A. YEEEESSSSSS! When it’s cold outside it’s easy to think you may not need sun protection. The fact of the matter is both UVA and UVB rays are still very much present in the cold weather month and even on cloudy days. UVB rays do have a slight season drop, but can still absolutely contribute to the formation of skin cancer or a burn. This is particularly true if you live in or are visiting a high altitude, like when on a ski/snowboard trip. UVA rays, on the other hand, do not drop during the cold weather months and still contribute to sun damage and aging. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some facts about the sun + skin: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ☀️ You still receive 50-60% of UV rays through a car or home window. ☀️ You still receive UV rays on a cloudy day, in fact up to 80%. ☀️ 90% of aging is due to UV rays. ☀️ Snow reflects and intensifies UV rays along with high altitudes. ⛷🏂 ☀️ 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. ☀️ Darker skin tones are less at risk for developing skin cancer, BUT can be more difficult to detect or will ignore signs longer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *All information/stats from the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #babeandbeauty #esthetician #sun #skin #skincare #spf #winterskincareroutine #fallskincareroutine #antiaging #sunsafe #safesun #skinmyth #aginggracefully #happyfall #happyautumn #happywinter #keepingthewestsidebeautiful #downstairsattheloft #santacruz #sundayskincare #loveyourskin #Repost @babeandbeauty (at The Loft Salon and Spa in Santa Cruz) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Sd7AYgOvz/?igshid=2khwvbfms8h4

A huge mistake that oily-skinned people make all of the time! When your body is producing excess amounts of oil, it is trying to regulate itself and protect the surface of your skin. There are also health reasons why you will have oily skin, and also genetically you can be predisposed to the condition. Ruling out health issues and/or non-skin related medications, oily skin NEEDS balance. One totally horrible habit is EXCESSIVE SCRUBBING! Constant exfoliation will only signal your body into MAKING MORE OIL! Stop 🛑 Step away from the Clarisonic, scrub cleansers, exfoliants, acids, enzymes & AHA/BHA (alpha beta) products!!!! Gently wash with a clean washcloth one to three times a week. Insert two fingers into a damp washcloth with gentle cleanser, use GENTLE small circular motions - this provides MORE than enough exfoliation per week! Follow immediately with a light moisturizer with a formula appropriate for your skin condition. From my line “IT intelligent treatment” some patients use my Complexion Correction Serum twice daily, some use my Bright & Firm moisturizer twice daily, and some can use both. (Serum always first before moisturizer) I guide each patient, and as their skin changes for the better, so too does my directions for their home care program. Simple, targeted and consistent skin care is key to a beautiful face for life. Don’t over-scrub, DO moisturize daily 💁🏻‍♀️💋 #itintelligenttreatment ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ #noscrub #domoisturize #moisturizer #balance #oily #skin #daily #skincare #professionalhelp #ues #madisonave #cosmeceutical #cosmeceuticals #instabeauty #instaskin #skincareroutine #skinmyth #skinhack #cleanser #washcloth #gentlecare #kimlaudatiskincare (at Kim Laudati Skin Care) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrPsD6ChWtS/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16cfc3wxr9pgo

. The thought of healing a pimple overnight with a product we all have in our home sounds fantastic, however, this old “zit remedy" can do more harm than good! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Think about what toothpaste is made from. Give or take a brand’s formula and regardless of natural or commercial all toothpaste contain roughly the same combinations of ingredients - baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, menthol, sulfates, fluoride, SD alcohol and different types of mints. These ingredients are designed to polish teeth which is the hardest substance in the human body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All of these ingredients in toothpaste are very aggressive and inflammatory to the skin. Now, think about what is going on when you have a pimple - it’s an already red, inflamed, swollen local infection on the face. What do you think those ingredients in toothpaste are doing to that situation? It’s aggravating it cause more redness, more inflammation, peeling and can lead to post inflammatory pigmentation when it eventually heals. 😡 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A safer home remedy - ice your zit! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #babeandbeauty #esthetician #estheticianblogger #skincareblogger #bblogger #beautyguru #skinadvice #mythmonday #monday #skinmyth #skinscience #acne #zit #pimple #spottreatment #acnespottreatment #acnetreatment https://www.instagram.com/p/BpTBishlJTL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=df7gy9opp71h

