- Day 18: Favourite World

It’s been nearly three months and Fai’s just about ready to do something drastic. Or break down. 

One or the other, definitely.

Or at least, that’s what Kurogane thinks as he watches the shaky, twitchy way the mage sharpens his arrows and his daggers, polishes his bow and then his armour. Not being able to talk to anyone must really be driving him up the wall. And honestly, Kurogane gets it, for all that he enjoys his peace and quiet, gets that it’s not for everyone. Especially when one is used to talking and talking and talking, spinning tales and laughing out loud and socialising.

And Fai has been able to do none of it since they landed in this war-torn country. 

Well, mostly none of it.

The mage talks to himself (or maybe to Kurogane, but it’s never anything the ninja can understand, despite the handful of words he’s managed to pick up through trial and error), usually when they’re in their living quarters (they’ve received a tent of their own upon joining), or more rarely, when they’re out walking or training and it’s just the two of them with little to no risk of anyone else hearing. Fai never makes a sound when someone else is around.

Honestly, Kurogane feels kind of sorry for the man, though he doesn't miss the constant teasing. (He does miss the nicknames, maybe, but he'll be damned twice over before he'd ever admit to it.)

Fai sighs, loud and frustrated, and shoves his shoulder guards (shiny now) to the foot of the bed. He mutters something under his breath, then shakes his head. Mutters some more. 

Kurogane looks at him, eyebrow raised just a bit. "What is it, mage?"

Fai lifts his gaze at that, meets Kurogane's own (and there's another thing Kurogane will never admit to missing, the sky-blue shade of the mage's eyes, now black as night, like Kurogane's own also currently are). He says something, voice low, consonants running together in his frustration. 

How lonely must it be, to not be able to communicate at all? When all you have is vague gestures and the pain in your eyes you can't do anything to hide? 

Kurogane shakes his head, points at his own ear, and shakes his head again. 

And Fai just. Deflates, head hanging low, blond hair hiding his face from view. Yeah, it's definitely lonely, Kurogane decides. 

He breathes in deep and lets it out in a steady exhale, before he stands up and goes to sit next to Fai on the mage's bunk. Wraps his arm around Fai's shoulders just in time to feel them shudder. "This isn't like you," he says in the softest voice he can manage. "The kids'll show up soon, and we'll leave this place. Hang on until then." Kurogane knows Fai can't understand him, but he hopes at least the tone of it is soothing enough for the man's frayed nerves.

And it seems to work.

Fai slumps against his shoulder, a quiet mumble leaving his lips that sounds tinged with tired gratitude. 

He's asleep before Kurogane knows it. 

It takes Kurogane a while to follow.

(And if the next night, Fai quietly crawls into Kurogane's bunk and curls up against his back, forehead pressed to Kurogane's spine, it's not like Kurogane's going to complain. Not when they both wake up tangled together and better rested than they have been since they've landed in this world.)

Hi, can I offer you this option: Leo/Yuichi Usagi ( #leosagi)? (You can ignore it, I just wanted to tell you about him, maybe you'll like this pair of swordsmen in blue clothes:) In all versions of the Ninja Turtles, there was a crossover with this rabbit, and in all Leo and Usagi got along very well and respected each other And the 18-year-old version of Mutant Turtles is ideal for adapting Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles (Cute dynamics of gay idiots)

They have a lot in common: from an ancient Japanese clan, gays, swordsmen in blue clothes, magnets for problems, and were the cause of the end of the world at least 1 time

How many books have you read so far?

126; fewer than I wanted to have read but there’s a lot of extenuating circumstances and reading must take a back seat to everything else. A few have been re-reads like Dance of Thieves, Red White & Royal Blue, the first three books of An Ember in the Ashes, and I will get to re-reading We Hunt the Flame in the next few weeks. 

What genres have you read?

A decent mix, I think. It’s still somehow dominated by fantasy and YA (or YA fantasy), but I’ve gotten in quite a few other genres like contemporary/ adult literary fiction, historical fiction, romance, sci-fi, classics, and some nonfiction, poetry, short stories, and graphic novels.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year:

I’m very excited for A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger, Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson, Hypnosis is for Hacks by Tamara Berry, and The Winners by Fredrik Backman - the intended release date is unclear but it looks like it should be out in English in November/ December but might be pushed to next year. (On that note, I am still waiting for The Winds of Winter and The Thorn of Emberlain.)

