❥ pairing: siren!robin x sailor fem!reader ❥ synopsis: The ocean listens keenly—you should have known that. You were a curious individual, so you decided to test out an old fisherman's tale. A silver offering, a song at sunset, and a voice that hums back from the deepest parts. You should have never sought an answer—but now, the sea has heard you. ❥ cw: major character death, slight mind manipulation ❥ additional tags: second person perspective, siren au ❥ word count: 3.3k ❥ notes: haha i saw the hoyofair art... holy shit robin is gorgeous i just had to write about it. yeah uh ig this is my first hsr work. not sure if i'll write more. i hope to god i didn't mischaracterise her cuz i was just writing about how sirens usually act. and yes i know i know I KNOW SIRENS WERE ORIGINALLY DEPICTED AS HALF BIRD IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY. i was mainly basing this off on how the philippines depicted these creatures (sirena), because "sirena" in tagalog means "mermaid". so ya!! i would also like to give a special thanks to bbg @papiliotao for proofreading this for me <33 love you rei, to the moon and back /p

The ocean was no stranger to you—you had known it throughout your whole life. Since you were a little girl, staring at the shimmering surface turned into a routine. You admired how it seemingly stretched out an eternal expanse of azure blue that met with the sky’s horizon before you.
You’d dip your feet beneath the shallow waters and allow them to sink into the sand without a care in the world. The tides would crash and the waves licked up your legs. The ocean was your comfort. It was your home.
And yet, you often wondered: what laid beyond the reef?
You had come from a long bloodline of those who were masters of the sea, men and women who lived and died by the waves. Like the masters they were, they taught you everything you needed to know—how to read the stars, predict the tides, how to navigate your way through the waters to avoid getting lost. But above all, they never fail to warn you about the dangers of the deep.
Countless legends and stories have been told to you about the lives of your ancestors being taken by the same waters you had come to love. Monsters, storms, mistakes which eventually led them to their demise. However, one tale above all haunted your family’s stories.
They said the waves would often get mischievous. They led sailors’ boats further astray into the mist where the rocks waited. Among numerous creatures of the deep, none would come as close to dangerous as the ones your ancestors perceived to be beautiful singers.
They had voices like honey, sweet enough to drown out any coherent thought. They often appeared to sailors as women who were part-fish—beautiful beyond words with skin that glittered like the sea itself.
But looks can be deceiving. For those who followed their songs never returned.
However, it didn’t stop there. Some believed that you didn’t have to wait for them to find you. Apparently, you could summon them.
It was stated that when the sun bled into the water with hues blossoming red and gold, the summoner should bring a gift—something precious, an offering of silver. Toss it into the waves and wash your face on the shore as the waves slowly take it away. Hum a tune, preferably one expressing your deepest yearnings and desires, for it will attract and bring them closer. Then, wait for the sea to answer as the sun fully sets.
Old fishermen warn you not to cease your melody, for the sea listens keenly. These creatures aren’t particularly known for their patience; silence could summon their wrath instead. Keep your melody alive and listen closely. When you hear a tune drift back to you from the depths, you know you’ve been heard—the ritual is then deemed successful.
If you were lucky, a benevolent creature may grant you mercy. It was a common belief that they may offer you a kiss—one that could grant gifts and blessings. Stories claim that this kiss could fill your lungs with the ocean’s breath and grant you the power to swim as one of them.
But luck was a dangerous, fickle thing to gamble. More often than not, when these creatures appeared, these gifts weren’t given freely. If they came at all, they never left any witnesses behind. They were more of a misfortune than a boon.
Now, you were a skeptic. You weren’t one to believe in such things. They were merely fairytales to you, and you knew that the ocean was more forgiving than that as long as you didn’t go beyond the reef. Though, you couldn’t help this lingering curiosity eating away at the back of your mind like a swarm of pests.
And so, you decided to test this theory.
One evening, you found yourself standing at the rocky shore. You knew the stretch of this coast well, the rocky areas always seemed to slope faster into the deep strangely. This seemed like a perfect spot to do the bidding.
In your hand was a hooped silver earring, one from a pair you had lost a long time ago. It glinted as it caught the last rays of sunlight as you watched the sun set. While it was precious, it was merely a trinket. You could live with its loss.
This was foolish. Childish, even. Testing an old sailor’s tale? You should have laughed and left it at that.
The faint smell of the salty breeze met your senses as you took a deep breath. Your pulse quickened with anticipation—or was it fear? Either way, there was no turning back now, not after all the trouble you went through to find a trinket you thought no longer mattered and to travel all the way to the beach.
You let the earring fall from your fingers. The silver flashed briefly before the tide claimed it, and it evanesced into the water.
A sigh slipped past your lips as you crouched by the shoreline. For a moment, you hesitated. What if they were right? What if these warnings weren’t just tales after all?
No, you were here now. This was merely a ridiculous test because you had nothing to do. Nothing was going to happen. Even if it were real, you weren’t one to give in to temptations so easily. You were not exactly easy to impress after all.
