Visual Effects in Only Friends MV part 2

The second song on the Only Friends OST dropped today; So What? by the amazing Ford Arun. Much like the first MV for Only Friends, this one is also has visual frameworks that made me stop and stare.

Just like my first post on this subject, where I talked about the late 90s/early 00s aesthetic of the show as well as controlled voyeurism (aka we only see what they want us to see), these themes show up again here, but a little differently. Unlike the Let's Try MV and the BTS vids which use multiple different effects and transitions as well as framing a lot of the scenes to look like (possibly) 90s camcorder footage, So What? has two visual effects (I think technically three, and I'll point out why I say it this way in a minute).

The first one is the camcorder footage effect. Except that it's even different from the Let's Try MV. While the Let's Try MV has the "play" prompt onscreen and time stamps, it now, to me, feels more like CCTV video than camcorder video. The video effect on So What? is definitely camcorder footage because it is time and date stamped.

Now, the time and date stamp is February 1st, 2020 at 6:06pm for every screen it appears on, which to me cannot be an accurate date/time for any of the scenes. Several of these scenes were from episodes 4, 5, 6, or potentially yet to air. Chuem drops info about Covid in episode one and in February of 2020, we were so early into the pandemic during that time that I'm not sure she would have referred to it so casually, plus with no Covid precautions being taken onscreen it does feel the show is set currently (aka 2023).

Why this date? Why 6:06pm? WHAT IS JOJO TRYING TO SAY HERE? Is this a specific reference to something upcoming on the show? Is this date famous in Thailand for something? Did he just pull a date and time out of a hat?

Onto the second effect: the yellow text on the screen is back! It was heavily used as a visual effect in episode one, and after a discussion with @ignoranaxed I did add it to my Narrative Frameworks post where I'm tracking visual effects on the show. We discussed whether or not this was an homage or reference to SKAM Norway, an extremely popular coming of age teen drama that had an amazingly done queer season (Season three. If nothing else, stop what you're doing and go watch SKAM Norway season three. You can thank me later). The show was so popular it has been remade in Spain, Italy, France, Germany (named Druck), Belgium (named WtFock), the United States and has even been announced as a Korean (BL?) drama for next year.

Is this an actual homage? I came down on the side of maybe. I can't swear it is, but I can't say it isn't. That yellow text on the screen is iconic due to SKAM Norway, and it is used in every single remake of the show (if Korea doesn't use it, I will cry. Also, if Korea doesn't release/air it in the same way, I will cry). Leaving that aside, the yellow text is in Thai, and as yet, I have no idea what it says because my subs only translated the song lyrics, not the onscreen words. If anyone who knows Thai can help me with this, I would love you forever because there's one other thing that shows up in yellow on the screen, and it's this:

WHY AN ELLIPSES, JOJO? WHAT DID IT SAY BEFORE THIS? I NEED TO KNOW WHY IT'S TRAILING OFF. IS IT TO BE CONTINUED? THE NOT KNOWING WILL DRIVE ME INSANE.

Onto the third , but maybe not really an effect: Is Ford photoshopped in here?

I ask this because if he is (and I can't quite tell but I think maybe?) then does that mean this is future footage coming up on the show? Or, like Let's Try MV did with it's extra SandRay footage in the car, was this just shot for the MV? I'm curious to see what people think on this.

Now for the rest of the MV where I just melt down because WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS DRAMA BETWEEN YO AND PLUG, JOJO? YOU CAN'T DO THIS. Also, is this Sand hugging Yo?

hey you're a french speaker with good media taste - do you read/watch anything in french for fun? i grew up fluent in french but i'm starting to lose it, so i'm looking for recs

tbh the last french tv i watched was season one of skam france .. don't recommend. i shud probably seek out more films in french for language purposes lol but when im watching something alone one thing i often do is turn on french subtitles just for practice. a lot of times the translation is weird though like it'll come across more formal in written french than spoken english or they'll just omit vocal fillers and stuff. and the english subs on french speaking are like. i don't know. too direct in weird ways sometimes lol

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Tricky, I don't usually finish on angst. Echo (Wtfock) follows on from a very horrendous part of the show or Season 5 - Magnus (Skam) never got finished so it's been left in the midst of angst.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of them end on a happy note but Love, Henry (RWRB) is probably the happiest.

