So I have a question I hope you could help with. I was wondering how long recovery might be for a gunshot wound? I see these procedural shows where the protags get shot as a plot point for an ep, but then we see them back working the next ep! I assume there's an implied time gap in there in a lot of cases, but how long might that be? There's many variables, I know but one example I'm thinking of was 2 small bullets to the chest, missed the vital stuff, but surgical removal of both bullets. TY!
Six weeks to six months, depending on their injuries, the rehabilitation necessary, and the physical demands of their job.
Here are some previous posts I’ve done on gunshot wounds:
GSW to the chest
Sucking chest wound
Trauma management and path through care
Bullet removal
One of the biggest lies fiction tells us is that there are places one can be shot in the chest/torso where the bullet “missed the vital stuff”. The reality is that there are a lot of really important “vital” structures and they’re packed in there really tight. Even if you don’t hit the heart, aorta or brain (things your character would be fairly unlikely to survive, even if it happened in an ED parking lot), hitting the lungs, diaphragm, liver, spleen, stomach, intestines, a large blood vessel, or even the femur is likely to kill them without prompt medical attention. No matter where the bullet enters, if it breaches the chest or abdominal cavity, the bullet is hitting at least one of those.
Something else fiction doesn’t represent well- most bullets go all the way through (unless specifically designed not to, and those ones typically shatter on impact, doing more damage). If there are bullets or bullet fragments retained, no one goes fishing for them- unless they’re likely to cause problems or are in a really convenient place, taking them out isn’t necessary and may cause more damage, so can be left in. Surgeries are to primarily to repair the damage the bullets caused.
With that said, let’s assume your character gets appropriate help quickly, and, if they’re in the US, good health insurance.
The initial surgery is going to be a pretty substantial one (here’s a (graphic) video of several penetrating chest wounds and their surgical courses). They’ll likely have to open the chest, which is painful and can take between 6 weeks and 3 months to heal fully. They may need a chest tube and a ventilator and would probably spend the first few days at least in an ICU. Once they could breathe on their own, they’d spend another few days to a week or two on a trauma/med-surg floor before being discharged home or to a rehab facility. Discharge usually depends on how long it takes to get their chest tube removed, be able to breathe without supplemental oxygen, and be able to manage pain with oral medication.
If the bullet hit the lung, there will be a part of the lung that will scar and stop working correctly. Depending on how big of a part this is, the character might need pulmonary rehabilitation to learn how to manage not being able to use as much of their lung tissue. They might also need physical therapy to learn how to move while their ribcage heals and to regain strength and function after the injuries and surgery.
Once healed, most employers will require the employee to meet with an occupational health nurse prior to going back to work to make sure they can perform the functions of their job safely. The more physical the job is, the longer it can take to pass this assessment.

The Alamo began as an Eighteenth-century mission in San Antonio Texas. The Alamo became the place of a historic siege of a group of Texans by a Mexican army during the Texas war for independence from Mexico. Occupied by Spanish troops, the abandoned mission was named Alamo due to surrounding trees. In December 1835, at the beginning of the war, volunteers occupied the Alamo and vowed to fight to the death at any attempt to recapture it. A Mexican army of several thousand began a siege that lasted 13 days, in February 1836. Led by Jim Bowie and included Davy Crocket, the Texan force of about 180, was overrun. Nearly all the defenders were killed. Mexican casualties were at least 600. "Remember the Alamo" became a rallying cry for Texans through the remainder of the war and stood as a reminder of the brave and honorable men who stood against all odds and fought to the last man.
The 1835-36 Texas Revolution began as shots were fired over a cannon that had been given to the town of Gonzales for protection against Indians. As the rebellion progressed, the Texians were hard pressed to find ordnance and found it even harder to transport. Subsequently, the reluctance to abandon such a precious commodity played an important role in the decision to remain at the Alamo. At Goliad, Fannin's men may have all died because Fannin was hesitant to abandon his artillery. At San Jacinto holding on to the "Twin Sisters" cannon played a significant role in the Mexican defeat.
During this period "cannon" refered to the barrel of the gun. The entire gun was known as a "piece of ordnance". Cannon were made of either iron, brass or bronze. These materials became designations that were used to denote the material of which a cannon was made. A cannon was classified by the size of the projectile it fired. For example, a six-pound cannon fired a six-pound ball. In 1830's Texas artillery fell into one of four classifications:
Guns that fired shot or shell over long distances.
Carronades were shorter barreled, lighter pieces that could fire at higher elevations. These were used defensively and on ocean going vessels.
Howitzers were short barreled weapons that could be fired at steep angles or horizontally.
Mortars had short stout barrels that fired an exploding canister shell. This canister shell could be lobbed over the defensive works of an enemy.
Guns were mounted on carriages to fitted for a specific duty. These usually fell into one of three categories.
Garrison carriages were used in permanent locations where weight was not a factor. These could be made of either wood or iron.
Siege carriages usually made of wood were used to hold heavy siege guns.
Field carriages were light weight wooden carriages designed for mobility.
The cannon of the Alamo were probably mounted on field carriages. There is some evidence that a few pieces, such as the iron 12 pound gunade, were mounted on garrison carriages. A
gunade
appears as a combination of a cannon and a carronade and was sometime used on merchant ships of the time to meet insurance requirements. How this particular specimen ended up 150 miles inland is another of the Alamo's many mysteries.
In 1836, artillery was loaded and fired in a fashion similar to the rifles and muskets of the day.
First, a pre-measured amount of powder was shoved down the barrel. Wadding was then stuffed into the barrel and packed on top of the powder before inserting the chosen projectile. The cannon was then primed by pouring powder into the touchhole on top of the barrel. Firing was accomplished by touching off the priming powder with a slowmatch that was held on a long rod called a "linstock".
Projectiles could be solid shot (cannon ball), exploding shell, grape shot, cannister or even scrap metal such as nails, horse shoes and chains that had been chopped to pieces. This method turned a cannon into a very effective scatter gun. The devastation that these jagged pieces of scrap inflicted must have been terrible and horrifying, unlike anything the Mexican soldados had faced before.
Based on recent research, we know that they faced 18 cannon of various sizes consisting of: the famous 18 pounder, one iron 16 pounder, one iron 12 pound gunnade, one 9" pedrero, two iron 8- pounders, six 6-pounders, three iron 4- pounders, another 4-pounder of either brass or bronze and two 3-pounders.
As with everything associated with the Alamo, the exact placement and type of artillery pieces is subject to debate. Most Alamo researchers/authors agree that there were:
3 guns in the chapel mounted on the ramp 1 to 4 guns in the palisades area 1 to 2 guns at the northwest corner 2 to 3 guns on the north wall 2 cannon in the lunette guarding the main gate 2 cannon redoubt facing the main gate 1 cannon in the cattle pen 1 to 2 cannon in the horse corral, firing either over or through the west wall 1 18-pounder in the southwest corner.

2020 - The year the world turned upside down
There’s not a lot I can say about 2020 that hasn’t been said yet. It’s the year we never saw coming, the year that disrupted indiscriminately, the year nobody wanted. But also it was a year that refocused many of us, gave us a chance to slow down and introspect. Let’s get into how I faired.
