North Star - Chapter 12

Levi remembers… Desolation and despair as far as the eye could see. That was the state of the world days after The Battle of Heaven and Earth, as Levi was transported out of Fort Salta and into a hospital on the outer colonies of Marley. He had resisted being treated at all at first, rejecting the wheelchair Gabi and Falco had found him and insisting to walk with only a makeshift leg brace and cane, but the pain was more than even he could bear. He knew his Ackerman blood had allowed him to survive and heal up until now, albeit slowly, from his thunderspear wounds. In the final battle, as he had pushed his body to the absolute limit fighting titans and saving Jean and Connie, Levi had  trusted that blood to get him through to the end. But when Eren was finally defeated and the dust had cleared, he’d sensed something change within him, something difficult to describe but felt deeply inside him. That whatever his Ackerman blood had given him was gone.

Even more so, you wonder if he’s hurting as much as you are.

Can fate and love heal two broken people? Set in the canon universe of Attack on Titan, post Rumbling, this story follows Levi as he attempts to move on with his life. Loss, love, pain, joy, loneliness and friendship are all beautifully interwoven. The sheer scale of the world-building alone is impressive, picking right up from the details of the continent given to us by Isayama. It's a must-read for all Levi Ackerman fans and those that like their fics romantic and sentimental with a dusting of angst. Read on AO3

Recently I’ve read a fic about Demon!Levi and I just can’t stop thinking about it. It’s called A Demon’s Promise by AngelDesaray. I really hope the writer will continue writing this story one day because I didn’t even get to finish it since it hasn’t been updated for so long 🥲 And still waiting for the North Star, of course, by sixpennydame.

Val, @youre-ackermine my wonderful, talented Bestie! I love this - it really helps me to envision the world after The Rumbling. I’m actually having a bit of a crisis with my next chapter of North Star, and I almost want to scrap everything I’ve already written for chapter 5 and just start again. But maybe it feels that way because I’m just having a difficult time this week.

Catherine and Levi will make a visit to Fort Salta at some point, so I will definitely use this to inspire my descriptions.

Honestly right now, it’s Tengen 😭 mostly because his speech patterns are similar to Sanemi’s, so I have to remember to really take care to separate the two — how Sanemi reacts to certain scenarios is not the same to how Tengen reacts, so I have to check myself pretty frequently 😂

What was your first fandom? Are you still in that fandom now?

My first fandom was Harry Potter. I am not in that fandom still and do not wish to engage in it anymore for a number of reasons, but it was my gateway to reading from an early age and it was an excuse to bond with someone I cherished a lot and who sadly isn't here anymore. I met some awesome friends through it too, friends that put up with me to this day! Hahaha

Which story have you read more than any other? How many times?

You know... come to think of it, I haven't read an entire fic all over! 🤔 (regarding multichapter fics). I do want to highlight the ones I've been going back for certain chapters/scenes that I love! This list shows a variety of writing styles that leave me on the ground swooning (Warning!! no concrete spoilers buuuut references to scenes):

Holy Ground by @lucysarah-c (ongoing): Lucy can pretty much give a masterclass on poetic writing and I'm not exaggerating. I come back to it for my faves: chapter 9 (aka Levi's quiet morning gets interrupted in the funniest of ways - for us readers, not for him lmao), chapter 11 (aka not knowing how to play Scrabble leads to interesting outcomes), chapter 15 (one OF THE BEST LEVI POV I'VE LAID MY EYES ON), and chapter 17 (when you can feel yourself in the scene, it's just that amazing)

North Star by @sixpennydame (ongoing): such SUCH a special story. I love coming back to chapters 6 & 7, the whole Mount Aspe arc is exquisitely written.

Spectrum by @19941117 (finished): I have nothing but praise for this story and the incredible talent of its author. It focuses on an AoT character I've never seen explored before, and has the most breathtaking of endings.

Silver Underground by @amywritesthings (ongoing): this girrrrl leaves Easter eggs everywhere so I had to go back an re-read many parts to come up with theories lmao. I really enjoy the first chapter, the pace in it, the dialogue, the tension. And the whoooole bit on the Underground arc makes my heart become pudding.

Please tell me I didn't f*** up any link hahaha.

What word or expression always makes you cringe when you read it?