Do you get hate on fics?

I think there was a little back when I started in Riverdale but I think it more anger on their part for a topic I could have written more sensibly I suppose? I've had critique on fics now but never hate.

Do you write smut?

I've written it one time years ago & it felt weird. I loooove writing foreplay though! But I've not ventured into smut in my current fandoms. That might be something I do though, my bigender Alex fic might go into that if there's sequel.

Craziest crossover:

I've only done one and it was a Riverdale meets Teen Wolf, it was a Christmas special and they had to help reunite Santa with his reindeer. While I haven't watched Riverdale for ages, I'm still really proud of that fic!

Firstprince (RWRB) probably. Wilmon (Young Royals) is a close second atm, I'd love to write some YR fics soon. I'm still a massive Yousana (Skam) and Davenzi (Druck) shipper too. Oh and Nathan/Annalise/Gabriel (TBSATDH) - can't remember the ship name! That show got cancelled too soon & it was basically like a fix it for the books.

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I have a Teen Wolf reader insert fic with a pregnancy story line that I left on a huge cliffhanger but frustrates me but not enough to motivate to finish it. I also have my Skam season 5 - Magnus fic that I'd love to finish one day but I haven't found the plan I made for it originally.

What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and character voice I think?

What are your writing weaknesses?

Plotting? I'm good at writing scenes but writing a longer storyline in fanfic is something I struggle with.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

If you can do it, go for it! I wish I could incorporate more Spanish in my RWRB fics but alas I only got French or German at my school, I only stuck with French. Maybe I'll brush up & add some in for Henry (RWRB) or Nick (Heartstopper).

Ace of the Week #1: Maël Le Gall

Introduction to the Character:

Maël Le Gall is a character from SKAM France. He first appears in Season 11, before becoming the central character of Season 12 (SKAM France's final season).

He is a high school student who struggles with carving his own place in the world - consistently going along with the expectations of the different groups of people in his life. However, without knowledge of what asexuality is, his failed attempts at intimacy with his girlfriend made him fear dysfunction, impotence, and brokenness. We as viewers get to join him on his journey of accepting his asexuality, engaging with his passion for music, and surrounding himself with accepting people.

For many of you, I'd imagine this is your first time hearing about Maël. For some, maybe even your first time hearing about asexuality.

Why after 18 years i still dont master Dangme?

I have been married to a native speaker of Dangme for 18 years, 10 of wich i’ve been living in Ghana, where said language is spoken. So why is it that I’m still at the beginner stage?

Behold, my vast list of excuses

1. English.

I’m a Finn but I learnt English in school and by the time I met my husband i was reasonably “fluent” (very debatable term) through exposure to English language media (Finns generally consume very high amounts of media in English). I also sang in church choir led by an American lady, I had English language penpalls, read books in English and found the magical world of the internet. And then I joined an English language church because I was invited by some lovely Nigerians I met randomly on the street. So summa summarum, I was already pretty strong in English when I met my husband to be. He hadn’t learnt Finnish at that time and naturally we communicated in English. Later he did learn Finnish but English remained our common language and it always felt weird trying to speak any other language together. So I never had this big need to learn Dangme. Yeah I really wanted to (and tried to) but it never bothered our relationship that I didn’t.

2. Not living in Dangme land

Even when we moved to Ghana we didn’t actually live in an area where Dangme was the majority language. So I would hear Dangme mostly only if my husband called his parents or if we travelled to see my in-laws which happened like twice a year.

3. Lack of materials

When I began my language learning there was very few materials. I managed to get a hold of a small tourist vocabulary which was very badly done and not very helpful. But I drilled that bad boy the best i could. I also asked my husband a lot of questions but he doesn’t have a very good attitude to my language learn quest and is sort of irritated when I ask him. He is very busy all the time and super stressed so I don’t really feel like bothering him.

4. Other languages

As I couldn’t find materials in Dangme I tried other languages. I tried Ashanti twi through Pimsleur, Aquapem Twi through a book and later Fante through actual face to face private lessons. I did some French too on the side because I watched SKAM France and fell in love.

So what now?

