——
"So I'm cleared?" You asked, sitting up on the table.
"Yes Mrs Severide, you may now return to full workouts, sexual activity and carrying more than 20 pounds. Take it slow, if anything is painful or feels out of the ordinary, please give us a call," Dr Calhoun replied, "how does that make you feel? Mentally?"
"Honestly, a little nervous."
"Why?"
"What if something happens?"
"From everything that I have checked, there is no need for concern. If something happens, we're only a call away. If its after hours, head to Med and have them page me. If there's something wrong, and I don’t think there is, but if something happens, we will take care of it. There's no need to worry."
"Okay. So I'm really good to go?"
"Absolutely. My last word of advice because I've been doing this for a while and I now have two of my own, use a good lube or try it in the shower for the first few times. It makes all the difference."
You chuckled, "Thank you Doctor Calhoun, for eveything."
"If you ever decide to have more children or need a GYN, give me a call."
Dr Calhoun left the room and you collected yourself and Alexis to leave your final OB appointment for the foreseeable future.
After arriving back at your car, you placed Alexis' carseat in the base and called Kelly.
"Hey, how'd it go?" Kelly eagerly answered your call.
"Good, all cleared and good to go. You home from shift yet?"
"Just leaving 51. Meet you at home?”
"Sounds good, see you soon. Love you."
"Love you too."
“Kelly, you here?" You heard rustling in the bedroom.
“Yeah, hold on.”
The rustling continued.
“What are you doing?” You laughed.
“Found it,” he exited your bedroom holding a box.
He followed you to the couch, a now sleeping baby nestled in the crook of your arm.
“Whatcha got there?”
“Katie sent us some stuff from New York for Alexis.”
“Katie working today? We should FaceTime her to open it.”
“How long has Alexis been asleep?”
“Almost an hour. I fed her before my appointment and she slept the whole time.”
“How lucky are we that she’s a damn good sleeper?”
“So lucky.”
He looked at the unopened USPS box on the coffee table.
“So calling Katie?”
“Let’s do it, I’ll see if Alexis wakes up when I pick her up.”
You picked Alexis up as Kelly started the FaceTime call to his sister. Alexis awoke, but was her usual calm self as soon as she opened her eyes.
“Hi Alexis!!” Katie smiled as she answered the FaceTime call.
You took Alexis’ arm in your hand and gave Katie a little wave.
“We wanted to wait to open the package until we were with you, but I guess FaceTime will have to do,” Kelly laughed.
“Actually, let’s wait to do it until I’m there.”
“How long will that be?”
“About 30 seconds,” she giggled, knocking on your apartment door.
Kelly practically ran to open the door and hug her.
“How long has it been?” He chuckled.
“Too long,” she smiled, hugging him back.
You invited Katie in and spent the rest of the day hanging out and catching up, before finally opening the package. It was filled with NYC and Manhattan-related gifts along with a white envelope on the bottom.
“What’s in there?” You asked, curiously.
“Open it,” she smiled.
“Tickets to the Blackhawks game?” Kelly was giddy, he was so excited.
“They’re for tonight, I’ll babysit. You guys have fun,” Katie grinned.
“Katie, I- I- I don’t know what to say,” you started to tear up.
“Don’t say anything, I’m happy to do it. I’m gonna go check into my hotel and I’ll be back in time for you guys to get to the game.”
“Kelly are you ready?” You called into the bedroom while bopping Alexis.
“Yup, I’ll be right there.”
He walked out of the bedroom with his Blackhawks jersey in hand, wearing one of those undershirts you couldn’t help but fall in love with.
“You gonna carry that at the game too?” You giggled.
“Don’t want Alexis to spit up on it. Put it on when we leave,” he laughed, taking your daughter from your arms.
“Katie will be here in like 30 minutes. I gotta curl my hair and do my makeup and get changed.”
“Already found something for you to wear,” he smirked, “it’s on the bed.”
You walked in to the bedroom to find your Jonathan Toews jersey and your favourite pair of jeans on the bed.
"How did you know?" you laughed.
"What can I say? I know you well, babe."
You changed quickly and fixed up your curls.
"Katie's here," Kelly called.
"Be right there."
Quickly, you threw on some mascara and lip gloss before going to the living room.
"You look good babe," Kelly smiled, handing Alexis off to Katie.
You leaned over and kissed him, feeling a little more like you wanted to stay in rather than go out.
"There's, uh, breast milk in the fridge, her schedule is on the counter. Um, Sylvie's number is on the fridge in case there's any, uh, problems," your mind distracted from the kiss, you couldn’t help but giggle.
"We'll be fine. You guys have fun," Katie smiled.
You gave Alexis a hug and a kiss on the cheek, "good night baby, mommy loves you so much."
"Good night Alexis, daddy loves you to the moon and back."
Watching Kelly love Alexis was something that made you fall in love with him more and more. Having a stable husband with whom you shared a child with was something you dreamt of since high school.
Kelly grabbed his jersey and followed you out the door.
--
Walking out of the United Center back to Kelly's car, you were exilerated, but exhasted. The Blackhawks had just snapped their 5 game losing streak, and won with a 4-0 shoutout. That was the perfect end to your first night out after becoming parents.
"How you feeling?" Kelly asked, "you up for Molly's or are you done for the night?"
You stopped at the car, leaning into Kelly for a kiss, "What about something else?" you smiled.
"You up for that? You just got cleared today," he asked, kissing your neck. He knew you wouldn't say anything unless you were ready.
"Bassinet is finally in Alexis' room. Seems like a great time to test things out again."
"You look so good tonight baby, we'll do whatever you want," he smiled as he went back in for another kiss.
The traffic home was a nightmare, but by the time you got to the apartment, you were ready for anything.