The cool water lapped at your hands and you splashed it onto your face with the salt stinging your skin. A stray drop had managed to slip into your lips and you immediately spat it out, grimacing at the bitter taste that settled on your tongue.
Then, you parted your lips and sang.
A gentle tune floated from your lips. Simple and familiar, no grand notes or anything. It was the kind that was second nature to you as if it had always belonged to the waves itself.
The sun continued setting slowly, and the waters were painted with deep crimson and orange. The final note left your lips and you waited. You were unsure if you had done it right. Would anything happen at all? Did you make a fool of yourself?
Your ears strained as you listened. To keep the melody alive, you hummed the whole song over again. The last rays of the sun disappeared beneath the horizon and the ocean seemed to grow still when you finished.
Nothing. You heard nothing. You almost felt foolish.
A frustrated sigh spilled out of you and you stood up. You had just practically tossed your silver jewellery into the water to test out some absurd myth. There was no one to blame but yourself in this situation. You turned on your heel, about to walk away with humiliation.
Until you heard it.
The waves crashed against the rocks. You backed away from the edge so the waves wouldn’t catch you, but you listened closely.
A note. It rose faintly from the waters, and the sea seemed to hum it.
Upon one summer's morning, I carefully did stray…
Your blood froze.
Down by the Walls of Wapping, where I met a sailor gay.
You weren’t alone.
Conversing with a young lass who seem'd to be in pain,
Saying, "William, when you go, I fear you'll ne'er return again.
Your heart thudded in your chest painfully as you glanced at the water with your eyes wide, straining to see among the shifting tides in the darkness. And there, you espied something.
A head popped out from beneath the surface. Lilac-silver hair and emerald eyes stared straight at you. Confused, you blinked a few times and rubbed your eyes, unsure if your vision was deceiving you. But when you opened your eyes again, it was gone. The water was empty, and the eerie hum of the ocean was the only sound to be heard.
Your pulse quickened.
Had you imagined it? Something told you that this wasn’t a coincidence.
This time, you decided to be a little risky. You stepped near the edge, feeling the moss and jagged rock beneath your feet to take a closer look. Your eyes fixed on that one spot where you had seen the head.
There was… definitely something beneath the surface. Something was moving, and it looked like a fish tail. Ripples lapped gently at the water’s edge as the head emerged again.
This time, however, it was closer to you, and you could see a few more prominent features. A crown of coral adorned her head, and gills of fish rested by her ears. The same emerald eyes stared at you as if her gaze was piercing into your soul.
“Hello?” you blurted out almost foolishly. “Did I disturb your swim?”
Her intense gaze made you nervous and made your heart race. The figure simply tilted her head as she looked at you, almost with deliberate slowness as if she was sizing you up. Then, she smiled.
“You summoned me.”
A chill ran down your spine. You blinked momentarily, your mouth parting as you thought of what to say. And then the realisation hit you, and you smacked your forehead in embarrassment. Fool, you scolded inwardly. Why in the seven seas would you ask such a thoughtless question?
“I—uh—” You cleared your throat and you felt the heat rise in your cheeks. “I didn't think it was… possible?”
She merely chuckled and rose slightly from the surface, sitting on a rock just close to you. Droplets of water dripped down her face and neck, and for the first time, you could see a creature like her in full display. Her hair swayed gently as if caught by an unseen breeze. Her hair colour reminded you of periwinkle flowers; ethereal, elegant and eye-catching. The three E’s.
Her tail glistened with rich shades of violet and curled around her as she sat. Its scales were arranged perfectly with iridescent patterns that shifted in the light, creating a stunning display of brilliant colours. Were those tiny wings hanging behind her ears? Your ancestors hadn’t provided many details on these beings’ appearances.
The sight of her made your breath catch in your throat.
“Did you think I was going to leave without greeting you?” she asked, breaking you out of your trance. Her voice was smooth and soft like silk, and it almost sounded like a lullaby.
You swallowed hard. The weight of your reckless curiosity was starting to sink in.
“No…” you mumbled. Her fixed gaze on you wasn't making this situation any less frightening. The darkness didn't help either, as the sun had just set. It was as if her eyes were the brightest thing around, glowing faintly.
The sea listens keenly. You should have heeded that warning from your masters.
“I had no idea what I was thinking,” you continued sheepishly, attempting to salvage every last bit of your dignity. “I guess I wanted to know if the old tales were real—”
“Tales.” Her smile widened. “You didn’t think they were true?”
Not until now. The truth had punched you in the gut and you were left feeling lightheaded. Of course they were true.
You didn’t know whether to cry, laugh or flee. Or all of the above. Perhaps the ground could open up a hole and swallow you instead, that’d mostly be preferable.
The silence stretched for a long moment. Then, she spoke again, breaking that silence.
“My name is Robin,” she said lightly, as if offering the name was some casual gift. “And what’s yours, sailor?”
Your heart pounded in your chest, unsure if you should be terrified. However, provoking these creatures wasn’t exactly encouraged. Swallowing, you crouched down and answered nervously. “[Name].”