Goals Living on hope I say living on hope because I didn’t take any solid plans or goals coming into the year. In fact these two are the only real goals I remember I had real intentions to go for 2020: A comfortable Comrades: This was an easy goal to run with (excuse the pun) and I could never forget it. I was intent on running a race (any race) without any uncertainty or unease - I wanted no ‘Bafana Bafana playing in cup competition calculation’. Ironically my Comrades qualifier was uncertain to the point of receiving the race results. But I quickly got focused and became the fittest I have ever been in my lifetime by end of March, just before the lockdown. Needless to say it’s been a struggle to get back to that point since we were allowed to run freely again. I comfort myself by reciting the script ‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former glory’. It’s getting there. Flow: For the first time I prayed for vision for my family and not just for myself to carry into the year. This year we focused on FLOW. We were to consider and acknowledge our blessing, but unlike the dead sea, we would be the vessel that allows blessing to flow through us. It was to be a year of generosity and kindness. I haven’t been kind to myself and expected that we could have done better, but objectively, we did pretty well. I’ve seen even The Boy intentionally exercise flow. With some of the idle cash from services being cancelled due to Covid, we were able to make charitable donations. However the most meaningful for me was being able to help and support family members. For the first time the phrase ‘charity begins at home’ made sense to me. Spiritually healthy: This was more of an implicit goal than anything, and I’m glad the family managed to stay plugged in to church week in week out. It would have been so easy to fall off this year (and perfectly reasonable), but we’re still as committed. We pray, we engage and still 100% team Jesus.
Under lockdown Theoretically, I’m team 5am, team crush the day, team goaldiggers. So it goes without saying that the moment we got ‘down time’ in the form of a lockdown, instead of taking care of my mental health I became obsessed with taking advantage of the extra time and doing EVERYTHING I previously thought I couldn’t because time. But that’s all in theory. In reality I failed almost across the board - but I now know it is as I said above: no solid plans or goals, nothing written down, nothing committed to. But at least: New garden: Ever since living on my property, we’ve had a constant struggle with the grass patch in our front yard. It wouldn’t grow evenly across the front yard. I resolved to fix it once and for all so that my children can play comfortable on the grass at the end of the year. Mission accomplished. On Christmas day we had the kids playing on the grass with a portable pool. Fantastic. Fit and healthy: I also resolved to keep my family fit, healthy and Covid free. I also hoped to get a six pack (or at least a flat tummy) but that didn’t happen. All in all everybody is now settled into a fitness regime, we take vitamins and get some sun time regularly and know how to keep healthy. But also part of health was the mental aspect. I think we’ve done well in that respect, everybody is still alive and we’re still a loving family.
After lockdown So I never went back to the office since the first lockdown and have been working from home ever since. This does create a little extra time for me and so I’ve been able to try get my running back on track and start swimming. Sub-25: In September I started a running programme to try run a sub-25 minute 5k. I really think I was progressing well, at least until a heart matter brought everything to a grinding halt (see below). But yeah, I consider this an achievement. Swimming: I now also go for swim lessons during lunch. This is something that’s been outstanding all my life and just starting is that big of a deal. But also unfortunately it was also disrupted at some point by an ear issue (see below, hahaha). I’m back at it though and progressing really well. I now just need a bike and we’re on our way to Iron Man.
Another day at the hospital Following from my first one last year, I really hope this doesn’t become a pattern. A heart matter: Anyway, this was a crazy story. My insurance asked for new medicals (routine), but the checkup picked up my heart was irregular again. This finding would trigger an absurd chain of events that landed me in a hospital bed for an Angiogram operation. And after all of that they found... wait for it... nothing. So I’ve been diagnosed with what they call ‘athletes heart’. I’ve spoken about this heart issue a few times here so, I hope never to speak about it again. (This is the matter that stopped my speed running ambitions). Specialists even: Though this was not an admission, I also ended up in the rooms of a specialist because of an ear infection. Yey, this one was painful and even more so when the specialist recommended a theatre procedure. Fortunately the meds cleared my ear. LOL. (This is the issue that disrupted my swimming).
Social adventures Because of the strict regulations, we were required to be socially distant this year. I want to say this suited me just fine but it’s something I’ve been trying to break out of for years, so much so that I’ve listed my social exploits as achievements on this platform. Throughout the year we’ve done the best we can to keep the WhatsApp, Zoom and Houseparty meetups going. But the moment we got the chance to socialise in person, we actually socialised, so much so I consider these outings ‘adventures’. Kuruman: By far the best thing I have done in a few years. Wife and I were on our way on a Friday night to a Sunday funeral in Bloemfontein, but at an uncharacteristically last minute we changed direction to go see my little brother in Kuruman who was having a birthday weekend bash. Man Kurara was lit and it was so great to spend time with family who came out to support him. We eventually went back to Bloem on Sunday morning and all was fine. Even after the funeral we klapped some drinks with the husbands of the Wife’s friends, was a cool hang out, at the funeral. Pati’s grad: In the spirit of intentionally badly calculated decisions, we went to Pati’s house for her graduation party and ended up staying overnight having the time of our lives. Yay! Wolfpack annual getaway: Once again this seemed like it would never happen, but fortunately me and the Wolfies managed to get out town (albeit to Haarties) for a weekend to go drink and once again attempt to play poker. I can’t say it was the best one yet, but it’s up there.
Work I really thought I was having a brilliant year at work. I really did. I put in the hours, I put in the sacrifices and gave everything I had towards it. But it was not to be seen. To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement. But because this has been the year of introspection, I see that much of the effort given was misdirected. But over and above that I think it has opened my eyes to what is important, and work is not important. My family is important. My spiritual, mental and physical health are important. Work is important, but not more than these.
The rest It’s really hard to account for this year, especially between April and September as that time, although felt like the longest time in the history of time, went by quickly in retrospect. I’m left here left with shoulda coulda woulda’s. But: Wife’s birthday: was awesome as we went bungee jumping in Soweto and for massages at some exclusive rich people boutique. I grew a beard: As in I had a beard the whole year. Festive was great: with all my kids. I made every effort to make sure everybody feels included, loved and appreciated. Depression: is becoming a thing with me and my seasons are becoming longer and more frequent. Sure depression was inevitably a 2020 thing, I had hoped not to have it so hard. The issues in the Wolfpack are making things difficult to help figure and address issues. I suppose I need a new group of people to walk me through this.
Ok. So first of all I’m writing this on the 14th of January 2021 instead of the usual 31st of December. I’ve been struggling to commit to sit down and write my thoughts, goals and plans and because of that I’m totally convinced this is part of the reason why things didn’t go really well for me in 2020. If one thing I do in 2021, is get back to the habit of taking time to write, express, review and expect - the rest will follow.

Lightning and Thunder ( Seokjin/OC)
Dear Diary ,
Baby is the size of a cherry now that I’m 9 weeks pregnant. This week, me and baby have made two big accomplishments: I’ve made it to month three, and baby's no longer an embryo—now baby's a fetus.
I have headaches and just a little bit of nausea. My mood swings aren’t terrifying yet, but i do feel like crying occasionally.
I miss my mother though.
Is it because I’m becoming one myself?
I wish she would forgive me.
Chapter 2
“We’re going to need three photos, a letter of consent from your parents and of course a full physical report. And in addition, you’re going to have to wait at the least for six months and three weeks before a slot opens up. I’m really going to have to advice you to find accomadation elsewhere.”
I smiled politely, gathering up the rest of the files and slipping them into my bag before slowly raising myself off the chair. The moment I did, my head spun , the sensation foreign and frightening.