"We're home," you smiled, opening the apartment door.
Katie was asleep on the couch, but woke at the sound of your shoes coming through the door.
"How'd it go?" You asked, going to check the baby monitor.
"Been up every 3 hours since you guys left, but she just went down about a half hour ago if you guys want to get some sleep," she yawned, packing up her purse.
“You need a ride to the hotel?” Kelly asked.
“I have an uber a few minutes away, but thank you.”
“I have another day before I’m back on shift, wanna meet up and do something tomorrow?”
“That sounds great, I’ll text you guys when I’m ready for the day.”
You and Kelly both hugged Katie before seeing her out of the apartment. You watched her get on the elevator and then locked the door behind you as you entered the apartment.
“Shower or bed?” You laughed, pulling him closer for a kiss by the collar on his jersey.
“Whatever you want baby,” he chuckled, pulling your jersey off, “it’s your night.”
You grabbed Kelly by the hand and led him into the master en suite. The bathroom door clicked shut and Alexis started to cry.
“Shit,” you started to laugh, resting your head on his chest.
“I’ll get her, put her back down. I’ll met you in there in a few.”
Kelly left the bathroom for the nursery and you started the water. Throwing your clothes on the counter, your hand brushed by your scar. Healed up and mostly pain free, it was still a reminder of what had to be done to bring Alexis into the world. You stepped in the shower, wincing at the feel of the water being a tad too cold, and turned the temperature to more suit the steamy theme of the evening. Kelly returned, already having left his jersey in the other room.
“How’s the baby?” You asked.
“Good, pacifier fell out of her mouth.” He mindlessly undid his jeans and removed the tank covering his chest.  He looked back towards the shower.
“Damn, you’re-“ he was almost breathless. The two of you had been intimate all throughout your pregnancy, but the morning sickness wasn’t as attractive as you naked in the shower.
“You gonna join me?” You didn’t have to ask twice, he was gonna obey the first time.
He finished undressing and practically leapt into the shower. With a flick of the wrist, he tipped your chin up to make eye contact with him. Backing you in the shower’s wall, he placed his other hand on the tile for support. He leaned in and the passionate kisses began shortly after.

Chapter 10: The Next One
Tumblr media
*Gif belongs to its rightful owner, it is not mine*
Pairing: Kelly Severide x reader
Summary: After your first night out as parents, you and Kelly rekindle your intimate spark and discuss the next step in your relationship
Words: 537
Warnings: intimate moments, mentions of sex, breastfeeding, protective Kelly Severide

Notes: Remember how I keep saying I’m done writing this? Welp, it turns out I’ve got more to write about!!

Firmly wrapped in your robe, Kelly danced you out of the en suite towards your bed.
“That was-“ he started, collapsing on the bed.
“The most fun I’ve had in a long time.” You kissed him.
Alexis started to fuss. You both looked at each other, half smiling, half trying to figure out your excuse for the other to get the baby.
“You should get her,” you chuckled.
“Why?”
“I don’t think I can move,” you laughed, getting cuddled up under the blankets.
“And you think I can?” he laughed, “we haven’t done it like that since our wedding night.”
“It’s a good thing you didn’t forget babe.”
Kelly got up from the bed, threw a pair of boxers on from the hook by the door and grabbed Alexis from her crib in the next room.
“I’m not going to be very much help here,” he called out to you, “she’s hungry.”
“Can you bring her in here?” You asked, propping yourself up against the headboard.
“Already here,” he chuckled, cradling yourself fussy baby in his arms.
“This avoiding-a-bottle thing is getting really annoying,” you say, positioning the baby against the freshly warmed skin of your chest.
“Baby, I think you’re going to miss this sooner than you think.”
You shrugged, pulling the blankets up to keep you and Alexis warm. Kelly sat beside you on the bed, rubbing your leg.
“I think she’s almost done, can you take her back when she’s done?”
“Of course. Just let me know when you’re ready.”
After a few more minutes passed, Alexis was finished and you handed her off to Kelly.
Removing your robe, you changed into your favourite pajamas, one of Kelly’s old squad 3 T-shirts and a pair of shorts from the when you were in college. Both garments feeling a bit tighter than they used to after having Alexis.
When Kelly returned, he laid back in the bed, watching you finish changing before getting back into the king size bed.
He placed his hand on your stomach, “thank you for carrying our baby and keeping her safe all those months.”
You leaned up to kiss him, unsure of what to say next, “when do you want the one?”
Kelly was taken aback by the question, “I’m still not ready for Alexis, I don’t think I’m going to be ready for a long time.”
Clearly saddened by his response, the gears in your mind started turning a mile a minute, “well, I-“
“Wait, babe. What I mean is I don’t think there’s a right time to have another baby. Once you’re physically and mentally and emotionally ready, that’s when I will be ready. I had doubts when you told me you were pregnant and we were having our first baby unexpectedly, but you’ve been so amazing through everything.”
You sighed out of relief, “I think I’m ready.”
“She’s only 6 weeks old. There’s no pressure here from me to have our next kid before Alexis turns 1.”
“I’ve always wanted kids close together.”
“Then, I guess there’s only one thing to do,” he smiled, moving his hand south of your stomach.
“I guess so,” you giggled, mentally preparing yourself for the long night you were in for.

As you wiped the tears from your eyes, there was a cheerful knock at the door.
“Come in,” you announced.
Sylvie peeked her head in the room.
“Hey girl,” she laughed, “how you feeling?”
“I’m good,” you paused, “yeah, I’m okay.”
“Is now a good time? We’ve got some firefighters here who’d like to meet her.”
“I’ll let you meet her first.”
Coming over to the crib, Sylvie was in awe. You picked Alexis up and set her in Sylvie’s ready arms.
