Homework for lesson 3 of #sketchingnowwatercolour - creating my master palette. Even though I usually use more colors (my normal palette has 24 pigments), I decided to copy @lizsteelart ‘s 12 color palette since I actually have all of those paints (with the exception of using M. Graham’s sap green instead of Daniel Smith’s because I just had that laying around). But, since we are tackling color this week, I decided to limit myself to just 12 colors to work on my mixing. Here is my mixed Master Palette, my new 12 color palette, a comparison of my new and old palette, and finally, the colors named. What’s in your 🎨? I spent several hours yesterday re-evaluatingy watercolor palette in anticipation of @lizsteelart ‘s #sketchingnowwatercolour class on January 8th! Going through all my watercolor tubes and seeing which mixes best with my other colors - took a lot of time and head scratching! Here’s what I came up with (all Daniel Smith unless noted otherwise): 1-Phthalo Blue (GS) 2-Ultramarine Blue 3-Indanthrone Blue 4-Payne’s Blue Gray 5-Cerulean Blue Chromium 6-Mayan Blue Genuine 7-Sleeping Beauty Genuine 8-Phthalo Green (BS) 9-Perylene Maroon 10-Transparent Pyrrol Orange 11- Pyrrol Crimson 12- Qinacridone Pink 13- Raw Umber 14- Goethite- Brown Ochre 15-Burnt Sienna 16- Quinacridone Burnt Orange 17-Yellow Ochre 18-Quinacridone Gold 19-New Gamboge 20-Hansa Yellow Medium 21-M.Graham White Gouache 22-Buff Titanium 23-Rich Green Gold 24-Sennelier Naples Yellow. Working on using the concepts taught by @lizsteelart in her excellent #sketchingnowwatercolour class. I started this piece on tea harvesting using just paint to paint the darks - but, then added in lines with my stub nib Pilot Vanishing point - and then went back and forth with the watercolors and ink. Getting inspired and watching @lizsteelart ‘s #sketchingnowwatercolour Lesson 4 on sketching with watercolor. While watching, I dove in and tested the paper in my Handbook Journal, a scrap of Fabriano Artistico 140 lb soft pressed paper, and a 140 lb rough pressed paper (I think Saunders). The Handbook paper seems to show marks the best when working on damp washes - which is good if you want to work fast and not wait for things to dry. It also seems to show granulation really well. The other woman papers also show granulation fairly well - but putting marks on a damp wash disappear. Interesting.