Robin eyed you for a moment before smiling. “[Name], how lovely,” she hummed looking down at her reflection in the water. “Well, [Name], how fortunate for you that I’m feeling quite generous tonight.”
You knitted your eyebrows together. “Generous?”
Her finger traced lazy circles on the surface of the water. “What is it that you desire the most?” she asked. “You had a reason to summon me, did you not?”
“Oh.” Shaking your head, you waved your hands dismissively. You had completely forgotten about that. “No, not at all. This was… merely a test of courage.”
“Shall I reward that courage?”
“What?”
Her tail flicked, scattering droplets into the air as she slid off the rock and sank into the sea once again. “Shall I grant you a blessing to reward your bravery?” She pressed herself against the crag and leaned in just enough to make your pulse quicken. “A curious sailor like you deserves such a gift.”
The water curled towards the rock at your feet. Had you heard her right? A gift? Something about it made you suspicious, yet her gaze seemed sincere.
When you didn’t answer, her eyes gleamed as she continued, “I don’t offer my gifts lightly, dear. A kiss from me, and you could have it all. Swim with the tide, breathe beneath the waves, see the ocean as I do…” Robin sighed and rested her head on her hand. “It’s a rare offer. One that most sailors would beg for.”
“That easy, huh.” You eyed her warily, crossing your arms. There had to be a catch.
Robin’s smile didn’t falter. “Would you rather I make it difficult?”
You blinked a few times before shaking your head. “No, I—” A sharp exhale slipped out of you.
You were going to say no. You were sure of it. So why couldn’t you?
“So what’s wrong?” she asked, watching you closely. “You troubled yourself to come all the way here and summon me. Surely you wouldn’t just leave empty-handed? Ridiculous. Why hesitate?”
The waves lapped slowly at the rock and the rhythm of your pulse quickened. The ocean seemed to stretch endlessly behind her.
Why hesitate?
The question should have been easy to answer. So many answers, so many reasons. Yet, you just… couldn’t seem to name them.
“You’re thinking so hard,” she mused. “Is it really so difficult?”
You stiffened.
Yes, it was.
“I-I just…” you murmured, sheepishly rubbing the back of your neck. “As much as I appreciate the offer, I would much rather have my feet stay on land.”
Silence enveloped the both of you like a blanket. Robin narrowed her eyes at you, putting her hand down, and her eyes were locked onto your face which made you more nervous. It seemed like she was examining you. Closely.
Did you perhaps tick her off?
Dark waves rolled in like silk as the ocean shimmered. The air felt a lot heavier. It clung to your skin, thick with salt and something else you couldn’t name. Words are unable to be formed and for a moment, you swore you heard the tide humming.
A haze settled into your mind, thick and intoxicating. The stars had just come out, and they shone in a way that felt unreal. In fact, your surroundings felt unreal.
She was closer now, humming a soft melody to like the lull of the ocean itself. When had that happened? Her cold, damp fingers brushed against your cheek which made your breath hitch.
“You’re trembling,” she spoke softly. “You're not afraid, are you?”
Afraid? No, not at all. In fact, the fear had eroded away the moment you heard her sing. There was something about her voice, something that allowed each note that spilled out of her lips tug at the threads of your heart. Any thought seemed to wash itself out as you drowned in the pools of her emerald eyes.
You felt her hand gently caress your face, inclining your head closer. Before you knew it, soft lips brushed against yours in a tender kiss. Your heart pounded loudly in your ears and your head spun as the kiss lingered for a moment, unable to bring yourself to pull away.
It was an unexplainable, intoxicating allure that had you trapped, rendering any attempts of resisting fruitless. Her lips tasted like sin itself, enticing you deeper—and you wanted more of it. Your mind melted as the world around you seemed to blur at the edges. It just urged you to lean in a little more, fearing that to pull away would shatter this utter bliss.
“Still with me?”
Robin’s voice was a sweet and sugary lilt as she murmured against your lips, and it wrapped around your senses—lingering like the taste of salt on your tongue. You nodded, unsure if you even remembered how to speak. Or think. Or breathe.
Her lips were warm. But why was the water so cold? You could feel it rise to your ankles. Then your knees. Then your chest.
Wait—when did you step into the sea?
Your body swayed and it felt weightless. Somewhere far away, you heard the tide singing and Robin singing along with it. You could feel her hands cup your face and tilt your head deeper into the kiss. A low hum rattled in your chest, vibrating throughout your bones.
The ocean listens keenly. You should have known that.
The ocean listens keenly. You should have known that.
Your lungs felt full as she pulled away. Not tight. Not desperate. Just… full.
She was still so close. You hadn’t moved, had you? But you were closer. You blinked slowly at her as she swam in and out of focus. Were her eyes glowing? Or were yours just dimming? It was hard to tell. She hummed a soothing melody that eased your thoughts.
“I thought you sailors were clever.”
Huh?