“What’s this babe’s name?” She asked, bouncing Alexis slightly.
“Alexis Shay Severide.”
“Aw, I love that. What did your mom think of you name your daughter after your sister?”
“She’s not so pleased, but she’ll get over it when she meets her. She’ll be here in a few days I hope.”
“She’ll fall in love with Alexis as soon as she meets her.”
Matt knocked on the door and came up behind Sylvie.
“Is this her?” Matt a sled, looking over at Kelly.
“This is her,” Kelly smiled back.
You began to tear up again as you watched Sylvie and Matt fall in love with Alexis. Kelly sat beside you and you rested your head on his shoulder.
“When’s your turn?” Kelly chuckled.
“One firehouse baby at a time,” Matt laughed, “we’ve been thinking about it though.”
“Matt do you want to hold her?” Sylvie asked.
Matt stuttered over his words before finally smiling and admitting, “I’ll absolutely take her.”
As Sylvie handed Alexis over, you and Kelly shared a look and a nod.
“What was that about?” Sylvie asked, gesturing to the nod she just witnessed.
“Kelly and I would like to ask you both if you’d be Alexis’ godparents,” you admitted.
Sylvie and Matt looked at each other, both speechless.
“Of course,” Matt answered.
Kelly stood up, leaning into Matt for a hug.
“Thank you, both of you,” Kelly said, pulling away from Matt and sitting in the chair beside you.
Joe poked his head in the door.
“Hey, Severide. Mind if I bring in a few more smoke eaters?” Joe asked.
“Not at all. Who’s here?” Kelly replied.
“Everyone. Chief took the firehouse out of service for an hour or two.”
A few moments later, all of 51 poured into your recovery room, the air swelling with love. Everyone took turns passing your baby around and asking how you were doing.
“How you feeling, Severide?” Herrmann asked.
“I’m still in shock, but it got a great wife to be able to be a great father.”
“No feeling like being a father. After every kid Cindy and I had, I was still in shock. That’s normal.”
“Thanks Herrmann.”
Boden walked over to you and Kelly, gaining to attention of the crowd.
“I hate to cut this party short, but HQ has requested a return to quarters,” he announced.
“C’mon Chief, Severide will only be a first-time dad once,” Cruz argued.
“I know, I know,” he sighed, “I’ll make Kelly bring the baby by 51 soon.”
Otis handed you back Alexis and gathered his gear from the corner.
“Congratulations to you both. Really is a special day. Bring this baby by the firehouse real soon, would you? She’s a great morale boost,” Boden chuckled.
“Thank you all for coming. It’s good to know she’s got a community looking out for her,” you responded, tearing up once again.
As your room emptied, you and Kelly had a few moments to yourself with Alexis. You handed Alexis to her daddy’s very capable hands and Kelly sat in your bed beside you.
“You know what baby?” Kelly told you.
“What’s up?”
“I’m really proud of you today. Thank you for bringing our daughter into the world today.”
“I can’t wait to bring her home with you tomorrow.”
There was a knock at the door and Dr Calhoun appeared.
“I was speaking with another physician about our next steps in terms of when I can discharge you, given how you’ve been doing,” she explained.

“She’s almost here,” Dr Calhoun announced, “just a few more minutes and you’ll meet your little girl.”
“See baby? You’re doing amazing,” Kelly beamed, kissing you on the cheek.
“I didn’t think I’d be this nervous to be on the table,” you chuckled.
“And she’s out,” Dr Calhoun announced, rushing the baby to the warmer behind her.
“Why isn’t she crying? Kelly, why isn’t she crying?” You asked, a worried tone to your voice.
“Dr Calhoun? Is everything okay?” Kelly gruffly called over.
“Just clearing the mouth and nose and taking some measurements. Nothing to worry about,” she replied, “the nurses will take her final measurements and bring her over while I close your abdomen.”
You heard a loud wail come from across the room. You were both okay.
“We’re bring her over now, Mrs Severide,” a nurse told you as she brought over your baby and set her on your chest.
“Baby, she’s beautiful,” you started to tear up.
“She gets it from her mama,” he replied, brushing back your hair and kissing your forehead.
As Dr Calhoun finished stitching you up, the team got you ready to head into post op.
The trip to your recovery room was long, but your new baby made it feel short.
Once you and Kelly were settled in your recovery room, a nurse knocked on your door.
“Mrs Severide?” the nurse asked, “two firefighters are here to see you.”
“Send them in please,” you replied.
A few moments later, Casey and Boden walked through your door.
“How’d it go?” Casey asked you.
“I’m okay. Baby is perfect” you replied, a smile stuck to your face.
“Glad to hear,” Boden smiled, “the rest of 51 will be by after shift.”
“We just figured the two of us would come by for now, keep the knuckleheads at the firehouse,” Casey laughed.
“Knock knock,” Dr Calhoun said, pushing the door back, “is now a good time?”
“We’ll leave you guys be. I’ll bring Sylvie by tomorrow,” Casey smiled.
“Thanks Matt,” Kelly replied.
“Thank you guys for coming. It’s good to know she already has 51 looking out for her,” you smiled, wiping the tears off your face.
Casey and Boden left the room, as Doctor Calhoun made her way over to your bedside.
“The surgery went well. We’ll keep you here for a few days, then you both should be good to go home,” she smiled.
“That’s great news,” Kelly smiled.
“The best thing now is establishing some skin-to-skin with both of you. I’ll leave you guys to it, but a nurse will be outside if you need anything.”
Kelly helped you unbutton the top clasps on your gown, exposing the top of your chest. Feeling your brand new baby breathe on your chest was a surreal feeling, something you’d never thought you’d get.