1. Begin to bother people

I’m finally going to begin pushing people to speak Dangme to me. I have made friends with a handful of dangmes and they are much more in favor of my learnign endeavors than my husband. So I finally have some people to help me.

3. Materials

The last couple of years materials have popped up. I now have a handful of YouTube videos at my disposal and I have found a few children’s books. I have also found some academic articles about Dangme grammar. Im also now in a WhatsApp group with other people wanting to learn Dangme. That is very motivating. But the one resource I’m so exited about is a dictionary! I can now translate stuff without having to ask people about each and every word.

4. Focus

I’m going to but all other languages to hold. I’m even going to put my other hobbies on hold for a while. I really want to just do a really intensive period of Dangme studies for the next year or so. I’m hoping by the end of the year I would be at a level where I can hopefully learn more passively (like through just reading Bible in Dangme and through natural conversations. ) After I have become strong enough in Dangme I want to bring back the other languages one by one but keep maintaining Dangme. I really hope this works out.

Since I discover your blog, i love so much to read your "subtext and culture". Make me think to maybe do that for skam france, not sure its needed though.

"Subtext: So the whole subplot of the past four episodes was that the school locked up all the phones, and Wilhelm joined the little strike to get them back, pissing Simon off in the meantime, and now that they have their phones back he's not picking up when Simon is calling him? Not cool." => I think it's a parallel from the start of the season where Wille tries to call Simon and Simon doesn't answer.

"Cinematography: We're in the cursed music room, and this time the lighting is harsh and sharp, Wilhelm is in stark contrast to the rest of the room, there's no soft golden light smoothing things out, so we're gonna have an argument!" => realized recently that in that scene, Simon clothes matches the room color and I thought maybe it was a parallel from season 1 ep 6(I think it was with one of your subtext post that i actually saw it) where they're in the changing room and Wille's clothes match the color of the room and almost made him disappear.

"Culture: In Sweden, you do the practical driving test in a car provided by the testing centre to make it fair and equal for everyone. These cars all have a red sticker saying they're for driving tests." => We have that too in France but in fact we train and test on the same double-command vehicle (not sure how its translate in english, it's basically a car with pedals on both passenger and driver side, so the teacher/evaluator can control the car, in case of emergency), and that vehicle is clearly identify as training car (kind of like a cab, with a big sign on the roof).

"Culture: Kalle Stropp och Grodan Boll are two characters from a radio show for kids from the 1940's,..." => So it is a really thing, I thought it was something invented for the show to tell where is love for frog come from :))

"Blink and you miss it: Wilhelm plays the first few notes of the original Hillerska song." => Well... I blinked ;) I hadn't realizedhe was playing that.

Subtext and Culture, Young Royals, Season 3, Episode 5

Episode 5 starts sometime after August dropped the bombshell about Erik at the end of last episode, and Wilhelm decides for some reason to visit the party palace, in order to make himself feel extra shit? I don't know what's going on here.

Blink and you miss it: Hey, that's one of the clown masks they used for Wilhelm's initiation back in season 1.

Blink and you miss it: Henry and Valter are doing a class presentation on rhetorical analysis, and for some reason they chose former US president George W. Bush as their subject, which is pretty hilarious given that he was a notoriously bad public speaker.

Blink and you miss it: Instead of asking Wilhelm, who is sitting right next to Simon, how he's feeling, he writes the question in his notebook and slides it over.

Subtext: Gotta keep up that facade and bottle all the negative feelings inside!

Lost in translation: Vincent uses the word "nyanländ", "newly arrived", which is the current politically correct way of saying immigrant.

Subtext: ...but in typical bully fashion he asks the target of the racist "joke" if it was funny, and Marwan obviously lies about it as to not upset Vincent.

Subtext: Felice tries to play it off as no big deal, but she actually wants this opportunity to spend time with Sara without her other friends, in order to rebuild the friendship.

Subtext: Sara is right to be suspicious of her dad, because he is a lot more energetic than usual, and excuses his behaviour by him simply being in a good mood. It's probably his new medication that kicked in, though.

Subtext: Speaking of having a hard time showing weakness, that's exactly what Wilhelm's been struggling with by not telling Simon how upset he is about having learned that Erik took part in the gay porn initiation.

