Oh wow! Thanks! Found some illustrated Dangme books there! Thank you thank you thank you!!
my friend and i were going to study a language together and wound up having to cancel our plans due to scheduling pressures, but! through research we came across a really cool resource for reading in a TON of languages: bloom library!
Tumblr media
as you can see, it has a lot of books for languages that are usually a bit harder to find materials for—we were going to use it for kyrgyz, for example, which has over 1000 books, which was really hard to find textbook materials for otherwise. as you can see it also has books with audio options, which would be really useful for pronunciation checking. as far as i can tell, everything on the site is free as well.

tangchung needs a wangxian song moment.. tang bo strikes me as the type of guy who can play multiple instruments so he writes them a love song and plays it for chung myung and when chung myung asks what its called tang bo tells him to guess. and then they both die and chung myung never learns the name of the song until he visits the tang family after his reincarnation and sees the sheet music preserved in one of the halls titled 'tangchung'

Huh, why hadn’t i thought about mind mapping? Adding that to my toolbox, thank you very much. :)
I have not passed a1 in Dangme so ALL the books are difficult. 😅 I have to look up every damn word. Exhausting. I just tell myself that it’s ok if I get through just a few sentences a day. Any interaction with the text is a win.
I like illustrating the story. I copy a sentence and translate it and draw an illustration or snatch something from the internet and post it here. I will then return to admire it many times a day. Makes me read through the sentence again and again. Sure, takes forever to get through the story, but I’m more into intensive reading than extensive when it comes to Dangme.
I started 十角館の殺人 a while ago but stopped after a few chapters. I was able to get the gist without looking up every word and I felt that the story will be interesting. But I missed a lot of details which was not satisfying.
My vocabulary is not big enough to follow the story (mostly) comfortably. Plus, the book introduces many characters right in the beginning which made it difficult for me to get familiar with them. And there will be even more characters in the next chapters.
Now I re-started the book and changed my strategy a bit. There is no way around looking up a ton of words which is exhausting, but I hope that some of them will sink in over time. Fortunately, some parts of the book are a bit easier than others. It's difficult but I try to read at least a little bit every day.
I also started a mind map where I jot down information about all characters and locations and other important things so that I don't get lost again.
Tumblr media
Since reading this book is very difficult I’m reading easier things on the side. I'm currently focusing on 名探偵コナン (reading subtitles and watching the corresponding episodes). I also play part 3 of 逆転裁判 and I started to re-read some books I liked (I'm currently re-reading 名探偵コナン 沈黙の15分).
How do you deal with difficult books?

Ha easy because i am far from fluency in all my languages, except for English and even that, well... So: Dangme, Fante, French, ASL, GSL, Swedish.
If you could instantly be granted fluency in 5 languages—not taking away your existing language proficiency in any way, solely a gain—what 5 would you choose?

I think I need to start speaking Dangme to my cat.
being barely multilingual is dropping something & swearing in Spanish, exclaiming at something my sister said in Korean, telling one cat no in German & then greeting the other cat in Thai- while not being able to hold a conversation in ANY of them (but damn, are the two brain cells working).