Doctor Calhoun left your room. Kelly leaned over your bed and kissed you.
Looking over at you with your brand new baby, Kelly said, “I guess we should name her now, huh?”
“I’ve got a few ideas,” you chuckled.
“Which are?” He smiled.
“Well, for starters, I would like it to mean and honour something. I know we’ve talked about it before, but I think her middle name should be Shay. Leslie is a big reason we’re together and if we weren’t together, this little girl wouldn’t be here.”
“Baby,” Kelly’s eyes started to fill with tears, “I love you- I don’t even know what to say.”
“So that’s a yes to the middle name?”
“Of course it’s a yes.”
“Ok so first name ideas?”
“Alexis.”
“Alexis?”
“Your sister would’ve hopped on a plane as soon as we found out you were pregnant if it weren’t for losing her at 28. If she can’t be here, we should find a way to honour her memory. Alexis would’ve loved meeting her niece.”
“Alexis Shay Severide?”
“So it’s settled?”
“It’s settled. Ready to hold your daughter?”
“Never been so ready.”
“Take your shirt off then, mister.”
“Damn, I missed you saying that,” he laughed.
Picking up Alexis and handing her over to her father, your husband. It still didn’t feel real.
“She really is so beautiful,” he smiled.
There was a knock on the door and a blonde woman with glasses poked her head around the corner.
“We should call your mom,” Kelly reminded, “she’d want to come meet Alexis.”
“Can you FaceTime her?”
“Of course, babe. Do you want her back?”
“Well I mean, if you’re offering,” you chuckled.
You took Alexis back from Kelly and he grabbed his phone to call your mom.
“Hey mom, I’ve got someone who I think you’ll want to meet,” you laughed, Kelly tipping the phone down to see Alexis.
“Honey! You didn’t tell me she was arriving early! What’s her name? When was she born?” Your mom gushed.
“That’s actually why we’re calling. We figured you’d want to come meet her in person. She was born late this morning, then we picked her name a few minutes ago. Meet your granddaughter, Alexis Shay Severide.”
“Alexis? Like your sister?” She sighed, “why would you do that?”
“We thought it would be a good way to honour the life of my sister. Is there something wrong?” You felt yourself become stressed.

——
9:37AM. It was Thursday morning, only a few days after Alexis was born. You rolled over in the king size bed to find Kelly wasn’t beside you. Looking beside you, you could see Alexis wasn’t in her bassinet either.
Still sore from surgery, you slowly put your slippers on and went to the living room to find the rest of your family. Kelly was laying on the couch, shirtless, with Alexis on his chest and a blanket covering them while watching SportsCenter. Reaching down, you rubbed his shoulder to get his attention.
“How long you been here?” You asked, sitting beside him on the couch.
“Less than an hour I think. I didn’t want to wake you, I know you’re exhausted, so I fed her a bottle and we’ve been watching highlights of the Blackhawks game,” he replied with a smile.
“Your mom texted me last night.”
“Oh yeah? What did she say?”
“Said you texted her about the baby. She wants to visit when we’re ready. She can come today if that works for you.”
He nodded.
“Can you grab my phone?” He asked, “the new lieutenant officially starts today and Cruz was gonna text me about who they got.”
You wandered back into the bedroom and found his phone still charging on his nightstand. Looking at the notifications on his screen, there was a text from Boden.
Fixing your eyes on the screen of his phone, Boden had texted “call me.”
“No text from Cruz, just Boden,” you announced.
“What’d he say?”
“Call me.”
“That can’t be good.”
“Probably not. Want me to take Alexis so you can call him?”
Kelly pulled back the blanket and began to laugh. Once you saw what he had done, you started to laugh too.
“You wrapped the baby?” You chuckled, looking at the Moby Wrap you received from your baby shower wrapped around him and Alexis.
“Hands free,” he laughed.
“Coffee?”
“Sure.”
As you wandered to the kitchen, you saw Kelly mute the tv and call Boden, all while Alexis was sleeping on his chest.
A few moments later, you came back to the couch with two coffees in hand. Alexis had started to fuss as Kelly hung up the phone.
“What did Boden want?” You asked, handing him one of the fresh coffees from your hands.
“New lieutenant didn’t show up for work today,” he replied.
“Who did they get in for you?”
“Connor Maxwell, used to be an engine lieutenant before he got his squad certs.”
“Do they know what happened?”
“Boden says the guy overslept, but he doesn’t buy it. They’re gonna let him stay for the shift and cut him loose if it doesn’t go well.”
As Kelly told you about this squad lieutenant, he got a look of desperation in his eyes.
“What’s wrong?” You asked.
“I’m a little worried about my men.”
“Why, baby?”
“I’ve never been taken a furlough this long in a very long time.”
“Are you scared they’re gonna like this new lieutenant more than you?” You laughed, rubbing his shoulder.
“I just don’t want my company to go to hell while I’m gone,” he chuckled, kissing your forehead.
“How much time did you take off?
“I told Boden 8 weeks.”
“Is there a way you can go back early?”
“I guess I could, but I want to be here for you and our baby.”
Alexis began to fuss, still wrapped with her dad.
“I’ll take her, babe. She’s probably hungry.”
Kelly unwrapped Alexis and handed her to you. You raised your shirt, exposing yourself in order to feed your baby.
“I’m sure we’ll be fine here, if you want to go back early, Kelly,” you told him.
“I don’t want you to feel overwhelmed or like I want to work more than be home with our brand new baby.”
“I’ve got 8 months of leave. You would’ve had to leave me home with Alexis by myself when you’re on shift regardless.”
“I know, I know, I just hoped she’d be a little older first.”
“It’s like 3 days a week max, I’m sure we’ll be okay if you want to go back early,” you smiled, adjusting your head’s position to leaning on his shoulder, “I know you love your job and I know you love us, but we’ll be okay if this is what you want.”
