Cosmere Characters on Blind Dates

Last Valentine's Day, my special was a series of Valentine's Day Poems. This Valentine's Day, I'm going to randomly pair up Cosmere characters & imagine what a first date between them would be like (something I've done before...). I'm using a random number generator & my list of Cosmere characters! Let's see what happens!

(As in the past, this is truly random...except that I omitted anyone underage or anyone from the last time did this. Talking to you, Gaz, who was managed to be rolled THREE times!)

1. Lyn & Kiin

Kiin: Listen, the fact is--I'm already married. Kiin: But to make up for it, I did make you this sweet, spiced pudding! Lyn: ... Lyn: Definitely not the worst date I've been on.

2. Kenton & Hrathen

Kenton: Oh wow, you REALLY remind me of my father. Kenton: Stubborn, uptight, unyielding, rigid... Kenton: I'm out. Hrathen: ... Hrathen: All I said was that I ordered us wine.

3. Veil & Sixth of the Dusk

Veil: You know...you remind me of someone. Veil: The intense eyes, the scars, the fact that you're a hunter, the very colorful chicken you have with you... Veil: You're a lot like Mraize! Dusk: ...You remind me of a tree I met once. Veil: ... Dusk: I don't meet a lot of people.

4. Aesudan & Sigzil

Aesudan: [petulant sigh] Aesudan: I mean, you're hot 'n' all. Aesudan: But you don't look like you have the sweltering desire for power and conquest burning within your manly breast. Sigzil: That's...fine. I'm not interested in you. Aesudan: What?! Why?! Sigzil: You're married! You let your infant son be tortured by evil spren! Aesudan: Oh, like YOU don't have any faults! Sigzil: ...This is the LAST time I try a blind date...

5. Charlie & Allik

Charlie: I think I'll start off this date by ranking every glass of milk I've ever had. Allik: Oh...yeah? I was gonna show off how high I can count. Charlie: ... Allik: ... Charlie: Are we...both trying to blow this date? Allik: I-I just I have a lovely woman I'm already into! Charlie: Me too! Allik: Want to...just talk about how great our SOs are instead? Charlie: Honestly, that sounds like a ton of fun.

6. Sebarial & Colot

Sebarial: [sniffs the air] Sebarial: Hmmm.... Sebarial: I sense in you a man who doesn't quite know his place, who isn't sure where he belongs... Sebarial: A stray, one might say... Sebarial: Do you want to move in with me?? Colot: It's been 30 seconds!

7. Crow & Navani

Navani: I like dangerous women. Crow: I have within me a dangerous power that keeps me alive but will ultimately destroy me. Crow: I need a partner who will do whatever it takes to reach our goal, no matter the consequences. Navani: I made a god-killing weapon through the power of toxic yuri. Crow: Do you want to make out?

8. Silence & Hesina

Hesina: ...Wow, it sounds like you've had a rough go of it. Silence: Motherhood has hardly been easy for you, either. Hesina: Do you want to order large amounts of wine and sweets? Silence: Maybe just this once...

9. Shai & Ulaam

Ulaam: Give me the right materials, and I can make my body into anything I can imagine! Shai: Give me the right materials, and I can remake a man's soul. Ulaam: Do you want to make out?

10. Dalinar & Ialai

Dalinar: Well, this is...awkward. Ialai: [waves a hand] Just think of it as a chance to imagine what might have been. Ialai: Had we been together, you never would have burned your wife alive, you know. Ialai: I would have been right there, helping you take that city. Ialai: You also wouldn't have nearly died on the Tower--I doubt Torol would have been such a threat without me. Dalinar: Okay, but...we don't like each other. Dalinar: And I couldn't choose any path that would lead away from Navani. Ialai: Who says marrying me means no Navani in your marriage? Dalinar: ...What? Ialai: What?