Usually I cringe when I see a sustained behaviour that feels excesively out of character to me (in those cases I choose to opt out). I also feel cringe-y in NSFW scenes when intimate parts are refered to overly poetically for my taste. I'd rather have them refered to in a filthy way tbh 😂

Which fandoms do you read fic for?

Currently I'm 99% dedicated to AoT (had a YoI phase a couple years ago!). Buuuut I wouldn't mind reading some Vinland Saga stories 😏 (@atruewarrior I'm looking at you)

do you have any levi fics recommendations? i’m having trouble finding ones that live up to yours 😭🙏🏼

I WILL PREFACE AND SAY I HAVE NOT READ MANY LEVI FICS tbh i try to avoid fics of the person i'm about to write so i dont accidentally get influenced by portrayals (i'm also heavily into reading bnha fics right now, like that's all i currently read)

but

i highly rec @sixpennydame's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON fic. the first two parts are out, it's cyberpunk-y yakuza levi. it's SO fucking scrumptuous. that's my current obsession.

sailor's NORTH STAR series is also a great comfort/healing fic if you wanna curl up and get cozy.

@humanitys-strongest-brat also has a fantastic modern one shot called SHOELACES that i was giggling while reading

𝐀 𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰

On this New Year’s Eve, I found myself re-reading this scene from North Star, my slow burn, friends to lovers fic for postwar!Levi.

As soon as you arrive home, you head straight for the kitchen. Levi follows and finds you looking out of the large window overlooking Mirror Lake and the mountain range beyond. He stands next to you and joins in gazing over the horizon.

“I feel different somehow,” you say as the sky changes from dark blue to purple. “Like I’m on the precipice of something.”

“That’s good.”

You’re standing so close to him that your knuckles hit his hand. You decide to move a finger and brush it against his.

He responds by moving a finger of his own. It gently caresses the back of your hand. Such a light touch, but it gives you butterflies in your stomach.

Neither of you acknowledge the other’s movements, as if it’s some natural occurrence neither of you can control.

The sky begins to lighten little by little as you both look out the window. “So…what happens now?” Levi asks.

You’re not sure if he’s asking about the sunset or the fact that you’re both holding hands now, his fingers interlaced with yours. You decide to answer the former.

“I’ll show you.”

You turn towards him and he mirrors your movements. The warm pinks and purples of the morning shine on his face, giving him an almost angelic glow.

You lean in close and kiss him on his right cheek. “A kiss for the old year...”

Levi is frozen as you then move to his left cheek. “…and a kiss for the new.”

Your lips move slowly away from him, but you stop to look into his eyes, which at first meet your gaze. You want to reach up and touch him, but he beats you to it, his thumb moving across your cheek then down to your jaw. The butterflies in your stomach have now turned to a heat deep in your core.

It shouldn’t be this easy to care for someone else.

Lips mere millimeters from each other, begging for the other to make a move.

All it takes is the smallest of leaps for everything to change.

I made the scary decision to scrap the chapter I was writing for North Star and start fresh, and now the words are flowing!

Chapter 1

You’d met Levi Ackerman three times before he came to live in your boarding house, but you didn’t know that.

The first time was in Corsero, a port city in Marley. Martin was shipping off from here and you wanted to surprise him with a gift. You’d stopped by a bookstore to buy a book you’d been wanting for ages, but was impossible to find in the tiny village you were from, one of the small Marleyan territories in the mountainous southwest. You always asked Martin to buy you books when he was in the city, but now you could finally visit the bookstore yourself. 

You’d just spent hours in the shop, and were making your way happily down the street when you heard screams of, “Stop that thief!”, and, “They’re getting away with him!” Before you could even realize what was happening, you rammed straight into a man running as fast as he could while holding a small child. Your book and all your other belongings went flying as you fell to the ground. 

The man looked quickly back at you, his dark grey eyes showing just the slightest bit of remorse, and then he turned a corner and was gone. 

What a jerk, you thought, as a small group ran after him, no one offering to help you up. “I guess that’s life in the city for you,” you sighed, as you collected your things and continued on your way to meet Martin. When he asked about the growing bruise on your leg, you laughed it off and told him you ran into a friend. He didn’t get the joke.