“Are you sure?” He asked, wrapping his arm around you.
“Kelly, would I ever lie to you?”
“I guess I have my answer then.”
“You should call Boden and tell him there’s been a change of plans,” you gestured to his phone on the side table.
He grabbed his phone and you finished feeding Alexis. Kelly put his phone on speaker phone as you burped Alexis.
“Kelly, how’s the father life treating you?” Boden asked him as he picked up. You could hear his smile through the phone.
“Ah, Chief it couldn’t be better,” Kelly grinned, “do you have a minute?”
“Sure, what’s on your mind?”
“I was thinking about coming back to work a little earlier than what I originally planned.”
“When were you thinking?”
“Next shift, if you’ll let me.”
“Can’t stay away too long, huh?”
“What can I say? It’s in my blood,” Kelly chuckled.
“Actually though Kelly, is your wife okay with this? You sure you don’t want to take some time with your baby?”
“We’ve talked it over, it was kinda her idea actually.”
“I know he’s missing it, I’ll be okay if he goes back,” you piped up.
“Well, I still haven’t filled your spot for next shift. You’re welcome to it if you want it.”
“Thanks, Chief. I’ll be there.”
Kelly hung up the phone and turned to look at you.
“You’re really sure?” He asked, leaning in to give you a kiss.
“Yes, Kelly, I’ll be fine. Maybe I’ll even bring her over to the firehouse when you’re on shift,” you replied, “you don’t have to be worried.”
“I love you, thank you for being everything I wanted in life.”
You leaned over and hugged him with one arm, Alexis dozing in the other.
“Can you take her so I can have a quick shower? I still feel like hospital.”
“Of course baby, do what you need.”
You handed over Alexis to her father and just the sight of the two of them together melted your heart.
“Oh babe, question for you,” Kelly asked as you were headed to grab your house coat, “do we have more bottles? Or should I clean a couple for later?”
“Uh,” you were wracking your brain, trying to figure out where your nesting brain put them, “I think they’re in the drawer by the fridge, but honestly I don’t remember.”
Changing out of your clothes and into your bathrobe, you couldn’t help but notice the horizontal scar on your stomach. It was still a little painful when your hand brushed it, but the pain didn’t matter because you had your baby. The perfect baby, with the perfect husband. You didn’t need anything else.
Turning on the water and getting in the shower, Kelly knocked on the bathroom door.
“I hate to interrupt you,” he chuckled, “but there’s someone here who you’re going to want to see.”
“Can it wait until after my shower? I’ll be quick, I promise. Ask if they can wait?” You asked, shampoo already lathered in your hair.
“Yeah, we’ll be out here.”
Kelly closed the door behind him and the thought of who could be here for you raced through your mind as you quickly finished your shower. After finishing up and drying off, you threw your hair up in a messy bun and put on your sweats to go see your visitor.
“Babe, I made some breakfast for the four of us,” Kelly told you, setting the table.
“Who’s here? And where’s Alexis?” You asked.
“Hi, sweetie,” a familiar voice beamed.
“Mom, what are you doing here?” You asked.
“I came to apologize,” she said, “I’m so sorry for what I said.”
Without saying a word, you walked over to your mom and gave her the tightest hug of your life. A couple tears filled your eyes.
“You want to meet your granddaughter?” You asked, motioning to Kelly to remove Alexis from the wrap.
“Yeah, I’d love you,” she smiled.
Handing over your daughter to your own mother was such a special experience for both of you.
“Kelly can you take a picture?” You asked.
“Oh, honey, I just got off a plane, I look awful.”
“Mom, you look great. I want to remember this.”
Kelly grabbed his phone from the counter and took a picture of the three of you together.
“I also came for another reason,” she admitted, sitting down at the table, “Kelly and I were talking while you were finishing your shower. He told me he’s going back to work earlier than expected. I already called back home and I’ve made arrangements to stay with you for a week or two.”
“Mom, you didn’t have to do that.”
“Yes I did, my daughter had my first granddaughter. I need to be here with you.”
“I’ll be fine on my own while Kelly is on shift, you don’t need to help me.”
“Well, then I’ll explore Chicago. I’ve never had the chance to do some sightseeing here.”
You nodded and brought Alexis’ motorized baby swing closer to the table.
“Set her in the swing while we eat, you can hold her after,” you offered.
Your mom set Alexis in the swing and it bangan to slowly swing side to side.
“So Kelly, when are you back to work?” your mom asked.
“Tomorrow morning,” he said, grabbing some more bacon from the counter.
“That’s quick,” she replied.
“Yeah, only missed two shifts, but I know my girls will be okay for 24 hours without me.”

The sound of Kelly’s alarm startled you awake.
“I’m sorry, did I wake you?,” Kelly rushed.
You rolled over to see Kelly throwing on his squad jacket and grabbing his duffel from the floor.
“Stay safe today, I love you,” you said, getting up to give him a kiss.
“I love you too, but you could’ve stayed in bed, y’know?” He chuckled, kissing you.
“I figured I’d check on Alexis.”
“I got that, you go back to bed.”
You crawled back into bed, now shifted to the middle because you had it all to yourself. Kelly checked on the sleeping baby and left the bedroom, quietly shutting the door behind him. Getting up for work in the morning was something you didn’t miss.
——
“Hey mom,” you called from the bedroom, waking up from the second half of your sleep, “where’s Alexis?”
“She started to fuss, so I got up and fed her a bottle,” she replied, “I hope that’s okay.”
“Thanks mom.”
“Is there anything in particular you’d like to do today?”
“I told Kelly I’d bring Alexis by the firehouse at some point today.”
