You smiled a little, admiring how focused he looked. His brow was furrowed, his tongue pinned between his top teeth and bottom lip, sticking out ever so slightly. You could tell he was tired, the dark circles under his eyes gave it away.

Jungkook yawned, rubbing his eyes sleepily. You couldn't help but feel fond- it was one of those rare moments where he looked completely disarmed, hair flopping around carelessly as he stretched his arm above his head. He went back to typing away at his keyboard, eyes bleary.

"What?" He grumbled, still half asleep.

"Fine- stay here," You snapped, storming off to your room.

He was so irritating, all you wanted to do was be nice and look where it got you. This is exactly why you should've just ignored him and his stupid big feet. Why did he had to be so big anyway? He showed up to your apartment while you were still getting ready, dressed in a sleek navy suit and a silky light blue shirt. Jungkook popped into your room with his keys swinging around his finger casually, whistling a random tune that stopped abruptly when he made eye contact with you through the mirror. You tilted your head, inspecting him behind you.

No wonder he made you anxious, he was gorgeous. His skin glowed, inky eyes bouncing around the room. He had a shy smile on his face, growing into a slow grin the longer he looked at you. He really did look amazing in navy.

"Is this too..."

You trailed off, twisting in the mirror to inspect the open back of your dress, wondering if you were too exposed. You pulled at the material wrapped around your hips, hoping the calf grazing length would compensate for you completely bare back. It was a cool slate color, somewhere between a blue and a grey that made your skin tone glow.

"No-" Jungkook said too quickly, heavy eyes transfixed by your figure. "It's perfect- I mean, it looks great."

"I don't usually wear things so revealing," You admitted.

"You should wear whatever you want- I'm here, right?" He offered, smiling slightly at you.

His cheeks were flushed and your own face matched the rosy hue, looking away from him quickly, "What does that have to do with anything?"

"I can fight."

You glared at him in mock annoyance, breaking into a reluctant laugh when he threw an equally perturbed look back at you.

"What? Are you gonna fight our boss when she fires me for public nudity?" You joked, looking back at him from behind your shoulders.

His eyes bore into yours, a sudden seriousness in them that brought back the shaky feeling in your stomach. Butterflies- it was butterflies.

"I would if you asked me to," He said in a flat tone and you panicked, brain flopping between fight or flight. You felt your face get hot and he broke the tension with an easy grin, taking a step back from you, "Just kidding- it's not that good of a dress."

You scoffed, spinning on your heels with confidence before tapping two fingers on his chest and pushing past him, "Yes, it is."

Jungkook let you walk in front of him the entire night- partially because he hated things like this so he wanted to hide behind you and partially because he couldn't stop staring at your back. Jungkook hadn't ever paid much attention to a woman's spine but for some reason the way yours dragged down from your delicate, long neck down to rest on your hips had him transfixed. And boy, were those hips nice. He watched them sway from side to side like a pendulum and timed his breathing to it, hypnotized by the way your body glided through the party like you were treading water.

Jungkook was trying really hard to control his thoughts but lately, it had gotten harder to ignore the way you made his mind spin out of control. But he was a guy- thinking sexy thoughts about a girl was normal, right? Sexy thoughts were a given in his young and virile mind- it wasn't his fault, it didn't mean anything.

Either way, he thanked whoever designed the dress that was currently wrapped around your body a million times in his head, eyes stuck on the exposed skin. You were glowing- he wanted to reach out and touch you, test whether or not your skin was as soft as it looked. No- even better, he wanted to use his tongue on you. He wanted to glide his way down and kiss all the way to your ass.

Jungkook hated parties- usually, he refused to attending the annual gala because it was just a bunch of people crowding his space and insisting on having conversations he'd rather not be a part of. He skipped shit like this entirely, except that this year he had you. Asking you to go with him to this thing was kind of a thoughtless thing to do.

It was like a reflex- the question spilling out of his mouth before he really realized what was happening. It just seemed natural, after all- the two of you had been doing just about everything else together anyway. He had no choice but to do this with you too. Besides, the thought of you going to this thing alone made him sad and the idea of you taking another man...

Jungkook was ready to follow you around like a puppy all night but liked it better that you stuck to him instead, pouting when he drifted too far off. It was fun- drinking with you, dancing with you, laughing at coworkers getting wasted and making a fool out of themselves with you. That part didn't surprise him- he had fun doing everything with you. It wasn't until later on in the night that it dawned on him that this wasn't normal, the way he felt about you.

You had taken your heels off and refused to take another step, holding your arms out to him stubbornly, "Pick me up."

"No, you're heavy," Jungkook said stubbornly, shoving his hands in his pockets. He was already holding your purse and the five gift bags the two of you had stolen.

The look on your face made him laugh, completely obsessed with the way your face shifted from a whiny pout to a bratty glare. You scoffed and rolled your eyes, hands closing into tiny ineffectual fists.

"I am not! What good is working out all the time if you can't pick me up? Come on, just give me a piggyback ride until we get back to the car, please Jungkook?" You begged. You could see it wasn't working and got more desperate, too drunk to be ashamed of how hard you were whining, "Jungkook- please?"

He felt all the oxygen in the air dry up, leaving his chest tight. Your eyes were wide, staring up at him with pleading optimism, sleepiness softening what was meant to be a very intense expression. He wanted to replay your tone in his head a million times in a million different contexts and that's when Jungkook knew- he was fucked.