The realisation came in slowly like thick syrup, a heaviness that settled in the pit of your stomach. You were sinking. Or had you already sunk?
Something delicately grazed your cheek. A strand of hair, drifting freely into the water. Yours or hers?
…Had you been holding your breath all this time? The ocean was in your ears. Your lungs. Salt was burning your throat and your mind. Your head tilted back instinctively to take a breath as you struggled.
But there was no air left to take.
You tried to lift your legs, but they felt heavy and sluggish. The cold ocean wrapped around you like a blanket, pressing against your skin.
The only thing you could see was Robin’s face. Crown of coral adorning her head, and gills of fish resting by her ears. The same green pools of eyes you drowned in pieced into you.
She was smiling.
“Close your eyes,” you heard her say. At least you think you did. “It’s easier that way.”
The pressure in your chest was heavy but no longer frightening. It felt familiar—like the hundreds of warnings you have heard from your masters the moment you were old enough to walk. They echoed in the back of your head.
You remembered the tales, the stories. How they had lured those before you. How the sea listened so carefully to their songs they were later consumed. You remembered the warnings passed down from generation to generation. The fear it was supposed to ignite.
But now, as you sank deeper, there was no fear. Only acceptance.
Robin’s hums echoed in the depths. It seeped into your bones to your very essence. It was the same melody you heard her sing, the same lullaby your ancestors must have heard. The one they couldn’t escape. You thought you were clever. You thought you weren’t easy to please. You thought you could even have a chance of escaping. You thought wrong.
You parted your lips, perhaps to call out the name of your family, perhaps to scream for help, but your words got lost in the water. They were swallowed by the depths.
Now you understand. Now you understand why they didn’t run, why they didn’t escape—the allure was not just the beauty, but the temptation. No matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t resist it. The sailors were left with no choice. Neither were you.
The ocean listens keenly. And, like it did to your ancestors, it answered.
You felt Robin’s hand graze your cheek as she gazed at you with that deceptive, soft look in her eyes. You both then shared one last kiss. Her breath—the sea’s breath, rather—filled your lungs.
And you let it. You succumbed to what was promised eternal bliss. It was easier that way.

Departure Day
I am finally going to have the courage to write this entry.
The morning I left the Philippines, my mom was still stressed out about the weight of my luggage. I maneuvered more things to fit (would later find out my carry on was actually 3lbs over, oops!...Attendant let me slidddeeee hahah). I had been so busy de-escalating my mom that when they loaded me into the car, I forgot to kiss my Lola goodbye. My mom had sent her upstairs to grab cash so I had tip money for all the airport helpers. I feel so sad that I let myself get lost in the stress and flurry.
Our driver takes one pic of us and my mom seems annoyed because she worries about me getting to the airport. On the drive to Manila, I write my Lola in Tagalog how I am sorry we didn't say goodbye properly.
Tumblr media
I write my cousin and my aunt their farewells too. I look out into the lush green freeway and feel the weight of heaviness on my heart. I am a 100% Filipino and yet the Philippines is not completely my home. I badly want it to be and I think it starts with language (something I am hoping to improve on).
My mom is busy on her phone preparing a post about a goodbye to me. Right outside of the airport after passing so much gentrified land of high rise condos, is a barangay that isn't tampered with. The streets are narrow and the place is lively. We head into the departure zone which has many helpers in purple shirts bringing your carts and directing you to your airlines. My mom takes one full photo of me and I ask for a selfie together. I wish we had a longer moment, a moment I kept wishing on that day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We head into the Korean airlines line at 9am and it winds line a snake with 20 folds as it continues to pile. It makes me realize just how intentionally designed the Vegas airport is with mitigating every discomfort for a visitor with its efficiency. We're there for 2 hours in line (the longest I've ever been). My flight is at 12:50pm and I spend about 40 minutes waiting in immigration. I head to my gate with enough time to eat tocino and rice (my favorite breakfast meal). There are so many people on this flight and I recognize the woman who was standing in front of me earlier. I remember how pissed she was that someone paid to cut the line. Anything for a good tip with get you far in the Philippines.
I hear a few Americans talk about how they spent 1-2 weeks here and it was the time of their lives. Spending time in the province was a the time of my life, I never knew I could deserve to have: peace, quiet, and being unknown.
I look like every other Filipino here that no American attempts to talk to me. While waiting I find out my one airpod is left at my mom's. My technology mishaps feel like the ghosts were playing games with the girl they would miss.
Tumblr media
We board the plane and I help the people around me load their luggage into the overhead bin. The woman who sits next to me had no upper body strength when she tried to put it up that I stood behind her and aided her arms.
We had yet again very yummy and portioned Korean food. I will miss this about the airline. When I get to Korea, I desperately look for a nail clipper since my nail broke. I had to roughly cut the manicured nails my mom paid for when I visited. Another sign that reality was consuming me. I wandered up and down the airport for the bathroom where Koreans were lathering up their beautiful skin care routine between flights.