Culture: The choir is practising "En vänlig grönskas rika dräkt", a Swedish hymnal with text from 1889, but this version of the melody is from the 1930's and composed by Waldemar Åhlén. It's a very well-known summer song that pretty much every Swedish schoolkid has sung at some end-of-schoolyear summer assembly.

Cinematography: We're in the cursed music room, and this time the lighting is harsh and sharp, Wilhelm is in stark contrast to the rest of the room, there's no soft golden light smoothing things out, so we're gonna have an argument!

Subtext: Yeah, no, Wilhelm, sweetie, that's projection, that's what you are thinking about your brother. Simon isn't doing anything wrong here, he's just concerned about you being a moody asshole.

Cinematography: To illustrate how the relationship is going south, the music room which used to be full of instruments, is just getting emptier and emptier, and Simon is left standing alone at the piano.

Subtext: No, he's not feeling ok, and no, he's not interested in making up with Sara right now, because he's still angry at her.

Subtext: There are different kinds of homophobia, for example, there are people who talk loudly about how accepting they are of The Gays, but who react negatively when someone close to them comes out, because they were only fine with it at a distance. And then there are people who are ignorantly homophobic in general, but who turn out to be supportive of anyone close to them who comes out, because they know that that person isn't like The Other Gays. Shitty, but less shitty than the first group, and I think that's how Erik would have reacted had he known about Wilhelm.

Subtext: Micke is failing exactly how he described it in an earlier episode. He's on new medication, it made him feel good and like he was in control, so he thought he could take just one beer with his friends.

Lost in translation: Simon actually says "jag vet", "I know", when Sara tells him that their dad let her down and that she is sad and upset about it.

Subtext: Unlike Simon who got a cheap suit on sale, Wilhelm just has his perfectly tailored suit delivered to him by his bodyguards.

Subtext: Last episode Wilhelm picked a sport charity or something that he doesn't actually care about, because he thought it would best fit the narrative the royal court is going for. So now his internal homophobia is screaming at him to remove the nail polish, because it doesn't fit that image.

I don't know what this is: This has got to be an editing goof? This sequence of events doesn't work. Everyone else is up and about, preparing the third year's dinner with the teachers and they're even cooking the food with a chef, but it's early morning and Wilhelm is still sleeping in? Anyway, the whole thing is yet another example of how the school teaches hierarchy. As a younger student you service the older students, and when it's your turn to graduate, someone younger will service you.

Throwback: Aww, Simon made Wilhelm a sandwich, just like Wilhelm made one for Simon a bunch of times in previous seasons.

Culture: Man, early summer in Sweden is beautiful, isn't it? This was shot at Åkeshofs Slott in Stockholm, and if you do a 180 turn on that path, you'll see the subway station Åkeshov, and if you go through the tunnel under the road and then up to your right, you'll end up at a sports centre where I went twice a week as a kid for fencing training!

This tumblr is now about French school fencing! Doublé! Riposte!

Subtext: Time and time again the show has shown us how much August loves this shit, and that he wasn't lying when he said he knew everyone, because clearly he does!

Subtext: And to show how much Wilhelm dislikes this shit, he is so stiff when talking to the invited kids who are actually benefitting from his charity foundation, while August just immediately jokes around with them and is much more comfortable.

Culture: I've seen how a lot of fans think that the flower Wilhelm is wearing is a green carnation, which is a symbol for being gay, popularized by Oscar Wilde. I don't think so, that's not a thing in Sweden as far as I know. Instead, I think it's an alternate version of a Majblomma, which is an actual Swedish charity thing, where you can buy these plastic lapel flowers from schoolkids to show your support around this time of year.

Subtext: Even though Simon is there, he's being shoved to the back, because his presence doesn't fit the narrative. If Wilhelm instead had chosen to start some kind of LGBT charity, Simon would have had a much more prominent role. Oh, and poison or not, that Princess Cake looks delicious!

Subtext: Farima is expertly letting August down, who of course pretends that he's not the least bit disappointed at being excluded from having dinner at the royal palace.

Blink and you miss it: IT'S LISA! HI LISA!

Culture: Kalle Stropp och Grodan Boll are two characters from a radio show for kids from the 1940's, but they've also been featured in books, comic books, a live action movie, and animated cartoons. It's about the two titular characters, a cricket and a frog, and their adventures. The last movie was made in the 1990's though, so I'm not so sure kids these days knows who these characters are. Personally, I can't hear this song without hearing their silly character voices.