Dizziness in early pregnancy occurs because of the hormones that get dumped in your blood stream causing your blood vessels to dilate. This makes your blood pressure go lower than normal and you feel faint...
it’s normal... don’t get scared...
i stood perfectly still, breathing carefully, evenly, trying to stay calm and not just freak out all over the place. i wasn’t even twenty yet. i was too young to go through this alone, i thought miserably.
And it was stupid but the prospect of raising a child in the real world scared me far less than the prospect of being pregnant.
I could barely keep myself alive on most days, often surviving on coffee and french fries and burgers. How was I supposed to raise a child inside me? I was a reckless college student who ran on four hours of sleep and pretty much ran around like a maniac all day.
The chances of my child staying safe inside me were very feeble.
Sighing, I took a deep breath and finally steeled myself.
“I’m pregnant.” i told the lady bluntly.
She recoiled a little, shocked.
“I.. Sorry?”
“i’m pregnant. i have nowhere to go...i need a place in the dorms.” I said softly.
She took a deep breath .
“Are you married?” She said casually.
I bit my lips.
“No.”
“in a relationship?”
Oh, God.
“No.”
She looked up then and surprisingly, there was no judgement . just sympathy.
“And the father?” She said gently.
i considered that for a second.
“ Look, I don’t know who you are ,i’m not going to take responsibility for some one else’s child, get away from me...”
“He’s... not in the picture.” I said softly.
She gave me a shake of her head.
“Look, there’s a clause for expecting mothers , it will give you a basic insurance for all your pre natal check ups and also help me bump you up the list for the dorms...”
I felt my heart expand in relief.
“Really? Thank you-”
“But...” She held a hand up and I blinked.” Your baby’s father is going to have to co-sign the documents. I’m sorry , that’s the way it is.”
I blinked foolishly.
“but... why? What does he have to do with me needing help?” I said desperately.
“i’m sorry honey, i really don’t make up the rules. You could even find a friend or someone else to sign . But said person would be recorded as your baby’s father in his/ her birth certificate as well.”
I scoffed.
“No one is going to sign a form like that!”
“I’m sorry.”
I sighed.
“Thank you for your help.”
I left the office with a pounding headache.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kim Seokjin’s office was on the fifth floor of the Medical Sciences building , right next to the sprawling Seoul Multi Specialty Hospital and after wandering up and down a few corridors , i learned that Mr. Kim Seokjin was in fact, Dr. Kim Seokjin, and doctor not just in the sense that he did his PhD , but because he was honest to God, a-stick - a- needle- in -your- arm, listen-to-your-heartbeat kind of doctor.
And a pediatric surgeon at that.
I knocked on the bright , creamy white door set into a matte finish wall in pink and his calm voice called out, ‘ Come in’ about a minute later.
His eyes went wide wide with surprise when he caught sight of me.
“Yeri? What a pleasant surprise. Come in..Come in..” He stood up, pushing some of the files away before stepping back from his chair and coming around to pull the chair out for me.
I was such a sucker for politeness and my heart gave a traitorous lurch.
“Uh.. Yeah.. Sorry Dr. Kim. “ i said awkwardly, settling down on the soft chair , sinking into the cushioned warmth. The room was painted in a nice peach with posters of popular cartoons. Seokjin himself looked like something straight out of an anime, dressed in a snow white shirt and coal black slacks, a black tie hanging loose around his neck, his coat slung over the back of his chair and his stethescope around his neck.
I stared for a second, a purely selfish indulgence because honestly, it’s such a waste : not staring at someone like Seokjin who had clearly been sculpted by some higher deity for the sole purpose of blessing human eyes.
“uh.. Yeri?”
Apparently, i’d been staring for more than a second and now Seokjin looked a little alarmed, rubbing the back of his hair and ruffling messy blonde hair as he stared at me in confusion.
“Oh. Yeah. I was just wondering if i could talk to you about something. “ i said nervously. It had taken a lot of self pep-talk to pluck up my courage but i was really desperate at this point. i needed a place to stay.
“Shoot. But first things first... How are you feeling?”
“You do realize i’m not here to consult you, Dr. Kim.” i rolled my eyes.
He flushed and smiled sheepishly.
“Sorry... force of habit.. Go on then, what’s bothering you?” He said brightly.
I quickly explained about how Taehyung could help me out
“if you.. if he wants me to sign something to say i won’t approach him again after the baby is born or stuff, i’ll be willing to do that. He doesn’t have to get involved in anyway. i just.... I really need a place to stay and if he signed this it could be a great help.” I said , a little desperate.
Seokjin flipped through the forms with a thoughtful look.
“I’d approach him myself but the last time he got really mad.” i whispered.
Seokjin looked up then, sympathetic.
“I’m sorry about this whole mess , Yeri. Taehyung’s been really diffcult right?” He said thoughtfully.
i shook my head quickly.
“I’m not blaming him or anything. i mean, he says he really doesn’t remember and honestly, I don’t want to wreck his relationship or anything. It’s just that i really need a place to stay and-”
“My offer still stands you know. You can stay with me, till the dorms open up.” Seokjin said firmly and I was momentarily thrown.
“That’s... You’re my professor. “
Technically not mine. He was a guest lecturer for the Medical students but still, everyone knew Seokjin.
“ Like , i said. it won’t be a problem. i keep very busy hours. I won’t even be home except when I’m in to change my clothes or stuff. You’ll have a place to stay . At least until you get a place in the dorms.”
He smiled expectantly and i suddenly felt mildly guilty for refusing him so many times.
“Uh... Well, if Taehyung doesn’t agree to signing the forms, I’ll consider it.” I said finally , mostly out of politeness.
“I’ll try my best to convince him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of course , Taehyung did not agree.
Not that I expected him to . But still, it stung. I did remember that night . Most of it. And I was pretty certain that he had been the one to approach me. And i’[d just been one of those poor besotted fools, flattered that someone as beautiful as kim Taehyung was paying attention to someone like me and i’d pretty much bent to his will without putting up any fight.
Which apprently was something both the Kim siblings were capable of doing because it was 6.30 PM on a Friday and Kim Seokjin stood in his Doc Martins and his Gucci silk shirt, looking drastically out of place in my tiny apartment.
“Are you sure you need all these figurines?” He wrinkled his nose, picking up one of the tiny porcelain princesses from the tea party set.
“Yes, please don’t drop them.” i said primly.
i was busy packing all of my clothes into my suitcases, pulling off the sheets off the bed and folding my favorite blanket , dropping them into the seven or so cardboard boxes that I’d managed to procure from one of the shops outside campus. The man had been about to toss the boxes and i’d just asked him for them, thinking they would help me move my things from my apartment to Seokjin’s.
“Don’t lift that!” Seokjin called out and i immediately froze from where i was bending over to lift a bronze vase with paper and colored tin foil flowers. I straightened curiously and he came over tutting.
“You don’t do this.” He bent over in half, hands almost touching the floor. “ You do this...” He crouched low and smiled at me.
“Why? Because it’ll press into the baby?”
“Not at all. Your baby is safe inside the amniotic sac and it’s going to take lot more than you bending over to harm him or her but this will just make sure you don’t fall over something.” He smiled and straightened again.
“ Fine .” I said stepping back as he casually lifted the heavy vase and placed it in one of the boxes.
Once everything was packed, Seokjin smiled brightly and carried the heaviest box.