Tumblr media
I then head up to a food court to order some authentic Bimibap that my professor recommended. It was beyond delicious and I treasure those flavors forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While waiting for my flight, I stayed and journaled. A Korean American woman my age asked to sit with me because she was waiting for her food and there were no more chairs. I said sure. I trusted her enough to watch my things when I threw my tray. She guarded her bag from when she picked up her food to when she ate. I get it. I can be foolish about how I see my fellow humans (something I continue to shave off in my return to America).
Tumblr media
I find my gate which moved from its original spot to a smaller gate packed with children. Korean summer started and all these families were taking their kids to Vegas. I sat on the floor away by the stores with enough sight to see when I could board. I sat again with a mother and daughter who could not articulate what they wanted to eat to the stewardess. The mother was getting sicker on the flight and I shared some of my pocket tissue with her. She asked me how could I be so kind? I shrug and laugh. I knew that I am built this way from the way I was raised between parents and teachers.
I helped the mother and daughter head out first by also pulling their luggage. The escalators were broken in Vegas and the lines were long again for immigration. I felt like the airport was trying to make Vegas appear unlivable to potential immigrants. That's my theory. We stood in line for another hour and a half after arriving for immigration clearance. I had my whole trip story ready for when I would be asked since so many passengers had to explain. But they let me pass easily and I wondered if the way I appeared was more American.
We were in a secluded baggage area with free carts. I quickly saw both my big bags and maneuvered like the strong lady I am seamlessly. Coy wasn't able to help me because there was another security gate before we could reach our families. I walked out and Coy greeted me with roses. We kissed and I was relieved to live through the turbulation I prayed through in the 10 hours to get from Korea to Vegas.
Tumblr media
The mother and daughter passed me and Coy's reunion and the daughter looked surprised that I was married. Maybe she thought, how could a large Asian woman be married? hahaha, to be in America where ideas are bent and identities are explored.
This was so hard to write because someone could look at this day from travel as dull. But I don't live this life sleeping. I live it alive and see all the teachable moments and breath in all the blessings.
I aim to see my family again. I hope I do.

Original article submitted:
“Let’s stop spreading fake news.”
This is the appeal of the panel of doctors and specialists who spearheaded the freshly held health talk on cervical cancer titled #TimeToTalkAboutHPV: A health forum on HPV prevention and cancer control. Organised by the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network of the Philippines (CECAP), together with the Asia & Oceania Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecology (AOFOG), the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS), and MSD in the Philippines, the media forum aims to serve as a reminder that cervical cancer is preventable with regular screening tests and the HPV vaccination.
“We should stop spreading wrong information that cervical cancer immediately means a death sentence. We must stop encouraging wrong beliefs about the disease, screening and the vaccine,” patient advocate Carmen Auste appealed to the media.
Cervical cancer is largely preventable through both vaccination and screening for precursor lesions (pap smear at least every three years and HPV DNA testing for women starting age 30), with appropriate follow up and treatment. With access to accurate information, preventive services, and routine gynecological care, most cases of the disease can be prevented and successfully treated at an early stage.
In spite of this, cervical cancer ranks as the 2nd most frequent cancer among women in Philippines and the 2nd most frequent cancer among women between 15 and 44 years of age. Current estimates indicate that every year 7,897 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 4,052 die from the disease.
Cervical cancer develops at the entrance to the uterus from the vagina and around 99 percent of the cases are linked to HPV or human papillomaviruses. Modes of transmission include sexual contact, skin-to-skin contact and rarely, through objects exposed to the virus.
It’s a highly-treatable disease if detected at its early stages. The precancerous stage provides ample window for detection and treatment, and it could take as long as 30 years before it reaches malignancy.  However, it is one of the most common type of cancers and common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, affecting mostly young, uneducated women from poor countries.
But more recently, COVID-19 has taken a toll on women’s health as studies have shown a gap in missed routine preventative exams and screening visits. “I think the world has been focused on Covid for the past 2 ½ years and we have overlooked other health concerns,” said Dr. Anna Lisa Ong-Lim, professor and chief of division of infectious and tropical disease in Pediatrics University of UP Manila College of Medicine. “It is only recently when vulnerabilities to vaccine-preventable diseases are being noticed once again.”
Things you need to know about HPV
One life-altering issue that deserves focus is the huge burden that continues to threaten women and men, including teenagers worldwide, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). “HPV is a virus that causes a wide-range of diseases,” said MSD executive director of medical affairs for vaccines and infectious disease Dr. Mel Kohn.
“Apart from cervical cancer, the 2nd leading cancer for Filipinas, HPV can give men head and neck cancer, anal cancer for both sexes and a variety of less common but also devastating kinds of cancers,” he enumerated. Examples are vaginal and vulvar cancers, and penile cancer.
“Genital warts, while it doesn’t kill you, can be quite devastating,” interjected Dr. Kohn. “It is quite common and very difficult to eradicate. Imagine the psychological toll on the patient. Again, prevention is the best approach here.”