"O-Okay, fine." He lamented, turning around quickly before you could notice the blush on his cheeks.

You cheered lightly and got on his back, resting your cheek on the back of his shoulder the entire way to the car. The entire time, Jungkook stayed silent, one thought on a loop in his mind.

This wasn't normal- this wasn't normal. He had to get it together.

He had to get his shit together.

Jungkook dropped you off at your house that night and you didn't hear from him for the rest of the weekend. You were grateful, taking advantage of the lack of constant communication to get over your massive crush on him. You had to keep it platonic- he was too good of a friend to ruin it with some weird fantasy running through your mind.

By the time Monday strolled around, you felt confident that you could keep it together. You hummed on your way to work, listened to your favorite song, got yourself a matcha latte to celebrate your new outlook on things.

The project deadline was in two weeks. Time really had flown by- it was crazy to you that just 2 months ago, you thought this assignment was a death sentence. Now, it seemed like a gift. You were at the top of your game professionally- confident in the work you had put it thus far.

The way you saw Jungkook was completely different too. You understood him more, liked him a million times more than before. Sure, it was bleeding over into a crush- but that was only because the two of you were spending so much time together. Once things got back to normal and you'd go back to being regular co-workers, everything would be fine.

It was just one dream. You hadn't had another one since- except for the night of the gala, but that didn't count because you were drunk when you went to bed.

You got momentarily distracted by visions of Jungkook stretching you out and shook them out of your mind, refocusing on real life. You waited for Jungkook to show up, checking the time every two minutes.

By the time he did walk in, you felt anxious for whatever reason. He ignored you, skipping his usual greeting and cheery smile and dumped his stuff on his desk instead. You pursed your lips and got up, walking over to his desk in some attempt to push through the awkwardness. It was you making this awkward, right? It must be- Jungkook had no reason to be upset at you.

But Jungkook was quiet.

Jungkook was never quiet.

"Hey, did you see my text?" You asked, bouncing around him. He nodded blandly, not taking his eyes off of his computer. You frowned, wondering why he didn't respond to it then. You pursed your lips, trying not to pout- was he having a bad day?

"I finished coding the page, if you want we can look at it over lunch? We still need to try that Indian place two blocks over-"

"Can't. I have something to do during lunch," Jungkook dismissed quickly. "Besides, I already looked over the page this morning."

"Oh! That was fast, usually you don't start work until noon," You joked, a weird sharp feeling stabbing at your heart. What was he doing during lunch? You always had lunch together- well, at least you had been for the past two months.

Jungkook didn't laugh, shoving his mouse away and leaning back in his chair like you were annoying him or something. You flinched, watching him turn towards you with this look on his face- Jungkook had a lot of funny faces.

Your favorite was the one where he scrunched his mouth all tiny and threw a tiny little triangle shaped smile at you at the most inappropriate times. Your second favorite was the one where he was confused- wide eyes, cheeks fluffy and full, mouth hanging open a little. You had a lot of favorites, but this one wasn't one of them. This one was the worst.

He raised his eyebrows and gazed at you with an empty expression on his face. His eyes held no warmth, mouth set in an impatient slant. He was annoyed, annoyed of you.

"S-So, what did you think of the page?" You asked awkwardly, smiling to try and soften the tension in the air.

"Uh," He droned on, pulling the page up. "I think it needs a lot of work."

"Really?" You asked quietly, taking a step away from him, wanting to put more space between you and whoever had taken over Jungkook's body.

"Yeah- it's just kind of bland. I mean, I get that your coding style is usually like this but my name's attached to this project too- you know?" He said, "The code, the layout- the graphics? I mean, it all just kind of..."

"Sucks," You finished for him, feeling your eyes burn. You didn't understand it- you worked on this all night. You did exactly what the outline the two of you agreed on said. He had a hand in picking out all of it- why was he acting like he was so much better than you?

"Exactly," He nodded, "It all just kind of sucks."

You felt like you had been slapped in the face.

It wasn't the critique that hurt- it was this twisting feeling in your gut. The cold rush of abandonment that Jungkook shoved over you, isolating yourself away from him. You were meant to be partners, so why did you feel so alone?

Why did it feel like he was against you all of a sudden?

"Why would you say it like that?" You muttered. "Why are you being so mean?"

Jungkook's eyes widened and he looked at you for the first time that entire conversation, only then realizing how close you were to tears. You looked so small, standing there with your hands twisting and untwisting in front of you anxiously, staring at his computer screen with a glazed look over your face.

"I wasn't trying to-"

"Just redo it then," You snapped, cutting him off. "If you're so much better at coding- redo it since you suddenly decided to change every aspect of the project that we both agreed on. Do it all yourself and then put your stupid name on it since you're so concerned about me messing up your reputation."

"You're being dramatic," Jungkook pointed out.

Maybe he was right- but the longer you let him tear your work to pieces the closer you felt to falling apart. He said your coding sucked- the one thing you knew, at least the one thing you thought you knew you were good at. The rest of it, your lack of artistic ability, how hard you had to work in comparison to everyone else- it didn't matter because you were an excellent coder.

It was your one thing and Jungkook was sitting there saying you didn't even have that.

You took a deep breath and turned on your heels, forcing yourself to walk very calmly out of the office.

You broke into tears three steps into the parking lot.