Biggest disappointment:

Ace by Angela Chen was well put together but nothing earth-shattering or even that affirming for me. I keep myself sheltered from discrimination so I don’t face the stuff that people in the stories related faced, nor is it like I’ve never heard of asexuality before. 

In terms of books I think were just bad, Coyote America by Dan Flores was a flop; it looked like it might be pretty informative and some parts of it were, but there were so many assumptions and presumptions, as well as poor argumentation, that it threw everything else the author was claiming into question. Brideshead Revisited and A Handful of Dust, both by Evelyn Waugh were also big disappointments, out of all the classics I’ve read so far this year they were both boring, stale duds in which nothing interesting happened at all and the narrative voice was even more boring and grating. 

Biggest surprise:

Um, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I thought it would be iffy but it was... it flowed well and highlighted the differences between the women and had such emotional depth and also drew so much attention to patriarchal religious structures and patriarchy in general. 

Favorite new author (debut or new to you):

Ooh, I’ve read quite a few debut novels - mostly middle grade since I’ve been reading a lot of middle grade since my own novel project falls somewhere between middle grade and YA and I want to study the story types and narrative styles and I like how they’re written much more clearly than YA and adult books and yet typically have great emotional depth. So for most notable debut authors I liked Rebecca Mahoney and Nora Shalaway Carpenter. In new to me authors, Rachel Maddow, Tillie Walden, and Natuso Kirino all have other books that I’m now interested in checking out. Actually I have one of Tillie Walden’s other books next to me right now.

Underrated gems:

I’m going to say Spindle’s End, The Goddess Chronicle, The Valley and the Flood, Cures for Heartbreak, the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones, Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland, Black Flamingo by Dean Atta, The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham (a classic horror/ sci-fi novel), and The Thirty Names of Night by Zeyn Joukhadar

Newest fictional crush:

Was gonna say “don’t have any” but one could say that I love Marko in Saga (they draw him with such a strong jawline and he wears armor and has beautiful ram horns; bearded Marko was peak Marko) and Eleanor Wilde in Tamara Berry’s Eleanor Wilde mystery series might count.

Newest favorite characters:

the crew in Saga and Ashby in The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet stick out but really, I loved a lot of characters this year.

Book that made you cry:

Jumping Off Swings by Jo Knowles, Love & Olives by Jenna Evans Welch, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid leap to mind

How are you doing with your year’s goals?

Well I didn’t make any official goals aside from my overall reading goal of 200 books, which I’m doing well on. I might up it to 250 but I’m not sure how demanding fall semester is going to be yet. Aside from that I just have vague goals to push my boundaries and read as diversely as possible - not just with things like #ownvoices books but in genre, all the different categories, as well. That’s going pretty well.

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

SO MANY. I can’t give a list because there is no way to keep it concise.

Note: Ambiguous to which part of TRC this is because reasons but it’s towards the latter half of the series.

A lanky form with a height surpassing Zoro’s own plopped down on the railing beside where Zoro was training. Rust-colored eyes watched him a few moments before looking to the sky. Zoro could see the contemplation on the older man’s face. The age difference between them was no more than a few years and yet the ninja looked so much more tired than Zoro did.

“Need somethin’?” The ex-pirate hunter asked with a grunt. His muscles ached from the training. They suffered from injuries that were still healing but he didn’t have time to deal with such nonsense. He had to be sure that he was ready for whenever the spirit of combat called.

“You should take a break and go spend time with your family.” Came the deep reply. The very notion made Zoro pause and look at the other swordsman. His expression pinched the slightest bit as he blinked at the man, trying to discover the sudden line of conversation.

“Need ta finish this first.” 

“The path to be the best is lonely and all-consuming if you don’t focus on what you have right in front of you.” Kurogane brought his gaze back to Zoro and looked him in the eye. The man crossed his arms and sat on the railing, unbothered by the possibility of falling in the water. “Having all that power won’t bring back what you lost. I figured that out the hard way.”

“No, but it’ll let me keep what I got.” the pirate replied shortly.