HPV is common. It is passed from one person to another during sexual contact. “It’s a quiet epidemic unlike COVID,” he warned. Unlike the measles that have obvious expression, “you don’t immediately see it when you meet somebody but it’s there and has been growing rather insidiously.”
The Philippines has a population of 37.8 million women ages 15 years and older who are at risk of developing cervical cancer. About 2.9% of women in the general population are estimated to harbor cervical HPV-16/18 infection at a given time, and 58.6% of invasive cervical cancers are attributed to HPVs 16 or 18.
Although some of the infections from this commonly occurring virus with more than 100 types usually go away on their own, at least 14 types of HPV have been found to be cancer-causing.
The age indication for HPV vaccines is as young as nine years old to both girls and boys. Teens and young adults through age 26 years who didn’t start or finish the HPV vaccine series also should have HPV vaccination. Women up to age 45 may be eligible for vaccination after discussing with their provider.
According to Dr. Ong-Lim, they are targeting the young ones because of their increased susceptibility to infections.
“That particular age group demonstrates optimal immune response. Also, only two doses are needed to achieve protection,” she shared.
But more importantly, giving the vaccine at a younger age ensures that they are already protected before they become sexually active. “HPV vaccines work best when given before exposure to the virus. We must try to catch that window when the immune system really responds very well to it,” explains Dr. Ong-Lim
Manila Declaration: Call to Action Against Cervical Cancer chair and practicing OP-Gynecologist Dr. Jean AnneToral mentions that the young and adult fertility study done recently, indicates that the average age Filipina women become sexually active is 18.2 years old. “Giving the vaccine at age 9-15 would be beneficial as there is no life event that exactly pinpoints exposure to HPV apart from age of sexual debut,” she said.
There will be seven to eight out of 10 women who would be exposed to HPV at one point in their life, “But not all women will develop cervical cancer,” assures Dr. Toral. The probability of HPV exposure developing into cancer increases if a patient smokes, is exposed to other sexually-transmitted diseases and has HIV.
School-based HPV vaccination
As part of the government’s effort to protect children and adolescents from vaccine-preventable diseases, the Department of Health together with partner agencies, rolls out the School-Based Immunization (SBI) Program.
The SBI Program includes measles, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria (MR-TD) and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines that are administered to eligible students in public elementary schools. The inclusion of HPV vaccination in the SBI Program aims to protect young women from cervical cancer later in life, among other diseases associated with HPV.
Under the DOH’s SBI Program, HPV vaccination is given to grade 4 based on DOH’s recommended age group to receive the two doses of HPV vaccine, six months apart, for protection against cervical cancer.
Prior to administering the vaccine, parents’ consent must first be obtained by school officials. That is why vaccination education campaigns usually highlight the role of parents in fortifying the health shield of their children through timely vaccination against diseases.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the HPV vaccination, which was formerly delivered through the SBI Program is now being shifted as part of the Community-based Immunization to be able to still deliver HPV vaccination to young girls amidst the pandemic to protect them against cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases and cancers.
Towards a cervical cancer-free future
The elimination of cervical cancer has been defined as achieving an incidence rate low enough for the disease to be considered controlled as a public-health problem; this threshold has been defined by the WHO as fewer than 4 cases per 100,000 women per year.
To accomplish this, every country must reach and maintain three key targets, within the lifetime of today’s young generation. The first is for 90 per cent of girls to be fully vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV) by the age of 15. The second is to ensure that 70 per cent of women are screened using a high-performance test by the age of 35, and again by age 45. The final target is for 90 per cent of women with pre-cancer to receive treatment and for 90 per cent of women with invasive cancer to have their condition properly managed.
Achieving this vision and each of the elimination targets will require a whole-of-society and multisectoral approach to ensure health systems prioritize women and girls. Individuals, families, communities, , civil society, and government agencies at all levels have a role to play in championing greater awareness, education, and social support.
Auste said that the Philippines is among the countries that declared commitment together with WHO to finally eradicate cervical cancer in the country by 2040, and by 2030 worldwide. “There is already one type of cancer that we can delete or ‘block’ like social media,” she humored. “To attain that goal, we must augment HPV vaccine uptake and educate the Filipinos on HPV, vaccines and cancers caused by HPV,” she said.
Auste mentioned SUCCESS ('Scale-up Cervical Cancer Elimination with Secondary prevention Strategy') project as one of the advocacies recently launched in selected barangays. Led by Expertise France and delivered in collaboration with Jhpiego and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in support of WHO, the project aims to deploy innovative solutions to fight cervical cancer in four countries, including the Philippines.
At this critical juncture, we must empower women and rally our neighbors, community leaders, and governments to take action and save thousands of lives. If widespread, high coverage of these interventions can be achieved by 2030 and maintained, research predicts cervical cancer can be eliminated in most countries globally by 2120—avoiding over 63 million deaths of women globally.
Together, let’s commit to women everywhere to end cervical cancer. ###

Everything you need to know about Spotlight Lip Scrub.