“Ready to move into your new home?” He smiled.
I couldn’t help but smile because his was so dazzling and infective.
“Okay.” i said softly.

Ten things to know about booking a deep sea fishing charter in San Diego!
Before you book a charter, here are the ten most important things to think of when choosing the who, what, where, when, for your next private or open party deep sea fishing trip in San Diego.
#1 LOCATION - Our six-pack sport fishing boats depart from San Diego Bay, Point Loma, and Mission Bay
San Diego has, without a doubt, some of the best saltwater offshore deepsea fishing in the world. We have access to highly sought after Pelagic species and many species that do not go further north. We also have full access to Mexican waters, which allow us to depart from San Diego, and fish all the way down past Ensenada, including Todos Santos, The Coronado Islands, and all of the outer bank spots you can think of. Just look at this map of deep-sea fishing spots just outside of San Diego Bay, Point Loma.
#2 Type of Fishing - Local, Deep Sea, Offshore, Multiday, Pelagic, Trolling, Kite, Bottom fishing?
There are many different types and styles of fishing, and it is important to let us know what you are looking for. We are familiar with all popular methods for catching, from using kites and helium balloons to trolling the Rapala. All you have to do is let us know what you have in mind, and we will make sure you get what you want. Or if you prefer, you can tell us your target species and we can recommend the best method. We just don't want you to get stuck on a local half day Rock Cod trip when what you really wanted was deep sea Tuna fishing.
#3 Group Size - Private or Open Party?
One of the most important questions we will ask you is how many people are in your group? If you have 2 or fewer people, we will recommend for you to hop on one of our OPEN PARTY GROUPS or one of our smaller FOUR PACK CHARTERS. For groups that are four to six people, we will recommend one of our six-pack PRIVATE charters. So basically, you need to know how many people are in your group and if you would rather join others, or have a private boat all to yourself.
#4 Trip Duration - How long do you want to go out?
Our company offers 1/2 day (6 Hours), 3/4 day (9 hours), full-day (12 hours), 24 Hour, and MultiDay Trips! Depending on the time of year, species sought, budget, and the number of people, we can figure out what is the best trip for you. For example, if you are looking to target BLUEFIN using the kite fishing method, you will definitely need to choose a trip longer than 24 hours. Most of the time, Bluefin is the furtherst range fish we will chase, and we will need the longer duration trips to take us all the way out to the outer banks, which is where they will hang out. Alternatively, if all you want is to go Bass fishing, a local half-day trip is all you need.
#5 Targeted Species - What kind of fish are we hunting?
Some of our customers just say, “Take me fishing!”, other customers know exactly what they want. Some of our most popular species are Bluefin, Yellowfin, Yellowtail, Dorado, White Seabass, Rock Cod, Halibut, Lingcod, Calico and Sand Bass. Really, the list is too long to put in this post, but these are good examples of the kinds of fish you can hunt on our trips. Some of these fish are seasonal, and others are prevalent year-round. There are also Fish & Game laws that must be adhered to about the season for each fish. Let us know your preference!
#6 Weather Forcast - Swell, Wind, Water Temp, Conditions
First things first, we have a 100% refund policy for bad weather, so please book with confidence. That being said, different people have different tolerance for rough seas. On half-day trips, if it gets rough, we can always fish in the bay for Halibut, but on the offshore deep sea fishing trips, we are committed once we go, so we have to be certain the weather is favorable for our trip. We highly recommend WINDY.TV and NOAA to see more marine-oriented forecast. The last thing, you will get a call from your Captain or me about 7 days out with a general forecast for the weather on your trip, and then again the night before.
#7 Size vs. Speed, and Type of Vessel
We have a few boats to choose from, both small and fast four pack vessels and larger, slower, and more comfortable six pack vessels.
If you have 5 or 6 people you will want to stick with our larger boats, so as to ensure that everybody has plenty of room and a fun time is had by all. If you have four passengers or less you may want to consider the Avery Rose or the Kraken. These options are well suited for a smaller group who wants to haul ass to the fishing grounds, catch fish, and haul ass back. Great for when the deep sea fishing is best 50 miles offshore but you only have 12 hours to fish.
#8 Amenities - The Equipment of the Hunt
I know some fisherman that would go fishing all day without a bathroom and I know some fisherman who refuse to go out on less than a 50ft fishing yacht. I am sure that you are somewhere in between. All of our boats have bathrooms, by the way! Now please take a look through the fleet and find a boat that's right for you. All of our deep sea fishing six-pack class vessels have a full galley, multiple bathrooms, generator for full AC power at sea, refrigerators, and sleeping arrangements for six. Our smaller boats have less amenities, ask us for details if you have any questions, or see the pictures on our fleet page. Please let our staff know if you are looking more for comfort (more expensive, less fishing time) or more for speed (less expensive, less comfortable, 4 maximum passengers, and more fishing time).
#9 What’s included and what’s not!
Our company provides the following on every single deep sea fishing charter:
Customer Concierge - Someone you can call with any questions.
Boat - Commercially insured, USCG Inspected, Fish & Game #’ed.
Captain - USCG Certified and Licensed Captain
Crew - Deckhands, and other staff as required.
Fuel - All Fuel is included.
Live Bait - Anchovies, Mackeral, Squid, etc.
Water, Soda, Ice.
Free fish cleaning. (Please tip the crew).
On any trip 8 hours or more, one meal is included.
On any Full Day or Multi-Day trip, 3 fresh meals provided / day.
On any private charter, rod and reel rentals are included, on open party charters rods and reel rentals are $20/person.
What is not included:
Fishing License (U.S. or Mexico)
Bio Braclet (If fishing the Coronado Islands, Mexico)
Alcoholic Beverages
Things you should probably bring:
Windbreaker
Sun Block
Sunglasses (preferably polarized)
Waterproof shoes (or plan on getting wet socks)
Pocket Knife (very handy item)
10. Total Cost
Yes, its true, private charter deep sea sport fishing is more expensive than hopping on one of the big landing boats with 50 of your best friends, but you will have a much better time. When you come fishing with us, its like going out on your own boat, just friends and fishing! We will match or beat any price from a licensed and legitimate operation. We have some of the lowest prices for any six pack operation in San Diego Bay, and our ratings show that you still get great service too!
We hope you enjoyed reading our top 10 thoughts about chartering a deep sea offshore fishing expedition with us! Feel free to give us a call if you have more questions at 619.508.7823!