“Do you need me to do anything?”
“I should be okay after I get ready for the day. I just want to get dressed, then you can go sightseeing for the day. Meet back here for dinner?”
“Sure, I’ll cook.”
“Mom, you don’t have to do that,” you laughed, pulling some leggings, a t shirt and a hoodie out of your drawer.
“I’ll always cook for you, baby.”
“Well, thank you mom.”
You changed into your outfit for the day and went to find your mom and baby.
“What’s on your list of things to see today?” You asked.
“Not really sure. I guess I’ll figure it out once I get started.”
“That’s the mom I know,” you chuckled.
“Do you want breakfast?”
“I’m gonna get the firehouse a couple dozen donuts before I bring Alexis to visit. I’ll grab something for breakfast while I’m at the bakery.”
“As long as you’re eating.”
“Don’t worry mom, I’ll have an extra donut just to make sure,” you giggled, packing a diaper bag for a full day of firehouse adventures, “Do you want a ride somewhere? I can drop you off on the way.”
“Sweetie, you’re too kind. I’ve got a rental car, I’ll be okay.”
“If you say so. Can I show you something?”
“Yes, please do!”
You led your mom to your bedroom where you showed her a onesie on the dresser.
“Future Firefighter,” she giggled, “sweetie I love that.”
“Kelly doesn’t know about it yet. I’m gonna put Alexis in it and surprise him today.”
“That’s adorable.”
“Help me get her in it?”
“Sure.”
You and your mom managed to get Alexis into her onesie.
"I'm gonna take a picture, send it to Kelly's mom," you laughed, pulling out your phone.
You snapped a quick picture and sent it to Jennifer, before loading up Alexis in her carseat.
"I guess we're off," you said, hugging your mom goodbye, "see you tonight."
"Yes, see you tonight."
You brought Alexis to your car and secured her in the backseat. Upon sitting in the driver's seat, you looked in your rearview mirror to see Alexis peacefully sleeping. A wave of happiest washed over you as you shifted your car in drive towards to donut shop.
Arriving at the donut shop near the firehouse, you were relieved to find the bakery had a drive through.
"Hi, 3 dozen donuts please," you announced into the loud speaker.
"22 dollars, drive up to the window."
Rolling up to the window, you grabbed 25 dollars from your purse.
"These for the fire station down the street? 51?" the worker asked.
"Yes, my husband is a lieutenant on the rescue squad there. This is his first shift back after having our daughter and I wanted to bring them something."
You attempted to hand her the cash.
"No, please, these are on me, I insist. They helped my mom out of her house when her kitchen caught fire."
"Wow, thank you so much, I'll pass it along to them."
The worker handed you three boxes of donuts and you buckled them into the passenger seat on your way to 51.
"We're here," you gleefully cheered to Alexis as you wrapped her in the Moby Wrap and carried the donuts into the firehouse.
"Special delivery!" you shouted, walking up the apron with the boxes.
"Babe, you didn't have to bring donuts," Kelly exclaimed, standing up from the squad table.
"Lieutenant, who are we to turn down donuts?" Joe asked, grabbing the boxes from your arms, "thank you for this."
"Don't thank me, the woman working at the donut shop down the road paid for the donuts. Apparently you guys helped her mom out of a kitchen fire."
Cruz smiled and took the donuts into the common room. Kelly came over and kissed you before checking on Alexis.
“How’s the first day back?” You asked, unwrapping Alexis.
“Good, sucks to be away from you two though.”
“I missed your pancakes this morning,” you laughed, unwrapping Alexis and handing her to Kelly.
He spotted the onesie, “where did you get this, babe?” he laughed.
“I had it made a couple months ago, figured you’d like it, you chuckled.
“Where’s your mom at today?” Kelly asked, bouncing Alexis up and down.
“Sightseeing or something. Not entirely sure. I’ll meet her at home tonight for dinner though. Any interesting calls?”
“Grease fire, no big deal. Hey, do you have plans today?”
“Just dinner with mom, why?”
“Boden’s been talking about Alexis since I got in today.”
“Let’s take her to him then.”
You walked with Kelly towards Boden’s office, Sylvie and Matt now seeing you, and following behind.
“Is that a firehouse baby I see?” Sylvie asked gleefully.
“It sure is,” you smiled, “we’re taking her to see Boden. Come with?”
“You don’t have to ask me twice.”
Kelly led the way into Boden’s office.
“Severide, is that your little one?” He chuckled, motioning to the newborn in your husband’s arms.
“Sure is chief,” he smiled, admiring Alexis.
“And how are you doing?” Wallace asked you.
“I’m doing well I think. How’s Kelly doing?” You chuckled.
“I think he’s missing you and the baby, but being back at the firehouse is doing him well.”
“Good to hear.”
“Truck 81, Engine 51, Squad 3, Ambulance 61, Battalion 25, structure fire, 1821 West Wolcott,” dispatch announced.
“I’m sorry baby, I-,” Kelly started, handing Alexis to you.
“Don’t be sorry, you’re at work,” you smiled, placing Alexis back in the baby wrap, “I’ll stick around with Connie.”
Kelly nodded and speed walked behind Sylvie, Matt and Boden towards the apparatus floor.
——
By early next morning, Kelly was home from shift. You were still asleep and your mom was taking care of Alexis.
After a rough night with little sleep at the firehouse, Kelly came home ready to collapse.
“Hey,” you groaned, swiping the hair from your eyes, “how was shift?”
“Exhausting, we were called out to a fire and an accident after you left.”
Kelly undressed down to his boxers and got in the bed beside you.
“Alexis with my mom?” You asked, laying your head on his chest.
“She was feeding her a bottle when I came in,” he laughed, rubbing your back.