Exfoliation has been widely recognized in the skincare and cosmetics industries as an important step in preserving soft, bright skin. However, we may neglect a significant aspect – our lips – because we frequently concentrate on cleaning our face and body. The discomfort of chapped, dry, and flaky lips can make us feel self-conscious, but spotlight lip scrub is a simple solution.
I have been suffering from dry lips over the years. my lips are chapped and can't find the solution for it before. Finally, after years passed, I found the right product. Spotlight lip scrub is one of the best products that helps me to prevent dryness and chapped lips. this lip scrub is used to exfoliate lips to soften and smoothen them.

What is Spotlight Lip Scrub?
Very obvious from the product title itself, it is a lip scrub to moisturize skin and prevents dryness of the lips. Made with Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, and Honey to enhance the look and feel of your delicate lips while gently exfoliating them.

Some lip scrubs are commonly made with honey and sugar. But this lip scrub has a different formula. Made with jojoba oil that has vitamin E, helps to keep the skin hydrated, and contains antifungal/ antimicrobial properties, Shea butter that is widely used for moisturizers and honey. Additionally, here are some ingredients used in making the lip scrub; Sucrose Caprylic/Capric, Triglyceride, Butyrosphermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Polylsobutene, Beeswax, Microcrystalline Wax, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Silica Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Fragrance, Coperenica Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Water 12-Hexanediol, Honey Extract, Ethylhexyglycerin, Yellow Iron Oxide ( CI 77492).

Consequently, using a lip scrub is highly essential, particularly if you want to have lips that are light, soft, and smooth. Although the primary objective of this product is to benefit those who have a problem with their lip skin, exfoliating, preventing chapped lips, and improving the color of the lips all contribute significantly in its effectiveness.

Best Skin Care Regimen For Oily Skin
New Post has been published on https://skin-care-routine.com/best-skin-care-regimen-for-oily-skin/best-skin-care-regimen-for-oily-skin/
Best Skin Care Regimen For Oily Skin
A. Dermatologists Say This Is the Best Skincare Regimen for Oily Skin
Oily skin can be caused by a number of factors: genetics, diet, stress and climate are just a few. In essence, however, oily skin is the result of increased sebum production, which can lead to clogged and dilated pores. Although a little extra shine may not be the bane of your existence, changing the texture of your skin is not ideal. The good news is that by using the right products (and of course avoiding the wrong ones), you can make your skin look less oily. To find the ideal treatment regime for oily skin, we look for the best dermatologists Patricia Wexler, MD and Francesca Fusco, MD of Wexler Dermatology, and certified plastic surgeon Joseph Cruise, MD of Cruise Plastic Surgery.
1. Your new routine
“For good overall health of the facial skin, it is important to clean, exfoliate, moisturize and use sunscreen daily,” says Cruise. A common misconception with oily skin is that it does not require a moisturizer and makes the skin even more oily. It is not so, says Cruise. “If you don’t get enough moisturizer, the skin pays off and more oil is produced.”
2. Cleaning products
As a cleanser, Cruise recommends Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Facial Cleanser, which contains a low dose of salicylic acid to treat acne without irritating the skin. It also removes blemishes without drying out, leaving the skin soft and supple.
3. Moisturizer
When choosing a formula, Cruise should look for ingredients that contain glycerin and hyaluronic acid to help hydrate the skin and niacinamide to even out skin tone. He also recommends a formula (unsurprisingly) without oil and without silicone, so that your pores do not clog.
Jojoba oil is a natural oil made from the seeds of the chinensis plant, a drought-resistant shrub native to southern Arizona, California and Mexico. It mimics natural sebum and nourishes and seals skin moisture without clogging pores or worsening acne
Burt’s Bees Brightening Even Skin Tone Moisturizing Cream helps “even out skin tone and reduce dark spots,” says Cruise. “It brightens and moisturizes the skin with a botanical blend rich in moisturizing oils, including apricots, jojoba, grape seeds and olive fruits.”
4. Flaking
“Glycolic acid is beneficial in lotions, scrubs and creams to reduce excessive oil production and prevent clogging of the pores that lead to rashes,” says Wexler.
Fusco agrees, “Glycolic acid peels are good, as are NeoStrata Glycolic Lotion ($ 52) and Drunk Elephant Glycolic Night Serum ($ 90).”
5. SPF
“SkinMedica Essential Defense Everyday Clear SPF 47 is good for oily and combination skin types,” says Cruise. “It protects against harmful UVA and UVB rays and does not clog pores. It is also hypoallergenic and free of oils, fragrances and parabens.”
The Avène-colored mineral sunscreen offers maximum water resistance and long-lasting hydration. Cruise says it works for all skin types and skin tones.
6. Retinol
Retin-A (tretinoin) is a form of vitamin A that helps the skin to renew itself, increasing cell renewal. It is usually prescribed for acne, fine lines and sun damaged skin.
Retinol helps to “thicken” the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and scrubs for a smoother complexion. However, it is also a hero product for oily skin types: “The solution [for oily skin] are products that exfoliate, increase cell renewal and unclog pores,” explains Wexler. “Retinoids reduce sebum, increase cell turnover and improve pigmentation. They also keep acne under control.”