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 5/20/2019
Good MORNING #realdreamchasers! Here is The Chase Files Daily News Cap for Monday 20th May 2019. Remember you can read full articles for FREE via Barbados Today (BT) or Barbados Government Information Services (BGIS) OR by purchasing by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
BLP MARKS ONE YEAR IN OFFICE – Hundreds have packed the pews at the James Street Methodist Church to worship and celebrate with the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) which is celebrating its first year in office. During a short address, Prime Minister Mia Mottley thanked God, her Cabinet ministers, their families and the people of Barbados. She said support was needed in the past year but reminded them all hands still needed to be on deck going forward. In May 2018, the BLP won all 30 seats in the General Election. (DN)
DOOR OPEN FOR DONVILLE – If the embattled Donville Inniss is interested in representing the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in St James South again, he will be welcomed back with open arms – once he is proven innocent. But he will have to be interviewed by an executive board before being presented to the party for consideration. Inniss, the former representative for the constituency, lost his seat to the Barbados Labour Party’s Sandra Husbands in the General Election last May 24. Shortly after, the former minister of commerce and international business was arrested in the United States on money-laundering charges. He is accused of accepting bribes from a Barbadian insurance company and then attempting to launder US$36 000 in illegal payment using the “US financial system”. (DN)
BARBADOS AND ANTIGUA TO DISCUSS LIAT SHARES - Barbados will not be negotiating LIAT’s future direction in the public domain, Prime Minister Mia Mottley has reiterated, in response to reports out of Antigua and Barbuda that her Government has agreed to sell its shares to St John’s. Speaking on his radio station on Saturday, Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Mottley has said yes to selling “a significant portion” of Barbados’ shares in LIAT to his government. Earlier this month, the Browne administration issued a statement from a Cabinet meeting which said, “Prime Minister Gaston Browne indicated to the Cabinet members that he has written to Prime Minister Mia Mottley on the LIAT restructuring plan.“An offer was made for Antigua and Barbuda to acquire the LIAT shares owned by Barbados, through a take-over of the liability of Barbados to the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)”.This afternoon, Prime Minister Mottley’s Press Secretary Roy Morris confirmed that Barbados had received the letter but made it clear that Mottley would not be drawn into making public comments on the matter. “PM Mottley’s position is that Antigua has made an offer to Barbados regarding its shares in LIAT, and Barbados has responded by inviting [Prime Minister Gaston Browne] to send a team to Barbados to talk,” Morris told Barbados TODAY. “In the meanwhile, Barbados will not prejudice those talks by making any further statement on the matter, ” he added. Antigua Newsroom, an online news outlet, reported that Browne did not give an exact number of shares Barbados intended to sell, but said Mottley indicated that Bridgetown wanted to retain “at least ten per cent of its shares”. “The intent is not to exclude any country from participating in LIAT. In fact, as far as practicable we would want to broaden the shareholding in LIAT,” prime minister Browne said. He added that he was “quite happy that they [Barbados] will maintain a shareholding position”. Browne further disclosed that a negotiating team has been established, including MPs Lennox Weston and Sir Robin Yearwood as well as a representative from the Ministry of Finance. He said the decision was in the best interest of the Antigua and Barbuda economy. Last Wednesday, at the annual luncheon of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC), Prime Minister Mottley said she was primarily focused on ensuring reliable and affordable regional transport, as she confirmed receiving Antigua and Barbuda’s expression of interest in purchasing her country’s shares in LIAT. “Let’s just say we agree on the mission, and the mission is that there must always be reliable affordable access for travel in the region as there must be nationally. And I can assure you and the country that we are working on this every day. “But you also have to take the reality of an existence as you find it and then determine whether the modality that you have is the best mechanism by which to deliver on that objective,” she said. (BT)
BCC TUTOR QUITS – Reverend Reginald Knight has called it quits. The part-time tutor at the Barbados Community College (BCC) has decided to withdraw his services as a tutor in ethics and citizenship, six days after being embroiled in a controversy over leaked exam results at the Howells Cross Road, St Michael institution. Answers for the ethics and citizenship exam were leaked to scores of students last Tuesday, forcing the BCC to reschedule the test two days later. “It was a mistake. I have apologised to the principal and the registrar,” a contrite Knight told the NATION in an exclusive interview last night. “While they understand how the matter happened, I personally did not wish to be seen, or to have done anything that would have brought the college into disrepute. I have tendered my resignation, and it should reach the college tomorrow (today). (DN)
DE-VERNE KEVIN SCANTLEBURY SLAPPED WITH CRIMINAL CHARGES – Detectives of the Major Crimes Unit have arrested and charged De-verne Kevin Scantlebury in connection with a serious matter which occurred on May 17. Police say Scantlebury, 25, of Clement Rock, Airy Hill, St Joseph, has been charged for offences including: possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of 11 rounds of ammunition, possession of cannabis, and intent to supply cannabis He is scheduled to appear at the District B Magistrates’ court on Monday, May 20. (BT)
THREE CHARGED IN MILLION DOLLAR DRUG HAUL – Three St Michael men are scheduled to appear in court today, charged in connection with the seizure of more than $1 million worth of cannabis. They are Christopher Dave Johnson, 36 years, of Martindale’s Road; 35-year-old Malo Anthony Edwards of Taylor's Gap, Martindale's Road and Colvin Ishmael Brathwaite, 47, of Brandons Main Road. The trio is jointly charged with possession of cannabis, intent to supply and trafficking. Police were acting on a tip when members of the Marine Section and the Barbados Coast Guard intercepted a fishing vessel 27 miles off Needhams Point, within the island’s territorial waters. They discovered 16 polyethylene bags all containing vegetable matter suspected to be cannabis. The bags weighed about 300 kilogrammes and the contents have an estimated street value of $1 210 400. Johnson, Edwards and Brathwaite are all scheduled to appear at the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ court. (DN)
VINCENT KOMPANY LEAVES MANCHESTER CITY TO BECOME ANDERLECHT PLAYER-MANAGER – Vincent Kompany says joining Anderlecht as player-manager is the "most passionate yet rational" decision he has made after announcing he has left Manchester City. The 33-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Belgian club after 11 years at Etihad Stadium, eight of which he spent as club captain. Saturday's 6-0 FA Cup final win over Watford was Kompany's final game for City, after winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups. In an open letter on Facebook, Belgium defender Kompany said leaving City "doesn't feel real". He defines the essence of the club. For a decade he has been the lifeblood, the soul, and beating heart "Man City has given me everything. I've tried to give back as much as I possibly could." In a second letter released hours later, Kompany announced his move to Anderlecht, who said his arrival marked the "return of the prince". "I want to share my knowledge with the next purple generations," said Kompany, who first joined Anderlecht at the age of six. "With that, I will also put a bit of Manchester in the heart of Belgium. Centre-back Kompany joined City from Hamburg as a defensive midfielder in 2008 and was named club captain three years later. He scored his final goal against Leicester on 6 May, a brilliant strike from 25 yards that was voted goal of the season on BBC Match of the Day. That victory took City to within one win of the Premier League title, which they sealed on the final day of the season with victory at Brighton. (DN)
ADVENTISTS SPRUCE UP ISLAND’S BUS TERMINALS – The East Caribbean Conference of Seventh Day Adventists has teamed up with the Barbados Transport Board to paint the terminals at Fair Child Street, Princess Alice Highway and Speightstown. Last evening, church members got down to work at the Fair Child Street Bus Terminal. Director of Community Services and Personal Ministries Departments Pastor Dayle Haynes told Barbados TODAY it’s all part of the church’s GLOW (Generosity, Love, Outreach and Wholesomeness) project. “We want to embark on reaching out to our community and helping,” Haynes said. “Last year we painted 50 homes for the elderly and the needy in Barbados.” (BT)
CROP OVER LAG –Some bandleaders are contending that Crop Over is losing its appeal, and fear that in a couple of years there will be a seriously scaled down version of the sweetest summer festival. Veteran leader of Kontact Kadooment Band, Anthony Layne, told the NATION he was seeing Barbados, already “lagging behind” Trinidad, being overtaken by Jamaica Carnival. “Right now I am not seeing many local people opting to jump in the bands. They are leaving here to go to Trinidad, Jamaica and other Caribbean island carnivals,” he lamented. In fact, Layne said his numbers now comprised more overseas revellers than locals. (DN)

COW KEY BRIDGE REPAIRS SOON.....OH! THE AGGRAVATION
It’s coming. soon. The beginning of the repair work to the Cow Key Bridge. Anywhere from 220 to 480 days of pure unadulterated aggravation.
