Skating season is creeping in, which means I'm thinking about Canglan skating AU. For DFQC, his career and lifestyle are extremely micromanaged by his father, who is also his coach. Programs, costumes, hair, clothes, diet, layouts, interviews, schedule, literally everything. That control and abuse have pounded pretty much everything out of him except his aim to reach his father's goals. So, canon. After Xunfeng is forced out of the sport due to reasons, his dad's only hope is DFQC, so he gets even worse (Xunfeng was also given more freedom because dad didn’t see him as as promising). When DFQC gets injured, he's thus completely aimless. Hobbies? He doesn't know them.

It does become a bit of a joke throughout the fic that everyone's reaction to him as a skater was 'hot, but boring.' His skating is seen by a lot of fans as pretty soulless and 'going through the motions', although technically there's nothing wrong with it (good skating skills, good jumps, spins, etc.). Music and costumes are mostly chosen very methodically by what dad feels the judges would like most (which sadly means he does NOT get to be the fashion icon he is in canon until he leaves dad). Everyone likes Changheng more, even though he's always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

He's not based on a specific skater. Though there are certainly coaches that micromanage to an abusive level, they weren't in mind. And I can't think of anyone who skates like I imagine he does. When I was creating Xiao Lanhua's story for the fic, my model was Marin Honda. She's someone who just couldn't put it together when she turned senior, despite being an incredible talent with musicality to die for. But unlike Marin, who has remained quite famous, XLH faded into obscurity. Her coach never pushed her, and by the point we meet her, she's really just going forward on what remaining fumes of determination she has. She's in her early twenties, the point where most people have told her she should just quit.

Anyway, I want to write it, but not until Desert Moon is over.