7. Ingredients to avoid
Cruise says that anything extra heavy and clogging your pores is not a problem for oily skin types. Avoid products that contain vegetable oil, coconut oil, petroleum jelly and cocoa and shea butter.
Fusco also warns against aggressive exfoliants, as they peel off the skin barrier and lead to increased oil production to compensate for this. And to keep things simple, Fusco should look for anything that says “non-comedogenic” on the label, which means it won’t clog your pores.
  B. A Daily Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin: 4 Key Steps
We offer products that we believe are useful to our readers. If you buy from links on this page, we can earn a small commission. Here is our process. Oily skin is one of the most common skin problems. It offers some unique challenges, like glowing skin and acne. The good news? With the right products and skin care, these problems can be less of a problem. To eliminate the guesswork when caring for oily skin, we look for some skin care specialists. We specifically asked her to share her main tips for developing a daily skin care regimen for oily skin.
The result: a simple four-step routine that you can use in the morning and evening to keep your skin healthy, clean and radiant.
1. Step 1: clean within the morning and afternoon
The most important step in any skin care routine is to cleanse it.
“And if your skin tends to be oily, you can probably tolerate more cleansing,” says Dr. Sandra Lee, also known as Dr. Pimple Popper, founder of SLMD Skincare.
“While most people should wash their face in the morning and at night, it is especially important for people with oily skin to clean their face thoroughly in the morning,” says Lee.
Even though you feel that your skin was still clean the night before, Lee says that at night your skin is busy removing skin cells and producing oil.
For this reason, it is recommended to wash with a good exfoliating detergent in the morning and at night.
She likes to use detergent or wash with salicylic acid.
“This will really help to remove excess oil and dead skin to prevent build-up in the pores,” adds Lee.
2. Step 2: use toner
Once your skin is clean and free of makeup, dirt and oil, Lee recommends that you use an exfoliating tonic that contains:
Salicylic acid
Glycolic acid
Lactic acid
3. Step 3: Treat your skin
This step will depend on your specific skin problems. However, if you are prone to acne, Lee says to use benzoyl peroxide or sulfur during the day to reduce oil production and prevent breakouts.
At night, Lee recommends a retinol product to keep pores clean and skin glowing.
Some of her favorite products in the skin care line are BP Lotion, Sulfur Lotion and Retinol Serum.
Other popular over-the-counter retinol products are Roc Retinol Correxion Night Cream, CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum and Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol Booster.
A quick note for people with oily skin: Lee likes to remind people with oily skin that they are really lucky.
“When you have more oil on your skin, you will probably avoid wrinkles and fine lines for a little longer than someone with dry skin,” she says.
4. Step 4: wet the watch in the morning and at night.
Hydration is a very important step when you have oily skin.
“There are some beliefs that you shouldn’t or shouldn’t need hydration if you have oily skin,” says Lee. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“All skin types need a moisturizer. However, if you have oily skin, you should be more careful with the type of moisturizer you use, ”says Lee.
Your recommendation? Look for a moisturizer that:
Clear
Oil free
In a watery base
Any moisturizer formulated for acne prone skin must meet these criteria.
5. Other steps to help with oily skin
Developing a daily skin care regimen that works for you is the first step in treating oily skin. Once you have created this habit, you can incorporate other, less common steps into your routine, such as those described below.
a. Use absorbent paper
If your skin seems to glow all day, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends using absorbent papers to control excess oil. To do this, press the paper lightly against your skin for a few seconds. This should help to absorb most of the oil. Repeat all day if necessary.
b. Wash after exercise
In addition to your morning and evening routine, the AAD recommends washing your face after training. This is especially important if you don’t plan on taking a shower anytime soon. Washing your face can remove the sweat, oil and dirt that can accumulate during exercise. This does not have to be a laborious four-step process. Simply wash your face with your regular cleanser and apply a light layer of moisturizer. The sooner you can do this after your workout, the better.
b. Choose products wisely
When it comes to buying skincare products, Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, founder of Mudgil Dermatology in New York, which he must choose wisely. “Avoid products with alcohol, which paradoxically can lead to increased oil secretion. Also, avoid anything that is thick or greasy like cocoa butter, shea butter and petroleum jelly, ”he says. His favorites include the CeraVe and Neutrogena foam facial cleansers.
c. Use sunscreen outdoors
It is essential that you use sunscreen outdoors with a sun protection factor of at least 30. Mudgil recommends using a sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These ingredients can help prevent the appearance of acne. For simplicity, try using a moisturizer with sunscreen every day to always be protected.
6. Summary
If you have oily skin, daily skin care is the best way to reduce rashes and control glare. Cleaning, hardening, treating and moisturizing your skin in the morning and evening are important steps in your daily skin care routine. Choosing the right products, using sunscreen, using blotters and washing your face after training can also reduce greasiness and help keep your skin clean and healthy.