“True. But you got to focus on what’s right in front of you too.” Kurogane motioned his head over to where his friends were talking and sharing drinks with the Straw Hats. It was obvious that Robin was entranced by the adorable magical rabbit-like creature that traveled with Kurogane’s group. The others laughed and played together while Fai stood off to the sidelines, one of his fake smiles plastered upon his face as he protectively watched over the group.

Zoro blinked and put down the weights in his hands. He straightened up and gazed down at his crew and their friends playing on the lawn. It brightened his heart to see them all so happy. Things had been so hard lately. They had seen a lot of terrible things in the world and it made him sick to think about them. But he also found it hard to think about those things when watching his nakama enjoying themselves.

There was a soft stabbing pain in his chest. Zoro’s heart ached the slightest bit despite the joy he was feeling. He was struggling with the emotional sensations rising up in him.

“Listen, kid.” Kurogane’s voice rumbled in his ear. “I know how hard it is to fit into a group that chipper but the strain on your patience is worth it. I guarantee that gaggle of idiots you got there actually want to spend time with you. I advise you do it. You never know when the world and all you believed in is going to crumble around you. So take a rest and go spend time with your friends.”

Memories of almost losing Luffy and the others several times over flashed in Zoro’s mind. The very thought of those times made the swordsman feel sick to his stomach. He couldn’t imagine losing a single one of his nakama.

“Thanks.” The gratitude came out flat but Kurogane could see the true emotion in the younger swordsman’s eye. The pirate turned from him and grabbed a nearby towel. He watched the other man head down to the others and immediately get tackled by the pirate crew’s cheery captain.

Kurogane shook his head but his lips quirked the slightest bit as he watched the commotion below. Through all the chaos, crystal blue eyes met his gaze. A sweet sincere smile on a pale and tired face made his heart race. He knew they could both see just how much the pirate crew loved their swordsman as the young man was immediately drawn into their idiot games.

The sensation of teaching a fruitful lesson lightened a bit of the weight in Kurogane’s heart and he stood to join his magician on the sidelines.

How powerful is Mika in general

Mika's powers are a complicated matter, because I was figuring it out as I went through the seasons, so...

In the beginning, Mika had power over water. That was before it was revealed that Nya has elemental power of water. Then I made them be like Lloyd, in terms that... he could control multiple elements. That was water, wind and fire. But I dropped that later on, and just stuck to water, before making a reveal that their powers weren't really theirs, just 'borrowed', and they disappeared around season 11. Then they tried dark magic and... well, cursed themself, and are stuck in the half oni form. But that comes with advantage later on, as he develops destruction powers, contrasting the powers of creation Lloyd had for a while.

I guess they're equal to Lloyd, not counting weird interdimensional powers that aren't relevant untill later on. The rules are that, Mika has to be on a pretty equal Level with the ninja when they're in Ninjago. Definitely not more powerful than Wu and Garmadon, unless he really wants to be...

But... If Mika doesn't like how a fight goes, they change some things, bend the rules... Mika is holding themself back, because they want to fit in with the ninja. After all, how fun is the story if the heroes don't struggle?

Tsubasa Chronicle Month - Day 4 - Fai

It happens all at once and it feels like he's been slammed into full-force by an avalanche. Fai is left lightheaded for a second, and nauseated. Mostly, he’s just disoriented, because- He blinks. That can’t be right?

No, but it is. 

His magic is back.

After months and months; days and nights on end during which he'd felt like crawling out of his very skin not only because he couldn't talk and couldn't understand what was being said around him, at long last, Fai’s magic is back where it belongs. He blinks again, concentrates, and he can feel the chaotic yet elegant swirls of it dancing in the returned blue of his eyes.

He doesn’t even need a mirror to know. 

Which means, whatever the enchantment in the country of Yama that was suppressing it, likely that damn castle in the sky that is now crumbling to dust above them, has finally released its grip on him.

Though, it's not like I'm using it, he thinks to himself as he straightens from his slouch against Kurogane’s back, pasting a smile on his face for the children's sake (Kurogane will probably see right through it, damn him).  Still, not being able to feel it, to access it, to sink into it… He shudders. Does his damnedest to pack it away, as he looks at Syaoran over the ninja’s shoulder. It doesn't matter anymore. I haven’t lost it.

He shakes his head as Kurogane starts berating his pupil, and teases him for being a strict teacher.

I don’t even want to think about what would have happened had I truly lost it, or even part of it.