The Cow Key Bridge is part of US 1. The only way in and out of Key West. Sits just outside the Key West boundary line.
The bridge 4 lanes wide. Two lanes each way.
The Boulevards permit entry onto US 1 and then Cow Key Bridge. North and South Roosevelt Boulevards. Two lanes coming on and off US 1.
Seven to 9 in the morning and 4 to 6 in the evening the busiest times. People coming to work and going home make up most of the traffic.
I live on the golf course. Presently takes me 15 minutes to go less than 2 miles on US 1 to get into Key West. Traffic.
It has been projected it will take anywhere from 26 to 36 additional minutes during the bridge repair phase. From my perspective, conservative estimates.
The reason fr additional time is that the 4 bridge lanes will be reduced by at least 1 to 3 lanes.
Last night paints a clear picture as to the problem. No repair work yet. All lanes open and flowing. It was 6 and I was returning home. Coming to Flagler on South Roosevelt Boulevard. The right lane traffic for cars turning on to US 1 began at Flagler. Quite a distance. A 5-10 minute delay now. It will be more when 1 or 2 lanes are closed down.
Cow Key Bridge is not long. Three hounded feet. Work will begin in April. The State tells us 220 days if only one lane closed, 480 if 2.
A disaster in the making. High blood pressure. Not going to be a fun time.
People have already begun talking about what lies ahead. No one happy.
Locals are aware the State cannot be depended for accurate estimates, etc. It took forever a couple of years ago for North Roosevelt Boulevard to be repaired. And then certain parts were done wrong and had to be corrected. More aggravation after we thought it was all behind us.
I believe there has to be a better way so traffic can move faster. However, I am not bridge construction savvy and may be wrong.
You will hear more about the issue as April approaches.
Aqua Idol last night! My first visit in 10 years. Previously it was held on tuesday night. My blog talk radio evening. Could not attend. This season it has moved to wednesday.
A terrific show! Sixteen singers participating. All good. One contestant per week is eliminated. The contest lasts 16 weeks.
Aqua was packed. I got there early enough to get a seat at the bar. Viewers all locals. Residents and snowbirds. Most senior citizens. Everyone having a good time.
Lynda Frechette has to be complimented. She began this fundraiser 14 years ago for the Waterfront Playhouse. The success of the event is attributable to her.
Left before the show was over. I wanted to catch the second half of the Syracuse/Notre Dame game. Hurried to Jack Flats. Not one TV set was on the game. All showing other games with people already watching. No screen for Louis to watch Syracuse.
Walked across the street to La Trattoria for dinner.
Then home.
The game was over by the time I arrived home. Syracuse had won 84-82. Syracuse on a streak! Did poorly in pre-season play. The team has now won 4 consecutive games in ACC play.
Go “Cuse!
Recall Bruce Springsteen’s Pink Cadillac: Well now you may think I’m foolish / For the foolish things I do.
There’s a pink Cadillac cruising the Keys. Docked in Islamorada.
Its captain Joe Fox. He was taken with Captain Nemo from the movie “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”
He built from wood a vessel that ended up looking like a Cadillac. A pink one. He named it Nautilimo after Captain Nemo.
The Nautilimo is available for charter each day. A party vehicle. Carries six.
Former New York Yankee star Derek Jeter was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The first time he was eligible. His tally was one vote short of unanimous.
I mention Jeter because there was a time a few years ago when he was a frequent visitor to Key West.
The Curry name is legend in Key West.
William Curry died this day in 1896. He was born in the Bahamas. Came to Key West at the age of 16. Began a mercantile business.
He became Florida’s first millionaire.
Another distinguished Key West person of days gone by is Henry Flagler.
It was on this day in 1912 that the official opening of the Overseas Extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad took place. It is reported the crowd for the event was the largest ever up to that time in Key West.
Flagler was welcomed by then Mayor J. N. Fogarty.
The first train ever had arrived in Key West!
The Key West Citizen has been carrying diary excerpts of a May Johnson from many many years ago.
May was 19 at the time. A school teacher.
On the particular day reported it was fun and frolic for her. No school. She did many things around town. With boys and girls her age.
When May returned home, her mother was not happy. May wrote, “Mama put a damper on all of my good feelings by some of her foolishness.”
Even back then, parents and children had a hard tome getting along. The same considerations as today. Out all day with boys, not knowing where she was, etc.
S things never change.
Caught Trump early this morning on TV. He was still in Davos. He said he was not concerned with the impeachment trial since he had all the “documents.”
The U.S. Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade on January 22, 1973. Legalized abortion.
It has been a war ever since. Although Roe was decided 47 years ago, the battle to overturn the decision is ongoing.
Trump was at one time “very pro choice.” Politics has apparently changed his tune.
Decidedly an opportunist.
Pro-lifers have infrequently visited him in the White House.
Things have changed. The anti-abortion group March for Life holds its annual rally tomorrow. Trump is attending and participating. It will be the first time a sitting President has attended in 47 years.
The reason understandable. Pro-life is close to Trump’s evangelical base. He is making sure they know he wants their support. They should know by now. The 100 plus federal judges he has appointed who are pro-life speaks for itself.
During his press conference in Davos yesteryear, Trump announced he would seek cuts in Social Security and Medicare.
Interesting.
He’s a bit of a two face. In 2016, he said there would be no cuts in either. Three years latter, he has changed his mind. Probably thinks it will insure his victory.
In his announcement, Trump d said entitlements are “the easiest of all things to cut.”
The wrath of senior citizens will come down upon him! The elderly are a large voting block.
The impeachment trial so far is a sham. A trial without witnesses and documents. Will forever be known as a “Trump trial.”
A “Trump trial” does not offer justice.
Enjoy your day!

¹Onaji・hiru [同・晝].
This statement, indicating the time when the gathering was held, was actually noted in the kaiki later, just before the menu for the kaiseki. This suggests that Rikyū entered this gathering in the kaiki in a state of some confusion.
In fact, it appears that the original gathering (for which the tori-awase was assembled) was moved from midday to morning (probably due to Hideyoshi’s personal request, perhaps only received early the same morning: this would account for the relative simplicity of the food offered during the first chakai, as well as for why only a single variety of koicha was ready at that time*). Then, because he liked the tea†, he asked Rikyū to allow him to try the second kind as well; and since grinding additional matcha would take time (a fact of which Hideyoshi would have been completely aware, and which he would have accepted as fitting), he said would like to return later in the day and try the other variety that was packed in the Hashi-date cha-tsubo. This is the best explanation for why Rikyū hosted a second gathering for Hideyoshi in his other room (at which he served the more elaborate kaiseki that had been planned for this special kuchi-kiri no chakai).
Since five of Hideyoshi's courtiers were received for an atomi no chakai following the morning session‡, it would have been impossible for Rikyū to serve them tea (even just usucha) in the 4.5-mat room while also attending to Hideyoshi in the 2-mat room and shoin. (And if, for example, his son Dōan had served the courtiers, Rikyū typically would have made a notation to that effect in the kaiki.)