He started rubbing your side and down to your hip, the tiredness disappearing into thin air.
“How long until you get cleared for... more strenuous activities?” He chuckled.
“Not for another five weeks,” you laughed.
He rolled over and laughed, “Longest five weeks of my life.”
"Don't worry, I'll make it worth your while," you rubbed your fingers around his chest.

——
“Okay… what does that mean?” Kelly asked, standing up to show his concern.
“I want to have a neonatologist come and look over Alexis just to be sure, but I’d like to discharge you both tonight.”
You were in disbelief, absolutely shocked they’d let you out early.
“When can we have the neo- who did you say that was?” You asked.
“A neonatologist. Dr Clark is his name. I’ll have him come by when he has a moment,” she smiled.
“Thank you, thank you so much.”
As Doctor Calhoun left the room, you and Kelly both had smiles plastered across your faces.
“I guess we better start packing up,” you shrugged.
A knock on the door a few moments later interrupted your packing. A familiar face walked in.
“Clark?” Kelly asked in disbelief, “Jeff Clark?”
“Kelly, this your kid?” Jeff responded.
“Yup, this is her.”
“She’s beautiful, mind if I do my checkup?”
“Not at all.”
“Hi, I’m-“ you started.
“Oh right, sorry baby. This is my wife, a damn trooper carrying a Severide baby,” Kelly chuckled.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Doctor Jeff Clark, uh… formerly Firefighter Jeff Clark. I used to work with Kelly before going to medical school,” Dr Clark explained.
“Good to meet you, Doctor Clark.”
“Jeff, please. Kelly’s a good friend.”
“Alright, Jeff.”
Walking towards you and Kelly, he pulled his stethoscope out.
“I can do my exam while she’s still in your arms, if that’s good with you Kelly,” Clark motioned.
“Absolutely. How did you get into neonatal…?” He led off.
“Neonatology? Funny story actually,” he laughed, moving the stethoscope around Alexis’ back and chest, “through my residency, I had the opportunity to work in the NICU for a shift. Loved it so much, I took on a few more shifts and eventually I switched over. Now I get to take care of brand new babies for a living.”
“It’s an honourable thing you’re doing here, Clark.”
“Craved the rush I got working with the CFD, now I get to do that with less bunker gear.”
Kelly chuckled, “how’s she looking?”
“Nothing as of yet that would make me want to keep her here, other than the fact she’s adorable.”
“She gets it from her dad,” you interjected, giggling.
Doctor Clark completed a little more poking and prodding on Alexis before replacing his stethoscope to his neck.
Jeff smiled, “I’m finished up here. You guys are good to take her home once we get all of the paperwork done.”
“Thank you, Clark,” Kelly stood up to hug him with one arm.
“Good luck Severide Family. Bring her back soon, will you? Always nice to see the ones that make it.”
Jeff left the room and happy tears streamed down your face.
——
“Do we have everything?” You asked, situating yourself in the wheelchair an orderly had brought for you.
“Diapers, wipes, fan, diaper cream, blankets, postpartum hospital freebies,” Kelly laughed, “I think so.”
“Car seat?”
“Alexis is in it, baby. We’re all good,” he assured you.
“Ready?” The orderly asked.
You nodded and Kelly placed the car seat on your lap. The orderly started to bring you out towards the parking lot with Kelly carrying your bag behind you.
“This is your stop,” the orderly announced as you reached Med’s exit.
“Thank you,” you replied, grabbing Alexis’ car seat and standing up.
Kelly took the car seat, “I’ve got her.”
As you made your way to where Kelly parked your SUV, what felt like miles away you might add, a few tears rolled down your face.
“What’s wrong?” Kelly stopped, enveloping you in a hug with one arm.
“I’m just so happy,” you smiled through the tears, “I didn’t think I’d ever get to have this moment.”
“Come on, let’s get you home.”
Once you made it to your car, Kelly fastened Alexis’ car seat and helped you into the backseat beside Alexis.
As he drove home, he made sure to drive as carefully as he possibly could, knowing you’d give him trouble if he didn’t.
“Ready to carry her into her first home?” Kelly asked, unlocking the apartment door.
“Excited, but exhausted,” you smiled.
“It’s late, Alexis is already asleep. I can put her in the bassinet if you want.”
“We can do it together, that’s ok.”
You waddled in the apartment, carrying Alexis’ car seat.
“I didn’t think I would still have the waddle,” you laughed.
“You may not be pregnant anymore, but you’re healing from a major surgery, babe. Take it easy.”
He led you over to your bed, still carrying your hospital bag with him.
“Anything you want out of here for tonight?” He asked, “I’ll go put the breast milk in the fridge.”
“Just my phone charger please,” you replied, taking Alexis out of her car seat and bringing her over to the bassinet by your night stand.
“Do you want to get up with her tonight or should I let you sleep?”
“If you aren’t too tired,” you smiled softly.
“I’d love to get up with her. You need sleep, I can tell.”
“I do need sleep,” you laughed, “you sure you don’t mind feeding and changing her tonight. I know that recliner couldn’t have allowed you to get too much sleep.”
“I ran into burning buildings on no sleep sometimes baby, I’m sure I can get up with Alexis so you can recover.”
Getting yourself tucked under the covers, you turned out the light on your night stand. After Kelly came back in from the kitchen, he crawled into bed beside you with heavy eyes.
Placing his arm around your waist, he snaked his hand to lay over to you belly, something he did while you were pregnant when he wasn’t on shift. Even when he was on shift, you placed your own hand there, as a comforting reminder.
“Goodnight Kelly,” you leaned over to kiss him, “I love you.”
“Goodnight baby, I love you too. Thank you for keeping our baby safe these past nine months.”

