For Sam’s romantic life pre-game, this is what I picture:

• when he first moves to the valley from the city, before even befriending Sebastian and Abigail, he gets the biggest crush on Haley who, despite being his neighbor, doesn’t give him once the time of day. He picked up the habit of practicing his skakeboard tricks closer to her house than his from trying to get her attention.

• His first kiss happened when he still lived in the city (I hc that when they moved he was in his late teens). Abigail did kiss him within the first year of him arriving in Pelican Town, but they both realized quickly their connection was much more friendly than romantic and have kept it at that ever since.

• His first time was with Penny. They both meant for it to be inconsequential; she wanted to piss off her mom in a rare moment of rebellion, and he wanted to make Sebastian shut up about having done it and not him. However, even though their shared first time is clumsy and unexperienced and happens on a whim, something happens and they catch feelings. Neither of them has mentioned it ever since, but when Sam picks up Vincent from the Library, every now and then, one of them will turn into a blushing, flustered fool.

• In general, Sam isn’t the one to dwell on the prospect of romance; he’ll take what comes when it presents itself, but won’t go out of his way to find a s/o. When he does, however, he’s unexpectedly romantic, and very sweet. He’ll plan gifts and dates and play it off as low-key, but he’s not-so-secretly very nervous about everything going well. When he’s nervous like that, he’ll just start cracking jokes left and right, because he knows if he can get them to laugh, he’s doing something right.