Therefore, the most likely scenario is that (as suggested previously) after the morning gathering Hideyoshi retired to his own residence (to rest while the second variety of koicha was being ground), while Rikyū received the courtiers in the 4.5 mat room (during which time Dōan would have seen to the grinding of the new kind of matcha) -- and then, after their departure, readied the 2-mat room and shoin for Hideyoshi's imminent return.
When word was received of Hideyoshi's departure for Rikyū's residence, Rikyū would have concluded whatever he was doing and stationed himself in the 2-mat room, to wait for his guest. And, after performing the sumi-temae, he would have invited Hideyoshi into the shoin for the meal (where he would have eaten the kaiseki, accompanied by Yakuin Zen-sō), after which they would have returned to the 2-mat room for koicha (followed by usucha served from the tea remaining in the natsume).
Thus, this entire second chakai would have commenced when Hideyoshi returned, probably around the middle of the day.
This material (which was combined with the previous chakai) was discussed in the post entitled Rikyū Chanoyu Sho, Book 6 (Part 4): Rikyū’s Hyaku-kai Ki, (1590) Ninth Month, 13th Day, Morning; the Kuchi-kiri Chakai. The URL for that post is:
http://chanoyu-to-wa.tumblr.com/post/167440639703/riky%C5%AB-chanoyu-sho-book-6-part-4-riky%C5%ABs
(Please note that this is the same URL quoted in the previous post -- because the two chakai were conflated into one in the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho.) ___________ *It was usually the case (and this practice dates back at least to the time of Ashikaga Yoshimasa -- though since the form where up to three kinds of tea were served during a single temae was learned from Nōami, this suggests that the idea traced its origins back to chanoyu on the continent) -- and this remains the custom even today -- that the host serves both kinds of koicha at the kuchi-kiri no chaji, so the question remains as to why Rikyū had prepared only one of the varieties for this gathering. The simplest explanation -- since tea was ground in the early morning -- is that Hideyoshi suddenly moved the time of the chakai forward, from midday to the time of the mid-morning meal. (As mentioned above, this would also account for the rather homely kaiseki that Rikyū served during that gathering).
This also would account for the recess (during which Rikyū hosted the atomi for Hideyoshi’s courtiers, while his son oversaw the grinding of the second variety of tea in the mizuya).
Nevertheless, by serving the two kinds of tea at different chakai, Rikyū could insure that cross-contamination of the second koicha by traces of the first would not occur. And by waiting to grind the second variety of tea until after the first chakai was concluded, Rikyū could also be sure that the tea served at the midday gathering would be exactly as fresh as the first had been in its time, thus allowing a close comparison between the two.
†Cha-tsubo were generally filled with three kinds of tea: Hatsu-no-mukashi koicha [初の昔濃茶] and the corresponding Ato-no-mukashi koicha [後の昔濃茶] (from the same garden or gardens), the paper packets of which were surrounded by inferior-quality leaves (used as packing material, to prevent any dampness seeping into the jar from damaging the high-quality leaves) that could be used for usucha. The Hatsu-no-mukashi and Ato-no-mukashi leaves would have been of exactly the same quality. Thus Hideyoshi, enjoying the first, had probably said that he would like to taste the second, which resulted in the rather impromptu second gathering.
‡The intention would, in part, have been to use up the rest of the freshly ground matcha remaining from the first gathering, before it began to loose its flavor.
Whether Rikyū served both koicha and usucha, or only usucha, would have depended on the amount of tea that remained.
²Ue-sama [上樣].
Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
³Yaku-in [藥院].
In the majority of the manuscripts*, Hideyoshi appears to have attended this chakai alone. However, the Hisada family's version (which copy seems to have been made shortly after Rikyū's death) indicates that Yakuin Zen-sō also accompanied Hideyoshi to this second chakai -- which would have been appropriate (according to the customs of the day, where important persons were never left unattended†). __________ *Which seem to be either second-generation copies, or copies made at the beginning of the Edo period (after Rikyū's original had begun to deteriorate).
†It was not always necessary to mention this fact, and the attendants (if not important individuals in their own right) were often not named in the kaiki -- though this does not mean that they were not present.
Especially when a meal was served, during which the host would be out of the room for potentially extended periods of time, it would have been extremely rude to leave an important guest sitting alone -- if only because he would have nobody to talk to (and nobody to help him if he suddenly needed something -- it being very bad manners to raise ones voice to call out to people in the next room for assistance).
Hideyoshi would have been seated on the 2-mat jō-dan [上段], while Zensō would have taken a seat at the foot of the jō-dan immediately below, perhaps in front of the dashi-fu-zukue [出し文机] (this would allow him to help serve Hideyoshi, by pouring the hot water for him and helping him in other ways, when Rikyū was absent).
⁴Nijō shiki [二疊敷].
The guests entered this room at the beginning of the sho-za, for the sumi-temae.
When Rikyū was done, he would have invited the guests to move into the shoin (by passing through the katte-guchi -- the host's entrance --, the 6-mat katte, and the 8-mat tsugi-no-ma).
⁵Unryū-gama [雲龍釜].
The details of the arrangement and use of the small unryū-gama in the ro are covered in footnote 17 in the post mentioned under footnote 1 (Rikyū Chanoyu Sho, Book 6 (Part 4): Rikyū’s Hyaku-kai Ki, (1590) Ninth Month, 13th Day, Morning; the Kuchi-kiri Chakai). The URL for which is:
http://chanoyu-to-wa.tumblr.com/post/167440639703/riky%C5%AB-chanoyu-sho-book-6-part-4-riky%C5%ABs
The kama was suspended over the ro on a bamboo ji-zai, using Rikyū‘s bronze kan [鐶] and tsuru [弦], which are shown above.
⁶Wake-mono mizusashi [はけ物水さし].
While the name was transcribed with the hiragana “ha” [は] (for the sound “wa”), specimens from the Hisada manuscript show that the word was actually written “〇け物水さし,” at least in that (early version of the) kaiki.
⁷Tsutsui no ido chawan [つついのいど茶碗].
This is the same chawan that is now known as the Tsutsu-i-zutsu [筒井筒]*. At the time of this chakai, the chawan had not yet been damaged (which was the provocation for the change in name).
The earlier name† refers to the daimyō‡ from whom Hideyoshi received this chawan. __________ *The modified name derives from a kyōka [狂歌] (a comic verse) by Hosokawa Yūsai [細川幽斎, 1534 ~ 1610], who was present when the bowl was broken, who recited it in an effort to defuse Hideyoshi's anger over the damage to his chawan: tsutsu-i-zutsu izutsu ni wareshi ido-chawan, toga wo baware ni oi shike rashi na [筒井筒五つにわれし井戶茶碗とがをばわれに負ひしけらしな]: “the ‘Tsutsu-i-zutsu,’ an ido-chawan that has been broken into five pieces -- yet if I take the blame for [breaking] it on myself, doesn’t that mean that I’ll be the one who gets kicked?”
Though many modern commentators state that Yūsai's poem was derived from a verse in the Ise Monogarari [伊勢物語], in point of fact it was based on a more recent effort (by Fujiwara no Suetsune [藤原季経, 1131 ~ 1221], recited during the famous Roppyaku-ban Uta-awase [六百番歌合], “the Poetry Competition in Six Hundred Innings,” which was held around the year 1193): tsutsu-i-zutsu i-zutsu ni kakeshi-take yori mo sugi-nu ya kayō kokoro fukasa ha [筒井筒井筒にかけしたけよりも過ぎぬや通ふ心深さは]: “the enclosure around the well-curb: because of the banister one can not pass [to throw himself into the well]; [so] I am left to wander back and forth, lost in dark thoughts."
