watching a therapist play Slay The Princess (Euro Brady) and I love how he;
overanalysed the Cheated so much he trusted the Razor blindly
started to break down some good psychology stuff on four of the Voices - right before all of the other Voices got dragged into it (to his instantaneous regret and comedic dread)
practically becomes canon Long Quiet as he starts pleading with the Narrator to take him over again and find a way to shut all the Voices up

Voice of the Opportunist wants to come out on top always, craves power, and flatters those he thinks are more powerful, because he's afraid of getting hurt but especially being powerless. So much that he cannot trust anybody else.
On the other hand, he craves affection. He wants happiness. He wants approval from the other Voices. He's unable to say or allow it because of his fear to show any weakness.
(It doesn't say good things about the Long Quiet's mental state.)
When the Long Quiet's / TLQ not there in The Princess and the Dragon to balance the Voices in the body, Opportunist gets worse. He's ready to kill the Long Quiet along the Princess to become the new leader.*
TLQ 's feelings are somehow always present through the Voices. And part of his feelings when he's with the Princess are about escaping from her, seeing her as an danger- and being interested in her as a person, supporting her when the Voices ignore her while they argue internally, etc. His feelings are in conflict with each other.
My interpretation is that like with many of the other routes, his internal conflict becomes externalized. The Princess and the Dragon leads this to its logical conclusion by literally separating TLQ from his body and making him see the conflict from the outside.
The part obsessed with self-preservation + power is going into overdrive since he's disconnected from his body. Part of him is terrified of these positive feelings for her because it makes him even more vulnerable. Part of him craves it - the Princess showed it to him first even after all he did. She forgives him after he hurt her twice. She means it. She wants to stay with him.
He wants this.
Opportunist's actions make sense as TLQ's fear of being weak bleeding through. He wants this connection, he wants affection so much that it scares him. So he overcorrects and tries to kill these feelings.
Which only ends in hurting himself alongside her.
It's not only that part of him doesn't want to hurt her and feels compassion. Attacking this part hurts him as a whole = TLQ because it's dismissing and hating a part of himself.
*(IF Opportunist had managed the very unlikely scenario of killing him, it probably would've destroyed him, the other Voices, and the Shifting Mound by extension by destroying the Construct.)
Edit: This chapter is also about TLQ's continuous internal conflict between loving the Princess and his fear of getting hurt by her. It's even in the Opportunist, although heavily skewed.

Absolutely devastating realizations about Happy Ever After
PRISTINE CUT SPOILERS:
I was wondering why in Happy Ever After the table was so long and kept us so far from the Princess, and I realized that Smitten was probably terrified that we would try to hurt her, cus even if we didnā€™t want to, the thought of the Narrator taking control and forcing us to attack her OR force her to kill us in self defense would compromise both of our ā€œhappinessā€.
But itā€™s only when the facade ends and we let her out of the cabin that weā€™re able to actually share a dance with her. A real connection.
Itā€™s so twisted and sad that Smitten, in his desire to keep the Princess safe and happy, actually prevents us from connecting with her in the way actual couples do. Heā€™s afraid of himself, of failing her, and of hurting her, but in trying to protect her he pushes her away from him emotionally. The cabin isnā€™t just to protect her, itā€™s to protect himself.

slay the princess pristine cut spoilers etc
i was brainstorming with buddies on discord and started thinking about damsel ch3 having the blade with her, already pointed at her heart, then just started thinking about the blade as a tool.
i think about the blade so much. a cold reminder of your mission in this world, something so tiny that represents a huge wall between you, your ability to be willing to understand others, to understand yourself.
if you bring it with you you've chosen to take a defensive stance against something and someone you don't understand, but it's so comforting, it gives you options, it gives you control over any situation given you don't underestimate the person standing in front of you. even when you don't want it, when you think you don't need it, it will come back to you. a nagging feeling. you're given the option to be distrustful even when you don't literally have it in you, it's what you've been taught is safety, it hangs over your head and dangles above your heart at all times.
and in damsel ch3 it goes from a tool given weight by the role you're supposed to play, to the same thing but looming over her this time. the expectations of what you're supposed to want and what's best for the people around you and what keeps you grounded, the narrator sang the same tune before, and he hurt her and he hurt you. he hurt himself and his humanity in the process. and now he's taken the backseat and is forced to see how messed up that is by having the smitten be the one pulling the strings of the construct, someone with a perspective so different, but one that ends up hurting everyone all the same, even if he doesn't intend it to do so.
everyone is forced to look at themselves in the mirror.
carrying that blade is suffocating for anyone.
and now im thinking about mr. "let's throw it out the window" contrarian, the only voice you can bring to her heart along with the hero, someone that refused to engage with the narrative and someone that is well aware that his perspective is annoying and unneeded for its purposes.
and then he meets the whole of her, and she tells him about how his courage is beautiful. he's the part of the long quiet that knowingly or not, is more willing to throw aside any kind of logic in order to understand a situation in a way the rest don't want to, and he's *now* realizing that his existence is an important aspect to have.

Slay the Princes: Pristine Cut Spoilers
(Please go check it out as soon as you can. It's so good)
Okay. I'm just gonna say off the bat that I love all the new stuff that the pristine cut added. It was such a nice surprise to see more stuff get added to this game. Now, allow me to go off a bit about the canon look of the long quiet.
Tumblr media
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAUSGWUSVSIWFSIWFSUWGQYEUIWCWIWGWUWH!!!!!!
I LOVE THIS. Sorry, but seeing the long quiet look even more monstrous than I imagined him?! Amazing. I'm so happy that he looks so creepy. And the way everything behind him is just shadows?! Perfect. I love this so much.
Seeing that he looks like this also makes me love the love story of the princess and the long quiet even more. The fact that the long quiet looks like this terrifying beast while the princess looks like a delicate princess. I love it. I don't know why it appeals to me so much, but it just does. Couldn't be more happy about this.

Happily Ever After and the Cage really are twin Chapters.
Both princesses find themselves trapped in the cabin because of the actions of the slayer.
Both princesses find any agency left taken from them because they believe they don't have any because of the Slayer's actions. Happily Ever After is afraid of upsetting the Slayer and goes along with whatever Smitten says. The Cage thinks she's just a body, a head, whom things happen to, and doesn't think she can, should stop hurting the Slayer.
Both can end trapped for 'eternity' by the Slayer leaving them there.
Voice of the Smitten tries to make us and the Princess happy, accidentally scaring her because she has no power. Voice of the Skeptic thinks it a huge puzzle and the Princess is on his quest.
Both of them force their perception and interests onto the situation, not considering what the Princesses actually feel or want. By their actions and lack of consideration, they also trap themselves / the Slayer.
Voice of the Smitten and Voice of the Skeptic really are twin Voices.