Subtext: The Queen is still keeping up appearances and lying through her teeth about how she's actually feeling.

Culture: In real world Sweden, Victoriadagen is celebrated in mid July when Crown Princess Victoria has her birthday, she hands out a sports award, there's a concert, some charity stuff, and you can sort of meet the royals or sing her happy birthday or something.

Subtext: August is repeating the excuse Farima used on him as to why he didn't attend the birthday dinner.

Blink and you miss it: That's a Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. It's only about $10,000 and change.

Subtext: Simon, sweetie, I don't think the royals have any clue as to what "the usual" means when you're describing how regular people celebrate birthdays.

Culture: Simon actually says Laserdome, which is a company in Sweden that has been running laser tag arenas since the 1990's. I had no idea they still existed!

Culture: They're singing Lambo, a drinking song for students. It's a challenge song, so while the rest of the table sings, the target has to finish their glass, correctly sing the response lines, and turn the glass upside down over their head. If you fail, like August does in this scene, you have to do a penalty round and chug another glass.

Subtext: ...before her parents heaped all of their family's expectations on her. But maybe if Felice can break free she could pursue her actual dreams?

Throwback: Remember the scene in S1E3 when Simon is practising the Hillerska song in the music room?

Subtext: Queenie, sweetie, you're not looking Wilhelm in the eyes, you're not engaging in the discussion, and the only thing you do is to talk about Erik every chance you get. No wonder Wilhelm has had enough and explodes at his parents.

Blink and you miss it: Vincent won the "Daddy pays" award. Pappa betalar.

Subtext: In this context the award just means that he's the image of a bad boy, a player. But throughout the season, August has been struggling with whether or not he's actually a bad person, which is why he's not exactly happy with the award.

Cinematography: Fuck me that's a pretty shot of a typical summer sunset. In late May in the Stockholm area, sunset happens at around 9:30 in the evenings.

Subtext: One more explanation for August's body dysmorphia is that he got bullied for being weak and scrawny when he first started at Hillerska, so he decided to start working out more.

Blink and you miss it: The reason Fredrika is outside and happens to see Sara and August kiss, is because she's trying to sneak away the bottle of wine she stole earlier from the kitchen.

Subtext: And the reason Felice looks upset when Fredrika tells her what she saw is because she truly thought Sara was over August, and that's a condition of them reconciling.

Blink and you miss it: Wilhelm plays the first few notes of the original Hillerska song.

Subtext: And to cap off this terrible no-good horrible cliffhanger episode, Simon breaks up with Wilhelm by repeating the words his mom said to him earlier in the episode.

soooo...I’ve been working on subbing the Skam FR trailer since I first saw it. It’s my first time ever putting subs on anything so it took a bit longer than it should have :/

I’ve used the word “senior” for convenience to translate “Terminale”. High school (lycée) in France is divided into three years, Terminale being the last. The girl squad + Lucas (Isak) and Yann (Jonas) are in Seconde (2nde), the first year of high school (15-16 years old). Then there is Première (1ère) when you’re 16-17, and finally Terminale, where you will find Alex (P-Chris) and Charles (William). If you’re thinking in US terms, that’s 10th, 11th and 12th grade (9th grade is still middle school for us :)).

So far that’s the only bit of specifically French culture that I’ve picked up. I’ll try and translate the clips as they come out as well.

Important Note about e5c2

The important difference between « langue des signes » and « langage des signes » In french, both words exist to describe a language, but have very different connotations. « langue » is the literal translation of « language » in English, so for example French, English, Spanish, Italian.... all of these are called « langue », because they are official. A « langage » is less... official? A coding language would be called a « langage », or any non official language I guess. For a long time in France, sign language was called « langage des signes », and it is only in 2005 that LSF became an official language, and so ‘earned’ the title of « langue des signes française » along with the recognition of the necessity for (at least some) deaf children to be able to learn in school using sign language. All of this to say, tho hard to explain, the distinction is very important, and the fact that Daddy Dearest used the obsolete term « langage des signes » makes him even more of an as**ole, and also why Arthur rightfully corrects him.