It was Suetsune's poem that can be better said to be related to the poem (ascribed to Ariwara no Narihira) found in episode 23 of the Ise Monogatari: tsutsu-i-tsuno i-zutsu ni kakeshi maro ga take sugi ni kerashi mo imo mi-zaruma ni [つゝゐつのゐづゝにかけしまろがたけすぎにけらしもいもみざるまに], which Helen C. McCullogh has rendered as “since I last saw you, it seems to have grown until I am the taller - my height, that we two measured against the curb of the well” in her 1963 translation of the Ise Monogatari.
†This chawan had originally belonged to Shukō. However, after several changes in ownership, it came into the possession of the samurai Tsutsui Junshō [筒井順昭, 1523 ~ 1550], a contemporary (and student of) Jōō.
‡Toyotomi Hideyoshi received this chawan from Junsho's son Tsutsui Junkei [筒井順慶, 1549 ~ 1584], who presented the bowl to Toyotomi Hideyoshi together with an apology for originally having sided with Akechi Mitsuhide.
⁸Chaire ・ ko-natsume [茶入・小ナツメ].
This container held matcha that had been ground between the end of the first gathering and this (meaning that the amount of tea was limited). A ko-natsume was used because this would allow the tea to fill it completely (leaving no more empty space than necessary, so the flavoring elements would not volatilize and escape, thus keeping the tea as fresh as possible).
Though this is purely conjecture, since cha-tsubo were traditionally filled two kinds of koicha (hatsu no mukashi [初の昔], the tea picked during the first ten days of the harvest season; and ato no mukashi [後の昔], the tea picked during the last ten days of the season -- both teas being of the same grade), perhaps Rikyū served hatsu no mukashi during the morning gathering, and ato no mukashi during this present chakai. Since this seems to have been the first opportunity to taste the new tea, perhaps Rikyū and Hideyoshi did things this way so that both kinds of tea could be appreciated to their fullest, without any chance of the first contaminating the second.
⁹Ori-tame [をりため].
In addition, Rikyū would have used a take-wa [竹輪] as the futaoki, and a mentsū [面桶] as the mizu-koboshi.
These two were the things almost always used for these purposes in the small room, hence there was no reason for Rikyū to specify them in the kaiki.
¹⁰Onaji ・ hiru [同・晝].
As mentioned above (under footnote 1), this actually defines the time for the entire chakai, not just the kaiseki.
¹¹Hiroma ni te [同・晝 廣間にて].
The important point is that the meal was served in the hiroma (i.e., Rikyū's 18-mat Colored Shoin, with its 2-mat jō-dan), rather than in the 6-mat katte, as was usually done when entertaining more ordinary guests in his 2-mat room.
¹²Kushi-awabi [くしあはび].
Skewer-dried abalone that has been rehydrated by boiling it in broth. The flesh is sliced into bite-sized pieces before being served.
¹³O-yu-tsuke [御湯つけ].
This means adding hot water to rice, to make a sort of gruel.
The hot water was replaced with steeped tea in the Edo period, leading to what we now know as o-cha-tsuke today.
¹⁴Oke ni [桶に].
Perhaps a shallow metal nabe with a handle and a spout, in which soup was sometimes served.
It was brought out on a long tray, and would have been accompanied by a bowl of pickled vegetables (see footnote 17, below).
The miso-shiru was served in this container, along with a shallow ladle with which the yaki-tōfu and daikon was served
¹⁵Kane ni tamu [金にたむ].
This is an interlineal comment, referring to (and apparently describing) the nabe. According to the editors of the Sadō Ko-ten Zen-shu [茶道古典全集], this means that the nabe was decorated with gold foil (kinpaku [金箔]) -- perhaps gilded all-over, so that it resembled a serving pot made of gold.
¹⁶Yaki-miso [やきみそ].
This is miso-shiru containing a large piece of scorched momen-tōfu [木綿豆腐] and finely chopped daikon.
¹⁷Kō-no-mono [かうの物].
Vegetables pickled in brine for several days. The pickling gives them a crunch, which seems to have been much appreciated in Rikyū’s day.
¹⁸Mizu-ae [水あへ].
According to the commentary published in the Sadō Ko-ten Zenshu [茶道古典全集], mizu-ae [水和え] refers to a dish made of various kinds of dried foods (the commentary includes a list of various kinds of small fish, eel, squid, melons, mushrooms, and so forth -- though without any certainty of which of these Rikyū may have used for the mizu-ae dish served on this occasion) soaked in water, and then sliced and dressed with a mixture of iri-zake* and rice-vinegar. __________ *Iri-zake [煎り酒] is (old) sake that has been boiled down with kelp, katsuo-bushi, and ume-boshi (pickled "plums" -- the fruit of the early-spring-flowering ume).
Iri-zake was a popular condiment in Rikyū's day (in addition to being used to flavor various dishes, it was also used as a dipping sauce), and allowed the host to make a use of sake that was no longer fit to be served as a beverage.
¹⁹Atsume-shiru [あつめ汁].
This means a soup made by boiling the various other things that had been served during the meal together in a clear broth (including the things used when making the mizu-ae, and the miso-shiru).
²⁰Senbei [せんべい].
Senbei [煎餅] are Japanese rice "crackers," originally inspired by the burned rice that forms on the bottom of the rice pot as it is cooking.
²¹Usukawa [うすかは].
Usukawa [薄皮] are a kind of manjū [饅頭] (a steamed kashi) with a very thin wheat-flour skin, filled with bean-paste. This was probably procured from a specialty shop.
²²Koneri-gaki [こねりがき].
Koneri-kake [木練柿] are persimmons that has ripened on the tree. They become extremely sweet and soft after the first frosts (though they are spoiled by the heavy frosts that follow), and it is only at this time of year that they are available.
²³Kan [かん].
The Sadō Ko-ten Zenshu [茶道古典全集] states that this word refers to atsumono [羹], which is a hot soup (made by boiling pieces of fish or fowl -- such as previously roasted ko-tori [小鳥]* -- in broth, along with a selection of seasonal vegetables).
It seems this was included with the kashi (this dish is not mentioned in the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho account of this chakai) to allow the guests to eat more, if they still felt hungry after the rather minimal food offerings that made up the kaiseki†. __________ *Ko-tori [小鳥] is a general word for the various small sparrows and finches commonly taken by hawks. After removing the feathers and innards, these birds were roasted whole on a spit over a fire. The roasted birds, in this case, would have been cut into pieces, which were then added to the soup.
†As has been remarked upon before in this blog, during Rikyū's period people generally ate only two times each day -- in mid-morning, and in the evening.
At the earlier gathering, Rikyū served Hideyoshi and the other guests a rather normal breakfast, which theoretically should have kept them sated until evening. This being the case, and not knowing if Hideyoshi would have wanted to eat more, he seems to have taken this way of offering more food -- which could be accepted or rejected, as the guests saw fit.
²⁴Fu [ふ].
Fu [麩] is wheat gluten.
Perhaps this refers to pieces or strips of fu that were boiled in broth. They were usually tied in a flat knot (to make them easier to eat) before being served.
Fu could also be formed into balls that were deep-fried in oil.
It is unclear how the fu was prepared on this occasion.