Skin Myth #1- Acne is caused by dirt and not cleaning skin enough
Nope! Acne is caused by either genetics, hormones or dead skin and oil that can build up and clog of all of those little hair follicles which in turn causes inflammation AND those stubborn pimples!
So if you are faced with acne DON’T over wash with abrasive products. Use gentle cleansers so your face doesn’t become raw and inflamed. Abrasive products and over scrubbing will also dry out your skin. Look for products that specifically say “Non-Comedogenic” (meaning they won't clog your pores) and use a mild cleanser in the morning and at night. Make sure you exfoliate regularly (DON’T overdue it!). If your acne is super wild please see a trusted dermatologist!
Lastly, as tempting as it can be to pop those suckers DON’T DO IT! This can not only spread the bacteria oil and debris causing more acne but it can also scar that pretty little face!!!!

Skin Care Myth... It’s normal for my skin to feel tight after cleansing. Untrue. If your skin is tight, that means you have stripped your skin of all its water. What can happen immediately is dead skin cell buildup on the surface. So the solution is to find a cleanser that is not going to do that to your skin. Things you want to avoid are cleansers that have a high lather and bubble up and also bar soaps. Even if that bar soap is the one your grandmother swears by or one that has special ingredients that promises to hydrate your skin. . Often wrinkles are considered to be one of the biggest signs of aging. The reason they form is the loss of collagen and elastin. This is due to diet, lifestyle, repetitive facial expressions, environmental (sun damage/pollution) or chronological aging which ALL skin types will encounter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So why is it commonly believed that oily skin ages better than dry skin? Simply, dry skin appears to have more wrinkles than skin that isn’t dry…this include combination and oily skin. Also, dry skin is thinner so fine lines and wrinkles appear more "crinkly" and exaggerated. While oily skin, on the other hand, is naturally thicker (from genetics) and will have less of those "crinkly" apparent fine lines. However, oily skin may end up with deeper lines in the lower half of the face and more loss of tone. One upside to oily skin is since the skin is thicker where there are more oil glands like the forehead area those lines are less apparent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Oily skin doesn’t necessarily age better than dry skin they just age differently! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #babeandbeauty #esthetician #estheticianblogger #oilyskin #dryskin #mythmonday #skinmyth #myth #beautymyth #monday #beauty #skincare #skincareroutine #cleanbeauty #greenbeauty #themoreyouknow #estheticianadvice https://www.instagram.com/p/BownNMtFXAw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1li5msukrraiq

ACNE MYTHS
Ok so I’m sure everyone has heard of most of the “acne myths” so I’m going to tell you le truth about them :)
1: chocolate gives you spots: it does not directly cause acne at all. Actually dark chocolate is very good for you as it’s the most organic :3 obviously if you eat a lot of chocolate your face with break out because it isn’t getting any antioxidants or vitamins so everything in moderation :3
2: picking and squeezing spots makes them go away quicker: NONONONONO DONT DO IT! Sorry for the outburst :3 picking and squeezing spots before they are ready creates MOREEE. When you pick a spot that isn’t ready yet the sebum seeps out ( clear stuff) and causes and even BIGGER infection creating even moreee
3: tanning reduces acne : tanning will actually increase your acne. The UV rays dry out your skin meaning your skin produces more oils to moisturise your skin, when this oil builds up it causes a sebum build up creating spots. With home tanning liquids and sprays these will clog your pores like nobody’s business!!! Opt for a few hours in the sun with protection of sunscreen and gradually build up a tan :3
4: cleansing your face more reduces acne: nope nada. If you cleanse your face more than 2 times a day (providing you haven’t sweated excessively or got dirty) you are stripping your face of nutrients and moisture drying it out causing a larger build up in sebum
Hope these tips helped :3