——
“It just doesn’t feel right, naming your child after your own sister. I’m sorry, you cannot name your baby Alexis.”
“Hold on. You will not talk to your daughter like that,” Kelly defended, “she has birthed a child today. Our child, not yours. She and I have the right to name our child whatever we want.”
You reached over and ended the FaceTime call.
“Are you okay?” He asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m not changing the name though.”
“Maybe if we give her some time, she’ll come around.”
“Why would she even say something like that?”
“Let’s not focus on her right now. The only people that matter right now are you and Alexis. I’ll take Alexis and let you get some sleep.”
“It’s a good thing I’ve got you to take care of me. I don’t know what I’d do.”
——
Kelly rubbed your arm as to wake you up from your nap.
“Baby, Doctor Calhoun is here. She wants to check on you,” he whispered as you started to open your eyes.
“Thanks,” you exhaled, sitting up in your bed.
“How are you feeling?” Dr Calhoun asked.
“Sore, but my baby is okay and that’s all that matters,” you smiled.
“Any issues with feeding?”
“None so far. Eats like a champ,” you laughed.
“Must be the firehouse blood in her,” Kelly smiled.
“I’ll be back to check on you in a bit,” Doctor Calhoun replied.
As Doctor Calhoun left the room, you passed Alexis to Kelly.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” he asked.
“I’ve got to go talk to a nurse. Aaron wanted to meet the baby,” you replied, getting the slippers from your bag.
“Let me get you a wheelchair.”
“I’m fine.”
“You just had a baby. I’ll get you a wheelchair and we’ll go together. Take Alexis, I’ll get the wheelchair from the hall.”
You took Alexis from Kelly’s arms. He ran to the hall and brought a wheelchair back in.
“Thank you, baby,” you winced, sitting down.
He smiled, wheeling you over to the nurse’s station.
“Can you help me find a patient?” You asked.
“I can try,” the nurse responded.
“I’m looking for Aaron Whitley. He was here for a valve replacement this morning.”
“Let me check which room he’s in.”
“Thank you.”
As the nurse searched through the records, you rubbed Alexis’ back.
“I’m sorry Mrs Severide. Mr Whitley passed away in surgery. Cardiac arrest.”
“Oh,” tears filled your eyes, “thank you. I guess I’ll go back to my room.”
Kelly brought you back to you room and got you back in your bed.
“I can’t believe he’s gone,” you admitted, tears running down your face, “he came in for a damn valve replacement and we made a plan to meet up after.”
“Matt and Sylvie wanted to come by. Maybe that’ll cheer you up.”
“Aren’t they still on shift?”
“Apparently 51 is getting a little restless because it’s been a light load of calls this shift.” Kelly couldn’t help but chuckle at his own sentence.
“Sure. Invite the firehouse. It would be good for them to meet Alexis.”
“Mind if I take Alexis off your hands while I call Boden?”
“Go for it. I’m going to go talk to the nurses.”
You hopped back into the wheelchair and brought yourself into the hallway to the nurses station to find the same nurse you had just spoken with.
“Excuse me. Can I ask you if Aaron Whitley had anyone in the waiting room during his surgery?”
“I’ll phone down to the surgical floor and ask for you. Just give me one moment.”
After a few minutes of the nurse talking on the phone, she had finally finished her call.
“The staff on the surgical floor said they spoke with a son to tell him Mr Whitley passed. A young man by the name of Mark Whitley.”
“Is he still here?”
“They said he was saying a final goodbye. If you’d like to speak with him, he should be in 1216.”
“1216? Thank you so much.”
You wheeled yourself back to your room.
“Kelly, I need to go to 1216 right now,” you rushed, “bring Alexis too please.”
Kelly handed Alexis to you and brought you into the elevator.
“Where are we going?” He asked.
“Aaron needs to meet this baby.”
“Baby, Aaron is dead.”
“He still should get the chance to meet her.”
As the elevator dinged, the doors opened and Kelly brought you down the hall to room 1216. A younger man was outside the door.
“Excuse me, are you Mark Whitley?”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry, I met your father earlier today. He was going for his valve replacement and I was waiting for my c-section. We spoke on the benches out front and he told me about you. Said he hadn’t seen you in a while so I offered to bring the baby down, to sort of cheer him up.”
“So you knew him almost as well as I did.”
“Do you mind if I pay my respects?”
“Go ahead. I’m not staying.”
Kelly brought you into the room where Aaron was.
“Ready?” He asked, his hands at the top of the sheet covering Aaron’s face.
You nodded slightly as Kelly pulled back the sheet revealing Aaron’s lifeless face.
“I told you I’d bring the baby to see you,” you began to tear up, “she’s healthy and she’s beautiful and you couldn’t stay alive long enough to keep your side of our deal.”
“Baby, this isn’t about Aaron anymore,” Kelly began to rub your back.
“You just had to go through it by yourself. Didn’t tell anyone. There were people who love you. We could’ve helped.”
Tears streamed down your face as you held Alexis a little tighter.
“Why don’t we go back to the room?” Kelly asked, covering Aaron’s face with the sheet.
You nodded and Kelly brought you out of the room and over to the elevator.
Tucking yourself back into your bed and Alexis back in her own, you feel more tears stream down your face.
“Baby,” Kelly started, “what can I do?”
“He just reminds me so much of my dad,” you cried.
He sat on your bed and hugged you, holding your head over his shoulder. Your tears fell on the shoulder of the squad jacket he was wearing.
“Is the whole thing with your mom affecting it?”
“Yeah,” you whimpered.
He rubbed your back as you cried more and more.
“It’ll be okay, baby. It’ll all be okay,” he assured you, “what can I do?”
“Take care of me.”
“Of course baby. I’ll always be here to take care of you.”
