitting astride a packing crate and trying to get the latch undone, added, “I know that one! Keep going. But get this latch for me, too?” Samantha smiled and went back to work, setting up her marvelous new equipment. A miniature quantum comms lab started taking shape around her — and when EDI switched to a song she knew, she started singing, too.

context: we r setting the scene for tragic toxic yuri because i genuinely love pain and suffering, so it's Adana x (eventual) DJ SH. I'd like to do third person because I want to be able to coherently swap between both ladies' viewpoints throughout, but for now the second person monster has me in its grip for this draft. I'm hoping to cover a lot of little moments building up to The Big Decision, then a couple more little moments, and then have the nightfall ritual scene where everything is awful. we'll see how it goes! will be pretty big for a oneshot, to be sure.

Should They Raise a Hand Against You (Cut It Off)

You had found Shadowheart’s faith admirable, once. When you’d known little of Shar’s teachings before, shrouded in secrecy as the goddess of night and trickery demanded, Shadowheart had been a devoted acolyte and an eager teacher; every sermon from her mouth had sounded beautiful. It was difficult to reconcile the Cult of the Nightsinger whose worship was banned in most civilized places with the Shadowheart you knew; the Shadowheart who loved night orchids and couldn’t swim, who feared wolves but cooed over every animal you (perhaps unwisely) added to your camp’s number. The Shadowheart who looked you in the eyes with complete, straight-faced sincerity as she said sweet nothings about singing your praises or you giving her butterflies.

You could not reconcile the two.

Hearing Shadowheart’s fervor and devotion, it was easy to wonder if perhaps the Dark Lady’s reputation was unearned. There was comfort in the darkness. In a goddess who embraced all the world’s most downtrodden, for she would embrace all things in the end. You could see the beauty Shadowheart found in her worship for yourself. But then Shadowheart would make glib references to the penance she’d owe for saving refugee children, or to torture techniques and the cruelty of her ‘Mother’ and teachers in passing, all as if such things were unremarkable and not worth dwelling upon, and you would wonder.

Surely Shadowheart could not be who she was, and so devoted to such a mistress. Surely you must be mistaken, or she was. It kept you up at night, wondering when the day would come that you would have your answer.

That day did not come when Shadowheart nearly murdered Lae’zel in the night. Truly, considering all that Shadowheart had been through, it was something of a miracle she hadn’t attempted to murder her sooner.

And while Shadowheart had snapped and snarled while she pinned your githyanki companion down and held a knife to her throat, she’d… hesitated. Long enough for you to reach her. Long enough for you to see the fear and desperation shining in her eyes, how she so very clearly hadn’t wanted it to come to this; that she simply saw no other way forward where she survived. She had feared a knife in her back, so she’d struck first to protect herself. And perhaps you should have known then, when it was clear as day that it was the only way Shadowheart knew how to protect herself, to strike first, and so quickly, so viciously, that whatever threat would not dare raise a word or hand against her again.

But you hadn’t. You had talked her down with soft words and soft touches, coaxed the knife from her grip and helped her to her feet so she could offer Lae’zel a hand in reconciliation.

You should have known better, then. That you would not always be able to talk her from the precipice. But you hadn’t.