Thinking about magical eugenics with some friends

We buddy read a book where the magic system was hereditary and we had a discussion on how slippery that slope is to eugenics and magical racism

It made me realize that the Cosmere doesn’t have many inherited/bloodline magic systems. We have Scadrial and Taldain as the only two planets that come to mind. Every other form of Investiture requires some type of connection to a Shard or planet, but the ability to connect isn’t related to race or nationality

Powering up in those magic systems also don’t require specific pedigrees to be more powerful

Since Mistborn and White Sand were among Sanderson’s early works, I’m not sure if this was a completely intentional move on his part

Cosmere Inktober day 27: Cage

For some reason this prompt reminded me of this Tumblr cosmere PSAs post? I dunno, this is what I came up with.

Questioner: How many different types of Aviar are there, and what do they all do?

Brandon Sanderson: This is a RAFO because I haven't even decided yet. What I decided is that there are dozens upon dozens of different kinds of Aviar. So what that tells me is, I don't want to nail down what all of them do, because if I do, then I might need one for a story in the future.

So, this is kind of how-a-sausage-is-made sort of thing. It is on a magic system like this where I'm saving to maybe talk about more in the future, I don't nail things down. When I need to write an entire series, it's something I often will, nail everything down.

But when there are as many Aviar as there potentially are, I'm not gonna do that.

So, you may imagine powers that may come to exist in the future, but I'm not gonna tell you what they all are.

Making connections as I read more Stormlight novellas and other projects

I imagine that the bird Mraize carries in SLA is an Aviar from Sixth of Dusk

The Sorceress from Tress of the Emerald Sea is likely the lead lady from that one portion of Mistborn Secret History

The Day Star from Yumi and the Nightmare Painter is likely the planet Nomad landed on at the end of The Sunlit Man

The Aethers (I assume not the same ones as are featured in Tress) and soul stamps (The Emperor's Soul) are featured in Mistborn Era 2, and a Malwish Hunter is part of the Ghostbloods on Roshar

It's all coming together and I LOVE all the references

I’m thinking of cosplaying as a worldhopper at Dragonsteel Nexus. Each day I’d wear a different cultural group’s outfit but with consistent details/accessories alluding to my place/people of origin.

Propaganda/extra information below the cut

Sleepless: I would buy a bag of cheap bug toys and repaint them to match my skin tone. When I meet people, I’d palm them a bug to “spy” on them. I’d incorporate some of the bugs into my outfits and use subtle makeup to have a few “cracks” in my skin

Feruchemist: Lots of chunky jewelry and probably the easiest to identify for other con goers

Aviar bonded: I’d just have a bird plush/puppet with me and RP a power that they give me. I think this has the most roleplay potential.

Herdazian: this is the laziest option where I’d just make my nails thicker somehow and paint them blue

Radiant: I would try to figure out how to hide my spren into each outfit. Since I’m an Edgedancer, I think I would make a prop plant that would be my spren or maybe a broach or hair accessory

Awakener: a little bit of shimmer highlight and worms on strings

Spoilers for Secret Project 3

I think it’s really interesting that as we see the Cosmere progress, there is a consistent theme popping up of the inherent threats imposed by machines, and the recurrence of the man v technology / nature v technology archetypes.

In 6th of the dusk the ones above who come bearing technology only offer it for nefarious reasons, and are trying to steal/study/coopt the avian magic that exists naturally.

In the Stormlight Archive the subplot of artifabrian-made shards poses a question of whether or not it is safe & morally right to bring into existence artificial shardplate and shardblades.

In Yumi and the Nightmare Painter the machine created by the scholars was what brought about the collapse of Torish society.

I’m sure there’s some examples that I’m missing, and probably some contradicting events, but it’s intriguing to me that as much as Cosmere societies want to advance, every time they go too far with technology it comes back to bite them in the ass. Certainly it carries a lot of parallels to our world nowadays, in which we must find and hold the line between automated convenience and the nullification of human involvement in…everything really. And it begs the question of how much can we do in pursuit of knowledge and improvement before we risk destroying the everyday magic that we already have accessible to us.
